Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it is a new week.
- 0:16It is the 10th of November. Great to have your company.
- 0:19This week we are going to read through the rest of the book of
- 0:23First Thessalonians all the way through to the end.
- 0:26And in this book, as you'd remember from last week, we are
- 0:29going to hear the happy trio, Paul, Silas, and Timothy, who
- 0:35will be writing to this new church who are struggling to
- 0:38work out how do we remain true to our faith, this new faith,
- 0:42when everyone around us is telling us that we are numpties
- 0:45for doing what we're doing and trying to convince us to turn
- 0:48our backs on Jesus and go back to all the other gods that
- 0:51everyone else has been happily worshipping.
- 0:54And thank you everyone for your lovely feedback about getting
- 0:57Yvonne involved on Fridays. She was tickled pink to hear
- 1:01your feedback, so that was wonderful.
- 1:03So of course, by the end of the week we will dive back into
- 1:06Proverbs, and I will be joined by the lovely and very popular
- 1:10Yvonne who will read and reflect with me.
- 1:14But that is Friday, and today is Monday, and we have got some
- 1:17wonderful New Testament epistles to get to read.
- 1:20So let's do that today, shall we?
- 1:22Let us read together First Thessalonians chapter 2.
- 1:36You yourselves know, dear brothers and sisters, that our
- 1:40visit to you was not a failure. You know how badly we had been
- 1:44treated at Philippi just before we came to you, and how much we
- 1:48suffered there. Yet our God gave us the courage
- 1:52to declare His good news to you boldly in spite of great
- 1:56opposition. So you can see, we are not
- 1:58preaching with any deceit or impure motives or trickery, for
- 2:03we speak as messengers approved by God to be entrusted with the
- 2:07good news. Our purpose is to please God,
- 2:11not people. He alone examines the motives of
- 2:15our hearts. Never once did we try to win you
- 2:18with flattery, as you well know. And God is our witness that we
- 2:22were not pretending to be your friends just to get your money.
- 2:26As for human praise, we have never sought it from you or
- 2:30anyone else. As apostles of Christ, we
- 2:33certainly had a right to make some demands of you, but instead
- 2:37we were like children among you, or we were like a mother feeding
- 2:41and caring for her own children. We loved you so much that we
- 2:45shared with you not only God's good news, but our own lives
- 2:49too. Don't you remember, dear
- 2:52brothers and sisters, how hard we worked among you night and
- 2:56day? We toiled to earn a living so
- 2:59that we would not be a burden to any of you.
- 3:01As we preach God's good news to you.
- 3:03You yourselves are our witnesses, and so is God that we
- 3:08are devout and honest and faultless toward all of you
- 3:11believers. And you know that we treated
- 3:14each of you as a father treats his own children.
- 3:18We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your
- 3:22lives in a way that God would consider worthy, for he called
- 3:27you to share in his Kingdom and glory.
- 3:31Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you
- 3:35received His message from us, you didn't think of our words as
- 3:38mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the
- 3:42very word of God, which of course it is.
- 3:46And this word continues to work in you who believe.
- 3:51And then, dear brothers and sisters, you suffered
- 3:53persecution from your own countrymen.
- 3:57In this way he imitated the believers in God's churches in
- 4:00Judea, who, because of their belief in Christ Jesus, suffered
- 4:05from their own people, the Jews. For some of the Jews killed the
- 4:09prophets, and some even killed the Lord Jesus.
- 4:13But they have persecuted us too. They failed to please God and
- 4:17work against all humanity as they try to keep us from
- 4:21preaching the good news of salvation to the Gentiles.
- 4:25By doing this, they continue to pile up their sins, but the
- 4:31anger of God has caught up with them at last.
- 4:35Dear brothers and sisters, after we were separated from you for a
- 4:39little while, though our hearts never left you, we tried very
- 4:43hard to come back because of our intense longing to see you
- 4:47again. We wanted very much to come to
- 4:50you and I Paul tried again and again, but Satan prevented us.
- 4:56After all, what gives us hope and joy and what will be our
- 5:00proud reward and crown as we stand before our Lord Jesus when
- 5:03he returns? It is you.
- 5:06Yes, you are our pride and joy. Jesus, thank you for this model
- 5:21of ministry by these three ministers of your church that
- 5:26they didn't walk around just giving you lip service, just
- 5:31sharing the good news and then moving on.
- 5:33But they stayed and they loved and they gave their lives in
- 5:38relationship and community. I'll let that be the model to
- 5:43us, that when we bring you and the good news that you have for
- 5:48us to our friends and our families and our communities,
- 5:53that it's partly by what we say, but so much more by the way that
- 5:56we live and love and are present and generous and allow the
- 6:01fruits of your Spirit to grow in US and change the way that we
- 6:06are. So, Holy Spirit, come transform
- 6:11us and give us boldness to not only speak about you, but to
- 6:17live in a way that points to you.
- 6:19But to do that, we need your help.
- 6:23So please, Lord Jesus, continue your work of transformation in
- 6:26us. We love you, and we want to see
- 6:29your Kingdom come here just as it is in heaven.
- 6:34And we pray all of this in your transformative name, Amen.
