- 0:05We got some good TV speakers, don't we?
- 0:10Hey, good morning everybody, welcome to Saint City.
- 0:12If I don't know you, my name is Brandon.
- 0:13I'm so glad that you are here today.
- 0:16We're going to open up the book of Joshua today in God's Word.
- 0:18So if you got a Bible, turn to Joshua or go to the table
- 0:21contents and find if you don't have a Bible, we actually have
- 0:23one in a seat nearby in front of you on the floor there.
- 0:26And it's on page 179 of that Bible.
- 0:29When I get up to talk, when anybody gets up here to preach
- 0:31at Saint City, what we do each and every week is we open up
- 0:34God's words. Why?
- 0:36Because our words aren't all that important.
- 0:39But like the Apostle Peter said, like to whom else would we turn
- 0:42that has the words of life? And we believe that that book
- 0:46that is on the floor there in your hands today, guess what?
- 0:49It has the very words of eternal life itself.
- 0:53That immortality is found in the belief in Jesus.
- 0:56And we believe that you can have that and experience that for
- 0:59yourself. And so we turn to his words for
- 1:01life in our life with Jesus. And so we open that up and just
- 1:04a moment, I'll meet you there. What I'm realizing right now in
- 1:08my life is that sometimes you just have to risk it all, OK?
- 1:13You just got to you got to send it.
- 1:14You got to risk it all to have it.
- 1:15Some of you, like I'm looking at the college students right now.
- 1:17I'm like, you just got to risk it and go ask that girl for her
- 1:19number. You know, I'm saying you just
- 1:20got to risk it, but I was watching Deal or No Deal
- 1:24recently just as like I was conjuring up this image of
- 1:27risking it all. I don't know if you remember
- 1:28this show, but it was hosted by the bald headed beauty known as
- 1:32Howie. He's our bald king, right?
- 1:33We love him in the bald world. He pulls it off.
- 1:36But Howie, what he'll do is he does something dramatic all the
- 1:39time and Deal or No Deal, Deal or No deal's this game show
- 1:42where you have a briefcase beside you and there's like 2530
- 1:47briefcases before you. And you have to decide if the
- 1:49value of what's in your briefcase and the numbers that
- 1:53you know that are worth those briefcases.
- 1:55You're like, hey, is this briefcase going to be worth more
- 1:58than either the briefcases that are out there or the deal from
- 2:01the banker? And so you work your way through
- 2:03and you're like, hey, what is my briefcase going to be worth
- 2:06taking that offer or grabbing one of those briefcases?
- 2:10And you do this again and again and again and again.
- 2:12What will happen is in the show is how he does something super
- 2:14dramatic. He'll look at you and he's like,
- 2:17everything in life has a turning point.
- 2:19Is this yours? Are you going to take the
- 2:22$500,000 offer or are you going to bet that you have the
- 2:25$1,000,000 case? And then inevitably they'll
- 2:28like, open up their case and it's like a $5 case.
- 2:30And you're like, oh, my gosh, the anxiety of just turning down
- 2:33a half, $1,000,000 for five. Yeah, sometimes you got to risk
- 2:37it, right? You got to risk it all to have
- 2:39it all. And the crowd, as he's chanting
- 2:42that, he'll be like, hey, crowd, what?
- 2:44What you guys who've seen the show, you know it.
- 2:45He'll be like, hey, crowd, should they risk it all?
- 2:48And the crowd will like chant, and they'll get really into it.
- 2:52And sometimes the risk is worth the reward.
- 2:54They're like, hey, that's that deal's only worth $20,000.
- 2:58There's 17 cases up there worth more than $17,000.
- 3:01I am not taking that deal. What happened spiritually is
- 3:05something similar at times, I believe.
- 3:07And it's the problem that many of us face each and every week
- 3:11is that many of us are unsure or unclear if going all in, if
- 3:15risking it all for Jesus is actually worth it.
- 3:20Is it worth risking it all for Jesus Christ?
- 3:25Is it worth it? Is it going to be something
- 3:29we're look back on with regret? Is it going to be something that
- 3:33we years from now look back on and go, wow, I made a dumb
- 3:36decision by giving more of my life to Jesus, risking it all on
- 3:40the reality that he died on a cross, he rose again and he
- 3:44ascended to heaven never to die again.
- 3:46Is that worth risking my whole life on?
- 3:50Is it worth risking my image and my career?
- 3:53Is it worth risking my finances? Is it worth risking it all on
- 3:57Jesus Christ? Am I willing to bank my life on
- 4:01Him and His claims? I think we find ourselves asking
- 4:06that question. I think we find a character
- 4:08right here in Joshua chapter 2 that was asking a similar
- 4:12question. The central question for today
- 4:15that I want us to focus in on together is this, does faith in
- 4:18Jesus mean I have to risk it all?
- 4:21It's a question Rahab, our main character, is going to be asking
- 4:24herself, and it's a question we have to find an answer for, for
- 4:27ourselves together. In fact, that is my goal this
- 4:29morning is that you would leave here with clarity and with
- 4:33confidence and with conviction to an answer to that question.
- 4:38So let's go to God's Word, Joshua chapter 2.
- 4:41But before we do, actually I just want to pray for us as a
- 4:44church family as we come before God's Word.
- 4:46Will I just be able to pray for us as a church family before we
- 4:49go to God's Word? Would you join me right now?
- 4:51Lord, here we are as people here in Tempe, AZ asking and
- 4:57believing God, that you can still speak, you can still move
- 5:01in hearts. And so, Lord, I pray and I ask
- 5:04God that you would shake, shake us.
- 5:09You'd shake us from whatever apprehension, whatever obstacle,
- 5:15whatever interferes with us living a life of worship unto
- 5:19you, whatever prevents us from having faith in you.
- 5:23Oh God, would you give us great faith today for the person who
- 5:27has unbelief? Lord, would the simple prayer be
- 5:31I believe, but help my unbelief and God would you make me as a
- 5:36messenger so small and your message so big that people would
- 5:41hear and experience the glory of who Jesus Christ is and what
- 5:45he's done for their life in Jesus name, Amen.
- 5:48Joshua chapter 2 verse one says this and Joshua, who is the
- 5:51successor to Moses, who is the new leader of the people of
- 5:55Israel. He, the son of Nun, sent two men
- 5:58secretly from a city that I would like for you guys to
- 6:01pronounce. Actually, if you have your
- 6:03Bible, you're laughing because the city Hashitim, as spies
- 6:06saying, go view the land, go view the land, especially a city
- 6:10called Jericho. And they went and came into the
- 6:13House of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and lodged there.
- 6:18And it was told, the king of Jericho, behold, men of Israel
- 6:21have come here tonight to search the land.
- 6:23Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab saying, Bring out the men
- 6:27who have come to you who entered your house, for they have come
- 6:30to search out all the land. But the woman had taken the two
- 6:35spies, the men and he, and she'd hidden them.
- 6:38She said, true, the men came to me, but I did not know where
- 6:40they were from. And when the gate was out to be
- 6:41closed at dark, the men went out.
- 6:43I do not know where the men went.
- 6:45Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.
- 6:48But she had brought them up to the roof and hit them with the
- 6:50socks of flax, that she had laid an order on the roof.
- 6:53So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as
- 6:57the Fords, and the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone
- 7:00out. Let's stop right there and let's
- 7:01ask ourselves the next question. If we're asking ourselves the
- 7:04question this morning of is Jesus worth banking my life
- 7:08around? Then let's ask ourselves this.
- 7:10Do we realize the risk of staying?
- 7:13Like what is the risk of staying put where we are?
- 7:19I think a lot of times when people are considering Jesus,
- 7:21when they're considering their faith in him, they are realizing
- 7:24the risk of going all in on being a Christian.
- 7:27But they are not realizing the risk of actually staying in the
- 7:30space and in the mentality in the lifestyle that they
- 7:33currently find themselves in. That there's actually a risk of
- 7:37staying put, of holding on to your briefcase just as much as
- 7:41there is grabbing a new one or taking the deal.
- 7:47I think we see in this first initial section here 3
- 7:51unavoidable spiritual laws that Rahab discovers for herself and
- 7:56that is true for us. The first unavoidable spiritual
- 7:59law is that judgement is coming. Judgement is coming.
- 8:05Rahab. Before the men lay down, she
- 8:07came up to mum in verse 8. Now she came up to them on the
- 8:09roof and said to them, I know that the Lord has given you the
- 8:13land and that the fear of you has fallen upon us and that all
- 8:18the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.
- 8:22Rahab is realizing something that the people of Canaan, her
- 8:25people, guess what judgment is coming for them.
- 8:30These people, these Canaanites, they're child sacrificers.
- 8:35They are evil, wicked people. Herself, her career, not exactly
- 8:42an honorable one. She's a prostitute, The oldest
- 8:45profession they call it right? She is deeply aware that
- 8:49judgement is coming, not just for her, but for all the people
- 8:52of Jericho, and that she is recognizing that.
- 8:57Wait a second, this God who is with the Israelites?
- 9:00Everywhere the Israelites go, guess what?
- 9:02The people melt before them. The land is theirs.
- 9:06If their God says they have it, they get it.
- 9:10And judgement is coming for every single person in Jericho.
- 9:16Now that is not only true for Rahab, that is a spiritual law
- 9:20that is true of the world. Romans 3 says that nobody is
- 9:24righteous, no, not one, because of the reality that each and
- 9:28every single one of us was born in sin and chooses to sin,
- 9:32therefore is worthy of God's judgment that we don't just
- 9:36stand accused, we stand condemned because of our sin and
- 9:40we are in deep need of salvation.
- 9:43And Rahab realizes something. She realizes the second
- 9:46spiritual law that I can't save myself.
- 9:50Not only is judgement coming, but Rahab realizes something.
- 9:53She's like, wait, these Israelites are about to come
- 9:55into our city, they're about to take over.
- 9:57And sure, I could stand the post of my house with a sword, and
- 10:03that's not going to go so well. I'm like picturing verbal meme
- 10:06right now. I'm like picturing Jon Snow and
- 10:08he's like, got all the army coming at him and he's got the
- 10:10sword raised. Like, that's Rahab trying to
- 10:13save herself. It's just not going to work.
- 10:15It is a suicide mission to try to save yourself.
- 10:18And she realizes it. Not only is the judgement
- 10:22coming, Rahab is deeply aware of the reality.
- 10:26She can't save herself. Once again, that's not just true
- 10:33for Rahab. That is true for every single
- 10:35one of us. That staying put is fatal.
- 10:43That it is a horrifying thing to fall into the hands of a holy
- 10:47God. Staying put is dangerous.
- 10:52I've never lived in Florida because I am deathly afraid of
- 10:55hurricanes. We get all the perks of the
- 10:57sunshine here in Arizona, none of the natural disaster, thanks
- 11:01be to God. But if I were to live in
- 11:03Florida, I could tell you how I'd operate.
- 11:05I would not be the kind of person who fled hurricanes
- 11:08because I'm the skeptic by nature.
- 11:11It'd be like, hey, time to board up your windows.
- 11:13Time to run. I'd be like, meh, we'll risk it
- 11:16for the biscuit. We'll stay here.
- 11:19And I can tell you with certainty, as I look over my
- 11:21wife Maddie, she's like, we would absolutely not be those
- 11:22people. We would be going to Georgia,
- 11:24we'd be going to Mississippi. We'd go somewhere other than
- 11:26Florida. I know this is true because in
- 11:29college often times my fire alarm would go off and I lived
- 11:33on the 15th floor of my dorm and on the 15th floor of my dorm at
- 11:373:00 AM when the fire alarm went off, I never went downstairs.
- 11:43If, if, if this is how it ends, so be it.
- 11:46I'm I'm called to die right here and now staying put though in
- 11:50Florida, staying put in my dorm had danger to it.
- 11:56And I'm concerned for some of you today.
- 11:58I'm concerned that you're not realizing the risk of staying
- 12:01put where you are spiritually, that you think that staying
- 12:06where you are with Jesus is enough, that there is no danger
- 12:10in just letting him be a part of your life.
- 12:17If Jesus is not Lord of it all, he is not Lord at all.
- 12:22Listen to me closely. Staying put has grave
- 12:25consequences. Judgment is coming.
- 12:32You can't save yourself. But here's the third spiritual
- 12:35law. God must be kind to us.
- 12:41He has to be kind. He has to be gracious.
- 12:46He has to make a way where there is no way, otherwise we are
- 12:51stuck in the risk, stuck with the grave consequences.
- 12:56God has to be kind to us, otherwise the risk of staying
- 13:01put will leave us without hope. So my second question for you
- 13:08guys, is this a God worth risking it all on?
- 13:12If I'm you and I'm in the seat today and I'm like wondering if
- 13:15where I'm at with Jesus and I'm thinking to myself, hey, what
- 13:18does faith in him look like in my everyday life?
- 13:21Will I be asking myself that question?
- 13:23Is this God worth risking it all on?
- 13:25Will I regret it? Will I think back and wonder if
- 13:29it was worth it? Well, I think Rahab thinks he's
- 13:32worth it. I think He gives us 5
- 13:34attributes. We learn about God in verses 9
- 13:36through 11. She said to the men, I know that
- 13:40the Lord has given you the land. The first thing we learn about
- 13:43God is He is in charge. Another word for that is He's
- 13:46sovereign. He is sovereign.
- 13:50He rules over the land. That land, the promised land is
- 13:53actually God's. Jericho might inhabit it, but
- 13:57they do not own it. They are renters from God
- 13:59Himself and He's decided no longer is it yours.
- 14:03You are abusing the land that I gave you.
- 14:05You are not operating in holiness.
- 14:08You are not reflecting my image, human beings.
- 14:11So guess what? I'm going to give it to my
- 14:13people, the Israelites. He is in charge.
- 14:16It is His land to give. He is sovereign.
- 14:19He is in charge. The second thing we learned is
- 14:22that He is powerful. Look back at verse 9.
- 14:25The Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has
- 14:29fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land will
- 14:34melt away before you. Rahab realizes something that
- 14:40when the Israelites fight, they do not lose.
- 14:44Their God is the undisputed champ of winning battles, and
- 14:52their hearts melt because of it. They cower in fear.
- 15:01They're hoping that that God, the Jericho people are hoping
- 15:04that God will change his mind because they know if this battle
- 15:07starts, it's a battle they're going to lose.
- 15:11I mean, look what he she says next, verse 10 for we have heard
- 15:14how the Lord, she calls him Yahweh.
- 15:16By the way, God's personal name, recognizing that she actually
- 15:19believes in him, doesn't just know about him, but actually
- 15:22believes these things to be true about him.
- 15:24He dried up the water of the Red Sea.
- 15:27Pause. He dried up the water of the Red
- 15:33Sea. How many seas have you looked
- 15:37at, spoken to and dried up? None.
- 15:43I imagine you could even look at a puddle and let that happen.
- 15:50God looked at the Red Sea in Exodus and he said part.
- 15:55He's that powerful. If God can do that, what can he
- 16:02do to the city of Jericho? That's what Rahab's feeling.
- 16:07If you're that powerful, if your God is that strong, we're in big
- 16:13trouble. Not only do we learn that about
- 16:17God, we also learn that he is big.
- 16:20So the Israelites, what they did to the 2 Kings and the Amorites,
- 16:24Rayon the Jordan to see Han and AOG, whom you devoted to
- 16:26destruction. I'm in verse 11 now.
- 16:28And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted and there was no
- 16:31spirit left in any man because of you.
- 16:34For the Lord your God, He is God.
- 16:38Where? In the heavens above and on the
- 16:41earth below. What is she saying?
- 16:43She's saying every other God that I've heard of isn't this
- 16:47God. They're all ants compared to
- 16:52him. So what happens when you feel
- 16:56really, really small? Your heart melts.
- 16:58There is no courage to fight because you're no longer
- 17:01fighting the people of Israel. You are fighting against God
- 17:04himself. And he is big.
- 17:10However big you think God is, he's bigger.
- 17:14He is infinite, He is self existent, meaning he doesn't
- 17:20need anyone or anything to exist.
- 17:22He didn't need anyone to create him.
- 17:24He's eternal. He is omnipresent, meaning he is
- 17:29everywhere all at once. He is omnipotent, all powerful.
- 17:33He is omniscient, knowing things beyond any human comprehension.
- 17:40This is God, He is that big. And when you come face to face
- 17:46in a fight with God, guess what? Your heart melts.
- 17:50And so is Rahab's. He is big, He is powerful, He's
- 17:55in charge. But look at verse 12.
- 17:58He's also kind. Now then she says, please swear
- 18:02to me by the Lord that as I have dealt kindly with you, you will
- 18:07also deal kindly with my Father's house.
- 18:10That word there in the original language is the same word that
- 18:14we get for God's steadfast love, his covenant love.
- 18:20It's the Hebrew word has said, and what that means is, is what
- 18:25she's saying is, Hey, I want to enter into eternal relationship
- 18:28with this God. I want his your God to be my
- 18:30God. And for that to happen, He needs
- 18:33to be kind to me. You need to be kind to me.
- 18:37You need to be loving to me. I know I'm an outsider.
- 18:39I am not born of the people of Israel.
- 18:42I did not wander in the desert for 40 years.
- 18:44But guess what? I believe and know that your God
- 18:48is the real God. Listen to me.
- 18:50You might not have grown up in church.
- 18:53You might not have been around the things of God before.
- 18:55You might think it's only for the people who are clean and
- 18:57pure and they grew up in it. But listen to me.
- 19:00God loves outsiders and He welcomes them in.
- 19:04He is kind to anyone who would call upon His name to be saved.
- 19:09That's who He is, and that's what He does.
- 19:14He is kind because He's also a missionary God.
- 19:17I don't know if you've ever thought about this as an
- 19:19attribute of God, that He is a missionary God, but He is
- 19:24fulfilling a promise here in saving Rahab in Genesis chapter
- 19:2812. You can write down that like
- 19:30Genesis chapter 12, he promises Abraham.
- 19:34At that point in the story, he's known as Abram.
- 19:35His name changes at one point, but Abraham is promised that
- 19:40through his lineage, all the nations of the earth will be
- 19:44blessed. The people of Israel aren't just
- 19:46to be blessed. There's intended to be a
- 19:48blessing to the world that anyone who wants to live unto
- 19:54God in worship can be an Israelite.
- 20:00And I think that many of us when we're doubting God or wrestling
- 20:04with God or we have friends that wrestling with God, we think of
- 20:07God like some cosmic tow truck, truck like driver.
- 20:11OK, I was talking to Tanisha this week and I'm putting her on
- 20:13blast. I'm so sorry, T, you're not even
- 20:15here today. But she was over at the
- 20:16Chick-fil-A over near campus. And it says very explicitly on
- 20:20those signs, do not park here unless you're a Chick-fil-A
- 20:24customer. Now, if you're in downtown Tempe
- 20:26very often, you know, parking is hard to come by and that parking
- 20:29lot normally fair game. OK, not this day, not for
- 20:35Tanisha. Poor tea.
- 20:36She goes about and she goes, she literally goes across the street
- 20:39to a different restaurant. First she was going to go to
- 20:41Chick-fil-A, but she went somewhere else 1st and there was
- 20:43a tow truck driver waiting there for her.
- 20:46Being as petty as can get. I'm sorry if you're a tow truck
- 20:48driver, by the way, I'm not trying to offend.
- 20:50But this guy, he's sitting there waiting for her car and makes
- 20:54her pay on the spot before he tows it away.
- 20:57That that's like so petty and vindictive and there's waiting
- 21:01for you to do something wrong. I think many people think about
- 21:05God like that, especially the God of the Old Testament, let's
- 21:08call it. He is the same yesterday, today,
- 21:11and forever. I think many people think that
- 21:12we're in Joshua right now, that we think God is different here
- 21:15than he is when Jesus arrives in the New Testament.
- 21:18This is the same God. This is the same God who loves
- 21:24people regardless of ethnicity, regardless of story, regardless
- 21:30of background. This is the God who is a
- 21:33missionary God who is willing to save Rahab the prostitute.
- 21:40And all it took was an admission that this God is who he said He
- 21:43is and that she needed His grace and His kindness.
- 21:48Upon her life. Rahab realized that this God is
- 21:56a missionary God. So is God worth banking your
- 22:00life on? I would say yes.
- 22:04That this God who is in charge, who is powerful, who is big and
- 22:09kind and seeking after you as a missionary, guess what?
- 22:13He loves you enough to come save you from your sin.
- 22:20That it might not be God doing the talking right here through
- 22:23the spies, but it is nonetheless an opportunity and an invitation
- 22:27for Rahab to take hold of life eternal, offered to or through
- 22:32God. This God is worth it.
- 22:38His judgement on sin is just. You cannot save yourself.
- 22:43But He is loving and kind and seeking and saving the lost.
- 22:47Even in Joshua. This is who God is.
- 22:51So what grants us God's kindness in our life?
- 22:56What grants us our his kindness in our life?
- 22:58Well, we're going to keep reading the story.
- 23:01What's question three, Question 3.
- 23:04Now as you're taking notes, is this what grants us the kindness
- 23:08of God? Let me show you in the text,
- 23:13verse 15. Then she let down the spies by a
- 23:15rope through the window, for her house was built into the city
- 23:19wall so that she lived in the wall.
- 23:22And she said to them, Go into the hills, or the pursuers will
- 23:26encounter you and hide there three days until the pursuers
- 23:29have returned. Then afterward you may go your
- 23:31way. The men, they say to her, We
- 23:33will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you
- 23:36have made us swear. Behold, when we the Israelites
- 23:39come into the land, you shall tie underlying this, this
- 23:43scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down,
- 23:49and you shall gather into your house your father and mother,
- 23:52your brothers, and all your father's household.
- 23:54Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the
- 23:57street, his blood shall be on his head and we shall be
- 24:01guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone
- 24:05who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head.
- 24:08But if you tell U.S. business of ours, then we shall be guiltless
- 24:10with respect to your oath that you made a swear.
- 24:12And she said, according to your words, so be it.
- 24:15Then Rahab sends them away. And they departed, and she tied
- 24:18the scarlet cord in the window, despised the part, and went to
- 24:23the hills, and remained there three days until the pursuers
- 24:25returned. And the pursuers searched all
- 24:27along the way and found nothing. Then the two men returned.
- 24:32They came down from the hills, passed over, and came to Joshua
- 24:35their leader, the son of Nun. And they told him all that had
- 24:37happened to them. And they said to Joshua, Truly
- 24:40the Lord has given all the land into our hands, and also all the
- 24:45inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.
- 24:50So what does Rahab do? What are we supposed to do with
- 24:54the opportunity for the gospel? Is there A to do list to do?
- 24:58Is there much to be done? I think it's actually really
- 25:03simple in the Bible. How do you receive the kindness
- 25:08and grace of God? It's simply this.
- 25:11Faith with God means risking it all to have it all.
- 25:17Faith with God is risking it all to have it all.
- 25:21Rahab risks everything by turning to God in faith.
- 25:27Her faith is simply the act of saying I'm going to hang this
- 25:31scarlet thread, that this God is who he said he is, despise and
- 25:34do what they said they do, and I and my family will be spared
- 25:38from the judgement. It's just faith.
- 25:42In fact, that's all Rahab's ever honored for in the Bible, her
- 25:45ethics here with lying. That's under debate, much
- 25:48debate, and Christians land on all sides of it.
- 25:50Personally, I land on the spot where she shouldn't have lied,
- 25:54but I understand it and God's grace is real and big.
- 25:58But I think that God never condones her lying here.
- 26:02He never says, hey, it's a good thing.
- 26:04What's commended in Hebrews 11, what's commended in the book of
- 26:07James, what's commended for her being in the genealogy of Jesus
- 26:11is her faith, her trust that God is who he said he is.
- 26:18And I think there's five aspects of her faith that I want to show
- 26:21you right there in the text. Once again, it's ordinary but
- 26:25biblical faith. The first thing is, is she
- 26:28risked her allegiance. She risked her allegiance.
- 26:33The king of Jericho knows these spies have come.
- 26:36He knows that they're in, they're in the city of Jericho
- 26:39and he's got Intel saying that they went to her in her house
- 26:45and she's willing to risk her allegiance to the people of
- 26:47Jericho, to the God of Israel. Our decision isn't very
- 26:54different. Now, we might not be risking
- 26:58necessarily our allegiance to our country or to our neighbors,
- 27:03but there are allegiances you have that are on the table when
- 27:05it comes to risking it all for God.
- 27:07Maybe it's to your family, to your career, to your image.
- 27:13Maybe it's to your friends and your relationships.
- 27:17I don't know what allegiance you hold dearest and deepest, but I
- 27:22know this. It's in competition with a good
- 27:26and great and powerful God that there is a line in the sand.
- 27:33Those who are still in rebellion against God and those who are
- 27:38waving His flag in His Kingdom. Rahab was willing to risk her
- 27:47allegiance in faith. She risked it all, risking her
- 27:52life on the reality that she would have life from God.
- 28:00She doesn't just risk her allegiance though.
- 28:02She surrenders whatever is between her and God.
- 28:06She surrendered whatever was between her and God.
- 28:11She's going to lay up the spies on the roof with the flat.
- 28:14She's going to give away whatever she can so that
- 28:18whatever's between her and God, she's not going to play it safe
- 28:21anymore. She realizes the judgement is
- 28:25coming. She can't save herself.
- 28:26So what's she going to do? Hey, God, I'm banking my whole
- 28:30life on the reality that you are who I've heard you to be, that
- 28:35you are who you say you are. We would call this playing it
- 28:41safe, the idea that we might not actually go all in.
- 28:47We're going to hedge our bet a bit against God.
- 28:49We're going to hold a little bit back.
- 28:52We'll go to church on Sundays, maybe a small group throughout
- 28:54the week. Maybe we'll listen to Christian
- 28:56music on the radio or podcast even.
- 29:01We cannot give God a part of our life and expect Him to give us a
- 29:05whole eternal life. Jesus Christ is the greatest
- 29:11treasure this side of heaven and the next.
- 29:16The pleasure of living with God as a part of your life will not
- 29:19exceed the treasure of living life with Jesus Christ as Lord.
- 29:25We hedge our bets and surrender often because we are doubting
- 29:29the reality that the pleasures of this life, that they're
- 29:34better than the treasure of knowing Jesus.
- 29:39I get it. This is me, this is my story.
- 29:44When I was 18 years old, I was headlong head first, going after
- 29:49the things that this life offers you, wealth, beauty, success,
- 29:58power. My heart was drawn to it.
- 30:04And as an 18 year old raised in the church, I believed that.
- 30:09Guess what? Like I thought to myself before
- 30:11I was saved, there is no way that going all in on Jesus is
- 30:14actually worth it. Those Christians who take him so
- 30:19seriously, here's what I thought.
- 30:21They're losers. God doesn't actually want that
- 30:26much of your life. He just wants to be a part of
- 30:29it. When Jesus is your greatest
- 30:32treasure, when you truly believe in Him like that, He becomes the
- 30:40Lord of your life and you are willing to surrender whatever He
- 30:45asks you to. Give that going into ministry,
- 30:50starting a church like we have here.
- 30:54It was God once again asking me to surrender in faith to risking
- 30:58it all again. That the faith that saved me,
- 31:02risking it all, banking my life on the reality of Jesus.
- 31:04It doesn't just save, it also sustains you.
- 31:09So listen to me, Christian faith isn't over yet in your life.
- 31:14You still need to continually risk more and more for Jesus.
- 31:18That comes through financially with your treasure.
- 31:21It comes through with your talents.
- 31:22It comes through with your time. This is what it means to have
- 31:26live a life of faith. It's saying God, I don't see
- 31:28what's on the other side of this, but I will continually
- 31:31risk it all because you are the God who I came to believe in
- 31:35when I got saved and you are the God who I know to be now and you
- 31:39are trustworthy of holding my life in your hands.
- 31:45He's worth surrendering to. She compassionately also Rahab
- 31:51two more things here on rehab in her risking at all ordinary
- 31:56faith is just compassionately looking to save others.
- 31:59Did you notice that she has a whole blurb about her family?
- 32:02Hey, my father, my brother, my sisters, my mom.
- 32:04Hey, can you get them saved too? Can you spare them?
- 32:06That's one of the first questions you should ask as
- 32:09being a saved person is who in my who is in my life that I
- 32:12would love to see be spared of the judgement of God.
- 32:19There's this magician. I think it's it's either tell or
- 32:21a pen. I don't remember which one of
- 32:23them. I never I always mix them up,
- 32:24but they're popular for looking at magicians shows.
- 32:27And one of them says this in regards to Christians.
- 32:30He said I don't believe in the whole God thing.
- 32:33But here's what I do believe that if you believe that my
- 32:36life, my eternity, is going to be completely and utterly
- 32:41judged, that there is an eternity apart from goodness and
- 32:45you don't have the courage to tell me about it, that has to be
- 32:49one of the most cruel and unloving things I've ever heard.
- 32:53That there's a train about to hit me and you stay silent.
- 32:59What are you doing? Oh, would we be a people of
- 33:05faith St. City, a people that see the
- 33:08train coming and constantly say, hey, guess what?
- 33:11Salvation is available to all, Rahab.
- 33:17That's what ordinary faith looks like, and it looks like obeying.
- 33:19She does the very thing. She lays the scarlet thread out,
- 33:21she obeys God, and then she reaps the reward of seeing God
- 33:25come through on His promises. Faith is simply just that.
- 33:28Most of the time it's just taking God at His word and
- 33:33acting upon it, knowing that He promises a good result in your
- 33:39sexual purity. It takes faith to believe that
- 33:42He promises a good result for your obedience, in your
- 33:45financial integrity, in your relationships, and seeking
- 33:50forgiveness in the way that you're raising your kids is
- 33:56taking God at His word and trusting that He knows what it's
- 33:59like to have a good marriage. He knows what it takes to be a
- 34:02good parent. He knows what it takes to be a
- 34:03good college student. He knows what it takes to have a
- 34:06life of flourishing. Would you trust Him and take Him
- 34:10at His Word? Rahab is proof positive that
- 34:15it's not where you start, it's how you end.
- 34:20He started with a horrible career of being used like an
- 34:28object. But I found something
- 34:31fascinating this week in studying Rahab.
- 34:34Rahab is the mother of a guy named Boaz.
- 34:37Some of you know who Boaz is because you've read a lot of
- 34:40your Bible, but Boaz is the husband of another major
- 34:42character named Ruth. Boaz and Ruth are the great
- 34:47great grandparents of King David, who is the great, great,
- 34:51great, great, great, great, great granddad of Jesus.
- 34:57That Rahab, the prostitute that she lives her life.
- 35:03And as yours goes on and as the book goes on, she's going to be
- 35:06saved from the battle of Jericho and she's going to marry a man
- 35:10named Salmon, not a fish, just a tough name.
- 35:15He's named Salmon. But what I learned this week is
- 35:18that Salmon, according to Jewish history, is one of these two
- 35:21spies that the home where she was used and broken, God
- 35:32redeemed. God's not done with you yet.
- 35:42However your story started, it doesn't have to be how it ends.
- 35:46She is in the lineage of Jesus Christ and the reason we have
- 35:50Joshua 2 in our Bible, It's not every single one of us could
- 35:53look at it and look at the story of Rahab and go Jesus Christ
- 35:56loves people from all stories and backgrounds.
- 36:01He came through all kinds of people, for all kinds of people.
- 36:06He is Jesus Christ. And that is really the story of
- 36:09Rahab. There's three main characters in
- 36:11the story. There's the rescuer, there's
- 36:13Rahab, and there's us, the reader.
- 36:16Jesus is not obviously glaring on the text.
- 36:18He's not like the one talking. But make no mistake, the book of
- 36:22Joshua is helping us see the reality of a man named Jesus
- 36:25Christ who would come. It is foreshadowing for us that
- 36:28the hero of the Bible ultimately is Jesus Christ.
- 36:32And he's not here for the spiritually clean.
- 36:34He's not here for the one who think they have it all together,
- 36:37but rather he's here for the ones who would humble themselves
- 36:40and look to him and say, save me, for I am a person who needs
- 36:43saving from my sin, from your judgment.
- 36:47Rahab was a liar and a harlot, but her hope wasn't in stacking
- 36:50her good deeds. It was in looking to a person
- 36:53named Jesus Christ, the hero of every person's heart who is
- 36:57saved. He is the great rescuer, the
- 37:00great Redeemer, and that is who she is looking to in this very
- 37:03moment. I hope you are seeing him
- 37:06clearly that the story of Rahab is not about the city of
- 37:09Jericho, it's about the sin inside of its walls.
- 37:13That this story is not about crossing the Jordan River.
- 37:17It's about crossing from death to life.
- 37:21That the story of Israel and Joshua is not ultimately about
- 37:24the rest and joy of the Promised land.
- 37:27It is about people receiving the rest and joy of being saved by
- 37:31Jesus Christ. Christian, do you marvel at the
- 37:35mystery of the Gospel? Once again, this is your story.
- 37:40For those still on the outside, do you believe it that Jesus is
- 37:44worth banking your life on? He is the rescuer who came to
- 37:48save every single Rahab, even you.
- 37:51And so I think this leads us to three quick pieces of our
- 37:58discipleship, how to be learners and followers of Jesus.
- 38:01This is wrong. close the three areas of our discipleship that
- 38:04God is speaking to directly. First.
- 38:06I think it speaks to our walk. So Christians, listen, this is
- 38:09for you. Are you praying that God would
- 38:12save more Rahabs in your life? The person far from God, the
- 38:17person who you think is impossible for God to save.
- 38:20Are you actually praying for that, or are you just thinking
- 38:22about it? Are you actually taking time to
- 38:25beg God to save the Rahabs in your life?
- 38:30But also, do you actually believe God is trustworthy for
- 38:35the risk he's asking you to take?
- 38:38What risk is God asking you to take still, still going to take
- 38:41faith? It's still going to take risk.
- 38:42Where in your life is that going to happen?
- 38:44It's going to happen in your finances.
- 38:45It's going to happen in your purity.
- 38:46It's going to happen in your marriage.
- 38:47It's going to happen in your parenting.
- 38:49Where in your life is it going to take faith this week?
- 38:51Because I promise you, faith is on the table once again for you
- 38:55to believe in God and take Him at His Word to obey Him.
- 38:59In fact, that's just what faith is.
- 39:01It's just the next step of obedience and that's how we walk
- 39:06with Him. 2nd, and I thought it buried just its own point is
- 39:13just it affects our witness. Are you willing to risk your
- 39:16reputation, perhaps your job, perhaps that promotion your
- 39:25image and telling others about Jesus?
- 39:30I think we get quick to rationalize that.
- 39:34We're quick to write it off and say God wouldn't really want me
- 39:37to. Rahab was willing to risk it
- 39:43all. She committed treason against
- 39:46Jericho. I just wonder if you're willing
- 39:51to take risks this week and telling others about Jesus.
- 39:54And finally, I'll borrow a line from Howie here.
- 39:58Everything in life has a tipping point.
- 40:02And so for you who are here today and you realize that Jesus
- 40:05has just been a part of your life.
- 40:08That you actually haven't risked anything on His reality of His
- 40:10resurrection yet. Are you willing to risk it all
- 40:14to have it all? Are you willing to put your
- 40:17whole life on the table, your whole eternity on the hope of
- 40:22Jesus Christ? Are you willing to do it?
- 40:25There's some of you here today that I believe God is going to
- 40:27save. That you are realizing that the
- 40:31judgement is coming and you've been trying to save yourself and
- 40:34all you can do is cry out to God for salvation in His kindness
- 40:38and grace to you. You're realizing the Rahab in
- 40:42you and you've only given a little bit, but I invite you
- 40:47today to risk it all, to have it all.
- 40:51I think Jesus is worth it. That you would grab hold of the
- 40:54scarlet thread that runs all throughout the Bible.
- 40:59It is the story of Jesus Christ, the scarlet thread that every
- 41:02person calls upon to be saved. If you believe in your heart and
- 41:06confess your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, Romans 10 says
- 41:10you will be saved. So I'm going to pray for us and
- 41:16then we're going to take communion together and I'll lead
- 41:21you through that in just a moment.
- 41:22You pray with me first.
