- 0:00Welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:02This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:05shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:09And I'm your host, Will Walden. Elon Musk's artificial
- 0:13intelligence startup XAI is set to establish a supercomputer
- 0:18facility at the former Electrolux site in Memphis, TN.
- 0:22This new gigafactory of compute will be among the largest AI
- 0:26supercomputers globally. Now, Memphis officials led by 10
- 0:30Townsend, president of the Greater Memphis Chamber, have
- 0:33been in discussions with Elon Musk and his team since March to
- 0:37bring this major investment to the city.
- 0:39The announcement was made during a press briefing where Townsend
- 0:43revealed that the factory could potentially become the largest
- 0:46multibillion dollar investment in Memphis's history.
- 0:50The city is considering offering tax breaks and other incentives
- 0:53to XAI. Those specific cost estimates
- 0:55and job creation numbers will be detailed in later dates.
- 1:00Now in May, Musk pitched the idea of his supercomputer to
- 1:03investors, describing it as essential for powering XA is
- 1:07chat bot croc. He outlined a goal for the
- 1:09supercomputer to be operational by next fall and mentioned a
- 1:12possible partnership with Oracle for its construction.
- 1:17This pitch was part of XA is successful $6 billion Series B
- 1:21fund round, which attracted significant investors such as
- 1:25Anderson Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, It's Saudi Arabia's
- 1:28public investment fund. Now the new AI project aims to
- 1:32leverage advanced technology and significant computing power to
- 1:35enhance artificial intelligence capabilities.
- 1:38Now Memphis was chosen for this groundbreaking project due to
- 1:41its strategic advantages and the proactive efforts of local
- 1:44officials to facilitate the development.
- 1:47And at a video press conference, Townsend emphasized that the
- 1:50project represents the city's largest capital investment by a
- 1:54new to market company, although he did not specify the exact
- 1:57location. But the former Electrolux
- 1:59facility at 3231 Paul Lowry Rd. is presumed to be the site.
- 2:05This facility was acquired by Phoenix Investors for $35
- 2:08million in December. Memphis Mayor Paul Young
- 2:12expressed enthusiasm for the project.
- 2:15He said the city's history of innovation and its readiness to
- 2:19embrace transformative initiatives underscores the
- 2:22city's commitment to supporting cutting edge technology and
- 2:25fostering economic growth. Now, Doug McGowan, president and
- 2:29CEO of Memphis Light, Gas and Water, assured that the utility
- 2:32company would meet XA is needs without jeopardizing the local
- 2:36power grid or water resources. The infrastructure is ready to
- 2:40support such a massive technological endeavor and the
- 2:44XAI project is still pending approval from county development
- 2:47authorities, the Tennessee Valley Authority and other
- 2:50regulatory bodies. And the swift coordination among
- 2:52various stakeholders has positioned Memphis favorably for
- 2:56this significant investment. Now, the Electrolux site,
- 3:00proximity to other state certified industrial properties
- 3:03and the TVA Allen Fossil Fuel Plant, which is undergoing
- 3:07redevelopment, add strategic value to the location.
- 3:10The area's infrastructure and state certification out of the
- 3:13Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Select
- 3:16Tennessee initiative, making an attractive site for corporate
- 3:20investment. Now.
- 3:21The former Electrolux plant closed in 2022 after being
- 3:24announced foreclosure in January of 2019.
- 3:28A strategic location near other industrial sites and also
- 3:31infrastructure is a key, including the TVA Allen Fossil
- 3:35Flio plant. Positioned as a prime candidate
- 3:37for this facility. The TVA Allen Fossil Plant
- 3:42redevelopment is expectorated to generate significant economic
- 3:46benefits for the region. The demolition of the plant,
- 3:48scheduled to be completed by 2025, and ongoing site
- 3:53remediation efforts show that the area is ready for new
- 3:56industrial developments in. The exact number of jobs and
- 3:59total capital investment an XAI supercomputer will bring to
- 4:03Memphis remains undetermined. However, the project scale
- 4:07indicates a substantial economic impact, potentially rivaling
- 4:11other major developments like Saint Jude Children's Research
- 4:14Hospital and also FedEx in the region.
- 4:18Now, the project's completion is anticipated later this year,
- 4:21pending necessary approvals. And this timeline shows that
- 4:25Elon is urgent and it's a high stakes game out there,
- 4:29developing one of the world's most advanced AI supercomputers.
- 4:33Now, a supercomputer like the one proposed for XAI is designed
- 4:36to process vast amounts of data and very high speeds, crucial
- 4:41for advanced AI applications. Tennessee already hosts the
- 4:44world's fastest supercomputer, known as Frontier at Oak Ridge
- 4:48National Laboratory, which cost $600 million and was built by
- 4:52Hewlett Packard Enterprise and AMD.
- 4:54With the addition of XAI supercomputer, Tennessee could
- 4:57become home to two of the world's most powerful
- 5:00supercomputing facilities. This development shows that the
- 5:04state's growing in prominence in a high performance computing and
- 5:07AI research. Now, XAI was founded by Elon in
- 5:11July of 2023, and they're going to push the boundaries of AI
- 5:14technology. According to Musk, Musk's
- 5:17involvement in the project, alongside his leadership roles
- 5:20at Tesla and SpaceX bring significant attention and
- 5:23credibility to this endeavor. Now Elon's addition to Twitter
- 5:29known as X Now and his focus on AI through XAI shows that he's
- 5:33getting more closely involved with the AI business.
- 5:37First Tesla with their AI, Now XAI and Grok and X or Twitter.
- 5:45It's a prioritized business strategy for Elon now.
- 5:49And the establishment of XAI supercomputer facility in
- 5:53Memphis is a significant milestone in AI tech and also
- 5:58for the economic development for the city.
- 6:00It'll bring in hundreds of jobs, maybe thousands of jobs.
- 6:02And also, the project's success will likely have far reaching
- 6:05impacts on local and also global technology, positioning Memphis
- 6:10as a key player in the AI revolution.
