[upbeat music] Hello, everybody Buenos noches That catchy tune means it's time for Full Spectrum Cycling.
• 0:24
Show number 112. Do we do that show number thing? We do that, right? Yeah, 112- Yeah... 'cause you never know when it hits on the right thing at the right time 112. JK? I'm trying. I'm trying. Tony Berger. Yep.
• 0:39
Faded purple hair Tony. Fading fast. And joining us, I think for the first time in the studio, is Mr. Sam McMahon. Howdy. SMS. S-M-S? Strongman Sam. Oh.
• 0:53
Yeah, we're gonna get into a little bit of what Sam does besides riding bikes, but, uh, thought it'd be fun to have him in here and his doggie. Stu. How do you do? Stu hasn't made a sound since he walked in the door.
• 1:07
That's a good thing. Right? [laughs] Not shot. So- [laughs] Didn't work out tonight. Nah... it was actually pretty nice out today. Oh, yes. Finally.
• 1:17
I saw, I saw JK riding the other day and thought, "Hmm, he's a brave soul" on that day. [laughs] Pretty nice out today in Milwaukee. I'm sure that won't last. That's why I haven't- Supposed to be 65 tomorrow...
• 1:32
yeah, it looks like 60s for the foreseeable 10- Nice... ish days- Nice Sounds good... as a high. I don't believe it, but fucking whatever. Just get on your ass, [grunts] go out there. The sound of Tony kissing dogs.
• 1:47
Oh, sorry. [laughs] Sorry that one came across like that. Oh, wait, we have, we have dueling MSC, uh, hoodies. Oh, we are wearing dueling W- Ding, ding, ding, ding Not I. So- Greatest radio station in the world...
• 1:59
but weekend with the nice weather I'm gonna spend probably most of four days in a vehicle. Going to Decorah? Well, I'm going to Minneapolis tomorrow. Open a damn window then. Yeah. Oh, it'll be nice.
• 2:10
[laughs] My only problem with going to d- to, uh, Minneapolis tomorrow afternoon is I think Laughing Larry's in Tomah's gonna be closed, 'cause it's my f- favorite- Mm-hmm... breakfast spot up that way. [laughs] Bummer.
• 2:22
But I have to go to Minneapolis, then come back through La Crosse, grab some stuff, come back to Milwaukee on Friday- Wow...
• 2:27
then turn around and go back to Decorah for the event on Saturday, and La Crosse on Sunday, and come back with more load of daughter moving home from college stuff in my van. Huh. That's nice.
• 2:38
So I'm thinking it's about 1,200 miles [laughs] in four days. Yikes. Right? Not that I haven't done it before. I'm tired. I'm tired. I'm tired for you- [laughs]... on that one, man. I'll be on the ladder pulling wire.
• 2:50
I, I, I'm pre- I'm pre- like, pre-planning a Memorial Day road trip that I don't have to drive for. [laughs] So just trying to lessen the load. You're, you never have to drive for your road trips, do you?
• 3:01
Fuck, no, I don't. That's awesome. The woman won't let him drive. Yeah. [laughs] It's a Mercedes. It's pretty nice. Whatever, it's a fucking car. It's a pretty classic Mercedes. I like it a lot. Whatever.
• 3:12
I saw a McLaren yesterday, speaking of classic cars. Of course I was in Sherwood. Yeah. No, I'm sorry. I- Excuse me. I was in Whitefish Bay. You'll have those in Whitefish Bay- Yeah... now and again. Mm.
• 3:23
In staff for one stop sign, motherfucker. How's your pushups going? Got my 100 in before I showed up today. 190 the other night, Monday. Are you feeling stronger? I do. Did you do that when you're drunk, or...?
• 3:36
Uh, sometimes, but- [laughs]... um- Or do you ever fall on your face? No. Fortunately, I, I- I was gonna do a-...
• 3:42
I'm smart enough to stop before I do a full exhaustion face plant And you do it on carpeting just in case. I don't own any carpeting. Oh. I do it on a yoga mat, but... Hmm.
• 3:51
Speaking of yoga stuff, I got one of those roller dealies. What do you think? Well, I can't figure out how to s- do, do it w- the way you were telling me to do it with the- Along the spine?... the long way.
• 4:00
Oh, you do it along the spine or s- I just kind of fall off of it... a t- a blanket or something for your head, or a towel rolled up that you can rest your head on, then you just roll it back and forth.
• 4:07
Oh, it's a little bit. Hmm. I'm gonna have to give that a little more trying, but it does- It's a little bit... it does feel good on the back. Oh, man. Yeah, happy about that.
• 4:13
You can turn it the other way too, perpendicular to the body and roll- Yeah, that's the way that I was doing it, just Tony had come up with this vertical thing. I- I'm like, "I, I-" They both work. It's very nice. Yeah.
• 4:24
So- Sam's the reason I stretch, 'cause every once in a while I'll get a text saying, "Stand up straight and stretch." You're the reason- That's-... that I stretch So Sam, welcome to the show. Thanks for having me.
• 4:36
We, we see Sam fairly often on, on bike rides. Uh, but give us a little background on your athletic prowess, because, uh, Sam coming, hailing from Dubuque, Iowa. [laughs] I don't know if it'd be prowess.
• 4:51
Just a lot of it. Lot of it? Yeah. So you were, you were football through school? I started with BMX racing. Oh, good. It started with a m- a bicycle. Yeah. And then, uh, from there it was hockey.
• 5:04
And then from there, football, college football, and then I played football in Europe.
• 5:09
And then, uh, when I moved back from Europe, I didn't have anything to do, so I started competing in Strongman, and, uh, did that as an amateur for a couple years, and then turned professional.
• 5:22
Competed as a heavyweight pro for about 10 years and, uh, retired, and now I go to work like everybody else. [laughs] So you w- you went up against some of the still m- more famous names in Strongman?
• 5:35
Yes, um, some world champions, Brian Shaw, Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, some people like that I've competed against with many times, and judged them after I retired.
• 5:47
What makes some of the, uh, like Icelandic or, um, Scandinavian guys so strong? Is it, is it just they do it more? Or what, what makes them sort of- Viking blood Yeah. Is it the Viking blood? Genes.
• 5:59
[laughs] It's just like- Well... it seems like a lot of the names are Magnus, Thor Magnusson or some such- Yeah... you know? The, uh...
• 6:05
Over the last, I don't know, 30 years, in the '90s it was pretty dominated by the Scandinavians, Jon Pal Sigmarsson, Magnus Ver Magnusson, Jocka Hall, Magnus Samuelsson, a couple others.
• 6:18
Uh, and then in the 2000s the Eastern Europeans took over. That was Mariusz Pudzianowski, and Zydrunas Savickas, and a couple others. And then, uh, Brian Shaw kind of took over for a while.
• 6:29
I think he won four American guy? American guy. American. Less syllables. He's from America. Yeah, a lot less syllables on that one. [laughs] See the guy from Vegas? It's like, yeah.
• 6:37
No, he's from, uh, Fort Lupton, Colorado. Oh, okay. Um, and then, uh, since then it's kind of been a hodgepodge of guys.
• 6:45
There's was an English guy not long ago, a Icelandic guy got back in the winner's seat, uh, again a couple years ago, and, uh, another American, and then last year it was a Ukrainian.
• 6:59
So I'm not sure why it all worked like that, but it just- The natural fucking Ukrainian... kind of seemed like regions of the world were winning for, you know, extended periods of time. Right on.
• 7:10
So do you, do you miss competing in that, that sport? No, it kind of ran its course with me. Uh, I was ready to be done when, when that time came. Uh, you know, it was a... I'd been involved in it 20 years.
• 7:24
Yeah, it's a long time. You know? And, um, so I, I was ready to be done. I went to Iceland and did my final contest about 10 years ago, and I was happy to be done.
• 7:35
So where does, uh, cycling fit in with, with the Strongman thing or post-Strongman? Um, as far as, like, will I compete in that or anything? [laughs] No. Well, not so much. I just, you, you ride often.
• 7:47
And, and maybe tell folks a little bit about your bikes, because you've got some interesting bikes. Well, um- And he can wheelie like a motherfucker. Yeah, he's insane. Well, there's that.
• 7:54
Pretty much the wheelie king of Milwaukee. [laughs] Uh, uh, at least one of them, for sure. It's kind of insane. Um- You make me wanna try to break, or, like, to bother my thing [laughs] when I tried doing a wheelie. No.
• 8:08
[laughs] It's all about the rear brake. Yeah, to keep from going backwards on your keister. Oh, by the way, I kind of, I, I kind of need some addressment to my, uh, disc brake. Yeah. Oh, boy. Right. Um- Good segue...
• 8:20
my, uh, my collection's dwindling fast, 'cause all I ride is my Wyatt now. Yeah, Sam has a Wyatt fat bike, which is pretty kickass. Um- And we should probably state, you know, you are a man of large girth. Somewhat.
• 8:36
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, so your bike selections have to be chosen very carefully given- I was, I was 307 and a half this morning. Whoa. Um, but yeah, I had a Karate Monkey. Yeah, it was 200. A Surly Karate Monkey. Nice.
• 8:50
Got rid of that. I got a SE Racing Quadangle. I'm getting rid of that this week. You had a PUG. I had a Surly Pugsley. Got rid of that, all because all I ride is my Wyatt. So I like fat bikes. Yeah, for sure.
• 9:07
Um, you also, you also do other two-wheeled stuff. Got a couple motorbikes. Pretty heavy into the motorcycles. Um- Are you, uh, gonna go somewhere soon?
• 9:15
I'm leaving for, uh, Central and South America on the 1st of January for three months. You're going, you're going from north to south, correct? Correct.
• 9:24
And then when, uh, when I gotta turn around, I'm either gonna try to sell the bike or just... or ship it back. We'll see. Gonna be interesting to see what's happening in about a year, 'cause, uh- Yeah, I know...
• 9:36
the world's pretty changed from, uh, what it was a few years ago. Believe me, I got a backup plan. I- [laughs] I have an idea. Idea? We, we leave the bike,
• 9:46
we attach a GPS tracking system to it, we set up a website that tracks where it goes, and we gamble against where it's gonna show up. [laughs] Probably make enough money to pay off the- Leave it with the keys in it?
• 9:57
Well, just... N- nay, not even the keys. Just leave it, like, locked to a post somewhere. It's like, uh, w- in the slope soaring thing I do with the model airplanes, we had a plane that you...
• 10:08
It, it showed up on your doorstep, and you flew it and took pictures, and showed where you flew it, and then you sent it on to somebody else. It didn't have a GPS tracker at that point. Oh, like the X-Plane?
• 10:16
But it's been all around the world. The Standard or the Premium? It's... It was pretty cool. Yeah. That's a pretty cool idea. It's just a, it's like a piece of foam. It's like a triangular
• 10:25
s- four-foot span piece of foam that's pretty easy to split in half and send it. You kind of just basically strapping tape it back together and throw it off a hill somewhere. Yeah. Nice. Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
• 10:35
Uh- I'm n- I'm not sure if the original is still alive, but it's made out of the same stuff that comes in your computer- Mm-hmm... um, you know, box. It's the, uh, indestructible foam, basically. Thank you.
• 10:47
You know, I have a bike thing that I have something we can actually talk about that's bike related. I got all sorts of stuff on your list- Yeah, everything is bike related... of bike stuff to talk about. Or related.
• 10:54
You know, there, uh, let's just start since you want me to talk. Oh, hey. Um- Did you hit the button yet? Hit the button. The button's been pushed. The button's been hit. I checked too. Good, good call.
• 11:03
I g- I got the backup going over here too, so. So I, we have the friend that occasionally pops up on this show. He's never actually... Yeah, he has been here once. Uh, Dinardo Calucci. Dinardo's been here.
• 11:13
Dinardo, um, always told me that you never- Yes, I have photographic evidence of this. Yeah, that's true. Dinardo told me you never wanna take apart an SA three-speed, you just wanna replace it.
• 11:21
And then COVID hit, and I g- a strange text message from Dinardo saying, "Hey, you want me to fix your Sturmey Archer three-speed that's on Molly's bike that doesn't shift?" I'm like, "Yes."
• 11:31
And he took it completely apart. He said basically it looks like it's never been ridden, and it just sat there, and the grease just hardened. Yeah, it's not uncommon on internally gear hubs, for sure. And he...
• 11:41
Yeah, and so he completely rebuilt it, and I put it on the bike today. Might be three or four months since he gave it to me. Couldn't quite get it to shift right, but it was, uh, just a stuck pin.
• 11:51
And lo and behold, Molly's three speed shifts like butter. Butter. We are a slow family. They are a great little three speed. Slow but steady- Molly rode it around the block... wins the race.
• 12:00
She rode it around the block. She said, "You know what? I forgot how much fun it is to ride these vintage Raleighs around." I'm like, "Yeah." They're, like, twitchy and stuff. They just got a [laughs] great feel.
• 12:07
It's like you're never gonna go, like, crazy on them, but- Does it have real swept back handlebars- Yeah... so you go- It's got pr- yep. You know. [laughs] And I put cool stops on it so it actually stops a little.
• 12:17
Um- Stopping is good... and then while I was downstairs, I was thinking, "You know, it's time for me to change out my Thudbuster to my Th-... slightly larger mass, thinking that the 170s- Don't rub yourself like that...
• 12:31
thinking that the 170 weight- It makes me anxious... weight is where you change the dampener. Mm-hmm. So I'm like, "I'll bring it to the podcast tonight and I'll change the dampener."
• 12:38
And I got everything out and- Damp, like moist?... pulled out the instruction, and it turns out that- Moisture... I've been riding it too fat all these, all this time. I should have had one dampener down.
• 12:46
I don't know, I always liked them a little on the stiffer side. I, I, I s- I'm like, great, I'm, I'm, I loved it where it was, but I thought maybe I'm doing damage because I've added- You're doing damage... 20 pounds.
• 12:55
Damage So you haven't, y- so you had, you didn't have to change it at all? No, it's blue and blue. It's good. Is that what's on the Schmitty? It was on the Schmitty, but, um,
• 13:05
for reasons like a rack, I can no longer use it, so I went to a- Oh, right... to a Thompson Sweat back. I had to go all the way to- Speaking of a Thompson, how'd you break a Thompson faceplate?
• 13:15
Yeah, speaking of a Thompson, that you break a thing and the- I-... thing... uh, I, I, it broke. I tightened it too hard. Yikes. Yeah. Yeah, there's a thing called torque.
• 13:24
You should, uh, get your hand torque- It's aluminium. I was- Your torque hand-... just holding it lightly What'd you break?... re- Fucked. Oh... re, recalibrated. Where is that stem? Where the hell?
• 13:32
Where the hell is it? The one I sent you the picture of, the crack. It's way back there. Oh, god. Uh. Mm. And you got your busted frame still, too. Yeah, I'm working on it. Or busted seat post. Busted seat post. Yep.
• 13:40
Oh, not gonna, busting a lot of stuff. Trying to get that out so I can get that to Key and Key can weld us a bike. Let's talk about that after. [bell ringing] Hey, now.
• 13:47
JK, JK was getting antsy about the, the top of the hill here. Well, yes. Well, he just got there faster than we did. We're antsy. So, uh, tell us about the beer that, uh- It's fucking Narragansett...
• 14:00
it's the, it's the, it's the official beer of the clam. Yeah. [laughs] That's kinda weird. Dude, it's just this. Narragansett. And the tie-in is? From fucking Jaws. You crush it like Quint.
• 14:15
It's, goddamn, and it's a East Coast beer and it just came out in the Midwest. I mean, it's like Yuengling. It's a dad beer and just like whatever. It's like having Grain Belt or ba-da-da-da. Shit like you can't- Right.
• 14:29
It's-... normally, normally get... re- regional- Gold Star. Ooh. You know?... regional dad beer. Yeah. And- So what, uh- So... where did you find it? In our fair county woods? Uh, Donder Wine and Spirits.
• 14:38
That's where I was finding my good, uh, NA beer. Hey. Oh, by the way, I'm off the wagon. [laughs] Look out. Was, was Athletic on your list of- [laughs]... good beers or not so good beers? Yeah, very good. Okay.
• 14:49
You know, that's getting advertised a lot on one of the many internet channels Molly and I watch. Because- Yeah, Athletic Brew... because I speak of it and you're near me, and, and- Yeah, it must be. It's all-...
• 14:59
it, it transfers. Osmosis. See, come on, you know this. All right. [laughs] I know. So tell us about this House of the Clam beer. It's, uh- I just did.
• 15:10
It says, it says Hi, Neighbor- Yeah, it's, it's, yeah, it's an East Coast dad beer... on the side of it. Oh, it does say Hi, Neighbor. It's the hot neighbor. Made on honor. Yeah. What exactly does that mean?
• 15:16
I don't- Sold on merit. Sold on... Oh, there you go. You have to read the second half of the- Yeah. Yeah. Where's it from? I'm not gonna read it if you- Well, uh, somewhere. Somewhere. Rochester, New York. Rochester?
• 15:26
Roche- Yes, boss... New York City. Yeah. [laughs] Also the mean streets of Albany. [bell ringing] Or maybe Rhode Island. I don't know. It says write or visit us at 461 Main Street, Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
• 15:37
So, uh- Well, exactly. Yeah. It's probably mob-run. That's like Hams- Hams is Milwaukee. Yep. Or is it? Well, it's from the land of sky blue waters. Well, there's- Do we have sky blue waters here in Milwaukee?
• 15:48
I don't think so. Eh, depending on what you took before you look at them. I know he's been patiently waiting on the, on the line. Hey, welcome to Radio Program Caller. Who do we have on the line? Get a rope.
• 16:04
[laughs] Get a rope. I'm in New York City. Get a rope. [laughs] Oh, wow. You know that Picante sauce commercial? In Picante sauce? Yep. It says, "New York City? Get a rope." Get a rope.
• 16:18
[laughs] Yeah, I forgot what, what, uh, hot sauce that was for. Was it- Pace. Pace. Pace. Pace. There you go. That was it. Made in Texas. Yep, Pace. So what's up, Big Sexy? No, no, I'm, so here I am.
• 16:30
Whoa, we kinda broke up there. Just saying what's up, Big Sexy. Did I lose you? Nope. Speak your mind. Do, do I need to switch my Bluetooth off? Yes. Yes. Sure. That's always a, that's always a good call. There we go.
• 16:46
How's, how's this? Oh, that's it. How's this? Better? So much better. Big Sexy. Okay, cool. Sorry, sorry. Yeah, dude, um, crossed into New York City today. Uh, took the ferry boat from Belford.
• 16:58
Uh, it was about a hour, hour ride right past the Statue of Liberty. Oh, baby. That sounds interesting. I've never, uh, been past that beautiful lady on the water. Sounds interesting. Statue?
• 17:10
It was, uh, she was a silhouette because the sun was going down. Wow.
• 17:16
It, I mean, I, I saw, I saw it in all of its glory, but it, like she, it looked like the silhouette of the, of the Statue of Liberty, so I really didn't get a good picture, but whatever. That's cool, actually.
• 17:26
Um- But she's not, she's not buried up to her crown in sand though, right? No, no. Or floating, or floating. Uh. [laughs] Oh, I just got- Right, right. [laughs] And, uh, what else? No.
• 17:38
The, the Griswold- All are welcome except you... the Griswold's not, not the, not the torch down. [laughs] Yep. Yep, yep. Um- So you- I'll tell you what, though.
• 17:47
I don't know if, if you guys remember or not, but I absolutely hated New Jersey on the 2019 trip. Mm. It was absolutely disgusting, and I was sick. Oh my God, it was so, so bad.
• 18:02
Trenton, New Jersey is the, is the worst city I've ever been in in my life. I, I, I, I mean, I never really- So-... thought of, like... Yeah, I mean, okay, uh, Kevin Smith and, uh, like the Clerks- Yeah...
• 18:15
world, yeah, that would be my, you know, like, "Oh, I wanna go to Red Bank and check it out," which I probably will at one point. But, but I'm, I'm here to tell you, I'm here to tell you- Yeah...
• 18:25
that I took the ferry boat from D- from, uh, Dewey Beach, Delaware- To Cape May, New Jersey, and from Cape May all the way to Belford, which is, which is where I, I rolled out of today. Um, Atlantic City, Ocean City,
• 18:41
um, ri- right up the coast, and it was absolutely awesome. New Jersey has redeemed itself in my- Oh, I know, I know... in, in, in, in my world now.
• 18:50
It might have something to do with them getting rid of all those Trump hotels and casinos along the- Ah, yes... along the strip there, maybe. Yeah. [laughs] But you know what? Did they blow them up? Are they gone?
• 18:59
You know what? I was on- Oh, they blew them in- I was... Uh. Oh, yeah. I was, I was on Ventnor Avenue, and I switched over to Atlantic Avenue. Can you do that? Took a, took a- Monopoly doesn't work that way...
• 19:12
took a left on Pennsylvania- [laughs]... crossed Baltic, took a, took a left on, uh, on Mediterranean- Kickflip... and then took, um, Pacific Avenue all the way out of the city. It was pretty sweet.
• 19:25
[laughs] I'm like, Monopoly is pretty- You're just playing fucking Monopoly- Yeah... and having a good time, man. Goddamn, that's awesome. Yep.
• 19:32
[laughs] Well, I mean, if I had time and I, and I wanted to hang around Atlantic City for, for a day, if I had money or time, I would've tried to get all the, all the streets. But- No shit. Yeah. Oh.
• 19:44
That, that would've been cool- I envy you... to get a picture of all the streets- I envy you... and like put them on Facebook in order. That would've been cool. That sure would. It's almost an- Yep. So, um-...
• 19:52
  thing to do... I'm, I'm g- I'm going... I'm, I'm s- I'm, I'm sorry to t- I'm gonna talk a lot, but then I'm gonna listen, I promise.
• 19:59
Um, I'm gonna take, um, tomorrow I'm gonna take off, um, across the Williamsburg Bridge, and then to tip, tip, tip of Long Island. I don't know how long it's gonna take me, but then I take a- another boat
• 20:12
from Long Island to New London, Connecticut, and then that's where my friend's gonna pick me up and bring me to Cape Cod, and I'm taking a month off. Fuck yeah. Oh, that sounds- Nice... that sounds wonderful.
• 20:20
Cape Cod is a great place. Yep, love it. Oh, I'm sniffing Provincetown. Oh, baby. I'm totally sniffing around. And- Rrr... and if, and if you got to snuggle with what I get to snuggle with when I get there, oh, sugar.
• 20:33
[laughs] Is it a dog? Speaking of dogs- I'm, I'm talking about, I'm talking about a dog, yes. [laughs] Stu is being very quiet. We have a- [laughs]... we have a dog in the studio today. Yeah, I know that. Yeah.
• 20:47
Oh, really? Yep. [laughs] What kind? It is, uh- He's a bully... it's Sam's new, new doggy. It's, it- Some kind of pit bull we got him at m- at MADIC. Some, some kind of bull terrier, pit bull kind of a thing.
• 20:58
He's the sweetest thing. Nice. Ziggy. He's not a purebred, or is he? I, I think he's a American bulldog and pit bull. American. He's a little bit of a mixture. American. Nice. Yeah, he's sweet. And the name of this dog?
• 21:11
His name is Stu, after Stu Thompson. Do you know who Stu Thompson is? Stu Thompson? Yeah. Stu Town. S-T-U. S-T-U, yep. Yeah, he was, uh, he was the premier BMX racer when, uh, back in the '80s. Great.
• 21:26
He was Factory Red Line- Great... and then he went to Huffy. But I used to have a dog named Butkus. My idol in football was Dick Butkus. Butkus. Nice.
• 21:35
And then my idol in BMX racing was Stu Thompson, and then, uh, the next dog will be Magnus Ver Magnusson. [laughs] I think, uh- Or- Ray- [laughs] So Ray Nitschke had a dog- Maybe Tony... named Buttkiss as well.
• 21:48
Yeah, so did Rocky. [laughs] I, I, I have nephews- What-... that just could not wrap their head around the fact that his name was Buttkiss. Like, oh, they were playing football like, "Dude, Buttkiss? Come on."
• 22:00
I got to meet him. "Really? Seriously?" Like, "Really?" He has a restaurant there. I got, I got to meet him and hang out with him in Vegas. That was cool. Yeah- Very cool...
• 22:09
any, anytime you can meet an old hero like that, it's fun. Well, and especially if they're cool, 'cause you gotta be careful when you meet your heroes.
• 22:16
