Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Pairing Up For Clarity With KEVIN BORICH
Transcript
- 0:00Hi there, This is Kevin Borich. I'm here with Chris and I'm here
- 0:05with because of my new CD. I don't think you can see there on
- 0:08the radio. Used there's only half of me there all the other parts.
- 0:14Other people like schizophrenic album. I suppose you could call it anyway. Nice
- 0:21to be here, Thanks, thanks for joining this Lake Heaven. Always a
- 0:23pleasure speaking with you, my friend. Great, good to see you.
- 0:27Mate. So you're released your latest album, Gas a couple of weeks ago.
- 0:32Mate, So I know it hasn't been that long, but how's the
- 0:34earlier reception been. It's been out, you know, amazing. I mean
- 0:39it actually has charted two, which is something that that I haven't really had
- 0:44since nineteen seventy nine or something. And yeah, I've got to number one
- 0:50on their area blues charts or blues and jazz type charts, and so so
- 0:57yeah, that that was a great achievement, I guess. And words out
- 1:00and the reviews we're having and feedback from my social media and all that stuff
- 1:07is it's pretty amazing. And there's so many diverse sort of styles on the
- 1:12album. It s a schmagas board. I think I'll fuel for people to
- 1:19eat up, you know, and diggesting brains and will wonder how and how
- 1:23that happened. Yeah, it's just there's plenty of there's like, you know,
- 1:30there's a bit even a jazz like the song which is called Covered and
- 1:34Blue, I wrote about Amy Winehouse. Thought thought she was going off the
- 1:38rails, and you know, she left left with and just left us with
- 1:42blue. She took all her colors and died and so that's no good.
- 1:47But I heard what she left was. And then there's the heavy mental thing
- 1:52that about that's about the banks, you know how I have great distaste for
- 1:57the banking of the world. And i'd already I've done a song on Totum
- 2:02album and it was a really beautiful song, but it was the chain ganging
- 2:07because we were kind of the slaves to them, you know, And it
- 2:10had upright bass and I'm playing the National steel and all the nineing thit and
- 2:16then Doc Span was playing some licks and and a half and it was really
- 2:20like this, and that's okay. So that's what we listened. But then
- 2:23a year or two later, Westpack got busted for charging dead people or doing
- 2:30something disgusting, you know, and I just got really angry ill going to
- 2:38heavy metal version of that song and who am I going to get this?
- 2:42That the opening line light by light bulb moment at the moment like opening line,
- 2:47I'm angry mad, I'll get angry to do it. Wow, big
- 2:53flits. So then the chands in slightly different lyrics because they had been bustin
- 3:00had been know what rawal commission about who you know? Who was the naughty
- 3:04guy? No one seemed to get busted. And even in the middle of
- 3:08the round the guitar solo, there's there's a political guy that was on TV.
- 3:15I was on the radio ranting, I think as an ext labor guy,
- 3:21ranting about how the banks haven't been busted. So I recorded it and
- 3:25I've got that in the actual solo you could probably listening closely of him going
- 3:30chanting dead people stuff. That's quite quite quite a motive for those listening who
- 3:38haven't really got a clue while we're talking about Yeah, Melo you Actually it's
- 3:42a special album in the each song is written and performed alongside different music glicons
- 3:46such as Tim Rodgers as Leo Saya La Hooper, sees A Marchi and Mass
- 3:51Swenty and plenty more, mate, So where did the idea need to do
- 3:54that actually come from? It came from I had people, you know,
- 4:00like the Carlos had done one years ago and you know, so it's there
- 4:04they're sitting. But the songs that I've written on piano, I'm not a
- 4:09great piano player, but I like things pop out, you know, and
- 4:13the spiritual imagination and you keep chasing it. They were different songs that weren't
- 4:17conjuescive to the three piece to lineup that I've got, but but they needed
- 4:21to be done and with what would do them what the song asked for,
- 4:26you know, And that that brought to the fact that I've got some R
- 4:30and B songs here and I wanted a real soulful voice. So you know,
- 4:35the first guy I thought it was in my plus he plays great guitars,
- 4:40So you know, the song was kind of asking for stuff and that
- 4:45I couldn't give because I didn't have that. So the idea was to sort
- 4:49of team team them up and get people to help me really get the song
- 4:54to expect I'm you know, what was your selection in process, Like when
- 5:00you're looking for people to collaborate with, Like, did you write the song
- 5:02with some in particular in mine, and then asking or did you write the
- 5:05songs? And the songs were the songs and ideas. Some of them weren't
- 5:11finished, but they were little bits on my iPhone or something and they present
- 5:15themselves and then they're asking to be finished. And so it was. It
- 5:21was really organic. The where kind had happened was some they were just popping
- 5:27up and what I thought would suit worked, you know. So the songs
- 5:32had a lot to do with with it. You know, they weren't finished,
- 5:36but they were where they were into my pipeline, but not at the
- 5:41end, finishing end, at the beginning of the popular and the idea was
- 5:46to sort of identify and yeah that could be, yeah that could go with
- 5:51you know, sort of like that. So did you actually finish writing songs
- 5:57with each individual artist or did you I had the mostly finished except for the
- 6:03moment Leo Sayer, which is bring love what's called bring Loving Back, but
- 6:09I didn't have a title for it, and it was like, maybe you
- 6:12could help me, help me find a way. The chorus had the chorus,
- 6:14and Diverse had the chords and the structure, but I didn't want it
- 6:19to be the boy girl thing, because that's what it starts to be like.
- 6:23And I'm going, well, I've done about quite a few songs like
- 6:27to think of something bloody different. And I'm going, wow, well,
- 6:30who's who's faded away and hasn't And I went the peace Sign. It's it's
- 6:38been you know when I was in the sixties, you know, it was
- 6:43center stage, you know, peace you know. So I was treating the
- 6:47peace sign like the reason for it, and but I didn't have the title,
- 6:51and I was I'd had the chorus and I've played it too to Leo
- 6:59and he was in to do it, so and I said, mate,
- 7:00I've come up against the wall here. You know, I don't want it
- 7:04to be boy girl thinking. I told him about the peace side idea.
- 7:09So you know, he comes back a week later, going call it,
- 7:13I'm bring loving back moment, a nice things, some great lyrics, and
- 7:24we went down to his plus and I recorded on Nick hang with me and
- 7:28my producer and then all engineering and stuff. So yeah, just just worked
- 7:33out like that, and it was and all the songs, all the other
- 7:38songs I pretty much had done, you know, even the one with Joe
- 7:41Walsh. You know, they were finished as tracks of the sentin and we
- 7:46played guitar and sung because it's like tagged him and singing on most of them.
- 7:50You know, I do a line and the guest of the line and
- 7:54some whatever suited, you know, like Joe Hammond. Live it with Joe.
- 7:59He'd the second verse, which was nate great because of my sort of
- 8:03beginning of it, and then he takes it to another level, you know,
- 8:07So it was all different? What is it all different but the same?
- 8:13Isn't it a stupid thing to say? It is barely all run with
- 8:16it? You know? It all turned out to be an honest thing here
- 8:20with with your halfhead on it, only half my head. But I didn't
- 8:26want to be too good distical, you know, a good look at half
- 8:30you like why I cut it down the middle? The big question is,
- 8:39but like, did anyone knock you back? Like? Was anyone out there
- 8:43game enough to say no to the great Kevin Boris? Some are busy.
- 8:46I had a couple of busy. Two passed away. I can't can't blame
- 8:52him for that one. It was Doug Parkinson and Renee get Renee. So
- 9:01yeah, there was one or two. I think I only asked one other
- 9:05one was in the middle of doing an album or something. Yeah, two
- 9:09too too, were busy, okay, strike crate mate. It was it
- 9:16was a lot of work for you too, right, like several years to
- 9:18sort of complete it. So was there ever any stage where you thought that
- 9:22you'd bitten off more than you could choose, like maybe it was a little
- 9:24bit too ambitious. That part of it was nothing to do with the music.
- 9:28Was more about how when can we hook up and do it? And
- 9:33you know, of course we didn't get them all on line straight away.
- 9:37It was all like Joke and Larry and and Ross Wilson were the last two
- 9:41guys that I could find and and and get. So yeah, that was
- 9:50that was the pressure of of of it was you know, are we going
- 9:52to have any anyone and at all, you know as a role And it
- 9:58was Russell Horris was a good friend and he was care of you know,
- 10:03and once you got on side, and that was like and people started hearing
- 10:09the quality of it. I guess that all helped, you know, get
- 10:13get the barrel rolling. You know, I understand he had like there's a
- 10:18few different places he had records. It recorded in green rooms or some after
- 10:22games and he just did it in bedrooms loud rooms. Yeah. Yeah,
- 10:26I was great across across the internet and the season and March he did it.
- 10:31And she's doing the Baby Animals album and in a break she just had
- 10:37a backing track that would scent and she gave it to the engineers. Can
- 10:41I do it there? You know? So? And then of course I
- 10:43and Moss was stranded and nooser because I think that was the lockdowns, and
- 10:50and he was getting pretty bored, I think, so we are asked him
- 10:54in a perfect time. So he just drove down here to my studio and
- 10:58this place I'm sitting right now and got downstairs and then he's singing and it
- 11:03was amazing. Wow. Of course it wasn't just singers on the album too,
- 11:09like you say, like you've also got Joe Walsh, Andy and must
- 11:11contribute guitars and Jay kam Leary pops up on sacks Russell walls. So was
- 11:16there any guidelines of rules for those guys playing the instruments? So did they
- 11:20just come in and lay down what they wanted? No? You know,
- 11:22people of that cab you respect, You're not gonna you know, you know,
- 11:30they hear it and and they've they've got the talent to morph their idea
- 11:37into it, which is enhancing. You know, there was no one doing
- 11:41something that wouldn't be acceptable. You know, you'll go free reign because they
- 11:48are that talented, you know. We The only thing was that I changed
- 11:56one song and it was nixt suggestion that was some one with Ela Hooper was
- 12:01I had already called it it on a live album I did. It's called
- 12:07I'm Together, and it was like a shuffle, a blue shuffle, but
- 12:13it wasn't a kind of an up tempo blue shuffle. And and he saw,
- 12:16why don't you try doing it trad jazz, So we did and with
- 12:20her voice it really suits. It just made probably where the song should have
- 12:26been originally. You know, that was the only one that was already written.
- 12:31The other one we're all pretty knew in the bag. Yeah, So
- 12:37now the album's out, made it and the works done. Like looking back
- 12:39on it, the satisfied with what do you achieved? Yeah, I'm surprised.
- 12:45I'm really surprised at how great it is really because and it's and it's
- 12:48because the way the people have really injected their talents into it, into it
- 12:54really that's that's what some serviced those songs to their max. I don't think
- 13:00we could have done any better than what it is. So when you've you
- 13:03know, even when you're you're sitting now and and listen to it, you
- 13:09know, a lot of things I've done in the past I would I would
- 13:13want to do again sometimes, but not this one. It's got the big
- 13:18stamp of approval, the official Tenmith stamp of approval. That's it pretty hard
- 13:26approval, mate. Sometimes is it something that you do again later or is
- 13:31that sort of just something now you've done and you're gonna put it on the
- 13:33shelf And I think we'll just leave it at that for the time being.
- 13:37We don't want to think ahead too far, sort of like to put the
- 13:43politics saying only the three years of thinking and then they just want to get
- 13:46back in. So, yeah, you know, it was it was a
- 13:56real challenge, but boy, it's just turned out so great and the reaction
- 14:00that we're getting on on the social media and stuff, because I'm I'm having
- 14:03to really get stuck into that, which I'm not that good at it,
- 14:07but I'm getting help. So it's amazing what people are saying about it and
- 14:13the different reasons that they are enjoying it and the way they describe it.
- 14:18It's pretty touching really because it's an emotional thing because they are all my children,
- 14:24these songs that area and to see people get that much out of them
- 14:31as the reward. You know, I did Chris and John play on this
- 14:35album too, or they cast aside for other Yeah? Yeah, there they
- 14:39are on about five tracks. My son's playing on our four, yeah,
- 14:45so, but they're on the rest. I think he's on four or five.
- 14:48He had to do the jazzy one brushes. He's the brush and got
- 14:54the uprade boat. So it's real cool man. You know. They are
- 14:56probably two of the two of the coolest cats we come across in the music
- 15:01industry, those two. Yeah. Yeah, they are fantastic and they're great,
- 15:05great human things and really helpful for me. You know. They both
- 15:09can drive. I've had drums that don't drive, and they both drive,
- 15:15and they willing to help and the loadins and all that stuff that we still
- 15:18do because you know, going on the days of the six ton truck,
- 15:22of the four roads that I had. It's just the music scene has suffered,
- 15:28you know, due to the apathy from the government, I reckon because
- 15:31they just make it harder and harder for venues, and the poker machines didn't
- 15:37help, and over time it just suffered. But we're right fighting back.
- 15:43Good guys. Can't get the good guys down. Yeah, the drummers that
- 15:46can drive me. And how's this for a story for you? Like I
- 15:48looked after a band from the States a couple of weeks ago, and their
- 15:50drummer came out. I didn't bring anything with him, or didn't even bring
- 15:54his own drum six have we got the sound check for the first show and
- 15:58he's got to sit up there and played. And I had to go scrounging
- 16:00through the band room and like looking under couches and ship looking for a set
- 16:03of old drumsticks. So here's somebody sound check with the kidding, Well,
- 16:07where was the kid? What was he hitting? I think we hired a
- 16:11kick for him but didn't bring any hardware, which is fair enough. He
- 16:15is from overseas, but didn't ever bring his own drumsticks. It's like seen
- 16:18all the drummers, but he took the cake. That one line drummers they
- 16:25just turn up with the sticks. But yeah, when it's when it's back
- 16:27line hide and stuff, so that that's cool. You know you look mini
- 16:33skirt made. That's so I'll say, yeah, there was a bit expectant
- 16:37when wants everything it made me should have came nude and then I would have
- 16:44left, So I would have been trade off one for the other. You've
- 16:49just recently finished up a toore mate promoting this album, But have you got
- 16:53anything else planned? Like, I know you're you're a prolific live player,
- 16:56mean, so what what are you going around the corner? Well, I'm
- 17:00you know, there's there's the songs that make it or weren't suited for that,
- 17:03But I'm just going to keep keep doing when keep my door open,
- 17:08the doors open for songs, and we've we've got some basic ones down already
- 17:18and we're just gonna we're taking a break and doing what you have to do
- 17:22to promote this one, and we'll get back into the slot again and hopefully
- 17:26come up with with an album. You know, you chasing chase something new
- 17:33and something that. So that's what that's what the doors opened. You know,
- 17:40here's a question I don't pull out very often made It's only very few
- 17:42people I asked this too, But you definitely definitely qualified it being able to
- 17:47answer this I made so You've had a great history in music, which is
- 17:49pretty understatingly obvious. But one day when you did give it up, man
- 17:52like, what do you hope to leave as your musical legacy. Well,
- 17:57it's similar to what's happened with the album, would be fantastic. And people
- 18:02who have enjoyed my stuff. A lot of people come up to me and
- 18:07say, well, I started playing guitar because if I came to see you
- 18:11at a show, or I have people my age bring along their their teenage
- 18:17or you know, twenty year old son or daughter and they are enjoying the
- 18:22music. You know, I think the music will will will sort of bigger
- 18:26legacy. And the fact that I did it up until my late years and
- 18:33still able to perform and do it shouldn't mean something to somebody, but it's
- 18:38meaning a lot to me because I'm still able to do it. I mean,
- 18:42you know, a human is not going to last forever, and you
- 18:45know it's all it's all on the hill from physically and until we turn to
- 18:51dust. You know, I'm you know, I've got to still the blue
- 18:57lift. You know, if you got any many local gigs coming up right,
- 19:03I'm living just around the corner from me. An now I'm at our
- 19:04Red Cliffs. So you got anything up really think coming up round this way?
- 19:07So well, it's down in New South Wales. It's in September,
- 19:14September. I don't know what the data is. It's up the RSL and
- 19:18it's for the blues club down there. So it's on September on a Sunday.
- 19:23I can't remember what something got in front of me. I should have
- 19:26it, but sorry about that, but it told me on my website right
- 19:32check it out. But I'll come on anyway next time, yea in the
- 19:33general facility, I'll pop along and yeah, we will be sort of you
- 19:38know. I went to Melbourne and it was really cold down there, so
- 19:42and I was you know, I remember I remember outloading once in a winter
- 19:47and I'm swater myself. I'm never coming down again in winter and narrow.
- 19:51I was down in Malbot winter. It was because the album got put back.
- 19:56We're waiting to be able to get more people and it just got pulled
- 19:59back the to so yeah, it was very cold and you know, people,
- 20:03I don't particularly want to go out when it's really cold. Winge and
- 20:08winds and wings when it's cold, put the wine muff on, you know,
- 20:18Well, thanks very much for your time. Been a pleasure as usual.
- 20:22Album of Duets is out now at all good outlets and online on all
- 20:26the socials, I believe. And firstly when I say she's an absolute pearl
- 20:30of an album, making gratulations and oh yeah, I've got to mention too
- 20:33that see this this this version here, which was a twelve page booklet,
- 20:37was like forty nine dollars. But we've just got a new twenty dollars version
- 20:41coming out, which is just it opens out. It's much more affordable for
- 20:45folks. So twenty dollars. And you can go to my website and there's
- 20:48a pre sales going on right now and they will be delivered in any any

- 21:03because I put the link up with the article when I when I publish it,
- 21:06and see if we can push you for the traffic. Your away,
- 21:08All right, fantastic moment. All right, then we're good to talk.
- 21:11You make good to see you smile and face again. Brother. Good on
- 21:14you, Chris, and I'll catch up with you hopefully soon. Thanks very
- 21:18much for your help, buddy. Thank Bro. Bye,
