- 0:00Back with Gino and then Top of the Arts the Men and Butler at the
- 0:04Excel Center, the kind of sports network Seaton Hall tomorrow night you played them,
- 0:09they played your tough first time around, physical and they've got they've got
- 0:14some decent size that you don't normally see. They've got some people that will
- 0:18push you around on the lane. And it was a physical game down in
- 0:21South Orange. It was very much so very physically. It was like an
- 0:25ugly kind of game. And uh, I don't even know what their record
- 0:33is. They have a losing record in the league, don't they see five
- 0:35and six? But they play, they play crazy like they'll they'll play great
- 0:40one game and then you think that they're going and then those those those struggle
- 0:46the next game. Then they'll play great and win, then they'll struggle the
- 0:48next one. So they you know, they've had a hard time putting three
- 0:53or four games together. But HM, the big thing about Seaton Halls,
- 1:02just like playing Saint John's, those teams are almost mirror images of each other.
- 1:07So it's going to be very very similar to what we just saw on
- 1:11on Sunday. Yeah, and they're coming off a lost to Nova where they
- 1:14didn't do much in the second half. The in fact, they didn't even
- 1:17make a three for the first time in forever. Villanova just did that not
- 1:19too long ago before they played US. Last week they went they went over
- 1:25from long distance. Yeah, it's tough to win when you go five for
- 1:26twenty four in the second half. That's what happened against Villanova. Yeah,
- 1:32yeah, that's why. You know, like my friend Doug Bruno says,
- 1:36it's called basketball. Yes, put the ball in the basket, right,
- 1:42you know, if you can't do that, then you can't. Like page
- 1:45one time, you know this, a kid tekes, you goes, she
- 1:48goes, coach that K can't shoot. Who's I go, Yeah, she
- 1:51struggles shooting. He goes, I don't understand. How can you play basketball
- 1:53that long and you can't shoot? Isn't that the point of playing basketball?
- 1:57That's like saying, what's your favorite sport? Have any weaknesses? I can't
- 2:01hit? Then why are you playing baseball? I loved it, but then
- 2:05I finally gave it up after Iceland. I was a good bunner though.
- 2:08I just love that. Yeah, well then you got out at the right
- 2:12time. Yes, yes, indeed, so I broadcast instead once in a
- 2:15while there you go. We were talking about this on the pregame at Villanova.
- 2:20That's the one city in all the years that you have coached that has
- 2:23been a stop every year, whether it's been Villanova or the short time we
- 2:27were in the American and you went to Temple. And that's always a tough
- 2:30trip for you. I mean, because there's a lot of distractions because of
- 2:34family, does that make it tougher for you? I mean, I know
- 2:38you enjoy seeing your family. Don't get me wrong there. I'm not trying
- 2:42to say that, but there's a lot of distractions for you when you go.
- 2:44Yeah, I remember the first year's eighty five, eighty six, eighty
- 2:47seven. Well, we would go down to Villanova and I knew we had
- 2:52no chance to win. They were the best team in the league, and
- 2:54so it was kind of difficult. Was Harry there, Yeah, Okay,
- 2:58Harry was there before mister mister Nova. I'll tell you when I'll tell you
- 3:08when Harry was coaching at Villanova, I was an assistant at Joseph Saint Joseph's
- 3:13University, which is seven miles from Villanoke. I was an assistant there when
- 3:16Harry was the head coach. At Villanover. That's how long ago that was.
- 3:23So yeah, going going back there in the early in the mid eighties,
- 3:28I knew we weren't going to win. So it was a really tough
- 3:30trip back because you know you're going down there and you know you're going to
- 3:36lose. And and that's okay because you know they're the best team in the
- 3:39league and you're not as good. That's all there is to it. That's
- 3:42fine. Then when we started winning and we won the biggest championship when you
- 3:47know, as he talked about, when Meg was a freshman, we won
- 3:51the biggest championship, and then we wanted again as a sophomore when she was
- 3:54a sophomore, and those guys, and then we started beating their beating their
- 3:58brains in every single game. Then we beat them all the time. Then
- 4:02it was fun to go home, and you know fun meaning to a point
- 4:13you knew you're going to win, but it's not going to be easy and
- 4:15it's not going to be fun while you're doing it. So even going home,
- 4:20I would see a lot of my friends the night before the game.
- 4:24You know, they come over to the hotel, we grab something, you
- 4:26know, go to a bar, and talk about the old days, you
- 4:28know, blah blah blah blah, and and now I don't even do that
- 4:31anymore. Now, I just you know, kind of hang out with the
- 4:38old people that I travel with. And and your bus down last week we
- 4:43had to and we bust down. That was like old school. Yeah yeah,
- 4:46so you can imagine back in the mid eighties, we're going down to
- 4:49Villanova. It's a four and a half hour bus ride, and then you
- 4:53play and you get your butt beat and now you're four hours and a half
- 4:56back all the way back. So yeah, this was like, uh yeah,
- 5:04this was like the old school. Hey, you don't have a plane
- 5:06today, all right, well we'll bust down, but we got a plane
- 5:09for tomorrow night. Right after the game, during the game, there's a
- 5:11phone call. I'm not sure your plane is going to happen, you know,
- 5:15so uh blah blah blah blah blah blah. So you know, you
- 5:18just roll with it. But it's like we we have it so good now.
- 5:24You know, before we'd be sitting in an airport. You have to
- 5:28stay over after the game. You know, we play at Pittsburgh. You
- 5:31know, you you had to win those games because if you lose, you
- 5:34guys stay there all night till the next morning. So you need to win
- 5:39those road games, you know. Now, you know, you go,
- 5:43you play, come home. So we're we're kind of spoiled. We're kind
- 5:46of spoiled. Back then, you had to. It's like Diana said when
- 5:49she came here. She goes, you know, I remember, like,
- 5:54like I was poor in college and I couldn't wait to be a pro and
- 5:59I couldn't wait to go to Europe. And my goal was to be the
- 6:01highest paid player in the history of European basketball, and I was She goes,
- 6:06Now, you know, like I feel sorry for these kids. They
- 6:09don't know what it's like to be poor in high school, I mean in
- 6:12college, I said them, I don't think they feel the same way,
- 6:15dude, But back then we were poor. We would stop on nine ninety
- 6:20five and everybody got like fifteen dollars meal money, So we stopped at that
- 6:27nice restaurant. Everybody put their fifteen dollars in CD would count it, add
- 6:30it all up, and then tell everybody what they could order. All right,
- 6:33how many apps were getting? One? Two, three? All right?
- 6:36U six? You share those three apps? Can I get another?
- 6:42Coke. See these like, uh, can they get water please for them?
- 6:50That was back in It was a different time, man, It was
- 6:54a different time. And now the only reason we exist is to eat.
- 7:00We finished practice, we get on the bus, there's food on the bus,
- 7:06We drive to the airport, there's food on the plane. Then we
- 7:11get to the hotel and there's food at the hotel, and then later there's
- 7:16a snack. So remember when Shabbaz said we starved. He's unbelievable. All
- 7:24right, we'll come back with the final live radio segments. Well, we
- 7:27do have to take a break. I'm keep an eye on that because we
- 7:30do have to be out the final segment on the radio with coaching. Just
- 7:33the moment on Learfield, stay with us.
