- 2:24Speaker 2: of Stafford Mayor a good one, Matt Sutton about that
- 2:26Speaker 2: coming up later on. Also, Ashley offered Glance for the
- 2:29Speaker 2: Putnam County Chamber of Commerce is here. They had their
- 2:31Speaker 2: annual golf tournament coming up next week. Also going to
- 2:34Speaker 2: talk to her about some other events going on to
- 2:36Speaker 2: Putnam County and the continued growth in the county as well.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The West Virginia baseball team set to face off against
- 2:42Speaker 2: Troy again the College World Series in Omaha. That game
- 2:46Speaker 2: set for just after two o'clock or so this afternoon.
- 2:49Speaker 2: We'll get into that a little bit later on, and
- 2:51Speaker 2: your calls and text are welcome to I want to
- 2:53Speaker 2: welcome to the show now. West Virginia Attorney General J. B. Mccusky,
- 2:56Speaker 2: good morning, sir, Welcome to the show.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Good morning Dave.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Today, I am doing fine. Go Mountaineers.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Yeah, let's go Mountaineers. You know, this is the way
- 3:06Speaker 5: Unfortunately it goes for WVU, but I feel really good
- 3:09Speaker 5: about them winning three in a row. This is a
- 3:12Speaker 5: resilient team with a lot of senior leadership and an
- 3:15Speaker 5: amazing coach. You know, we've got to do it the
- 3:18Speaker 5: hard way, but we will.
- 3:19Speaker 2: As a WVU guy that I know you are, I mean,
- 3:22Speaker 2: this has been a great, great couple of weeks, this
- 3:25Speaker 2: Mountaineer run, doing something new other Mountaineer team has ever done,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and really jab capturing the imagination, the intention of America
- 3:35Speaker 2: of this team. And I mean that that's not hyperbolics,
- 3:38Speaker 2: that's true. This is what everybody's talking about.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know it's funny is that everybody forgets
- 3:43Speaker 5: about WVU and we are a sleeping giant. And when
- 3:46Speaker 5: WVU is good at sports, it's good for college sports
- 3:49Speaker 5: period because we have the best fan base in the country.
- 3:52Speaker 5: And you know, we're fun. We're fun at everything we do.
- 3:56Speaker 5: And when our basketball teams are good, we play a
- 3:58Speaker 5: fun brand of basketball. When our football teams are good,
- 4:00Speaker 5: we play a fun brand of football, and our baseball
- 4:03Speaker 5: team and our soccer team are both you know, first
- 4:06Speaker 5: class now, and so you know, in this new world
- 4:09Speaker 5: of college athletics, WVU is an absolute sleeping giant. And
- 4:13Speaker 5: you cannot understate the incredible job that Ren Baker has
- 4:17Speaker 5: done in building our athletic department in what is the
- 4:20Speaker 5: most difficult and confusing time in the history of college sports.
- 4:25Speaker 5: You know, without him, this could have gone the other way.
- 4:28Speaker 5: But when you look at where we are, I think
- 4:30Speaker 5: we are primed to be, you know, a leader in
- 4:32Speaker 5: college sports going forward, and that's huge for West Virginia
- 4:35Speaker 5: and it's really great for all of our student athletes.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Talking again with Attorney General JB. Mccusky, I want to
- 4:40Speaker 2: talk about a release which came from your office earlier
- 4:44Speaker 2: this month. I found it very interesting, and it has
- 4:46Speaker 2: to do with, in your words, the ability to sue
- 4:49Speaker 2: and to stop any federal permitting project before state agencies
- 4:54Speaker 2: that are involved in US have a chance to review it.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Explain that.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Yeah, And just before I get into that real quick,
- 5:01Speaker 5: I think there's one other ncublea thing that bears mentioning.
- 5:04Speaker 5: So yesterday a coalition of Attorney generals along with the
- 5:09Speaker 5: Big Twelve fought back against Texas Tech having Brandon Soresby
- 5:15Speaker 5: on their football team. And to anybody out there who
- 5:17Speaker 5: doesn't know what's going on, Brandon Swersby was a quarterback
- 5:20Speaker 5: at the University of Cincinnati last year and he got
- 5:23Speaker 5: caught gambling not just on sports, but on games he
- 5:26Speaker 5: was playing in and Texas Tech stupidly went ahead and
- 5:31Speaker 5: signed him to an NIL deal after he was banned
- 5:33Speaker 5: from the NCUBLEA, etc. He got a fake injunction essentially
- 5:37Speaker 5: from a Homer judge in Texas, but he has resigned
- 5:41Speaker 5: from the Texas Tech football team amid pressure from a
- 5:44Speaker 5: myriad of Republican attorney generals. Myself included in the Big Twelve.
- 5:48Speaker 5: And this is a really good day for the nc
- 5:50Speaker 5: DOUBLEA because we are saying to these billionaire boosters, you
- 5:53Speaker 5: can't do whatever you want. You can't put people on
- 5:56Speaker 5: your team.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Who bet on sports.
- 5:58Speaker 5: And so I think that is it's a very big
- 6:00Speaker 5: day and it's something that I worked with Ren and
- 6:03Speaker 5: the Athletic department there about. So now back to this
- 6:06Speaker 5: other thing. So the idea here, we have a national
- 6:10Speaker 5: energy policy, and what the Left is doing is these
- 6:15Speaker 5: people that have this irrational view of how our energy
- 6:18Speaker 5: should be created. They believe that we should shut down
- 6:21Speaker 5: every single carbon based fuel source in America today, and
- 6:25Speaker 5: they believe that somehow or another, we're going to be
- 6:27Speaker 5: able to generate enough electricity not only to meet our
- 6:29Speaker 5: base loads now using windmills and solar panels, which is impossible,
- 6:33Speaker 5: but also to meet the demand that is coming. More
- 6:37Speaker 5: than three times more electricity needs to be created in
- 6:39Speaker 5: this country over the next ten years than it's being
- 6:41Speaker 5: created now to meet our data center needs, et cetera.
- 6:44Speaker 5: And so what they do is they shut down the
- 6:49Speaker 5: projects at the very beginning phases. After right there has
- 6:55Speaker 5: been zero federal oversight. And so the idea is is
- 6:59Speaker 5: that we want to make sure that FERK and our
- 7:01Speaker 5: federal agencies who are charged with ensuring that we have
- 7:04Speaker 5: rational energy policy that enables people to power their homes,
- 7:08Speaker 5: to cool their homes, et cetera, are able to institute
- 7:11Speaker 5: that policy beyond the grasp of these lunatic left wing
- 7:16Speaker 5: greeno groups that are seeking to destroy basically American exceptionalism.
- 7:22Speaker 5: And it's an important step and it's something that we're
- 7:25Speaker 5: really really invested in making sure happens. Because a strong
- 7:29Speaker 5: energy environment in America means West Virginia jobs, It means
- 7:35Speaker 5: our economy continues to do the things that we know
- 7:37Speaker 5: it can, because we are in a very prime position
- 7:40Speaker 5: right now to really change the outlook for our state
- 7:45Speaker 5: forever in this new world of data centers and power demand.
- 7:49Speaker 2: And you've been kind of the lead on this, but
- 7:52Speaker 2: there what I think a little over twenty other states
- 7:54Speaker 2: involved in this, right Yeah, So.
- 7:56Speaker 5: When West Virginia speaks on energy issues, the leading state
- 8:00Speaker 5: follow with us. And that is something that we are
- 8:03Speaker 5: enormously proud of in our office. Our solicitors team of
- 8:05Speaker 5: Caleb and Michael and Holly are the best in the
- 8:08Speaker 5: country and they are recognized that way by the leading
- 8:12Speaker 5: lawyers in the space. And you know, when we speak
- 8:15Speaker 5: and when we write, the courts listen to us, and
- 8:18Speaker 5: so do my fellow Attorney generals who who are in
- 8:22Speaker 5: this fight with me.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Well to get I want to talk a little bit
- 8:24Speaker 2: about the Save Women's Sports Act, Attorney General, A decision
- 8:28Speaker 2: is expected I think soon in this West Virginia versus BPJ.
- 8:33Speaker 2: That's Bey Becky Pepper Jackson case. This was the young
- 8:36Speaker 2: person who has competed in won track and field events
- 8:40Speaker 2: what's the latest there.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Yeah, so we are waiting for the Supreme Court decision.
- 8:44Speaker 5: As we know, BPJ competed in the state track meet
- 8:49Speaker 5: and was the state champion in the shot put and
- 8:52Speaker 5: finished third in the discus, And so this is meaningful
- 8:57Speaker 5: and we believe that this case will be decided on Thursday.
- 9:01Speaker 5: We will be getting a decision once and for all
- 9:04Speaker 5: from the United States Supreme Court as to whether or
- 9:06Speaker 5: not it is permissible for West Virginia to delineate its
- 9:10Speaker 5: sports teams at a high school and middle school level
- 9:13Speaker 5: based on sex as opposed to gender. And we are very,
- 9:17Speaker 5: very bullish about our chances of winning, and we're looking
- 9:20Speaker 5: forward to having won this fight and making sure that
- 9:23Speaker 5: every woman and girl in West Virginia has a safe
- 9:26Speaker 5: and fair place to compete and showcase their talents.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And again, I think you said a decision is expected
- 9:31Speaker 2: on this on Thursday, and this is one that the
- 9:33Speaker 2: entire really the entire nation is watching to see how.
- 9:35Speaker 3: This goes forward.
- 9:36Speaker 5: A big deal, Yes, sir, all.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Right, I want to let you go because I know
- 9:40Speaker 2: you've got some other things going on, but I do
- 9:41Speaker 2: want to ask you you and your family going to
- 9:43Speaker 2: get taken any of the bike events in Charleston.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Actually no, my kids are at camp, so it is
- 9:48Speaker 5: just my wife and me, which is I missed my children,
- 9:52Speaker 5: but it is nice to have a little break. But
- 9:54Speaker 5: we're actually up at the auto Dealers convention. So I'm
- 9:56Speaker 5: here with our great friends from Moses and from Joe
- 9:59Speaker 5: Holland and Chris Miller, et cetera, meeting with you. Know,
- 10:02Speaker 5: these guys are are great community leaders and this is
- 10:05Speaker 5: always a fun convention to get to speak at because
- 10:08Speaker 5: of how much fun and how great all of our
- 10:10Speaker 5: our local car dealers are.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Attorney General J. M. Mcuskey, always a pleasure to have
- 10:14Speaker 2: you on the show. We'll talk again soon, Prova. Maybe
- 10:16Speaker 2: we'll get you back on on the network show on
- 10:18Speaker 2: Thursday or so if we get a decision on that case.
- 10:21Speaker 5: If we get a decision, Dave, I will be on
- 10:23Speaker 5: with you.
- 10:23Speaker 2: All right, noted, appreciate it man, Thanks a lot.

- 13:44Speaker 2: I am doing well. Thank you for being here. I
- 13:45Speaker 2: guess you guys are getting ready for this big golf
- 13:48Speaker 2: tournament Sleepy Hollow next week.
- 13:50Speaker 9: We are.
- 13:50Speaker 10: We're gearing up for our forty second annual Putnam Chamber
- 13:53Speaker 10: Golf Tournament. We're really excited to host it at Sleepy Hollow,
- 13:57Speaker 10: and we've got a full course of golfers headed out
- 14:01Speaker 10: on Monday morning. But we still have opportunity to participate
- 14:04Speaker 10: in some of our other stuff if people are interested.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I mean, the golf tournament itself is pretty much sold out, right.
- 14:10Speaker 10: Correct, Yeah, yeah, the golf to golf it is sold out,
- 14:14Speaker 10: But we do still have opportunities for whole sponsors if
- 14:18Speaker 10: you want to come out and promote your products to
- 14:22Speaker 10: the golfers that are going to be out there, or
- 14:24Speaker 10: we've got other sponsorships still available as well, or if
- 14:28Speaker 10: you just want to come out and volunteer and see
- 14:30Speaker 10: what golf tournament's all about, well, we'll gladly put you
- 14:33Speaker 10: to work.
- 14:33Speaker 2: One of my favorite places of Sleepy Hollow, and I
- 14:36Speaker 2: know those guys. Just do it, guys, and do a
- 14:37Speaker 2: fantastic job because you know, you've had that event there
- 14:40Speaker 2: for as long as I can remember it, oh decades,
- 14:43Speaker 2: and they always do a great, great job there Sleepy Hollow.
- 14:46Speaker 7: They do.
- 14:47Speaker 10: Yeah, we're so fortunate to have such an amazing golf
- 14:50Speaker 10: club here in Putnam County and to be able to
- 14:52Speaker 10: host our tournament there is a real, real enjoyable experience
- 14:57Speaker 10: and an asset to not only us and our members
- 14:59Speaker 10: because it is as a private club, so a lot
- 15:01Speaker 10: of our folks at golf with us don't generally get
- 15:03Speaker 10: to golf there, so that's a special treat as well.
- 15:05Speaker 10: But we couldn't do it without the team there that
- 15:09Speaker 10: work at Sleepy Hollow. They work really hard for us
- 15:12Speaker 10: on Monday and make sure that the tournament goes off perfectly,
- 15:16Speaker 10: So we are very appreciative of them.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And of course, all the money raiins goes back to
- 15:19Speaker 2: the programs of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and
- 15:21Speaker 2: you folks just do so much for not only Putnham
- 15:24Speaker 2: County but the surrounding areas. If people want to do
- 15:27Speaker 2: sponsorship or they like they want to sponsor a hole
- 15:30Speaker 2: or whatever, they just contact you. What's the best way
- 15:32Speaker 2: to do that.
- 15:33Speaker 10: Yeah, they can contact me here at the office. They
- 15:36Speaker 10: can call three four some five seven six y five
- 15:39Speaker 10: one zero, or they can email us at Chamber at
- 15:41Speaker 10: Putnam County dot org.
- 15:43Speaker 2: You also have a State of the Valley coming up
- 15:46Speaker 2: here real soon, and that's kind of a collaborative effort
- 15:49Speaker 2: Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, the Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce,
- 15:52Speaker 2: and Charleston Area Alliance. And I will say, you must
- 15:55Speaker 2: really be scraping the bottom of the bear with moderators
- 15:57Speaker 2: if you ask me to do it this year.
- 16:00Speaker 10: Yeah, your official announcement to the official announcement of Dave
- 16:03Speaker 10: Allen moderating this year's State of the Valley. We're excited
- 16:06Speaker 10: to have you. We're so fortunate to be able to
- 16:09Speaker 10: get you off the air for a little bit and
- 16:11Speaker 10: for a couple of hours. After a couple hours, we'll
- 16:14Speaker 10: get you off the air, but put you still put
- 16:16Speaker 10: you to work, I guess so. Yeah. August nineteenth is
- 16:19Speaker 10: going to be the fourth annual State of the Valley
- 16:22Speaker 10: with us and our neighboring chambers of Commerce. This is
- 16:26Speaker 10: a this is a great opportunity for us as a
- 16:28Speaker 10: region to collaborate that that's always since the initiation of
- 16:32Speaker 10: this event, that has always kind of been the theme
- 16:34Speaker 10: is how do we hear, you know, an I sixty
- 16:37Speaker 10: four corridor collaborate together to ensure that, you know, all
- 16:41Speaker 10: of our businesses are thriving. And State of the Valley
- 16:44Speaker 10: is an opportunity for everybody in the communities to come
- 16:47Speaker 10: together and kind of talk about the successes that are
- 16:50Speaker 10: happening within our own within our own communities, as well
- 16:54Speaker 10: as how we're collaborating on a regional level to ensure
- 16:57Speaker 10: success here in the metro Valley.
- 16:59Speaker 2: And let me just say this, if you're in the
- 17:00Speaker 2: business community or concerned about you got to attend this event.
- 17:05Speaker 2: And I mean I haven't got to attend to the
- 17:08Speaker 2: last couple of years because of work, but I have
- 17:09Speaker 2: attended it in the past and it is absolutely phenomenal.
- 17:13Speaker 2: I mean, it pretty much sells out every year. So
- 17:16Speaker 2: if you haven't, I mean, I'm presuming now, because it's
- 17:18Speaker 2: not to August nineteenth, Ashley, I'm presuming that there are
- 17:20Speaker 2: still tickets.
- 17:21Speaker 10: Available right there are, Yeah, So the individual tickets are
- 17:24Speaker 10: available now as well as sponsorships are available. Now. You
- 17:29Speaker 10: can do sponsorships of a half table, a whole table,
- 17:33Speaker 10: or some higher level sponsorships of the event, which are
- 17:35Speaker 10: great promotional opportunities. As you mentioned, Dave, the event does
- 17:38Speaker 10: sell out, so this is a great opportunity to get
- 17:41Speaker 10: your name in front of the business community through the
- 17:44Speaker 10: metro valley at this event. And so if you are
- 17:48Speaker 10: interested in learning more about that, and you can reach
- 17:51Speaker 10: out to the chamber in which you're part of, whether
- 17:53Speaker 10: that's Puntington, Putnam or Charleston, or if you are a
- 17:58Speaker 10: part of all three, you can just reach out to
- 18:00Speaker 10: whoever you know, whoever's numbers quickest to dial. But you
- 18:05Speaker 10: can find out more at Putnam Chamber dot org slash
- 18:08Speaker 10: State of the Valley is where you'll find all that info.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And it really is an interesting event because it's one
- 18:14Speaker 2: of the only events like this that you have all
- 18:16Speaker 2: three of these groups, the Huntingtonary Chamber Commerce, the Putnam
- 18:20Speaker 2: County Chamber Commerce, and the Charleston Airy Alliance all coming together.
- 18:23Speaker 2: There's elected officials there, it's networking and it's not going
- 18:26Speaker 2: to take up your whole day. That's I mean, because
- 18:28Speaker 2: basically it's a luncheon and then there'll be panel discussions,
- 18:31Speaker 2: and as I said, I'm going to be moderating that
- 18:32Speaker 2: on August nineteenth. So it's a rare opportunity if you
- 18:35Speaker 2: do business in the Advantage Valley, the Vantage Corridor, whatever
- 18:39Speaker 2: you want to call it, Ashley, it's a rare opportunity
- 18:41Speaker 2: to have everybody in one spot.
- 18:44Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, it is. We We do try to collaborate
- 18:48Speaker 10: and partner as much as we possibly can, but this
- 18:51Speaker 10: is our largest event to be able to do so.
- 18:53Speaker 10: So we have, like I said, we've got all three
- 18:56Speaker 10: chambers here from Huntington all the way to Charleston working together,
- 19:01Speaker 10: and we'll have representatives on the panel from each of
- 19:04Speaker 10: those communities kind of talking about updates of what's going
- 19:07Speaker 10: on and celebrating some successes and again, like I said,
- 19:11Speaker 10: talking about that sphere of collaboration, which is really important
- 19:15Speaker 10: to all three of our chambers.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Talking again with actually offered glance for the Putnam County
- 19:18Speaker 2: Chamber of Commerce. So Dave Island Show in five eighty Live,
- 19:21Speaker 2: brought to you in part by Morgan to Morgan. If
- 19:23Speaker 2: You're injured higher Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm, Ashley,
- 19:26Speaker 2: what I've got you, I want to talk about the
- 19:27Speaker 2: continued growth in Putnam County because it has been an
- 19:30Speaker 2: area that's been on the move for a long time now.
- 19:33Speaker 2: We saw it really in the nineties and two thousands,
- 19:36Speaker 2: and it continues to do that. And man, it's like
- 19:38Speaker 2: that on steroids every time you drive down Tay's Valley
- 19:41Speaker 2: Road right now, with the houses that are going up,
- 19:43Speaker 2: housing developments from everywhere from Hurricane to Winfield in between.
- 19:48Speaker 2: You know, constant business openings over there. I mean, it's
- 19:52Speaker 2: it's it's really on the move right now. Putnam County.
- 19:55Speaker 10: Yeah, we're very fortunate that people really enjoy the quality
- 19:59Speaker 10: of life that we provide here in Putnam County, as
- 20:02Speaker 10: well as the opportunity to establish a business and to
- 20:06Speaker 10: grow a business. Being here in that I sixty four
- 20:09Speaker 10: corridor and in the center of it has always really
- 20:11Speaker 10: been our catalyst for growth because folks can live here
- 20:16Speaker 10: and maybe commute into Charles Center and Honeyton for work.
- 20:19Speaker 10: But what we're actually seeing now, which is a little
- 20:22Speaker 10: bit different, is more people are living here and working here.
- 20:25Speaker 10: So when you you know, reference the nineties and people
- 20:28Speaker 10: kind of talking about living here that we did see
- 20:32Speaker 10: a huge boom and we actually celebrated our in the nineties,
- 20:37Speaker 10: our fiftieth about fifty thousandth resident in Putnam County back
- 20:43Speaker 10: then and now we're up close to sixty thousand. Actually,
- 20:47Speaker 10: I had been looking through some historic information through some
- 20:50Speaker 10: of our stuff for the Chamber and found a news
- 20:52Speaker 10: article about that, which I thought was interesting and a
- 20:55Speaker 10: fun way to showcase the growth. But back in the nineties, know,
- 21:00Speaker 10: a lot of folks were moving here because they were
- 21:01Speaker 10: working in Charleston or they were working in Huntington and
- 21:04Speaker 10: it was a nice, easy commute to get there. And
- 21:06Speaker 10: now the growth that we're seeing is a little bit
- 21:08Speaker 10: different in that people are moving here to also work here.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Wow, and have you got some of the best schools
- 21:14Speaker 2: anywhere in the state of West Virginia that are there?
- 21:16Speaker 2: That doesn't hurt no.
- 21:18Speaker 10: That is one of our main main selling points and
- 21:21Speaker 10: one of the main reasons people do do desire to
- 21:24Speaker 10: live here in Putnam County is to gain access to
- 21:26Speaker 10: our Punta County school system and a lot of the
- 21:27Speaker 10: other assets that we have available for families such as
- 21:31Speaker 10: recreation parks, outdoor activities, sports, whatever it is that they're
- 21:36Speaker 10: interested in outside of you know, school and work. Being
- 21:40Speaker 10: able to have all that asset close to home.
- 21:41Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:42Speaker 10: One of the things that I always say is that
- 21:44Speaker 10: we have we have everything you need here in Putnam
- 21:48Speaker 10: County and access to everything that you want, meaning that
- 21:51Speaker 10: everything that you need on your daily life, you know,
- 21:54Speaker 10: wake up, work, go to school, groceries, parks, that kind
- 21:57Speaker 10: of stuff, we have it all here. Doctors tell care
- 22:00Speaker 10: all that you need is here, and then if you
- 22:03Speaker 10: want to experience some other stuff, we have that close
- 22:06Speaker 10: proximity to Honeyton and Charleston where you're going to find
- 22:09Speaker 10: you know, like the Charleston Dirty Birds and the museums
- 22:12Speaker 10: and things like that. Those assets are just just a
- 22:14Speaker 10: short drive away. So that's kind of the motto that
- 22:17Speaker 10: here the chamber we live by and that one in
- 22:20Speaker 10: addition to why people want to move to Pundham County,
- 22:22Speaker 10: it's the people, but that is that is one of
- 22:26Speaker 10: the major selling points that continues to further our growth
- 22:31Speaker 10: here in Punham County.
- 22:32Speaker 2: And it was there was a time Ashley, You're right
- 22:34Speaker 2: when people just saw it as a bedroom community. I
- 22:36Speaker 2: mean people would get off on the hurricane or Taye
- 22:39Speaker 2: Valley accident or living in Eleanor or Buffalo wherever they were,
- 22:42Speaker 2: and they would go to Charleston, they would go to Huntington.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Will a couple of things have happened. Number One, more
- 22:46Speaker 2: and more people are working from home now. But number two,
- 22:48Speaker 2: there are more and more people that are opening businesses
- 22:51Speaker 2: that you know, and God bless hertain because we have
- 22:53Speaker 2: a collaborative effort going on with Huntington and Charleston here.
- 22:55Speaker 2: But I mean there's people that are choosing to live, work, play,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and do everything in Putnam County.
- 23:01Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah, yeah, we you know, I think too. One
- 23:04Speaker 10: of the things that is a little bit different here
- 23:06Speaker 10: in West Virginia is that we are so kind of
- 23:08Speaker 10: centralized in our thought about like you live in a county,
- 23:11Speaker 10: you work in a county. Everything is about your your
- 23:14Speaker 10: city or your county or whatever. And you know, if
- 23:16Speaker 10: you go to other states and you go to larger cities,
- 23:18Speaker 10: larger metro areas, or even if you go out to
- 23:21Speaker 10: other places that are more rural that have like one
- 23:24Speaker 10: larger city, they don't they don't really talk about it
- 23:26Speaker 10: as far as you know, they don't know what county
- 23:28Speaker 10: they're in. They don't. That's yeah, I mean when you
- 23:34Speaker 10: go like where, you know, where'd you just travel, Dave,
- 23:36Speaker 10: didn't you go down to Georgia? Yeah? Did you know
- 23:39Speaker 10: what county you were in? Well?
- 23:40Speaker 2: I did. I was in Glenn County. But this just
- 23:42Speaker 2: because I'm a geek about stuff like that. I'm a
- 23:44Speaker 2: geek about the average person who doesn't know that.
- 23:48Speaker 10: Yeah, I can guarantee. You know, when folks are traveling,
- 23:51Speaker 10: you know, they're they're going to a destination and whether
- 23:54Speaker 10: that be a city or a specific thing, uh, you know,
- 23:57Speaker 10: a specific tourism drawl or whatever it is, they're not
- 24:00Speaker 10: really paying that close attention. So I think, you know,
- 24:04Speaker 10: one of the things that that bringing it back to
- 24:06Speaker 10: the state of the Valley is that we are really
- 24:08Speaker 10: trying to focus on, you know, showcasing us as a region.
- 24:13Speaker 10: And you know that you don't know you're allowed to
- 24:18Speaker 10: leave the county line. You can go past it. There's
- 24:20Speaker 10: no they're not going to give you a ticket. People
- 24:23Speaker 10: do jokes that I don't leave my county, but I.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Don't know how you would have county or that I'm
- 24:29Speaker 2: not allowed.
- 24:29Speaker 10: I guess. But the reality is is as far as
- 24:33Speaker 10: West Virginia is concerned, and as far as the southern
- 24:35Speaker 10: part of West Virginia and the metro region of West
- 24:38Speaker 10: Virginia is concerned. We are very fortunate to have the
- 24:42Speaker 10: area that we do, to be able to help businesses
- 24:45Speaker 10: grow and to help families thrive.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And it is true what you said. I laughed about
- 24:50Speaker 2: that about how West Virginians and and and and I
- 24:53Speaker 2: think it's more of an Appalachian or maybe a Southern thing.
- 24:56Speaker 2: We do have a tendency to know what county we
- 24:58Speaker 2: live in. Because I was doing some prime with the
- 25:00Speaker 2: folks a couple of years ago before I started this
- 25:02Speaker 2: job with a small business administration, and I remember one
- 25:05Speaker 2: of the people saying to me, this is the only
- 25:08Speaker 2: area that I've been to that you all know what
- 25:10Speaker 2: county you live in. And this lady was based out
- 25:13Speaker 2: of the Philadelphia area. She said, most of the people
- 25:15Speaker 2: I incount have no idea what county they live in.
- 25:17Speaker 2: But this is something I guess we do in West Virginia.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Before I let you go, I know you're busy, I
- 25:21Speaker 2: do want to ask you about business after Hours. There's
- 25:23Speaker 2: a business after Hours coming up this weekend. It's celebrating
- 25:26Speaker 2: celebrating a very very special company in Putnam County.
- 25:29Speaker 10: Oh you know what, Dave, this, I'm so glad you
- 25:32Speaker 10: we save time for this. We are celebrating on Thursday evening.
- 25:36Speaker 10: We are celebrating fifty years of Randolph Engineering. The Rantoff
- 25:41Speaker 10: family started their engineering firm here in Putnam County fifty
- 25:44Speaker 10: years ago and we are so fortunate to be able
- 25:47Speaker 10: to have them here and we're going to be celebrating
- 25:50Speaker 10: with their business after hours on Thursday evening.
- 25:52Speaker 2: And it starts at what time and it'll be at
- 25:54Speaker 2: Randolph Engineering and will be at.
- 25:56Speaker 10: Yeah, five o'clock at Randolph Engineering. They're office is on
- 26:00Speaker 10: Tays Valley Road, and I'm forgetting I don't know the
- 26:04Speaker 10: exact contr's find it on our web, Yeah Chamber dot org.
- 26:09Speaker 10: All of our events are on our event calendar. So
- 26:11Speaker 10: everything that you and I talked about today today, Dave
- 26:14Speaker 10: is on there on the event calendar at Putnam Chamber
- 26:17Speaker 10: dot org. If you are a current member or if
- 26:20Speaker 10: you would like to explore membership opportunities here with the
- 26:23Speaker 10: Putnam Chamber, we would love to have that conversation.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Ashley Off for Glance, Executive Director, Putnam County Chamber of Commerce.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Always a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll
- 26:30Speaker 2: have you back on again as we get ready for
- 26:32Speaker 2: the big event in August there okay, the state of
- 26:34Speaker 2: the Valley.
- 26:35Speaker 10: Appreciate Gay all right, thank you.
- 26:37Speaker 2: You as well. Nastally off for glance again, Executive director
- 26:40Speaker 2: of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and that big
- 26:43Speaker 2: that event that save the Valley is a huge event.
- 26:46Speaker 2: If you get an opportunity, uh to join us for that.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It's August nineteenth, and it will be at Valley Park
- 26:52Speaker 2: and it generally speaking does sell out, so we want
- 26:55Speaker 2: to make sure that you get your tickets for that early.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Contacted folks that the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and
- 27:01Speaker 2: it is a unique event because again you've got the
- 27:03Speaker 2: Chambers of Putnam County. You got the Huntington Area Chamber
- 27:09Speaker 2: of Commerce, which is not just for Huntington. It's called
- 27:12Speaker 2: Huntington Area for a reason, and they actually go actually
- 27:16Speaker 2: a little bit outside even Cable County. And then you
- 27:18Speaker 2: got the Charleston Airy Alliance and every elected official from
- 27:20Speaker 2: the area. Most of them are there for this event.
- 27:23Speaker 2: And as I said, maybe scraping the bottom of the
- 27:25Speaker 2: barrel because they got me to be the MC or
- 27:27Speaker 2: the moderator, so I'll be there for that on August
- 27:30Speaker 2: the nineteenth, and they tell me. Because I was wondering
- 27:35Speaker 2: first thing when Ashley asked me to do this. You
- 27:37Speaker 2: know if I attended in the past, but I've never
- 27:39Speaker 2: been a moderator. She I said, well, I'm on the air.
- 27:41Speaker 2: She said, no, We're going to work this out. So
- 27:43Speaker 2: I'm going to do the local show that day, head
- 27:45Speaker 2: to Putnam County, do the event, and be back by
- 27:47Speaker 2: two o'clock for the two o'clock hour. That's what they
- 27:49Speaker 2: tell me. Unmatured, it's midday. That's not till August nineteenth.
- 27:52Speaker 2: I got plenty of time to get all that figured out.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Twenty four minutes away from ten Trojan Landy Marine and

- 29:37Speaker 11: We've done a number of projects with Jarrett Construction. Any
- 29:40Speaker 11: people that really care about what they do and care
- 29:42Speaker 11: about what we do is pretty unique in Jarrett Construction
- 29:46Speaker 11: fake care. They're really really good people. Good people do
- 29:49Speaker 11: the right thing, and they're very skilled. They have all
- 29:51Speaker 11: the qualities that make up just a perfect construction partner,
- 29:54Speaker 11: and they just stilled us a phenomenal.

- 30:09Speaker 14: of trust, ten years of service, and ten years of
- 30:12Speaker 14: building lasting relationships with drivers throughout our community. So what's
- 30:16Speaker 14: the secret to longevity in the car business. Well, if
- 30:19Speaker 14: you ask Gene and Ryan, they're going to tell you
- 30:21Speaker 14: that it's pretty simple.
- 30:22Speaker 2: You see.
- 30:22Speaker 14: That's because they built their business the old fashioned way
- 30:25Speaker 14: by making friends. There are no gimmicks or games at Walker,
- 30:28Speaker 14: just honest, fair deals. Like right now, you can take

- 32:17Speaker 2: all three. Two of those three have already dropped, available
- 32:20Speaker 2: on Metro News Television. The third will drop Thursday night
- 32:22Speaker 2: at seven thirty. That's with Data sleezk again, the executive
- 32:25Speaker 2: vice president of Energy Infrastructure Investments at QTS Data Centers.
- 32:28Speaker 2: To be sure and check it out. Available on Metro
- 32:30Speaker 2: News Television and again. The third and final one will
- 32:32Speaker 2: drop Thursday night at seven thirty I exclusively on Metro
- 32:35Speaker 2: News Television, presented by Hope Gas and by Career Industries Texas. Dude,
- 32:40Speaker 2: you failed in prov one oh one. You were supposed
- 32:42Speaker 2: to do the yes and response to Ashley offered glances
- 32:45Speaker 2: question about not knowing the county in Florida, not saying
- 32:49Speaker 2: that you checked the county because you're nerd. Well, it's
- 32:52Speaker 2: actually Georgia. And I did know what county I was
- 32:54Speaker 2: in because I'm a geek about that. It's just my
- 32:56Speaker 2: It's my thing, man, it's my thing.
- 32:58Speaker 15: I thought the same thing, though, thought the same thing
- 33:00Speaker 15: the TEXTRA did. I just said no, kind of ruined it.
- 33:03Speaker 15: But I understand that. But I know who you are.
- 33:05Speaker 2: So I'm the I'm the kid that Matt's that's the
- 33:09Speaker 2: voice of Matt Sutton by the way, that I'm the
- 33:12Speaker 2: kid that, like you know, I've told the story before. Uh,
- 33:17Speaker 2: when I was in elementary school, Matt, I was so
- 33:19Speaker 2: bad at art, I mean I was terrible, could not
- 33:21Speaker 2: draw anything that the teachers said, we're just gonna let
- 33:25Speaker 2: David that was my name. We're gonna let David read
- 33:28Speaker 2: encyclopedias and give him a bee in art. And my
- 33:30Speaker 2: mom said, I'm okay with that. So like the first
- 33:32Speaker 2: three years of my great you know, kindergarten through like
- 33:35Speaker 2: fourth grade, I did no art. I read encyclopedias. So
- 33:38Speaker 2: what does that tell you about.
- 33:40Speaker 15: It seemed like could be a great story if the
- 33:41Speaker 15: inding would have been you turned out to be an artist.
- 33:44Speaker 2: Turn if I would have turned out to get a
- 33:46Speaker 2: real job, you know, not talking.
- 33:48Speaker 15: To talking on the radios and art, there's no doubt
- 33:50Speaker 15: about it. But no, I was first of all, I
- 33:53Speaker 15: enjoyed Ashley. I enjoyed that conversation because that that is true.
- 33:55Speaker 15: It is a weird thing that about us in our counties,
- 33:58Speaker 15: like and I think people even when we talked to him,
- 34:00Speaker 15: you know, and it's it's funny even when folks coming
- 34:02Speaker 15: to town and they're like, I'm looking for this building,
- 34:04Speaker 15: I'm like looking for the city building and the county building,
- 34:06Speaker 15: Like what's the county building?
- 34:07Speaker 3: It's right there.
- 34:08Speaker 2: So well, and I do think it tends to be
- 34:11Speaker 2: matt a Apalachic or southern thing too, because I've spent
- 34:14Speaker 2: a lot of time in places far far more southern
- 34:18Speaker 2: than what West Virginia is and it is. It's a
- 34:21Speaker 2: big Now, don't try that in Tyler County. I just
- 34:23Speaker 2: made that up, by the way, you know, I.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Wouldn't try in Tyler County. Yes, it sounds right, all right.
- 34:28Speaker 2: The USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships back at the
- 34:30Speaker 2: Capital City. Matt Sutton the voice you've been hearing the
- 34:32Speaker 2: chief of staff for Charleston Mayor Amy Schueler, A good one,
- 34:34Speaker 2: he joins us this morning in the Jeneric Construction studios.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Good morning, Sarah, Welcome into the show. You know, they've
- 34:39Speaker 2: been pouring into town for the last couple of days.
- 34:42Speaker 2: And I hit Virginia Street around seven this morning. There
- 34:45Speaker 2: were already people everywhere this morning. And they've been been
- 34:47Speaker 2: that way for the last couple of days.
- 34:49Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean they came into town a little bit
- 34:51Speaker 15: late last week, and then after live and a Levy
- 34:54Speaker 15: on Friday, they began setting up immediately. You know, it's
- 34:56Speaker 15: a big operation. Though, we feel much more comfortable about
- 35:00Speaker 15: it this year. I remember sitting in the last two
- 35:01Speaker 15: meetings and kind of, you know, staring around and the
- 35:05Speaker 15: will who works for Metalist Cycling, and he would kind
- 35:08Speaker 15: of say, was anybody have any questions, and everybody just
- 35:10Speaker 15: kind of sat there because we've done this for the
- 35:11Speaker 15: third year now and for the most part it's it's
- 35:15Speaker 15: pretty much exactly the same, right, I Mean, the days
- 35:17Speaker 15: have changed and some of the times, but the road
- 35:19Speaker 15: closures are pretty much the same, the setup is the same,
- 35:22Speaker 15: the races are the same this year without the the
- 35:25Speaker 15: we took away one event from last year, and other
- 35:27Speaker 15: than that, everything has pretty much remained the same. So
- 35:29Speaker 15: our team is pretty well versed in how to set
- 35:32Speaker 15: up I think the community is much more excited about
- 35:34Speaker 15: it this year.
- 35:35Speaker 3: What we've seen is, you know, kind of the first year,
- 35:36Speaker 3: we didn't know what was going to happen.
- 35:38Speaker 15: We didn't know how, you don't know what, you don't know, yeah,
- 35:40Speaker 15: and so it was one of those things to where
- 35:41Speaker 15: we just focused on the race, making sure we could
- 35:44Speaker 15: pull it off. Then last year we expanded a little
- 35:46Speaker 15: bit more to the watch areas and having a few
- 35:48Speaker 15: more activities, and then this year is really the focus
- 35:52Speaker 15: I think is mainly on, you know, we can pull
- 35:54Speaker 15: off the event, but having these watch parties and having
- 35:57Speaker 15: the areas where people can celebrate cycling, being in town.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Having June tenth in the middle of it.
- 36:01Speaker 15: Having alive on the levee in the middle of it
- 36:02Speaker 15: makes it really exciting for the entire city. It comes
- 36:05Speaker 15: with the road closures. We all know that, and we
- 36:07Speaker 15: know to be prepared for them. But it is one
- 36:09Speaker 15: of those things where it has gotten to the point
- 36:11Speaker 15: where after cycling stops, once we get into August, people
- 36:16Speaker 15: will start to say, man, I can't wait for the
- 36:17Speaker 15: bike race to come back. So it's something who's now
- 36:19Speaker 15: become the fabric of a part of our town and
- 36:21Speaker 15: we're really excited about that.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Approximately And I know this is coming off the top
- 36:26Speaker 2: rope with this, but I mean, exactly, give give me
- 36:29Speaker 2: a ballpark on how many areas are represented? How many states,
- 36:33Speaker 2: how many countries? I mean, I know it's probably a
- 36:35Speaker 2: good question for Tim Brady as well, but I mean,
- 36:37Speaker 2: just if you had to guess, Matt, I mean, how many,
- 36:40Speaker 2: how many different states? How many I.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Don't know about countries.
- 36:43Speaker 15: I mean I think most of most of the USA cyclings,
- 36:45Speaker 15: I think it's mostly people. We have some North American Yeah,
- 36:48Speaker 15: we have some North American athletes as well, but I
- 36:51Speaker 15: think there was something like thirty five states last year
- 36:54Speaker 15: where writers came from them.
- 36:56Speaker 3: Number may be higher, but it's somewhere from there.
- 36:58Speaker 15: I think it was it was over half the states
- 37:01Speaker 15: that had cyclists participating. And then obviously you have staff
- 37:03Speaker 15: come from anywhere. But as big a deal of that
- 37:05Speaker 15: is is it's the visitors that come to town, right.
- 37:09Speaker 15: So you know when the cycling the card last year,
- 37:12Speaker 15: of all the spending that it cared and Charleston during
- 37:14Speaker 15: those days, thirteen percent was from people who were fifty
- 37:16Speaker 15: miles away or more. So you can see that kind
- 37:18Speaker 15: of spending and that kind of visitor activity is what's
- 37:21Speaker 15: important to us and really creates an exciting event because
- 37:26Speaker 15: as we've said, the mayor set a million times, we've
- 37:28Speaker 15: all said it. Secretary of Ruby says that, Governor Morrissey
- 37:31Speaker 15: says it's center, or Justice says it. Everybody says that
- 37:33Speaker 15: if we can get people to visit West Virginia once,
- 37:34Speaker 15: we'll get them to come back. And that's what something
- 37:37Speaker 15: like USA Cycling does and we've been really proud of.
- 37:39Speaker 15: And it's also something that is it's important that people
- 37:43Speaker 15: get to see and experience our city because it leads
- 37:46Speaker 15: to other events. And I know Tim says this all
- 37:48Speaker 15: the time, but it really is the hospitality that Charleston
- 37:51Speaker 15: and West Virginia show to these national events when they
- 37:53Speaker 15: come here leads to more events because these folks talk
- 37:56Speaker 15: to each other and it does lead to other things.
- 37:58Speaker 15: Right after USA Cycling lead, USA Gymnastics comes to the
- 38:01Speaker 15: Colisemic Convention Center, and that's a direct result from our
- 38:03Speaker 15: relationship with USA Cycling and how this works.
- 38:05Speaker 2: To talk about that, because this is a fascinating story
- 38:08Speaker 2: about how you got the gymnastics. I mean, based on
- 38:11Speaker 2: the bike event, what.
- 38:12Speaker 15: Actually all goes back to if you remember, we got
- 38:15Speaker 15: a USA Junior table Tennis event somewhere, remember, and it
- 38:18Speaker 15: kind of it goes all the way back to that.
- 38:20Speaker 15: It actually goes back a little bit further than that
- 38:21Speaker 15: with USA Volleyball being in conjunction with that and an
- 38:24Speaker 15: event with I think wrestling that we didn't get. But
- 38:27Speaker 15: it's one of those things where you start to build
- 38:29Speaker 15: these relationships. It is a small community. These events that
- 38:32Speaker 15: travel all over the place. They talk to each other
- 38:34Speaker 15: and they get to experience things in Charleston that they
- 38:36Speaker 15: don't get the experience everywhere else. You know, it's it's
- 38:39Speaker 15: not everywhere where your mayor helped set up the barricades
- 38:42Speaker 15: for the cycling event. Right, it's not everywhere where the
- 38:44Speaker 15: first people shaking the cow bell that's standing in the
- 38:47Speaker 15: middle when the cyclists come down, our city council members
- 38:49Speaker 15: and you have. You know, it's important when folks who
- 38:51Speaker 15: are in city council.
- 38:52Speaker 3: Or even our.
- 38:53Speaker 15: County commissioners and our mayor are standing there thanking our
- 38:56Speaker 15: sponsors like that's part of their job and that's part
- 38:58Speaker 15: of something that makes us a special place. So when
- 39:01Speaker 15: we have these relationships and we build them, it only
- 39:03Speaker 15: leads to next event. So USA table tennis leads to volleyball,
- 39:07Speaker 15: leads to cycling, now leads to gymnastics, and it's just
- 39:10Speaker 15: going to continue to continue to grow and continue to
- 39:12Speaker 15: grow because we are centrally located. We are perfectly located
- 39:16Speaker 15: in the country for these type of events. Not only that,
- 39:19Speaker 15: but we are you know, we have what these events love,
- 39:22Speaker 15: which is sort of the lack of better term called
- 39:24Speaker 15: the park and play mentality where they can just park
- 39:26Speaker 15: their car, stay in their hotel, enjoy the restaurants, enjoy shopping,
- 39:29Speaker 15: and have their events. So if you're downtown, the cyclists
- 39:33Speaker 15: or the people who run the event, they can stay
- 39:35Speaker 15: right in the four points they walk right out their
- 39:36Speaker 15: front door of the hotel and they're at the start
- 39:38Speaker 15: finish line and all of the logistics are right there.
- 39:40Speaker 15: They never have to get back in their car once
- 39:42Speaker 15: they leave here until they go, you know, run the route.
- 39:45Speaker 15: You have cyclists who can move around town very easily.
- 39:47Speaker 15: They're staying with residents, they stay in airbnb's, they stay
- 39:50Speaker 15: in hotels, and they can move around town easily and
- 39:52Speaker 15: they don't ever have to worry about getting their car.
- 39:54Speaker 3: It's not expensive place, you know.
- 39:57Speaker 15: I always tell a story when we were pitching when
- 39:59Speaker 15: USA Volleyball pitching, they had when they were in Chicago,
- 40:01Speaker 15: I think it.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Was Chicago a few years before that.
- 40:03Speaker 15: They had a two hundred thousand dollars transportation budget once
- 40:06Speaker 15: they got to the city of Chicago just getting the
- 40:08Speaker 15: athletes from their hotels in the bushes on the South Yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 15: and in Charleston it was zero because they just parked
- 40:14Speaker 15: their car, stayed at the Marriott, stayed at the Embassy,
- 40:16Speaker 15: and just walked to the coliseumic Convention Center.
- 40:18Speaker 3: So it's the kind of things that we have.
- 40:20Speaker 15: But we've got to be able to have those relationships
- 40:22Speaker 15: to get here, and that's why it is so important
- 40:24Speaker 15: that we have, you know, places like the CVB with
- 40:26Speaker 15: Tim and Jama and Lauren and their entire team. We
- 40:29Speaker 15: have a mayor who's willing to meet with these folks
- 40:31Speaker 15: prior to the event and help with the event. We
- 40:33Speaker 15: have a city team, We have city council members who
- 40:35Speaker 15: walk around they thank sponsors.
- 40:36Speaker 3: That's not just cycling.
- 40:37Speaker 15: That's cycling, that's Regatta, that's you know, Juneteenth, that's multifest.
- 40:42Speaker 15: When you have people who are leaders in our community
- 40:44Speaker 15: participated in the events, that stuff matters and people recognize that.
- 40:47Speaker 15: I promise you they recognize that because they tell us
- 40:49Speaker 15: they do and it's meaningful to them. So when you
- 40:51Speaker 15: have sponsors who say, yeah, it was really nice to
- 40:53Speaker 15: get to meet city council members, or when you have
- 40:56Speaker 15: an event host two says man, we've never met with
- 40:59Speaker 15: a mayor before. That kind of stuff sticks with them
- 41:01Speaker 15: and they'll go back and they'll tell their friends who
- 41:02Speaker 15: do similar things. And we've seen it work. It's not
- 41:04Speaker 15: a theory. It's actually worked over the last three years.
- 41:07Speaker 2: And the people in Charleston, the people that live in Charleston,
- 41:09Speaker 2: the people that work in Charleston, they all want to know,
- 41:12Speaker 2: how does this impact me, and it would be impossible
- 41:14Speaker 2: for us on the radio to perfectly explain it. That's
- 41:17Speaker 2: why you know, you've got websites, why you get social
- 41:20Speaker 2: media and so on and so forth. But just take
- 41:22Speaker 2: us through today. I mean, like, as I said, I
- 41:24Speaker 2: pulled into Charleston about seven o'clock this morning, so a
- 41:26Speaker 2: couple of side streets were already blocked off. The boulevard
- 41:28Speaker 2: was blocked off. No problems on Virginia Street or Corey
- 41:31Speaker 2: or any any of those.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Today is simple.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Today is simple?
- 41:34Speaker 3: Today simple?
- 41:35Speaker 10: All right?
- 41:35Speaker 15: Yeah, Yeah, Today's just the boulevard and in any road
- 41:38Speaker 15: that accesses the boulevard.
- 41:39Speaker 3: It's the time trials.
- 41:40Speaker 15: So they run up and down the boulevard as fast
- 41:41Speaker 15: as they can, or bike uping down them the boulevard
- 41:44Speaker 15: fast they can. And today's just the boulevard they were in.
- 41:47Speaker 15: They started, they started set up around you know, five am,
- 41:50Speaker 15: started racing already.
- 41:51Speaker 3: They'll be done about four.
- 41:53Speaker 15: Over the last couple of years, they did this over
- 41:55Speaker 15: two days. We're doing ever one day this year. That's
- 41:56Speaker 15: why it lasts a little bit longer. But they'll be
- 41:58Speaker 15: out of they'll be out of the area before or
- 42:00Speaker 15: people start leaving the work. Tomorrow is when things get
- 42:02Speaker 15: a little bit complicated downtown. Tomorrow and Thursday is when
- 42:06Speaker 15: we have the criteria in races downtown that essentially will start.
- 42:09Speaker 15: They'll start set up about four, but the hard closures
- 42:12Speaker 15: start at five tomorrow evening Tomorrow evening. Yet tomorrow five
- 42:15Speaker 15: pm tomorrow morning, you're not gonna have any issues going around.
- 42:18Speaker 15: Now you'll have the Boulevard, which is the you know
- 42:19Speaker 15: where the start finished line is still shut down. So
- 42:22Speaker 15: you don't want to travel on the Boulevard tomorrow, but
- 42:24Speaker 15: into downtown. Really think about it. From Court Street to
- 42:28Speaker 15: Hall Street, Lee Street to the Boulevard at five pm,
- 42:32Speaker 15: you're locked in. You're not going anywhere. So if you're
- 42:35Speaker 15: in that footprint Court Street to Hall Lead to the boulevard,
- 42:39Speaker 15: you're stuck. So if you want to stay downtown for
- 42:41Speaker 15: the races, you don't want to stay all night. Just
- 42:43Speaker 15: go park outside, walk right back in. It's three blocks Dave.
- 42:46Speaker 15: It's not far away, So go park out, come back in.
- 42:49Speaker 15: If you're at work, leave a little bit early. If
- 42:51Speaker 15: you're leaving out of town, you'll try to get out
- 42:53Speaker 15: right before five so that you can make sure that
- 42:55Speaker 15: you can get out of town. We have a little
- 42:56Speaker 15: bit of wiggle room in there, so nobody's gonna get
- 42:58Speaker 15: stuck if they need to. The police officers are there
- 43:01Speaker 15: to be able to help people out in cases of emergency,
- 43:03Speaker 15: but really we need folks out of town by five
- 43:05Speaker 15: point fifteen in that little block area.
- 43:08Speaker 3: But just move your car. That's what I do.
- 43:10Speaker 15: I'm just go move my car over to a side
- 43:12Speaker 15: street a few blocks away, and then I walk in
- 43:15Speaker 15: and then I'm able to enjoy the event, eat downtown,
- 43:18Speaker 15: watch the racing, and then get in my car and
- 43:20Speaker 15: easily get home. So it's but Wednesday and Thursday, those
- 43:23Speaker 15: are the big Those are the big closures.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Court to Hale lead of the boulevard. Those are going
- 43:29Speaker 3: to be locked down.
- 43:29Speaker 15: The boulevard's lockdown all week, and then maybe I'll come
- 43:32Speaker 15: back Thursday. We can talk about Friday, Saturday, Sunday. That'll
- 43:35Speaker 15: probably probably be easier. The road races are a little
- 43:38Speaker 15: bit more complicated. Those are mostly rolling closures, but that
- 43:41Speaker 15: hard closures starting tomorrow at five pm. It's really hard
- 43:46Speaker 15: for us to break those because that's if you've seen
- 43:48Speaker 15: the Criterion race, that's fast. There's not a whole lot
- 43:50Speaker 15: of time to get cars out and to move around the.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Thing that I guess really took me by surprise. Have
- 43:56Speaker 2: you never seen an event like this? A couple of
- 43:59Speaker 2: years ago, I guess probably the first year I was
- 44:02Speaker 2: down at five well it was actually another name. At
- 44:04Speaker 2: that time. We were doing a live broadcast on the
- 44:06Speaker 2: mountain and I was down there and I just could
- 44:08Speaker 2: not get over the speed that those bikes go by you.
- 44:12Speaker 2: I mean, that was the thing that just blew me away.
- 44:14Speaker 2: It was like, holy crap, look at that. See how
- 44:17Speaker 2: fast these guys are going.
- 44:18Speaker 3: It's insane.
- 44:19Speaker 15: I was talking with a friend of mine who's usually
- 44:20Speaker 15: out of town this week, but he's going to be
- 44:21Speaker 15: in and he was like, where do I stand? And
- 44:23Speaker 15: I was like, well, let's move you around during the
- 44:26Speaker 15: race so that you can get side of kind of
- 44:28Speaker 15: max exposure. But it is one of the more fascinating
- 44:31Speaker 15: sporting events I've ever watched, and I certainly ever watched live.
- 44:34Speaker 15: And I think it was the first year and even
- 44:35Speaker 15: last year. You know, it really is fascinating to sit
- 44:39Speaker 15: and watch. But also too that, you know, one of
- 44:42Speaker 15: the things the cyclists love about coming to Charleston is
- 44:44Speaker 15: how friendly people are. We say that a lot, but
- 44:46Speaker 15: it really is true. Like I know we used that
- 44:48Speaker 15: a lot of people. People in Virginia friendly, We really
- 44:50Speaker 15: are because folks from the house that aren't used to that,
- 44:53Speaker 15: but they love more than anything when you go up
- 44:55Speaker 15: and start asking them about their sport.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 44:57Speaker 15: So, I mean I'm just sitting there, I could see
- 44:58Speaker 15: cyclists who aren't in a race, and I walk up, like,
- 45:00Speaker 15: why is why is this person doing this? Why are
- 45:02Speaker 15: they doing this? I mean it's a ten minute conversation
- 45:04Speaker 15: about the the psychology of cycling and the sport itself
- 45:08Speaker 15: and how it moves around. But they really like that
- 45:09Speaker 15: because they're proud of what they do and they like
- 45:12Speaker 15: to they like to talk about It's just like any
- 45:14Speaker 15: athlete does.
- 45:14Speaker 3: So it is one of those things too.
- 45:15Speaker 15: Don't be shy about talking to the athletes, whether you
- 45:17Speaker 15: see them out on the street or whether you're you
- 45:20Speaker 15: know they're watching the race, because it really is fascinating
- 45:22Speaker 15: to get to learn, and there's not a whole lot
- 45:24Speaker 15: of sports where you get to do that, where you
- 45:25Speaker 15: can actually talk to somebody who participates in it while
- 45:27Speaker 15: it's happening. And it's even fun too, because if you
- 45:30Speaker 15: watch the criteria there'll be people who you know, get
- 45:33Speaker 15: knocked out of the race for one reason or the
- 45:35Speaker 15: other and they just sort of stand there and they'll
- 45:36Speaker 15: talk to everybody about, Oh, this is what happened.
- 45:38Speaker 3: Is what happened.
- 45:38Speaker 15: It's really fascinating and they're super nice people, and you know,
- 45:42Speaker 15: we want them to get to experience how pleasant people
- 45:45Speaker 15: in Charleston are, and that's why they like being here.
- 45:47Speaker 15: The cyclists come back more often than you think they do.
- 45:49Speaker 15: They come back during the year, mostly to you know,
- 45:52Speaker 15: to visit and to see friends and to shop around,
- 45:54Speaker 15: but also to get up Bridge Road to make sure
- 45:56Speaker 15: that they can still have the stamina to get up
- 45:57Speaker 15: the get up the hill. But it really is something
- 46:00Speaker 15: where the cyclists really do enjoy coming here, and that's
- 46:02Speaker 15: something we're very proud of because we've worked hard to
- 46:04Speaker 15: make that hospitality a big part of the city.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Where's the place where people can go for the easiest information,
- 46:09Speaker 2: I mean the city, the website, social media. Where's the
- 46:12Speaker 2: quick and I am going to try to squeeze you
- 46:14Speaker 2: in here on Thursday to come back just talk.
