- 0:00Part one, the eighth stage. They went then till they came to the
- 0:06delectable mountains, which mountains belonged to the Lord of that hill of which we
- 0:11have spoken before. So they went up to the mountains to behold the gardens
- 0:16and orchards, the vineyards, and fountains of water, where also they drank
- 0:20and washed themselves, and did freely eat of the vineyards. Now they were
- 0:27on the tops of these mountains shepherds feeding their flocks, and they stood by
- 0:32the highwayside. The pilgrims therefore went to them, and, leaning upon their
- 0:37staffs, as is common with weary pilgrims when they stand to talk with any
- 0:41by the way, they asked, whose delectable mountains are these? And whose
- 0:47be the sheep that feed upon them? The shepherds. These mountains are Immanuel's
- 0:53land, and they are within sight of his city. And the sheep also
- 0:57are his, and he laid down his life for them John ten eleven and
- 1:02fifteen, Christian, is this the way to the celestial city? The shepherds,
- 1:11you are just in your way? Christian? How far is it thither
- 1:18the shepherds? Too far for any but those who shall get thither Indeed,
- 1:23Christian is the way safe or dangerous. The shepherds safe for those for whom
- 1:30it is to be safe, but transgressors shall fall Therein Joseiah fourteen nine.
- 1:38Christian is there in this place any relief for pilgrims that are weary and faint
- 1:45in the way the shepherds. The lord of these mountains hath given us a
- 1:49charge not to be forgetful to entertain strangers Hebrews thirteen to two. Therefore,
- 1:57the good of the place is before you. I saw also in my dream
- 2:02that when the shepherds perceived that they were wayfaring men, they also put questions
- 2:07to them, to which they made answer, as in other places, as
- 2:13whence came you? And how got you into the way? And by what
- 2:17means have you so persevered therein? For but few of them that begin to
- 2:23come hither to show their face on these mountains. But when the shepherds heard
- 2:27their answers, being pleased therewith, they looked very lovingly upon them, and
- 2:31said, welcome to the delectable mountains. The shepherds, I say, whose
- 2:38names were knowledge, experience, watchful and sincere, took them by the hand
- 2:44and had them to their tents and made them partake of that which was ready
- 2:47at present. They said, moreover, we would that you should stay here
- 2:52a while to be acquainted with us, and yet more to solace yourselves with
- 2:55the good of these delectable mountains. They told them that they were content to
- 3:00stay. So they went to their rest that night, because it was very
- 3:05late. Then I saw in my dream that in the morning the shepherds called
- 3:10up Christian and Hopeful to walk with them upon the mountains. So they went
- 3:15forth with them, and walked awhile, having a pleasant prospect on every side.
- 3:21Then said the shepherds one to another, shall we show these pilgrims some
- 3:24wonders. So when they had concluded to do it, they had them first
- 3:30to the top of a hill called er, which was very steep on the
- 3:34farther side, and bid them look down to the bottom. So Christian had
- 3:39hopeful, looked down and saw at the bottom several men dashed all to pieces
- 3:45by a fall that they had had from the top. Then said Christian,
- 3:51what meaneth this? The shepherds answered, have you not heard of them that
- 3:57were made to air? By hearkening to Hymenius and Philetus as concerning the faith
- 4:02of the resurrection of the body two Timothy two seventeen and eighteen. They answered
- 4:10yes, Then said the shepherds. Those that you see lie dashed in pieces
- 4:15at the bottom of this mountain are they? And they have continued to this
- 4:19day unburied, as you see, for an example to others to take heed
- 4:24how they clamber too high, or how they come too near the brink of
- 4:28this mountain. Then I saw that they had them to the top of another
- 4:33mountain, and the name of that is caution, and bid them look afar
- 4:39off, which when they did, they perceived, as they thought, several
- 4:44men walking up and down among the tombs that were there. And they perceived
- 4:47that the men were blind, because they stumbled sometimes upon the tombs, and
- 4:53because they could not get out from among them. Then said Christian, what
- 4:59means this? The shepherds then answered, did you not see a little below
- 5:04these mountains a style that led into a meadow on the left hand of this
- 5:10way? They answered yes, Then said the shepherds, from that style there
- 5:16goes a path that leads directly to doubting Castle, which is kept by giant
- 5:21Despair. And these men pointed to them among the tombs came once on pilgrimage,
- 5:28as you do now, even until they came to that same style,
- 5:32And because the right way was rough in that place, they chose to go
- 5:36out of it into the meadow, and there were taken by giant despair and
- 5:42cast into doubting castle, where after they had a while been kept in the
- 5:46dungeon, he at last had put out their eyes and led them among those
- 5:50tombs, where he had left them to wander till this very day, that
- 5:56the saying of the wise man might be fulfilled underreuth. Out of the way
- 6:00of understanding, shall remain in the congregation of the dead, Proverbs twenty one
- 6:06sixteen. Then Christian and Hopeful looked upon one another with tears gushing out,
- 6:14but yet said nothing to the shepherds. Then I saw in my dream that
- 6:18the shepherds had them to another place, in a bottom, where was a
- 6:23door on the side of a hill, and they opened the door and bid
- 6:26them look in. They looked in therefore, and saw that within it was
- 6:30very dark and smoky. They also thought that they heard there a rumbling noise
- 6:35as of fire, and a cry of some tormented, and that they smelt
- 6:41the scent of Brimstone then said Christian, what means this? The shepherds told
- 6:47them this is a by way to hell, a way that hypocrites go in
- 6:53at, namely, such as sell their birthright with Esil, such as sell
- 6:58their master with Judas, such as blasphemed the Gospel with Alexander, and that
- 7:02lie and dissemble with Anoneus and Sophia his wife then said, hopeful to the
- 7:11shepherds, I perceived that these had on them, even every one, a
- 7:15show of pilgrimage, as we have now, had they not? The shepherds
- 7:21yes, and held it a long time too hopeful. How far might they
- 7:28go on in pilgrimage in their day, since they, notwithstanding, were miserably
- 7:33cast away the shepherds, some father and some not so far as these mountains.
- 7:43Then said the pilgrims one to the other. We had need to cry
- 7:46to the strong for strength. The shepherds aye, and you will have need
- 7:51to use it when you have it too. By this time the pilgrims had
- 7:58a desire to go forward, and the shepherds desire they should. So they
- 8:03walked together towards the end of the mountains. Then, said the shepherds one
- 8:07to another, let us here show the pilgrims the gates of the celestial city,
- 8:13if they have skilled to look through our prospective glass. The pilgrims lovingly
- 8:16accepted the motion. So they had them to the top of a high hill
- 8:20called clear, and gave them the glass to look. Then they tried to
- 8:26look, but the remembrance of that last thing that the shepherd had shown them
- 8:31made their hands shake, by means of which impediment they could not look steadily
- 8:35through the glass. Yet they thought they saw something like the gate, and
- 8:39also some of the glory of the place. Then they went away and sang,
- 8:46thus, by the shepherd's secrets are revealed, which from all other men
- 8:50are kept concealed. Come to the shepherds, then if you would see things
- 8:54deep, things hid, and that mysterious bee. When they were about to
- 9:01depart, one of the shepherds gave them a note of the way. Another
- 9:05of them bid them beware of the flatterer, the third bid them take heed
- 9:09that they slept not upon enchanted ground, and the fourth bid them god speed.
- 9:15So I awoke from my dream end Part one. The eighth stage
