- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We all have a tendency at times to ask God question, but why are
- 0:40you allowing this Lord or what's the purpose in this or how can
- 0:44anything good come out of this? We, we struggle at times with,
- 0:48with God's sovereign hand and, and his work in our lives.
- 0:52We have to understand there's always a bigger picture behind
- 0:55everything that happens in our lives.
- 0:57The Bible tells us and we all memorize the verse that all
- 1:01things work together for good, right?
- 1:03All things that means the bad things.
- 1:06There's a famous Carrie Underwood song called Jesus Take
- 1:10the Wheel, which is told from the perspective of a woman who
- 1:13miraculously survives a car crash.
- 1:16But in today's message, Pastor Clark teaches you that trusting
- 1:19Jesus doesn't require you to give him the wheel temporarily.
- 1:23Instead, you're supposed to fully surrender your life to
- 1:26him, even though you don't know where the road will lead.
- 1:29But fear not, God's Word teaches that He works everything out for
- 1:33the good of those who serve Him. Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:37book of Acts Chapter 4 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:41of Grace. So we are in the book of the
- 1:43Acts going through this book verse by verse study.
- 1:47Can we are in chapter 4 and this is verse 23 where the apostles
- 1:52had this gotten released from the incarceration from the
- 1:56authorities and the empire there that were trying to control them
- 2:00and not allow them to share their faith in the streets.
- 2:03They got delivered from this abuse and persecution.
- 2:07And now they're going back to report to the rest of the group
- 2:11that they are in communion with the body of Christ to pray for
- 2:15boldness. So we'll pick it up here in
- 2:17verse 23. And being let go, they went to
- 2:20their own companions and reported all that the chief
- 2:24priests and elders had said to them.
- 2:26And so when they heard that, they raised their voice to God
- 2:29with 1 accord and said, Lord, you are God who made heaven and
- 2:33earth and the sea and all that is in them.
- 2:37So right away they're worshipping God for His
- 2:39sovereign power and His ability to understand that God's always
- 2:44in control no matter what is happening.
- 2:47They were going through some difficult times, being
- 2:49challenged by sharing their faith in the streets, and they
- 2:52were being told they couldn't do this anymore.
- 2:55And so instead of complaining about the authorities or asking
- 2:59God's vengeance upon the government, they went right to
- 3:02the Lord to praise Him. First of all, that in spite of
- 3:05everything that's happening in their lives right now, they know
- 3:08they're in the center of God's will and they know that He's in
- 3:11charge. Nothing's happening outside of
- 3:14God's awareness and His wisdom, and we have to keep that in mind
- 3:17when we go through difficult times in life and challenges
- 3:21that we don't understand. We have to realize that God is
- 3:23not abandoned us. He's always there with us and
- 3:26for us. He cares for us, He loves us,
- 3:29and he promises He'll never leave us or forsake us.
- 3:31And in those times of the dark nights of the soul that we all
- 3:35have, we have to get before the Lord and say, Lord, I believe,
- 3:38help my unbelief. Help me to stay faithful, not to
- 3:42to go backwards, but to trust in You even though I don't
- 3:45understand what is occurring right now.
- 3:48Jeremiah, the prophet in the Old Testament was told to go preach
- 3:51the word and he went to people that didn't want to hear what he
- 3:54was saying. And because of that, they
- 3:57eventually put him in prison. And he was upset with God
- 3:59saying, I don't want to do this anymore.
- 4:02I'm done, I'm resigning. I didn't sign up for this kind
- 4:05of stuff. And the Lord let him Stew in his
- 4:08own frustration. And eventually Jeremiah said, I
- 4:11cannot but help to preach the word because it's like fire in
- 4:16my bones. And so no matter what he wanted
- 4:19to do, no matter what he wanted to stop the one or run or
- 4:22whatever, he just had this constant urge in his heart to
- 4:25share the truth of who God is with people.
- 4:28And that's I'm sure the case with all of us.
- 4:31We have that same Holy Spirit in us.
- 4:33So they're worshipping God. And it's a good prayer dialogue
- 4:37here to sort of think about when we go to the Lord to pray, how
- 4:41do we start? Do we right away ask him about
- 4:43things or tell him our troubles, or do we worship him for who he
- 4:47is and how great he is? Because whenever you start a
- 4:50prayer like this of God being the creator of everything that
- 4:54exists, you begin to see how big God is as opposed to how small
- 4:59you might think he is. When you got the big problem in
- 5:02front of your eyes, you can't overcome and you're letting it
- 5:05bring you down and and give you a depression and discouragement.
- 5:08Well, here they're worshipping God together communally with one
- 5:12heart and one, one mind. And they referred to David's
- 5:17prayer and, and Psalm 2 as they're beginning to talk about
- 5:21the the greatness of God. And David recognized the
- 5:26greatness of God in his life and in his ministry.
- 5:28And he said in Psalm 2, why did the nation's rage and the people
- 5:32plot vain things? The kings of the earth took
- 5:35their stand and the rulers were gathered together against the
- 5:39Lord and against His Christ. And so since the beginning of
- 5:43time, the day when the Lord will completely eliminate the
- 5:46influence of Satan on this planet, on this earth, in this
- 5:50universe. And what a day that will be.
- 5:53But this is the testimony of what it's like to be a people of
- 5:57God living in a world without God.
- 6:00Look at the nations. Look how they raised.
- 6:02Look at all the ungodliness that's being legislated and the
- 6:05mandates that are being put upon different countries that have
- 6:09nothing to do with the greatness of who God is.
- 6:12Man wants to take control and he wants to run this world.
- 6:15And the more we try to run the world without the grace of God
- 6:20and the Holy Spirit, the more we destroy this world and destroy
- 6:23one another. The writer continues here for
- 6:26Truly in verse 27 against your holy servant Jesus, whom you
- 6:32anointed both Herod and Pontius Pilate with the Gentiles and the
- 6:36people of Israel were gathered together to do whatever your
- 6:40hand and your purpose determined before to be done.
- 6:44So he's listing here Luke these different characters that were
- 6:48responsible for putting Christ on the cross along with our sin,
- 6:52obviously putting him on the cross.
- 6:54And the big picture is here that God used all these players that
- 6:58are mentioned here to be part of the fulfillment of his plan to
- 7:03accomplish the prophetical plan that Christ would be crucified
- 7:08and that the world would come against him.
- 7:11And so they were just in communion, basically not even
- 7:14unaware of it, that they were supporting and fulfilling the
- 7:18plan of God even with their evilness.
- 7:21And He said that they did whatever his hand, your hand,
- 7:24your purpose determined before to be done.
- 7:28We, we think lots of times in life about certain things that
- 7:31occur and why they happen the way they do.
- 7:34And we all have a tendency at times to ask God question, But
- 7:38why are you allowing this Lord? Or what's the purpose in this or
- 7:42how can anything good come out of this?
- 7:44We, we struggle at times with, with God's sovereign hand in, in
- 7:47his work in our lives. We have to understand there's
- 7:50always a bigger picture behind everything that happens in our
- 7:54lives. The Bible tells us and we all
- 7:56memorize the verse that all things work together for good
- 8:00right all things That means the bad things, the heartbreaking
- 8:04things, the challenging things, everything all things work
- 8:07together for good to those who love God and are called
- 8:11according to his purpose. Then the next verse says for
- 8:14those he did for know he did predestined to become conformed
- 8:19to the image and likeness of his son.
- 8:21So the challenges of life and the heartache of life at times
- 8:25is making us a little more like Jesus.
- 8:28Jesus is the representative to us of how we are to live this
- 8:33life. We, we need to understand and
- 8:35experience a little bit of what he had gone through and what he
- 8:39went through for us so that we can begin to be humbled and
- 8:42begin to be interested in others more so than we maybe think
- 8:46about ourselves. And so he says now verse 29, to
- 8:51begin to petition Lord, look on their threats and grant to your
- 8:54servants that with all boldness they may speak your word.
- 9:00So this was what they were praying for.
- 9:03Lord, look at how they're trying to stop us from preaching your
- 9:06word. Look how the culture today is
- 9:09trying to undermine the authority of God and the world
- 9:13and the church and the Word, how in some parts of the world
- 9:16people are being persecuted and proclaiming this book, the
- 9:20Bible, as being the word of God and the truth of God.
- 9:24Lord, give us this grace. And Lord's aware of all these
- 9:28threats. He's aware of what we need.
- 9:31And we need to have boldness, all of us.
- 9:33And they needed boldness in this time to speak your word.
- 9:38So all of us at times we get nervous when we have a chance to
- 9:42share the Lord with people. Holy Spirit's got our chest sort
- 9:46of going and we know, Hey, I this is the Lord wants me to, to
- 9:50say something here. And sometimes we don't listen
- 9:55and we regret that. But there's always obviously
- 9:57other opportunities. But whenever he begins to work
- 10:01with us, we can't do this in our own strength to proclaim the the
- 10:06goodness in the word of God. We need the power of the Holy
- 10:08Spirit, all of us, to be able to follow through and give the
- 10:13message in the power of God. And so they're praying for
- 10:18boldness that they may speak the word.
- 10:20They were just threatened and told you will not speak this
- 10:23man's name, Jesus again to anybody.
- 10:27And they understood the consequences when they were
- 10:29being told that by those in authority.
- 10:33But then Peter said, well, we can't but help but the proclaim
- 10:36what it is that he's done and who he is.
- 10:38And, and they were obviously not going to listen to the edict of
- 10:42the governing authorities at the time.
- 10:45Later on, they say there's times in life where we have to obey
- 10:48God rather than man right. And we're probably living in
- 10:51days like that ourselves as a a country.
- 10:55We have to understand our rights as citizens and our rights as
- 10:58Christians. But our allegiance is really to
- 11:01one who created everything. It's not to any governing
- 11:05authority. We, we obey those who have
- 11:07authority over us. We pray for them, that kind of
- 11:09stuff. But whenever that authority
- 11:11circumvents the will of God, that's when all of us in our own
- 11:15conscience have to decide what are we going to do?
- 11:18Are we going to listen to God or are we going to fear man?
- 11:22And that's something that we are all, I'm sure, thinking about
- 11:26more in the days that we're living.
- 11:28And so then they also prayed that your word will have the
- 11:32power, obviously to change the lives, but by stretching out
- 11:34your hand to heal, it wasn't them praying.
- 11:37God give us the power to heal or create miracles, all this stuff.
- 11:41They always understood the apostles, that any miraculous
- 11:44power that was manifest was not manifest by anybody's human
- 11:49ability or the will of man. They were asking God to stretch
- 11:53out his hand. Jesus is the great healer.
- 11:56He's Jehovah Rapha, He's the great physician.
- 11:59He has the power to heal, still heals and he's able to stretch
- 12:03out his hand to heal. And that signs and wonders may
- 12:06be done through the name of your holy servant, Jesus.
- 12:09So in the early church, the amount of miracles that were
- 12:12occurring on any given day were just unbelievable.
- 12:16This is a common occurrence, signs and wonders miracles.
- 12:19And then so as a result of that, it got activity, it got people
- 12:23interested. Now a lot, not everybody that
- 12:25came to to experience miracles or to see miracles became
- 12:29followers of the Lord. Many of them just wanted the
- 12:32hype and the excitement, but they had no interest in
- 12:34repenting and living after the ways of God.
- 12:37But nonetheless, the Lord used this Apostolic authority in the
- 12:40beginning stages of the church to shape the church.
- 12:44And so then they continue there here in verse 32.
- 12:47And, and I'm thinking about like your life and mine, like this
- 12:50past week. Did you have an opportunity to
- 12:53share your faith with anybody? Did you have a chance to pray
- 12:56with someone, to do a random act of kindness for someone in the
- 13:01name of Jesus? Were you praying specifically
- 13:04for a situation to come to pass in someone else's life that you
- 13:08were burdened for that? Did you make a phone call to let
- 13:11someone know you were thinking of them or caring about them?
- 13:14These are all acts of power and boldness to come from the heart
- 13:19of God who dwells in US through us as the people of God that we
- 13:24might be instruments in his hands to be the hands and feet
- 13:28of Jesus in this world of, of, of struggle and and challenge.
- 13:32Cindy called me this week all excited.
- 13:34She says you wouldn't guess you believe what the Lord did for
- 13:37me. I, I visited this lady in the
- 13:39development of an older woman where my mom lives and she's
- 13:43having to like move out of her house and get rid of all her
- 13:46belongings and she has to move into one of the skilled nursing
- 13:50facilities. And she's, you know, you know,
- 13:52overwhelmed that she has to do this in her life.
- 13:54And she's looking at all the stuff and the memories and when
- 13:57her husband was alive and all the beautiful experiences they
- 14:00had. And her heart was sad that, you
- 14:03know, she didn't, she knew she couldn't take everything with
- 14:05her. And so Cindy said, why don't you
- 14:08look at the things that are most important to give you the most
- 14:10happy memories and just take those things.
- 14:13And so they were talking and then the Lord just put on
- 14:16Cindy's heart to ask the lady if she could pray for her.
- 14:20And the woman said yes. And Cindy was so blessed that
- 14:23she was able to be in that place providentially by God and a
- 14:27situation that she wasn't even planning on doing.
- 14:30The Lord just put on her heart to stop at this home and, and
- 14:33then the Lord opened the door for her to minister Jesus to
- 14:36this woman. And, and, and so the woman was
- 14:39blessed and she was touched and, and tears and that kind of
- 14:41stuff. But but Cindy was really blessed
- 14:44and, and, and I, I was blessed and I have a, a wife, obviously,
- 14:48who cares about people and, and wants to be used by the Lord,
- 14:51right? That's, that's awesome, right?
- 14:53And we all want to be that way. And it's all the work of the
- 14:57Holy Spirit. He's the one that sets these
- 14:59opportunities up. So they're they're talking about
- 15:01this work of God and then it says in verse 31, and when they
- 15:05had prayed, they were praying together with one heart and one
- 15:08mind where they were assembled together.
- 15:11It was shaken and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and
- 15:15they spoke the word of God with boldness.
- 15:17So I don't know how many people were here at this time, but it
- 15:20was the apostles and the church beginning stages of the people
- 15:24in the church. I'm sure a good number of people
- 15:26assembled there. It wasn't evidence that this,
- 15:29the apostles were filled, but the whole church was filled with
- 15:33the Holy Spirit. It wasn't another Pentecost.
- 15:36There's only one Pentecost. There's only one Calvary.
- 15:39But it was a replication, if you may, of the influence and the
- 15:43power of God being able to continually give the church and
- 15:49the believers the power to do the work of the ministry.
- 15:53And so, you know, we pray here, God, fill us with your spirit.
- 15:57Fill us today as we're studying your word, Phyllis, as we
- 16:00worship Phyllis, so that we go out of this place today
- 16:03different than when we came and that we all have our antennas up
- 16:06to want to be used by the Lord in a specific way, right?
- 16:10To be used by God, to be able to have the Lord put aside our
- 16:14obsessions and our compulsive natures at times of why I got to
- 16:18do all this stuff first, you know, and then maybe I'll have
- 16:22time to do some stuff that the Lord might be interested in.
- 16:25So that's the opposite, right? The Bible says seek first the
- 16:29Kingdom of God and His righteousness.
- 16:31Seek first His will, His plan, His purposes, and everything
- 16:36else you have need of will be added unto you.
- 16:39And so they were filled, and we'll read throughout the book
- 16:41of the Acts this tremendous work of God, the Holy Spirit filling
- 16:46them with His power. I get up sometimes in the
- 16:50morning and sometimes I don't feel like getting up.
- 16:52I don't want to go anywhere. I don't want to do anything.
- 16:54That is going to be bummed out some days, right?
- 16:58And then I say, Lord, come on, I need power, I need strength, I
- 17:02need your, your love, your ability.
- 17:04You know, you got to get me in gear here because if you don't,
- 17:07I'm not going anywhere, right? And the Lord does that.
- 17:10He's faithful to fill us. He's he's faithful to refresh us
- 17:13and to renew us. And, and we got to be reminded
- 17:16of the fact that we need the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 17:19He's been given to us to give us the strength to live the
- 17:24Christian life and to do our jobs and to do our marriages and
- 17:28do our family life and all the things that we, we deal with in
- 17:31life. Everything has to be done in and
- 17:35through the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 17:38And I'm amazed at how often and we have a tendency to try to do
- 17:42stuff on our own strength. These guys were faced with a
- 17:45challenge. They knew they needed to pray.
- 17:48They got the people praying together with them and then they
- 17:51petitioned God to do what they needed him to do in order for
- 17:55them to be able to speak the word of God with boldness.
- 17:59So then we continue in verse 32. This is when they began to share
- 18:03all things. Now when we study Acts, a lot of
- 18:05churches nowadays, they talk about wanting to get back to the
- 18:08early church. Well, there's certain principles
- 18:10of the early church that are eternal, if you may, the
- 18:14teaching of the word, meeting in the apostles, doctrine,
- 18:16fellowship, prayers and the breaking of bread, which is the
- 18:20Lord's Supper and the Lord adds daily to the church such as
- 18:23those who are being saved. But this instance of what they
- 18:26did here in the beginning stages here was not something that we
- 18:30see carried on in the pastoral epistles.
- 18:32This is a one time experience. Some ideas that some folks had
- 18:36that they thought they could share everything and and
- 18:39breakdown their assets so that everybody would have enough to
- 18:42be able to to take care of everything that was happening.
- 18:45The problem was at this time that that there were so many
- 18:48people in Jerusalem because of Pentecost, that there was a lot
- 18:51of people who had left their homes and their families
- 18:53temporarily and their jobs. And so they were there in this
- 18:57phenomena of this early church, this excitement.
- 18:59So there was a lot of people that needed shelter, they needed
- 19:02food, they needed provision. So they figure, let's pour our
- 19:05assets together so we can take care of all the needs of the
- 19:08people. Well, eventually this thing
- 19:10stopped because first of all, they ran out of money.
- 19:14Everybody needs to work in order to continually fuel the bills,
- 19:18pay the bills that take care of the needs of the of the church,
- 19:20that kind of stuff. So this wasn't written down as a
- 19:24gospel mandate that this is what the church was to do.
- 19:27If you want to know about giving and and participating in
- 19:30community. Second Corinthians chapter 8
- 19:33talks about why we give. We don't give out of compulsion.
- 19:38We give willingly, cheerfully, as God has caused us to purpose
- 19:42in our hearts or God loves a cheerful giver.
- 19:46It wasn't like, you know, bring everything that you own to the
- 19:49Calvary Chapel altar. And we, we, we figure out what
- 19:52we do with it. You know, we take a portion of
- 19:54what it is that God blesses us with.
- 19:56We sow it into his Kingdom. He says, if we sow liberally,
- 19:59we'll reap liberally. If we so sparingly, we'll reap
- 20:02sparingly. So we have this desire in our
- 20:05hearts as the Holy Spirit works in the church to give into the
- 20:08work of the ministry. But anyway, these guys, what
- 20:12they decided to do at this time says the multitude of those who
- 20:15believe we're one heart and one soul.
- 20:18And that's. Critical in a local ministry.
- 20:20You want to have the same heart and the same mind.
- 20:22Neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was
- 20:25his own, but they had all things in common.
- 20:28So when you think about your assets and what God's entrusted
- 20:31you with, they're really His. And He entrusts those things to
- 20:35you to use accordingly, right? Use them for His Kingdom.
- 20:39You use them for your goals, your pleasure.
- 20:41He gives us the opportunity to use what it is He's entrusted us
- 20:45with. But we have to all be good
- 20:46stewards. We're going to give an account
- 20:48God and how we use what it is He trusted us with.
- 20:52But they had this plan to share things in common.
- 20:54And with great power, the apostles gave witness to the
- 20:57resurrection of the Lord Jesus. So the preaching was happening,
- 21:01the Word of God was going out, the people were coming to know
- 21:04Christ, or at least thinking about coming to Him, and great
- 21:07grace was upon them all. So in the beginning stages of
- 21:10the New Testament church, the grace of God was so abundant.
- 21:14The church was so pure. There was so much love and
- 21:17humility and simplicity. They didn't have a lot of
- 21:20complicated things going on back in those days, or there was no
- 21:24such thing as a praise ban. There was no such thing as
- 21:27technology and computers and Wi-Fi and Internet.
- 21:31I mean, we didn't have all that stuff back then.
- 21:33And yet, believe it or not, God still is able to accomplish his
- 21:36will, right? But they didn't even have a
- 21:38building. They were in the streets in
- 21:40those days. They met in the Solomon's
- 21:42portico, borrowed the porch together as an assembly.
- 21:45But basically, ministry was always happening out in the the
- 21:48streets as the word of God was being proclaimed.
- 21:52But great grace is upon them all.
- 21:53And I think one of the important things to remember in the
- 21:56Christian life and in the local church is that you try to keep
- 21:59things as simple as you can, right?
- 22:02That's really important because soon as they become complicated,
- 22:06then we begin to get in the way of the Spirit of God.
- 22:08We begin to quench the Spirit of God, We begin to grieve the
- 22:11Spirit of God. Paul's heart, when he preached,
- 22:14he said the one thing he was most concerned about as a church
- 22:17began to develop was that the minds of the people would be
- 22:21corrupted from the simplicity that's in Christ Jesus.
- 22:25If our minds get complicated about church and ministry and
- 22:29knowing the simplicity of the Bible, Jesus loves me.
- 22:32This I know for or the Bible tells me.
- 22:34So it doesn't get any better than that, right?
- 22:36And then walking in that reality of God's love and experiencing
- 22:40that on a daily basis, that's where it's at, right?
- 22:44Whenever something begins to become a strain or pressure or
- 22:49you know, passionless, then you know, Chuck Smith used to say
- 22:52when something's on life support, in other words, man's
- 22:55trying to keep it going, pull the plug.
- 22:57It's already dead right? Don't try to make something
- 23:01happen that God isn't in. And we all have a tendency at
- 23:05times to do certain things. And lots of times we we begin to
- 23:08do ministries in our lives. And it doesn't mean just because
- 23:11we don't see anything happening right away that God isn't in it.
- 23:14Sometimes God's testing, our perseverance, our dependence on
- 23:18him, our patience are waiting upon the Lord.
- 23:21The Bible says those who wait upon the Lord, right?
- 23:24Waiting on the Lord is a hard thing to do.
- 23:27They shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings
- 23:31like eagles. They shall run and not be weary.
- 23:34They shall walk and not faint. And you may be waiting on the
- 23:37Lord for something in your life to come to pass.
- 23:40Don't get discouraged and don't get downtrodden.
- 23:42Whenever God gives you a vision and a purpose and a plan, keep
- 23:46on keeping on, and in time you'll see the fruit come forth
- 23:50as He blesses what it is. And He's called you to put your
- 23:53hand too. Don't ever give up.
- 23:57Thank you for listening to this edition of Living Waters of
- 24:00Grace. Pastor Clark is teaching us
- 24:02about the book of Acts in this series.
- 24:05Acts is a powerful and unique part of Scripture, not just
- 24:08because it records the spread of the gospel geographically from
- 24:12Jerusalem to the ends of the earth, but also culturally.
- 24:15Acts shows us how the message of Jesus moved beyond its Jewish
- 24:20roots and began to reach the Gentile world.
- 24:23What started with Peter leading a small group in the Upper Room
- 24:26became a global movement with Paul taking the gospel to
- 24:30cities, synagogues, and marketplaces across the Roman
- 24:34Empire. Acts captures this vital
- 24:37transition and reminds us that the good news of Jesus is for
- 24:41all people in every place. May we be inspired to carry that
- 24:46same gospel boldly into our world today.
