- 0:05SPEAKER_00: What's up everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to yet another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor, and this is our show about the intersection of sports and money.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: You know how we get down?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: We need you to subscribe, rate, review.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Five stars only.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And uh we like to once you get that done, uh, we'd like to start with the number of the week.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Interesting number you have today, sir.
- 0:30SPEAKER_03: Interesting number of the week is five thousand five hundred dollars.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I'd like a check for that amount.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, listen, we could all use a little, you could all use$5,500.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Um, what that is, that is the cost of in-state tuition at the University of Maryland for the spring semester.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Not too bad.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Not too bad.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: It's not not terrible, but uh certainly a multiple of what you and I paid with in-state tuition for Ohio State back in the day.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Um but$5,500.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Why is that number important?
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Because if you're a student who attends the Maryland game this weekend, the Maryland football game this weekend, and you stay until the fourth quarter.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, you gotta stay to the fourth quarter.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: You gotta stay until the fourth quarter.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: You can enter a raffle and get your and you could win your spring tuition and have it paid.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: And so that's that first of all, I think it's a great idea, but but it's but the the bigger story is that that's an indictment of the you know Maryland football program.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: They had they had to fire the coach and the team team's pretty bad and and all well.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Uh Maryland is uh Illinois, I think.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: They're playing Illinois.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Who'd they play last week?
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Oregon.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: They beat Oregon, yeah.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so but but I think it's more just to uh make sure the people show up to the game, you know.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: And because you gotta you gotta attract those uh recruits, you gotta attract the the transfer portal people.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: We don't know who their coach is gonna be next year.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So no, they they should be a better job because they're right in the DMV area in DC Maryland, Virginia.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Uh and if you look at the programs around there, whether it's Virginia, Virginia Tech, or Penn State, all those programs have been good.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Uh Maryland should have some uh and and that area produces a ton of athletes.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Maryland can't get hardly any of them, or you know, problem with football is you need more than two, you need a few of them.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And uh, when's the last time Maryland's been good?
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Like nine win good.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, for for years, probably when you and I were like, I really don't remember.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: No, they they were good for like a sh very short stretch, probably about 30 years ago.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Um, but but again, it was it it was so non-memorable that I can't tell you exactly when or or who was on the team, but they were good for like a very sh, very, very short stretch stretch about 30 years ago, I think.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, I have uh I have endeavored it, it was bothering me.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I've got to see.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Uh just take a guess because I'm looking now.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: When's the last time Maryland won nine games?
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: I would guess 1998.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: No, the last time they won nine games was 2010.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, they did.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: Oh, I didn't know.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: When's the last time they won 10 games?
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: That that must have been in the mid-90s.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I believe you are you're you're almost correct.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Uh they went 10-2, 11-3, and 10-3 in 2001-2000.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh, so it was more recent.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:34unknown: Okay.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Another interesting thing about Maryland football is I'm looking, they started playing football in 1917.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Those are the only seasons where they've had consecutive double-digit wins.
- 3:49SPEAKER_03: The early 2000s.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Three, four, seven.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: They've only had seven double-digit win seasons in their entire history.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: The most wins they ever had was 11.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: They've done that twice.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Their best season ever, 11 and 1 in 1976.
- 4:09unknown: Wow.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: So more than you ever wanted to know about Maryland football.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I still think that's a great, listen, that's a great promotion.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: They're gonna get some.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's fantastic.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a great idea.
- 4:18SPEAKER_03: I'm funny about that.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Uh both of uh my kid goes to Ohio State, and he's already become an arrogant bucket.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Meaning, I called him at some game.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: He went to some game this week, I mean this year, and I sent him a text that hey, are you home yet?
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, because I you know, I wasn't sure, whatever, whatever.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: He sends me a text, oh yeah, I left in the third quarter.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: You know.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Because I think it was a blowout.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: It may have been a Maryland game.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: It was a blowout win, so he's just like, Yeah, we left in the third quarter.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: I'm like, dude, I if I left early, I would consider midway through the fourth quarter leaving early.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Anything else was blasphemous.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, that's kids today.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, listen, the college game uh that I went to this year was USC, Oregon, where USC got blasted, lost by 14 points, and uh I stayed till the bitter end.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, see, that's what you're supposed to do.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Um, so if you're a Maryland student, stay till the bitter end.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I would for a chance to get free tuition, it would be worth it.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, maybe even stay within a couple touchdowns of Illinois.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Well, I what I think's gonna happen is you're gonna have a huge number of students attend a game, but none of them are gonna watch it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: That's what I think is gonna happen.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Uh I had a friend of mine, well, I shouldn't say it like that.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Jerry Jones's daughter went to Stanford, Charlotte Jones, and she told me they went to all the Stanford games and never watched them.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Right, of course.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: That's that's what happens.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Um, on to baseball.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm sorry.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: The bottom line for me is if you're a Maryland student, your parents would appreciate you staying through the fourth quarter this week and seeing if you can get some free tuition.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Because if my kid left with free tuition on the line, I'd take his phone.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: Uh the bottom line for me is uh go to the game.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: But if you're an out-of-state student, you pay 21 grand a semester.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: So you don't you only get five grand off that 21 grand, but I'd still go.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, at least that's the cost of a meal plan.
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: But but it's great because the actual uh you know the the actual language or or flyer, whatever it is, that that indicates that that this this promotion actually has a disclaimer on the bottom that said this is this only counts for the value of in-state student tuition, which I think makes this thing a hundred times better.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: You know, I gotta tell you that is a great uh a great idea that somebody in the promotion marketing department had.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And uh they should be getting a raise because uh look at all the attention it's drawn.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, which is the key to marketing, drawing attention.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Uh speaking of attention, have you paid much attention to the World Series this this week?
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: I have.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: I thought it was gonna be great with Milwaukee and Tampa Bay.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: It has not been great, but uh, you know, I think that's more about Milwaukee being outstanding than it is anything else.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think uh, well, we're actually recording right now in the middle of game four um you know of the World Series.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but I thought game three was, you know, I watched game three, the end of game three, where uh Milwaukee took the lead in the 12th inning, hit a home run, and I said, Oh my god, what a great story they're gonna sweep.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: They're gonna have one of the best postseason records in memory.
- 7:36SPEAKER_03: Uh what it's it's a small market team.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: What a great way to go into these negotiations in December where the owners want a salary cap and a really small market team wins, and not only do they win, they win in a dominant fashion, and then of course they blew it in the bottom of the 12th.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: That's how baseball goes, as my man Brian Washington would say.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh the interesting thing is everybody was in a big stink about hey, it's not LA, it's not the Yankees, uh, it's a couple small market teams.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: The ratings are going to be terrible.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: And it turns out that the ratings have not been terrible.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: They're only down, what, 5% from last year?
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're not they're not bad.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: And those also don't underestimate the the draw of the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: That's a big draw, that team.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: That's a big team that has a huge following.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Canada's team.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but also the northern parts of the United States is is uh you know, that's that's a big that's a big draw of a team.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Uh and also, you know, the star power for LA is is you know, you had just shoheotani alone is is a big draw.
- 8:37SPEAKER_03: So the fact that it's only down five, it depends on each game.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: First two games, I think, were five, seven percent, something like that.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: You're right.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: Um, that's pretty impressive.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: But the in the the more impressive thing that I saw was that the sale of Brewer's merchandise following you know it them going to the World Series, according to different metrics, the sale of uh Brewer's merchandise was the most in history post season.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: In history, yeah.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Um well okay, take this out.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: As a big number, just be the most in history.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: But I'm not really sure I'm all that surprised.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: If you're the Milwaukee Brewers fan and you ain't never been to the World Series, you haven't been to the World Series in 40 years.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: So there's a generation of fans who have who weren't born when the last time they went, or they were little bitty kids when they went.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And you're the Brewers, you're not the Yankees, you're not the um the Dodgers, you're not a club that has expectations to go to the World Series every year, not even the Astros.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: So if my team is there, I'm going to get all the gear that's available to me.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Like Ohio State has played in several national championship games.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see.
- 9:57SPEAKER_03: So you want to get you want to get it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that makes that makes sense.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: Now, I I want to show I want to do something.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: Now, do you know about the Milwaukee Brewers logo itself?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: Uh that the M and B is in the hat.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: Nah, you know it.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: It's in the glove.
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: In the glove, yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: In the glove.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Now I I was only aware of that.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know, sometime in the last year.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: But that you know what?
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: I was looking at some uh something on TikTok, and it was doing all logos that hide the name within it.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Like Amazon's got the A to Z in there, and FedEx has got the arrow.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: It's called negative space, right?
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: And in uh and even Toyota's got Toyota written in that little symbol.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's what they say.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: But but it is, but it's it's it's a great logo.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: When you so I didn't know that, and then once they said it, okay, hold on, hold on.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: I couldn't unsee it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And so no, it's a uh oh, you're getting fancy.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I know, look at that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: It's a fantastic logo once you once you understand.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the M is the M is here, and then the B is here, Milwaukee.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: And then the baseball is in the baseball.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: That is now, once I found that, once I saw that, and it's a baseball glove, I'm like, this is like a top five logo, man.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: It's it's an amazing logo.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: Um and it's a uh it's it's it's great for Milwaukee, but I was gonna say it, man.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: If that was my team, if that was my team, I would have number one, I'd have a t-shirt, then I'd have a hoodie, and then I'd probably have a sweatshirt.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not a ball cap guy, but if I were, I'd have a cap.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: I'd have it all because I wouldn't know if they were going here again.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Like I was saying about Ohio State, they've been a few national championships.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: They've won, I think, three in the last 20 years.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: But when they won the last one, I'm still not to the point where I go, oh, they just win every year.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: So when they won and beat Notre Dame, it had been 10 years since they won it.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: So as soon as they won it, man, I was online.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I had I had the sweatshirts coming because I gotta buy two of everything because my son's a buckeye.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: So we had the sweatshirts, the hoodies coming in.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Then we had I bought him a couple t-shirts because he's a t-shirt guy, likes a one-size smaller because he's arrogant like that.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Um then I took the next step, man.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: I had to make sure the wife's not listening.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Because I still had it in the closet.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: I went and bought the uh the only way to describe it is it's like a high school leather jacket.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: But it's but it doesn't have all it's got is Ohio State on the back, uh-huh.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: And it might have Brutus on the front.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: But whatever.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't bought the jacket, man, because I was like, it's winter time, I can still wear it for a couple of months.
- 12:51unknown: Yeah.
- 12:52SPEAKER_03: So I've got gung ho.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've got uh uh a national championship sweatshirt that says we told you so on it.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: That's like something you would have.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: I've got the uh national championship hat.
- 13:06SPEAKER_03: More importantly, I have a pair of matching mugs with the national championship on it and the score of the Ohio State Notre Dame game on it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I got it.
- 13:15SPEAKER_03: I got good stuff.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: So I'm not surprised that the brewers who haven't been there 42 years are leading sales, and um especially when you consider that now we're in the internet age, and no matter where you are, Alex Texas, you could order some Milwaukee Buck Milwaukee Brewers gear in five minutes right now, yeah, and have it at your house tomorrow.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: But but the the the amazing thing is that you've got this is this for the players, this is the best possible result in this World Series.
- 13:49SPEAKER_03: You got the two best teams, they're low payroll teams, they show that the salary cap in baseball doesn't necessarily mean anything because you know if the and and if I'm baseball, if I'm baseball players, I'm gonna be negotiating uh with the owners, and I don't think they're gonna acquiesce to a salary cap.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: I just don't.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: I hope they don't.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: I hope they don't.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Now, here's what I want to hear you because you're you're much more of a money guy than me.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Um so here's what the owners will say because I heard Rob Manfred.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: I read a quote from him about this.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: He goes, Oh, yes, uh, small market teams are doing what they're doing this year.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: This is great, but this is an outlier.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: You know, the Milwaukee Brewers should be in the World Series more than once every 40 years.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And uh his other point was uh, what was his other point?
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: That was his primary point, is that it was an outlier.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: And the other point was that the problem for small market teams is that when they have their young superstars, they got to trade them or let them go because they can't afford to pay you know five years at$35 million a year.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: And so that's why we need a salary cap to help all the teams stay competitive and keep their keep their guys.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, you you you can make that argument, except that if you look over the years at teams that have made the World Series and have succeeded or have made the playoffs, um, and I would say putting teams in the World Series, in especially in baseball, is different because baseball playoffs are very pitcher dependent and can be very quirky.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: So I would I would expand that if I was negotiating on the the players and say, let's look at the broader playoffs, and then let's let's look at the distribution of teams in the bottom half of payrolls who actually make the playoff.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: Then it's a totally different picture.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: That's number one.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: And number number two is um you can actually look at the performance of superstars once they've gotten onto their huge contracts, whether that is um, you know, most recently here in New York, like Francisco Lindor here in New York, or uh, you know, uh and you can actually argue that that doesn't actually matter that much.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: You know, and so I I don't think that's a great argument, um, but and it can certainly be rebutted.
- 16:14SPEAKER_03: So I'm I'm hoping this gives some ammunition to the players.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Oh, it will.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: But but we'll see.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: You know, the pla the the uh CFO of the players association just resigned or just left.
- 16:28SPEAKER_03: And that's that to me is not a good sign because the the the leadership at the MLBPA has had so many problems and so many issues with it that you hope that their representation is strong.
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: I think that's gonna be a big consideration for them as they're you know, as we look at uh, you know, as we as we looked at negotiations starting, probably starting like you know, next week, right after the World Series, are really gonna start.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: Oh no, they'll be they'll be starting quickly just so that everybody knows, you know, here's here's what our primary issues are.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, here's what we got to get resolved because you know, the way I mean baseball won't start again playing until March, if we're lucky, but you know, you're not winter meetings start in like December.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: So I mean we're talking about a six week.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the lockout's gonna happen December 1st.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: So there won't be any of that.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: So you have to the negotiations, as you said, will start pretty quickly.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, and so it'll uh it'll all be interesting.
- 17:26SPEAKER_03: But it's this is a one-issue negotiation.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: It really is.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: This is a one-issue negotiation, which is salary cap.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: So that's why it's gonna be a lockout because the only hope to get the players to acquiesce acquiesce is to lock them out, and as as the owners will say privately, wait for the wives and girlfriends to start complaining about we ain't got no money, right?
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Or how come I can't buy this bag, or how come we can't take this truck, of course.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And the problem with baseball is a lot of dudes got long money, and I think hey, I could be wrong.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Doesn't happen often, but I could be.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Um baseball, like football's high now, football's highest priced players are essentially union cowards.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: They never come out and say anything like, hey, we gotta stick together.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Baseball's highest play players tend to say, hey, the people before us got us this, and we ain't giving it up.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: And so I think that's a that's a big difference.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: And uh baseball players got some long money, and uh their war chest may be uh may be enough to keep them out for a while.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I think what what I fear is gonna happen is there's gonna be, and I hope it doesn't, but the the NBA essentially created a salary cap, even though they pretend they didn't.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: But the NBA essentially created a salary cap under a different name.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: Um, my fear is that baseball will create the equivalent of a salary cap or or something that morphs into the equivalent of a salary cap in the next, you know, for the during the duration of whatever next agreement they sign.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: That's what I think the most likely scenario is.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: So both sides can say they won.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Uh well, let me just say this.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Um bottom line for me is I uh I'm glad the brewers are making all their money, and I hope it leads to uh to uh the union staying strong and being no salary cap.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: But uh, you know, man, the the way I view it is that uh players got to stay strong, and this is the this is the last vestige of of no cap is Major League Baseball.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: If they give in, you know, uh it's kind of a wrap.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh bottom line for me, I agree with you.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Players need to say stay strong.
- 19:45SPEAKER_03: Don't try not to give in on the salary cap and point to the uh English Premier League as arguably one of the most successful leagues in the world.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: They don't have a salary cap and they're doing just fine.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Um on to college football, our favorite sport.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Our favorite sport by far.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Uh something interesting happened this week.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Dante Moore, the Oregon quarterback, ruled out for the rest of the season.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Gone.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Coach Dan Lanning was quick to point out that he's still not recovered from his concussion that he suffered probably about three weeks ago.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: He suffered it at the uh USC game that I attended.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: So that was what, three weeks ago or a month ago?
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: That was end of September, yeah.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: That was a uh that was a cheap shot hit, right?
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was that was I know the celebration was bad.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was it was it was one of those hits that, and you've been to a million football games, it was one of those hits where the stadium just was like, oh my god.
- 20:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah you know, and it was like that kind of it's kind of that sort of it was sort of a two-tone, it's it's what happens is it it gets quiet, right, but you can still hear the muttering underneath.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: You know, that's and that's what it that's what it was in the stadium.
- 21:02SPEAKER_03: It was like, oh my gosh, what just happened?
- 21:05SPEAKER_03: It was it was a it was it was a rough, rough hit.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: But that's what you know he's but now my question is, and I and I don't doubt that the guy's injured.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: Do you think if Oregon was instead of four and three, six and one, you think he'd come back this season or not?
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Um not based uh not based on what you've what Dan Land.
- 21:27SPEAKER_03: You know, there's I haven't I haven't seen it.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: You know, the thing about it is, and you know, there's all different sites, types of concussions and and degrees of it, is when he got hit, he went to that fencing motion instantly.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: He did.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: It was it was terrible.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: That's the thing.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: That makes you think it was really, you know, there's no such thing as a light concussion, but that makes you think it was along more towards the severe end than the not end.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: So I think um um I would I would I would probably guess.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: That college football at that level is much like the NFL, meaning you gotta you gotta complete a series of protocols.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Before you can and with that kind of concussion, and protocols can be anything from balance to light sensitivity to headaches and not all these protocols you gotta go through before you get back on the field.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: And uh it may just be taking them uh a while.
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: It was it was a particularly brutal hit, as I recall, yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: So but the point of all of that is you know, college football is uh as uh I was telling Jeremy before the show is seems to me to get more and more like the NFL in terms of this.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: The quarterback is the most important position on the team.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And now the NFL, problem with NFL, and I've written this column, you know, a thousand times in various ways.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Anytime you have a and we'll we'll use Dallas as an example.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Dak Prescott has a bad season, or you know, his contract is up, and half the fans are like, Well, the Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl, they need to get rid of Dak Prescott, bring in another quarterback.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: And I always write this thing or I say this thing, depending on the platform.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: You can do that.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: You can do that.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: The problem is there's no time limit on your quarterback journey to find the next Dak Prescott or the next whoever.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: And people go, oh no, you just put no, no.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can't work that way.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Green Bay, and you can go from Brett Farr to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: You can be the Dallas Cowboys and go from Tony Romo to Dak Prescott and basically have 20 years of good quarterback play.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or you can go from Peyton Manning to Andrew to nobody, to nobody, and that's the problem.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Like, there's no there's no like we can keep throwing it and we'll like check this out, man.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: I was telling somebody this the other day.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Uh like um Caleb, what's Caleb's last name?
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Caleb Williams?
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Caleb Williams did something recently, and he's like the first Bears quarterback.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: I'm just making this up because I can't remember the stat.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: They have like three consecutive something like that.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: And somebody said, Really?
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: I go, dude, the Bears have not had like an all-pro quarterback since like Bobby Douglas in the 60s.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Even Mike Tomzat wasn't a uh all-pro.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: And you know, Jim McMahon helped him win the Super Bowl, but he wasn't a I mean, it was a yeah, he was he was along for the ride.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or you know, the more common example I use is let's look at the New York Jets.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: After Joe Namath, their franchise quarterback, name the next franchise quarterback the Jets have had.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: They haven't.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: They haven't.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: 50 years.
- 24:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: Name uh, you know, it's the Buffalo Bills are actually the Jets' franchise quarterback is Sam Darnold, but he happens to play for another team.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: No, he's not.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: You know, the Buffalo Bills went from Jim Kelly, and who retired in like 1998.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: To nobody.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: To Josh, Josh uh Allen showed up in like 2017.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: That's 20 years.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, so back to college football.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: So when you bring in a freshman quarterback and say, hey, Pink, we really like what you just put.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: We live really liked you at the Elite 11 competition.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: You've been all state, you're this, you're that.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: We're gonna pay you five million dollars because that's the going rate for quarterbacks.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And uh, we want you to come play for state you.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: And you go, yes, sir, I'd be happy to do that.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I'm do my best, I'm gonna show up, and you show up and you can't play.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: That's a big problem, man, because the booster who funded your five million is looking at me like, Coach Taylor, you didn't know that man couldn't play.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: And because you showed up, these other quarterbacks left, and now you can't play, and the only people behind you is this guy who's empty, and this guy who's but but but what's when what's happening because of that is that the premium now is on transfers that have shown that they can play in smaller colleges or or not as high profile programs.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: And the classic one this year is this guy out of Oregon State, uh, what's his name?
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: Braden Atkinson, I think.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: He's he's gonna command huge money in the portal.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: And if you're a big time program, are you gonna pay this guy who's proven that he can play, you know, Oregon State schedule, which is okay.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: Or are you gonna get a high school five-star guy?
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: You're gonna have to, you got you gotta go with uh Oregon State guy.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: You have to, but they each got they each got issues.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: He's about my height, yeah.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: So he's gotta like uh Indiana's quarterback Hoover.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: He was terrific at TCU.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: But again, you're asking people to step up a level of competition, right?
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: And everybody can't make the step.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, so you know, somebody like uh Shamless um can show up from uh, you know, directional U and show up at Ole Miss and make the step.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but everybody can't make the step to the next level of competition, or they can't make it to the pressure that comes with.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: Um I was telling me, uh, and they've told me this for years, but like with five-star quarterbacks or five-star players, the reason that's such a high bust rate is you're five-star, okay?
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: But that might have been because you were just bigger, faster, stronger than everybody in your region.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: You've been dominant.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: Nobody, how about this?
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Nobody on the first day of practice is like you're a defensive tackle.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: And you go up against a you're at Alabama, you've been a five-star, you show up against three-time All-American Taylor in the first practice, and he picks you up and throws you over there.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: And the coach goes, I thought you were a five-star, Bubba.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: You can't play.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: And that's the first time you've ever been picked up, slammed down, and embarrassed.
- 28:18SPEAKER_03: But this is the issue, this is the issue with a lot of five-star running backs, is they they never really got hit in high school.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: You know, and certainly not by certainly, and they take their first couple of games, they're getting hit and tackled for really the first time in their careers because they've been able to run over people or run around people, and that you can separate the running backs almost immediately.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's the problem in college football.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: It's it starts with Dante Moore, it goes to Atkinson at um Oregon State, and then it's a it's a problem because nobody's got any quarterback depth, just like the NFL.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: Right, and we'll we'll well we'll talk we'll talk about that, you know, when we talk about Ohio State as well.
- 28:58SPEAKER_03: But yeah.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: And so you wonder, you know, these programs, nobody's dumb.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: So you wonder what the solution will end up being.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: How will you get?
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, when you have to basically do like Oregon, you're just gonna have to pay two quarterbacks, and that means you're gonna go light somewhere else.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, because when they paid Ryola, everybody was like, You got Dante Moore, what are you paying Rayola for?
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: And basically, that's before we find out Rayola had forgotten how to play.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was, oh, we've already got our next guy in line, but see, now here we go.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: You pay Ryola, and now if he's not what you thought he was, yeah, what do you do at quarterback?
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: It's it's that that and that's that's what's happening now.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: Not only that, but what do you do at quarterback when you have to pay these guys all this money and he can't play?
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: What do you do the next couple of seasons when you've signed him up for you know a couple of years?
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: It's a big deal, dude.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: It's a it's a huge issue because um, and this has been going on for a while, ever since the transfer thing kind of opened up.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: You have two two quality guys competing.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: The guy who loses says, Hey, I'm not gonna be a backup here because I think I'm I'm better.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: I should start.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: Let me go find a situation where I can go start and prove myself.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Dwayne Hassan's Joe Burrow, and it's a classic one.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: But it happens every year with several different teams.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: It's Ohio State.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: Ohio State, Kyle McCord, Lincoln Keenholes for the last couple of years.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so you know, it's uh so nobody's got any depth at quarterback.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: So when your guy goes down, you don't have a lot of options to pick from because there's some like and uh there's somewhere else starting, and so it has made college football uh wilder than even anticipated because um NIL has just changed the whole landscape.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: You know, it's funny, and I don't know where you stood on this.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: When NIL showed up, did you think, oh, this just means Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, USC are gonna get all the players now because they can afford to pay them, or did you think it would be like it is where instead of five programs getting 50 guys, like 25 programs got two guys?
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: I thought it would be somewhere in the middle.
- 31:19SPEAKER_03: I thought it would be the big state schools or the schools with lots of money would separate themselves from everybody else, you know, and that that's what that's really what I thought would happen.
- 31:30SPEAKER_03: But I didn't think the parody would be what it is, it's much wider than I thought.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: But also the mindset of a college football fan is gonna have to change.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Because I I'm used to if Ohio State doesn't go like 10 and 2 or 11 and one, it's like a disaster of a season.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: In five to ten years, if you go nine and three or eight and four, it's fine.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: Because that's just what college football is, it's gonna be more similar to the pros.
- 31:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, dude, you may have hit on the point right there.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: And that's because the talent is dispersed.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Um, and because you don't have all the talent.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: It's it's dispersed, but it's also mobile.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: And it never was mobile before, you know?
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: So and um, you know, I think that's the best way to look at it.
- 32:14SPEAKER_00: You know, you're used to your team winning 50 to nothing.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: You got to be happy with 2412 or 2414.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: It's a totally different, it's a totally different world now.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, you look at like I you look at the classic team for this is Alabama.
- 32:29SPEAKER_03: That that alumni base doesn't have as much money as the Texas teams or the these huge Big Ten schools, um, you know, or these huge Pac, you know, former Pac-12 schools, you know, these huge state schools have big alumni bases and big money, but Alabama doesn't.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: And so I actually think Alabama does well for what it's got now.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: But Alabama doesn't have the players anymore.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Alabama's second and third string would probably have been the second or third best team in the country up until maybe 10 years ago, and that just doesn't happen anymore.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: No, it's um I think that's the best point, man.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: You just have to come to grips with a new reality for if you've been a uh blue blood college football power with Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Clemson's really feeling it already.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Well, that's true.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: But but the the other thing, too, is that's why I think in it, I haven't seen this much.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: That's why I think the 2014 playoff is actually happening.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Because you're gonna have to, you know, it's gonna be the there you look at it this year.
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: There's three undefeated teams right now, and there probably will be zero undefeated teams by the end of the year, right?
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: Uh Miami might be able to stay unbeaten.
- 33:41SPEAKER_03: UCLA will lose, and Utah will lose, right?
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: So you're gonna have no unbeaten teams, and the difference between the teams, how do you pick from one to 12 among these teams?
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: The difference in talent, and and there's gonna be this team beat this team, but then they lost to this team that beat the other team.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: So there's gonna be no consistency.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: So I think that's the to me, money's the impetus for the 2014 playoff.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: There's no question.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: But the other thing, too, is that because the difference between number one and number 12 now is not nearly as different as as great as it was even three years ago.
- 34:19SPEAKER_03: The difference between one and 24 will probably be about the same as the difference between one and 12 was maybe 10 years ago.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: So that's what I think is happening here for the college football playoff.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, bottom line for me is this quarterback conjury, quandary, it's made college football have even more parity than I could have imagined.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Because nobody's got depth to survive injury or poor play from their quarterback.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but but bottom line for me, it's uh quarterback, quarterback play is become, as you point out, very thin in terms of depth.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: And also, if you're at a less premier program that doesn't have a lot of money, you're gonna lose that quarterback, which to me turns it around and says the premium on finding the best coach now is much greater than what it used to be.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Because the best coach used to be the best recruiter, and that's not that's not what's the most important skill set right now.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: Um, that's a great point, man.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: We might need to talk about that on another day.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: Because some friend of mine was saying coaching, the actual coaching matters more now than it's ever mattered before.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: No question.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: No question.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: And it's because if my guys are just better than yours, then you know it is what it is.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: And that's why that's why you see, you know, that's what you're seeing now with Dabo Sweeney.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: That's probably why Nick Saban was smart enough to get out of the game, even though he's you know, and but that's what you're also seeing with you know, coaches like Bob Chesney at at UCLA or Kurt Signetti at Indiana, which is they're really good coaches.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: And the premium on coaching is is far greater.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: When you look at the NFL and you look at the parity in the NFL, the difference is the difference, especially for quarterbacks.
- 36:09SPEAKER_03: If quarterbacks land at a place with a good coach, that's the best situation for them.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: So I think, you know, not to belabor this topic, but I think if I'm a college quarterback, it's not only where I'm gonna get paid the most money, I need to get in a pro I need to get in a program where I'm actually gonna have the best coaching as well.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: And I think that's so that the premium is gonna premium is gonna shift a lot to the actual X's and O's of coaching as opposed to being the great recruiter.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: No, I would uh I would get down with that.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Now on to the uh big topic of the week.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Who the hell is starting a quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes?
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Um and you know, man, uh everybody wants to play the backup quarterback until the backup quarterback has to play.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: Most popular guy in the team until he plays, right?
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Hey, so now we'll see.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: I don't even know Fehey's first name.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: What's Faehee?
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Luke Fehey from California or Tavion St.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Clair, who's the big star study five-star guy who's been on campus for a couple years.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: Um, I trust in Ryan Day to pick the best dude because he seems to know what he's doing with quarterbacks.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: So I haven't really paid much attention.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Um, although I'll share some inside information with you that I got from a source this week.
- 37:24SPEAKER_03: Uh and I I know I know and I know the source.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: This is not classic Taylor reporting.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Because this would, if you call this into your editors, they go, This is not good enough to write.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: We're not going with this.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: So, this is secondhand information from a source at Ohio State who said they're going with Fayhey because in fall practice leading up to the season, he made fewer mistakes with the football, meaning he protected it better than uh your boy St.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: Clair in terms of fumbles, interceptions.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: He was also better at getting the team in and out of the huddle.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: And that, you know, just the whole operation was a little bit smoother.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: Now, take that for what it's worth.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Watch him throw four picks this weekend, and uh, you know, my inbox will fill up.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: So exactly.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: Whatever it is, you're gonna be wrong.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: That's that's all we know, right?
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: That you whatever whatever we say we're wrong.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: The but let me here's here's a question for you, okay?
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: This this is where we are right now.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: Ohio State is six and one.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: They got you know the next five games, which a couple of them look pretty tough ahead of them.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: All your quarterbacks are healthy, okay?
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: Which of these four gives you the best chance to win the national title?
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: Tavian St.
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: Clair?
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: Probably not.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: Luke Fahy?
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: Maybe, but probably not.
- 38:51SPEAKER_03: We haven't seen him.
- 38:52SPEAKER_03: Julian Sand?
- 38:55SPEAKER_03: Lincoln Keenholz.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: What's your answer, Mr.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: Taylor?
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: Now that you've seen Lincoln Keenholz play at Louisville, and you've seen Lincoln Keenholz able to run three more than three yards, and say hell Keenholz.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: Because he's got a stronger arm, and while he's not a pocket passer, Keene Holtz can make something out of nothing.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: He can create something that turns.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh, he in doing that, he's also probably more turnover prone.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Um, and you gotta protect the ball.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: But Keene Holtz can help you win more than one way.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: Keene Holtz, sorry, sorry, Keene Holtz is Will Howard and Kyle McCord is Julian Sand to me.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: That's sort of that's now here's the question.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Would Ryan Day design an offense that let Keenholtz do his thing?
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: As long as he got the ball to Jeremiah Smith, for sure.
- 40:03SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 40:04SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm saying.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: Like if you had Keenholz, you'd want a little more option, a little more read option.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: If if I here's I also believe that if Lincoln Keenholz were on the team this year, and this goes to the backup quarterback argument.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: For people who don't know, Lincoln Keenholz, he almost beat out Julian Saiyan last year for the quarterback job.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: And now you see what he's now and now he's now doing, he's he's doing uh you know having a really good season at Louisville right now.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: Um if Lincoln Keenholz, if this was 10 years ago, you would go to the back of Lincoln Keenholz right now, right?
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: You would be fine.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: You wouldn't even you wouldn't even think twice about it.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: You know, it'd be going from uh Braxton Miller to JT Barrett, you'd be fine.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: Um but I also believe very strongly that because Keenholtz isn't on the team this year, I don't think Julian Sain has the same pressure that he did last year to perform.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: Um I I would believe he doesn't have the same pressure, but I don't know.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: Do you need pressure to perform?
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: It's not like he's I don't know.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: That may not be fair, but but I think he's he would be more acutely aware of the backup quarterback than he is now.
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: Okay, how about that?
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and so I I look at this, and I I I have to say, you know, I was thinking about this.
- 41:31SPEAKER_03: If if you were going from Julian Sane to Lincoln Keenholz right now, and Julian Sain is a great player, and I don't I'm not you know, he's a young guy, I'm not gonna badmouth the guy at all, but but if you look at it, I would be more comfortable going to Lincoln Keenholz now than Julian Sain in any case.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: But again, this is the backup quarterback statement.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: We're not playing it last night, so we never saw him, we never saw him make any of the mistakes that he might have made.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: And that's true, and that's the other thing, and I say this about Kyle McCord, and I say this about Lincoln Keenholz at Louisville.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: Hey, bro, there's a big ass difference.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I said that between playing quarterback at Syracuse, that's true.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: Playing quarterback at Ohio State.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: The big ass difference between playing quarterback at Louisville and playing quarterback at Ohio State, right?
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: Because every and that's true, because every game that Ohio State plays, it's the biggest game of the season for the other team.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: And there's innate pressure because you're at Ohio State, um, that that that you don't face at other places.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: At Louisville, if you lose four games, it ain't the end of the world.
- 42:37SPEAKER_00: If you lose three, it's not the end of the world.
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, nine and three?
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: Well, what bowl game are we at?
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, we we made the playoffs?
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: It's like we didn't get a bye.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: We lost two games, we lost one.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: What are y'all doing?
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: So it's a whole different mindset.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Um I I am sort of for whatever reason, I'm sort of probably you ain't been on saying you ain't been on saying's uh I think he's a I think he's a really, really good player.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: I don't know if he's a quarterback that you can win a national title with.
- 43:11SPEAKER_03: I just don't.
- 43:12SPEAKER_03: But he's a he's a really, really he's he's probably one of the best, you know, five to seven quarterbacks in the country.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Very accurate, but I don't know if he's a quarterback you would you win a national title with.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: I thought you could win one with him last year.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: I didn't think you could win with him this year because he had to me hadn't played as good this year as he did last year for whatever reason.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Fair.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: Um you know, and Boz showed up this year, and you know, he's a uh he I think you're right.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: He's a really good quarterback.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: He's just limited in some things he can do.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: Um so I'm I'm of the opinion that I maybe maybe I'm self delusional, which is very likely the case, but I think they're gonna be fine with Faye.
- 43:56SPEAKER_03: You know, and I think you're gonna be fine with Fayhey, and they're gonna have some power.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Packages for St.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Clair to come in that are probably going to be more running packages.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: And I think they're going to be just fine.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: I'm not going that far.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: I got to see him play.
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: And to me, especially because you're on the road against USC, doesn't matter how good USC is or isn't.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: Especially him, because he's from California.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Everybody who grows up knows USC's got a great football program.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to give I'm going to give him the same test that I give everybody in his situation, whether I'm covering them as a reporter or whether I'm watching as a fan.
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: And this is all I care about.
- 44:37SPEAKER_00: In the first quarter and a half, does it look too big for?
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: And if it doesn't, then I ain't going to worry about it.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: If it does, I'd be like.
- 45:22SPEAKER_00: Get yourself a new girlfriend because the starting quarterback got a different girlfriend than the backup quarterback.
- 45:27SPEAKER_00: And now let's see what it looks like.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: But you know, if it were me, and I'm basing this off of my own personal career.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: When I got my big opportunities, I was ready for them and I was like, yo, let's bring it on, let's go.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:46SPEAKER_00: I wasn't, oh my God, I've always wanted this, but now, whoo, boy, what if I do, what if I fail?
- 45:53SPEAKER_00: What if I don't do this?
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: It's it's the old it's the old kind of Mario Andretti quote, which I'll butcher, which is that they said, how do you know when you're racing well?
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: And you know, he's an auto, you know, car racer.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: He's dating myself again, but he's a car uh auto racer for for many years.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: Great, great, great, great driver.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: Um, and they say he said, When I'm in control during the race, I drive okay.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: When I'm out of control, I kind of drive badly.
- 46:19SPEAKER_03: But when I'm slightly out of control, that's when I'm at the best.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: And for a second, you know, for a quarterback who comes into a game, if you've got the confidence, it's not going to be in, you're not going to be in control.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: It's going to you're going to be, but if you're slightly out of control and you can handle that, I think you'll be fine.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: And the actual quote, yeah.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, something like that.
- 46:43SPEAKER_03: But he's he's he's that that sounds right, but but it's more it's more when he sort of expands on it, he's basically saying that.
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but but that's but that's what's some age.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and and that is and and that's right.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: Like when you get into these situations, sometimes I've been in situations where I just choked.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: That's happened to me, but I've also been in situations where I was like, you know what?
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: I I'll figure it out.
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: So you get it.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: This quote makes perfect sense to me in terms of the two quarterbacks we've been talking about.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: Julian Sain to me this year looked like he's playing under control.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Like I don't want to make any big mistakes, so I'm instead of locking up, I'll take a sack, or I'll, you know, I'm playing under control.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing anything too badly.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Lincoln Keenholz seems like, and Louisville seems like he's almost on the verge of going out of control all the time.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: I totally agree with you.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:43SPEAKER_00: And uh he's got 10 TDs, three interceptions.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: He's also run for 10 TD.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: Um, now I don't know what their record is.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: They're probably four and three or something like that.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're they're they're they've lost a couple of they they started off strong and they they've lost a few games, but yeah, three and two.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so yeah, so and you're right.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: Louisville football is very different than Ohio State football.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: It's a totally different, it's a totally different animal.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: So if you get somebody in you, you also, you know, you also can get somebody who jumps into a game like and you go, uh look at look at Dak Prescott.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, oh, when when he went to the Cowboys, oh, I remember Dak Prescott's preseason to me is still one of the most memorable preseasons of any football player in the last decade.
- 48:30SPEAKER_03: Because you looked at him and you went, oh, he can play.
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you knew you knew it, you knew it immediately.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: And you said, Yeah, it's preseason.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: I want to see him do it in the first couple of games.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: And he said, Oh, first couple of games.
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: Now, what Dak Prescott had is what every Ohio State quarterback, whether it's Julian Sand or Luke Fehey or Tavian St.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Clair is going to need, which is a running game.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: And if Ohio State doesn't have a running game, it doesn't matter.
- 48:53SPEAKER_03: It doesn't matter to the quarterback.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: Right, right, right.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: I would agree with that.
- 48:55SPEAKER_00: They gotta they gotta be able to run the ball and uh take some pressure off the young fella, whoever the young fella is, and uh let them do their thing.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: So bottom line for me, I can't wait to see whether uh let's say it's Fehey for now.
- 49:11SPEAKER_00: Whether Fehey comes in there and meets the moment.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: And uh it won't take long to see, but if he can meet the moment, they'll be fine.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: Buckeyes win or not, in your in your mind.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man, because I hate to fall out if they lose.
- 49:26SPEAKER_00: So, yes, buckeyes win.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: Uh it won't be easy because they're working in the new quarterback.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: But uh uh and I think their defense, uh, you know, the other thing is everybody else gotta help them out.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: And they know this, and so I think you'll see a concerted effort.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: And so I'd say the Buckeyes win, and nothing's easy this year.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: I say it's probably 24 to uh 17.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Uh bottom line for me is Ohio State wins.
- 49:56SPEAKER_03: I think Faye will, to use your words, will meet the moment.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: But interestingly enough, and I sent you this earlier, you can get tickets to the USC game uh on secondary markets.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: You can get 60, 70, 80, 100 tickets to on the secondary market, which says to me it's gonna be a big Ohio State crowd there.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: That'll help make a big difference.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: That'll help.
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: No, that'll help for a difference.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: Real top.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, so for uh, you know, so y'all chew on that for a while.
- 50:27SPEAKER_00: Don't forget to uh subscribe, rate, review.
- 50:31SPEAKER_00: Five stars only.
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: He's Jeremy Peak.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: I'm Josh I Taylor.
- 50:35SPEAKER_00: We'll talk to you next week on the bottom line on sports.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: All right, everybody.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: We'll see you next week.
