- 0:00Oh, well, I thought you'd be pleased.
- 0:01I might have guessed your favorite planet.
- 0:03How do you know that? Oh, everybody knows that.
- 0:05Tell everybody that. I can't think why for the life
- 0:08of you. Well, you'll like it.
- 0:09It's pretty civilised on the whole oxygen level.
- 0:11Good. Slight acrid precipitation.
- 0:14You mean it's raining? So it would appear.
- 0:17Oh, well, that's what the locals call a soft day.
- 0:20Oh, really? Anyone for tennis?
- 0:23Tennis. Yes.
- 0:24It's an English expression. It means is anyone coming
- 0:26outdoors to get soaked? Master.
- 0:30God duty for you, canine. We don't know if the natives are
- 0:33friendly yet. Master.
- 0:35Canine What is tennis? Real lawn or table mistress?
- 0:40Never mind, forget it. Forget you raise memory banks
- 0:46concerning tennis. Memory erased.
- 1:24Hamster with a dump pen knife will do it.
- 1:25Quicker, quicker, quicker. Welcome back to a Hamster with a
- 1:29Blunt Pen Knife, the Doctor Who Commentary Podcast.
- 1:33I am here today. Well, actually before I even
- 1:36announce, I think I should say thank you to my guest today, Mr.
- 1:41Glenn Fitzgerald, for all of your support, all of your lovely
- 1:45comments. I don't know how long you've
- 1:47been following Hamster, but I've been aware of your comments for
- 1:50some time now. How long have you been listening
- 1:53to this thing? That'll be two years now.
- 1:57All right then. Well, coming up for two years.
- 2:00Bless you. I thought you had a slightly
- 2:02sarcosic look in your eye. Is that exposure to hamster
- 2:05that's done that to you? Well, it has been mentioned
- 2:08before, yeah. Glenn, how are you today?
- 2:13I'm very well, thank you. How are you?
- 2:16Well, as I said, I've been napping all morning so I'm full
- 2:18of beans and. We're about to.
- 2:20Watch a really great Doctor Who story.
- 2:23So we are. What are we talking about
- 2:25tonight? We're going to talk about one of
- 2:27my favourites, if not my favorite, the Stones of Blood.
- 2:32Of all time, your favorite of all time?
- 2:35Yeah, I mean it. My favorite does vary
- 2:38occasionally, but it always seems to come back to the stones
- 2:41of blood. Yeah.
- 2:43Well, that seems like a fair question to ask you to start off
- 2:45with then. So what would be battling for
- 2:48the top spot with the Stones of Blood?
- 2:52Well, without embarrassing yourself, it's going to be
- 2:57Lagopolis. OK, no, no.
- 3:00I spoke to someone recently. That's their favorite story.
- 3:03Right Day of the Daleks. Banger.
- 3:10Enlightenment, which I know is a bit probably frowned upon from
- 3:16various places but has always been one of my favourites.
- 3:20I'm definitely in the sort of 70s, early 80s.
- 3:25Is that where you came into fandom?
- 3:28Well, I was born in the early 70s.
- 3:33I don't think I've really become a fan until probably 1990s
- 3:39around there when I left school. So but it was it was something
- 3:44that was always on in our house. It's definitely everybody shut
- 3:47up, sit down and watch Doctor Who.
- 3:50I'm sorry to make this an interrogation already, but so
- 3:53with you. Your fandom hit in the 90s?
- 3:55Was it buying VHS then? I well, my my fandom came about
- 4:03simply because of a clip on Blue Peter and a picture in ATV
- 4:08rental window. Because there was a clip on Blue
- 4:12Peter when I come home from school, I think it was, and they
- 4:16were selling off a load of Doctor Who props.
- 4:19And I, I only caught the tail end of it.
- 4:22And I said to me mate, the next day at school, what was all that
- 4:25about on Blue Peter last night? And he said, oh, they're selling
- 4:29off all that rubbish from Doctor Who because it's finished.
- 4:32And I was just like, oh, what what are you talking about?
- 4:36It's finished. He went, yeah, it's all been
- 4:37cancelled. It's all done and gone.
- 4:41And I thought, no, I'm not having that.
- 4:43So I've tried to cling on to it as much as I could.
- 4:47If you'd have got hold of some of those props, Glenn, you could
- 4:49have. That could be your pension
- 4:51although. Yeah.
- 4:53Everybody, I'm here to tell you right now I'm looking at a cyber
- 4:57helmet, and that's not a euphemism and a vengeance on
- 5:02Varos original. Is that the one that Owen teals
- 5:05wearing? Maldak is it that one?
- 5:07I believe so, yeah. Oh.
- 5:08God, Owen Teals. I don't know how to say this
- 5:12without sounding rude, but Owen Till's head has been inside that
- 5:15thing. How exciting.
- 5:18I should have worn it. Well, yes.
- 5:22It would have been a bit odd though during the Stones of
- 5:24Blood commentary. Dressed up in cosplay for
- 5:26Avengers of Virus, right? Well, how stranger things have
- 5:30happened in this house. So did you devour all of it then
- 5:34as it was coming out all the VHSS?
- 5:37Yeah, well, my first thing I ever bought was the Peter Hain
- 5:45in 25 Glorious years. Is it?
- 5:47Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:48Which? I know is a bit frowned upon
- 5:50these days, but I absolutely devoured that book.
- 5:55I must have read it cover to cover so many times it's full.
- 5:59Of information full of the bank history of Doctor Who.
- 6:03And it's got in the back, it's got all the listing of the
- 6:06episodes and up to a point. And, and to me, that was that
- 6:10was, that was my Internet back then.
- 6:13That was my source of information.
- 6:16I think my first VHS was I believe the Five Doctors.
- 6:23So many people say. This.
- 6:25Yeah, because I I don't think there was that many around.
- 6:28Sorry, my chair squeaking. I don't think there was that
- 6:32many around then and I think the five doctors was the way of
- 6:35getting, oh, like a lot of the doctors on one tape.
- 6:40I mean, please don't apologise about squeaky shares, you know,
- 6:43have you not heard the noises that are put out on this
- 6:45podcast? I have indeed have.
- 6:48You heard Fraser Gregory's opinions.
- 6:49I mean, I'll put out some pretty unusual noises.
- 6:52I didn't think it'd be long before his name was mentioned.
- 6:56The beast, honestly. Oh, he said good luck today as
- 6:59well and sending his love. Thank you very much.
- 7:04Well, look, OK, so the Five Doctors have really, you know,
- 7:06the fact that, you know, you can't afford a second mortgage
- 7:09because you spent so much money on Doctor Who to is frankly down
- 7:13to Terrence Dixon. Yeah.
- 7:15And the Five Doctors A. 100% yeah, it's.
- 7:19Great though, isn't it? It's a great.
- 7:20Story. It's one of them, one of them
- 7:22VHS's that got worn out. I've still got it.
- 7:26I've still got all my VHS's. Glenn, do you remember tracking
- 7:29on VHS's? You know when you've got fuzzy
- 7:31lines? Oh my God, I'd watch certain
- 7:35scenes over and over again and my mum would be like, now I know
- 7:37which bits you're watching, all the violent bits, because that
- 7:40was all the bits where all the tracking went bad.
- 7:43Kids don't know they're born these days, do they?
- 7:45They don't. They don't know how easy they've
- 7:47got it now. I mean, what would you have
- 7:49done? Please tell me what your
- 7:51reaction would have been if I got went up to you age, let's
- 7:54say 14. They said.
- 7:55Hello Glenn, I'm from the future, I've bought AAPC from
- 8:00the future and on it is the BBC iPlayer and the entire library
- 8:03of Doctor Who. There you go, you have that.
- 8:07I don't know. It's it's incomprehensible and
- 8:10it's you can't believe it. Yeah, I can sit and watch Doctor
- 8:14Who on my phone at work, at tea break.
- 8:17But in on on a flip side of that coin, does that take a bit of
- 8:21the excitement out of it? A little bit I think that you
- 8:25can. Because you can binge it now, I
- 8:27think there there's less of an attachment to it.
- 8:30We built up our collection so slowly, didn't we?
- 8:33And so passionately. Nowadays you can just have it
- 8:36all at the push of a button. See, you don't have to strive
- 8:39for it, you know? Exactly.
- 8:41It was, it was exciting waiting for that next release to come
- 8:45out or wondering what it was getting on the train going to
- 8:48the shop. Those VHSS all came out in weird
- 8:51orders. In there you had a different
- 8:53doctor each month. Yeah, yeah, they were very
- 8:56biased sometimes as well, I felt.
- 8:59Towards who? So, yeah, there didn't seem to
- 9:02be much of the early start, earlier stuff or or the later
- 9:06stuff. It was very sort of migraines,
- 9:09Yeah, very suddenly. I mean, I understand that from a
- 9:12marketing point of view, but as a Doctor Who fan, I wanted those
- 9:16black and whites so badly. Yeah, yeah, I think the first
- 9:20black and whites I've got was the the two case set of the
- 9:25Daleks and I bought that from the museum and moving image from
- 9:29their Doctor Who exhibition. I was so chuffed with that,
- 9:32Yeah. Did you go and see the giant
- 9:35robot at the moment? I did.
- 9:38Did you say Haycock like Tom Baker?
- 9:40Did. Yeah, God, that was a fabulous
- 9:45exhibit, wasn't it? It was that was, that was a
- 9:48really good one, that was. I remember being particularly
- 9:51obsessed with the the Morlocks creature, which probably says a
- 9:56lot about the future of my life. Really.
- 9:58You know, like it was. Yeah, I think I was obsessed by
- 10:04the Dalek that was that was knackered, that is in two
- 10:07halves. I think it was an old blue and
- 10:10silver one, wouldn't it? If I recall?
- 10:13And little did you know, in the future, you'd be sitting in a
- 10:16room with actual props behind you.
- 10:19There, yeah, I mean. Glen, you probably thought at
- 10:22some point you was going to grow up, Ryan, become an adult, but
- 10:25clearly this has not happened like with me.
- 10:28No, no, and I don't want it to happen either if I'm honest.
- 10:31Are we a similar sort of age? I'm 45, are we around about the
- 10:35same sort of age? Yeah, I'm going to be 51 in a
- 10:38few weeks. Oh, you're looking great on it,
- 10:40but well, thank. You very much.
- 10:42I think it's a bit too late for us to grow up now, if I'm
- 10:45honest, like. No point is there.
- 10:48We could be talking about something really sophisticated
- 10:50today, like what's sophisticated like azimuth or something like
- 10:54that, you know, but. Instead.
- 10:55Oh no. Instead, we're going to watch
- 10:57Amelia Rumford running away from stones on casters.
- 11:02Exactly. What about season 16?
- 11:08Now you've shared the story, what about season 16, the Key to
- 11:11Time? What do you think of it?
- 11:14Well, on the Hull, but I'm honest, it's not one of my
- 11:19favourites because there's there's a couple of stories in
- 11:26there that just don't really do anything for me but Stones of
- 11:30Blood. We could be falling out any
- 11:32minute, you and me. Which stories name?
- 11:34Them I'm going to have to say the Armageddon factor.
- 11:40Oh. Well, I mean, I can understand.
- 11:42It's very long, isn't it? Yeah.
- 11:45Yeah, it's it's never been one of my favourites and I've never
- 11:49been a fan of the ribos or ribos.
- 11:52I know, I know. So I'm getting a coat.
- 11:56No, you're right. All bizarre opinions are welcome
- 11:59here. I'll refer you again to Fraser
- 12:03Gregory. Yeah, it's ironic, though,
- 12:06because Mary Tan is probably my favorite companion.
- 12:11Of all. I think she.
- 12:14Hang on. No, hang on.
- 12:15Is it because she's a stunning actress or?
- 12:19Because she's. A stunning looker.
- 12:22Might have sort of 80% do with it what the?
- 12:26Latter or the former? OK.
- 12:31Great actress. Great looker, yeah.
- 12:34Yeah, but she's she's, she's, it's like she's on par with the
- 12:39doctor with her intelligence. And you know it it.
- 12:43It was a nice change to have that.
- 12:46I mean, did you see her? I mean, I was watching this the
- 12:49other day and she's in that sort of purpley Reddy costume with
- 12:53all of her hair out at the end of this.
- 12:55I was like, I mean, have we ever had a more Audrey Hepburn like
- 12:58companion? She's like a movie star in the
- 13:00middle of this cheap old show. She is, it's, it's, it's
- 13:05definitely got the Hollywood look about her.
- 13:09Yeah, I mean, I'm going to say this to you, Glenna.
- 13:11I think you've been quite a get, you know, as a, I'm assuming,
- 13:15heterosexual man. You've been all right for our
- 13:18Doctor Who. OK, You've been quite lucky with
- 13:20very pretty ladies, where for me it's slim tickets.
- 13:24OK. No wonder you love Classico so
- 13:30much. I hadn't actually thought of it
- 13:34like that. Oh, sorry.
- 13:35Welcome to Hamster. Yeah, they always used to say
- 13:39for the dads, didn't they? Like yes, Bryan, unfortunately.
- 13:45We're old enough to be dads now, so.
- 13:47Yeah. Yeah, well, look, should we go
- 13:50in and watch episode 1 of this and we'll explore what you love
- 13:54about this story in this season that you don't love so much?
- 14:01Very well, yeah. Well, how about you count us in?
- 14:04Right, let's I'm all I'm all queued up and not clued up.
- 14:10That, well, I'm not queued up or clued up, I'm afraid.
- 14:13So. You have to bear with.
- 14:16Me. Are we ready?
- 14:19Oh. I'm ready.
- 14:21In 321 play. Off we go.
- 14:27Now come on now, this time tunnel.
- 14:29This must. You must love this.
- 14:31This, this is the iconic opening for me.
- 14:37This is my childhood. What does it?
- 14:40What does it mean to you then, that opening the promise of
- 14:43adventure? It means promise of adventure,
- 14:46it means a cosy Saturday night in with with Mum making the tea
- 14:53and oh it's lovely. Good old days.
- 14:57Hang on a minute, what sort of tea did she make?
- 14:59Yeah. On a Saturday we will.
- 15:02Saturday afternoons we used to go down, down into town and
- 15:06she'd buy iced buns and I can't believe this.
- 15:12I had ice buns yesterday for the first time in years.
- 15:15They were on reduction in in Waitrose.
- 15:17I thought, God, I've had a nice finger for ages.
- 15:20That'll be done now. Here is gorgeous Marytown and
- 15:25Tom Baker. Let's talk about Tom.
- 15:29Yeah, this is this is possibly he's really settled in here and
- 15:34he he's and you can tell he's actually loving this.
- 15:40It's it's after probably another season, then he starts getting.
- 15:47Itchy feet. Yeah, I'm not.
- 15:49I don't want to say fed up with it, but you can tell a bit long
- 15:53in the tooth do. You think there's a finite
- 15:56amount of time then that somebody should play the role?
- 15:59Like maybe 3 or 4 years. Yeah, I think so.
- 16:06But I think if they're a favorite, you also don't want
- 16:09them to go, do you? So I was devastated when Tom
- 16:13left. Oh, you said Lacopolis was one
- 16:15of your favourites, didn't you? Yeah.
- 16:19Oh, I. I can only imagine what you was
- 16:20going for. Rosie was at the top of that
- 16:22tower. Oh, I mean, I mean how old would
- 16:26I have been? 8 something like that.
- 16:29I literally remember getting up and standing in front of the TV
- 16:33watching that no. Oh my God, almost as if you
- 16:37could just no stay, you know, trying to grab hold of him.
- 16:41I must have been in everybody's way, but I was there.
- 16:44Did you learn to love Peter Davidson eventually?
- 16:47Yeah, probably, probably about two or three episodes in the
- 16:51cast of Valve. You're that fickle, are you?
- 16:54How did you took two episodes? Now I can't help but notice
- 16:59blood is being poured over. We don't see blood a lot in
- 17:03Doctor. Who We don't No, this is this is
- 17:07probably where my lifelong love of horror started.
- 17:12I reckon we've got really. You big horror fan.
- 17:15Yeah, massive horror fan all. Right, I'm going to pop quiz you
- 17:21now then. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:23Well, sure, top 3 horror movies, but they can't all be from the
- 17:28same franchise. They got to be from different
- 17:29places. Let's get a taste of the horror
- 17:32that you like. Well, my top three would be The
- 17:36Conjuring. OK.
- 17:39Hell Raiser. Pin it right.
- 17:42Pin it. Yeah, and probably insidious.
- 17:52Oh yes. I also I really like Mike
- 17:55Flanagan's stuff as well, like the series, you know, like
- 18:00Haunting of Hill House and things like I like scary stuff
- 18:03as opposed to slasher gory stuff.
- 18:06I was expecting, I don't know why I was expecting you to say a
- 18:09lot of older stuff. There was quite a lot of modern
- 18:12stuff that you. Mentioned yeah, you was probably
- 18:14expecting like Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th and.
- 18:19I mean, I I love both of those franchises.
- 18:21Yeah, yeah, I do. Yeah.
- 18:23But I, I think they're more sort of slashes.
- 18:26I'm more into scary horror. I like them.
- 18:31Sorry. I like, I like sort of a low
- 18:36budget British horror that not a lot of people have heard of.
- 18:39I find them more atmospheric, more scary.
- 18:43So like Doctor Who then where they have to build atmosphere
- 18:47without a lot of money? Yes, storytelling.
- 18:50I was going to, I saw my next question there was going to be,
- 18:53well, how does that sort of seek into Doctor Who?
- 18:55But I suppose Doctor Who did that all the time, didn't it?
- 18:58Great horror with frappence. Exactly where where you haven't
- 19:03got the money you you sort of try and tell it through a story
- 19:08or through creepy bit of music and atmosphere.
- 19:13And I think the 70s was good at that.
- 19:16Assuming you like that bit later on in this story, then, where
- 19:19those two are in 10 touching. Oh, you stand in the middle of
- 19:23the night? Yeah, that's that's that's
- 19:26something that scarred me for life.
- 19:28I think that's one I've never. Forgotten.
- 19:30How would you have been when you saw that?
- 19:34What year is this? 78 end of 78 and it's so odd
- 19:39have been coming up for five. Wow, actually that is going to
- 19:43burn itself in your mind. Yeah, I mean, my, my very
- 19:47earliest memory of Doctor Who is only snippets here and there,
- 19:53but he's Morbius, his brain in the jar.
- 19:55Oh. Boy, yes.
- 19:58I've never forgotten that. I've never forgotten the fear.
- 20:01I I remember hanging on to me mum's neck just watching this
- 20:06brain in a jar talking. Do you know what mine is?
- 20:09My very earliest memory of Doctor Who?
- 20:11Well, it's twofold, actually. It's Sarah Jane running through
- 20:14the mist in Death to the Daleks from that very early VHS 'cause
- 20:19I just thought, you know, you could see all those hands sort
- 20:21of coming. Yeah, in the side of on the
- 20:24rocks. And I just, I thought, my God,
- 20:26something's in that mist that's going to get a terror.
- 20:28But the other thing was all that blood down the arm of Nurse
- 20:32Lamont from Terror of the Zygons.
- 20:36Yes, yeah. Jesus.
- 20:38Terrifying. Almost, yeah.
- 20:41I hugged knees instead of necks. I was there hugging my mother's
- 20:45knees. Like, you know, yeah, we've all
- 20:49done it, haven't we? Oh, boy.
- 20:51Yes. Yeah.
- 20:52Well, I mean, I lost my mother five years ago, and I'll still
- 20:54miss her. Do you know what this story,
- 20:56Stones of Blood? Yeah.
- 20:58Because she. There came a point in my
- 21:00childhood where she just got so fed up with hearing the Doctor
- 21:03Who theme tune. I think she started to resent
- 21:05Doctor Who in my life at one point where she was just like, I
- 21:07can't listen to that music anymore because I'd just play it
- 21:10on a loop. I'm sure you did as well.
- 21:13She came home and she goes to me.
- 21:15I just really want to watch a Doctor Who today.
- 21:16Put one on and we'll watch it together.
- 21:18And I chose this and she had the best time with it.
- 21:22It's good. I think this would be a story if
- 21:25so, if you was to introduce Doctor Who to a friend who knew
- 21:30nothing about it or thought it was a bit silly.
- 21:33If you showed them this, I don't think I'd be embarrassed to
- 21:37watch it with them, whereas other stories I'd be a bit.
- 21:41I don't think it's aged too badly, has it?
- 21:43Because they do the the videotape on location and the
- 21:47videotape in the studio. And I know that was a deliberate
- 21:49choice. Although I do like film work in
- 21:52Doctor Who. You know, that sort of lovely
- 21:54fuzzy film work in the 70s. Yeah, you can tell this is
- 21:59video, can't. I mean, I wouldn't, I'm not one
- 22:02for for rivet counting as they say and things like that.
- 22:05But you can definitely tell it's all video.
- 22:09The picture quality difference. Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:13It's it's, it just adds to the atmosphere for me.
- 22:16Glen, what on earth are those enormous footprints in the
- 22:20English sun? Is it a baying Hound of the
- 22:23Baskervilles? Or the mound of the Hound of the
- 22:27Baskervilles. I mean, come on, walking stones
- 22:33that go around sucking people's blood, it's just great.
- 22:37Brilliant. TV show would do it.
- 22:45I mean, many probably would try it, but they wouldn't get away
- 22:48with it, I don't think. I know, I know, you can hear the
- 22:52incidental music that's playing right now because it's so good,
- 22:55isn't it? The music in this.
- 22:58It always, always draws you in. It's it's the way like, like
- 23:04like I said earlier about Mary Tam, she's got such authority
- 23:08with Tom there strutting around his and she's following him
- 23:14around behind, but she she's comes across so intelligent.
- 23:17Don't. You love her in Android Tara.
- 23:20Where she goes, Well, I'm going to go and do it myself then if
- 23:22you're going to go fishing. Yeah, it's.
- 23:26So funny so far. It is a shame because like they
- 23:30they can push her into that damsel in distress role like
- 23:33she's hanging off a Cliff at the end of this.
- 23:35One. Yeah, that is.
- 23:36That is, yeah. But she's got such presence.
- 23:42I mean, even the way she's sitting there, she's like on a
- 23:45model shoot. It's it's.
- 23:48It's the Doctor Who Cosmopolitan shoot.
- 23:51Yeah. Oh, talking about women with
- 23:54presents. Amelia Rumford.
- 23:57There she is. Tell me why she is so fabulous.
- 24:05It's she reminds me so much of my archaeology teacher.
- 24:09It's uncanny. I did she teach her?
- 24:12I did. I did.
- 24:13Yeah. Well, yeah, I I used to do bit
- 24:18of archaeology sort of studying and that because I wasn't
- 24:22allowed to do a lot of PE, so I chose other things to do.
- 24:26Right. And my teacher was basically
- 24:30Professor Rumford. It was brilliant.
- 24:33A bit scatty, a bit eccentric. Yeah, used to get up on the desk
- 24:38and have a sword fight or set. Fire.
- 24:40For the waste paper basket and. Oh my, is she still with us?
- 24:45Do you know? I wouldn't have thought so.
- 24:48Oh no. Well, can we?
- 24:50Can we hear what was her surname?
- 24:52What was she? Misses what?
- 24:53Or miss what? Mr. Mr. Hope, Oh.
- 24:57Dear Miss. Hope.
- 24:59Well, Amelia Rumford, I have been long advocating that there
- 25:04needs to be an older woman companion in the TARDIS and I
- 25:08just think her and Tom would be blissful to get her on
- 25:11adventures. That would be brilliant.
- 25:14There's there's material there for a story for Lucy to write in
- 25:18there. Oh, there you go.
- 25:20Thank you for name checking Lucy.
- 25:22I mean, she, she does these sort of horrors, these kind of
- 25:25horrors really well, doesn't she?
- 25:27If anyone can pull it off, Lucy can.
- 25:30Absolutely. Well, after what you do with
- 25:31Miss Hawthorne. Yeah.
- 25:34I wonder, you know, Glenn, if perhaps there's a spin off show
- 25:37where you've got Miss Hawthorne, Amelia Rumford and what's the
- 25:41one from Seeds of Doom? Amelia Dukar.
- 25:45Dukar, Yeah. They're the crazy old women
- 25:48detective agency. What do you think?
- 25:50Yeah, that would be brilliant. That'd be Sunday night.
- 25:53View insulted. I want you to watch in a second.
- 25:56Right. You know, when she starts going
- 25:58on about the dates. Yes, it was done in the survey
- 26:00of all. And Tom Baker looks so pained.
- 26:04And I think it's because he's, he's realised that someone's
- 26:07come along, but it's more eccentric than him for once.
- 26:11He's definitely been upstaged and he.
- 26:14Well, who's this has just joined the scene.
- 26:16Oh. Couldn't possibly be a villain,
- 26:20could it? Well, no.
- 26:22Look at her, She's wearing a pink pink trouser suit.
- 26:25She looks very amiable. What is the relationship between
- 26:30this pair? Will you please explain it to
- 26:32me? Are you busy mates?
- 26:35I mean, how did they meet? Must have been through some sort
- 26:39of archaeological society somewhere, I mean.
- 26:45They're living in the house together, aren't they?
- 26:47They live in a lovely little cottage together.
- 26:50I think in the 70s we didn't judge, we just went OK, those
- 26:54two ladies live together. Yeah.
- 26:57Oh yeah, I see. You see where I'm going now?
- 27:00Yeah, I see. Yeah.
- 27:02I still hamster Glen all right. Yeah, I keep forgetting that.
- 27:06Sorry. I was in that stone circle
- 27:08there. Oh, wow.
- 27:09Have you? Been there.
- 27:11No. I've been to a lot of stone
- 27:13circles, but I've not been that one, no.
- 27:16I've I always say because I've done a few doctor locations and
- 27:19I've always said the next one I want to do is the roll right
- 27:21stones. Yeah, that would be amazing.
- 27:25It's it's a massive place when you look at it from above.
- 27:30Trouble is though, right it's when I go to these locations I
- 27:32tend to act like one of the characters.
- 27:34Yeah, just for fun. Mine.
- 27:36But all four of them are so amazing.
- 27:37Which one would I choose? Yeah.
- 27:40There's there's a richness of characters in this story, isn't
- 27:43there? There's, there is.
- 27:45There's a richness of characters, the richness of
- 27:48story. The dialogue I mean.
- 27:51I think this is a very witty script.
- 27:55It's, it is, it's very wit. It's it's the way they combine
- 27:58wittingness with a bit of mystery and and then obviously
- 28:02it's going to turn into a bit of horror.
- 28:04Do you like all of this sort of Celtic stuff?
- 28:06You know, it's talking about the obviously.
- 28:08The stone circles. And the the cults and things
- 28:12like that. I do.
- 28:14I do like all that. Yeah.
- 28:17I've. I've always often wondered
- 28:18though, whenever watching Doctor Who or a Hammer horror film, or
- 28:24why do the occultists always wear the same robes?
- 28:27It's always puzzled me. Why do they dress up?
- 28:30Who were they trying to impress? I've got an answer for you.
- 28:34Why they're precisely the same robes.
- 28:36It's because that's all that's in the BBC wardrobe at the time.
- 28:39So yeah, it's a bit obvious, isn't it?
- 28:43Yeah. I mean, if you just wore your
- 28:45normal clothes. If I wore this Dimensions in
- 28:47Time T-shirt to my cult meetings then nobody would have a clue.
- 28:51Exactly. Missed the trick there.
- 28:53Yeah. Oh.
- 28:54My God, imagine the dimensions in time cult.
- 28:58That would be amazing. We'd all go round chanting Mandy
- 29:02or Big Ron, Mandy or Big Ron. Big Ron.
- 29:07Mandy won, though, didn't she? Indeed.
- 29:10Oh, look at all this this gothic atmosphere.
- 29:13Now the. Flames and yeah, this is Hammer
- 29:15Horror. Now you mentioned that, are you
- 29:18a big fan of Hammer? I love hammer.
- 29:21Well, yeah, Hammer. And what's all them?
- 29:24Sort of our 70s, sixties, 70s horrors.
- 29:27But I think Hammers the iconic 1.
- 29:30Why would you say yes to me when I ask you a question like that?
- 29:33You know what we're going to play again then.
- 29:35Top three Hammer horror movies. Oh top free Hammer horror
- 29:41movies. Whatever springs to mind.
- 29:45Probably the hands of the Ripper.
- 29:46Oh. That sounds.
- 29:50Good. I'm now drastically looking at
- 29:53my shelf. I mean any of the Dracula films
- 29:58with Christopher Lee. OK, that's 2.
- 30:02And I'm going to say didn't wasn't one of the quite a mass
- 30:09made by horror? Yes.
- 30:11Yeah, there was. Yeah.
- 30:14Yeah, I'm going to say quite a mass in the pit.
- 30:17I have recently watched a couple of Hammers doing commentaries
- 30:21with Rob Valentine, so I watched The Mummy.
- 30:24And I. Watched one of the the
- 30:27Frankenstein ones for doing Brain and Morbius and oh I love
- 30:33the atmosphere of them. Yeah, they are good at I mean I
- 30:37think as as they got towards the late 70s, early 80s, they went a
- 30:42bit cheap Pawnish, shall we show, but they.
- 30:47Pawnish. Explain.
- 30:50Yourself, Sir? Well, you know, there's like
- 30:54you, you, you basic horror plot where someone run running
- 30:59through a forest away from something and their clothes
- 31:01accidentally fall off or a. Bit like terminus you mean?
- 31:05Yeah. Yeah, OK.
- 31:07Yeah. I see where you're coming from.
- 31:09You've got people like Kate Omar and Grid Pier, that sort of
- 31:11thing. Yeah, I mean, you had the
- 31:14vampire lovers, that was. Memorable.
- 31:20Yeah, yeah. Will you look at this set that
- 31:24isn't ABBC Studio? It's lovely, isn't it?
- 31:29It's with. The staircase and everything.
- 31:31And look. Look at the perspective out the
- 31:32window, the detail in the chair there.
- 31:36I mean, it's just gorgeous. It's.
- 31:39It's so beautiful. I love this man, Mr. Defriese,
- 31:44because. He.
- 31:45Comes in sort of all charm, doesn't he?
- 31:47Oh yes, hello. They're.
- 31:49Being they're being cleaned, Doctor, but come episode 2, he's
- 31:52there with Martha going where is the crow?
- 31:56You know, it goes very Hammer Horror then, doesn't it?
- 31:59Very sort of crazy camp. Yeah, you, you can tell Tom's
- 32:05just sort of, you know, you know, the doctor doesn't believe
- 32:10in, but he's, he's still winding him up along with it.
- 32:13I think this period, Tom, yeah, because he does play the fool
- 32:18quite a bit. He pulls the wall over so many
- 32:21people's eyes because they think he's stupid and he's absolutely
- 32:25the cleverest person in the room.
- 32:27Yeah, it's it's is it in the city of death when she says no
- 32:32one can be that stupid and. Yet he saves the day.
- 32:39He saves the day. Still he.
- 32:41Does. Now, why on earth are we
- 32:44focusing so much on these paintings that aren't on the
- 32:48wall? Well, the mystery deepens.
- 32:53It might. That's a very dirty wall,
- 32:56thinking about it. Well, yeah, I don't think he's
- 32:59clean. He don't strike me as somebody
- 33:00who has a maid. Maybe Martha does it.
- 33:02It's just really bad. She's very bad, Needs a new
- 33:06duster. Now look, I think crows get a
- 33:10bad rap. You know, I really like crows.
- 33:12I was. Feeding in the.
- 33:13Park yesterday. Yeah, and that how the hell did
- 33:18they get them to sit on top of the TARDIS?
- 33:22Patiently, I think. And they threw some bread up
- 33:26there. Oh, maybe actually that's a good
- 33:29idea. Yeah, big crumbs eat bread A.
- 33:32Bit of seed maybe? Yeah, Oh.
- 33:35Yeah, Oh, look, I think they're enticing A Ramana back to the
- 33:38cottage for a sausage sandwich. Here we go, sausage sandwich.
- 33:42Did you? Did your mum ever make you
- 33:44sausage sandwiches when you was watching Doctor Who?
- 33:47Not when I was watching Doctor Who, but when I when I got into
- 33:50sort of like my fan fan age and I'd be at home alone watching
- 33:54this. This would always make me make a
- 33:57sausage sandwich. Had to be done.
- 34:00Mark, it's his favorite thing. Sausage, egg and chips.
- 34:03Man, he just, if I make that every night, he'd be happy.
- 34:07That's good to me. Well, Yep, you've got to shake
- 34:09it up, right? I'm really boring with food.
- 34:14Oh, I'm far more excited than Mark is, if I'm honest.
- 34:16But I do love a sausage. Actually, seeing a crow close up
- 34:21there, that is quite sinister, isn't it?
- 34:24They are sinister looking creatures.
- 34:28I get. They're very gentle.
- 34:29I know they've got big beaks, but they're very gentle crows.
- 34:32Oh, look at that shot of Tom looking at the crow.
- 34:36Is he drinking? Oh.
- 34:38Joe, I've never actually noticed that before.
- 34:41Yeah. He looks very comfortable
- 34:42drinking Tom. That was very natural, wasn't?
- 34:47It remembering Andrew Tatara at the end of episode 1, like
- 34:50actually the same bloody thing happens, isn't it?
- 34:52He drinks in that and gets knocked out as well and
- 34:57cigarettes look as well. He's got a cigarette in his hand
- 34:59to. Frise he has.
- 35:01He will be doing that inside now.
- 35:07That was the thing. I mean, I noticed that watching
- 35:09those Hammer movies. Everybody was smoking.
- 35:12Yeah, that all that all came to an end sort of in the 90s I
- 35:17think, didn't that? Trouble is though, now pubs
- 35:21don't smell of smoke anymore. They smell of stale beer and
- 35:24piss. It ain't much better.
- 35:26No. But at least our lungs are in a
- 35:29better state. Yeah, look at the way he, oh,
- 35:33Defreese is sitting there, Mr. Mr. Prim and proper oh.
- 35:39He's the Lord of the Manor. He is.
- 35:42And the head of the cult, I mean, he's, he's got a reason to
- 35:45feel a bit arrogant. Invincible.
- 35:49Yeah, I love all of this though. Goddess of war, death and magic,
- 35:52The Kaliak. Oh, I never, I never see a crow
- 35:57out in in the world without thinking Kaliak.
- 36:02But you start saying it. Kaliak, Kaliak, Kaliak.
- 36:08Mind you, you know, whenever I'm in like a churchyard, yeah, I
- 36:13end up. So what did I say?
- 36:14And came on a company. Oh, God, I can't remember what
- 36:19it is now. Oh, heckartake, heckartake,
- 36:21heckartake. I'm still saying that.
- 36:23Yeah. I actually I think that that
- 36:28Kaliak mask is properly sinister, the sort of the bird
- 36:32mask. They certainly put some salt in
- 36:37scaring people in this one, I think.
- 36:40Oh, Glenn, this cliffhanger, right?
- 36:43I think on paper this cliffhanger is superb because
- 36:46it's the Doctor pushing Romana off a Cliff that's terrifying.
- 36:50But because Tom refused to do it in execution, it just comes
- 36:55across very bizarre, doesn't it? It is it?
- 36:59It doesn't quite flow, does it? I mean, do you understand why he
- 37:04said no? Why he said no?
- 37:05I'm not going. I'm the hero.
- 37:06I don't want to push. Mary to yeah, I, I can, I can
- 37:10see his point. I mean, we're, we're looking at
- 37:14it in hindsight, I suppose. What's the get around though?
- 37:18Like how you know if the actor isn't willing to do it?
- 37:20I suppose you have to do the POV shot that they go for.
- 37:25Yeah. Oh, that does look quite high
- 37:28actually, doesn't it? I live my cliffs as well, you
- 37:33know, so I'll make sure I don't walk with Tom Baker down there.
- 37:38No, I don't walk with Tom Baker. Then that's a.
- 37:40Good. Chance massive sign that says
- 37:43danger Cliff edge. They all do now.
- 37:45You know the beachhead where I live, it's all crumbling away.
- 37:49Yeah. I mean, it's a good stunt
- 37:52because it does look like they have literally shoved somebody
- 37:55off a Cliff. Yeah, that's that.
- 37:59That is a good an ironic cliffhanger.
- 38:04Wow, Glen. Why would you say that to me
- 38:06now? You know what I'm going to ask
- 38:08you now, don't you? What is the top three
- 38:10cliffhangers? What of all time?
- 38:13I'm afraid so, yes. Come on to our episode 1.
- 38:17Let's go big. I mean, you've got you've got
- 38:22the Dalek going up the stairs in remembrance.
- 38:24Oh. Yeah, 1.
- 38:26Brilliant. Boy, you put me on the spot now.
- 38:30Well, come on, I'm trying to test your knowledge, see how
- 38:33much you know about this stuff. Oh no, I can't think.
- 38:39Me brain's gone blank. What about I'm going to throw
- 38:42some at you then? What about cases of Andrews?
- 38:45Only one or three. OK, then yeah, that's a good,
- 38:49good one. Hang on, what's going on here?
- 38:54I've got so many mice set up here, I'm not one on I think.
- 39:02I think the Dalek coming out of the River Thames, that's two
- 39:08Dalek ones I've chosen there. Yeah, but they do get great
- 39:11cliffhangers. Come on.
- 39:12And one that always sticks in my mind, which play played havoc
- 39:17with my parents when I was on holiday.
- 39:19One was when Scar off pulls his mask off in the city of Death.
- 39:26That traumed me, that really I heard.
- 39:30That, like Cy Hart tells me that all the time that really
- 39:33traumatized him as well, or I think it intrigued him, but I
- 39:37have heard people say it terrified them as well.
- 39:40It it, it was it. We was on holiday in the caravan
- 39:46in the middle of nowhere and mum and dad were sitting in like
- 39:51front of them. What would be the living room
- 39:53bit of the caravan and it must have only been about 10:00 at
- 39:58night after 10 at night, something like that.
- 39:59And my sister been in the troublemaker.
- 40:01She she's like, come on, let's creep out and go for a walk
- 40:04outside. So we crept out the caravan not
- 40:08far from the caravan was was like woods in the lake.
- 40:12So there's there's me, you know, a toddler and my sister walking
- 40:16around in the middle of. The night on this, on this part
- 40:21where he's hardly in on back and all of a sudden my sister just
- 40:23turns around to me and goes, imagine if Skarov was coming,
- 40:27was coming through the reeds on that lake, and that was it.
- 40:32Jesus, my little legs took me back to that caravan quicker
- 40:35than a rocket. Your sister sounded like a
- 40:38delight when she was younger. Oh, she yeah.
- 40:42Isn't everyone's sister like that, though?
- 40:44My sister used to make me watch Freddy Krueger movies.
- 40:46They bloody terrified me. And she goes, no, you're going
- 40:49to sit there and watch it. You know, when he, when he came
- 40:52out the TV. Yeah.
- 40:54And when he made that man's braces into a puppet, I was
- 40:57like, oh God, please, I want to go upstairs.
- 40:59She goes, no, you're going to sit there and watch it.
- 41:02They're evil little sisters, aren't they?
- 41:04They. Are like you certainly are.
- 41:07Well look a fabulous episode 1, wouldn't you agree?
- 41:11That was that. I think that is possibly.
- 41:14I know it's my favorite story but it's one of the best episode
- 41:18ones. Yeah, in terms of atmosphere.
- 41:22You know, in terms of that, yeah.
- 41:24Yeah, definitely what and great characters as well.
- 41:27Yeah, I was. Yeah, I was inside.
- 41:28We've met so many great characters.
- 41:32Well, are you prepared to hold my hand as we head into episode
- 41:362 and watch hulking great rocks tearing about the countryside,
- 41:41I. Think so?
- 41:42I think we should grab a sausage sandwich.
- 41:46Yeah, sounds fun. OK.
