- 0:07On October 4th, 1967, the St. Louis Cardinals face the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for Game 1 of the 1967 World Series.
- 0:15This is the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers Pee-wee Reese and Harry Carey.
- 0:20Over 200 million listeners in today's game. This game is about ready to start.
- 0:26And it will give me a great deal of pleasure to turn this over to a fellow that's really a pro behind this mic.
- 0:35He's been doing the games for the St. Louis Cardinals since 1946.
- 0:39And I always enjoy listening to him. I get him quite a bit at my home in Louisville, Kentucky.
- 0:44None other than Harry Carey. Come on in, Harry.
- 0:47Thank you very much, Pee-wee. All set to play baseball here.
- 0:51You know, it's a strange thing. The outstanding ball player on the 46 Red Sox was Ted Williams, the left fielder, this year.
- 1:01In 67 is their left fielder, Carl Yostremski.
- 1:04In 46, the outstanding Cardinal was their first baseman, Stan Yosef.
- 1:08And so it is this year, Orlando's the fated first base.
- 1:12Let's pause here 10 seconds now for station identification.
- 1:17Saratoga, the authentic fishy behind the yellow label.
- 1:23The only mixer we know of that people built a city just to be near.
- 1:28Bill Edwardson here twice a day, seven in the morning and one in the afternoon.
- 1:32Here are WGY and WGFMs connected.
- 1:37The Red Sox need I tell you have just taken the field.
- 1:41Dalton Jones in third base, Rico Petroselli in short style, Jerry Adair in second base, George Scott in first base, rolling the practice ball around.
- 1:52Jose Santiago kicking at the rubber as he gets ready to make his first practice pitch to Russ Gibson behind the plate.
- 1:59In left field is Carl Yostremski.
- 2:01In center field is Reggie Smith.
- 2:04And in right field is Ken Harrelson.
- 2:06You know a year ago they said that Jerry Adair talked his way out of a share of the World Series.
- 2:12Remember then he was with the Baltimore Orioles.
- 2:14He said to them in effect, either play me or trade me.
- 2:17They traded him.
- 2:19Baltimore went on and won the American League pennant, won the World Series.
- 2:23Adair was not there to get any share of it.
- 2:26But this year he winds up with the team that is in the World Series playing second base for the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:33Lou Brock ready to lead off a first ball hitter.
- 2:37He stole 52 bases during the season.
- 2:40You know every one of the nine St. Louis starters has had World Series experience.
- 2:46None of the nine Red Sox starters today have ever figured in the World Series.
- 2:52So let's see if experience really makes any difference in a short series.
- 2:57It will be Brock, Flood, and Marist coming up on the first inning for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 3:01The Cardinals won their pennant handily by ten and a half games over the second place Giants.
- 3:06The Red Sox are one of the most memorable, most dramatic finishes in any league's history, and certainly the American League's.
- 3:14One on the final day by one game over the Detroit Tigers.
- 3:18The 1967 World Series is about to start.
- 3:21Lou Brock has stepped into the batter's box.
- 3:23The Commissioner of Baseball, William Eckert, has already thrown out the first ball.
- 3:27They're playing Brock, I notice, Yastrowski far over towards center field.
- 3:32They give him the left field corner.
- 3:34I imagine with that short left field fence they'll play practically all hitters that way.
- 3:38Jose Santiago from Puerto Rico into the windup.
- 3:42The World Series is under way.
- 3:43The first pitch sunk, and he missed the curve ball.
- 3:46Strike one.
- 3:47So Lou Brock, a first ball hitter, did go after the first pitch.
- 3:51A breaking ball, and he swung and he missed.
- 3:53And so it's one strike, no ball.
- 3:57Santiago's pitch.
- 3:58It's a fastball high and outside.
- 4:00John Stevens of the American League behind the plate.
- 4:04The count evens up.
- 4:07One ball, one strike.
- 4:09Bright sunshine at Fenway Park.
- 4:12The sky, a blanket of azure blue.
- 4:15Sleeced here and there with little white clouds.
- 4:17The windup, the pitch to Brock.
- 4:20A looper into left field.
- 4:21It's a base hit, the first hit of the series.
- 4:23Lou Brock loops one into short left field.
- 4:26And Lou made up his mind to go the opposite way and succeeded against Jose Santiago.
- 4:33So Lou Brock is on, and here's Kurt Floch.
- 4:36He, with this fella, loves to hit the ball to the opposite field.
- 4:40And he, like you did, had to work hard at mastering that net.
- 4:44Well, I'm anxious to see Brock, Lou Brock at first base.
- 4:49They say he likes to go and he'll run right away.
- 4:52So better watch him.
- 4:53Let's see if he will.
- 4:54The stretch.
- 4:55There he goes.
- 4:56Very first pitch.
- 4:57There's a throw.
- 4:58He is.
- 4:59Safe.
- 5:00He's stolen.
- 5:01And boy, I'll say this.
- 5:02This Gibson got the ball away in a hurry and his throw was there, but Lou Brock just simply outran him.
- 5:08And Lou Brock has started the ball game in typical Cardinal fashion.
- 5:13He singles to left field and on the first pitch he steals second.
- 5:16This will give you a little bit of an idea about the abandon with which the Cardinals play baseball.
- 5:21There might be pressure in the World Series, but you wouldn't know it.
- 5:25This is the way Brock played all day long.
- 5:27In the very first pitch usually he'd go and he did again.
- 5:30Here's Floch now, a man on second base and nobody on.
- 5:33Floch who likes to hit the ball to the opposite field.
- 5:35The stretch by Santiago.
- 5:37The count is ball one.
- 5:38The pitch.
- 5:39He did try to hit the right field and he sliced a foul back to the screen and it evens it up on the ball and a strike.
- 5:45The sun is so bright that it's difficult to determine the ball and strike count on the board because the lights actually don't show as a result of the bright sunshine.
- 5:56One ball, one strike.
- 5:57Fenway Park, a mass of humanity.
- 6:00Whatever you can possibly jam into a ball park this size, they've got here.
- 6:05One ball, one strike, Kurt Floch the hitter.
- 6:08Brock, who very rarely tries to steal third by the way.
- 6:12The stretch.
- 6:13The pitch to Floch.
- 6:14By Santiago.
- 6:15Here it is.
- 6:16He was going to bunt it.
- 6:17It hit the bat.
- 6:18It did.
- 6:19He meant to hold up.
- 6:20The pitch was high.
- 6:21A bad ball.
- 6:22And he tried to pull back but it hit the bat for a strike two on a foul tip that he did not mean to do.
- 6:29Two strikes and a ball.
- 6:31Floch and the whole Roger Maris will be next.
- 6:33With Brock at second base barring a line drive double play it means that Floch, Maris and Sepeta will have a shot at driving in the run.
- 6:41Kurt Floch straddles a play to hit 335 at a banner year.
- 6:46Five homers and 50 RBI.
- 6:49Here's the stretch.
- 6:50The pitch to the right handed batter.
- 6:52And there's a dare going behind the bag the pitch.
- 6:55Curve ball.
- 6:56Fake free call.
- 6:58There is a big off.
- 7:00What an able to advance play.
- 7:02It was full on a curve ball.
- 7:04And there's one away.
- 7:06Here's Roger Maris.
- 7:08No stranger to Fenway Park.
- 7:10Veteran of some years of the America League.
- 7:14Nine homers during the regular season.
- 7:1755 runs batted in.
- 7:18He hit 261.
- 7:20His average is not indicative of his worth.
- 7:23He was one of the key members of the Cardinals.
- 7:26Many a game winning hit.
- 7:27Especially early in the season when the pennant was in contention.
- 7:32So Brock at second base with one out the stretch by Santiago.
- 7:36From the belt the pitch.
- 7:38Maris takes a fastball high.
- 7:40One ball no strikes.
- 7:43Flood who is usually very, very successful at advancing a man.
- 7:48Failed against Santiago here in the first inning on a good sharp breaking curve ball that fooled him.
- 7:55One ball no strikes.
- 7:57Roger Maris waits.
- 7:58They play him straight away and deep.
- 8:01He always loved to hit in this ball park as a Yankee.
- 8:04Out of pitch.
- 8:05And here it is.
- 8:07Third ball.
- 8:08Cut the corner at the belt.
- 8:10And Santiago's curve is not a big one.
- 8:12It's quick.
- 8:14And he's been able to hit that corner so far.
- 8:17One ball one strike.
- 8:18Runner in scoring position.
- 8:20Top of the first no score.
- 8:22The first game of the World Series from Fenway Park, Boston.
- 8:25On a beautiful afternoon.
- 8:28Out of signal.
- 8:29Santiago glances at second.
- 8:31Petracelli holds Brock close.
- 8:33And the pitch to Maris.
- 8:35Fast ball outside.
- 8:37Ball two.
- 8:38When Brock is on base, it isn't only what he does before running.
- 8:43It's the distraction that he affords to the pitcher.
- 8:47And what he does to the infield.
- 8:49For example, Petracelli and Adair have been taking turns.
- 8:52Actually, they've been out of position as a result.
- 8:56And that's what a fellow like Brock can do to you by getting on base.
- 9:01Now then you pitch to Roger Maris.
- 9:03Two balls and a strike.
- 9:05The glance at second.
- 9:06Petracelli holding him close.
- 9:08And Santiago steps back off the rubber.
- 9:11The breeze, the wind is not any factor today.
- 9:13Here's the stretch.
- 9:15The pitch.
- 9:16And he takes outside and high.
- 9:18And the count ball three.
- 9:20Three balls and a strike.
- 9:22Brock faked as if to make a delayed attempt to steal.
- 9:25And Gibson was ready to fire.
- 9:27Gibson the catcher of the red side.
- 9:30Three balls and a strike.
- 9:32And here's Schultz coaching at third base for the Cardinals.
- 9:35He controls the hit or take sign to Maris.
- 9:38Dick Sissler coaching at first base.
- 9:40Here's Santiago getting ready.
- 9:42Brock a lead at second base.
- 9:44There's the glance back.
- 9:46And the pitch.
- 9:47He walked in ball four.
- 9:49And so the Cardinals candidate for the National League's most valuable player,
- 9:55who had himself a banner year with 111 runs batted in,
- 9:58and had a 325 homers, hit 325, Orlando Cepeda comes up to face his friend from Puerto Rico,
- 10:07but right now baseball enemy, Orlando, digging in.
- 10:13Stay in state.
- 10:14Runners are at first and second one out.
- 10:17Cepeda is a double play possibility because he doesn't get away from the plate well,
- 10:23and he has good straightaway speed once he gets started.
- 10:28The reason that he's a double play possibility is because he hits the ball so sharply.
- 10:33There's the stretch.
- 10:35From the belt to pitch, it's a fastball inside.
- 10:38One ball, no strikes.
- 10:40Runners at first and second.
- 10:41In the National League, the opposition tried to jam Cepeda.
- 10:46Fastball's in on his fist.
- 10:49One ball, no strikes.
- 10:50Runners at first and second.
- 10:51Orlando waiting.
- 10:53Santiago glances back.
- 10:54Here's the pit.
- 10:56Inside ball two, McCarver waiting to hit next.
- 11:00And Santiago having trouble.
- 11:03We're in the top of the first inning with no score.
- 11:05Runners are at first and second with one out.
- 11:10Orlando Cepeda digging in.
- 11:13Jose Santiago, who had a fine season winning 12, losing 4 for the Red Sox.
- 11:19Stockley built right-hander.
- 11:21Two balls and nothing.
- 11:22Runners at first and second.
- 11:24Now the signal.
- 11:26The glance back.
- 11:27Maris, a long lead at first base.
- 11:29And the pitch to Cepeda.
- 11:31Oop, he steps back off the rope.
- 11:33Brock continues to dance around at second base.
- 11:38Now Cepeda digs in.
- 11:40The stretch.
- 11:41From the belt.
- 11:42A dare.
- 11:44Jogging around the pitch.
- 11:45Swung high-pop file back.
- 11:46Out of play.
- 11:47In the stand.
- 11:48Gibson chases it, but no chance.
- 11:51The ball into the stands on the first base side.
- 11:54Saw the count, two balls, and the strike.
- 11:56With two balls, no strike.
- 11:58Santiago threw a fastball.
- 12:00Jams Cepeda with it and he got around late.
- 12:03The count, two balls, and a strike.
- 12:05The outfield, deep everywhere.
- 12:07Cepeda the hitter.
- 12:08Maris at first base.
- 12:09Scott doesn't hold him on.
- 12:11Plays deep.
- 12:12Brock at second base.
- 12:13Petraselli and Adair have been doing an excellent job of holding him close.
- 12:18Two balls, one strike.
- 12:19There's Petraselli behind Brock.
- 12:21The pitch.
- 12:22Swung and he fouled it back to the screen.
- 12:24He had a good cut.
- 12:25He was trying to go to the opposite field.
- 12:27That evens it up.
- 12:28And so it's two balls, two strikes.
- 12:31The ball rolls off the screen and back onto the wall.
- 12:34And the Cardinal bad boy, Jerry, picks it up.
- 12:40Runners at first and second one away.
- 12:43Orlando Cepeda the hitter.
- 12:45The Cardinals trying to break out in front.
- 12:47Santiago gets set.
- 12:49The 2-2 pitch.
- 12:51Here's a big one.
- 12:53Curveball high and outside.
- 12:55Barely missed with it.
- 12:57And the crowd groaned on that one.
- 12:59Three balls, two strikes.
- 13:00Cepeda, as the pitch passed the plate, quickly looked back over his shoulder.
- 13:05I don't think he was too sure which way it would be called.
- 13:08Three balls, two strikes, and let's see if the runners break.
- 13:11There's only one out.
- 13:12Cepeda waiting.
- 13:14Brock a lead.
- 13:16Maris is at first.
- 13:18There's the stretch.
- 13:20The hesitation.
- 13:22The whirl and throw to second Brock is back safely.
- 13:26Hadair took the throw.
- 13:29Three balls, two strikes.
- 13:30All year long the Cardinals run in this situation.
- 13:33And let's see what they'll do on the World Series.
- 13:36There's only one away.
- 13:38The danger of running is that should Cepeda strike out, you'd run into the end of the inning perhaps.
- 13:45But Brock is fast.
- 13:47Three balls, two strikes.
- 13:48The stretch.
- 13:49There go the runners.
- 13:50A pitch.
- 13:51Bouncing ball to the third base.
- 13:52Steps up third for one.
- 13:54Jones throw to first.
- 13:55Double play.
- 13:58Now Cepeda hits to a double play.
- 14:00From Dalton Jones to George Scott.
- 14:04And so in the first half of the first inning it's no runs.
- 14:09One hit.
- 14:10No errors.
- 14:11One left for the Cardinals.
- 14:16If you're swinging for a new set of snow tires this winter, don't be struck out by a fast selling pitch.
- 14:24Make the sure hit at your straight talking BF Goodrich dealer.
- 14:28Ask him about the BFG TrailMaker Silver Tom.
- 14:32It's the hardest hitting snow tire on the road.
- 14:35A tough competitor that digs in deep to keep you going on ice or through heavy snow.
- 14:40It's tough four ply nylon cord with a husky tread and the deepest biting edges in the business.
- 14:47Tough inside, tough outside.
- 14:49Yet you'll never hear it growl.
- 14:51It rides quiet on wet or dry roads.
- 14:54TrailMaker Silver Tom snow tires have stopping power too.
- 14:59The snowing gets really skittish. You can have your TrailMakers with steel safety studs.
- 15:04There's no money down with a BF Goodrich Choice Charge account.
- 15:08And installation is free.
- 15:11So make a hit with power driving BF Goodrich TrailMaker Silver Tom snow tires.
- 15:17Get them now from your straight talking BF Goodrich dealer.
- 15:37Well here we have a threat for the Cardinals with no score.
- 15:40Now let's see what the Red Sox will do.
- 15:43Well Harry, San Diego could have got himself in the jam right there.
- 15:48He had runners on first and second and one out.
- 15:51But he got out of it. Let's see what happens to Bob Gibson.
- 15:54Jerry Adair right handed batter. First pitch he swings and he misses strike one.
- 15:59Adair hit 273.
- 16:01Three homers and 35 runs battered in.
- 16:04Jerry's been around the American League a little bit with Baltimore.
- 16:07The White Sox now Boston.
- 16:10The pitch is a fastball low and outside.
- 16:12Gibson a fastball pitcher.
- 16:15And a good slider.
- 16:17There are days when his breaking ball is very, very effective.
- 16:22Other days he might hang. Here's a pitch on the way.
- 16:25And it's a fastball high.
- 16:28Two balls and a strike on Jerry Adair.
- 16:34Eddie Popowski coaching at third base. Bobby Doerr at first base.
- 16:39Adair leading off right handed batter. The Cardinals play him straight away.
- 16:43The wind up the pitch.
- 16:45He had a good cut and he fouled back to the screen.
- 16:48Adair had three homers this season.
- 16:52His biggest year in home runs was 11 with Baltimore in 1962.
- 16:58Right handed hitter.
- 17:00Two balls, two strikes to count.
- 17:03Now Gibson-Wines. Here's the pitch.
- 17:06Curveball, run away.
- 17:09The count is full of three and two.
- 17:11And the Red Sox fans and their legion here today wait in expectancy to pitch.
- 17:21He struck him out swinging at a high fastball.
- 17:24He may have chased a bad ball.
- 17:27Well I guess with a fellow like Bob Gibson he pitches a lot of high fastballs.
- 17:32And not too many pitchers can get away with that.
- 17:34But you don't want to take that third strike and Adair went down swinging.
- 17:40There's one away and here is Dalton Jones who started the inning-inning double play for the Red Sox in the first.
- 17:45Here's the pitch to the left hand hitter and it's high on outside.
- 17:48Dalton Jones, a line drive hitter, pops that ball to all fields.
- 17:52He hit 289. Three homers, 25 runs about it in.
- 17:56Straddles the plate, Gibson's pitch.
- 17:59It's a fastball a little bit low and Gibson wasn't happy about that call.
- 18:04Two balls, no strikes.
- 18:06One arrow to nobody on and Carl Jastremsky will be up there next.
- 18:10The Cardinals' strategy if you call it that, two balls, no strikes, the pitch.
- 18:15He swings later to fastball.
- 18:18The Cardinals hope to be able to keep Adair and Jones off base so when Jastremsky comes up the bases will be empty.
- 18:26They figure he's going to get his hits.
- 18:28Here's the delivery, swung and missed a curve ball.
- 18:31And the count evens at two balls, two strikes.
- 18:34So far it's only a few pitches but Gibson is overpowering.
- 18:40Two balls, two strikes. Jones waits.
- 18:44The windup, the pitch.
- 18:46He struck him out swinging.
- 18:50Dalton Jones goes down swinging.
- 18:52And listen to the hand and how richly earned for Carl Jastremsky.
- 19:06What a year. This fella had a career in one season.
- 19:10Forty-four homers tied in that department with Tom and Killibro.
- 19:14Here's the windup, the pitch to the left hand hitter.
- 19:16Fastball a little bit low.
- 19:18He drove in 121 runs which was tops.
- 19:21He hit 326, that was tops.
- 19:24A triple crowd winner and undoubtedly a unanimous MVP.
- 19:28Here's the pitch.
- 19:30Curve ball low, he changed up on that one.
- 19:32Two balls, no strikes, two out.
- 19:36Bob Gibson is playing the first too many things.
- 19:39Gibson, you know, holds a World Series strikeout record established in 1964.
- 19:47Now the sign. Two balls, no strikes.
- 19:51Jastremsky left handed down to the pitch.
- 19:53Swings, high pop foul.
- 19:55Sapeta coming down the line.
- 19:57Gibson's quality ball ball.
- 19:58But Gibson let Sapeta take it.
- 20:00Gibson, you know, is that kind of an athlete.
- 20:03But Sapeta took the little pop foul and the Red Sox go down in order.
- 20:08And the score at the end of the first inning.
- 20:11St. Louis nothing, Boston nothing.
- 20:15Hello, this is Petula Clark of Plymouth 68.
- 20:19And the beat goes on.
- 20:22Yes, the beat goes on.
- 20:25Last year over a quarter million owners of other low price cars were won over to Plymouth.
- 20:31It started a movement, a momentum, a beat.
- 20:35And the beat goes on.
- 20:39Styles have come, surely styles will go.
- 20:45But Plymouth's beauty is not a bad one, you know.
- 20:51Beauty's not what you've been looking for.
- 20:57Yes, can you believe those looks and so much more?
- 21:03Yes, the beat goes on.
- 21:10The Plymouth win you over beats go on.
- 21:19And now three important words from your nearby Plymouth dealer.
- 21:24Enjoy the game.
- 21:30We're going to the top of the second inning and Tim McArthur will lead it off to the Cardinals who threatened the first but were retired at Santiago.
- 21:38Forced Orlando Sapeta to bounce into a double play beautifully handled by Dalton Jones, the third base.
- 21:44He stepped on the bag to force Brock and fired perfectly to Scott to complete the double play.
- 21:49But now it's the second inning and here's McArthur.
- 21:53He hit 295 his career high this past season.
- 21:57He hit 14 home runs his career high this past season.
- 22:01He drove in 69 runs which was his career high this past season.
- 22:06Need I tell you, he had his greatest year.
- 22:09The pitch.
- 22:10Curveball in there.
- 22:12Strike call.
- 22:13Santiago has a fine curveball.
- 22:17Tim, left handed bat.
- 22:19Does a little form of calisthenics, loosening up up there.
- 22:2429. Here's the wind up.
- 22:27The pitch.
- 22:28A tap fall.
- 22:31Two strikes no more.
- 22:34The outfield.
- 22:36I guess it's because of this ballpark.
- 22:39It seems like they play all hitters about the same.
- 22:42But it looks that way.
- 22:43I've noticed that in your strumski outing left field they have a little spot that's worn out there.
- 22:47He plays a little bit more left center I think than most outfielders do in most parts.
- 22:52But this park is so short that he just gives them that left field line.
- 22:56Pitch to McCarver.
- 22:57Slowly lifts and he lost his helmet on that one.
- 23:02McCarver goes down swinging.
- 23:04There's a second strike out for his Santiago.
- 23:07And that'll bring up Mike Shan in the third baseman of the card.
- 23:11He hit 245 this past year.
- 23:13He had 12 homers.
- 23:15Drove in 77 runs.
- 23:18He's a tremendously popular athlete being St. Louis born and bred.
- 23:24Here's the wind up in the pitch.
- 23:26Curveball line.
- 23:27Left field base in.
- 23:28Santiago hung that curveball and Shan drilled it like a bullet in the left.
- 23:34So Shan is on with the Cardinals second hit of the ballgame.
- 23:37And here is Hooli and Javier.
- 23:40The Cardinals second baseman who hit 281 this season with 14 homers and 64 runs batted in.
- 23:47Shan in the first base with one out.
- 23:51Down Maxville kneeling in the on deck circle.
- 24:02Now the signal from the stretch.
- 24:06Little pitch.
- 24:07Hooli takes curve into the dirt.
- 24:09Nice play by the catcher, Russ Gibson.
- 24:11One ball, no strikes.
- 24:13One out, one on.
- 24:14No score.
- 24:15Second inning, first game of the World Series.
- 24:17Beautiful afternoon.
- 24:19The temperature must be in the 70s.
- 24:23Now Hooli gets set.
- 24:25He has faced Santiago in the Winter Leagues many, many times.
- 24:29Now the stretch.
- 24:30A lead by Shannon.
- 24:31The pitch.
- 24:33Line drive.
- 24:34Left center field base hit.
- 24:35Shannon around second base.
- 24:36Will he try for third?
- 24:37Here he comes.
- 24:38Reggie Smith bubbles the ball.
- 24:40And Shannon goes sliding in the third base.
- 24:42Boy, that was some daring on Shannon's part because Reggie Smith has one of the greatest arms in baseball.
- 24:48And had he not fumbled the ball, I think he would have thrown Mike out by a pretty good margin at third base.
- 24:54But the Cardinals were gambling and they wind up with runners at first and third and one out.
- 25:00Harry, I'm kind of sorry to see Reggie Smith fumble that ball because I was telling you last night,
- 25:05if we get an opportunity, this Reggie Smith has one of the finest arms you'll ever see.
- 25:09And you said finer than Carl Alfarillo, the old outfielder for the Dodgers right fielder.
- 25:13I believe he does have Harry.
- 25:15And he would have had a shot at Mike Shannon in the third base.
- 25:18This is what this Cardinals have done all year.
- 25:20They've taken that gamble.
- 25:21So it's runners at first and third.
- 25:23Let's watch the Red Sox in field.
- 25:25They play halfway around short and second.
- 25:27Down Max Hill to batter.
- 25:29He hit 227.
- 25:31Had a lot of timely hits.
- 25:33Drove in 41 runs.
- 25:34With one homer that inside the park.
- 25:37There's stretched up pitch.
- 25:39Max Hill takes curve outside.
- 25:41Now Javier has better than average speed.
- 25:45Very fast at first base.
- 25:46Shannon's at third base.
- 25:48The infield, Scott holding the runner on at first.
- 25:51Dalton Jones is just a step behind the bag at third.
- 25:54Petracelli and Adair are halfway at short and second.
- 25:58The outfield's playing with Jastremski towards left center.
- 26:03A lot of line drives at most ballparks with the extra bases at the left center.
- 26:07Will be easy outs in this ballpark.
- 26:11Runners at first and third.
- 26:12The Cardinals threatening for the second straight inning.
- 26:15Here's Santiago getting set.
- 26:17The stretch.
- 26:19The pitch to Maxville.
- 26:22Ooh, he undressed him on that one.
- 26:24There was one right under his chin.
- 26:26That's what you call a major league brushback.
- 26:29And Maxville, his helmet went one way.
- 26:32His bat went another way and his body went still a third.
- 26:35And I'm glad his body went in the direction it did.
- 26:40Because that way he avoided the pitch.
- 26:43So the count.
- 26:45Two balls, no strikes.
- 26:47Runners at first and third.
- 26:49Maxville likes to hit the runner.
- 26:52Especially with Javier at first base, which he is now.
- 26:56Shannon's at third.
- 26:57Two balls, no strikes.
- 26:59The stretch.
- 27:00Javier lead.
- 27:02The pitch.
- 27:03Curve outside.
- 27:05And it's ball three.
- 27:07Now the pitcher, Bob Gibson, will be coming up next.
- 27:11There's no score in this ballgame.
- 27:13We're in the top of the second inning.
- 27:16Runners are at first and third with one out.
- 27:18Peewee?
- 27:19Harry, at times like this you've seen it and I've seen it.
- 27:23Were you a pitch around this fellow here and hoping that you can get to the pitcher and have an easy out,
- 27:27maybe get two outs and not score, but not with Bob Gibson the next hitter,
- 27:31because he is a very fine hitting pitcher.
- 27:34Here's the pitch.
- 27:35He walked him ball four and the bases are loaded.
- 27:39So Maxville is drawing the base on balls and Bob Gibson, who has bemoaned the fact,
- 27:46Peewee, that this has been his fourth season batting in his career.
- 27:54He has hit home runs in the major leagues.
- 27:59This season he hit only 133 with just eight hits and 60 times at bat.
- 28:04A right-handed batter, activity for the Red Sox in their bullpen.
- 28:10We'll tell you about it in a moment.
- 28:12Bases loaded, infield back, the pitch to Gibson.
- 28:14Curve ball high, ball wide.
- 28:18Lee Stang is warming up in the bullpen out in right center.
- 28:22The manager of the Red Sox is walking slowly out to talk to Jose Santiago,
- 28:27Dick Williams, who without any question will be the manager of the year
- 28:31in the American League and maybe the manager of many a year.
- 28:34What a job this fellow did.
- 28:37And while Manager Williams walks out to the mound,
- 28:40we'll pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 28:46If you've grown up around here, chances are you take Saratoga Vichy for granted.
- 28:51Well, don't.
- 28:53What you're being so blase about happens to be one of the most extraordinary
- 28:57natural products in all the world.
- 29:00People send for it from all over, both for its curious taste
- 29:04and for that remarkably long-lived carbonation
- 29:07the Vichy people are always talking about.
- 29:10Saratoga Vichy, the only mix that we know of
- 29:13that people built a city just to be near.
- 29:18Bob Gibson, low and outside.
- 29:22Ball two.
- 29:23This inning started with McCarver striking out.
- 29:25Shannon lined a single left.
- 29:27Javier looped a single to center.
- 29:29Shannon going to third.
- 29:30Knoxville walked on four straight pitches.
- 29:33Now Bob Gibson has a count of two balls, no strikes.
- 29:37Now the wind-up.
- 29:38Here's Santiago's pitch.
- 29:40Ground ball, might be a double play.
- 29:42Jones up.
- 29:43Throws to second for one.
- 29:44Over to first base.
- 29:45A double play.
- 29:48They turned it over.
- 29:50Dalton Jones for the second inning of the row.
- 29:52A double play goes from Jones to Adair to Scott.
- 29:57And so the Cardinals fail the score.
- 29:59There's no runs, two hits, no errors, and two left.
- 30:04And the score at the end of an inning and a half, St. Louis nothing, Boston nothing.
- 30:11Your new Technicrat razor gives a very nice shave.
- 30:19Crazy about not having to handle razor blades since I got your Tectonics razor.
- 30:31I like the light feel of your Technotic razor.
- 30:38You got a very smooth shave this morning with your Tecmitonic razor.
- 30:47Did you know a guy could flip that lever for a new edge right in the middle of a shave with his Tecmitonic razor of yours?
- 30:59No nicks yet with your Technicrat razor.
- 31:05The hard pronouncing, easy shaving, Gillette Tecmitic razor.
- 31:11Ask your face about it.
- 31:14This is the bright sound in radio.
- 31:16WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station at 810 on your dial in Schenectady, New York.
- 31:24He was just put on.
- 31:25He went out and talked to San Diego.
- 31:27He did that last Saturday.
- 31:29San Diego was a little high with the ball.
- 31:30He told them to keep the ball down.
- 31:32And that's exactly what San Diego did there.
- 31:35And he got another double play and got out of two tough innings.
- 31:38Boy, that he did.
- 31:39And the play on Gibson at first base, I was amazed how close it was.
- 31:43Gibson, you know, just had a broken leg this summer.
- 31:48Here's the first pitch swung on by Ken Harrelson, a fly ball to right field.
- 31:52Roger Maher is there and he has it.
- 31:54Ken Harrelson, who hit 255 with 12 homers and 54 runs by the end,
- 32:00went after the first pitch and flat out demands.
- 32:03That'll bring up George Scott, a popular favorite here.
- 32:06Listen to the crowd.
- 32:15Scott hit 303 with 19 homers.
- 32:20This is WGY, a General Electric Broadcasting Company station.
- 32:25He's got a total of 82 runs, bad at 303, 19 homers and a great defensive first base.
- 32:32This fellow's got a short left field fence.
- 32:34Here's the pitch.
- 32:36Line drive base hit.
- 32:37Left center field, Bronco going over.
- 32:40Here's Scott rounding first, holds up there.
- 32:43And there's the first red sox hit.
- 32:46A line single to left center by George Scott.
- 32:54Bronco Petrocelli, the shortstop.
- 32:57You have a shortstop that hits 17 homers, you know you have yourself some property.
- 33:03He drove in 66 runs.
- 33:05He hit 259 right-handed by the stretch pitch.
- 33:08He swung and he missed.
- 33:09He was trying to go to the opposite field.
- 33:11One strike, no ball.
- 33:13Petrocelli the hitter, right-handed by the.
- 33:17Scott the runner at first.
- 33:19Listen to the red sox fans at all staccato of law.
- 33:23The pitch.
- 33:25Here it is.
- 33:27He swung and he missed, strike two.
- 33:29Petrocelli had a good cut that time.
- 33:35We're in the second inning.
- 33:37No score.
- 33:39With one on up Scott is single to left center.
- 33:42Petrocelli is the batter.
- 33:44That was the first hit for the red sox.
- 33:46Now the stretch.
- 33:47The pitch high.
- 33:50And the red sox has plenty of smoke.
- 33:56You know Dalton Jones playing in his first World Series has already tied a World Series record by starting two double plays in a game.
- 34:04That's a record for a third baseman.
- 34:07Sometimes it doesn't take you long to get into that record book in World Series competition.
- 34:12Some great stars never even played in a World Series.
- 34:20One out or one on first.
- 34:21Petrocelli.
- 34:22Two strikes and a ball.
- 34:24Gibson's fifth.
- 34:25He struck him out swinging.
- 34:28And there's the third strike.
- 34:32Reggie Smith to center field.
- 34:34He stole 17 bases.
- 34:37He hit 246.
- 34:39He had 15 homers.
- 34:4261 runs batted in.
- 34:43Switch hitter.
- 34:44Batting left handed against Bob Gibson.
- 34:47I see Flood is playing him towards left field.
- 34:50They don't play him to full.
- 34:53In fact Flood is looking towards Roger Maris for guidance.
- 34:57As he moves towards left field out of his center field position.
- 35:01Reggie swings and misses a fastball.
- 35:03Had a good cut.
- 35:05Or they say this youngster has a tremendous future.
- 35:11It's his first full year and it's a good one.
- 35:15He'll hit much higher than 246 before he's through.
- 35:20Great speed.
- 35:21Wonderful arm as we've discussed.
- 35:23The stretch pitch.
- 35:24There goes the runner.
- 35:25Swung.
- 35:26Bouncing foul.
- 35:27Past Bobby Doerr.
- 35:29Into the Red Sox.
- 35:31Dugout or Dick Williams.
- 35:33Grab that ball.
- 35:35So two strikes and nothing on Reggie Smith.
- 35:39George Scott the runner at first base.
- 35:45You know Scott for a big fella can run.
- 35:49He stole 11 bases.
- 35:51The stretch.
- 35:53He has the lead.
- 35:54The pitch.
- 35:55Right foul.
- 35:56Into the stands on the roof in left field.
- 35:58He got around lane on that one a few weeks.
- 36:00They know what they're doing out there.
- 36:03Reggie Smith, he's a few times that I've seen him this year.
- 36:06He's liable to hit the ball anywhere.
- 36:07Of course Bob Gibson's real good fastball.
- 36:09He's more apt to hit it off over in the left field.
- 36:11But if he throws him a curveball, gets it down in a little bit on him, he's more apt to pull it.
- 36:18Two strikes is the count on Reggie Smith.
- 36:21Scott a lead so Peta holding him on.
- 36:23The pitch.
- 36:24Fastball outside.
- 36:26And the count.
- 36:27Two strikes on the wall.
- 36:28I don't believe that was a pitch out although it was in a pitch out position.
- 36:32We're in the second inning.
- 36:34No score.
- 36:35The Red Sox have just had their first hit.
- 36:38The Cardinals have had three hits so far.
- 36:40Threatened twice but failed to come across.
- 36:42Throw to first, runner back.
- 36:44Peta returns the ball to Bob Gibson.
- 36:48Bottom half of the second inning, no score.
- 36:50Gibson takes his cap off, wipes his face.
- 36:53It's warm down on that field.
- 36:55Now time is gone.
- 36:56Let's see.
- 36:58Anyway I wonder if they're getting an admission price out of those fans who are draped around that sign out in center field outside the ballpark.
- 37:06Well of course a lot of part of this season they've been up there.
- 37:10We even had a couple of them on the scoreboard out in right field.
- 37:14Of course they finally chased them off because it's right inside of the ballpark.
- 37:18But they've been trying to get into this ballpark and of course it's standing room only.
- 37:23And that's a nice place to be out there.
- 37:26You know we have a delay now because one of the fans is on the top of a green monster right next to the foul pole.
- 37:34And they're trying to get him down.
- 37:36So with a small ballpark here at Fenway, fans are using every devious means of witnessing this spectacle.
- 37:50Even to the point of taking their life in jeopardy as it were by hanging off signs that are extended some 100 feet above the ground.
- 38:02Reggie Smith is the hitter.
- 38:08Two strikes and a ball to count.
- 38:11We're in the bottom of the second no score.
- 38:13The runner at first base, George Scott.
- 38:16Gibson's pitch.
- 38:17Here it is.
- 38:18Swung and high pop foul back and Pee Wee Reese I thought might have a put out but over his head and onto the roof.
- 38:26What's your record this year on foul ball?
- 38:28I've been dunking him all this year.
- 38:30What's your record with that little basket of yours?
- 38:33That never mind it was in a slump all season long.
- 38:36I think it caught fire this year.
- 38:38Here's the stretch.
- 38:40Me and the pitch.
- 38:41There goes the runner.
- 38:42Swung and he struck him out.
- 38:44Reggie Smith becomes the fourth strikeout victim.
- 38:47For Bob Gibson who was fan too in each of the first two innings.
- 38:51No runs, one hit.
- 38:52No errors, one length.
- 38:54The score at the end of it.
- 38:55The second inning.
- 38:56St. Louis nothing.
- 38:58Boston nothing.
- 39:04So you've made up your mind.
- 39:05You're going to try a big one you know.
- 39:07One of those new extra length cigarettes.
- 39:09Well then this announcement is just for you.
- 39:13If you want a long one be sure you get the one taste worth making longer.
- 39:18Get the taste that's springtime fresh.
- 39:21That's right the taste of new super king size Salem filter cigarettes.
- 39:27Yes they're here.
- 39:28Brand new super king size Salem.
- 39:31With the extra length that refreshes your taste a few moments longer.
- 39:36And aren't you glad you get a few moments more to enjoy America's favorite mental taste.
- 39:42The freshest taste in smoking now extended just a few moments longer.
- 39:48So if you want to try a big cigarette don't make a big mistake when it comes to taste.
- 39:53Try new super king size Salem.
- 39:56One pack and you'll know what we mean when we say here's the one mental taste worth making longer.
- 40:09We go into the tap of the third.
- 40:11No score.
- 40:13Anyway I'm wondering if this is one of those ball games where one team keeps knocking at the door and never quite arrives.
- 40:19And then the other team suddenly slips in and it's all over.
- 40:23Well both these clubs Harry they have they have pretty good power.
- 40:27And of course there are two pretty good pitchers working out there right now.
- 40:30San Diego if he can keep the ball down as you noticed a while ago he does not have a big curve ball.
- 40:37But he has a real quick breaking slider.
- 40:40He keeps the ball down he's pretty tough.
- 40:42And of course everybody knows that Bob Gibson's tough.
- 40:45So it could be a low scoring ball game but maybe they're kind of fencing here just feeling each other out.
- 40:52We go to the top of the third and as we do it'll be the top of the batting order again for the Cardinals.
- 41:01The Redbirds by the way have won the series opener only twice in 1934 and in 1964.
- 41:08They lost their opening game in World Series competition eight times.
- 41:15Now the Cardinals have won more World Series seven in ten tries than any major league club except the Yankees who won 20 out of 29.
- 41:28Here's Little Brock.
- 41:29He opened the ball game with a base hit and stole second but did not score in that first inning.
- 41:34We're in the top of the third, San Diego's first pitch. Brock swings.
- 41:38High fly ball, deep left field.
- 41:40If it stays there let's see.
- 41:42It is a foul ball into the left field corner.
- 41:49Little Brock aiming for that fence.
- 41:52You know Peewee he has hit home runs into our left field stands in St. Louis which is a much deeper poke than here in Boston.
- 41:59Yes it is.
- 42:00I've seen Little.
- 42:01I've seen the Cardinals a couple of times this year and I saw him hit two tremendous home runs in right center too.
- 42:06This fellow who is not too big has good power and as we've said so often he is not the type of fellow that will only beat you with his bat or with his glove.
- 42:15He can beat you on that base with just a base on ball.
- 42:18The pitch to him.
- 42:19Swat line drive and he says Little Brock.
- 42:21Line's a single in the center field.
- 42:23So he's been the bat twice.
- 42:25He's single twice.
- 42:27He's batting at a thousand.
- 42:29During the season he had 206 hits.
- 42:33Roberto Clemente led the league in total hits.
- 42:38Last night Mr. Harry Carey was making prediction on the series.
- 42:46He said my prediction to be the star of this World Series will be none other than Lou Brock.
- 42:53Two for two so far.
- 42:54Not bad Harry.
- 42:55Well it's a long way to go in this series but he's got so many things to star with.
- 43:01Lou Brock the throw over to first base by Santiago but he's back there.
- 43:05Again he throws it might be close and he is saved.
- 43:07He had a dive back at first this time.
- 43:10He almost got him leaning the wrong way.
- 43:12The Cardinals now have had four hits in this ball game.
- 43:16Kirk Flaud who was out on strikes his first time up as the hitter.
- 43:19A lead by Brock.
- 43:21Santiago ready.
- 43:23The pitch inside and high.
- 43:26I noticed Santiago pitch Flaud inside his first time at bat.
- 43:31Got him on a curve ball over the inside part of the play.
- 43:36And this pitch to him was inside again.
- 43:38Here's Brock taking a lead.
- 43:40He stole second in the first inning.
- 43:42Here's the first.
- 43:43A single by Brock and a walk to Maris in the first before Sepeda hit into a double play.
- 43:48Then the inning, they had singles by Shannon and Javier and a walk to Maxville in the second before Gibson hit into a double play.
- 43:56And now they've got Brock at third and Flaud at second.
- 44:02Five hits for the Redbirds.
- 44:04We're in the third inning.
- 44:05The infield is playing back.
- 44:07Runners at second and third nobody up.
- 44:10Santiago gets set as Roger Maris waits the pitch.
- 44:15He had a good cut and he fouled back to the screen.
- 44:18Strike one.
- 44:20One strike and no ball.
- 44:23Little Brock at third base.
- 44:25Kurt Flaud at second base.
- 44:28Nobody out.
- 44:30The infield playing back and feeding the run for the out.
- 44:36Roger Maris digging in.
- 44:37Here's the pitch.
- 44:39He had a good cut again and fouled it back.
- 44:42Boy, he just had two real rips.
- 44:44This inning started with little Brock lining a single in the center field.
- 44:52Then Kurt Flaud ripped a low line drive into the left field corner for a double Brock racing the third.
- 44:58That's where he is now.
- 45:00Roger Maris with a counter strike two.
- 45:04Now the signal.
- 45:06Santiago's pitch.
- 45:07And here it is.
- 45:09Swings and he fouls tips.
- 45:10Curve ball.
- 45:12They like to throw Maris off speed pitchings.
- 45:15Here it is.
- 45:17Swings and he fouls tips.
- 45:19Curve ball.
- 45:21They like to throw Maris off speed pitchings, especially when they get in front of him.
- 45:26Roger Maris.
- 45:28Veteran right fielder.
- 45:33The only man who ever hit more home runs than Babe Ruth.
- 45:40Cardinals threatening for the third straight inning.
- 45:44Now Santiago gets set.
- 45:46The wind up, the pit.
- 45:48Inside fastball.
- 45:50The crowd groans as they thought it might have caught the inside corner.
- 45:57A gutting pitch by Santiago that time.
- 45:59He tried to jam him with the fastball and almost caught that inside corner.
- 46:03Lee Stang is working out on the bullpen for the red side.
- 46:07Two strikes and a ball on Roger Maris.
- 46:10Sepeda will be next.
- 46:12Now the wind.
- 46:13Little pitch.
- 46:15Foul tipped.
- 46:16Barely got a piece of the ball.
- 46:19And Santiago has done a tremendous job when the pressure has been on.
- 46:25He got Sepeda to hit into a double play in the first.
- 46:28He got Gibson to roll into a double play in the second.
- 46:31And he is really battling Roger Maris here in the third.
- 46:34Runners at second and third and nobody else.
- 46:37No score.
- 46:40Now the signal.
- 46:41Here is the wind up.
- 46:43The pitch to Maris.
- 46:44Smash on the ground.
- 46:45The run will score.
- 46:46Scott up with the ball.
- 46:47Steps on the bag.
- 46:48And Flood advances to third.
- 46:50Roger Maris drives in the first run of the 1967 World Series.
- 46:57A hot shot on the ground to Scott.
- 46:59Who failed with the ball.
- 47:00Stepped on the bag and assisted.
- 47:02Brock crossing the plate.
- 47:04Flood advancing to third.
- 47:06And now here is Sepeda with the infield coming in.
- 47:09Orlando hitting into a double play as I mentioned in the first.
- 47:13The big man of the Cardinal, Leto.
- 47:17Here is the pitch by Santiago.
- 47:20Popped out.
- 47:22Foul territory.
- 47:24Dalton Jones has got to play.
- 47:26Makes the count.
- 47:27Sepeda on the first pitch.
- 47:30Dalton Jones.
- 47:33And Santiago got a big man out.
- 47:36And now with two away, the infield can play a normal position as Tim McCarver comes to the play.
- 47:45Santiago has had the number of his countryman, Orlando Sepeda, the first two times at bat.
- 47:54Each time we have been in scoring position.
- 47:56He got him hitting into a double play and he got him to pop up with a runner at third.
- 47:59Now there is two out and here is McCarver.
- 48:01He fanned his first time up.
- 48:04Left handed hitter, the pitch.
- 48:07Curve up beauty at that outside corner to the end.
- 48:11One strike and no ball.
- 48:13Jim Pack ballpark in Boston.
- 48:16First game of the World Series, the Cardinals are out in front one to nothing.
- 48:23Now Santiago is set.
- 48:25Here is the pitch.
- 48:27Outside.
- 48:29That evens it.
- 48:30A ball and a strike.
- 48:32Flood was way down the third base line and Gibson the catcher took a look at him.
- 48:36Tim McCarver.
- 48:39Left handed batter.
- 48:40Cardinal catcher.
- 48:43Drove in 69 runs during the season.
- 48:46Here is the pitch.
- 48:48Barely missed the outside corner.
- 48:51McCarver wants a squeeze of that rising bat.
- 48:55In the 1964 World Series in the pivotal, pivotal fifth game after Tommy Tresch with two out and a man on in the bottom of the ninth that hit a homer to tie up Gibson 2-2.
- 49:07It was McCarver in the tenth who hit the three run homer to win the ball game 5-2.
- 49:13And of course that was perhaps the key game of the series.
- 49:15Here is the pitch.
- 49:16High.
- 49:19A fastball ball three.
- 49:21Three balls and a strike.
- 49:22Shannon will be up there next.
- 49:25McCarver takes a look at Joe Schultz coaching third.
- 49:30For the hit or take.
- 49:32With a count three balls one strike.
- 49:35Time is called.
- 49:36Just as San Diego started his windup.
- 49:40One to nothing St. Louis.
- 49:41Top of the third.
- 49:43The Redbirds have had five hits.
- 49:47The Red Sox have had one.
- 49:49Here is the pitch.
- 49:51Ball four.
- 49:52He walked him.
- 49:55There is the third pass given up by Santiago.
- 50:00He has certainly been in a lot of trouble Peeway and still trails only one to nothing.
- 50:05Yes he certainly has.
- 50:07He hasn't had his real good control.
- 50:08Of course the ball club like the Cardinals you have to pitch him a little bit carefully.
- 50:13I believe that he did not want McCarver to hit that pitch.
- 50:16He wanted to pitch around him and pitch to Mike Shannon.
- 50:19Of course Shannon has one for one today.
- 50:21But I believe he would rather pitch to Shannon he had McCarver.
- 50:25Alright here is Mike Shannon.
- 50:26Runners at first and third.
- 50:27Two out.
- 50:28Cardinals lead one to nothing.
- 50:29They will pitch.
- 50:30Popped it up on the infield.
- 50:32He pulled him with a curve ball.
- 50:33And Adair will field this one.
- 50:35Peta.
- 50:36Shannon pops it.
- 50:38What a.
- 50:43Two hits.
- 50:44No errors.
- 50:45Two left.
- 50:47And the score at the end of two and a half innings is now Saint Louis one.
- 50:51Boston nothing.
- 50:56The guy who can come in off the bench and pitch it for real power.
- 50:59Well he is the kind of insurance every manager likes to have.
- 51:03We mention this because all you grandstand managers are going to need some more.
- 51:07Pitch hitting power real soon.
- 51:09With Winter just around the corner you will probably be changing the line up on your car.
- 51:14Calling in a set of new snow tires.
- 51:17So why not get yourself the toughest pinch hitters in the entire Winter League.
- 51:22BF Goodridge Trailmakers Silver Town snow tires.
- 51:26They'll come in cold and hit for power through the heaviest snow.
- 51:30They'll come right down the grips with ice.
- 51:32Take off smooth in the most skittish places.
- 51:35They're built with new customized nylon core.
- 51:39So they can take the pounding for a long Winter season and come back next year for more.
- 51:44And if you wish they can be equipped with steel safety studs.
- 51:49No need for any money down with a BFG Choice Charge account.
- 51:55And installations absolutely free.
- 51:59BF Goodridge Trailmakers Silver Town snow tires only at your BF Goodridge store or dealer.
- 52:08Well so far it's been Bob Gibson and the Cardinals.
- 52:15The San Luis Cardinals have one run on five hits.
- 52:18The Boston Club has not done too much with Gibson.
- 52:20They have no runs on one hit.
- 52:22The first hitter for the Boston Red Sox will be the catcher Russ Gibson.
- 52:26Harry Carey.
- 52:28Alright Pee Wee Gibson who hit two or three with one homer.
- 52:30Fifteen runs about it in during the season.
- 52:33He is not known as much for his hitting as for his defensive ability behind the plate.
- 52:39But these are the kind of fellows sometimes who are the stars in the World Series.
- 52:43There's a curve ball swung on and missed.
- 52:45Gibson is fan four.
- 52:47He's allowed one hit.
- 52:48He hasn't walked anybody.
- 52:49He leads one to nothing.
- 52:50We're in the bottom of the third.
- 52:53Out of it.
- 52:55He swings at a curve and he misses it.
- 52:58Two strikes.
- 53:00No ball.
- 53:04Russ Gibson.
- 53:06He's been in the Red Sox organization.
- 53:09Up and down.
- 53:10Here's the pitch.
- 53:11Curve ball outside.
- 53:16Been with the Red Sox since 1957.
- 53:19Last year he was at Toronto.
- 53:23Out of pitch to him.
- 53:24He struck him out.
- 53:27And now Russ Gibson becomes Gibson's.
- 53:31Russ Gibson becomes Bob Gibson's fifth strikeout victim.
- 53:35In fact, that's three strikeouts in a row for Gibson.
- 53:39After Scott Singleton was second, he fanned Cutto Selle and Reggie Smith.
- 53:44Now he opens a third striking out Russ Gibson.
- 53:47Here's Jose Santiago.
- 53:49Right handed batter.
- 53:54He had eight hits during the season.
- 53:56One home run.
- 53:57The pitch.
- 53:58I call the fastball.
- 53:59Drove in three runs.
- 54:00He hit 190.
- 54:01Right handed batter as he is a right handed pitcher.
- 54:04One out.
- 54:05Nobody on base.
- 54:06We're in the third.
- 54:07Here's the pitch.
- 54:08Foul back to the screen.
- 54:11And Gibson is out in front of Santiago.
- 54:15Two strikes.
- 54:16No ball.
- 54:17Gibson who has fanned five already.
- 54:20The last three in succession.
- 54:22And he's ahead of Santiago.
- 54:24Two strikes.
- 54:26No balls.
- 54:27Cardinals leading the third one to nothing.
- 54:29Now the line.
- 54:30The pitch.
- 54:32Swung late foul back.
- 54:34Into the press box.
- 54:35Almost got Bob Addy.
- 54:38The Washington sports writer and Neil Russo of the St. Louis Post is back.
- 54:44They didn't show me too much courage on that one, Peewee.
- 54:48Don't blame him.
- 54:50Discretion is a better part of valor anyhow.
- 54:52Here's the pitch swung.
- 54:54There's a fly.
- 54:55Foul back.
- 54:56It might be out of here.
- 54:57It's Peewee.
- 54:58And there's a full run.
- 55:01Jose Santiago brings this crowd roaring to its feet with a home run to the screen left
- 55:29center.
- 55:30With a count of two strikes and no balls.
- 55:33And Bob Gibson is a little put on in himself.
- 55:38Here now is Jerry Adair.
- 55:39The pitch.
- 55:40Swung foul back.
- 55:41Out of play.
- 55:43Anybody who swings that bat is dangerous.
- 55:47And Santiago just broke off.
- 55:49He was in the hole two strikes and nothing.
- 55:51He's the pitcher.
- 55:54Gibson hung a slider and he hit it on the screen.
- 55:56Here's the pitch.
- 55:58Adair takes a curve.
- 56:00Spike two.
- 56:01This game is tied.
- 56:02The Red Sox with one swing of Santiago's bat.
- 56:06Now equalized.
- 56:08Here's a pitch low.
- 56:11What the Cardinals have done with five hits and three walks.
- 56:16So the Cardinals have had eight men on base and have scored one run.
- 56:21And Santiago the pitcher swung his bat once and tied it up.
- 56:25Jerry Adair.
- 56:28Here's the pitch.
- 56:30He struck him out swinging.
- 56:32The sixth strikeout for Bob Gibson.
- 56:36Here's Dalton Jones who panned his first time up.
- 56:46Jose Santiago.
- 56:48Well, I wonder how many pitchers have hit home runs in World Series.
- 56:53I know there's quite a few, but nevertheless it's a most honorable distinction for a pitcher who remembers a base hit at any time.
- 57:04A home run in the World Series.
- 57:10Jose will be talking about that one for the rest of his life.
- 57:13Here's the pitch to Dalton Jones.
- 57:14Swung and foul bat.
- 57:16One strike, no ball.
- 57:19I imagine Bob Gibson will be talking about it too with no balls and two strikes on him.
- 57:23He does not make that mistake too often, especially to a pitcher.
- 57:26He probably got a little careless.
- 57:29One strike, no balls.
- 57:30The pitch, and it's a little bit low.
- 57:33Mundt Kat Grant of the Twins was the last pitcher to hit a home run in the World Series back in two years ago, 1965.
- 57:42Now the wind, the pitch.
- 57:45Howled it back to the screen.
- 57:47Two strikes and a ball on left-hand hitting Dalton Jones.
- 57:50Bob Gibson, who is fan six, he's allowed two hits, but one of them a home run by Jose Santiago.
- 58:01Now the signal.
- 58:04Waiting.
- 58:05Here's the pitch.
- 58:07Broken bat, pop fly, got a chance to drop.
- 58:10Here's Javier going out.
- 58:11Cepeda goes out and Orlando makes the catch.
- 58:14Cepeda ran down the right field line and grabbed Dalton Jones, pop fly.
- 58:21So it is one run, one hit.
- 58:23No errors, nobody left.
- 58:25And the score at the end of the three innings.
- 58:29Hello, this is Petula Clark of Pinnit 68.
- 58:33And the beat goes on.
- 58:36Yes, the beat goes on.
- 58:39Last year over a quarter million owners of other low-priced cars were won over to Plymouth.
- 58:45It started a movement, a momentum, a beat.
- 58:49And the beat goes on at your Plymouth dealers.
- 58:53Styles have come and surely styles will go.
- 58:59But Plymouth's beauty is not a fact, you know.
- 59:04Plymouth's beauty does go on and on.
- 59:07As does your Plymouth dealers great deals.
- 59:09See them now.
- 59:11He'll show you how last year the best cars are even more beautiful for 68.
- 59:16And the beat goes on.
- 59:19Yes, the beat goes on.
- 59:24Plymouth, when you are worth it, it goes on.
- 59:29And now three important words from your nearby Plymouth dealer.
- 59:33Enjoy the game.
- 59:37Brand new ballgame, P.W.E.W.E. going to the top of the fourth.
- 59:40All tied up, 1-1.
- 59:42And Houli and Javier, who singled his first time up, will lead it off to the cut.
- 59:48The pitcher, Santiago, with two strikes, no balls, homered to the left center field screen.
- 59:56The pitch to Houli, strong, ground ball.
- 59:58Up the middle, in the center, face in, cut the silly dough for the ball but couldn't reach it.
- 1:00:03So Javier, like Brock, now has had two hits.
- 1:00:07This is the third time, the third inning out of the four play that the Cardinals lead off, man, has hit safely.
- 1:00:16Here's down Maxville.
- 1:00:18Now here's a situation where Maxville likes to hit and run.
- 1:00:22With Javier on at first base and nobody out.
- 1:00:25The pitcher, Bob Gibson, will be up there next.
- 1:00:28Let's see how the Cardinals play it here.
- 1:00:31How the air lead is stretched by Santiago.
- 1:00:33Here's the pitch.
- 1:00:34Swung, trying to hit the right and fouled back and out of play.
- 1:00:38One strike, no ball.
- 1:00:39Beautiful afternoon at Fenway Park in Boston.
- 1:00:45A capacity crowd, of course.
- 1:00:49Seeing a good ballgame, tied up 1-1.
- 1:00:52Bob Gibson against Santiago, Jim Lombard will pitch tomorrow for the Red Sox against Dick Hughes for the Cardinals.
- 1:00:58Throw in at first, the runner back.
- 1:01:01Javier, good speed as I believe I mentioned before.
- 1:01:05Maxville likes to hit the ball to the opposite field.
- 1:01:09The stretch, the pitch, curve ball low.
- 1:01:13So it's a ball and a strike on the right hand hitting shot stop for the Cardinals, down Maxville.
- 1:01:20Who has a degree in electrical engineering from Washington University.
- 1:01:26Now the sign.
- 1:01:30Javier, by go.
- 1:01:33There he goes.
- 1:01:34The pitch swung a high bouncing ball towards second.
- 1:01:37I dares only play us to first base and he gets them.
- 1:01:40But Javier has advanced to second base.
- 1:01:43Maxville, with the hit run on, bounced a high chopper over the pitcher's head.
- 1:01:49A dares only play was to first base and then he just barely got Maxville and there's one away.
- 1:01:55Bob Gibson steps up.
- 1:01:58He hit with a double play with the bases loved in the second.
- 1:02:04The Cardinals now had six hits.
- 1:02:07Scored one run.
- 1:02:09They've had runners at first and second with one out and failed to score.
- 1:02:13At the bases loaded with one out failed to score.
- 1:02:15Here's a pitch to Gibson, swung hard in this.
- 1:02:18Had runners at second and third with nobody out in the third and got only one run.
- 1:02:25So they've had a lot of opportunities.
- 1:02:28Bob Gibson for a pitcher not a bad hitter.
- 1:02:33Javier a long lead at second base.
- 1:02:35Here's the pitch.
- 1:02:36Gibson swings and pulls it far.
- 1:02:40Jesse Bush, the owner of the Cardinals, almost grabbed that one.
- 1:02:44Right in front of him.
- 1:02:52Two strikes and nothing on Gibson.
- 1:02:54Santiago, a big number 30 on the back of his uniform.
- 1:02:58Gibson's number is 45.
- 1:03:02Cardinals have their names across the back of their shirts.
- 1:03:07Here's the stretch.
- 1:03:09The pitch to Gibson.
- 1:03:11Lowe almost threw it away.
- 1:03:13Nice stop by Russ Gibson.
- 1:03:18A runner at second base.
- 1:03:21There's one out.
- 1:03:22Lou Brock will be coming up next.
- 1:03:25Brock has had successive singles two times in bat.
- 1:03:30He's had a stolen base.
- 1:03:31He has scored the only run.
- 1:03:34Bob Gibson in the hole.
- 1:03:43Now to glance back.
- 1:03:44Hoolie a lead.
- 1:03:45The pitch.
- 1:03:46Curved strike for Gibson.
- 1:03:48Gibson has called out on strike.
- 1:03:50Well I tell you there was some difference between the pitch
- 1:03:53Santiago made to Gibson with two strikes and the pitch Gibson made to
- 1:03:57Santiago with two strikes.
- 1:03:59I was just thinking that area on the first pitch when he hit no balls
- 1:04:02and two strikes on Bob Gibson.
- 1:04:05Santiago threw that curve ball low and almost threw it away.
- 1:04:09And I'm now guessing two balls and two strikes and one ball.
- 1:04:13He really does break off a real good curved ball and caught him looking.
- 1:04:18All right here's Lou Brock.
- 1:04:21Each of his other two times at bat he was leading off the inning.
- 1:04:24This time he comes up with two out on a man in scoring position.
- 1:04:28Left handed batter waits.
- 1:04:30Here's Santiago's pitch.
- 1:04:32It's a curve ball outside ball one.
- 1:04:35Brock is the type of hitter that you really cannot defense.
- 1:04:40By that I mean you can't play him to pull.
- 1:04:42You can't play him to hit to the opposite field.
- 1:04:44You can't play him straight away because he hits the ball everywhere.
- 1:04:50He can hit home runs down the left field line as well as down the right field line.
- 1:04:53His power alleys are left center and right center.
- 1:04:57He can bounce.
- 1:05:01He gets a good hitter.
- 1:05:03Left handed batter waits.
- 1:05:05One ball no strikes.
- 1:05:07Now the signal.
- 1:05:09Santiago is fifth.
- 1:05:11And here it is.
- 1:05:13Ground ball on the third base line.
- 1:05:15Oh, why about a foot?
- 1:05:18And the crowd drones on that one because that one looked like it might stand there and go into the corner.
- 1:05:25And the count is one ball, one strike.
- 1:05:29Two men are out.
- 1:05:30We're in the fourth.
- 1:05:32Blue rocks about it.
- 1:05:36Brock hits 299 during the regular season.
- 1:05:40Had 21 homers.
- 1:05:43Left hand batter waits.
- 1:05:45Now Santiago gets set.
- 1:05:49Javier Lee the second base.
- 1:05:52From the belt, the fifth.
- 1:05:55Low outside.
- 1:05:57Two balls and a strike.
- 1:05:59Santiago on this time at bat on Brock is really moving the ball around.
- 1:06:03First inside and outside.
- 1:06:05And everything's been low to him.
- 1:06:08Two balls and the strike.
- 1:06:10The game is tied.
- 1:06:12We're in the fourth.
- 1:06:15Santiago glances back at Javier and pitches.
- 1:06:18Ground ball headed for left field.
- 1:06:20Javier out third.
- 1:06:22He's got a chance to score.
- 1:06:23Yosemite throws.
- 1:06:24He is out at the face.
- 1:06:27Fantastic throw.
- 1:06:37Oh, Yosemite charged the base hit like an infielder.
- 1:06:40Ticks the ball up on the lung.
- 1:06:42Fire to strike all the way on the fly to get some and throw out Javier trying to score.
- 1:06:48And it's no left.
- 1:06:50No hit.
- 1:06:51No air.
- 1:06:52One left.
- 1:06:55What a ball player.
- 1:06:56And the score at the end, a three and a half innings remain.
- 1:07:00The Cardinals won and Boston won.
- 1:07:06You know, the experts tell me that the average guy has about 16,000 roosters on his face,
- 1:07:12and that adds up to a lot of shaving day in and day out.
- 1:07:16That's the best reason I can think of for using Gillette-Faumey.
- 1:07:20No other shaving greens in this league.
- 1:07:23Gillette-Faumey is as rich and thick and nice and full of lather as your beard has ever come up again,
- 1:07:30and there's a mountain of shaving comfort in every game.
- 1:07:33No wonder it's the number one choice among men.
- 1:07:36So remember, nobody makes a lather like Faumey, nobody makes a lather like Gillette.
- 1:07:43Flair lets you like the way you feel.
- 1:07:47Flair can write angry.
- 1:07:51Flair can write happy.
- 1:07:55Flair can be very, very small.
- 1:07:58Or can be tall.
- 1:08:00Flair is different.
- 1:08:02No ball points.
- 1:08:04No pen points.
- 1:08:05Flair has a smooth nylon tip that stays firm.
- 1:08:09They shot Flair.
- 1:08:11Flair by Papermate.
- 1:08:16College of Shempsey getting a great hand.
- 1:08:20It's the first pitch of one hop to Javier, who throws them out at first base,
- 1:08:24and there's one drawn here on the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:08:27Here we have only a professor who's been true at all and been down on the field
- 1:08:34and in that gray and white uniform in these kind of games,
- 1:08:38I guess could really appreciate all of the fans did to the ability necessary
- 1:08:46to make the kind of a throw that Jaspensky did.
- 1:08:49And I know you want to comment on it, but first, here is Ken Harrelson
- 1:08:52taking a curveball for his first pitch.
- 1:08:54Well, I've seen Jaspensky do that so many times this year.
- 1:08:59He'll go out to his right and make a rifle throw to second base.
- 1:09:03He really did charge that ball.
- 1:09:05And it's remarkable how well he throws it now.
- 1:09:11That play was a tough bounce when he picked the ball up, Harry,
- 1:09:15but he came up throwing and threw a strike to the catcher.
- 1:09:20Ruck gets it at home.
- 1:09:22All right, here's a pitch to Harrelson at the curveball hop.
- 1:09:25Throw it as two balls and a strike.
- 1:09:27One out.
- 1:09:29Jaspensky charging that ground ball single to the left like an infielder might.
- 1:09:34At full speed, picking it up and firing all in one motion.
- 1:09:41And what a strike they had Javier at the plate quite obviously.
- 1:09:46Here's a pitch to Harrelson.
- 1:09:48Come on, pop up.
- 1:09:50Right center.
- 1:09:51Javier backing out.
- 1:09:52Marist coming in.
- 1:09:53Flood calls for the ball and makes the catch.
- 1:09:56Harrelson popped the flood in short right center.
- 1:10:00Here's George Scott who got the first hit.
- 1:10:06You know, the Cardinals have had seven hits and three bases on balls already
- 1:10:14and four innings that have scored only one run.
- 1:10:17It's almost unbelievable.
- 1:10:20Here's Scott.
- 1:10:22And here's the pitch.
- 1:10:23Strong and he filed it back and boy, he ought to cut it that one.
- 1:10:28One strike, no ball.
- 1:10:31Peewee, how can you have ten men on base and four innings and score only one?
- 1:10:35That's what I was thinking.
- 1:10:36Seems like this score should be about five to one in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:10:41But here it is, one and one with about a half to fourth inning.
- 1:10:44They say that's the way the Red Sox have played them all day long.
- 1:10:47Here's the fastball to Marist.
- 1:10:49Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:10:51Two men around, nobody on base.
- 1:10:53Game tied, one-one.
- 1:10:54A lot of action in this one.
- 1:10:56Here's the pitch.
- 1:10:57Boom, filed back.
- 1:10:59End of the press-by.
- 1:11:02The, uh, think of Weston Union man wound up with that one.
- 1:11:10Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:11:11George Scott the hitter.
- 1:11:13Gibson getting ready.
- 1:11:15In the excitement of the play at the plate, here's the pitch.
- 1:11:20Almost tasted, held up in time.
- 1:11:22Two strikes and a ball.
- 1:11:24In the excitement of the play at the plate, my candidate for star of the series,
- 1:11:32Lou Brock out of his third hit, here's the pitch.
- 1:11:35High and inside.
- 1:11:37Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:11:38Brock has had three hits in a row.
- 1:11:40You can really pick them there.
- 1:11:43Two away.
- 1:11:47Right-handed batter digging in.
- 1:11:50George Scott.
- 1:11:52Gibson's pitch.
- 1:11:54Here it is and it's a fastball low.
- 1:11:56Ball three.
- 1:11:58Rico Cutlesselli will be next.
- 1:12:02Scott has a short left field porch here at this ball park,
- 1:12:05but he hits the ball more to left center and straightaway center field.
- 1:12:09He has great power.
- 1:12:11Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:12:13Here's the fifth.
- 1:12:15Line drive, big left field, way back is Brock.
- 1:12:18Off the fence.
- 1:12:19Here goes Scott around first, finds a second to throw.
- 1:12:23He is paved with a double.
- 1:12:30George Scott lines a double off the left center field wall.
- 1:12:36You don't see where there is an example.
- 1:12:39Everybody talks about how sharp that fence is, which it is,
- 1:12:43but there are a lot of balls hit to left center,
- 1:12:45line drives, and another porch with travel for home runs.
- 1:12:49They only hit that wall and go for either singles or doubles.
- 1:12:53That's still true, Harry, because a lot of times it's not easy to hit a home run in this ball park
- 1:12:59unless you hit a high drive or high high ball
- 1:13:04because it will still catch part of that wall that must be at least 60 feet high.
- 1:13:09Rico Petrocelli swings at the first pitch and there's a fastball up around his Adam's apple.
- 1:13:15One strike and no ball.
- 1:13:17Two outs.
- 1:13:18The Red Sox have had only three hits, but they've played long balls.
- 1:13:22A home run by Santiago and a long double by George Scott.
- 1:13:27Here's the fifth.
- 1:13:28He swings at a curve.
- 1:13:30He tried to stop.
- 1:13:31He had chased it.
- 1:13:32And Gibson's ahead of him.
- 1:13:33Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:13:35The game's tied. We're in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:13:39Rico Petrocelli with a count of two strikes, no balls.
- 1:13:47A pitch.
- 1:13:48He struck him out swinging.
- 1:13:50That seven strikeout for Gibson.
- 1:13:53No runs.
- 1:13:54One hit.
- 1:13:55No errors.
- 1:13:56One left.
- 1:13:57And the score now at the end of four innings remains.
- 1:14:00The Boston Red Sox won the St. Louis Cardinals one.
- 1:14:05We're playing my favorite song.
- 1:14:34This little message is strictly for smokers who've never tasted a Camel cigarette.
- 1:14:59Camel smokers, you know what we mean.
- 1:15:02You let it go.
- 1:15:05Start walking.
- 1:15:11This is Howie Cowley with Pee Wee Leach.
- 1:15:14We're going into the top of the fifth of an exciting ball game.
- 1:15:17All tied up one-one and here's Kurt Fluss.
- 1:15:19He's banned in the first.
- 1:15:20He doubled in the third.
- 1:15:22Santiago's first pitch of the fifth.
- 1:15:24Fluss.
- 1:15:25Line drive in the left field.
- 1:15:26You're going back.
- 1:15:28Leach, that's a pass.
- 1:15:30Holy cow, what a play.
- 1:15:45Well, I tell you, they say that a lot of fellas said, well, this guy has such a superhuman ear,
- 1:15:53you couldn't expect him to continue it on the world's earth.
- 1:15:57Well, I got news for you.
- 1:15:58He's still doing it.
- 1:16:01Here it is.
- 1:16:02Roger Maris, one-out for fifth.
- 1:16:04Curveball inside.
- 1:16:05Flood was robbed of a double.
- 1:16:07Just then he went back.
- 1:16:09Leach high in the air and made a spectacular backhanded pass.
- 1:16:14The fifth for Maris.
- 1:16:16Popped up.
- 1:16:17Shot right field.
- 1:16:18Might drop.
- 1:16:19Everybody chasing it.
- 1:16:21Space hit.
- 1:16:23Maris dropped the single between Adair, Smith, and Howelson.
- 1:16:29And that'll bring up Cepeda with a runner at first and one out.
- 1:16:32That is now eight hits for the Cardinals, not counting one that Flood was robbed of a moment ago.
- 1:16:39Yes, Semsky has been the defensive wizard.
- 1:16:43If there's such a thing as Superman and baseball, the Red Sox left fielder's got to be it.
- 1:16:50Here's Cepeda. He failed twice with men on base.
- 1:16:55And let's see if Santiago goes to the well once too often against him.
- 1:17:00Go pitch.
- 1:17:02Curveball low.
- 1:17:04One ball, no strikes.
- 1:17:06What a game this is.
- 1:17:08See, wait.
- 1:17:09A guy hit the ball like Flood and just an A-B.
- 1:17:13Just an out.
- 1:17:15Then you bloop one like Maris when you get a base hit.
- 1:17:17Here's the pitch.
- 1:17:18Pop straight up.
- 1:17:20On the infield.
- 1:17:22Guard Scott into the ball.
- 1:17:24He's got it.
- 1:17:28I'll bet you right now Cepeda is glad that Santiago's in the American League.
- 1:17:33Because his countrymen certainly has handled him well so far.
- 1:17:37It looks to me like Orlando's Cepeda will get a free meal from Jose Santiago tonight.
- 1:17:44Because he's got a couple of base hits, of course this ballgame is nowhere, but he's handled him pretty easily so far.
- 1:17:51Here's McCarver with Maris at first base and two outs.
- 1:17:57The Cardinals will hit Santiago.
- 1:17:59I know they'll have a lot of opportunities.
- 1:18:02A fine play by Yastremski with a perfect throw to the plate kept him from scoring in the fourth.
- 1:18:08And a remarkable catch by Yastremski in this inning.
- 1:18:13I stopped him in the fifth.
- 1:18:15Now McCarver's up there.
- 1:18:17They're up there.
- 1:18:19Wings and he fouls fifth.
- 1:18:21McCarver hasn't had a real good cut at Santiago's.
- 1:18:24He hasn't quite zeroed him in.
- 1:18:28Might be one of the few times he has faced him.
- 1:18:31Santiago's a member of the Kansas City Club.
- 1:18:33Faced the Cardinals in their wing training in Florida.
- 1:18:38Here's the stretch.
- 1:18:40And the fifth.
- 1:18:42A fastball outside.
- 1:18:44That evens it.
- 1:18:45A ball and a strike.
- 1:18:46Maris at first base, two men are away.
- 1:18:48We're in the fifth.
- 1:18:51The crowd's still buzzing a little bit about Yastremski's last piece.
- 1:19:00A remarkable leaping backhand of staff.
- 1:19:03Here's the stretch.
- 1:19:06The pitch.
- 1:19:07Foul back.
- 1:19:08Just above us, onto the roof.
- 1:19:11Now McCarver is in the hole, two strikes and a ball.
- 1:19:15Shannon will be up there next.
- 1:19:17We're in the fifth.
- 1:19:19A lot of things have happened, but the score is one and one.
- 1:19:25And Santiago hit the home run for that run, for the Red Sox.
- 1:19:30Meanwhile, the Cardinals have had base runners all over the place.
- 1:19:38Now the signal given.
- 1:19:43From the belt.
- 1:19:45No fish.
- 1:19:47Popped up.
- 1:19:48That'll be an easy out.
- 1:19:50Hits from the catcher off at the mask, getting under the ball and he takes it.
- 1:19:53McCarver fouls.
- 1:19:55No runs, one hit.
- 1:19:57No errors, one miss.
- 1:19:59At the end of four and a half innings, the score is single and one miss.
- 1:20:02Fostered one.
- 1:20:05Does the mystery of buying tires scare you a little bit?
- 1:20:12Who can blame it?
- 1:20:13You walk into the average tire store and the place is loaded with mysterious goings on.
- 1:20:20Even the language they use is mysterious and confusing.
- 1:20:23Terms like low profile, cross brace tread.
- 1:20:26It's like a bad dream.
- 1:20:28Well, the nightmare is over.
- 1:20:30B.F. Goodrich has swept away the mystery of tire buying with straight talk.
- 1:20:34All you do at B.F. Goodrich is tell them how you drive.
- 1:20:37How fast, how much.
- 1:20:39And they tell you what tire is best for you.
- 1:20:41They do it with a tire value calculator.
- 1:20:44A little device that sizes up your driving habits and picks the one B.F. Goodrich tire that suits you best.
- 1:20:50They even save you money.
- 1:20:53Never again will you be caught in a weather confusion on tire buying day.
- 1:20:58Straight talk from B.F. Goodrich.
- 1:21:00We'll see to that.
- 1:21:18Runge Schmitt leads it off.
- 1:21:33Knockout seven.
- 1:21:49It's a good game to be honest and now Mariss comes over.
- 1:22:05Mariss makes the gap.
- 1:22:06They almost collide.
- 1:22:09Mariss crossed in front of a flood.
- 1:22:13They banged each other.
- 1:22:15the right fielder's eyes, but it'll get a little worse as the game progresses.
- 1:22:23Gibson, Russ Gibson, right-handed batter will be the hitter here.
- 1:22:30Ball game and a fifth tied up 1-1.
- 1:22:35I tell you, these first five innings have had a lot of action, although the score is only 1-1.
- 1:22:43They tell me, Yatsremski, here's the pitch and there's a strike ball.
- 1:22:51They say Yatsremski could run for mayor. I think he could run for governor.
- 1:22:57In this state, here's the pitch. High pop ball back. Two strikes, no ball.
- 1:23:04Happy to see it for the youngster, Peely. He's a wonderful lad. And he had a couple of years when things were a little tough for him around here.
- 1:23:17But he rallied like the thoroughbred and he's had a tremendous season. Here's the pitch. High.
- 1:23:23Russ Gibson, who hit 2-0-3 during the regular season, he had one homer.
- 1:23:29Or day, Santiago had one homer during the regular season and now he has hit one in the World Series.
- 1:23:35Here's the pitch. He almost chased it. Stopped in time.
- 1:23:42The count evens up. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:23:47Ready to hear the hand that Santiago probably will get when he comes up next. Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:53He struck him out. The eighth strikeout for Gibson.
- 1:23:57There's two outs. Listen to the hand for Jose Santiago.
- 1:24:16A homer with a count of two strikes and no balls in the third.
- 1:24:20Right-handed batter. Here's the pitch. There's the strike call.
- 1:24:24Santiago with eight hits during the regular season. One of them a homer.
- 1:24:34Down to fifth. He had a good cut.
- 1:24:38I tell you, he's no joker about that.
- 1:24:41Whenever you swing a bat like that, you're liable to hit a homer. He had a cut.
- 1:24:45Two strikes, no balls. Two outs, nobody on. Gibson fifth.
- 1:24:49He's always got a curveball striking out. So that's nine strikeouts for Gibson in five innings.
- 1:24:58And one, two, three. No runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left. At the end of five, the Cardinals won Boston one.
- 1:25:05Hello, this is the two o'clock. Limit 68.
- 1:25:09And the beat goes on. Yes, the beat goes on.
- 1:25:16Last year, over a quarter million owners of other low-priced cars were won over to Plymouth.
- 1:25:22It started a movement of momentum, a beat, and the beat goes on at your Plymouth dealers.
- 1:25:29Styles have come and changed. Styles will go.
- 1:25:33Plymouth's beauty is not a bad thing. No, no, no.
- 1:25:40Plymouth's beauty does go on and on, as does your Plymouth dealers' great deal.
- 1:25:46See them now. They'll show you how last year's success cards are even more beautiful for 68.
- 1:25:53And the beat goes on. Yes, the beat goes on.
- 1:25:58And now, three important words from your nearby Plymouth dealers.
- 1:26:05Enjoy the game. We pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:26:11Hear all the Warrior games on KMBR, AM&FM, San Francisco.
- 1:26:16The man at the gas pump doesn't always remember to ask you if your wiper blades have gone dead and can't stop streaking your windshield.
- 1:26:22So if they are streaked, remind him to show you a pair of fresh new ANCO anti-wind lift blades or refills.
- 1:26:30He can slip them on in seconds, and you're ready for any storm.
- 1:26:35ANCO by Anderson.
- 1:26:38It's high time for Hyres Root Beer, high time for the distinctively satisfying taste that only Hyres Root Beer has.
- 1:26:45Harry Carrier, Sunway Park. We're going to the top of the 6th with the score all tied up. Boston 1, St. Louis 1.
- 1:26:52And now here to tell you all about it is Pee Wee Reese.
- 1:26:55Okay, Harry, thank you very much and a fine job. A job well done with the top half of the 6th and the first hitter for the Cardinals will be Mike Shannon.
- 1:27:02Let's see what he's done today. Shannon.
- 1:27:05He's won for two. Got a base hit his first time up in the second inning.
- 1:27:09Jose Santiago all the way for the Boston Red Sox. All hit hard as the base hit out of the center field.
- 1:27:16Reggie Smith, the center fielder, down on one knee, picks that ball up, and Shannon makes the turn at first base back in there.
- 1:27:23So these Cardinals, I'm telling you, they've done a little bit of everything today. They have one run on nine hits.
- 1:27:30They scored one run in the third inning. The Boston ball club tied it up.
- 1:27:33They have one run on three hits in the third inning on Jose Santiago's home run. Yes, sir, of all people.
- 1:27:41The pitcher, Bob Gibson, made a bad pitch to him with 0-2 count on him, and he put it up in that screen out over this big green wall in left field.
- 1:27:51The hitter now is the Daniel Little second baseman, Javier, and what a year he had. He's two for two today.
- 1:27:58He has good speed, hard to double this man up. Mike Jenner in his first base. Watch him. They like to run this ball club.
- 1:28:06A curve ball in there for Carl Strike one.
- 1:28:10This Cardinal ball club is called the Chicago White Sox with power. They like to run, and they do.
- 1:28:22If you throw them out, it doesn't bother them. They'll come back running again.
- 1:28:25The score is one and one, though. The Red Sox are right in there.
- 1:28:32A fellow in the left field, the name of Yostremski, made a couple of great plays.
- 1:28:37Threw a runner out at home. As Harry told you, charged the ball like a short stop, which he was at one time.
- 1:28:45Out here, because he was just kind of flat, the ball in the right field. He did not have too good of a cut.
- 1:28:51The count now is Owen Hughes. No balls and two strikes on Javier.
- 1:28:57Javier is a threat, a home run threat on this ball park. Any hanging, breaking ball, he'll hit on that screen.
- 1:29:04He's had quite a year. Yes, he has.
- 1:29:08Javier will be followed by the short stop, Darrell Maxwell, and then the pitcher, Bob Gibson.
- 1:29:14Don Diego takes a look at ten, and a curveball way outside makes the count one ball and two strikes on Javier.
- 1:29:22If the count gets two to two, two and two, be careful.
- 1:29:28Okay, May Sunday. Don Diego taking a little time.
- 1:29:33Javier checking with his coach, Joe Schultz, at third base.
- 1:29:36Javier has a closed stance. His front foot is laying, his front foot is back. Back foot is way back rather.
- 1:29:45Little tap is fouled, and a third base line, and a count remains. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:29:53Pee-wee Lee Stang is up on the bullpen for the Red Sox again. It's about the third time that he's gotten up out there.
- 1:29:58Tires are now here. One ball, two strikes on Javier, the second baseman. He has two for two today.
- 1:30:10On the season, better to find 281. He had 14 home runs. Good tire.
- 1:30:17That ball high on inside makes the count two and two.
- 1:30:20Well, let's see if they'll send him now with a count of two balls and two strikes.
- 1:30:27There's no one away, and the score here, Cardinals one and the Boston Red Sox one.
- 1:30:34The Cardinals have nine hits, and the Red Sox only have three.
- 1:30:38But one of them was a big one by the pitcher, a home run, Jose Santiago.
- 1:30:44Two and two is the count on Javier.
- 1:30:46Santiago looks to over his fan, and he did not go with a foul-tip.
- 1:30:56These same two teams will be right back here tomorrow.
- 1:31:01So, we certainly hope that you fans should be with us.
- 1:31:04Harry Carey and Ira Pee-wee Reese will be bringing you to tomorrow's game, the second game of the World Series, right here at Fenway Park.
- 1:31:10Certainly hope that you're enjoying the game today.
- 1:31:16I know one thing is a big thrill for me.
- 1:31:20Here comes the count of Javier. No one away. Runner on first base, Mike Shannon.
- 1:31:26Santiago comes second.
- 1:31:30The ball gets away from the pitcher, and here comes the runner, Shannon, diving in there.
- 1:31:35Yeah, head first dive like the old pepper martin of the Cardinals.
- 1:31:43No play, but Gibson as the ball gets away from him.
- 1:31:50And it was a pass ball on the catcher, Gibson.
- 1:31:54Well, the count's three balls and two strikes on Javier, who can handle that back.
- 1:32:04No one away. Let's see if he tries to hit that ball on the ground to the right, and gets the run of the third base.
- 1:32:10So, the fly ball will score it.
- 1:32:13The next hitter will be Dow Maxwell.
- 1:32:16Not too big of a lead by Shannon down in second base.
- 1:32:20Let's see if he comes up a couple of steps. There's a tap foul down the third baseline.
- 1:32:28They're playing Javier straight away.
- 1:32:32The right fielder, Ken Harrelson, he's playing in a few steps.
- 1:32:39Jastrzynski in that familiar spot of his out there in left field, straight away on practically every hitter.
- 1:32:45He can move. Jastrzynski, I'm talking about, quite a ball player.
- 1:32:52Does not have a hit in this game, but made a couple of great plays.
- 1:32:55A three and two pitch by Santiago. He's stuck it up!
- 1:33:07That's the fourth strikeout for big number 30, Santiago, as Javier goes down swinging.
- 1:33:13Brings up the shortstop, Dow Maxwell.
- 1:33:18He has grounded out twice. He's 0 for 2.
- 1:33:22During the season, he walked once and grounded out. He's 0 for 1 today.
- 1:33:30On the season, he batted 227.
- 1:33:33But Herrig, who has seen this young fella all year, said he's gotten some important hits.
- 1:33:39Like Shannon down at second base, the curve ball.
- 1:33:42Looks to me like Santiago has kind of settled down a little bit.
- 1:33:46He's gotten a couple of jams of first two innings of this ball game and pitched out of them.
- 1:33:53The score is 1-1.
- 1:33:56If Harlow scored 1 in the third, so did the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:34:00When the top half is fixed hitting, Santiago looks back at Shannon at second base who's dancing a little bit.
- 1:34:06That on curve ball has popped up and Gibson, the catcher, should have a shot.
- 1:34:10And here comes George Scott, look out!
- 1:34:14George Scott, Gibson, took the ball. The catcher, George Scott, ran right by.
- 1:34:20And I'm telling you, that's a lot of beef.
- 1:34:25George Scott, they call him Tater.
- 1:34:29I imagine maybe Russ Gibson has trouble with the ball.
- 1:34:32Because it's quite obvious in his territory, Scott had a run about 90 feet from his position.
- 1:34:39And boy, he was really motoring.
- 1:34:42Harry, I'm glad you noticed that because we were doing a game here the other day and Gibson lost two balls.
- 1:34:48Or two pop-ups the same way and George Scott caught one of them and couldn't get to the other one.
- 1:34:54So he had a little trouble picking the ball up here and the sun is very bright.
- 1:34:57The high fly out to the left field, Yoskintsev, shading his eyes, he's going to hit the ball and take it for out number three.
- 1:35:04That ball for the Cardinals here in the top half is fixed hitting.
- 1:35:07No one wants to hit no one as the one man left on base who has to foul and a half and he's a play.
- 1:35:12It's a table of Cardinals one and the Boston Red Sox one.
- 1:35:15I don't know.
- 1:35:17I don't know my name is Ron.
- 1:35:19I can't be 10-10.
- 1:35:21I'm not sure.
- 1:35:22I had a terrible experience the other day.
- 1:35:27I went to buy a pack of George Super Stainless blades with a Miracle Plastic coating on the edge.
- 1:35:33So I asked the man for George Super Stainless and he said they call it the spoiler.
- 1:35:38They said I don't have money to call it the spoiler.
- 1:35:41Why don't you answer the spoiler?
- 1:35:43Why do you come in here and ask for George Super Stainless?
- 1:35:45Did he scare me?
- 1:35:47I don't know what the hell he said.
- 1:35:48He said I don't have money to call it the spoiler from now on.
- 1:35:57Heads up hair groomers come up with a nice discovery for the man whose hair gets must.
- 1:36:03If you use heads up this morning don't put more heads up on.
- 1:36:07You can re-groom your hair anywhere you are with just a little water or a comb.
- 1:36:11We don't know how many times water will bring heads up back to life again after one application.
- 1:36:15All we can say is try it and see.
- 1:36:19Heads up hair groomers in bottles or tubes by Gillette.
- 1:36:24I'm here at the sixth inning here at Fenway Park.
- 1:36:28Hey Kerry and I'm Pee Wee Reese bringing you the first game of the World Series.
- 1:36:34Kerry it's quite a thriller.
- 1:36:36Yes and the Red Sox have a top of their batting order coming up Pee Wee with Jerry Adair stuffing in the bottom box right now.
- 1:36:42Adair he has struck out twice.
- 1:36:48Bob Gibson ball hit down to the third base but Mike Schenna makes a great play.
- 1:36:53What a play he made.
- 1:36:55That ball was right over the bag.
- 1:36:59A short hop in between her and he came up with it.
- 1:37:04Made a sad on toss to Orlando Savator getting Jerry Adair.
- 1:37:08Didn't look to me like Pepper Martin on that one.
- 1:37:12I tell you that young man deserves a lot of credit Pee Wee.
- 1:37:15He's become quite a third baseman.
- 1:37:17Never played the position before in his life.
- 1:37:20Dalton Jones takes the first pitch all one.
- 1:37:26Dalton Jones struck out and popped up.
- 1:37:29He's all for two.
- 1:37:34A fast ball and a dandy in there.
- 1:37:36A call strike one. One ball and one strike.
- 1:37:39The score here one run for the Cardinals nine hits.
- 1:37:44Boston one run on three hits.
- 1:37:47We're in the bottom half of the sixth inning of the Red Sox.
- 1:37:51Trying to go ahead of the Cardinals.
- 1:37:54We've had everything to happen in this game.
- 1:37:56Some real fine plays.
- 1:37:59Little hitting good pitching.
- 1:38:01Two balls one strike on Dalton Jones.
- 1:38:04Here's a fellow that looked real sharp for the Red Sox all other part of the season.
- 1:38:10A good hitter. They say they have a trouble finding a spot for under play.
- 1:38:15That pitch is outside.
- 1:38:16Dalton Jones will be followed by Carl Yostrowski.
- 1:38:20Ball right back to the middle of the base hit.
- 1:38:23Making the turn at first base.
- 1:38:26Dalton Jones up with the ball out in center field.
- 1:38:29Well you can hear the ball coming in.
- 1:38:32Dalton Jones is in the middle of the base hit.
- 1:38:35He's got a good shot.
- 1:38:37He's got a good shot.
- 1:38:39He's got a good shot.
- 1:38:41He's got a good shot.
- 1:38:42Ball out in center field.
- 1:38:46Well you can hear the old baseman.
- 1:38:49And he deserved it.
- 1:38:52Carl Yostrowski.
- 1:38:54He hasn't done anything at the back.
- 1:38:57But he's made a couple of great plays in the outfield.
- 1:39:04Went away. Dalton Jones on it for its base.
- 1:39:07The game is all tied up here at Fenway Park.
- 1:39:11Yostrowski takes the first pitch. It's low and outside for ball one.
- 1:39:17You know Bob Gibson had his ankle broken during the season.
- 1:39:24He's a big strong boy.
- 1:39:27He has pitched four times since coming back and he's looked real sharp.
- 1:39:32He won three of them.
- 1:39:34You saw him.
- 1:39:35You saw him Harry.
- 1:39:37Actually Peewee he pitched better after returning from the disableness than he did before.
- 1:39:44And he's throwing as well today as I've seen through at any time.
- 1:39:49One ball one strike on Carl Yostrowski who holds the bat high.
- 1:39:54Closed stance.
- 1:39:56Pulls the ball more than sheer.
- 1:39:58Bob Gibson good fast ball.
- 1:40:00Low and away.
- 1:40:01Yostrowski did not like the call.
- 1:40:05And of course the fans here at Fenway Park didn't like the call.
- 1:40:13Most of the sports writers have picked the cardinals to win this series.
- 1:40:22Yostrowski couldn't be no trouble for the left fielder Lou Brock.
- 1:40:27He's underneath the left fielder.
- 1:40:29And takes it first out of number two.
- 1:40:33You talk about nine challenge.
- 1:40:35You see on that fly ball Brock actually took his eyes off the ball to see where the runner,
- 1:40:41John Jones was and then located together and made the catch.
- 1:40:46I noticed that Harry.
- 1:40:47I thought he may be pulling some kind of a trick play there.
- 1:40:51That's kind of dangerous to take your eye off with that ball.
- 1:40:54But he did look to see.
- 1:40:55Where Dalton Jones was.
- 1:40:59He was going back to first base and it brings up Ken Harrelson.
- 1:41:05All for two.
- 1:41:07Tries to check his swing gets piece of the ball.
- 1:41:09Fouls it back.
- 1:41:13One strike on Ken.
- 1:41:14I got a big kick out of Ken Harrelson.
- 1:41:17On a Saturday.
- 1:41:18Big game with Minnesota.
- 1:41:23I said, Dewey, I'm telling you, I am really nervous.
- 1:41:27I said, whether to leave you.
- 1:41:30Ken, when the game starts, if it doesn't, you're in trouble.
- 1:41:34Fouls it straight back.
- 1:41:36Oh, and two.
- 1:41:37No balls and two strikes on Ken Harrelson.
- 1:41:40This fellow has good power.
- 1:41:42Start of the season now with Kansas City.
- 1:41:44Got a real good break, released and came over here with the first baseball club and won the pennant.
- 1:41:50A little extra money beside.
- 1:41:56Bob Gibson.
- 1:41:58He has struck out nine in this ball game.
- 1:42:01And he's on top of Harrelson.
- 1:42:03Oh, and two.
- 1:42:04Let's see how he pitches him.
- 1:42:06Now, he tried to get him go fishing, but he didn't go.
- 1:42:09Harrelson didn't go.
- 1:42:10Now, he tried to get him go fishing, but he didn't go.
- 1:42:13Harrelson held up.
- 1:42:15One ball and two strikes.
- 1:42:16A runner on it first base, Dalton Jones.
- 1:42:22The score of one and one in the bottom half, the sixth inning.
- 1:42:27Santiago all the way for the Red Sox.
- 1:42:30And Bob Gibson all the way by the Cardinals.
- 1:42:41He pops it up.
- 1:42:43In the car, a calling card.
- 1:42:45Here comes the pay to the car, but takes it.
- 1:42:47And that's all for the Red Sox here in the bottom half, the sixth inning.
- 1:42:51No runs, one hit, no errors.
- 1:42:52And one man left on base.
- 1:42:54The score after six ball innings.
- 1:42:56San Juan has won.
- 1:42:57And Boston won.
- 1:42:59Ready to go to the top of the seventh.
- 1:43:11And Lou Brock will be leading it off to the Cardinals.
- 1:43:13He's had a perfect day.
- 1:43:14Three out of three.
- 1:43:16And this is the third time in this ball game, can you read it?
- 1:43:18He's been the first man up in the inning.
- 1:43:21Now, he has been tough as you said, three for three.
- 1:43:23And you keep getting this man on you.
- 1:43:25Get yourself in trouble.
- 1:43:26Brock, could it be four for four?
- 1:43:28Yes, sir.
- 1:43:29A base hit out in the right field.
- 1:43:31By Jerry Adair, can't help snuff it.
- 1:43:33Brock makes a big turn, but goes back into first base.
- 1:43:40He has 52 stolen bases.
- 1:43:42We'll have to watch him.
- 1:43:44Now, Peewee's had two hits into center field, one hit to left field,
- 1:43:50and one hit to straight away right field.
- 1:43:52So he's hit the ball in every field today with getting four for four.
- 1:43:56I would say that he's pretty hard to defend against.
- 1:44:01And with his speed, he gets the ball down that line,
- 1:44:05and you'd better hustle back in here to have a triple.
- 1:44:09Kurt Flood, who's batting second and remarkably hitting 335.
- 1:44:16And that's a tough position to hit 330 in or hit 300,
- 1:44:20because a lot of times you have to give yourself up.
- 1:44:23By that I mean with a runner on second base,
- 1:44:26or that man if you hit and run a lot,
- 1:44:29you have to get a piece of that ball,
- 1:44:32you don't get your ball to hit.
- 1:44:34But here's a man hit 335.
- 1:44:36Had quite a year, Kurt Flood.
- 1:44:39A new Brock, and there he goes.
- 1:44:41A throw by Gibson, it's in, but he didn't get him.
- 1:44:44Throw was a little high, P. Weir, that I had on that time,
- 1:44:47but throw had been down a little bit.
- 1:44:49Pep Useli still thought he had him,
- 1:44:51but the throw was up around his eyes.
- 1:44:53By the time he came down, the lurch slid in there.
- 1:44:57What a day he has had.
- 1:45:00The score here, one run, ten hits for the Cardinals.
- 1:45:05One run, four hits for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:45:07For the Red Sox, they're going to have to get a little bit of a
- 1:45:10break, but they're going to have to get a little bit of a break.
- 1:45:14One run, four hits for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:45:16For the Red Sox, they're threatening.
- 1:45:18Here in the top half, the seventh inning.
- 1:45:20Kurt Flood, let's see if he goes to right field.
- 1:45:23As Kurt, as Lou Brock just stole second,
- 1:45:26to try to get him to third.
- 1:45:28That's what he was trying to do,
- 1:45:30and he bowed hard off the right in the stands.
- 1:45:34Lou Brock, he stole 52 bases.
- 1:45:37Very few of them were over to third base.
- 1:45:45Most of his stolen bases are from first to second.
- 1:45:50Four hits for Brock, kind of the series record he held for many.
- 1:45:54Nobody has ever had five.
- 1:46:00Her ball, just missed, low and outside.
- 1:46:03Two balls, one strike on Kurt Flood.
- 1:46:06I run her down at second base.
- 1:46:09Lou Brock.
- 1:46:12The game is all tied up one and one.
- 1:46:15Santiago all the way for the Red Sox.
- 1:46:18He's looking back at Brock.
- 1:46:23Foul tip, makes it count two and two.
- 1:46:26There's John Wyatt out on the bullpen,
- 1:46:28along with a 19-year-old youngster named John.
- 1:46:31A 19-year-old youngster named Ken Brett, three weeks.
- 1:46:35Of course, I've seen John Wyatt.
- 1:46:37I've never seen this young left-hander,
- 1:46:40but they say he can bring it pretty hard.
- 1:46:44Well, Kurt Flood did what he intended to do.
- 1:46:47He hit a ground ball down at George Scott,
- 1:46:50and he took the claim himself.
- 1:46:52But on the play, Brock moved to third.
- 1:46:56Now then, let's see if the infield will be playing in
- 1:46:59as big Roger Maris comes up.
- 1:47:03The score is one and one.
- 1:47:06The tie-breaking run is down at third base.
- 1:47:10In Lou Brock.
- 1:47:15One away. The infield is in.
- 1:47:18They're playing Roger Maris deep and straight away.
- 1:47:23Top half to seventh inning.
- 1:47:27I've never seen Brock steal home, Barry.
- 1:47:32That's funny, here it is.
- 1:47:34I used to be the same way.
- 1:47:36I used to steal quite a few bases when I played.
- 1:47:38I never did like to steal home.
- 1:47:40I was always afraid of that batter.
- 1:47:42It may not seem to be coming in there.
- 1:47:47That'll foul straight back.
- 1:47:49There's Sandy Elder trying to keep that ball
- 1:47:52down and away from Roger Maris.
- 1:47:56Brock back to third.
- 1:47:58Count as one ball and one strike, it's one away.
- 1:48:00Roger Maris on deck.
- 1:48:03Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:48:06And he has not given San Diego too much trouble today.
- 1:48:11Maris.
- 1:48:14One for two.
- 1:48:18As it hits its hand outside.
- 1:48:21Two balls and one strike as Maris checks with his coach Joel Schultz.
- 1:48:26At third base. Coaching at first base for the Cardinals.
- 1:48:30Dick Sissler.
- 1:48:38Jerry Adair came up with the ball but he has no play on Brock.
- 1:48:42He threw it for the ball.
- 1:48:44Down on his knees he had to flip the ball over to George Scott.
- 1:48:48That makes the score two to one in favor of the Cardinals.
- 1:48:54They have been threatening at every inning.
- 1:48:57But they still only have two runs off of San Diego.
- 1:49:00Ten hits. The Red Sox have one on four hits.
- 1:49:03Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:49:06He's on for three. Takes the first pitch.
- 1:49:09One ball on Orlando.
- 1:49:12San Diego.
- 1:49:17In there. Call strike one. One ball and one strike.
- 1:49:20San Diego looking for his...
- 1:49:22Well on the year he had twelve wins and four losses.
- 1:49:25The L.P.W. and the Cardinals have had ten hits and yet their two runs have scored on infield outs.
- 1:49:30Both time and Maris has given in the runs.
- 1:49:33The Red Sox have one on four hits.
- 1:49:36They have scored on infield outs. Both time and Maris has given in the runs with infield outs.
- 1:49:46As a line driver it's foul.
- 1:49:52It's been a strange game.
- 1:49:55It's a very interesting game.
- 1:49:58We had a lot of things happen in it.
- 1:50:00But as we said on goal it looks like the Cardinals
- 1:50:03should be about three or four runs out in threat.
- 1:50:07But this Red Sox ball club don't ever count them out.
- 1:50:11They have been coming from behind all year.
- 1:50:14They seem to thrive on pressure.
- 1:50:17They're a very competent ball club.
- 1:50:20As a pitch it's too high.
- 1:50:23Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:50:26In fact you may even think that they're a little cocky sometimes.
- 1:50:29But I guarantee you that doesn't hurt.
- 1:50:40The two and two pitch.
- 1:50:42He's stuck in the eye on a sidearm curve ball.
- 1:50:45That's all for the Cardinals here in the top half.
- 1:50:48The seven and eight.
- 1:50:50One run, one hit, no errors and no one left on base.
- 1:50:53The six and a half lead to play. It's a Cardinals two and the Boston Red Sox one.
- 1:50:59Notice how many infielders have the uncanny knack
- 1:51:02of always being right in front of the ball.
- 1:51:05They're in position, they're on their toes.
- 1:51:08And when the grounder comes they're right there to make the play.
- 1:51:11Well, you know most defensive drivers have the same ability.
- 1:51:15They know how to anticipate trouble and to be ready when it comes.
- 1:51:19When winter comes, and it won't be long now,
- 1:51:22they get set for snow and icy roads with a set of new snow tires.
- 1:51:26And the snow tires many good drivers prefer are PF Goodrich Trailmaker Silver Town.
- 1:51:32They're built of the Thomas Four-ply Nalon card
- 1:51:35and have the deepest biting edges you can buy.
- 1:51:38The Trailmaker trail is wide and deep,
- 1:51:40sends you over icy roads with sure footed safety.
- 1:51:43Trailmakers are quite, too.
- 1:51:46And they won't put you into the poorhouse either.
- 1:51:48You can get your Trailmakers for no money down.
- 1:51:51And if you want steel safety studs, your BFG dealer can handle that, too.
- 1:51:56So get into position for winter right now.
- 1:51:59Get Trailmaker Silver Town snow tires from your BF Goodrich Store R dealer.
- 1:52:12Bottom half, the seventh inning.
- 1:52:14Here at Fenway Park, Harry Carrey and I'm Pee Wee Reese
- 1:52:18bringing you the first game of the World Series.
- 1:52:21The St. Louis Cardinals lead in this game by a score of 2-1.
- 1:52:24George Scott up for the third time today.
- 1:52:29He's had two for two, a sing on a double.
- 1:52:32Bob Gibson, first pitch.
- 1:52:35In there for call strike one.
- 1:52:38Her ball is low and outside, makes it count one ball and one strike.
- 1:52:42They are playing this ball deep.
- 1:52:44Kurt Fudd is way back out there in center field.
- 1:52:47And I've seen George Scott hit a few in that dead center field.
- 1:52:50There's the ball hit out to shortstop.
- 1:52:52Down Maxville, one hopper, flips the ball over to Sepadeh.
- 1:52:56And that's all for George Scott for the first time today.
- 1:53:00A little slow, but he's got it.
- 1:53:03And that's all for George Scott for the first time today.
- 1:53:08A little shortstop, Rico Petrocelli is the hitter.
- 1:53:13He was a third strikeout and a seventh strikeout victim
- 1:53:16that Bob Gibson, he's old for two today.
- 1:53:23Petrocelli, supposed to be a good curve ball hitter.
- 1:53:27There's one in there for call strike one.
- 1:53:33Has good power for a little fella.
- 1:53:38Bob Gibson does not take too much.
- 1:53:40Another curve ball.
- 1:53:43Started, checked the swing, went around the umpire, Johnny Stevens said.
- 1:53:50Gibson, who is a fast pitcher, did not take too much time between pitches.
- 1:53:56A curve ball just missed.
- 1:54:00One ball and two strikes.
- 1:54:02The score here at Fenway Park, it's the Cardinals two.
- 1:54:05And the Boston Red Sox one.
- 1:54:07We're in the bottom half, the seventh inning.
- 1:54:09And it's one away.
- 1:54:12One ball and two strikes.
- 1:54:13Petrocelli goes down swinging.
- 1:54:17And that is the tenth strikeout for Bob Gibson.
- 1:54:24Reggie Smith, he's old for two.
- 1:54:25He struck out in the second inning and flew out to the right fielder his last time up.
- 1:54:32He has good speed.
- 1:54:36He's a little bit like Brock.
- 1:54:38He's just a young fella.
- 1:54:39Hits a whole lot like him.
- 1:54:41He's a switch hitter.
- 1:54:44Hits the ball to all fields.
- 1:54:46Has good speed.
- 1:54:49Curve ball, low and outside, ball one.
- 1:54:51Hits two away.
- 1:55:02A good fast ball, good swing, no contact.
- 1:55:05Makes a count, one ball and one strike.
- 1:55:09In Canada, Mexico, South America, more than 50 countries.
- 1:55:13Also the Armed Forces radio.
- 1:55:15Van Cocte de Berlis watching today's game.
- 1:55:18Over 200 million listeners, Harry.
- 1:55:24I'm glad you didn't tell me that earlier.
- 1:55:26You'd have made me nervous, Peewee.
- 1:55:29I'll never believe that.
- 1:55:31Two balls and one strike on Reggie Smith.
- 1:55:32He fouls it straight back.
- 1:55:34Makes a count of two and two.
- 1:55:36Peewee, you want to see something, a study of real concentration.
- 1:55:41Watch the way Gibson comes off that mound.
- 1:55:45If I remember correctly, he falls over towards first base a little bit, doesn't he?
- 1:55:49Quite a bit.
- 1:55:53You can see he really puts everything into the pitch.
- 1:55:57I know a fellow here that does that quite a bit.
- 1:55:59He even goes down with his glove, Henry's bare hands, releases the ball, Jim Bunning.
- 1:56:06Speaking of Jim Bunning, he had quite a year for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 1:56:11There's a high hopper that better hurry and Javier can do that.
- 1:56:15Can they get him?
- 1:56:16No, sir.
- 1:56:17Reggie Smith beat it.
- 1:56:26There was a high hopper right back over Bob Gibson's head.
- 1:56:28Javier, the second baseman, rushed in there.
- 1:56:31He had to hurry because Smith can fly, but he did not good it on the first rep.
- 1:56:39You miss one time with a fellow like Reggie Smith, a little block.
- 1:56:44One of these fast runners, you can just stick that ball in your hip pocket.
- 1:56:49Peewee, one of the few fellows with the Red Sox who's had World Series experience
- 1:56:53is coming out as a pinch hitter now, Norm Siebert.
- 1:56:55He was born in St. Louis, now makes his home outside Kansas City in Independence,
- 1:57:00a left-handed batter hitting for Russ Gibson,
- 1:57:03with the Red Sox having a time run at first and two away in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:57:10Dick Williams going to his bench.
- 1:57:13It's getting late in the ball game, and with the scorer,
- 1:57:17two to one in favor of the Cardinals, he's trying to get back in this game.
- 1:57:21Let's see what Siebert did on the year.
- 1:57:23He batted 2-0-5.
- 1:57:25No home runs, seven runs battered in.
- 1:57:29Big left-handed hitter.
- 1:57:31Fast ball in there for Colts right one.
- 1:57:35Reggie Smith on his first base with two away.
- 1:57:46I doubt seriously if Dick Williams will send Reggie Smith, putting a pinch hitter up there,
- 1:57:53but you don't know, there he goes.
- 1:57:55Look out, they may get him, and I think they do.
- 1:57:58Reggie Smith is thrown out on a good throw by Tim McCobbert.
- 1:58:02So that's all for the Red Sox here in the bottom half of the seventh.
- 1:58:06They take no runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left on base.
- 1:58:09The scorer at the seven full of things, the St. Louis Cardinals two,
- 1:58:12and the Boston Red Sox one.
- 1:58:14The 68 Chrysler's are here, with more power from a higher output 383 cubic inch V8,
- 1:58:34all the way up to a big 440.
- 1:58:37More luxury with new options like an in-track stereo tape system.
- 1:58:41Make your move here now to Chrysler's 68.
- 1:58:46You like its brand new style and epic performance at Chrysler's luxury,
- 1:58:51so make your move up to Chrysler.
- 1:58:57Move up to the move up.
- 1:59:05See your lawful Chrysler dealer. Make your move up to Chrysler now.
- 1:59:12We'll pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:59:16Your Jamaica ginger is the only kind of ginger that goes into Saratoga ginger ale.
- 1:59:22Why? To make a ginger ale that's different.
- 1:59:26One you can drink by itself, as well as a mixer.
- 1:59:29Take a sip and it's mellow, gingery, without snapping at you.
- 1:59:35Even the bubbles are different. High spirited, but long lasting, and never overwhelming.
- 1:59:41The people who make Saratoga Bishi just can't bear to make a ginger ale like everybody else.
- 1:59:47This is WGYWGFM Schenectady.
- 1:59:51Tarrie Tarrie and Phil Grease at Sunway Park.
- 1:59:54The Cardinals leading two to one, going to the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:59:58And that changes, Norm Siebert who is the pincher for Russ Gibson.
- 2:00:02When Reggie Smith was out trying to steal, which ended the seventh inning,
- 2:00:06stays in the ball game so he'll still come to bat.
- 2:00:10And since he bounded for Russ Gibson, his place in the batting order will be eighth,
- 2:00:14and he'll be playing right field, which means that Ken Harrelson is leaving the ball game.
- 2:00:20Siebert is now playing right field and Harrelson is out.
- 2:00:23We have a new catcher, he'll be Elston Bower, and I think a little bit of a surprise here for you,
- 2:00:28he seems to be the second man coming up in the eighth,
- 2:00:32unless they switch their batting order, which we'll have to get down from the press box.
- 2:00:37We have John Wyatt replacing Jose Santiago.
- 2:00:42Yes, it was a little surprise, as you said, Santiago who has accounted for the only run
- 2:00:49that the Red Sox have here.
- 2:00:53He had a home run in the bottom half of the third, then he scheduled up to be the second hitter.
- 2:00:58He's been taken out of the game, I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with him.
- 2:01:02Manager Dick Williams has switched his batting order by making the multiple change.
- 2:01:07He's able to place Elston Howard ninth in the batting order,
- 2:01:11so he has Siebert and Howard coming up.
- 2:01:14So, put your Wyatt actually will be in Harrelson's place in the batting order.
- 2:01:19Thank you, Harriet.
- 2:01:22The first hitter to face, John Wyatt, Jim McCarver.
- 2:01:30That bitch is low and inside, ball one.
- 2:01:33Go ahead and the top half the eighth, honey.
- 2:01:37The Cardinals lead in this ball game by a score of two to one,
- 2:01:41the first team of the World Series.
- 2:01:49John Wyatt takes a little more time than Santiago did.
- 2:01:53There's a little lazy looper out in the center field.
- 2:01:55Reggie Smith comes in and takes it for out number one.
- 2:02:00So, Carver is all for three on the day.
- 2:02:03Santiago won seven innings, gave up ten hits, two runs.
- 2:02:09He got five and walked three.
- 2:02:15It's one away that brings up Mike Shannon.
- 2:02:21Mike Shannon has two out of three, and he made a great play at third base.
- 2:02:33John Wyatt, who sat on curveball, low and outside, ball one.
- 2:02:38Alston Howard doing the catching.
- 2:02:40I know a lot of you fans remember him.
- 2:02:43A great catcher for the New York Yankees for so many years.
- 2:02:52There's that sat on curveball, Shannon.
- 2:02:56Fouls it straight back.
- 2:02:58It's a solid one strike on Mike Shannon.
- 2:03:09It'll be Jim Lombard.
- 2:03:13We thank for the Red Sox tomorrow, and a fellow by the name of Hughes for the Cardinals.
- 2:03:19Dick Hughes and Larry Jaster is working in the Cardinal bullpen out there in right field, by the way, can you see me?
- 2:03:27Larry Jaster, a left-hander, doing a little throwing out in the Cardinal bullpen in case Bob Gibson gets in any trouble.
- 2:03:39One ball and one strike pitch, it's too high.
- 2:03:45The Cardinals, first to score in this ball game, they scored one in the third inning.
- 2:03:52Alston tied it up right back in the third inning on a home run for Jose Santiago.
- 2:03:58And the Cardinals scored another one in the seventh inning.
- 2:04:08It'll be Jim Lombard.
- 2:04:12We thank for the Red Sox tomorrow, and a fellow by the name of Hughes for the Cardinals.
- 2:04:18Dick Hughes and Larry Jaster is working in the Cardinal bullpen out there in right field, by the way, can you see me?
- 2:04:25Larry Jaster, a left-hander, doing a little throwing out in the Cardinal bullpen in case Bob Gibson gets in any trouble.
- 2:04:37One ball and one strike pitch, it's too high.
- 2:04:43The Cardinals, first to score in this ball game, they scored one in the third inning.
- 2:04:49Boston tied it up right back in the third inning on a home run by Jose Santiago.
- 2:04:56And the Cardinals scored another one in the seventh inning, and they lead 2-1.
- 2:05:012-2 is a count on Mike Shannon, for the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:05:08The first two games will be played here at Fenway Park, then it will be an off-day Friday.
- 2:05:16And we'll move to good old St. Louis for three games, and the more needed will be right back here to Boston.
- 2:05:26The 2-2 pitchers foul back remains 2-2 on Mike Shannon as he walks over to get a little rosin on his ends in the on-deck circle.
- 2:05:37Javier.
- 2:05:44Javier's had two for three today.
- 2:05:47And Lou Brock, what a day he's had.
- 2:05:51Four for four.
- 2:05:54Two stone bases, and that ties a series record.
- 2:05:58Gal Bermini, there's a high pop-up.
- 2:06:02Your Strip-Ski goes over, Reggie Smith comes over, your Strip-Ski takes it.
- 2:06:06Out number two.
- 2:06:11Nobody has ever had five hits in one game.
- 2:06:18Why would a wonderful move by a Red Sox manager, Dick Williams, be waiting?
- 2:06:22The way he's changed is batting harder now.
- 2:06:24Instead of having his eight plays hitting catcher and his pitcher coming up, he's got Seabrook, Elston Howard, and Jerry Endaire as his first three hitters in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:06:34I would say he's stanking a little bit.
- 2:06:37He's done all year.
- 2:06:43Javier swings on a curve ball, no contact, strike one.
- 2:06:53Well, I'm sure that's the reason he sent Reggie Smith down to steal second base in the last inning.
- 2:07:01He got thrown out, he's going to leave him in there so he'll still be up this inning.
- 2:07:06A good shot on curve ball by John White, and that was by the way of third base.
- 2:07:12Leave a mate knee-clinch a little bit up here.
- 2:07:19O-and-two on Javier, the third baseman guarding the line. In it not even with the bag. Curve ball outside.
- 2:07:35Boy, Peewee, this Wyatt is wicked on that right-handed hitter. He really wheels from the side.
- 2:07:39Yes, he does.
- 2:07:46He has a good sinker.
- 2:07:52Fast ball, he caught him looking. That's all for Javier, and that's all for the Cardinals here in the top half of the eighth inning.
- 2:07:58No runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left on base. After seven and a half innings of play, San Maros Cardinals 2 and the Boston Red Sox 1.
- 2:08:08Now we're happy to present the worst person of the week. Our scouts have made their selection of worst person and every man's...
- 2:08:14I don't know, you know, the awful things I've done.
- 2:08:17Okay, now you are a family man. Did your wife know how awful you were when you got married?
- 2:08:22Well, she got an inkling of it when I refused to say I do at three different wedding ceremonies.
- 2:08:26That's terrible. What are some of the latest dreadful things you've been doing?
- 2:08:29Going to a department store wearing a carnation, looking like a floor walker. People ask me directions, I send them to the wrong floor.
- 2:08:35Despicable.
- 2:08:36I like to drive on the turnpike in weekend traffic and purposely run out of gas in the middle lane. Then they get out of the car and just shrug a lot.
- 2:08:42I've seen you.
- 2:08:43The worst thing I do is to my own family. I hide the can of right guard just when they're all getting ready for big night out.
- 2:08:49They all share the right guard?
- 2:08:51Well, that's the beauty part of it. It's a spray, see? And they all use it. So I don't leave just one or two defenseless. I leave them all. Six defenseless.
- 2:09:00You certainly are the worst person of the week.
- 2:09:02Thank you. And another horrible thing I do is leave myself defenseless.
- 2:09:05That's not us.
- 2:09:06Carrie Carrie and Pee Wee Reese from Fenway Park. You know, Pee Wee knows the first time the Cardinals have been retired in order in this whole ballgame.
- 2:09:16And it took a new pitcher to do it, John Wythe. Bob Gibson first pitch to Norm Siebert. It's a base hit out of the center field.
- 2:09:23Heart flood up with the ball. Siebert making the turn at first. I imagine we'll have a pitch runner for Norm Siebert. Yes, sir. Here he comes out of the dugout as Jose Cardaball running for Norm Siebert.
- 2:09:37As Norm Siebert hits the first pitch, a line drive and straightaway center field.
- 2:09:41And you can hear these partisan fans here at Fenway Park. They're coming to life. And that brings up Elston Hart.
- 2:09:50Will Dick Williams bunt to try to tie this ballgame up?
- 2:09:56Oh, but he left. Elston Hart hit away.
- 2:09:59Now, let's see. Bob Gibson looks over Cardaball. He bunched the ball, fouled down the first base line.
- 2:10:06Ron Willis, a right hander, and Joe Harner, a left hander, are working now on the Cardinal bullpen.
- 2:10:13One strike on Elston Hart. The score, 2-1. We're in the bottom half of the eighth inning. It's the Cardinals over the Red Sox here at Fenway Park.
- 2:10:22And the fans have come to life. Did he foul it? He butted the ball. The umpire said it was fair.
- 2:10:33It was funded rather high, and the Cardaball started to go to second base of the ball. But Cardaball, and it had good speed.
- 2:10:40Harner decided not to, so he had to go to first base. So Elston Hart gets a sacrifice, and that brings up Jerry Adair.
- 2:10:49Adair is 0-3, struck out twice and grounded out to the third base in his last time-up.
- 2:10:58He'll be followed by Dolph and John. Bob Gibson has 10 strikeouts.
- 2:11:06He looks to me like he has not lost any of his stuff. He looks back at the winner. There's a pitch.
- 2:11:15Kind of jammed there, but he fouled off the right. Strike one.
- 2:11:20Adair, the last game here Sunday against the Minnesota Twins on a double play, tagging the runner between first and second.
- 2:11:30He had a spike. He had seven stitches take his leg. Ask him about it today. He said a little sore, but he wouldn't stare at this game for anything.
- 2:11:38Orlando Cepeda wants some sunglasses, as Joel Schultz, one of the coaches, for the Cardinal, brings them out.
- 2:11:49Cepeda standing out by the dugout. He's checked about three of them. Now the fans are getting on him a little bit.
- 2:11:59One strike on Jerry Adair. The tying run down at second base in Jose Tartabal. He was a pinch runner for non-sever who started with setting off with a base hit.
- 2:12:15Gibson taking a little more time. As the ball hit out to centerfield, should be no trouble for Kirk Fudd. He has to come in. Tartabal is not tagging up.
- 2:12:25Back to the bag goes Tartabal. The throw goes to the shark stop and that's full. And it's still right.
- 2:12:35Dalton Jones. He's one for three. He got a base in his last hand up. And Jones, I know that both of these clubs have scouted each other and scouted each other thoroughly.
- 2:12:51I know that Dalton Jones is a pretty good hitter. Yes and this might be a very, very key moment in this ball game because if the Cardinals can retire Dalton Jones, it means that they will still hold their 2-1 lead.
- 2:13:03In more order, it means that the next time they face Jaskierowski in the ninth inning, he'll be the leadoff man. He'll be coming back with nobody on base rather than if Jones gets on, Jaskierowski will be coming up in the spot to break him up.
- 2:13:18It's true if you can keep those big hitters leading off, you're in a much better shape. There's a little lazy pop up, should be no trouble. Max Foll is shark stop. Backs up and takes it for out number three.
- 2:13:28That's all for Dalton Jones and that's all for the Red Sox here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. No runs, one hit, no errors and one man left on base.
- 2:13:35The score after eight fraudings, the Cardinals two and the Boston Red Sox still one.
- 2:13:43I've done it again. Done what again? Come out without cigarettes. Well here, try one of mine. No, that's okay. I'm here. Try one of mine. Have a Salem.
- 2:13:55Say hello, do you need a man? I'll take you back. I'll give you a place for you. Say hello, do you need a man? I'll take you back. All of the men I gave you. Thank you. I love it.
- 2:14:14Don't say the rest. Don't say anything. I'm the best. Say hello, do you need a man? I'll take you back. You were blind and I felt all the best.
- 2:14:27I won a ride.
- 2:14:29I'll take you to Salem. I'll take you to Salem. I'll hold you tight through the night.
- 2:14:45The Cardinals leading two to one. Lou Brock will be coming up in the ninth inning and has a chance to become the first player in World Series history to get five hits in one game. But our next goal, waiting at the plate and here to tell you all about it, is Pee Wee Reese.
- 2:15:00Okay, Harry. If San Diego loses this game, he stands to be the loser right now unless the Red Sox do something about it. The first pitch to Max was in there for call strike one. It'll be his first loss since July the 5th when he lost at Anaheim.
- 2:15:19In relief, also his first loss at Fenway Park since April the 23rd as a curveball that's outside by John White. One ball and one strike. He was beaten 75 by the Yankees in relief.
- 2:15:35He was 81 at home during the season. That's Jose San Diego. John White on the mound now for the Red Sox as a curveball just got the outside corner.
- 2:15:57All for two for Darrell Maxwell. Curveball too high. Makes the count two and two. Wyatt did a real good job on Javier the last time up there. He sat on him, curved him twice.
- 2:16:11Got him looking for that curveball and he popped a fastball right down the middle. He's kind of tough to stay in there against Ray Henry. There's a foul ball straight back and the count remains two and two.
- 2:16:23Bob Gibson. The big pitchers the next hitter. When the Cardinals lost Bob Gibson this year, it looks like they had lost the pennant.
- 2:16:37But a couple of young pitchers, a name of Hughes and Brails, did a terrific job for the Cardinals. There's another foul off the right and the count remains two and two. Darrell Maxwell the first hitter for the Red Sox for the Cardinals.
- 2:16:53You in the top half the ninth inning with the score Cardinals two and the Red Sox one. They tell me this Brails has a real fine curveball. Yes he has a good line fastball, fine control and he's very competitive.
- 2:17:10The two and two pitch. It ain't necessary, held up. Makes the full count, three and two. The pitcher disposed of pitch to Mar. Dick Hughes, what does he throw? Fastball and slider. Pretty good curve.
- 2:17:26Good control. He's not afraid, that helps. Three and two pitch. Outside, John White walks the eighth place hitter.
- 2:17:41Down Maxwell, that brings up Bob Gibson. He's checking with his coach at third base, Joe Schultz. You know this might military against Lou Brock's chance at a record-breaking five-nilts because Gibson succeeds in advancing Maxwell.
- 2:17:56He'll leave first base open and the Red Sox perhaps will have a chance to catch around Brock. We'll have to wait and see what happens. Yes sir, Lou Brock has four for four. Let's see what Gibson does if he does sacrifice Darrell Maxwell.
- 2:18:15Perry has a good point, but when you got a fellow batting in back of you but hitting 335, jump and Kurt Flood. Gibson squads around the front, he does make a butt down to first base line, Elson Harvich and roll foul.
- 2:18:36It was a good butt. If we'd have gotten the job done, would Elson Harvich let the ball roll foul. Gibson now coming back to the plate and back to first base Darrell Maxwell.
- 2:18:52I don't think it's necessary to remind anybody the importance of this extra run in a two-to-one ball game playing on the road. Yes sir, the Red Sox. There's a butt. Look out, George Scott comes up with it.
- 2:19:11Hannibal semi-line bow and Scott charging in. Retired Bob Gibson, he started to flip the ball back to Jerry Adair who was coming first base, but Maxwell who was wide awake was back in there in plenty of time.
- 2:19:30What Harry was talking about, the score 2-1 and the Red Sox get someone on in the ninth inning if they can butt. Now they have to get two men on. Makes a big difference.
- 2:19:46It's a pitcher that'll relieve two. Well let's see now, Blue Bronx looking for a serious record. He has four straight hits. No other player has ever had five. Four foot four. Darrell Maxwell on it first. Fastball outside. It's one away.
- 2:20:11Two runs on ten hits for the Cardinals. One run on six hits for the Red Sox. They play Lou Brock straight away. And deep. Had a good ripple. But no contact. One ball and one strike on Lou Brock.
- 2:20:32Darrell Maxwell on it first base. George Scott the big first base and holding close. This Cardinal Ball Club likes to run. And do. They've had quite a few opportunities today, but have not cashed in on too many of them.
- 2:20:53Currball inside. Nelson Howard makes a fine stop with that ball. Saves a wild pitch for John Wyatt.
- 2:21:15We have a new right fielder, Jose Tartabull as he went in to run for Norm Siebenerle. I say he is gone in the right field.
- 2:21:27Brock takes a pitch that's outside. Three balls and one strike.
- 2:21:33Right now with Coach Flood in the on deck circle, he is checking with his third base coach, Joel Silks. See if he wants him to do anything when he gets up there. Which a lot of times a coach at third base will do. He will give the sign to you while you're in the on deck circle.
- 2:21:54We're in the top half of ninth inning. The Red Sox have only one more chance as they trail in this game by a score of two to one.
- 2:22:05Ball forward so Lou Brock does not get a chance to get his fifth inning, fifth hit in this ball game here in the top half of ninth inning. And that brings up Kurt Flood if we're in the way.
- 2:22:21Now pay way the Cardinals have had. Fifteen base runners. Ten on hits and five on walks today.
- 2:22:31Only scored two runs and they lead two to one.
- 2:22:37Runners on first and second. Kurt Flood is a hitter. It's one away.
- 2:22:46John Wyatt takes plenty of time. And Kurt Flood has a real good cut at it and fouls it back on the straight. Let's see what Kurt Flood has done today.
- 2:22:56He struck out. A base hit lined out to left field and graded out at the shortstop his last time up. He's one for four.
- 2:23:14Here's a cool three thirty five on the season.
- 2:23:27That's a ball hit out of the right field. Todd Tartaboll should come up over. He does. Nice catch. Back to second base.
- 2:23:33Down Maxwell. Back to first. You better believe that ball was hit pretty hard. But Tartaboll was right there.
- 2:23:49Big picture for the Cardinals. Bob Gibson prior to the ninth inning he has missed 35 series innings and struck out 41.
- 2:24:05Roger Maris. Roger Maris has driven in both runs for the Cardinals on ground out. It's hit hard but it's gone foul down the first baseline.
- 2:24:22One strike on it. You know the way Flood was robbed of a great catch by Yostrumsky the fifth. And he hit this ball real well too and right center that Tartaboll grabbed.
- 2:24:35And you know it was his ground out. The neighbor Brock who advanced to third base in the seventh inning when he hit behind the runners.
- 2:24:42Finding out if he needed a team lead would do that. His ability to do that actually is a difference in this ball game because then Maris bounced out and the Cardinals scored a run which by virtue of which they lead now 2 to 1.
- 2:24:54That's very important to get that runner from second to third. And John Wyatt committed a bop. He made a move.
- 2:25:07He didn't come on through with it. And so Maxwell goes over to third with a little Brock down to second.
- 2:25:19One strike on Roger Maris. Talking about Flood hitting that ground ball to the first baseman to get the run over to third.
- 2:25:28There's a ball hit out into left field. Yostrumsky. He's shading his eyes with his glove. He takes it for the third out. And that's all for Maris and that's all for the Cardinals who are in the top half of ninth inning.
- 2:25:40No runs, no hits, no errors and two men left on base. It's four after eight and a half and they're playing still but Cardinals 2 and the Boston Red Sox 1.
- 2:25:51If you want to get home safe in this game you sometimes have to come in on a slide and that's baseball.
- 2:25:58When you're drowning around on an icy road this winter, well, that's no time to play around.
- 2:26:04Sure footed traction is what you need for safety. No sliding or skidding will do.
- 2:26:09And that's why we suggest be a good rich trail maker, Silver Town, snow tar.
- 2:26:15Trail makers give you a solid footing even on the slipperyest road. The wide modern tread takes hold, gives you the traction you need in the takeoff.
- 2:26:25And the deep biting edges take you around the turn without trouble.
- 2:26:29BFG trail makers are filled with tough nylon cards to give you more safe driving miles.
- 2:26:36Sure it's possible to pay less for a snow tar but BFG's four-plow nylon construction means many winners of safe driving.
- 2:26:44Get BFG trail makers, Silver Town snow tar, for no money down and free installation at your nearby BF Goodrich store or dealer.
- 2:26:54They're a good way to get a good start this winter.
- 2:27:03We're going into the bottom of the ninth and Cardinals are leading 2 to 1 and three-way here's the big man, Klawiostromski.
- 2:27:10We've delivered all year long in these kind of situations. Can he do it again?
- 2:27:15Well they've set the stage for him and as you said he has done it so many times this year.
- 2:27:23Of course he hasn't done it against Bob Gibson. A curve ball in there for call strike one.
- 2:27:35He hasn't done too much today. Has not hit the ball hard. He's all for three.
- 2:27:49That ball good. Balls down to left field.
- 2:27:52Low Brock over in front of Kurt Flood and takes it for out number one.
- 2:27:57He had it started in the right direction but it was not hit hard enough.
- 2:28:01That's one up and one down and the pinch hitter is Foy.
- 2:28:09Joe Foy.
- 2:28:13Batting par.
- 2:28:16John White.
- 2:28:18That's good power. He hits 17 long arms on the year.
- 2:28:23Batting 251. We're in the bottom half of the ninth inning and the score is 2 to 1.
- 2:28:35Inside, ball two.
- 2:28:43Bob Gibson on the mound for the Cardinals all the way.
- 2:28:48He is given up six hits in one run. Foy chops down on that high fastball foul to the back.
- 2:28:58Red Shandies walking up down that dugout over there.
- 2:29:04Keeping a close eye on Bob Gibson.
- 2:29:08One thing you don't have to worry about too much is this big fella getting tired.
- 2:29:12As a foul off the right, the Cardinals are going back to him. You have no chance.
- 2:29:18And the count remains. Two balls and two strikes.
- 2:29:24And Joe Foy.
- 2:29:26Pinch hitting par. John White.
- 2:29:29The next hitter will be old George Tater Scott.
- 2:29:36He's had himself a couple of hits today. A single and a double.
- 2:29:39He's two for three.
- 2:29:43The last chance for the Red Sox. Ball hit back through the middle but Max for the shortstop.
- 2:29:48Over to cut it off. Over to Tater and it's two down.
- 2:29:52One more chance.
- 2:29:54We're in the ninth inning here at Fenway Park.
- 2:29:57Harry Carrey and I'm Pee Wee Reese.
- 2:30:00We certainly enjoyed bringing you this first game of the World Series.
- 2:30:06Pee Wee there's two out, nobody on base. A guy up there that could tie the game.
- 2:30:10He's got that kind of power. George Scott.
- 2:30:12And the Cardinal catcher Tim McCarver is taking no chances.
- 2:30:15He's going out to talk to Bob Gibson. They want to make sure that they're in accord as to what they want to do.
- 2:30:22To the one man that stands between the first game victory in this World Series and perhaps a defeat.
- 2:30:27So right Harry. Don't make a mistake now.
- 2:30:30McCarver probably told him.
- 2:30:33He's got to get the ball down or keep it up. How are they going to pitch him?
- 2:30:36There's a fast ball. It's a little high on inside.
- 2:30:39Because you remember the only run that the Boston Red Sox got back in the third inning with a two strike, no ball count on San Diego.
- 2:30:48Bob Gibson made a bad pitch turn. He hit in the screen.
- 2:30:52Far home run.
- 2:30:54They count now on George Scott.
- 2:30:57Two balls, no strikes. It's two away.
- 2:30:59Just half the nine to be the last chance for the Red Sox.
- 2:31:04It's too low. Ball three. The next hitter Rico Petrocelli.
- 2:31:11Petrocelli, I would say he's due. He struck out the second, the fourth, and the seventh.
- 2:31:20In there for call strike one as George Scott was taking all the way.
- 2:31:24But I don't believe he'll be taking this time if this fast ball's in there to his liking.
- 2:31:31The out of half a ninth inning.
- 2:31:34Good swing, no contact for George Scott. Curveball, I think he was looking for that fast ball.
- 2:31:39Yes, and Peewee, that might have been the best breaking ball he's thrown all day.
- 2:31:42He really snapped it off.
- 2:31:46Two to one.
- 2:31:48In favor of the Cardinals.
- 2:31:51Bottom half to ninth inning. The last chance right here for the Red Sox.
- 2:31:59No sir, he didn't go around.
- 2:32:01But George Scott gets the base on ball.
- 2:32:06Peewee, that's the first pass that Gibson has made.
- 2:32:09The first walk he has issued.
- 2:32:12That's only the sixth man to reach base for the Red Sox.
- 2:32:15But they're in a spot where they can win the ball.
- 2:32:17And when Red Changes has gone out to talk to Bob Gibson, Orlando Cepeda comes out.
- 2:32:23The entire infield has converged.
- 2:32:27And I believe they have a role in World Series limiting the number of men who can talk to the pitchers.
- 2:32:32So shortstop down that hill, now that you're at Red Changes and Kim McArthur, along with Bob Gibson, are talking things over.
- 2:32:39We're going to have a pitcher here for the Red Sox.
- 2:32:43But we certainly are here and I'll say one thing for Williams.
- 2:32:48Patrick Selle, who can hit the long ball, he struck out three times today, Dick Williams knows this, so he's putting in Mike Andrews.
- 2:33:00Let's see what we have on Mike Andrews. He batted 263 for the year. Eight home runs, 40 runs batted in.
- 2:33:08Mike Andrews is the last hope now for the Boston Red Sox.
- 2:33:14Here's a fine young golf player. He's a second baseman.
- 2:33:18He should be around a long time. Chokes up on the bat. Bob Gibson, first pitchers, low it inside.
- 2:33:26Remember fans, it's two to one. We're in the bottom half of ninth inning.
- 2:33:34Two miles on top. It's two away.
- 2:33:39It's popped up. It should be all of a whip. Roger Marissa, right fielder going over underneath it and takes it for out number three.
- 2:33:47So that's all for Mike Andrews and that's all for the Boston Red Sox here.
- 2:33:51The bottom half of ninth inning, no runs, no hits, no errors. And one man left on base.
- 2:33:56Final score here at Fenway Park. The same old as Cardinals, two runs, 10 hits, no errors. Boston Red Sox, one run on six hits, no errors.
