- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome to tech Talk Radio. I'm your host, Matt Jones.
- 0:09Speaker 3: I'm not dead, I'm Sean's Weird, I'm Justin Lemmey, and
- 0:14Speaker 3: I'm Andy Taylor.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Good to see that you are not dead. Matt. It's
- 0:18Speaker 1: been a while. How long has it been since you
- 0:20Speaker 1: been on the show.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's been months.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Yeah. People miss you. They say, where's that guy? Matt?
- 0:25Speaker 1: They call in all the time. They don't call when
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm out sick, they call where's Matt.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's because I'm so pretty.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Well. Now they can see you in better quality with
- 0:35Speaker 1: Riverside FM. So there you go. We're all getting a
- 0:38Speaker 1: chance to test this out today. Sean. I liked what
- 0:41Speaker 1: we did last week with it, and it came out
- 0:43Speaker 1: pretty good, very easy to use.
- 0:45Speaker 4: So for I'm like the first comment was, hey, the
- 0:47Speaker 4: video quality's better.
- 0:48Speaker 5: So I mean, even if the layman is looking at
- 0:50Speaker 5: it and going to qualities better. I know that YouTube
- 0:53Speaker 5: and those other places that they can really muck up
- 0:55Speaker 5: the algorithm and then the compression and stuff.
- 0:57Speaker 4: But it looked really good.
- 0:58Speaker 1: You sent me the link to it.
- 0:59Speaker 4: Immediately.
- 1:00Speaker 5: Notice a difference from what we had to been uploading
- 1:02Speaker 5: the Zoom and I know that Zoom was keeping as
- 1:04Speaker 5: it like six forty three twenty or something.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and this is great because I've got the
- 1:08Speaker 3: thirty five hundred dollars Cameraight here, I'm running four K,
- 1:11Speaker 3: so I'm gonna look beautiful.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. So we're we're on kind of
- 1:16Speaker 1: the testing plan for it. Was that a maybe not so.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Beautiful cameras cameras watch your mouth, well I watch your mouth, mat.
- 1:25Speaker 1: But we're you know, we're using the the kind of
- 1:28Speaker 1: a test run for it. Next week. We may even
- 1:31Speaker 1: go with the actual four K version to see where
- 1:34Speaker 1: we It's just the problem is I paid for a
- 1:36Speaker 1: Zoom subscription for a year. It's not up until February,
- 1:41Speaker 1: so it'd be like I'm gonna have to find some
- 1:43Speaker 1: other purpose for it because Zoom is just not delivering.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And when I asked him, I said, wait, we all
- 1:48Speaker 1: have HD. Why can't we, you know, get it in
- 1:50Speaker 1: at least seven to twenty p And they said to
- 1:53Speaker 1: do that, it's about two grand years.
- 1:56Speaker 5: Just straight up, just straight up tell him you're gonna quit,
- 1:58Speaker 5: Just straight up say I'm moving to a different platform.
- 2:00Speaker 4: That's cheaper because your product socks.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just it's just a total tell them that. Yeah.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And you know the thing. One one of the other
- 2:08Speaker 1: reasons I do like Zoom and I will give it
- 2:10Speaker 1: to Zoom is their AI transcription. So afterwards I could
- 2:14Speaker 1: go back and read what the show, what we said
- 2:17Speaker 1: about in the show, and it's it's actually put in
- 2:19Speaker 1: together into synopsis using AI. I don't do it word
- 2:23Speaker 1: for word, but I go through it and I use
- 2:24Speaker 1: it kind of as a as a template. It gives
- 2:26Speaker 1: me the ability to edit.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Well.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Turns out Riverside does this as well, and it does
- 2:31Speaker 1: the clips. So again, I'm really happy so far with
- 2:33Speaker 1: what I've seen. We'll see what we get as far
- 2:36Speaker 1: as the actual with all of us and how it
- 2:39Speaker 1: ends up looking. So yeah, let us know what you
- 2:41Speaker 1: the viewer think about this. Matt. The reason you've been
- 2:44Speaker 1: out is work.
- 2:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Work has been a lot, learning a lot, very quickly
- 2:49Speaker 2: getting spun up. I really am enjoying it. I like
- 2:51Speaker 2: my new coworkers, I love my new shop. I am
- 2:54Speaker 2: having a great time. It is just been thoroughly kicking mckeister. Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and you know it's but it's good. I'm learning a
- 3:03Speaker 2: lot there. I'm learning a lot with stuff I'm doing
- 3:05Speaker 2: on my home lab. I'm I'm in a happy place.
- 3:07Speaker 1: That's good. That's good. And I know justin you were
- 3:10Speaker 1: at last week because it's just been kind of NonStop
- 3:13Speaker 1: for you as your Is you gearing up for a
- 3:16Speaker 1: new season or the wind down? Is that what finds
- 3:20Speaker 1: you busy?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I'm gearing up for back to school,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you know, kids going back to school. We're having to
- 3:26Speaker 3: do a lot of last little yeah, i know, right,
- 3:29Speaker 3: last little day camp things. And then there's obviously days
- 3:32Speaker 3: where I've just i have to watch them the entire day,
- 3:34Speaker 3: and you know, having an eight year old kid running around,
- 3:37Speaker 3: it's uh, you know, yeah, he demands attention all the
- 3:41Speaker 3: time unless you're put him in front of a screen.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So it's a it's a challenge for that. But yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 3: and work side, Yeah, I'm just trying to wind down
- 3:49Speaker 3: the season where we're getting close to the end of
- 3:51Speaker 3: the season here and things are busy. We're you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: off season is kind of where we get busy with
- 3:57Speaker 3: an it. You know, during the season, it's you can't
- 3:59Speaker 3: really do much, you know, you gotta it's pretty much
- 4:02Speaker 3: break fix. But when we get through the off season,
- 4:04Speaker 3: when we're not in operation mode. Yeah, that's kind of
- 4:08Speaker 3: when we get busy.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'm kind of wondering because you do an it for
- 4:11Speaker 1: different groups within an organization, and of course one of
- 4:16Speaker 1: the big things that we're talking about now, we're two
- 4:18Speaker 1: months away now from Windows ten end of life? Have
- 4:23Speaker 1: you getting me? You getting questions from some of your
- 4:26Speaker 1: user base? Are they saying, what do I do? Is
- 4:28Speaker 1: my stuff still gonna work? Is there a misconception that
- 4:31Speaker 1: suddenly their computers won't work anymore? Or are you making
- 4:34Speaker 1: sure everybody's updated? Well, for the most.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Part, we're completely h updated. I mean, there's a there's
- 4:40Speaker 3: a few computers that we have to rely on that
- 4:43Speaker 3: are Windows ten, but we've paid for the extended support,
- 4:47Speaker 3: so we have, I believe, until twenty twenty seven before
- 4:50Speaker 3: we have to, you know, really start thinking about what
- 4:52Speaker 3: we're gonna do here. But for the most part, we're
- 4:54Speaker 3: we're on Windows eleven. Now, you know, there's a there's
- 4:57Speaker 3: a lot of people out there there are still running
- 4:58Speaker 3: Windows ten. In fact, there's that an article I read
- 5:00Speaker 3: about the guy from California suing Microsoft saying that it's
- 5:06Speaker 3: unfairly moving people to Windows eleven. I think his argument
- 5:10Speaker 3: was trying to prepare people for the AI model, and
- 5:16Speaker 3: you know, not really saying that Windows ten is not
- 5:18Speaker 3: a good operating system. He's saying it's a fine operating system.
- 5:21Speaker 3: But you're just trying to want to push everybody to
- 5:23Speaker 3: Windows eleven so you can run your AI models and stuff.
- 5:25Speaker 3: So I don't know that that's gonna be an interesting
- 5:26Speaker 3: one to follow to see if that goes anywhere, But
- 5:30Speaker 3: in terms of my world, we're pretty much on Windows eleven.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Did anybody think it was strange though, that when Microsoft
- 5:37Speaker 3: came out and made the announcement that, oh, well, we're
- 5:40Speaker 3: gonna find different routes for those that are still using
- 5:43Speaker 3: Windows ten and are not able because not everybody can update.
- 5:46Speaker 1: It's not a choice for many people. It's just you can't.
- 5:49Speaker 1: You don't have the equipment, you don't have the TPM
- 5:51Speaker 1: two point zero, you don't have a suitable processor, just
- 5:54Speaker 1: not the right situation for you to be able to update.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And then he came out and said, well, we're gonna
- 5:59Speaker 1: make it so that we can push security updates, so
- 6:02Speaker 1: they still can do it, but push security updates, not
- 6:06Speaker 1: feature updates, but security updates. If you allow us to
- 6:10Speaker 1: use one drive and you connect with a Microsoft account. Now,
- 6:14Speaker 1: if you're like I know most of us, I would
- 6:16Speaker 1: think they use a local account. Suddenly now you're gonna
- 6:19Speaker 1: have to use a Microsoft account with one drive to
- 6:22Speaker 1: be able to get that. Or you could pay around
- 6:25Speaker 1: thirty bucks and get the support for a year with
- 6:28Speaker 1: the security updates. Is it make you feel like, wait
- 6:33Speaker 1: a minute, wait, so you can help us, you can
- 6:35Speaker 1: give us what we've paid for.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I think that's what the the guy with the lawsuit
- 6:39Speaker 3: is claiming. He's like, you are fully able to keep
- 6:42Speaker 3: providing support for Windows ten. You don't want to provide
- 6:45Speaker 3: support for Windows ten. So I think that's where this
- 6:47Speaker 3: guy's lawsuit lies.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I'm also remembering, like back in the day, when they
- 6:51Speaker 2: were doing the initial press junk kits for Windows ten,
- 6:53Speaker 2: they were like, we are moving we are moving on
- 6:56Speaker 2: from Windows eight point one, and there was much rejoicing there.
- 7:00Speaker 2: We're going to go to Windows ten, and I remember
- 7:02Speaker 2: them being like, this is the last operating system from
- 7:05Speaker 2: Microsoft you will have to buy, because we're just going
- 7:09Speaker 2: to keep pushing feature updates and security updates and building
- 7:12Speaker 2: it that way. We're not going to go past Windows ten.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Fast forward to a few years later, they're like introducing
- 7:19Speaker 2: Windows eleven and everyone's like, wait a minute, you told
- 7:22Speaker 2: us we didn't have to do this anymore. This is
- 7:25Speaker 2: not a feature update. This is a whole new operating system.
- 7:29Speaker 1: If we think about it. Windows eleven has been around
- 7:31Speaker 1: for how long, Like was it four years ago that
- 7:34Speaker 1: when it came out that it was actually launched eleven?
- 7:38Speaker 1: So I mean we've had all this time and ten
- 7:40Speaker 1: has worked fine, eleven has worked fine, So why are
- 7:43Speaker 1: they forcing this on the people? If they can do
- 7:46Speaker 1: security updates for a year, they can definitely give it
- 7:49Speaker 1: to everybody and without them having to pay the thirty bucks.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So is it corporate greed? That's going to be a
- 7:54Speaker 1: part of it, especially for companies because we talk about
- 7:58Speaker 1: that thirty dollars for a company that's thirty dollars per seat,
- 8:02Speaker 1: If they want to do that, you know, we're in
- 8:05Speaker 1: a situation where we have computers that run specific software,
- 8:10Speaker 1: specific equipment. They're not saying a word. They haven't said
- 8:14Speaker 1: anything about Windows eleven and what's going to be happening
- 8:18Speaker 1: past October Now? Some people are saying, well, why you
- 8:20Speaker 1: guys even talking about it doesn't really matter. Then it
- 8:23Speaker 1: does from a security standpoint, because we still would hope
- 8:26Speaker 1: that we'd have these security features that you'd be able
- 8:29Speaker 1: to update. Well, if somebody asked me, is this something
- 8:33Speaker 1: that malware bites could do? Could it? Did Matt fall
- 8:37Speaker 1: asleep or did his camera lock up? They froze? I
- 8:44Speaker 1: looked at Matt's camera and I'm like, his eyes are closed.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I think he fell asleep. We are all t maybe
- 8:53Speaker 1: our listeners are doing the same.
- 8:55Speaker 2: I don't know, honestly, Like it froze for a second.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I immediately checked like all my bad and with this fine,
- 9:00Speaker 2: there's no overhead, I can log into my all my
- 9:04Speaker 2: networking gear, and it was like everything's fine. It was
- 9:06Speaker 2: just for a second. Riverside FM was just like, no,
- 9:12Speaker 2: I don't.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Think it's he's and he's gone, Well he'll come back
- 9:16Speaker 1: in a second, all right. Now, we didn't get a
- 9:19Speaker 1: what the heck is it doing to him? All right? So, Sean,
- 9:24Speaker 1: what about you? We didn't get a chance to hear
- 9:26Speaker 1: from you, like what you so?
- 9:28Speaker 4: Well if you want to ask about Windows ten.
- 9:30Speaker 5: So we were told so the university has a very
- 9:34Speaker 5: strict policy on when official support ends you cannot have
- 9:40Speaker 5: a device that's ruined that operates this just about campus.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Oh wow, all right, so they will.
- 9:44Speaker 4: They will.
- 9:45Speaker 5: I'm not joking when I say they will come to
- 9:47Speaker 5: your office, knock on your door and say where is.
- 9:51Speaker 4: This device plugged into this switch, plugged into that port.
- 9:54Speaker 4: It's running Windows ten. That's what they're doing right now.
- 9:56Speaker 4: They're auditing us. Right now.
- 9:58Speaker 5: We have somebody from IT that's here in our office
- 10:01Speaker 5: auditing our entire network stack and checking every computer to
- 10:04Speaker 5: make sure it' scott Windows eleven or the most up
- 10:07Speaker 5: to date version of whatever Linux version we're running, whatever version.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Of mac OS we're running.
- 10:14Speaker 5: Like, if you can't run the most recent version of
- 10:15Speaker 5: mac OS that's been verified or vetted by the university,
- 10:19Speaker 5: it's gone.
- 10:19Speaker 4: It's gotta go. Well now, so it's it's pretty wild.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So my question before we had Matt fall asleep, the
- 10:27Speaker 1: question was could a third party program like malur bites,
- 10:30Speaker 1: e set or any of those programs help provide that
- 10:33Speaker 1: layer of security that Microsoft says, well, you'll lose if
- 10:37Speaker 1: you don't update to Windows eleven.
- 10:39Speaker 5: For a layman, yeah sure, yeah, sure, I mean you
- 10:44Speaker 5: have people still running XP you still for people running seven.
- 10:47Speaker 1: No, I don't know.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I mean XP, Yeah, I don't know about that.
- 10:50Speaker 4: There are still people running it because people.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I have seen I have seen. I have seen countless
- 10:55Speaker 3: YouTube videos of somebody who fires up a VM running
- 10:59Speaker 3: Windows XP and as soon as they enabled that network adapter,
- 11:02Speaker 3: within like thirty seconds, they've got like fifteen pieces of
- 11:05Speaker 3: malware viruses just simply being connected to the Internet. Like
- 11:10Speaker 3: they don't even go on browse anything. So I highly
- 11:13Speaker 3: doubt anyone's actually running XP.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Well that's a good point though, And here's something else too.
- 11:19Speaker 1: If you run Windows ten and you're not connecting to
- 11:22Speaker 1: the internet, it's just to do something within your network
- 11:27Speaker 1: that's not connected to the Internet. You really don't have
- 11:30Speaker 1: to worry about it. At that point you're gonna lose,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you're not gonna get some feature updates, but at that
- 11:35Speaker 1: point you're it's not gonna be too much of a
- 11:37Speaker 1: security risk. We had Windows XP here at the radio
- 11:42Speaker 1: station up until three years ago for doing our music
- 11:46Speaker 1: and playing our automation. It was a system that Google
- 11:49Speaker 1: it actually had bought Scott Studios became Google, and then
- 11:54Speaker 1: of course that's what did it, and it just was
- 11:57Speaker 1: not connected to the Internet. It was connected networking from
- 12:00Speaker 1: the studio to the production room and that was about it.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So we really didn't have to worry about it, I'll
- 12:06Speaker 1: tell you. Making the update to Windows ten was kind
- 12:08Speaker 1: of sweet. It was nice, just a little better. We're
- 12:11Speaker 1: still not connected to the internet, you know, They're just
- 12:14Speaker 1: connected within the network and that's it. So, you know,
- 12:18Speaker 1: I just wonder. I just wonder how many people are
- 12:21Speaker 1: just are fearful that Windows is going away. I did
- 12:25Speaker 1: a TV segment on Monday about this, and there's a
- 12:28Speaker 1: lot of people that are really frightened about it. That
- 12:30Speaker 1: but with these two options, it still makes you wonder
- 12:33Speaker 1: what the heck is going on that couldn't they just
- 12:36Speaker 1: give that to you anyways for the for a price?
- 12:38Speaker 3: I guess, I don't know.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I kind of wonder too about third party companies that
- 12:42Speaker 1: they don't make the software anymore. Somebody was using Windows
- 12:44Speaker 1: ten and they want to start using Windows eleven and
- 12:47Speaker 1: they can't update it, and now they're not going to
- 12:50Speaker 1: be able to use that third party software. I ran
- 12:52Speaker 1: into that with Creative Sweet five point five. I couldn't
- 12:56Speaker 1: get it activated anymore.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Speaking of just you know, Internet in general, I mean
- 13:00Speaker 3: running an old operating system on the internet. Is is
- 13:04Speaker 3: just definitely not something that you should be doing. Uh yeah, No,
- 13:08Speaker 3: like I said to XP or whatever, you want to
- 13:11Speaker 3: keep yourself updated as best as you possibly can. You know, yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 3: I do know people out there are still running Windows seven,
- 13:17Speaker 3: and I guess Windows seven still gets you know, and
- 13:20Speaker 3: that doesn't really get any you know, feature updates. It
- 13:22Speaker 3: might get a few security updates or anything, but it's
- 13:26Speaker 3: just going to go the way of XP. I would
- 13:27Speaker 3: just say, I mean, just just I mean, we talked
- 13:29Speaker 3: about it a couple weeks ago. You know, if you're concerned
- 13:31Speaker 3: about having to constantly buy a new operating system over
- 13:35Speaker 3: and over and over, you know, do what we talked
- 13:36Speaker 3: about a couple weeks ago, run Linux. Yeah, and Linux
- 13:39Speaker 3: is getting so much more exposure now. There are more
- 13:42Speaker 3: people writing about it, more people talking about it, more
- 13:45Speaker 3: people testing it out, showing you know, the different and
- 13:49Speaker 3: we have told people, Sean, you mentioned this last week
- 13:51Speaker 3: on the show, if they have an old computer, what
- 13:53Speaker 3: should they do.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Little Linux on it. I mean, you have an older computer,
- 13:56Speaker 5: some older with with a little bit of extra effort,
- 13:59Speaker 5: most older men can also run Linux. I mean they're
- 14:01Speaker 5: all just running Intel process. There's anyways is Linux Mint.
- 14:08Speaker 5: It's super easy. There are tons and tons of guys
- 14:12Speaker 5: online to just here's how you install it. You can
- 14:14Speaker 5: be up and running in a short period of time faster.
- 14:17Speaker 5: You can faster than you can with Windows. So I
- 14:20Speaker 5: just I highly recommend if you're at least technologically curious
- 14:26Speaker 5: about not running Windows, Linux Mint rufus and you're off
- 14:30Speaker 5: and running.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Sean, you're kind of the Mac guy out of the group.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I think, I don't know justin You're you're not a
- 14:36Speaker 1: Mac guy, right, No, So I'm just wondering, Sean, do
- 14:39Speaker 1: you think this will cause some people to say, em,
- 14:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna go ahead and try Mac.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Oh, one hundred percent. So I have a coworker who
- 14:46Speaker 4: just said, I'm done with Windows. I'm done.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Loved how the M four chips work, sports, everything we
- 14:51Speaker 5: need to do, we're all we mostly have Max at work,
- 14:54Speaker 5: so he was kind of getting introduced with it there too,
- 14:56Speaker 5: but he either runs Linux or runs Mac. He just
- 15:00Speaker 5: kind of got fed up with Windows eleven. The bloat,
- 15:02Speaker 5: the ads, the complications of what I think the co
- 15:06Speaker 5: pilot stuff, and then the recall portion of it kind
- 15:09Speaker 5: of triggered him. In terms of his his vantage point
- 15:12Speaker 5: on privacy and security. So I think he kind of
- 15:14Speaker 5: got spooked by that.
- 15:16Speaker 3: So much better.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Is recall still a thing though? I mean, is that
- 15:20Speaker 1: to me? It was like everybody's talking about it, and
- 15:22Speaker 1: then it was like, eh, I think they recalled recall.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I know you could turn it off.
- 15:29Speaker 5: But Linux, I mean, if you don't like when, I mean,
- 15:33Speaker 5: it is what it is. If you if you're used
- 15:35Speaker 5: to it, it's it's people are gonna use it no
- 15:38Speaker 5: matter what. You're not going to convince the masses to
- 15:40Speaker 5: give it up for privacy.
- 15:42Speaker 3: This is the part where we really needed Matt back
- 15:44Speaker 3: in the conversation right here, because he recently just went
- 15:47Speaker 3: through the whole process of just getting rid of big
- 15:49Speaker 3: tech from his house. I mean, he talked a little
- 15:52Speaker 3: bit about in pre show getting rid of all of
- 15:54Speaker 3: his Google speakers, is Amazon, Alexa's, there was ness, doorbell,
- 16:00Speaker 3: you know, all that stuff, because you know, they're just
- 16:02Speaker 3: it doesn't matter even if you you know, he was
- 16:04Speaker 3: telling me privately, he was like, yeah, you know, we
- 16:07Speaker 3: turned off the we turned off the microphones on our
- 16:09Speaker 3: on our speakers, and we would be having conversations and
- 16:11Speaker 3: yet we'd still get ads based on that even though
- 16:14Speaker 3: the microphones were turned off quote unquote air quotes there
- 16:18Speaker 3: turned off. Now, some some listeners may may may not
- 16:22Speaker 3: know what you're talking about because some of this technology
- 16:25Speaker 3: that we bring into our homes and we we think
- 16:27Speaker 3: it's cool to be able to ask a device to
- 16:30Speaker 3: play a song for us, or set a timer.
- 16:33Speaker 1: You know. I I every night, I set I mentioned
- 16:36Speaker 1: the other day, I set mine to wake up to
- 16:38Speaker 1: a certain song or certain artists every morning, and at
- 16:41Speaker 1: you know, four fifty in the morning. Uh. And I
- 16:45Speaker 1: looked at Glory and I said, man, to think we
- 16:47Speaker 1: used to do this with an alarm clock, you know,
- 16:51Speaker 1: or that old AMFM radio Clay you remember those things.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Now you just do it with your voice. But some
- 16:57Speaker 1: people don't understand that that stuff that they that they
- 17:02Speaker 1: are talking about, suddenly they get ads on their Google
- 17:05Speaker 1: accounts or while they're browsing that were stuff that they
- 17:09Speaker 1: were talking about. You saw this first, sand justin.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Well, yeah, absolutely, yeah. I mean I'll reiterate what happened
- 17:16Speaker 3: a long time ago. I just kind of tested it.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I walked around the house and we had an what
- 17:21Speaker 3: was at Amazon Echo the Alexa, right, and we had
- 17:24Speaker 3: a couple Google speakers, and I'd walk around the house
- 17:27Speaker 3: and I would just casually mention the words Lamborghini Ferrari Portia,
- 17:32Speaker 3: you know, just just randomly. I wasn't talking about them.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I would just say the name Lamborghini Ferrari Portsie over
- 17:37Speaker 3: and over and over for about three days. And then
- 17:40Speaker 3: all of a sudden, all my social media accounts, you know,
- 17:42Speaker 3: read It and Facebook and whatever, my Google ads all
- 17:46Speaker 3: of them were for luxury vehicles.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Wow, and you had not.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Just this past weekend we went to gen Con in Indianapolis,
- 17:55Speaker 5: which is geeming tabletop dice. Literally all of Klans social
- 17:59Speaker 5: media is now dice. In board games, ads, Oliver ads
- 18:04Speaker 5: are for dice. Here's where you can get done.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Well, that's to go.
- 18:06Speaker 3: They track you on your phone.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Well yeah, I know. I'm just saying.
- 18:09Speaker 5: This is the simple It's it's all based on geo tracking.
- 18:11Speaker 5: It's all based on what you've searched for, It's all
- 18:13Speaker 5: based on what you know, you're what you're like on
- 18:15Speaker 5: your friend's profiles.
- 18:16Speaker 4: It's it's all tracked, and I mean an algorithm.
- 18:20Speaker 3: And again it goes back to the old adage. If
- 18:22Speaker 3: you're not paying for the product, you are the product
- 18:26Speaker 3: Google and Amazon. Amazon is a retailer, but for the
- 18:29Speaker 3: most part, Amazon and Google are advertising data scraping companies.
- 18:34Speaker 3: That's how they make their money. They sell your data,
- 18:38Speaker 3: that's how they get their money. So having these cute
- 18:41Speaker 3: little speakers in your home that you can, oh, look
- 18:43Speaker 3: at this, I can play a Spotify song, sure, yeah
- 18:46Speaker 3: you can. But you're also giving them every piece of
- 18:48Speaker 3: your data and and everything that's going on, you know,
- 18:51Speaker 3: in your life. You know, it is a funny story.
- 18:55Speaker 3: And this has I know we're talking about them tracking you.
- 18:57Speaker 3: This has nothing to do with them tracking you, because
- 18:59Speaker 3: you're gonna get it when I mentioned this, but it's
- 19:01Speaker 3: it's not not in relation to this. But we you know,
- 19:06Speaker 3: my little speaker, I have a Google speaker next to
- 19:08Speaker 3: our bed, and I always play relaxing like creek sounds
- 19:11Speaker 3: or thunderstorm sounds. I love those. Yeah, And so I'll
- 19:14Speaker 3: tell it. You know, hey, you know play you know,
- 19:16Speaker 3: thunderstorm sounds for twelve hours and it'll just on repeat.
- 19:21Speaker 3: It'll just keep playing like thunderstorm sounds. And a few
- 19:23Speaker 3: nights ago, I don't know why, but like I think
- 19:27Speaker 3: it was like two thirty in the morning, all of
- 19:29Speaker 3: a sudden, the thunderstorm sounds stopped, and it was like, attention, men,
- 19:34Speaker 3: do you have ED? And I was like, oh my god,
- 19:37Speaker 3: what like in the middle of the night it decided
- 19:41Speaker 3: to play an ad It had never done that before. Really,
- 19:45Speaker 3: in the middle of the night. It was like, attention, men,
- 19:47Speaker 3: do you have ED? Come to our clinic.
- 19:49Speaker 1: And I'm like, I've noticed have you noticed it?
- 19:52Speaker 4: Also?
- 19:53Speaker 1: Okay, So here's the other thing. We talk about our devices.
- 19:56Speaker 1: One of the devices we have in our homes that
- 19:59Speaker 1: we you know, it becomes the cornerstone for entertainment. I'm
- 20:02Speaker 1: not talking about your tablet, your desktop, your notebook, your television.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Your television is talking to those advertisers.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Oh app yeah, I use pie hole, you know the
- 20:14Speaker 3: Raspberry pie.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Does that block some of that TV? Absolutely? It blocks.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Every time my Samsung or LGTV tries to reach out
- 20:23Speaker 3: and call home, it blocks it. And I've I've downloaded
- 20:26Speaker 3: these these lists that give domains for it to block.
- 20:30Speaker 3: And so my TV tries so hard to try to
- 20:34Speaker 3: contact and call home and say here's what he's been
- 20:36Speaker 3: doing with the TV, and it can't do it. Finally,
- 20:40Speaker 3: after a while, the TV it won't even show any
- 20:42Speaker 3: of the apps anymore, and it just it just like
- 20:45Speaker 3: becomes a dumb monitor.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Wow. Now can somebody set up high hole pretty easily? Sean?
- 20:51Speaker 1: Did you set that up?
- 20:52Speaker 4: I set it up on my Synology?
- 20:54Speaker 1: Yeah, me too, all right, and well it us Is
- 20:57Speaker 1: it easy to set up? Can somebody go on line
- 20:59Speaker 1: and get all all the instructions how to do it?
- 21:01Speaker 1: Because I mean you can buys.
- 21:02Speaker 5: You have to be I mean, you have to be
- 21:04Speaker 5: familiar if you're doing it on as analogy with doctors. Yeah,
- 21:08Speaker 5: but alling that way and configuring and you know, understanding DNSS,
- 21:11Speaker 5: and you know, there's a handful of things you have
- 21:13Speaker 5: to under have a rudimentary understanding of. There are guides
- 21:16Speaker 5: if you're if you like you watching YouTube videos and learning,
- 21:19Speaker 5: just watch a YouTube video on it and you'll build
- 21:21Speaker 5: a figure it out.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not too adi. It's a lot easier if
- 21:24Speaker 3: you actually use a Raspberry Pie because basically you can
- 21:26Speaker 3: download an entire image, flash it to an SD card,
- 21:30Speaker 3: pop that SD card into your Raspberry Pie, plug it
- 21:32Speaker 3: into your network, and then just simply point all of
- 21:36Speaker 3: your devices at that Raspberry Pie as it's DNS server.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Because a lot of people at home, they're using you know,
- 21:43Speaker 3: they're they're likely using Google DNS, which again goes back
- 21:47Speaker 3: to the adage. We're talking about. Google's tracking you there
- 21:50Speaker 3: everything you do on your computer. Every time you go
- 21:53Speaker 3: and search for a website, it has to use DNS
- 21:55Speaker 3: to try to figure out what is the IP address
- 21:58Speaker 3: of that website. While if it's using Google DNS, it's saying, Hey, Google,
- 22:02Speaker 3: this guy's searching for you know, Kansas City chiefs or
- 22:06Speaker 3: whatever it might be, you know, and it's going to
- 22:08Speaker 3: start serving you ads based on that.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Now, if somebody's using an antenna, and I know not
- 22:14Speaker 1: everybody can do that, are there's no way that they
- 22:17Speaker 1: could be tracked that way, is there? If they've switched
- 22:20Speaker 1: to antenna mode.
- 22:22Speaker 5: If your TV is a smart TV, it can absolutely
- 22:26Speaker 5: track what application you're using on your oh, unless you've
- 22:30Speaker 5: turned it to the RF tuner, but most of them
- 22:32Speaker 5: have an app that you launched that goes to the
- 22:34Speaker 5: digital tuner. You're not, so it's so it's still your
- 22:37Speaker 5: TV still knows you're watching. You know, you're not changing
- 22:40Speaker 5: it to channel three or channel four, right, you're using
- 22:43Speaker 5: the the live TV mode.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Of course, your TV knows that you're doing that.
- 22:47Speaker 5: It's tracking what how long you've been on e chap,
- 22:50Speaker 5: what app you switched from, in which app you switched to?
- 22:52Speaker 1: How long?
- 22:53Speaker 3: What? What's your volumes set at? What's your color correction?
- 22:56Speaker 3: You know, are you set at the dynamics settings of color?
- 22:59Speaker 3: Do you have HDR turned on? So it's sending everything.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I'm a little older, so obviously I probably pump up
- 23:06Speaker 1: the volume a little more. Got close captioning turned on
- 23:09Speaker 1: so they could tell, Oh, this guy's older, let's pump
- 23:12Speaker 1: them ads for you know, hearing aids, yeah, or arthritic
- 23:16Speaker 1: pain relief, that kind of thing.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yep.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Wow, the world revolves around commercialism. All right, we got
- 23:24Speaker 1: to take a break. We come back with more of
- 23:26Speaker 1: tech talk Radio. A big change was announced. People that
- 23:30Speaker 1: relied on a way to get connected to the Internet
- 23:33Speaker 1: not going to be able to do that anymore. We'll
- 23:34Speaker 1: talk about that coming up with tech talk Radio. I'm
- 23:36Speaker 1: Andy Taylor.
- 23:39Speaker 3: And I'm justin let me. We'll be on the web.
- 23:41Speaker 3: You can find us there at tech talk radio dot com.
- 23:43Speaker 5: We'll be right back now back to tech talk Radio.
- 23:47Speaker 3: All right, So before the break, we kind of teased
- 23:48Speaker 3: upon this, but a major change is coming.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's it's a little bit sad.
- 23:52Speaker 3: It's a little bit nostalgic. AOL the old Internet that
- 23:57Speaker 3: a lot of people used to use.
- 23:59Speaker 1: But Whmerica can online.
- 24:01Speaker 3: Yeah, like back in nineteen ninety nine we had over,
- 24:03Speaker 3: you know, eighteen million subscribers. I used to work for
- 24:05Speaker 3: America Online at the call center. They are now ending
- 24:08Speaker 3: their dial up internet service. Wow, that's that is, they
- 24:12Speaker 3: say at the end of September.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Yep. Yeah, yeah.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Who knew that Skype would be killed off before AOL?
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah, wow, good point. Never even thought about that.
- 24:21Speaker 3: I'm just gonna miss the you know, I mean, it's
- 24:22Speaker 3: gonna go down in history, but I'm just gonna miss
- 24:24Speaker 3: the old dial up sound.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's screeching. Yeah screen.
- 24:30Speaker 3: We used THETI but now we all, now we all
- 24:33Speaker 3: it's nostalgic. You know.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Well I used to I don't know about you guys
- 24:36Speaker 1: with dial up though. I used to connect to BBS's,
- 24:39Speaker 1: you know, the bulletin board systems, and those were a
- 24:42Speaker 1: lot of fun, you know, especially for us in morning radio.
- 24:45Speaker 1: We had a BBS where we connect, share notes and
- 24:47Speaker 1: do all this stuff, and that was a blast. But
- 24:50Speaker 1: AOL was just a great way for your listeners to
- 24:53Speaker 1: reach out and connect with you as well. But now
- 24:56Speaker 1: one thing to make sure of, A well is not
- 24:58Speaker 1: going away, and it has not gone the way apparently
- 25:00Speaker 1: AOL is still there. I still have an AOL email
- 25:03Speaker 1: that I checked the other day. It was like, so
- 25:05Speaker 1: we still you still can use AOL. It just your
- 25:09Speaker 1: dial up. You won't be able to dial up into it.
- 25:11Speaker 5: My earliest Internet memories are tael netting into a luminet.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Bbs, oh my gosh, which.
- 25:18Speaker 4: They still are available. You can still get them.
- 25:21Speaker 5: And I actually have a pet project that I'm working
- 25:23Speaker 5: on that is building my own bbs.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Really like the old school bbs. Yes, wow, that would
- 25:29Speaker 1: be kind of cool.
- 25:30Speaker 5: It's it's it's a I actually bought the domain from
- 25:34Speaker 5: the original owners of it that ran the bbs in
- 25:37Speaker 5: my hometown, and I've been talking to them and we're
- 25:40Speaker 5: in the process of rebuilding it.
- 25:42Speaker 1: So now, what would it be? What would you do
- 25:44Speaker 1: with it?
- 25:44Speaker 5: I mean I would host I would host archival content
- 25:47Speaker 5: from my hometown.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Now a lot of people go on social media to
- 25:50Speaker 1: do that, but this would be kind of nostalgic and
- 25:52Speaker 1: a different way.
- 25:53Speaker 5: To to It'd be a way for those who want
- 25:55Speaker 5: to find it can find it, a creative way for
- 25:58Speaker 5: people to get on the internet, search it out. If
- 26:00Speaker 5: you're interested in this kind of thing, it's gonna be
- 26:02Speaker 5: a very niche thing, right, it's gonna be. But if
- 26:04Speaker 5: you're interested in it, if you know about it, it's
- 26:07Speaker 5: gonna be a cool way to log in, see what
- 26:09Speaker 5: it is, maybe have a conversation, maybe post some content,
- 26:12Speaker 5: maybe back up some stuff.
- 26:14Speaker 4: It's it's gotten some cool.
- 26:16Speaker 5: I don't know, it's very nostalgic for me because, like
- 26:18Speaker 5: I said, it's my very earliest memories of connecting to
- 26:20Speaker 5: the internet.
- 26:21Speaker 1: So oh wow cool. You know. The thing is, I
- 26:24Speaker 1: was just stupid thinking a second ago, thinking well, there's
- 26:27Speaker 1: no ice supports anymore, because that's how we always use.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Somebody talking did what was Yeah? That was creepy.
- 26:37Speaker 4: I heard it in the background.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I was like, wait, what was that? You turned around
- 26:41Speaker 1: a little scared. It's wants to participate in the show.
- 26:44Speaker 1: We were talking about Google, you know, I was thinking
- 26:47Speaker 1: about there's no remember the internal motives. We all had
- 26:52Speaker 1: three hundred bod but there there were external motives. I
- 26:55Speaker 1: wonder if motems are well, obviously people are using it
- 26:58Speaker 1: to connect to the net, to connect to AOL. Now
- 27:01Speaker 1: it's gonna go away. What are these people going to
- 27:03Speaker 1: use that for? Can they still like AOL.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Is the only service?
- 27:06Speaker 2: Right?
- 27:07Speaker 5: There are other deal providers that have services still, but realistically,
- 27:12Speaker 5: starlink it's a little bit more money, but it is
- 27:15Speaker 5: significantly more reliable. They've only had two major outages over
- 27:18Speaker 5: the last year and a half two years that have
- 27:20Speaker 5: been resolved within thirty thirty six hours or so. Realistically,
- 27:24Speaker 5: that's your best option for a way better bandwidth.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Yeah, there are other smaller local a lot of like
- 27:31Speaker 3: co ops that serve like farm communities and stuff that
- 27:34Speaker 3: will provide you with dial up, but a lot of them.
- 27:37Speaker 3: You know, my mom lives in a very very small town,
- 27:40Speaker 3: a town of probably less than a thousand people, and
- 27:45Speaker 3: they actually have a local co op, which means it's
- 27:50Speaker 3: kind of owned by everybody that actually provides cable internet
- 27:53Speaker 3: and cable TV. So even in a small little town
- 27:56Speaker 3: like a thousand people, that can serve that kind of area.
- 28:01Speaker 3: But then when you go out of town, you know,
- 28:03Speaker 3: to a certain range, I don't know what the range is.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Then yeah, you're left with you know, being on cellular,
- 28:08Speaker 3: cellular internet or star Link or possibly dial up that
- 28:13Speaker 3: that company does provide dial up to some of the
- 28:15Speaker 3: farm communities around, but people not able.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Too, and people forget too.
- 28:19Speaker 5: As as the providers jump higher to hire take the
- 28:23Speaker 5: five the five G, those frequencies, those frequencies don't travel
- 28:27Speaker 5: as far. So now you have more cell phone towers
- 28:29Speaker 5: and shorter businesses because you're trying to serve It's like
- 28:32Speaker 5: fifteen hundred feet line of sight from a tower that
- 28:35Speaker 5: serves five.
- 28:36Speaker 4: G ultra wide.
- 28:37Speaker 5: So if you're looking to get that ultra high bandwidth
- 28:40Speaker 5: from a cell phone plan, you're gonna have to just
- 28:42Speaker 5: accept that you're gonna see more cell phone towers.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Now.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I'm wondering, like when you go with options that we
- 28:48Speaker 1: all think about how we have gone on this Internet thing.
- 28:50Speaker 1: And I remember moving from Coachella, California to here in Tucson.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I was so excited because we had you know, it
- 28:58Speaker 1: was a faster connection and it was so exciting. We're
- 29:01Speaker 1: getting right now as I speak in the front yard,
- 29:04Speaker 1: my front yard's dug up because Wired is coming through
- 29:08Speaker 1: and laying the fiber. I took a picture of the cables.
- 29:11Speaker 1: I'll put it up on our blog of the cable
- 29:13Speaker 1: line because they're all gone. So I took off one
- 29:15Speaker 1: of the cones and took a picture of the cable
- 29:18Speaker 1: line itself as they're fishing it up the street. I
- 29:22Speaker 1: don't know, is fiber gonna be really something that I
- 29:25Speaker 1: would say, Okay, time to leave Exfinity and go with
- 29:28Speaker 1: this wired fiber.
- 29:31Speaker 5: I did it one year ago, right I left Exfinity.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Metro Net came around, put flyers hundred ours in six months.
- 29:37Speaker 5: We're gonna have one gig service. Great, perfect, It was
- 29:41Speaker 5: reasonably priced. It was only eighty bucks a month for
- 29:44Speaker 5: one gig. That's really good.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:46Speaker 5: I was paying sixty five for three hundred down but
- 29:49Speaker 5: god knows what my speed was up with Exfinity, and
- 29:54Speaker 5: so I went with metro Net.
- 29:55Speaker 4: It's been great. Maybe one outage since we've gotten it.
- 29:59Speaker 4: The downside. About two weeks ago, he announced they got
- 30:02Speaker 4: bought by T Mobile.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Ooh, so what happened?
- 30:06Speaker 4: Don't know what.
- 30:07Speaker 5: That means for me? Am I going to be a
- 30:08Speaker 5: T Mobile customer now because I've been getting inundated with Hey,
- 30:12Speaker 5: you now have T Mobile because you have Metronet, come
- 30:15Speaker 5: come buy ourself.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I know T Mobile has been in Green Valley.
- 30:20Speaker 1: I know that that's been one of the options for people.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And that's the downside to these companies that we had.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Actually it was a different company completely that was going
- 30:30Speaker 1: to first be coming in here and then all of
- 30:33Speaker 1: a sudden the work stopped because they were going up
- 30:35Speaker 1: the street marketing where they were going to be doing
- 30:37Speaker 1: all the work, and then it stopped. And that about
- 30:40Speaker 1: a month later it was announced Wired was taking it over.
- 30:43Speaker 1: And that's the thing. You never know. They might come
- 30:45Speaker 1: in and be there for a while. One thing you
- 30:48Speaker 1: can say about Exfinity is that it's been there for
- 30:51Speaker 1: a while now. Their new ad campaign or if you
- 30:55Speaker 1: guys have seen this is you know the WiFi is
- 30:57Speaker 1: booming because they're talking about that you can have an
- 31:01Speaker 1: Exfinity account and connect to Wi Fi wherever you're at,
- 31:05Speaker 1: you know WiFi. Exfinity is my my wireless provider. Now
- 31:10Speaker 1: I switch from Verizon to Exfinity. But now I don't
- 31:13Speaker 1: know what's going to happen if I decide to go
- 31:15Speaker 1: with this wired service.
- 31:16Speaker 5: I'm just going to say I caution against like I'm
- 31:18Speaker 5: always skeptical about this and skeptical about that connect anywhere
- 31:21Speaker 5: wirelessly because it's so shady, I think, because you never
- 31:26Speaker 5: know what the access point is when you're connecting wirelessly.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's an infinity access point, but some people's infinities
- 31:33Speaker 4: in their homes.
- 31:34Speaker 5: Just like Amazon tried to do with Amazon Sidewalk, they
- 31:38Speaker 5: allow people to turn on their access points so you
- 31:40Speaker 5: can connect in areas that may or may not have
- 31:43Speaker 5: wireless coverage.
- 31:44Speaker 4: So you don't know where your data is going.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Oh, it's protected and to end decryption, but that's you
- 31:49Speaker 5: never know who's sniffing that.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Thank You can go into your settings and you
- 31:53Speaker 1: can say that you opt out that you don't want
- 31:56Speaker 1: to be able to share your connection.
- 31:58Speaker 4: But either way, realistically, what users doing that?
- 32:01Speaker 3: Yeah, no, there's not a lot.
- 32:03Speaker 4: I mean that's a lot.
- 32:04Speaker 5: There are some people that are like tinfoil hat and
- 32:07Speaker 5: we'll go in and turn all this stuff off, but
- 32:09Speaker 5: the generic user is not turning that.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Off, right, Okay, it's the same thing.
- 32:14Speaker 3: I don't agree with that. As soon as I heard that,
- 32:17Speaker 3: you know, Xfinny was doing that kind of thing where
- 32:19Speaker 3: you can use everybody else's internet and be able to
- 32:22Speaker 3: just connect to their internet, I just thought, Nope, not
- 32:25Speaker 3: not a chance. I'm not letting somebody connect to my
- 32:28Speaker 3: Internet because then I don't know what kind of stuff
- 32:30Speaker 3: they're searching for.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 32:31Speaker 3: They could be searching for illegal content, downloading illegal content,
- 32:34Speaker 3: and then I'm gonna be the one to get pinged
- 32:37Speaker 3: for it because it was on my account. Yeah, it
- 32:39Speaker 3: was on your IP yep, and it was on my IP.
- 32:41Speaker 3: I'm not going to do that now, you know you
- 32:44Speaker 3: We talked about fiber just a little bit. I've had
- 32:46Speaker 3: I've had fiber for ten years, over ten years. We
- 32:48Speaker 3: really got fiber as soon as we moved into this house.
- 32:50Speaker 3: It was from CenturyLink. But then just last year century
- 32:53Speaker 3: Link spun off and they they divided their company, so
- 32:58Speaker 3: century Link Lumen will first off Lumen Yeah Lumen, Yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 3: you know, yeah, they went Lumen, so it was Lumen
- 33:04Speaker 3: and then they spun off Lumen to the commercial side
- 33:07Speaker 3: and created Quantum Fiber for residential. It's still the century
- 33:12Speaker 3: Link Lumen infrastructure and there and their their their glass.
- 33:16Speaker 3: When I say their glass, I mean their fiber because
- 33:18Speaker 3: fiber is made of glass. It's still their glass, but
- 33:22Speaker 3: it's now through a company called Quantum Fiber. And I've
- 33:25Speaker 3: had nothing but great luck with Quantum Fiber and Central Link.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I've had maybe three outages in the past ten years,
- 33:33Speaker 3: so it's actually worked really well for me, So I
- 33:35Speaker 3: like it.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Now, Matt, you're you're running fiber too, aren't you? I am,
- 33:41Speaker 1: And how's your experience been?
- 33:42Speaker 2: I think, like Justin, I've had maybe a handful of
- 33:46Speaker 2: outages in the five years I've lived here.
- 33:49Speaker 1: It's about it versus what you had before, h versus.
- 33:52Speaker 2: What I've had before, and in other places it's just
- 33:54Speaker 2: not been nearly as reliable. But Century Link and now
- 33:57Speaker 2: Quantum here where I'm at, the fiber experiences just been
- 34:00Speaker 2: absolutely phenomenal.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Now, both both you and Justin, You're you're in a
- 34:05Speaker 1: major market. Though you're in a major city, Denver is
- 34:08Speaker 1: Let's face it, it's one of the big cities. Is
- 34:11Speaker 1: there one that stands out as far as a provider
- 34:14Speaker 1: out of all of them? Justin? Are you using that provider?
- 34:17Speaker 3: Well, I mean that that's in a major market. Yeah,
- 34:21Speaker 3: well yeah, Quantum Quantum Central Link is is the biggest,
- 34:24Speaker 3: probably besides Exfinity. But again with the fiber, I mean,
- 34:27Speaker 3: Exfinity does not provide fiber. If you got you know,
- 34:30Speaker 3: Comcast business then yeah, you can get Fiber, but Exfinity
- 34:34Speaker 3: is their cable cable internet, and cable internet inherently is
- 34:38Speaker 3: not the best because you may get great download speeds,
- 34:42Speaker 3: but your upload speed is horrible because you're also sharing.
- 34:46Speaker 3: It's just the technology. It's the technology of cable internet
- 34:48Speaker 3: sharing it. You're sharing it with everybody else. And also
- 34:51Speaker 3: you're also sharing your download. So at thet at peak
- 34:53Speaker 3: times of the evening, you're not going to get the
- 34:56Speaker 3: same download you would if you were doing it at
- 34:58Speaker 3: you know, two in the morning. Whereas Fiber it's dedicated.
- 35:01Speaker 3: It's dedicated up and down to each person everywhere.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Now, as far as motives, where we're at right now
- 35:09Speaker 1: with the technology, I remember, you know, every time there
- 35:13Speaker 1: was some kind of increase, Oh you gotta you gotta
- 35:15Speaker 1: have this motive you have the doxis three, doxas two,
- 35:18Speaker 1: I mean, where are we at now? And then Ethernet
- 35:21Speaker 1: are we in Cat five of Cat seven? Now? Like
- 35:24Speaker 1: Wi Fi seven? Where are we at with that?
- 35:27Speaker 2: So you've got Wi Fi seven is is the new
- 35:31Speaker 2: current Wi Fi standard. Uh and the big jump between
- 35:37Speaker 2: six and seven seven was dedicated to just punching as
- 35:41Speaker 2: much speed through as possible. So I mean, looking at
- 35:45Speaker 2: mine right now, I have I'm connected via Wi Fi seven,
- 35:49Speaker 2: and I'm connected on the two point four gig, the
- 35:51Speaker 2: five gig, and the six gigahertz band all at the
- 35:54Speaker 2: very same time. So I'm using as much as I
- 35:58Speaker 2: can to get as fast as I can. According to
- 36:01Speaker 2: my computer, which is breathing again for right now, I
- 36:05Speaker 2: should be getting like two point three gigs up and
- 36:09Speaker 2: down across Wi Fi seven. Now, what I just read
- 36:13Speaker 2: the other day an article is even though Wi Fi
- 36:15Speaker 2: seven has now been kind of finalized and the standard
- 36:18Speaker 2: has been pushed out, they're already working on Wi Fi eight,
- 36:21Speaker 2: And the difference is seven was just make it go fast.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Eight is okay, We've got to make it go fast down,
- 36:28Speaker 2: make it reliable, make it reachable, make it powerful. So
- 36:31Speaker 2: now we've moved from focusing on speed to on signal
- 36:35Speaker 2: quality and signal penetration, which has always been Wi Fi's downfall.
- 36:39Speaker 1: All right, we got to take another quick break. We
- 36:41Speaker 1: come back with tech Talk Radio. I want to find
- 36:43Speaker 1: out about, if we don't lose you again, your home
- 36:46Speaker 1: lab and what that's all about, and why somebody could
- 36:48Speaker 1: create this and the reason behind it. With more of
- 36:50Speaker 1: tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean to Weird,
- 36:53Speaker 1: I'm Matt Jones.
- 36:54Speaker 3: And I'm Justin. Let me send us an X at
- 36:56Speaker 3: tech talk Radio. We read back, and now back to
- 37:00Speaker 3: tech talk Radio.
- 37:03Speaker 1: One of the big things when it comes to gaming,
- 37:05Speaker 1: of course, was announced It's Gaming Fun the Nintendo Switch too,
- 37:10Speaker 1: and I don't know anybody that got one except for
- 37:12Speaker 1: Justin so far wanted to get your thoughts.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I was lucky, I think. I mean,
- 37:18Speaker 3: you know, obviously it came out and everybody you know,
- 37:20Speaker 3: grabbed it off the store shelves right away, and I thought, okay, well,
- 37:23Speaker 3: this is going to run the same way as it
- 37:24Speaker 3: did with the PS five and the Xbox you know,
- 37:27Speaker 3: series S and X, where I was going to have
- 37:30Speaker 3: to wait, you know, a year for it to come out.
- 37:32Speaker 3: But I was actually running by a best Buy one morning.
- 37:35Speaker 3: I was on the way to work and I stopped
- 37:37Speaker 3: in and I just said, hey, you guys got any
- 37:39Speaker 3: switch toos And They're like, yeah, we got like seventy
- 37:41Speaker 3: five of them, and I was like, oh wow, okay,
- 37:44Speaker 3: I'll take one. So I bought the bundle that came
- 37:47Speaker 3: with the Mario Kart and then also I bought the
- 37:50Speaker 3: Donkey Kong game that that was extra, so I want.
- 37:53Speaker 1: To get think it was.
- 37:55Speaker 3: I think it was like after tax it was like
- 37:58Speaker 3: maybe like six' ten think it, was so, YEAH i
- 38:01Speaker 3: mean it.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Was it, was you, know pretty.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Expensive it was For, eric you, know he'd been begging for.
- 38:05Speaker 3: It he's been wanting it so so, bad and he
- 38:07Speaker 3: really really wanted it and we gave it to him
- 38:09Speaker 3: and he was crying and he just he was so
- 38:12Speaker 3: so happy and wanted to play. It and, yeah he
- 38:15Speaker 3: played it for like a day really and then, WELL
- 38:20Speaker 3: i mean he still plays it every once in a,
- 38:22Speaker 3: while but he's still, like you, know super hooked on you,
- 38:24Speaker 3: Know minecraft and things like. That so it's like IF
- 38:28Speaker 3: i take him out to go play games or, Whatever i'm, like,
- 38:30Speaker 3: hey let's, go let's go over To bruise and let's
- 38:32Speaker 3: play some. Games you want to bring the switch or
- 38:33Speaker 3: you want to bring your, computer and he's like, computer you,
- 38:36Speaker 3: know every single. Time, Computer so it's kind of, like,
- 38:39Speaker 3: well you, know it's so.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Don't get me.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Wrong the switch too is. Good the screen is much,
- 38:43Speaker 3: bigger the quality of the graphics much, better the controllers
- 38:46Speaker 3: are much. Better THE i like how they just click
- 38:49Speaker 3: on now instead of having to slide them on and.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Off that's really. Good the the the kickstand is obviously
- 38:56Speaker 3: way much. Better so overall it's a great new. SYSTEM
- 39:01Speaker 3: i just think, there's just as any new console it comes,
- 39:04Speaker 3: out there's not a lot of games for.
- 39:07Speaker 5: It.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Now it still does run the Original switch, games and
- 39:10Speaker 3: some of The switch games are actually, run you, know
- 39:14Speaker 3: with increased a, resolution like they're, upscaled but for the most,
- 39:18Speaker 3: part you, know most of the games are just kind
- 39:20Speaker 3: of run at the standard. Thing and they're coming out
- 39:22Speaker 3: with some. REMAKES i, mean they're coming out with A
- 39:24Speaker 3: legend Of, zelda you, know all the ones that were
- 39:26Speaker 3: for The, switch Original, Switch they're like remaking them for
- 39:30Speaker 3: The switch to And i'm just, like, yeah that's kind
- 39:33Speaker 3: of more of a. Gimmick SO i think it's gonna
- 39:35Speaker 3: be time will, tell let's see what kind of games
- 39:37Speaker 3: come out for. IT i Think Metro prime four is
- 39:40Speaker 3: going to come. OUT i think there's gonna be a
- 39:42Speaker 3: New Smash. BROTHERS i think that. MIGHT i THINK i
- 39:44Speaker 3: heard a rumor about. That but as it, stands it's
- 39:48Speaker 3: a good, system but there's just not a lot.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Of games for. It, well The Donkey kong won is
- 39:53Speaker 1: the one BECAUSE i used to Play Donkey kong the
- 39:56Speaker 1: arcade game AND i loved. It it was the best,
- 39:58Speaker 1: one you, know going up the adders trying to get
- 40:00Speaker 1: to get to the top and save the. Princess And
- 40:04Speaker 1: i've Not i've not found found a stand up for that.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Either so just to be able to Play Donkey.
- 40:09Speaker 3: KONG i think this is not the same kind Of
- 40:12Speaker 3: Donkey kong that you would think. This This Donkey kong
- 40:15Speaker 3: is more Like Super Mario. Galaxy it's open. World you're
- 40:20Speaker 3: smashing through, things you're smashing into you, know the, ground
- 40:24Speaker 3: and you're digging your own tunnels in the. Ground it's
- 40:26Speaker 3: it's kind of like it's it's it's a different style
- 40:28Speaker 3: of open. World it's very very. Interesting i've never seen
- 40:31Speaker 3: anything like. It you can kind of forge your own
- 40:34Speaker 3: way through the. Level you don't have to run along
- 40:36Speaker 3: the beaten path as per. Se you can literally punch
- 40:39Speaker 3: your way through a wall and then connect up with
- 40:41Speaker 3: the next part of the level way down the. Line
- 40:44Speaker 3: so it's kind of like this giant, sphere uh inside
- 40:47Speaker 3: of a, game and it's completely destructible and every sort
- 40:51Speaker 3: of every sort of, way and you can just kind
- 40:54Speaker 3: of complete the level how you want to complete the.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Level so that's kind of interesting about, it but it's
- 40:57Speaker 3: also it's a little confusing unless you know what you're.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Doing. WELL i know that you have to bounce, out
- 41:02Speaker 1: but before you, DO i wanted to tell you A
- 41:04Speaker 1: Turtle beach made an announcement if you saw, this they're
- 41:07Speaker 1: putting out a budget headset for The Switch, too go
- 41:11Speaker 1: to be Out september, third AND i, thought oh, cool,
- 41:14Speaker 1: right how much is it gonna be seventy eighty? Dollars
- 41:17Speaker 1: twenty seven? Dollars? What, yeah twenty seven. Bucks it's a wired,
- 41:22Speaker 1: headset it's not, wireless but twenty seven to twenty eight,
- 41:25Speaker 1: bucks making it very. Affordable so you've invested the money
- 41:29Speaker 1: in The Switch, too and now you can have a
- 41:32Speaker 1: headset to go with. It so also that works out pretty. Good, anyway,
- 41:36Speaker 1: listen hopefully you'll be able to join us next week
- 41:38Speaker 1: BECAUSE i know you you got to bounce, out but
- 41:40Speaker 1: now we want to find out about the home. Lab
- 41:43Speaker 1: so justin thanks, again And, matt can you tell us
- 41:45Speaker 1: about your home?
- 41:46Speaker 2: Lab, absolutely my wayward little, CHILD i will be on
- 41:55Speaker 2: all that BEFORE i have such a love hate relationship
- 41:59Speaker 2: with this thing at this. Point, like so back WHEN
- 42:04Speaker 2: i first started, THIS i was, Like i'm going to
- 42:06Speaker 2: use this as a learning. Experience i'm going to repurpose old,
- 42:08Speaker 2: hardware and kept going through iterations Where i'd, like get
- 42:12Speaker 2: to a certain, point break the whole thing have to.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Restart like at one POINT i was, Like i'm going
- 42:18Speaker 2: to do this via ansible and terror. Form it's gonna work, great,
- 42:22Speaker 2: right and THEN i pushed an update that destroyed the
- 42:25Speaker 2: entire Open ssh stack across every machine AND i could
- 42:29Speaker 2: no longer log into any of. Them, ooh like all,
- 42:32Speaker 2: right so we're going to start, again And i'm going
- 42:34Speaker 2: through and going, through and THEN i started. REALIZING i was, like,
- 42:37Speaker 2: this this one node is being really really, weird and it.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Was it was like a ten year old. MACHINE i
- 42:42Speaker 2: ran some checks on, it and it was it was.
- 42:45Speaker 2: Dying so the lab now currently consists of A lenovo
- 42:50Speaker 2: Think Center mini an Old Dell. OptiPlex i got both
- 42:55Speaker 2: of those Off. eBay they're refurbished for really. INEXPENSIVE i
- 42:58Speaker 2: don't want to say cheap. Inexpensive there's an Actual eBay
- 43:02Speaker 2: store The Nevada school for The blind and they referb
- 43:06Speaker 2: hardware and sell it, out and it's a way they make.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Money but it's great hardware at a really low. Cost
- 43:13Speaker 2: so it's those two nodes and now A synology Nass
- 43:18Speaker 2: synology nine three plus with four drives two or fourteen,
- 43:26Speaker 2: terabytes two or three, terabytes two to one terabyte solid
- 43:30Speaker 2: state drives for a, pool and thirty two gigs. Around
- 43:34Speaker 2: SO i made this little box. Beefy and the REASON
- 43:37Speaker 2: i did all this is because NOW i have gotten
- 43:41Speaker 2: rid of all of The nest devices in my. HOUSE
- 43:45Speaker 2: i have replaced them with Either bluetooth speakers or real link.
- 43:48Speaker 2: CAMERAS i now have living on one of those little
- 43:53Speaker 2: machines is A docker container running this cool program Called.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Frigate frigate ingests all of the streams from those cameras
- 44:05Speaker 2: and saves all that data to My sonology. Drive so
- 44:09Speaker 2: it's kind of the equivalent of you, know The nest,
- 44:14Speaker 2: monitoring AND i can access that internally or. Externally and
- 44:18Speaker 2: then my project for this week IS i have a
- 44:22Speaker 2: replacement for one of those machines coming. In that's a
- 44:24Speaker 2: bit beef. Here along with these are really cool. Chips
- 44:27Speaker 2: they're really hard to. Find Their google coral chips and
- 44:31Speaker 2: their machine learning, chips and those will go into the new,
- 44:35Speaker 2: machine which has kind of an ANTIQUATED, gpu But i'll
- 44:38Speaker 2: be setting up AN ai detection, system so the machine
- 44:42Speaker 2: learning chips will handle so, sorry THE gpu will handle
- 44:46Speaker 2: decoding the frames from the streams, right and then those
- 44:49Speaker 2: chips will actually use machine learning to identify like, cars license,
- 44:55Speaker 2: plates people, faces things like, that and frigate will tie
- 44:59Speaker 2: in To Home assistant and then push all those alerts to.
- 45:03Speaker 1: Me so if somebody comes to your door that it,
- 45:05Speaker 1: recognizes it would, say, oh this is Your Aunt betty
- 45:09Speaker 1: coming to.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Visit and because of HOW i have the camera set,
- 45:12Speaker 2: up it would be Like Aunt betty is walking up
- 45:14Speaker 2: your front. Drive Aunt betty just rang the, Doorbell Aunt
- 45:19Speaker 2: betty just pulled a hatchet out of her, purse And
- 45:22Speaker 2: Aunt betty looking through some things With Uncle, joseph and
- 45:25Speaker 2: you should probably call the.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Cops oh, man this is. Cool so you're really training
- 45:30Speaker 1: your OWN ai to, do so you're not counting on
- 45:34Speaker 1: all these other. Experiences it Is MATT'S. Ai, yes that's.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Kind of where we're starting with. It and THEN i
- 45:43Speaker 2: was using CHAT gpt as kind of my second brain
- 45:46Speaker 2: AND i was, like, hey what.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Else could we do with?
- 45:48Speaker 2: This Like i've got all this, Equipment like how much
- 45:52Speaker 2: farther can we push? This So i'm going to start
- 45:55Speaker 2: installing my OWN llm on, there my own large language,
- 45:59Speaker 2: model you, know grab some of the open source, ones
- 46:02Speaker 2: AND i really want to drive to the original idea
- 46:08Speaker 2: of a smart, home like where you you do have
- 46:12Speaker 2: all these features that we have in smart homes now
- 46:14Speaker 2: through Like google Or alexa or who Or apple or.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Whoever BUT i want to own all the data there you.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Go and this all came about WHEN i was upgrading
- 46:25Speaker 2: the home network AND i installed A unify Sorry Ubiquity
- 46:30Speaker 2: Unify cloud, gateway AND i looked at some of the
- 46:33Speaker 2: stats AND i was, like how AM i uploading sixty
- 46:36Speaker 2: gigs of data To google a?
- 46:38Speaker 5: Day?
- 46:39Speaker 2: Boa and THEN i looked AND i was, like all
- 46:41Speaker 2: These nest cameras are constantly pumping all that. FOOTAGE i was,
- 46:45Speaker 2: like and as soon as it goes up, THERE i
- 46:47Speaker 2: don't own it. Anymore that's. True, Yeah and there's a
- 46:51Speaker 2: there's actually there was a news article just the other
- 46:53Speaker 2: day that came out That ring said that they are
- 46:57Speaker 2: just going to allow law enforcement access to footage that
- 47:01Speaker 2: they hold without a warrant because it's their footage even
- 47:06Speaker 2: though it's from your house and your. Device the terms
- 47:10Speaker 2: of service say that when it's, uploaded that's now their
- 47:12Speaker 2: footage and they can allow access as they. Please so
- 47:15Speaker 2: they're going to give warrantless information to surveillance footage from
- 47:18Speaker 2: all those cameras that they have to law. Enforcement and
- 47:21Speaker 2: the MOMENT i saw, THAT i was, like not THAT
- 47:23Speaker 2: i have anything.
- 47:23Speaker 1: To, hide but, No i've Had i've had law enforcement
- 47:27Speaker 1: come to the house Because i'm one of the FEW
- 47:29Speaker 1: i think that has a camera system that is visible
- 47:33Speaker 1: from the street there and they've come asking if they
- 47:35Speaker 1: could look at my, footage you, Know AND i mean
- 47:38Speaker 1: that's something that the law enforcement they, yeah they want
- 47:41Speaker 1: to be able to do. That so very interesting how
- 47:44Speaker 1: that's gonna work? Out? Now has this been kind of
- 47:46Speaker 1: a pain to set? Up do you get help in
- 47:49Speaker 1: the coating on? This so.
- 47:52Speaker 2: It has been a titanic pain to set Up, Initially
- 47:57Speaker 2: the biggest change was honestly WHEN i got this synology
- 48:00Speaker 2: in there.
- 48:01Speaker 1: There.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Uh their container management solution is very intuitive and made
- 48:06Speaker 2: things a lot, easier especially with like intra container networking
- 48:10Speaker 2: was SOMETHING i kept tripping up on.
- 48:13Speaker 1: For THE it.
- 48:14Speaker 2: People just remember if it's NOT, dns it absolutely IS.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Dns SO i kept HAVING dns, issues but CHAT gpt
- 48:23Speaker 2: was helpful in walking me through some some definite stumbling.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Blocks my My yamel game for yamal files has definitely
- 48:33Speaker 2: gotten a lot, STRONGER uh and just my my General
- 48:37Speaker 2: linux And docker. Knowledge it's been a great learning. Experience
- 48:40Speaker 2: at this, Point i've got a unified cloud, GATEWAY i
- 48:45Speaker 2: have a core. Switch the whole house is Wired cat
- 48:48Speaker 2: Six cat SIX. A i've got two point five gig
- 48:52Speaker 2: edge switches in three different places WHERE i need wired.
- 48:55Speaker 2: USAGE i upgraded the access points To UNIFY u seven,
- 49:02Speaker 2: pros so those all have a two point five gig
- 49:05Speaker 2: uplink to the two point five gig. Switch so that's
- 49:09Speaker 2: the networking, stack and THEN i ran through the the
- 49:12Speaker 2: home labs stack. Earlier BUT i basically have a small
- 49:16Speaker 2: to medium grade enterprise set up in my house that's
- 49:20Speaker 2: way overpowered for WHAT i. Need and Tonight i'm going
- 49:23Speaker 2: to install A minecraft server just BECAUSE i.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Can oh, nice, nice could you host your own server
- 49:29Speaker 1: for outside? Connections, absolutely.
- 49:33Speaker 2: There are several things That i've set up that you
- 49:38Speaker 2: KNOW i can access OUTSIDE i actually one of them
- 49:42Speaker 2: IS i did set up my OWN plex, server so
- 49:45Speaker 2: that has been. GREAT i, know hypothetically one could use
- 49:51Speaker 2: us net to populate THAT plex server with. Material again purely,
- 49:56Speaker 2: hypothetically But i've got a couple of different programs that
- 49:59Speaker 2: are all all interconnected VIA api. Calls so you, know
- 50:03Speaker 2: IF i want, to you, know dump a file in,
- 50:07Speaker 2: somewhere it grabs it from a, monitor file, location renames,
- 50:11Speaker 2: it moves it to the proper, place indexes, it uploads
- 50:14Speaker 2: it To. Plex Like I've i've had a lot of
- 50:17Speaker 2: fun and there's a lot more THAT i want to still. Do,
- 50:20Speaker 2: Uh gryfana and, Uh i'm gonna Use graffana to build
- 50:25Speaker 2: a nice little. Dashboard i've got a monitor set up.
- 50:27Speaker 2: There But gryfana is mean. Man, well maybe if you
- 50:32Speaker 2: get a, chance you could send us some. Links we
- 50:34Speaker 2: could share it on the blog if our listener will
- 50:35Speaker 2: look more into this about trying it. Themselves, absolutely and
