Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Beware of the Comparison Trap
Transcript
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily popping in with another installment of five
- 0:19Speaker 1: Minute Friday. You know the drill now telling you a story,
- 0:23Speaker 1: offering you a thought prompt to bring you in to
- 0:26Speaker 1: the weekend, and then sharing some cool stuff, some highlights
- 0:30Speaker 1: from the week, what I'm listening to, what I'm reading,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and perhaps some cool initiatives that I just think you
- 0:39Speaker 1: need to check out a SAP this week. I'm kind
- 0:45Speaker 1: of in my feelings, to be honest, my birthday is
- 0:48Speaker 1: coming up. It's next Tuesday, June second. Shout out to
- 0:53Speaker 1: any other geminis that might be listening to this, And
- 0:56Speaker 1: I think as we can all relate that when a
- 1:00Speaker 1: birthday comes, you start to reflect, right, You think about
- 1:04Speaker 1: the past three hundred and sixty five days, You think
- 1:06Speaker 1: about the next three hundred and sixty five days, and
- 1:09Speaker 1: then of course you just think about everything that's going
- 1:12Speaker 1: on in your life.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And It's funny, when I.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Hit thirty, I didn't necessarily feel super stressed. I think
- 1:20Speaker 1: a lot of people get to thirty and they have
- 1:23Speaker 1: this profound moment where they think about where they thought
- 1:26Speaker 1: that they would be at thirty, and what's happening and
- 1:28Speaker 1: what's not happening, and to be honest, I didn't really
- 1:31Speaker 1: feel a lot of that, but saying that on Tuesday
- 1:35Speaker 1: I turn thirty two just gives me, I don't know,
- 1:39Speaker 1: it makes me feel some kind of way. I actually
- 1:41Speaker 1: just the other day one of my dearest friends his
- 1:44Speaker 1: birthday is on May twenty seventh. Then I said to
- 1:46Speaker 1: him as I was walking up Second Avenue on my
- 1:49Speaker 1: morning walk, I said, Tom, can you believe that we've
- 1:52Speaker 1: known each other for almost twenty years? I have known
- 1:55Speaker 1: him for more than half of my life, and that's
- 1:58Speaker 1: just crazy. Anyway, I digress. So I the other day
- 2:01Speaker 1: was standing in my bathroom getting ready to go to
- 2:04Speaker 1: bed and brushing my teeth. I looked in the mirror
- 2:07Speaker 1: and I feel like sometimes when something upsets you like
- 2:12Speaker 1: it kind of you feel it bubbling up, you know
- 2:14Speaker 1: it's coming, You're like about to get emotional.
- 2:16Speaker 2: You get emotional, and it's like a whole progression.
- 2:18Speaker 1: But I literally looked in the mirror and just had
- 2:21Speaker 1: out of nowhere. It felt like this moment where I
- 2:25Speaker 1: thought to myself, your mom had you at thirty two,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and I got like visibly upset, which was just so
- 2:33Speaker 1: again unexpected and a little overwhelming, and I had this
- 2:37Speaker 1: moment where it really built up inside of me and
- 2:39Speaker 1: I felt it in my chest, and I walked over
- 2:41Speaker 1: to my bed and I sat down and sure, for
- 2:44Speaker 1: like maybe a solid minute, I just thought about this
- 2:47Speaker 1: idea of being a woman at thirty two and being
- 2:52Speaker 1: married and having my second child, which is not happening,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but that's what happened to my mom. And then like
- 2:58Speaker 1: and my next breath, I kind of kind of exhaled
- 3:01Speaker 1: all of that out, and I was sitting there and
- 3:04Speaker 1: I just thought, that's not what's happening for you. You are
- 3:08Speaker 1: not having a child at thirty two. I will call
- 3:10Speaker 1: that right now, and you know what, that's okay. And
- 3:16Speaker 1: after I let out that exhale and I kind of
- 3:19Speaker 1: wrangled my feelings, so to speak, I immediately got to
- 3:24Speaker 1: be really proud because I flipped this script and start
- 3:27Speaker 1: to think of all of the things that have happened
- 3:31Speaker 1: in the past thirty two years. I ended last week's
- 3:33Speaker 1: Five Minute Friday by sharing the quote that's on my
- 3:36Speaker 1: wall that says, remember when you wanted what you have now,
- 3:39Speaker 1: And that's so true when I take a second to
- 3:43Speaker 1: reflect on I mean, just even the last year Nevertheless,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you know the thirty that happened before that. I am
- 3:49Speaker 1: so blessed with what my life has brought me, with
- 3:54Speaker 1: all of the experiences that I've had. I mean, aside
- 3:56Speaker 1: from fast facts, running eight May Marathon, successfully going to college,
- 4:02Speaker 1: getting my first job in New York City, living in
- 4:04Speaker 1: New York City.
- 4:05Speaker 2: On my own.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I mean every day when I sit in this one
- 4:08Speaker 1: bedroom apartment that I successfully pay for month in and
- 4:13Speaker 1: month out, it blows my mind that I have managed
- 4:16Speaker 1: to on my own be able to have this lifestyle.
- 4:21Speaker 1: I think about, you know, the work that I've done personally,
- 4:24Speaker 1: whether that's with the help of my therapist or just
- 4:26Speaker 1: on my own and journaling. I think about hurdle, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: think about all of you. I think about the little
- 4:32Speaker 1: things like getting up in the morning and believing enough
- 4:35Speaker 1: in myself and knowing that I am worthy of my
- 4:37Speaker 1: own investment to go out for something as simple as
- 4:39Speaker 1: a run. There are so many things big and small
- 4:43Speaker 1: that I have accomplished over the past thirty one years.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And just because I am not where someone else is
- 4:50Speaker 1: in their life right now doesn't mean that what I
- 4:53Speaker 1: have accomplished is any less great.
- 4:55Speaker 2: And that is a fact.
- 4:57Speaker 1: So for anyone else that can identify with this, that
- 5:00Speaker 1: can relate with this comparison trap that wonders if maybe
- 5:04Speaker 1: they're good enough. I just want to tell you that
- 5:08Speaker 1: you're good enough.
- 5:09Speaker 2: We're all good.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Enough, and it's normal to have these feelings. But I
- 5:14Speaker 1: think that what's most important is to take a step
- 5:16Speaker 1: back and recognize that we all have our own accomplishments,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and those accomplishments, these everyday feats, they make us great.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So my prompt for you this week, what is something
- 5:32Speaker 1: that you've done in the past month that makes you proud?
- 5:36Speaker 2: Again?
- 5:36Speaker 1: What is something that you've done in the past month
- 5:39Speaker 1: that makes you proud? All Right, highlights of the week,
- 5:43Speaker 1: And as you know, all of these links to everything
- 5:46Speaker 1: I mentioned can be found in the description to this
- 5:49Speaker 1: episode in the show notes.
- 5:50Speaker 2: All right, let's see here. First things.

- 6:48Speaker 1: Another thing to check out a dear friend of mine,
- 6:51Speaker 1: such a sweetheart, Cassie short Sleeve. She just launched Deer Sunday,
- 6:55Speaker 1: which is an online platform offering real pregnancy, postpartum and
- 6:59Speaker 1: new mother guidance.
- 7:00Speaker 2: She is a.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Super smart veteran journalist and after having her daughter, who's
- 7:07Speaker 1: named Sunday, last year, she basically realized that she just
- 7:09Speaker 1: wanted a lot of information that she didn't have great
- 7:12Speaker 1: access to and that is where her new baby, Deer
- 7:16Speaker 1: Sunday comes in. So Deer Sunday offers pregnancy e guides, wemtars,
- 7:20Speaker 1: prenatal coaching services, and so much more. And to celebrate
- 7:24Speaker 1: the launch, Cassie's encouraging woman to share a photo of

- 7:43Speaker 1: another opportunity to give back. Two of my friends, Nadav
- 7:47Speaker 1: and Kenny, we met a few years ago doing CrossFit

- 7:51Speaker 2: That feels like so long ago. God.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Anyway, just last year they launched their own group fitness
- 7:56Speaker 1: studio here in New York called Rogata, And as you
- 7:59Speaker 1: can imagine, and they're.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Having a little bit of a hard time.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You know, it's a hard time to be a studio
- 8:04Speaker 1: owner here when you can't open up your space to
- 8:08Speaker 1: fitness people. And so they are trying to save their
- 8:11Speaker 1: studio in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and they
- 8:14Speaker 1: are stepping up and trying to raise money. So beginning
- 8:16Speaker 1: tomorrow Saturday, May thirtieth, and they'll be attempting a series
- 8:20Speaker 1: of increasingly difficult challenges with the hope of raising awareness
- 8:23Speaker 1: and money for ROGATA. Tomorrow, they're kicking it off with

- 8:30Speaker 1: Facebook Live, Instagram Live, and a zoom because why not?
