Latest / Rugby Rivals - Sir John Kirwan & Victor Matfield / Springbok & All Black Fans Collide Before Second Test!
Transcript
- 0:00Straight in, I love it.
- 0:01Right, let's go to a special edition of Rugby Rivals, brought to you by Ram Hand and Couriers.
- 0:08We're doing something different with JK and Victor, basically on the piss.
- 0:12We thought that we'd see what the fans think.
- 0:15So we've got two different podcasts, one from New Zealand, one from South Africa, and I
- 0:23So rather new sort of spelling shit, Ra, I think let's go to Dame.
- 0:29Let's let the South Africans.
- 0:31Are you happy with your team?
- 0:33Are you happy with, you know, going into the game?
- 0:36Are you in a good mood?
- 0:38Well, firstly, I just want to say thank you to the Springboks and Rossi for losing that first game, just to make things interesting.
- 0:47You guys understand.
- 0:48It would have been kind of boring if Springboks just came out and smoked you guys in the first test.
- 0:54So we make it interesting.
- 0:55Draw my cells.
- 0:57You get it?
- 0:57So yeah, going into Cape Town, we're underdogs.
- 1:01Do I like the team?
- 1:03experience man like you can't buy experience so i'm running with that i hope so but as a springbok fan i want to win but as a rugby fan i want the series to be leveled as well so and i get that new zealanders don't care for that but i want like we've got to win man we've got to win i don't care if it's a kicking game or running game we just got to win
- 1:30Is that scary, Rara and Gareth?
- 1:33You know, because often a test match comes down to who needs to win it the most.
- 1:38You know, that's often the deciding factor.
- 1:40And so they're going to really need to win this one.
- 1:43Boy, do they ever.
- 1:45They really do.
- 1:47But I don't know, Rara, you've got a little prediction of your own, don't you, mate?
- 1:51Yeah.
- 1:52everybody thinks out there that surely they're going to win this one, but I don't know.
- 1:56Maybe I've got a feeling like the ABs might just be able to go two on the trot.
- 2:01It's definitely going to be two in the trot.
- 2:04I think we're on this.
- 2:06We're I don't know.
- 2:08Rick, you've been around a bit in these in these in these in these and these are now you're not old, but you know, you've been here.
- 2:15You've seen you've seen a few iterations of this all black team.
- 2:20And I don't know.
- 2:21I got a sense of this this this growth that we've got going on.
- 2:24And me and Gareth are talking about it.
- 2:25We've got the old school principal vibe with Dave Rennie in there.
- 2:29And he's just got this little slow build.
- 2:31And sure, the Springboks are going to bounce back and try and take one off us after ripping their hearts out last weekend.
- 2:38But, mate, we're only going to get better as well.
- 2:41Just think about, like, what the growth that we've had in the last little while.
- 2:45It's just going to keep going, mate.
- 2:46And know that it's going to be a whitewash, Rick.
- 2:49There's no doubt.
- 2:50A whitewash!
- 2:51It's ridiculous.
- 2:52I love it.
- 2:53Like, it's all well and good to say things beforehand, right?
- 2:57Like everyone can, you can just say whatever beforehand and then the result comes out and then that whole tune changes, right?
- 3:04It happened.
- 3:05It happened to me.
- 3:05It happens, right?
- 3:07It happens to the best of us.
- 3:08So you can say you're on a slow build.
- 3:11You can say you've got the principal teacher vibe going on there.
- 3:14But then when you lose in Cape Town and it's all leveled up and then you start questioning selections, you start questioning how you play.
- 3:22Um, but I love the chat beforehand, man.
- 3:24That's confidence.
- 3:25That's confidence the Springboks had before test one.
- 3:27And that's the confidence you guys have got now for test two.
- 3:31Um, but, but is all I'm saying.
- 3:36I just hope for the South African sake that they, so they can get out of this existential crisis that they win this game because the reaction of some of those media over there, I couldn't believe it.
- 3:51They could not believe it.
- 3:53They were sitting there.
- 3:55They just had no idea.
- 3:56They thought that was completely impossible that this could happen.
- 3:59So you have to win this weekend.
- 4:01Otherwise, I think some serious shit's going to go down over there.
- 4:05I'll just ask you something, Dane.
- 4:07So when the Springlands are hot on attack and they were scrumming and getting penalties for scrums, and...
- 4:15the commentator, I was listening to the South African commentary, and Shimi was sort of saying, you know, if we get another penalty, then that's a yellow card.
- 4:22That means that, you know, we'll have one of their players sent off, and we need to go for that.
- 4:26We need, and I was thinking to myself, why don't you just go for scoring a try?
- 4:31Yeah, exactly right.
- 4:32Why don't they use that dominant play, right?
- 4:34Get up their ability to set the ball wide.
- 4:37Why are they so, can they not beat us 15 on 15?
- 4:40Do they have to focus on trying to take players off to win a game?
- 4:45It's the strong point, right?
- 4:47Is the scrum, okay?
- 4:49So, yeah, I'm there.
- 4:50I'm here.
- 4:50I'm here.
- 4:51It's just...
- 4:51It's the strong point.
- 4:53It is a strong point, right?
- 4:56But I'm also in the boat of...
- 4:59Like, that was just trying to beat a dead horse.
- 5:01Like, it doesn't matter if you're dominating the scrum and you're not scoring points.
- 5:05Like, you need to fucking, we need to score points.
- 5:07That's how you win the game.
- 5:08It doesn't say on the scoreboard, dominated the scrums.
- 5:12It says how much points you got.
- 5:13So there's that fine, there's that fucking, there's that fine line, right?
- 5:17If they did win that scrum, that Fletcher Newell one, there probably would have been a yellow card and they probably would have gone for another scrum and then it could have snowballed like that.
- 5:26I think that, that,
- 5:27That scrum from Fletcher Newell and those other boys that were on at the time, George Bauer on war was such a big turning point, man.
- 5:36That literally changed the game.
- 5:37So like while I'm on the side of, yeah, the Springboks scrum was dominant.
- 5:43That All Black scrum, that was fucking huge, man.
- 5:46That was huge.
- 5:48But my points around mindset is like.
- 5:51Yeah.
- 5:53Do you see the scrum as a way of winning penalties and getting players off the field?
- 5:57If you have a dominant scrum and you've got the defense going backwards, that's a great time to attack.
- 6:02That's a great time to...
- 6:04So do you think Rar and Gareth, our scrum, will stand up this week?
- 6:11Yeah, definitely.
- 6:12I mean, they will have, they can't, they don't want to spend an entire, yeah, just basing it on hope, yeah.
- 6:18No, they don't want to spend an entire 55 minutes getting absolutely murdered in the scrum.
- 6:22I mean, I think putting Vai back into lock, which Ra didn't agree with me on for a while, but I mean, I think that's a great move.
- 6:30I think he plays excellently at lock.
- 6:33So yeah, the scrum is going to be better.
- 6:34So I'm just keen to know what South Africa's game plan is.
- 6:39What is the tactic this way?
- 6:41How do they play differently to dominate us in a different way?
- 6:46I'm so intrigued.
- 6:47And it's all about absorbing that pressure, right?
- 6:49So South Africa is going to come at us.
- 6:52They're going to smoke us in a couple of areas of the game, no matter what, for a certain period.
- 6:56So it's just about, as Dave Rennie likes to put it, and I'm a bit worried about whether people might take this literally, about barring up.
- 7:04Someone's got to give them that sort of the other meaning of what that actually means.
- 7:07But I feel like he's telling everyone to bar up quite a lot.
- 7:11Yeah, he's using that.
- 7:11And I'm just a bit worried.
- 7:12Not quite right.
- 7:14You know, some of the youngers might take that the wrong way.
- 7:18Yeah, barring up, yeah, it's not really what it means, but you know, whatever gets the boys going, I guess.
- 7:24Yeah, true.
- 7:25That's their term, you know.
- 7:26Whatever gets the blood pumping, yeah.
- 7:29Yeah.
- 7:30I mean, a big change for South Africa is obviously Andre Pollard.
- 7:35The saviour.
- 7:37Yeah.
- 7:38What South Africa need to do is be more clinical and not on attack.
- 7:41That's their big pick.
- 7:41You know, they need to, you know, use all those entries into 22 and turn them into points.
- 7:48Is that Andre Pollard?
- 7:49Is he going to be more clinical in the attack?
- 7:51I mean, he's going to kick the ball a lot more.
- 7:53Yeah.
- 7:54Is he going to fire the attack you need?
- 7:58You'd think with the experience he has, you'd have a bit more composure in those key moments of the game and would think a bit more, I guess, wider on what's happening.
- 8:10I do think around all of that, I think, and you guys might not agree with this, you probably won't at all, but Siakulisi's experience around like whether to go for posts.
- 8:21or whether to feel the momentum of the game and then back themselves to go for prize, even though he probably will only play for 30, 40 minutes, I think that will be a big part of the game as well.
- 8:32Because like in that first test, we're going for three points.
- 8:35to start, like, that sets the tone, I feel like, throughout the game.
- 8:39It's like, no, we've been scoring tries.
- 8:41Last year, we scored 50-something tries throughout the year.
- 8:45We've been scoring tries.
- 8:46Why, all of a sudden, the biggest game of the year, oh, let's kick for post.
- 8:51Like, that makes no fucking sense at all.
- 8:53Apparently, the weather's going to be shit this weekend.
- 8:56But I want to see the guys use the ball, man.
- 8:58We've got athletes out the back, Kurt Lee Orensen, Damien Brunser, Ethan Hooker.
- 9:03Like fucking use these guys, man.
- 9:05You've got a platform from the forwards, most dominant set piece in world rugby.
- 9:10As a 10, you're sitting back going, fuck, every scrum, every line out, I've got front foot ball, let's use the ball.
- 9:17And I hope they fucking do that.
- 9:19If they don't, then I hope the All Blacks win because it fucking pisses me off, man.
- 9:27Yeah, they have to.
- 9:28They have to play like that, surely.
- 9:30They've got to come back from the five tries to one.
- 9:32There's been many a squeaky bum Springboks victory over the years, hasn't there?
- 9:37A little scrape by by one point or so.
- 9:40So yeah, I mean, it'd be awesome if they dominated, not for us.
- 9:43It'd be great for you.
- 9:45I'd be happy for you.
- 9:46I'd be celebrating for you, mate.
- 9:48Do you think there's so much respect between the two countries?
- 9:52And Rasi did a lovely thing by asking for everyone to be silent to ruin the haka.
- 9:58Do you think South Africa needs to put that aside a little bit and make it uncomfortable for us?
- 10:03You know, why be nice?
- 10:05Well, me and Gareth talked about this this week.
- 10:08You know, like, there seemed to be in that first test quite a few distractions.
- 10:12You know, we had D. Linde's 100th game where he brought on all of his whole extended family when he ran out of the tunnel.
- 10:21We had a couple of jets, you know.
- 10:23We had the jet flyovers.
- 10:24You know, it was a lot of distraction and a lot of fanfare.
- 10:27And, you know, maybe there should have just been a little bit more focus on...
- 10:31you know what was in front of them you know and that's what i think they're going to bring this week so we've got to be honest for that yeah we've got another centurion this week don't we isn't that uh who's got their 100th game this week yeah right peter steph oh that's huge they're gonna get up for that aren't they
- 10:48They're getting, they're getting, that's what we thought last week, mate.
- 10:51No, yeah, but Delende doesn't really count.
- 10:54This is Peter Steph.
- 10:55What do you mean?
- 10:56Delende doesn't count.
- 10:57What is one of the best centers in the world of rugby?
- 11:01What are you talking about?
- 11:02Centurions for the spring box against the all blacks.
- 11:06It's not a thing.
- 11:07Like John Smith lost.
- 11:09John Davilias lost.
- 11:12Damien Gallander lost.
- 11:13Peter Steff the Toy.
- 11:15Oh, no.
- 11:15Had a home game.
- 11:16Home game for the Allbacks.
- 11:17It's a curse.
- 11:18The Cape Town fucking support for the Allbacks is through the roof, man.
- 11:21So it's a – I still think they need to put the Eden Park record on show at Cape Town because it's a home game for you guys.
- 11:30yeah i reckon they should time it so that the jet flies over during the haka like they did that one time just do it just ruin the haka just fly right through it and see what happens as long as they don't sing ole ole that that gets me i can't stand that oh yeah that's just a bit boy it's a bit basic isn't it yeah get a zulu dance out i wouldn't mind if they did that yeah do a dance yeah i know that'd be awesome yeah do a dance yeah
- 12:00It would be nice to see someone do something in response to the Haka again.
- 12:04Gone are the days of the Walsh and Matilda and stuff, but you know when people used to really front up and make a big line, and it was something that was really, there was a little bit of pushback, which I think is always quite cool.
- 12:18It is a challenge at the end of the day.
- 12:20You want something back.
- 12:21Even just a little Owen Farrell smile would be nice.
- 12:25Even just a little bit at the top of the V.
- 12:27Why not?
- 12:28Do something, make a funny shape, get in a circle.
- 12:31I don't know.
- 12:31A lick of the lips.
- 12:33Henry Pollock.
- 12:34Lick of the lips.
- 12:36Lick of the lips.
- 12:37The lick of the lips is brilliant.
- 12:38The best response to the haka, I think, is not even focus on it.
- 12:43Like, you guys do your haka, that's cool.
- 12:45We're actually getting ready to beat you.
- 12:47So we're not going to, that's your thing.
- 12:50That's cool.
- 12:51We'll respect it.
- 12:52But at the same time, while you're doing it, we're thinking about how we're going to beat you.
- 12:56I thought for me the most special moment of that game, for me personally,
- 13:03We were seeing the old fella, Fitzy, out there with his little flag, you know, and then there was a moment when they went into the anthems and I could see Sean didn't really know where he was supposed to go, what he was supposed to do.
- 13:16And I don't know if anyone even thought about it.
- 13:18And then Artie saw him and then he went in and he just grabbed Sean by the waist and pulled him in and went, you know what?
- 13:30You're the foundation on which this team was built.
- 13:32You were part of this, you know, and to see, you know, Sean just loved that moment.
- 13:39Um, just showed me.
- 13:40Oh, it was beautiful.
- 13:42How connected the team is to its history and the words like legacy and not just a marketing device.
- 13:49I thought it was, I thought it was great.
- 13:51Um,
- 13:52All right, well, there's just so Dane, tell us just in summary, a little bit about your podcast and your prediction for the game.
- 14:03So kick on rugby everywhere.
- 14:05Uh, I I'm even on Tik Tok, even though I'm nearly 40 years old, but I'm on, I'm on Tik Tok as well, I kick on rugby, kick on rugby everywhere.
- 14:14We've just started, uh, the Instagram again, because, uh, thanks super sports for copyright and, and pulling my Instagram account.
- 14:22But, um, we're back on, on Instagram as well.
- 14:25And it's just, it's all rugby, man.
- 14:27I, I love my rugby.
- 14:28Yes.
- 14:28I'm a.
- 14:29Yes, I'm a Springbok fan, but I kind of built my content and what I talk around being kind of non-biased, right?
- 14:38So I'm just, it's rugby first.
- 14:40Rugby always been first.
- 14:41I'm very opinionated about rugby, but love it, man.
- 14:45I love all the response, love the banter as well.
- 14:48Prediction.
- 14:50And I'm going to try something out here because my predictions have been absolutely trash this greatest rivalry tour.
- 14:58So I'm going for the opposite, right?
- 15:00I'm going, I'm going all blacks to win by eight.
- 15:04And hopefully that flips down and then the screen box wins.
- 15:08I love it.
- 15:12Imagine if you're right.
- 15:14and I'm wearing the springboks he might be yeah I'll take that I'll take that any day South African saying we're going to win Matt that's gold yeah that's worked for us last time worked a treat worked a treat yeah so I'm going for the opposite effect what do you think Ra?
- 15:40we know what you think and now the Royal Blacks win
- 15:43Are you speaking to me, sorry?
- 15:44You don't want to know what I think, what my prediction is going to be?
- 15:47It's going to be a whitewash, Matt.
- 15:49We're going to be up probably, I don't know, 10 points at halftime, and I'm going, they'll come back at us, but I think we're going to push to a little maybe 15-point victory by the end of the game.
- 16:04That's going to be us.
- 16:06Yeah.
- 16:06okay I'm not gonna go I'm gonna go I'm gonna go I'm gonna go a squeaky bum result to the all blacks I'm gonna go you know think like Richie McCaw through the middle of the line out or Izzy Dagg almost running it into the dead ball area that that kind of game but an all blacks victory you know they're not playing oh are they not no tell us tell us a bit about your show
- 16:33At my show?
- 16:35Well, combined your show.
- 16:38Our SuperSmack.
- 16:39Well, SuperSmack is a little podcast that we've been doing for what, nearly a year and a half, two years now.
- 16:46It actually all started from a chat group called SuperSmack.
- 16:51A bunch of mates who just give each other absolute shit about our Super Rugby teams
- 16:56Ra supports the Chiefs, which is an unfortunate thing for him.
- 17:01I'm a Hurricane supporter, the 2026 Super Rugby Champions.
- 17:06All right, mate.
- 17:07Naturally, a great time.
- 17:08And then we've got a couple of other Blues or Chiefs supporters in there.
- 17:12We don't have anyone from the Crusaders, and we made a conscious choice never to have anyone from Canterbury in our group.
- 17:19And I think it's going to stay that way just because we were just afraid that they would always win, essentially.
- 17:25why but uh yeah we review the super rugby and now we you know we get into the internationals when we started the podcast i don't think we thought there were going to be this many weeks of rugby in the year that we'd have to talk about so it's uh it takes a lot of time uh they play a lot of rugby we didn't really realize just how much rugby gets played between npc super and international so it's never ending it just goes it's never ending that
- 17:50man it's ridiculous how much play well but it's also about seeing seeing that yeah play a welfare for sure but it's about seeing the lighter stuff for us you know like we um we were always missing um um hearing about some of the funny moments and the the things that sort of happen away from the the usual punditry so that's kind of where that's our perspective on the pod so if you're um
- 18:13Hopefully there's some people out there that are keen to have a little bit of a giggle with us.
- 18:17We try to be funny.
- 18:19Some people don't really like it.
- 18:20I'm sure you get that a lot, Dane.
- 18:23Some people don't seem to have a sense of humor out there, but hey, we try.
- 18:27We try.
- 18:28That's true.
- 18:30Very trying.
- 18:33All right, gentlemen.
- 18:35Is there something on this game between you guys?
- 18:40um no i'm not getting a tattoo i'm not you probably donned and you probably donned an all black jumper yeah and i look pretty good in that too yeah you do you do mate you're gonna look great in it next week i'm just not getting a tattoo it's not happening
- 19:06Oh, that was insane, that guy doing that.
- 19:08Did he actually got it in the end, right?
- 19:10Yeah, yup.
- 19:12Brilliant.
- 19:12Yup, wild.
- 19:13That's brilliant.
- 19:15Wild.
- 19:15Absolutely wild on the first game.
- 19:17So dumb.
- 19:18Yeah, no, that's dumb.
- 19:19And that's, you know, with all due respect to him, it's making it about him, you know?
- 19:25And it's not really about him.
- 19:28Like, calm down, brother.
- 19:30Content, content is content.
- 19:32Content.
- 19:34content is bullshit yeah you know like content is ego and as we wrap up this content well yeah um thanks for um putting your egos on display for us and uh let's catch up again next week sounds good yeah it'd be great mate thanks rick thanks boys guys go the ab's
