Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On July 10th, 1960, CBS radio broadcast episode 431 of
- 0:06Speaker 1: Gunsmoke Reluctant Violence. In Dodge City, Homer Lately arrives with
- 0:13Speaker 1: a sack of gold and a public campaign against guns
- 0:16Speaker 1: and killing. His appeal pits idealism against public hostility in
- 0:20Speaker 1: a gun-carrying frontier town, while that conspicuous gold raises the
- 0:25Speaker 1: stakes for Marshal Matt Dillon. William Conrad stars as Dylan
- 0:31Speaker 1: with Parley Bear, Georgia Ellis, and Howard McNair. John Denner,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Joseph Kearns, and Sam Edwards are also heard. Marion Clark
- 0:40Speaker 1: wrote the broadcast, produced by Norman MacDonald. Here is the
- 0:44Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the Territory on West, there's
- 0:59Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:05Speaker 2: gun smoke. Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the
- 1:29Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America. And the story
- 1:33Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, the United States Marshal. The
- 1:39Speaker 3: first man they look for and the last they want
- 1:42Speaker 3: to meet. It's a chancy job, but it makes a
- 1:46Speaker 3: man watchful.
- 1:51Speaker 4: The End.
- 2:04Speaker 5: What?
- 2:06Speaker 6: You must be crazy going around talking like that.
- 2:09Speaker 5: I want the man to give up his gun.
- 2:11Speaker 7: It ain't hardly decent.
- 2:12Speaker 8: I assure you, I'm in my right mind.
- 2:15Speaker 9: Why, it would be a protection to all.
- 2:17Speaker 8: A protection?
- 2:18Speaker 7: It'd be like inviting your own killing.
- 2:20Speaker 9: That's right, Zach.
- 2:21Speaker 7: The man wouldn't be safe.
- 2:22Speaker 8: Oh, he'd be safer.
- 2:24Speaker 9: Now, you notice that I don't have a gun.
- 2:26Speaker 8: Yeah, and you ain't.
- 2:27Speaker 7: Safe, mister.
- 2:29Speaker 8: No one attempts to assault me.
- 2:30Speaker 9: Well, what did you do of the day?
- 2:32Speaker 7: Yeah, what would you do?
- 2:33Speaker 8: Well, no one has any reason.
- 2:35Speaker 9: What did you do if somebody.
- 2:36Speaker 7: Pushed you like that?
- 2:38Speaker 6: And knocked you off your.
- 2:41Speaker 9: Feet like that?
- 2:44Speaker 8: I'd walk away from you. Oh, you'd have to get
- 2:46Speaker 8: up first.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Now, a gun would have.
- 2:50Speaker 8: Come in handy now, wouldn't it, huh?
- 2:53Speaker 7: All right, hold on there. Leave that man alone.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Well, he kicked him.
- 2:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 8: Bless on you.
- 3:01Speaker 7: Hey, hey. Come on, let go of me now. That
- 3:04Speaker 7: other fellow's running off. Let him go.
- 3:07Speaker 6: Well, you should all let go of me too, Marshal.
- 3:09Speaker 7: We wasn't doing nothing. You don't think knocking an old
- 3:12Speaker 7: man down is anything, huh?
- 3:14Speaker 8: Why, he was talking crazy, Marshal.
- 3:16Speaker 7: So you knocked him down and kicked him? Well, you
- 3:18Speaker 7: want to take our guns away, Marshal.
- 3:20Speaker 8: I bet you were scared to death.
- 3:22Speaker 9: I thought he ain't coming around, Mr. Jones.
- 3:25Speaker 7: All right, Chester, you better go get Doc. Yeah, but
- 3:28Speaker 7: what about me? From now on, you get out of here.
- 3:31Speaker 7: But if anything serious is wrong with this man, I'll
- 3:34Speaker 7: come after you. Yeah, sure, Marshal, but.
- 3:37Speaker 5: We didn't mean no harm.
- 3:39Speaker 9: All right, go on.
- 3:40Speaker 7: All right, change my mind.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Go on.
- 4:01Speaker 7: You know, you better put your foot up on the rail, Kitty.
- 4:06Speaker 7: Having a drink at the bar is illegal without doing that.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Is it legal to stand here without drinking at all?
- 4:13Speaker 7: You'd know more about that than I would, since you
- 4:15Speaker 7: own the place.
- 4:17Speaker 6: Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to charge everybody
- 4:19Speaker 6: for just standing around the back.
- 4:21Speaker 7: I don't think you have to worry about that. Your
- 4:24Speaker 7: customers don't waste much time without glasses in their hands.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Sometimes I wish they would.
- 4:30Speaker 9: It's going to save wear and tear.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Hello, Kitty.
- 4:32Speaker 7: Oh, Matt.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Hello, Doc.
- 4:34Speaker 7: Hello, Doc. You going to give me one of your
- 4:36Speaker 7: old jokes about how you knew you'd find me wasting
- 4:39Speaker 7: time in here?
- 4:40Speaker 9: No, not today.
- 4:42Speaker 7: No.
- 4:43Speaker 6: It's hot outside if this is the only sensible place
- 4:45Speaker 6: to be.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Even for you.
- 4:48Speaker 9: Hey, better remember he said that, Matt. It may never
- 4:52Speaker 9: happen again.
- 4:52Speaker 7: You're so right, Kitty.
- 4:54Speaker 5: I'll see you two later.
- 4:55Speaker 9: I'm going to check these things with Sam.
- 4:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Yeah, Doc.
- 5:01Speaker 7: How's the old man?
- 5:02Speaker 9: Oh, uh, old man lately? Yeah, I think he's going
- 5:06Speaker 9: to be all right. He twisted his leg when he
- 5:09Speaker 9: went down, and he hit his head an awful lot.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 9: I'm keeping him with me for a couple of days,
- 5:15Speaker 9: just to keep an eye on him.
- 5:16Speaker 8: Yeah, that's good.
- 5:17Speaker 9: Wish you'd come out and talk to him, Matt.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Oh, very special reason.
- 5:22Speaker 9: And I'm afraid if you don't, this thing is going
- 5:24Speaker 9: to happen all over again.
- 5:26Speaker 8: How's that?
- 5:28Speaker 9: Well, this Homer isn't just an old fellow who wanders
- 5:31Speaker 9: around the town acting strange. No, no, he's perfectly sane.
- 5:35Speaker 9: And he's quite serious about what he's doing. Now, he
- 5:38Speaker 9: believes with everything.
- 5:40Speaker 5: That's in him that there's a lot of senseless killing
- 5:43Speaker 5: and violence in places like Dodge.
- 5:45Speaker 7: He's right about that.
- 5:46Speaker 9: Of course he is. Of course he is. But he's
- 5:49Speaker 9: bound and determined to wager one-man campaign about it. See,
- 5:53Speaker 9: he's going from town to town trying to put across
- 5:57Speaker 9: his idea wherever he goes.
- 5:59Speaker 7: You mean he wants everybody to give up their guns, huh?
- 6:02Speaker 9: That's it.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Not very likely, Doctor.
- 6:05Speaker 9: No, it isn't. But he's completely dedicated about it.
- 6:10Speaker 5: He's packing all of his worldly goods around with him.
- 6:12Speaker 9: He has quite a sack of gold and... He's planning
- 6:16Speaker 9: to spend the rest of his life trying to get
- 6:19Speaker 9: me to give up guns.
- 6:21Speaker 7: He's likely to get himself killed if he talks too
- 6:23Speaker 7: much in.
- 6:24Speaker 8: A place like that. You're probably right, though, Doc.
- 6:28Speaker 7: I'd better go have a talk with him, I guess.
- 6:31Speaker 9: Yeah, I'm heading for the barbershop, so I'll walk away
- 6:34Speaker 9: with you.
- 6:34Speaker 7: All right, let's go. You know, Doc, if you get
- 6:38Speaker 7: a haircut, nobody's going to know you. You're a fine one.
- 6:42Speaker 9: To talk to.
- 6:46Speaker 7: You been listening or just swilling on that whiskey?
- 6:49Speaker 8: I was listening when that Marshal's around.
- 6:52Speaker 7: Don't tell me what a man that is.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Yeah, like now.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Yeah, like now.
- 6:58Speaker 5: Lou, that old fella, that.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Homer, sounds kind of interesting.
- 7:05Speaker 5: You might want to get a little bit better acquainted sometime, huh?
- 7:10Speaker 8: That's what I was thinking, Harry.
- 7:13Speaker 5: All right, then, Lou. You just finish your drink, and
- 7:17Speaker 5: we'll think about it.
- 7:19Speaker 6: Mr.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Lately.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Oh, in here.
- 7:38Speaker 7: It's Matt Dillon. All right, if I come in? Oh,
- 7:42Speaker 7: come in, Marshal Dillon. Come in.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Sit down.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Sit down. Oh, thank you. Dr.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Adams has told me of your kindness in rescuing me
- 7:56Speaker 5: from those ruffians.
- 7:57Speaker 8: I want to thank you, sir. Oh, sure.
- 7:59Speaker 7: How are you feeling?
- 8:01Speaker 6: Oh, there's nothing wrong with me, Marshal Dillon.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Just a bump on the head. I should be on
- 8:07Speaker 5: my way. Doc usually knows what he's doing. You better
- 8:10Speaker 5: stay a while if he says so. I'd be ungrateful
- 8:13Speaker 5: if I didn't, sir. Oh, I'll stay until he releases me,
- 8:16Speaker 5: of course. Yeah, that's good. You know a place around here? Temporarily, Marshal, temporarily.
- 8:22Speaker 5: You know the old Miller place?
- 8:24Speaker 7: Oh, yeah, up north. It's been deserted.
- 8:26Speaker 8: That's right, sir.
- 8:28Speaker 5: I'm staying there till my work around Dodge City is completed.
- 8:32Speaker 8: Your work? My mission, Marshal Dillard.
- 8:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 8: I came to talk to you about that.
- 8:41Speaker 5: Oh?
- 8:42Speaker 9: I'd be glad to interest you in it, sir.
- 8:44Speaker 8: It's quite simple. Yeah. You want people to give up
- 8:48Speaker 8: their guns, is that it?
- 8:50Speaker 5: There's too much shooting and violence, Marshal Dillon. There are
- 8:53Speaker 5: too many guns.
- 8:54Speaker 8: You're right, Mr.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Lately.
- 8:55Speaker 7: There are.
- 8:56Speaker 8: You mean you'll help me?
- 8:58Speaker 7: No.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Huh? It just won't work. Guns don't work, Marshal Dillon.
- 9:05Speaker 5: I was there at the siege of Atlanta. All that
- 9:08Speaker 5: burning and the pillage.
- 9:10Speaker 8: Guns didn't do us any good then.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Maybe not.
- 9:13Speaker 8: There has to be a day when mankind.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Puts its guns aside and the world will end in violence,
- 9:19Speaker 5: destroyed by its own arms.
- 9:21Speaker 7: Now, that day may come, Mr.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Lely, but right now things are still raw and new
- 9:27Speaker 5: around here. Man has to be able to protect himself.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Shooting is no protection, Marshal Dillon.
- 9:34Speaker 7: It's too early to make him believe that and dodge.
- 9:37Speaker 9: I must continue to try.
- 9:39Speaker 8: Well, I'm asking you not to. But is there a
- 9:43Speaker 8: law against it, sir?
- 9:45Speaker 7: No, Mr.
- 9:46Speaker 8: Lately, there's no law. But you could get hurt again.
- 9:50Speaker 8: I'm fighting against violence, Marshal Dillon, but I'm not afraid. No,
- 9:55Speaker 8: I guess you're not. But I kind of wish you were.
- 9:59Speaker 7: No.
- 10:19Speaker 6: I can't even close his eyes when.
- 10:21Speaker 9: He's asleep while I'm here.
- 10:23Speaker 6: More over time like this anyway. Hey, Lou, look up there.
- 10:30Speaker 6: There's a man reading those houses.
- 10:34Speaker 9: How's that?
- 10:36Speaker 5: Why don't you tell my partner here you sure do
- 10:38Speaker 5: know how to handle that hammer?
- 10:40Speaker 6: Well, now, I don't know if there's too much to it.
- 10:43Speaker 7: Well, sure there is.
- 10:44Speaker 9: I've seen fellas never get the knack, ain't you?
- 10:47Speaker 7: Yeah, sure, honey.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Well, it ain't that he gets too much practice. Folks
- 10:52Speaker 6: don't steal the marshal's sign very regularly. I'm trying to
- 10:58Speaker 6: tear that down.
- 11:00Speaker 5: That looks like a good job.
- 11:02Speaker 8: Right nice job.
- 11:03Speaker 6: Well, I thank you kindly.
- 11:05Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll help you down.
- 11:07Speaker 9: Well, thank you, sir.
- 11:10Speaker 6: I declare it's nice to meet up with somebody who
- 11:12Speaker 6: appreciates a man's work.
- 11:14Speaker 8: I bet the Marshal appreciates your work.
- 11:17Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 11:18Speaker 9: Sometimes I ain't.
- 11:19Speaker 5: So sure of that at all.
- 11:21Speaker 7: Oh, you've got to know what's going on and all?
- 11:23Speaker 8: Oh, well, sure, I know what's going on. That's why
- 11:26Speaker 8: we come to you.
- 11:27Speaker 5: We thought maybe you could help us.
- 11:30Speaker 8: Well, I'd be proud to help.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Oh, that's mighty friendly of you.
- 11:34Speaker 8: I know.
- 11:34Speaker 6: If a man can't take time to be friendly, he
- 11:37Speaker 6: ain't worth much.
- 11:38Speaker 7: That's true.
- 11:39Speaker 9: And that's what we come to see you.
- 11:41Speaker 7: About is a friend of ours.
- 11:43Speaker 8: And we'd like to know where we could find him. Well,
- 11:46Speaker 8: I know most everybody in Dodge. What's his name?
- 11:50Speaker 7: Homer.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Yes.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Well, there's Homer Park.
- 11:55Speaker 6: But he's been dead for two years.
- 11:59Speaker 8: Then there's Homer Lately. Yeah.
- 12:01Speaker 7: That's the one.
- 12:03Speaker 6: Well, now, I'm afraid I got some bad news for
- 12:05Speaker 6: you there, too.
- 12:07Speaker 8: Homer ain't dead, is he?
- 12:09Speaker 7: No.
- 12:10Speaker 8: No, he ain't dead.
- 12:11Speaker 7: He's up at Doc's, though, for a couple days.
- 12:15Speaker 6: He was beat an awful bad head.
- 12:17Speaker 7: Oh, well, ain't that a shame.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Who'd want to do a thing like that, hurting a
- 12:22Speaker 6: poor old homeowner?
- 12:23Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 8: No, it was a terrible thing, all right.
- 12:26Speaker 6: You want to go on up to Doc's and pay
- 12:28Speaker 6: him a visit?
- 12:29Speaker 5: Well, uh, I'll tell you, I always figured it'd A
- 12:33Speaker 5: man ought to have some time.
- 12:34Speaker 8: To himself when he's bad hurt.
- 12:36Speaker 7: Yeah, to get strong with.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Yes, well, he'll be going home in.
- 12:40Speaker 7: A couple days.
- 12:41Speaker 8: That'd probably be better.
- 12:43Speaker 7: You know, for us to wait and see him out there.
- 12:45Speaker 8: It feels better.
- 12:46Speaker 7: What do you think? Well, that's what I think. Sure
- 12:49Speaker 7: it is.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:51Speaker 5: Only thing is, with us new here in Dodge, I
- 12:53Speaker 5: don't know where homeless place is.
- 12:55Speaker 8: Well, I mean, but this is me.
- 12:57Speaker 6: I can tell you that.
- 12:58Speaker 7: You can?
- 12:58Speaker 6: Yeah, it is out at the little bar place just
- 13:00Speaker 6: out of.
- 13:01Speaker 8: Town of P.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Oh?
- 13:02Speaker 7: You know how to get there?
- 13:04Speaker 8: Why, sure I do.
- 13:05Speaker 6: You head north about a mile to the first crossroad.
- 13:08Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 13:08Speaker 6: Then you head east down the creek. You can't miss it.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Well.
- 13:12Speaker 7: Well, that's fine. We sure do.
- 13:13Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 13:14Speaker 6: It wasn't nothing at all.
- 13:15Speaker 8: Oh, say, we'd like to ask you just one more thing.
- 13:19Speaker 9: What's that?
- 13:20Speaker 8: If you should run into our friend Homer, you know,
- 13:22Speaker 8: don't tell him. We're going to look him up.
- 13:24Speaker 7: We sort of want to surprise.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Him.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Now, that's kindly nice.
- 13:29Speaker 8: Of course, I won't tell him. Okay, then.
- 13:33Speaker 7: Thank you. Yeah, thank you.
- 13:35Speaker 6: That's all right. And I won't say a thing. I
- 13:40Speaker 6: couldn't really tell him nothing anyhow. I don't know what
- 13:43Speaker 6: your names are.
- 13:48Speaker 9: Hey, dear, you all right, Mr.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Petey?
- 13:58Speaker 7: How are you?
- 13:58Speaker 9: Ah, thank you, John. You all right, sir?
- 14:02Speaker 7: I wish I could buy you a better dinner for
- 14:03Speaker 7: your birthday, Kitty, but this is about all Dodge has
- 14:07Speaker 7: to offer. That's all right, Matthew.
- 14:09Speaker 9: I don't want my birthday remembered too well anyway.
- 14:13Speaker 7: Come on, Kitty.
- 14:13Speaker 8: It's not that bad.
- 14:15Speaker 6: It's that bad for a woman as soon as she
- 14:17Speaker 6: gets out.
- 14:17Speaker 7: Of her teens. I'm not a woman. Sure is.
- 14:22Speaker 9: How's the old fellow at the docks, Matt? He gone
- 14:24Speaker 9: home yet?
- 14:25Speaker 8: Yeah, he went home yesterday. Let's hope he stays here.
- 14:29Speaker 9: Poor old man.
- 14:30Speaker 8: He'll be all right. He just keeps from arguing with people.
- 14:34Speaker 9: Well, I guess if you believe in something like he does,
- 14:36Speaker 9: you can't keep quiet.
- 14:37Speaker 8: Yeah, maybe not.
- 14:40Speaker 9: He's right, you know.
- 14:41Speaker 7: Oh, I'm not kidding. I know, I know.
- 14:43Speaker 9: You can't take off your gun right now, but... But
- 14:46Speaker 9: he's got the right idea. It makes me sick, men
- 14:50Speaker 9: and their senseless gunfights.
- 14:52Speaker 8: Well, old man Lately has at least one follower.
- 14:55Speaker 9: Yeah, he certainly does. It's awful lonely when the Warriors
- 14:59Speaker 9: need to listen to you.
- 15:00Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess so.
- 15:02Speaker 9: Good, he has friends.
- 15:04Speaker 7: Friends? Mm-hmm.
- 15:05Speaker 8: I didn't think he knew anybody in Dodge.
- 15:08Speaker 9: Well, according to Chester, he does.
- 15:10Speaker 7: Oh? Yeah.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Chester said two men stopped.
- 15:13Speaker 9: And asked him all about Homer and how he was
- 15:16Speaker 9: getting along and where he was, where he lived.
- 15:19Speaker 8: And Chester told them? Well, sure.
- 15:20Speaker 6: They asked Chester not to say anything to old Homer
- 15:24Speaker 6: about it.
- 15:24Speaker 5: They were going to surprise him.
- 15:27Speaker 7: I think I better pay him a visit, too.
- 15:30Speaker 9: Any special reason?
- 15:32Speaker 5: I'm not sure, Kitty, but it could be Homer's friends.
- 15:35Speaker 8: Are making a surprise visit on his sack of gold.
- 15:39Speaker 9: Sack of gold?
- 15:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:40Speaker 8: And Homer insists on keeping it with him.
- 15:44Speaker 9: You're awful suspicious about people, aren't you? They could really
- 15:48Speaker 9: be friendly, you know.
- 15:49Speaker 8: Yeah, they could.
- 15:50Speaker 7: But I still think I'll go out and visit Homer.
- 15:53Speaker 4: THE END.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Mr.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Lately, you're home.
- 16:16Speaker 7: Who's there?
- 16:17Speaker 4: Matt Dillon.
- 16:17Speaker 7: Oh, I was just a minute, Marshal Dillon.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I'll unlock the door.
- 16:25Speaker 9: Oh, come in, come in.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Thank you. Ah.
- 16:35Speaker 7: Glad to get in and out of that rain.
- 16:37Speaker 8: Pull up that chair near the stove, Marshal Dillon. I
- 16:40Speaker 8: was just making some coffee.
- 16:41Speaker 7: Could I offer you something?
- 16:44Speaker 4: Oh, that'll be fine.
- 16:46Speaker 8: Oh, yes, it's good and hot.
- 16:48Speaker 7: The hotter, the better.
- 16:52Speaker 9: There you are.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Ah, thank you. Ah, that's fine. Thank you. You've got
- 17:02Speaker 7: quite a bolt on that door of yours. Just because
- 17:06Speaker 7: a man doesn't wear a gun, Marshal Dillon.
- 17:07Speaker 8: Doesn't mean that he's foolhard.
- 17:10Speaker 7: I'm glad to hear that. That's one thing I came
- 17:13Speaker 7: to see you about. The bolt on my door? No, Mr.
- 17:17Speaker 8: Lely. The gold you have with you.
- 17:21Speaker 7: You know about the gold. News like that gets around fast.
- 17:26Speaker 8: Oh, sure, Dylan. Are you suspicious of my gold? I
- 17:29Speaker 8: assure you it's mine.
- 17:30Speaker 4: No.
- 17:31Speaker 8: No, I... I just wonder if it's safe. I've always
- 17:36Speaker 8: been able to take care of it.
- 17:38Speaker 5: You're getting farther west all the time, Mr.
- 17:40Speaker 8: Lately.
- 17:41Speaker 7: Things are sometimes harder to control.
- 17:43Speaker 5: Especially if it's known that you don't carry a gun.
- 17:48Speaker 7: Have you ever thought about... Put near gold and the
- 17:52Speaker 7: vault at the back.
- 17:54Speaker 8: Oh, no, it won't be necessary.
- 17:57Speaker 7: I'll be glad to ride in with you when you
- 17:59Speaker 7: do take it in.
- 18:00Speaker 5: No, thank you, Marshal Dillon, but no.
- 18:04Speaker 7: A man has a right to keep his things with him.
- 18:06Speaker 8: I just want to be sure you keep it.
- 18:09Speaker 5: I know you mean well, Marshal Dillon.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Oh!
- 18:15Speaker 6: Do you have storms like this often in this part
- 18:17Speaker 6: of the country?
- 18:18Speaker 7: It gets this bad and worse.
- 18:21Speaker 6: Why don't you stay here the night?
- 18:23Speaker 7: Why, you can't go out in that.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Look there.
- 18:27Speaker 9: Why, you can't see ten feet in front of you.
- 18:30Speaker 7: Yeah, maybe you're right. Can I put up my horse
- 18:34Speaker 7: in the barn? Sure. There are bolts and.
- 18:38Speaker 9: Sacking to rub him down.
- 18:39Speaker 6: And then come back here.
- 18:41Speaker 7: You can bed down here for the night. Well, thanks, Mr. Lately.
- 18:44Speaker 7: I'll be back as soon as I take.
- 18:45Speaker 4: Care of my horse. You sure picked a fine night for.
- 18:57Speaker 9: Riding out here.
- 18:58Speaker 8: We're going.
- 19:04Speaker 7: Home and bed is the way we want it.
- 19:06Speaker 6: Well, we didn't need to stay so long on that saloon.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Before we got shot.
- 19:10Speaker 8: Oh, we did.
- 19:11Speaker 9: It gives the rain time to slack off.
- 19:14Speaker 7: Now, didn't it?
- 19:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess so.
- 19:17Speaker 7: And it gives old man time to get dead asleep.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Supposing he ain't?
- 19:23Speaker 7: Well, that don't matter much.
- 19:24Speaker 8: What do you mean?
- 19:27Speaker 5: I sure ain't going to start worrying about an old
- 19:29Speaker 5: man who don't even carry a gun.
- 19:32Speaker 7: No, well, shut up, man. Well, what are we going
- 19:35Speaker 7: to do? I ain't ready to tell you.
- 19:39Speaker 9: Just ride along.
- 19:41Speaker 7: Well, you don't have to tell me here. Ain't I
- 19:42Speaker 7: your boss?
- 19:43Speaker 6: I'll tell you when we get there.
- 19:45Speaker 7: Now, shut up. Open up, old man. Mr. Lely.
- 20:12Speaker 8: What was that?
- 20:15Speaker 6: Old man, throw the bull around.
- 20:18Speaker 7: You stay down, Mr.
- 20:18Speaker 8: Lely.
- 20:19Speaker 7: I'll take care of it. Did you take my gun?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Marshal, I.
- 20:24Speaker 9: I don't want any shooting.
- 20:25Speaker 8: There's shooting already.
- 20:26Speaker 7: You're in trouble. You better dig up that gun.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Oh, no, no, no.
- 20:28Speaker 9: I can handle it.
- 20:29Speaker 7: My gun, Mr. Lely. I'm not afraid. I'll talk to them. Now,
- 20:33Speaker 7: don't open that door.
- 20:42Speaker 8: Now.
- 20:44Speaker 7: They wouldn't even talk to me, Marshal. They didn't come
- 20:49Speaker 7: to talk.
- 20:50Speaker 9: I wouldn't have harmed them.
- 20:53Speaker 8: They'll take it easy, Mr. Lately.
- 20:55Speaker 4: They'll shoot you, too.
- 20:58Speaker 8: They're sure going to try.
- 20:59Speaker 6: I can't have that.
- 21:01Speaker 7: I can't be the cause of another man's death. Mr. Lately,
- 21:05Speaker 7: where's my gun? Your gun? Where is it? Just tell
- 21:08Speaker 7: me where.
- 21:09Speaker 9: Where's your gun?
- 21:09Speaker 7: Come on, quick, quick.
- 21:11Speaker 9: Back room. Over ten buckets.
- 21:14Speaker 8: Okay, sure.
- 21:22Speaker 7: Well, at least you didn't unload it.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Hey, Marshal.
- 21:36Speaker 7: Are you all right?
- 21:38Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm all right.
- 21:40Speaker 7: One of them rode off. I think I got the
- 21:42Speaker 7: other one.
- 21:44Speaker 8: You just lie easy while I check.
- 21:51Speaker 1: You shot one?
- 21:51Speaker 7: Yeah, Mr.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Lately, I shot one.
- 21:52Speaker 7: He's dead.
- 22:22Speaker 8: Oh, maybe, maybe you were right. How's that?
- 22:27Speaker 9: Maybe it is too soon for men to give up guns.
- 22:32Speaker 8: Well, tonight it is.
- 22:34Speaker 7: Someday, someday maybe. Yeah, Mr.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Lately, maybe someday men will be walking on the streets
- 22:40Speaker 5: of Dodge City without guns.
- 22:42Speaker 8: But I'm afraid I won't live to see it.
- 22:47Speaker 7: But somebody will, Mr. Lately. Don't forget that.
- 22:57Speaker 4: THE END.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Produced and directed by Norman McDonald, stars William Conrad as
