- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I was just like I have wasted so
- 0:03Speaker 1: many years doing that when I could have been doing this.
- 0:07Speaker 1: But being a truck driver, you can't do it from
- 0:10Speaker 1: a young age. It's not like a job that you
- 0:11Speaker 1: can take straight out of school. You can't, like very
- 0:15Speaker 1: rarely will you be able to find an employer that
- 0:16Speaker 1: will employ you from like 18 to 25. Normally under
- 0:23Speaker 1: 25 the premiums are too high for insurance so they
- 0:24Speaker 1: just won't do it. So I just didn't think it
- 0:27Speaker 1: was an option for me. However, a few years before that,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I had gone and got my truck license off my
- 0:33Speaker 1: own back. So I was working in the office and
- 0:35Speaker 1: then I'd go and do my lessons and.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Then I would, yeah, do my lessons.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And then I got my truck license, which is just
- 0:41Speaker 1: a rigid, so no detachable trailers, just like the truck itself.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And so I sat on that for a couple of years.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But the first time I got behind the wheel and drove,
- 0:51Speaker 1: I was terrified because like, They're so big and you're
- 0:57Speaker 1: driving in the city and like you've got all these
- 0:59Speaker 1: cars and you're like the whole width. So a truck
- 1:03Speaker 1: is like 2.5 metres wide.
- 1:04Speaker 2: The lane is three metres wide.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So you've only got like half a metre each side
- 1:10Speaker 1: or like, you know, to try and I was just like, oh,
- 1:13Speaker 1: my God, like I've driven cars since I was 16.
- 1:16Speaker 1: How did I not realise how limited the vision is
- 1:19Speaker 1: for a truck, you know, or people just brake in
- 1:21Speaker 1: front of you and you can't stop because you've got
- 1:23Speaker 1: a live load on the back.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So that kind of really opened my.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Eyes to, like, I thought I wanted this, but this
- 1:31Speaker 1: is really scary. But when you do scary things and
- 1:34Speaker 1: you push yourself, like that feeling is really like you
- 1:37Speaker 1: feel like you've achieved something.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 2: So that, it was scary.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah. Do you still get scared or is it better now?
- 1:47Speaker 1: I get scared if I've had like a few weeks
- 1:49Speaker 1: not driving and the thought of like, oh. Like I'm
- 1:53Speaker 1: about to hook up four trailers and drive to Darwin.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So that's like one of the biggest road train combinations
- 2:00Speaker 1: and I haven't done that leg. So like there's an
- 2:03Speaker 1: element of like, oh, shit, but then as soon as
- 2:05Speaker 1: I sit in the truck and I drive it out,
- 2:06Speaker 1: all those fears have disappeared. I don't feel scared whenever
- 2:09Speaker 1: I'm driving. It's more so maybe like the thought of
- 2:12Speaker 1: an upcoming trip or how am I going to get
- 2:15Speaker 1: around or how am I going to go on that.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But as soon as I'm in a truck, I'm just
- 2:19Speaker 1: like my nervous system is so relaxed and so at peace.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Well, I've wondered because how does it work for really
- 2:26Speaker 3: big trucks? Because I mean, you're right. Your vision is
- 2:29Speaker 3: limited and eventually you have to take the lane. Like
- 2:32Speaker 3: I'm thinking of a lane change, right? And like eventually
- 2:34Speaker 3: you've got to go to the lane. Do you ever, I've,
- 2:38Speaker 3: I've seen some truck drivers with like the big loads.
- 2:43Speaker 3: They just, they, they turn their turn signal on for
- 2:46Speaker 3: about a minute and then they just start moving over.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And You have to.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I was going to say, like, is there any other option? Like,
- 2:53Speaker 3: I don't know if they're, like, is there just.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Because people, you know, like, you can get really angry
- 2:59Speaker 1: as a truck driver and that's why they probably are.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And it's not because they're just shit people. It's because
- 3:03Speaker 1: they've just seen so much crap throughout the day. So
- 3:07Speaker 1: by the time something bad might have happened, there's been
- 3:09Speaker 1: a hundred things before that of just, like, just really.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I like to think of it as people aren't arseholes.
- 3:18Speaker 2: They are just uneducated.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So like when they do silly things, I'm like, oh,
- 3:24Speaker 1: it's just because they don't know any better. And that's
- 3:27Speaker 1: probably like that's just very optimistic point of view. Normally
- 3:30Speaker 1: they just don't care. But I try to tell myself, oh,
- 3:32Speaker 1: maybe they don't realize. But say you've got your indicator on.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Cars sometimes will just keep going. No one will make
- 3:40Speaker 1: a break for you. And you have to go because
- 3:42Speaker 1: you have to get out. So you have to just
- 3:44Speaker 1: push your way through and be like, well, I'm coming now.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I've tried to be polite. I've just got to start coming.
- 3:49Speaker 1: There are elements of we've got blind spots. So if
- 3:52Speaker 1: you've got over in America, you've got really long bonneted trucks,
- 3:56Speaker 1: so really long bonnet at the front. There are significant
- 4:00Speaker 1: blind spots within that and people are like, well, they're
- 4:03Speaker 1: too dangerous, get them off the road.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I'm like, no, but you just need to be aware
- 4:06Speaker 2: and you'll be fine. Like there's a reason. That's a
- 4:09Speaker 2: big engine at the front.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And if cars just like sit in that bonnet corner,
- 4:19Speaker 2: let me bring an example.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So here's a truck and say we're driving along. If
- 4:24Speaker 1: a car is sitting just right here, we can't see
- 4:27Speaker 1: it over the bonnet, right? So if you're undertaking a
- 4:31Speaker 1: truck or whatever, just make sure you just get ahead.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And a rule is if you can see the driver,
- 4:37Speaker 2: we can see you.
- 4:38Speaker 1: If you can see me through my mirrors, I can
- 4:39Speaker 1: see you. But as soon as you're in front of
- 4:41Speaker 1: that little mirror in this little area.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Here, we can't see you.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Right?
- 4:45Speaker 1: And same thing, like if you're right, like say there's
- 4:48Speaker 1: a gap in the traffic like this at a traffic
- 4:51Speaker 1: light and a car just sneaks in here because they're like, well,
- 4:54Speaker 1: there's a gap.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Well, we haven't seen you come in this tiny little area.
- 4:58Speaker 1: We've left a gap see this car here soon as
- 5:01Speaker 1: the lights go green we've got 18 gears to try
- 5:03Speaker 1: and start working through so we're going to start trying
- 5:05Speaker 1: to get the momentum so that we can get through
- 5:07Speaker 1: the lights before it goes red so we start moving
- 5:10Speaker 1: forward just trying to like we've got that gap we
- 5:12Speaker 1: know it's there crunch we've taken out a car because
- 5:15Speaker 1: it's in that tiny little gap that we didn't know
- 5:17Speaker 1: existed like that we didn't know that the car was
- 5:19Speaker 1: there so there are little things like that where it
- 5:23Speaker 1: that I love my Instagram because I can create that
- 5:26Speaker 1: awareness for people a little bit as well.
- 5:29Speaker 2: But yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah. And I was going to like, do you get,
- 5:33Speaker 3: does your heart drop when you make, when you're starting
- 5:36Speaker 3: to go over just because you are like, I've done
- 5:39Speaker 3: my best. Now I got to go.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Yeah, like typically depending on where you are in Australia,
- 5:44Speaker 1: people are pretty good, to be honest, and I try.
- 5:46Speaker 2: To avoid the cities.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I don't. Yeah, I don't like driving in cities at all.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I like driving within the middle of Australia. So like
- 5:56Speaker 1: Australian cities are kind of like all along the coastline.
- 6:00Speaker 1: So as soon as you're like a couple of hours
- 6:01Speaker 1: inland from any of the major cities, we're good.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I like that a lot more.
- 6:07Speaker 1: But say there's a moment where you have to jam
- 6:10Speaker 1: on your brakes and you're just like... you know like
- 6:12Speaker 1: that because you're like are we going to stop in
- 6:14Speaker 1: time you know and it because no driver wants to
- 6:17Speaker 1: get in an accident we're all human beings who want
- 6:18Speaker 1: to get home at the end of the day as
- 6:20Speaker 1: well like we're not out there trying to be dangerous
- 6:23Speaker 1: um and people put themselves in dangerous situations around us
- 6:26Speaker 1: all the time you got to think like one car
- 6:29Speaker 1: typically is around one ton um and a truck can
- 6:33Speaker 1: be anywhere up to 300 ton in some of the
- 6:37Speaker 1: trucks i've driven right so That's like say a B-double
- 6:40Speaker 1: in Australia, typical one you kind of see like on
- 6:43Speaker 1: the coastline. That's two trailers and you're around 60, 65 ton,
- 6:48Speaker 1: so 60 cars. So trying to pull up, yes, we've
- 6:51Speaker 1: got a lot of brakes, but still pulling up 60
- 6:54Speaker 1: cars worth in the distance that a car can just
- 6:57Speaker 1: do one.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So, you know, they're.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Things to consider, but without trucks, Australia stops, America stops,
- 7:03Speaker 1: you know, it's an essential part of the.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Landscape.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:08Speaker 3: For a trucker, and maybe just specifically for you, is
- 7:14Speaker 3: the truck home? When you said people like to get home,
- 7:18Speaker 3: does a trucker feel like there is a home? I
- 7:21Speaker 3: wonder if there's people there, but I'm also wondering, is
- 7:24Speaker 3: the truck mostly home? Because if you spend so much
- 7:26Speaker 3: time in it,
