- 2:23hotline is three zero four three four five fifty fifty eight and the text line
- 2:27for through three zero four nine three five five zero's zero away. Well I
- 2:30mentioned it. I've got at tourney General Patrick Morrissey coming up a little bit
- 2:34later on the show. But we're lucky today because we not only have one,
- 2:37we have two candidates for two for the price of one candidates in studio
- 2:40today. It's crowded field. But there is a name that you may not
- 2:46be aware of on the ballot. She's Erica Kalinitch and she is the Libertarian
- 2:50candadate for governor and she joins us now. Erica, good morning, welcome
- 2:53to the show. Good morning, thanks for having me. Did I do
- 2:55okay on the last name. This year you did it was perfect, perfect,
- 2:59perfect, And so for when I messed it up next time, I
- 3:00could say, well, I did it perfect once. It's Erica Cleinach.
- 3:04And we get into spelling that a little bit later on, because we want
- 3:07people able to find you on your website and social media. Give us a
- 3:09little bit of background on Erica Collinach. Sure. Well, I am from
- 3:15Buckhannon, West Virginia, where I live with my husband Carl. I am
- 3:20a lawyer. I have a firm that started in Buckchannan. We now have
- 3:24three offices in West Virginia, one in Clarksburg and one in Parkersburg. So
- 3:31I am a small business owner, like a lot of folks in West Virginia.
- 3:36This is my second time running for governor. I ran in twenty twenty.
- 3:39Although I'm not a politician, which I know a lot of people laugh
- 3:42at when I say I'm running for governor. But I'm not a politician.
- 3:45I just call myself a West Virginian and a small business owner. All right,
- 3:49So why do you want to be governor? Well, I want to
- 3:51be governor because I think West Virginia needs something different. It's time for something
- 3:54different. I think that we're not moving the needle in West Virginia. We're
- 3:59trying this same things over and over again, and I, like a lot
- 4:02of people in West Virginia, am frustrated. I'm frustrated with the two party
- 4:06system. I think that the Democrats and specifically the Republicans are just they're just
- 4:12trying the same things. They're just getting us in a circle of paying back
- 4:16their friends, trying the same ideas, making government bigger and bigger, and
- 4:20recycling the same things that aren't working. And we're not getting anywhere. If
- 4:25you look at the lists right, we continue to stay at the bottom.
- 4:28We're not making any headway, and it's time for something different. And I
- 4:30think I'm that something different. What do you make though of In the recent
- 4:36years, there's been all of these announcements that have come in about you know,
- 4:39down here, everybody talks about new core and some of the ones in
- 4:42the different areas of the state. I mean, there is some there's some
- 4:45growth going on in West Virginia. How would you how would you answer that,
- 4:48Sure, there's some growth going on in West Virginia. There's no question.
- 4:51And that's why I said, you know, we're we're moving the needle
- 4:55certainly, but we're not moving it significantly enough. And we're using this same
- 5:00playbook right the West Virginia playbook on economy has always been, let's give sweetheart
- 5:05deals to you know, big corporations and try to incentivize them to come to
- 5:12West Virginia. And practically speaking, that maybe moves the needle a tick,
- 5:17but it doesn't move the needle a whole lot. And who gets lost in
- 5:19that, well, small local businesses that are already here. We make it
- 5:25as difficult as possible for those businesses to operate. And what we don't do,
- 5:30and what West Virginia government has never done, is why don't we see
- 5:32what we can do to make it easier for those businesses to operate? And
- 5:36if we did that, we'd see the needle move an awful lot more than
- 5:42we do, and we don't ever try that. How does the process of
- 5:46how does it work? And becoming the libertarian part of the party candidate,
- 5:49I mean, how does it work? Because I know that you know,
- 5:51people understand the way the Democrats and Republican zoom, But how do you do
- 5:55it in the Libertarian party? Sure, well, in the Libertarian Party,
- 5:58we don't run a primary the way that the other two major parties do.
- 6:00We do nomination by a nominating convention. So we've already done that, and
- 6:06I've already received the nomination. So right now, for example, in the
- 6:10Republican Party or the Democratic Party, the question is who's going to be on
- 6:14the ballot in November of twenty twenty four, we don't have that question in
- 6:16the Libertarian Party. I'm going to be the candidate in November of twenty twenty
- 6:19four. So the Libertarians get together, they have a convention, and they
- 6:23decide who's the best candidate, who are we going to nominate? And they've
- 6:26selected me in that problem. So so you're the only one. I'm it,
- 6:29You're it. I'm proud to say that I'm the only person that we
- 6:33know for certain is going to be on the ballot in November of twenty twenty
- 6:38four. Very good way to look at it. So, whoever, you
- 6:40could also say, look whoever wins there, Because we know we've got at
- 6:44least one Democrat running in Steve Williams, the honey to mayor, we get
- 6:46several Republicans running. You could always say they're fighting it out to see who
- 6:51takes on me. That's right. Right, For those who don't know,
- 6:56give us the basic idea of the principles of the Libertarian Party. Sure,
- 7:00well, you know, in the Libertarian Party, we feel that minimal,
- 7:03minimal government intervention in your life is best. We think that you are the
- 7:08best person that knows how to run your life for you and your family.
- 7:12So anytime we can keep the government as small as possible and making limited decisions,
- 7:18we think that that's best. So we think that the government's limited role
- 7:23is to protect property and to protect life, and that's really it. So
- 7:28anytime we can have private charitable entities, for example, solving societal problems,
- 7:34we think that that's better than the government trying to do those things. You
- 7:38we're talking to Erica Kalenich, who is the Libertarian candidate for governor here in
- 7:43West Virginia. Now, I would think, and I mean this with all
- 7:46due respect, they getting elected as governor West Virginia as a libertarian. Some
- 7:49people might see it as a long shot. Oh sure, sure they do.
- 7:55And you know, I think a lot of that. You know,
- 7:57it's a step by step process, right, So step number one is getting
- 8:01your name out there, and step number two is convincing people to vote for
- 8:05you. But you know step number one is we're we're doing that right now,
- 8:09right We're letting people know that I'm out there. And step number two,
- 8:13I think the state of politics is making that happen for the Libertarian Party
- 8:22and for other third parties. If you listen to people talk, you know
- 8:28that people are frustrated with the two party system and you know that they're looking
- 8:31for something else. More and more people are unhappy with their two choices.
- 8:35People are unhappy with the state of the government. People are unhappy with the
- 8:41state of politics, and eventually those people are going to start looking for third
- 8:46choices. More than ever, people are saying, we're not happy with you
- 8:52know, coke versus PEPSI, which is really what Democrats versus were exactly exactly,
- 8:58and that's what we offer. And you know, every every election we
- 9:03hear you know, it's a it's a long shot, it's a long shot,
- 9:07but we're the only growing party in West Virginia. We're growing at a
- 9:11higher rate than the Republicans. We're certainly growing at a higher rate than the
- 9:16Democrats. So I would say that you know, now is the time to
- 9:20vote for a third party. Now is the time certainly to explore voting for
- 9:24a libertarian. I think it's possible. But Dave Allen Show on five,
- 9:28Any Line is brought to you part by Meeks Realty Group discovered the unrivaled expertise
- 9:31of makes your Ultimate Partners and all things real estate. Whether it's your dream
- 9:35home with that ideal commercial space Meeks as you cover, contact Rich the realtor
- 9:39three zero four nine three two seventy four eighty eight. Let Rich in the
- 9:41team guide you on your real estate journey to take a look at their listings
- 9:45at Meeks dot us. Okay, I'm going on with something that you said
- 9:48there, Erica, and that was because we've seen on the national level the
- 9:54majority of people have said when it comes to Trump Biden, Trump v Biden
- 9:56that they don't want either candidate. And I don't know if that's totally the
- 10:03case in West Virginia, but I do hear from a lot of people.
- 10:05They text this show and they look at the people that are running for for
- 10:09governor or Senate or whatever, and they kind of echo that and they say,
- 10:13look, I just want something different. So I guess you and your
- 10:18party are tapping tapping into that. We are and you know, not to
- 10:24not to call out any specific candidates, but we certainly have that here in
- 10:28West Virginia. I mean, if you look at who we have running,
- 10:31they're recycled versions of the same people who have run, and I think people
- 10:35get tired of that. And I think people get tired of politicians and candidates
- 10:41that have their donor money coming from the same sources, and they have the
- 10:46same special interests to pay back, and they have the same special agendas,
- 10:50and they really are looking for somebody different. They're looking for new and fresh
- 10:54ideas, new ways to solve problems, and libertarian solutions, my solutions to
- 11:01problems really offer a new and fresh perspective. So I'd say to people,
- 11:05even if you're maybe not really ready to go to the ballot box and say,
- 11:09hey, I'm going to do something super bold and vote for a libertarian,
- 11:15just check check me out, check other libertarian candidates out, look at
- 11:18what we're proposing in terms of a solution. I'm going to guess that you
- 11:24agree with me on at least sixty to seventy percent of what I say,
- 11:28which may mean that you should at least start considering voting for libertarian candidates.
- 11:33So just at least start opening your mind to the idea, and I'm gonna
- 11:39guess that you'll probably find that you land with a third party more than you
- 11:43might think, and that's the first step to change, you know. I
- 11:46always tell everybody, voting for somebody that you believe in is never a wasted
- 11:54vote, and it goes a lot further than voting for somebody just because you're
- 12:00really casting a vote so the other guy doesn't win. Boy, let you
- 12:03go. I don't normally take calls or text or anything like that to the
- 12:05Showcus quite frankly and our toxic environment turns to a gotcha type moment, But
- 12:11I'm gonna have one that I wanted to read to you, and it's not
- 12:13a gotcha moment or anything like that. Somebody just asked me to ask you,
- 12:16what do you plan to do for economic development in southern West Virginia.
- 12:20Sure, well, in southern West Virginia, the plan would be the same
- 12:26as it is for most of the rest of the state. What we have
- 12:30to do is we have to eliminate the regulations and the red tape that make
- 12:35it very difficult for businesses to operate. We are right in the I will
- 12:43say, the middle of the pack in terms of most states for business regulation,
- 12:48which means we're a heavily a fairly heavily regulated state in terms of industry.
- 12:54We need to cut back those regulations. Texas, for example, is
- 12:58one of the most least regulated states and they have one of the highest GDPs
- 13:05in the state. All we have to do is their businesses in the southern
- 13:09coal fields, right in the southern part of the state. We need to
- 13:11make it easier for those businesses to flourish. We need to stop taxing them
- 13:16so much, and we need to stop placing regulations on them that make it
- 13:20so difficult for them to operate, and as a natural consequence, they will
- 13:26have an easier time we're That's step number one. Where can people learn more
- 13:31about your campaign? People can learn learn more about my campaign because my last
- 13:35name is so tough by simply going to now is the Time wv dot com.

- 16:47state as Attorney General for a couple of terms. Now he wants to take
- 16:49over the Governor's mansion and he joined us now. Mister a g Good morning,
- 16:52Happy new year, and welcome to the show. Happy new year,
- 16:56David. I hope you're having a good new year, and I'm glad to
- 16:59come in to talk about the race. And I know you're going to give
- 17:02me a chance to talk about our great outside council record as well. Yes,
- 17:06whatever you want, it is your time. I want to talk about
- 17:08the campaign for governor and then we'll kind of turn it over to you.
- 17:11The polls have shown that you lead in both popularity and in money raised.
- 17:18Why do you think the message of Patrick Morrissey is resonating so far? So
- 17:22even though it's early, so far so much with voters. Look, I
- 17:25think voters want to get a proven conservative with a record of getting big things
- 17:30done. And quite frankly, no one else running can come close to the
- 17:34record that we've had As Attorney General of the state. We were able to
- 17:38go after the federal le biason and win. You hear all these candidates talk
- 17:42about what they'll do to push back against the swamp. We've actually done it.
- 17:45We're one of the only people that can say we sued the federal government
- 17:51and we want time after time after time, and these cases really matter for
- 17:56West Virginia jobs and West Virginia values. So I think when start to look
- 18:00around and say who should be leading state government into the future, you want
- 18:04to look and see whether they're qualified, what their past experiences are. And
- 18:08that's where I think we have a huge advantage because you've got a couple people.
- 18:12They may be saying the right things, but they can't compete in terms
- 18:17of the record of getting big things done, the conservative nature of the cases,
- 18:21whether it's successfully defending Hope Scholarship, being out there in the arena litigating
- 18:27against men playing sports with women, which we think is reprehensible and unfair to
- 18:33women, helping to protect our jobs, whether winning the Waters United States Rule
- 18:37case, the famous West Virginia EPA case protecting a lot of coal jobs and
- 18:42the ancillary jobs related to coal here in the state. And then they think,
- 18:47Okay, now we have to go forward in your vision for the future.
- 18:51Who's going to be ready and they say, there's only one person who's
- 18:55hot to engage in all those fights. Who will you trust when Washington starts
- 18:59to come that for our state into the future. There is only one answer
- 19:03to that question. You know, we're talking with Attorney General Patrick Morrissey,
- 19:07who is a candidate for governor here in the state of West Virginia. When
- 19:11you're out Patrick, meeting with people and meeting the civic groups or Republican groups
- 19:15or anybody for that matter, what's the basic message that you give them.
- 19:19I mean, I know you've had the successes you talked about in the courts,
- 19:22but what's the basic message that you give them about what a governor Patrick
- 19:27Morrissey will look like. Absolutely so to me, West Virginia should be that
- 19:33shining state in the mountains, and we need to compete more effectively with other
- 19:38states that we toatch. And I think that's one of the core premises behind
- 19:42my candidacy that at the beginning, in the first one hundred days, we're
- 19:47going to do a review of every single tax, every single regulation, every
- 19:52single workforce rule, every single licensing provision, and we're going to stack West
- 19:56Virginia up against all the states that we tell and quite frankly, we're going
- 20:00to work with the legislature to choose the very best policies. And that's important
- 20:06because in order to move from forty eight to forty nine, fiftieth in the
- 20:11nation and a lot of these categories, to rise toward number one, you
- 20:15first have to win regionally, right, So we have to start defeating the
- 20:18Pennsylvania's, the Maryland, the Virginia's, the Kentucky's, the Ohios of the
- 20:23world before you start to get in the top five or ten from an economic
- 20:27perspective. So I think you lay that out and you talk to people about
- 20:32the importance of having competitive policies, and we're starting to see that with the
- 20:37legislature, but we can go so much further, and I'm excited to provide
- 20:41that leadership. I think people also want someone who they can trust in the
- 20:45big challenges ahead. Washington is going to keep coming after our way of life
- 20:52and our jobs, and we have to do something about that. I think
- 20:56they know that you need a proven conservative who can build these coalitions and knows
- 21:00how to stand up, not just to fight, but to win these fights.
- 21:03Now I hear these people saying that they're fighters. What have they ever
- 21:07accomplished? Right? What have they thought over? We've fought in the arena,
- 21:11and we've won and delivered time after time for West Virginia. So I
- 21:15think people are looking for that leadership. They're looking for someone to help the
- 21:18state grow economically so it can protect their jobs. Someone is going to be
- 21:23ruthless against Bynomics and to ensure that American energy independence comes back. And then
- 21:30also someone is going to grow educational attainment, which has to be a top
- 21:34priority for our next governor. Our kids are our most precious resources. There's
- 21:40one candidate in this race that has the experience in all of those areas,
- 21:45and I think as the race gets narrowed down, Dave, you're beginning to
- 21:48see it, especially with some of the reports coming out. You know,
- 21:51there's some candidates that are not going to compete in the final couple months very
- 21:55effectively. I think people are going to look for what that vision is and
- 21:59I'm excited we have the vision and the record to back it up. Nine

- 22:30Absolutely? For a couple of different reasons. First, I'll note that
- 22:34I had called and I asked for flexibility on the date because I thought that
- 22:40the debate was being set too early. The filing period has now just begun,
- 22:44it closes January twenty seventh. We don't know which candidates are going to
- 22:48be in, which candidates are going to be out. There's still a few
- 22:51more weeks for that to change course. And so the first observation was,
- 22:56this was in December when no one is paying attention. I woant have debate
- 23:00when people were paying attention and were visible when you're asked the tough questions.
- 23:04So that was the first seconds. I offered to have some input and ask
- 23:10to have some input on some of the rules. And while I'm sure there
- 23:12was some flexibility provided, and I have great respect for Hoppy, the answer
- 23:18was no, and we weren't really going to have input into the rules,
- 23:22and that bothers me. I don't think that the media should solely dictate what
- 23:26the rules of the road should be for debate. So I was very comfortable
- 23:30say no. I've challenged my opponents to three debates and I'm eager to do
- 23:34that. I think that there's one that's probably going to be coming up,
- 23:37and sometime in early February, after the following deadline. There might be another
- 23:41one coming into the works in March, but I think there was a question
- 23:47of timing, and I asked to have a different date, but the decision
- 23:52had been made, and obviously they didn't care very much to have me the
- 23:55guy that's up by ten to fifteen points. That's fine. We're not going
- 23:59to run our campaign based upon the media. We're going to run it based
- 24:03upon what's best for the citizens of our state. You alluded to the facts
- 24:06or that you feel, and others have said this to not just you,
- 24:08that of the major candidates that are in there on the Republican side right now,
- 24:14that there may be one or maybe more that won't be there by the
- 24:17time the primary roles around. It may Why do you feel that way?
- 24:21Well, I think that as voters start to look at the people with the
- 24:25record, who has the proven record of getting really big things done, and
- 24:29who's just issuing promises, and I think that's what's allowing us to separate from
- 24:33the pack. And so I don't know, I'm not in a competition for
- 24:37second place. I'm running hard to win, So I can't tell you who's
- 24:41going to rise and fall. But I think that what we're hearing on the
- 24:45campaign trail is they want to trust the governorship to someone who has a really
- 24:51rich record, who they know has been out in the arena fighting and winning,
- 24:56and who have to take on some of these tough players on the outside.
- 25:00People know that I've got to fight against Bloomberg and Sorrows and defeated him
- 25:03in court. These other guys they've not tased major league pitching before, right,
- 25:08So it's going to be very difficult for them in order to get to
- 25:12the place where they're able to I think convince people that their records are going
- 25:17to be ready for this upcoming race. But I think there's some good people.
- 25:21I think they'll get some good ideas and Dave, as you know,
- 25:23I've not been negative in this race. I've tried to just put my own
- 25:26positive ideas out there, and so far that's been working pretty well. Give
- 25:32me thirty seconds. Why should people vote for Patrick Morrissey, the current Attorney
- 25:34General, to be the next governor of the stay to West Virginia. People
- 25:37should vote for Patrick Morrissey because I am the one proven conservative running in this
- 25:42race with a record of getting big things done for West Virginia. We're looking
- 25:48to enhance the standard of living dramatically, drive educational entertainment, and fight off
- 25:55the federal overreach and the woke ideas that are trying to harm our backs use
- 26:00here in the Mountain state. There's one person who's been there, who's done
- 26:03that, who's delivered time after time, and you won't have to worry whether
- 26:07he's conservative or not. What can people learn more about your campaign, sir?
- 26:11People can go to Patrickmorise dot com and so that's Patrick Morris CMO R
- 26:18R I S E Y dot com. We have a lot of different items
- 26:22up there. People can look at past articles, people can look at my
- 26:26positions on the issues. I don't think you're going to see the same from
- 26:29some of the other candidates. And excited to spend some time and see people
- 26:33in person, and so Dave, I'm obviously grateful to join you to hope
- 26:37that I might be able to chat with you a little bit on the outside
- 26:41council because that's such a great record. If you have four minutes to catch
- 26:45up with you on that, well go ahead. How about if I give
- 26:47you one minute right now on the outside council, absolutely go ahead. So
- 26:51you might have heard if you're listening to the show, you might have heard
- 26:53of someone who's a political opponent of mine come on the air and spit out
- 26:57a lot of really accurate information and material that I think that's just designed to
- 27:03mislead. We have one of the best outside council records in the country,
- 27:08and I was really proud to come on and talk about it. We made
- 27:11major changes from when Daryl McGraw was in office, where he had fees of
- 27:17thirty three percent to forty percent. We've changed that. Now our average fee
- 27:22for outside council is eight point four percent. It's an incredible number. And
- 27:26nowhere was that more evidence than during the opioid fight, where we negotiated I
- 27:30think one of the best outside council rates in the nation seven point seventy six
- 27:36percent for the state and delivered the best results. So we won the Super
- 27:40Bowl and basically had the lowest kate roster in terms of the state. Now
- 27:45we don't control the level of fees that counties and cities get paid. I
- 27:48thought that should be lower. I argued about that for years and pushed and
- 27:52we can document that. So I wanted people to know that it's important that
- 27:57people in place that care about the taxpayer resources, and we certainly do.
- 28:03And I'm glad you got the chance to talk about that because that's a great
- 28:06record, one of the true accomplishments of our office. All Right, there
- 28:08you go, and Attorney General Patrick Morrissey will have you on again soon between
- 28:12now in the premire I appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to be
- 28:15there. Be safe as you're traveling around today, sir, and we'll talk

- 28:48Attorney General Morrissey for coming on the show. Now. It's no secret he
- 28:52and I have had some differences of opinion of the last couple months, particularly
- 28:56when it comes to criticism of the media and this company. And I mentioned
- 29:00this before a little inside Baseball here. He had called me about a week
- 29:03or so, a week and a half ago, and we were able to
- 29:06have a nice civil conversation for about thirty minutes or so to kind of work
- 29:11some things out. And at the end of the day, you know,
- 29:12I'm the type of guy that likes everyone to try to get along as best
- 29:15as possible, and he and I came to an understanding because the show was
- 29:18not about me. It's about the listeners. And I like to present all
- 29:22sides of an issue, and when it comes campaign time, I want to
- 29:25give everyone an opportunity to get on stage, with the stage being this show,
- 29:29to explain to the voters of West Virginia why they should choose that particular
- 29:33candidate. Over and done with. Now, I wish the AG the best
- 29:37in his race, and if he's elected governor, the last thing I want
- 29:41to do is have an adversarial relationship with a governor of West Virginia, no
- 29:44matter who he or she may be, so there, text says, Dave,
- 29:48every time you have pat on, you ask him the same questions and
- 29:52he gives the same answers. Don't think that was the case today. But
- 29:53I know Pat is an interesting as drying paint. But I don't think you
- 29:56were as unimaginative as conservatives typically are. It's a text, text says,

- 34:32water crisis occurred in Charleston. I was not here at that time. My
- 34:36wife and I were just making a move from Logan County to Tayses Valley.
- 34:38Neither of those areas were impacted. Actually, there were a scant few customers
- 34:42in Logan County that weren't impacted, but not a whole lot. But if
- 34:46you were living in Charleston at the time, chances are you were impacted.
- 34:51Head of the news team, Jeff Jenkins is here. Jeff, good morning,
- 34:53Hey, what's going on? And also a former mayor, then mayor
- 34:58of Charleston, Danny Jones. Are you doing Please don't ever do that voice
- 35:01again. I want to start with a I want to start with a timeline.
- 35:07Mayor. I want to start with you, when did you first hear
- 35:12of an issue? And Jeff, I'll go to you next. But when
- 35:15did you first hear the issue? Danny? What was going on in the
- 35:19Mayor's office that day? Talk about that initial info out four o'clock that afternoon,
- 35:23somebody came over to my office and got me. Okay, what did
- 35:27they say? Said? The water taste like the liquor. Okay, So
- 35:31I went where this guy was and says, I drank it. I smelled
- 35:36it. I knew we were in trouble. And it's like that feeling that
- 35:40comes over you. You know, I've been through some stuff like that before,
- 35:45chemical leaks, and you realize these are these are situations that happened.
- 35:52Where as a leader in the community, you have no power. Your power.
- 35:58The power rests with the people, starting with the West Virginia Water who
- 36:01could have shut the water off if they'd wanted to. But I don't have
- 36:07anything good to say about them, right, So, so what did you
- 36:09What was your first plan of action when you when you got the word that
- 36:14the smell and the taste and everything, what what was your first move?
- 36:16What did you do? Well? I went back to our office and yes,
- 36:22it was there. I'd been in my office and so I could smell
- 36:28it outside. You could smell it outside, and it was like that in
- 36:35my office. Then I went home it was like that at my home.
- 36:37And then next morning, there was a press conference and there was a bunch
- 36:42of people that Earl Ray and I were there and the governor L Ray and
- 36:45he and I were there, and you just you just have to you realize
- 36:51that you're not the one in charge. It's usually when I'm at a press
- 36:54conference as a public official, I'm at my own press conference. Well,
- 37:00I was at somebody else's press conference and they were they were calling the shots,
- 37:05and then I asked them if they could put a timeline on it.
- 37:09They said no, And I sent you a couple of yeah, and I
- 37:14watched those couple of clips from National You did, Jeff, When did the
- 37:17first call start coming in the newsroom here? It was about yeah, about
- 37:21four thirty. It was about four thirty because it was a day after the
- 37:24session started. So the night before we had had the Stay of the State
- 37:28address from Governor Tomblin, and you know, this was a Thursday, and
- 37:32we started to get reports and I think we may have gotten maybe a fox
- 37:36or something of it that do not use order, do not use water order,
- 37:40and they actually had a little The governor had a press event with and
- 37:45that's some of the auto you've been hearing with Western American Water over there on
- 37:49Thursday evening and then again on Friday morning that the mayor was at and we
- 37:53took so we went over as Seanna Johnson went over and staffed it. I
- 37:58was here in the newsroom and she went over in staffed at Thursday evening and
- 38:00then we did the one on Friday morning live. We did that one live
- 38:05on the air, and yeah, that's that's when we started to hear about
- 38:08it. And then you were hearing, you know, do not use What
- 38:10did people do? They went and bought up all the bottled water. You
- 38:15couldn't find any well, you went to uh at Pigley Wiggly, which were
- 38:20I shop, and I remember Jeff just was selling one case to a customer
- 38:27and they had big lines over there to get bottle water. And then we
- 38:30started getting it in. We started getting it. Western American Water bought some
- 38:37water and it was distributed to the fire stations and people were coming in and
- 38:44a lot of people were repeatedly coming in and because I'd stand over their help
- 38:50give it out. And then you'd notice some people, you know, getting
- 38:53in, they were more than their fair share. Stock piloming. When mayor,
- 38:58when did you have your first discussions with Westerrginian, American Water and or
- 39:01Freedom Industries, any of these parties. When did you have your first talks
- 39:05with them? Well, that evening could have been that evening. And the
- 39:15one guy who spoke to King's English and I said, are you sitizens of
- 39:19this Gary Southern? Yeah? And he says, I said, are you
- 39:23sitis in this country? He said no, I'm trying to become one.
- 39:27And they'd owned the company nine days, but they had been associated with it
- 39:32for a long time. And I caught him in a lie, and I
- 39:38realized there's no credibility to be had there. And I'm just surprised nobody got
- 39:49in real trouble for this. I mean, they had to plead guilty to
- 39:52misdemeanors. They got fifteen federal judge sentenced them to fifteen to thirty days in
- 39:59the can And I just was surprised. You would like to have seen a
- 40:01whole lot more than that I expected to. I'm not I'm not the judge
- 40:06and jury, right, Yeah, but when you do that, when you
- 40:08engage in that kind of neglectful contact conduct to affect the whole community. But
- 40:15West Snia Water was part of it. Too. They could have stopped it.
- 40:19And when I said that earlier, you said that you felt they should
- 40:22have shut the water. Yeah, they should have shut the water off.
- 40:23They said, well, we're afraid there might have been a fire. Well,
- 40:27then you can turn it back on. There weren't any fires, and
- 40:30it could have been cleaned up that day, but it wasn't. I mean,
- 40:36the environmental folks could have gotten in there and got that stuff out of
- 40:38the water that day, but they didn't do that, and it was just
- 40:45sad, and you just had this helpless feeling. I remember I was on
- 40:49with Jake Tapper three or four times in a row, and I I'm seeing
- 40:57in in the afternoon and a bunch of my friends in California. They didn't
- 41:00know what I did for a living until until that you kept us secret here
- 41:06in Charleston. Yeah, I never They knew where I was from, but
- 41:07they didn't know what I did for a living, because that's someone I'm out
- 41:10there for and they you're the mayor, you know. And it was it
- 41:19was. It was a very helpless time and it it went on for a
- 41:25while, and I think in some ways it's still going on. I mean,
- 41:29people that live here are still afraid to drink the water, and people
- 41:32that come in here that would remember that or become acquainted with those facts.
- 41:36I won't drink the water. I don't think there's anything wrong with the water
- 41:38myself, but a valance shell On five and I brought you a part by
- 41:43Pinnacle CONSULTANTC the only accredited the commercial lab in West Virginia. Freez Besto said,
- 41:45mold as best as band in some building products, but as a band
- 41:49for all products in the US. Don't expose your family or workers who have
- 41:52bestest mold or lead paint to get with Pinnacle Consultants. As a mayor,
- 41:58Danny of the largest city in Western and you have to be prepared for all
- 42:00sorts of disasters and calamities from you know, floods to fires and so on
- 42:05and so forth. But this was a totally different situation nowause you don't really
- 42:10and I was talking about this with one of my guests, Ms. Cleinich
- 42:14earlier, you don't realize how impactful and how much water that you. I
- 42:21mean, it's one thing not to be I grew up in a coal camp.
- 42:22Sometimes we couldn't drink the water, but we could still cook with it
- 42:25because you boiled out a lot of the impurities and so on and so forth.
- 42:30But to not to be able to use it to shower, bathe wash
- 42:32your hands. I mean, that's a totally different ballgame. Theyre I shared
- 42:37every single day. It didn't bother me. It was col soap. How's
- 42:40it going to hurt you? But I showered every single day. But people
- 42:45were checking in hotels and there's no water on in the in the hotels,
- 42:52or I don't think there were, But it was just that they're paying the
- 42:55big price to stay in the MC suites and you're not. You're not getting
- 43:00what you need. What I learned more about situations like this in ninety five
- 43:05and ninety six when I was Kent Melton's Emergency Service director and in that job.
- 43:13In that capacity, you go around the state and you have meetings with
- 43:19people and sometimes volunteer fire stations, and you go upstairs and you have tabletops,
- 43:27you know scenarios, you work them out what happens, what happens if
- 43:30the train car goes off the tracks and has chemicals full of chemicals and it
- 43:37gets out here. And then you have different people in the room that go
- 43:39through what their role would be. And that's how you learn. And the
- 43:44emergened service director doesn't have a job like you do. They don't come in
- 43:50here do a body of work every day. It's just a continual learning process
- 43:55and that person becomes the go to guy before you know, for resources during
- 44:01the event. But what happened to me was there's nothing you could do about
- 44:07this, and it affected three hundred thousand people in nine different counties, and
- 44:13I became the de facto spokesman for those folks. So my job was bigger
- 44:21than Charleston, not because I'm special, but because it fell to me by
- 44:24default that I would do the speaking for those for those folks, I want
- 44:30to talk about the effort to get out information, Jeff. I want to
- 44:32go to you when we come back right after this. I want to talk
- 44:36about the important role that we played. I say, well, I wasn't
- 44:38here at the time, but that this company played in all that, and
- 44:42Danny about you getting out the information. Plus I have a couple of texts
- 44:44to get to as well. We'll be back right after this and The Voice
- 44:45of Charleston WCCHS brought to you by the Eric Jtar Family Businesses. Eric J.

- 47:19Ry Nicholson's our producer Day. Former Mayor Danny Jones Jeff Jenkins are here
- 47:22talking about the tenth anniversary of the water crisis here in Charleston. Jeff for
- 47:25the news team and Danny for YouTube. Jeff, I'll start with you.
- 47:28So this became a situation where after a while, it's not just about getting
- 47:32the news out, but it's about getting valuable information out to people. Talk
- 47:36about that, well, yeah, because people I remember having doctor Earl goopto
- 47:40on the cred Charleston Health Department Director just a lot. We had him on
- 47:45a lot. We did extended shows right in the afternoon and in the and
- 47:50just have him on about what we knew about. That was the big thing.
- 47:53No one really knew what this stuff was, as Danny said. And
- 47:57then we had all there were all kinds of news conferences. Governor had all
- 48:00kinds of news conferences live that we took on the air, and then we
- 48:05just took We just took calls from people wanting to know things, and we
- 48:08would try to answer their questions, where can they get the water where?
- 48:12You know, what are they supposed to do? You know about you should
- 48:15they shut off their hot water tanks? I mean, you know, it
- 48:16was all those type of things. And you know, I was thinking as
- 48:21Danny was talking, I mean, this story had so many It was that
- 48:23initial you know thing, but then it had well who's Freedom Industries? You
- 48:30know. Then it had the US Chemical Safety Board that came in and did
- 48:34the investigation and found the crack in the tank, and then the tanks were
- 48:37eventually were eventually demolished, taking off the site. They there were the lawsuitsters,
- 48:43a class action lawsuit, and then there was actually then there was eventually
- 48:45several years later payment you know, to residents from the class action lawsuits.
- 48:52So there was just so many. I think at the first it was unknown.
- 48:54People were just concerned and like Danny, I mean, at first,
- 48:59I didn't take a shower, you know, I remember using bottled water to
- 49:02take a shower for at least the first few days. But then you know,
- 49:06I didn't, you know, when I didn't smell it anymore at my
- 49:07home because the Guard played a big role of flushing out all the lines.
- 49:12I mean they were going all through these counties and flushing out the lines and
- 49:15doing the testing. So yeah, there's just so much to it. Speaking
- 49:17of that, I have a textass day. The only sportsperson who could be
- 49:21trusted during the water crisis was Mayor Danny Jones and General James Hoyer. Thank
- 49:24god for the Western Indian National Guard during that time and every other serious issue
- 49:30the state faces. Danny, yeah it, but I was affected like everybody
- 49:35else. Yeah, And this was a situation where you just didn't have any
- 49:39control, and there's you couldn't escape unless you just left left these nine Counties.
- 49:50I remember at the Duratia you remember that. Yeah, it stopped at
- 49:52fiftieth Street in Kenol City. I had a building at fifty third Street,
- 49:57so Sarah and the boys and we all moved on there. I had I
- 50:00had two apartments there and we all just lived there so you could escape it
- 50:04couldn't escape this. It was the classic. And she's no longer in news
- 50:09anymore. Cali Kart, you know she works up to the capitol. She
- 50:13had the classic. Oh I remember that. Yeah, that was great,
- 50:15so so so Gary Southern is out there drinking water, Yeah, drinking bottle
- 50:22of water, having a live presser. I remember this, and she and
- 50:25he says he was done, and she says, no, you're not,
- 50:29No, you're not call Yeah. And I think she was pregnant at the
- 50:31time, I think, and she she was like, no, you're not,
- 50:36No, you're not done. We're not done with you. And Calli,
- 50:38Calli is so sweet and you it just seems so out of character for
- 50:43her, but she was right, yeah, And he was the policy making
- 50:46untouchable. All right. Danny quickly talked about the economic impact of this as
- 50:50we close out today. I mean, it took her because the restaurants were
- 50:52closed. It was almost like the pandemic. To a certain A million,
- 50:55A million dollars wouldn't cover it, not in my opinion. Jeff's got to
- 51:00get back where, Jeff. I appreciate you coming in. Thanks a lot,
- 51:01Thanks loll Jeff, go ahead, Danny, wrap that up. Well,
- 51:05A million dollars was paid to the city, but I don't think it
- 51:08helped any of the businesses that were down. And I'm glad I wasn't in
- 51:13the restaurant business at that time, and you you know, you just kind
- 51:16of shut down, and it was it was just it was just just helpless.
- 51:22Let me read this final Texas, Texas. I still don't trust the
- 51:24water. I buy gallons of drinking water to cook, with cases of bottled
- 51:29water to drink. Ten years later, I still think Tay's Valley YMCA for
- 51:31inviting people to their facilities take showers. After several days of just a water
- 51:36jug sync bath, a full shower was the greatest feeling in the world.
- 51:38I can imagine it probably would be well, yeah, but I took one
- 51:42every day. Yeah I didn't. I'd liquor your none. It's close soap.
- 51:45It's not going to urge. All right, Danny, Jeff, I'm
- 51:49staying on with hop all right, are you coming on top of the So
- 51:52basically we're going to tag you in here, So Danny and Hopy, of
- 51:55course we'll be talking more about the tenth anniversary of the water crisis. Coming
- 51:59up on talk line. My producer Ryan Nicholson, thank you so much.
