- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we're going to talk about a quote from one of my
- 0:34most favorite artists of all times, Georgia O'Keeffe.
- 0:38And I posted this quote the other day and I got a message
- 0:41from somebody about it. So I want to tackle this because
- 0:44somebody commented on it. So the quote goes, I've been
- 0:49absolutely terrified every minute of my life and I never
- 0:53let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.
- 0:57So this person comments on it and she says that can't be true.
- 1:03And I started laughing. And I said, why do you say that?
- 1:06And she said, well, because I mean, a fear keeps you from
- 1:10doing things. And I said, ah, interesting
- 1:12concept. Fear is present to make us think
- 1:17before we do things. But does it keep you from doing
- 1:19things? And she said, well, it certainly
- 1:21keeps me from doing things. And it got me thinking, OK, yes.
- 1:26Do I believe that Georgia O'Keeffe said that she's never
- 1:29let it keep her from doing a single thing?
- 1:31Well, I do believe that that's what she believes 100%.
- 1:36Now because we're in our head and we are always skewed in our
- 1:41own head, who the hell knows and really cares?
- 1:44The quote is awesome. The quote makes a point and the
- 1:46quote makes you think about are you living in a state of fear
- 1:50from and is it preventing you from doing something?
- 1:52Like if she was afraid to actually put the paint on the
- 1:55paper or on the canvas, would she ever have painted the
- 1:58picture she had painted? No, she wouldn't have.
- 2:01You know, many years ago I took this class watercolor class.
- 2:06I had never painted watercolors before always wanted to learn
- 2:10how to I painted them as a child but they were you know nothing
- 2:13of substance and I wanted to try doing it as an adult.
- 2:16So we signed up for a week long class learning Chinese
- 2:22watercolor painting from a gentleman from China who was
- 2:25coming through the US on a tour, Leon Kwan Zhen.
- 2:28And we signed up with him and went to New Hampshire and hung
- 2:32out for a week learning how to paint these watercolors.
- 2:35And I just thought this was the coolest thing ever because if
- 2:38you're going to learn something, you go and learn from somebody
- 2:40who's brilliant at it. And if they're willing to teach
- 2:42someone who knows nothing, which I asked, I said, can I come if I
- 2:45know nothing? And they were like, absolutely.
- 2:48So we get there. Now, the other people that had
- 2:50signed up for the class knew everything because they had been
- 2:53all been painting watercolor for the longest time.
- 2:56And I was like, going in, I was super excited.
- 3:00I was so excited to go do this. I was a little afraid I was
- 3:04going to suck at it, but I'm going to do it anyway.
- 3:06I was having a Georgia O'Keeffe moment.
- 3:07I'm going to do it anyway. And that really is how I spend
- 3:10most of my time. Like, I'll figure it out.
- 3:12I'll build the plane while I fly it.
- 3:14I'm pretty common for saying that.
- 3:16Every one of my clients has heard me say, well, we'll build
- 3:19this plane while we fly it, and we probably don't have the right
- 3:21tools, but we'll figure it out as we go.
- 3:23So I'm. I'm always the one that's using
- 3:25my imagination, creativity and all of that to go into it.
- 3:28But now back to the story of the class.
- 3:30So I get into this class and my husband Mark and I are doing
- 3:35this together. And he's one of the only men in
- 3:38the class, by the way, which is kudos to him for coming with me
- 3:41and doing this. And where with all these women
- 3:45that have been painting forever. They have been painting forever.
- 3:48And he comes by and he's asking every person where they come
- 3:52from, what they do, how long they've been painting.
- 3:55And I say, well, I haven't done this before.
- 3:57You know, Mark regularly paints acrylics, but I haven't even
- 4:02been doing that. I photographer, I use, you know,
- 4:05my cameras for everything. And I'm telling them this.
- 4:08And he puts his hand on my shoulder and he says she'll be
- 4:11the best one in this class. And I was mortified.
- 4:15I was mortified. Like, why would he say something
- 4:17like that one, The pressure that that put on me.
- 4:19But the women in the class were all now upset because why is it
- 4:24that he's saying this? And I felt so uncomfortable.
- 4:27And then he stopped and he paused.
- 4:28And he said because she knows nothing, she'll be willing to
- 4:33hear and learn the way I will teach it, because you know
- 4:36things. You will have a barrier to it.
- 4:39And then everybody got it. So the point is, I wasn't afraid
- 4:45to go into that class. I was doing it.
- 4:48Then I got afraid. I was in the class.
- 4:50Then he said something. I was afraid.
- 4:52Then I had to let go of my fear and continue on in the class.
- 4:56And I had to see that these women who couldn't let go of the
- 4:59way they were doing it were in fear that they were not going to
- 5:01be good. And it was this big microcosm.
- 5:04It was a Petri dish of what was going on psychologically.
- 5:08And I'm telling you this story because it's so important to
- 5:10realize fear comes and goes. Fear is not an absolute.
- 5:14It's not like you have it one moment and it's gone.
- 5:16That whole week was mixed. Such a bath of mixed emotions
- 5:20for me, but it really taught me a lot about saying hey, I'm
- 5:23going to dive in, I'm going to let it go.
- 5:25I'm not going to let this happen to me.
- 5:27And I had to keep course of correcting and adjusting my my
- 5:30thoughts. But guess what?
- 5:31It worked. And I and I love to this day, I
- 5:34love experimenting and doing all kinds of stuff like that.
- 5:38And yes, I still paint watercolors.
- 5:40Not nearly as much as I used to after that class.
- 5:43But the point is, don't let that fear take you on.
- 5:46And don't let the concept of thinking, hey, I've got to just
- 5:50get Once I get rid of it, it can never come back.
- 5:52Because that's crap. It'll come back right away.
- 5:54All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:58will see you tomorrow. Bye.
