- 0:07Bob Joyce Stepfisk on the call at six point thirty Run the River one O
- 0:10five nine via the Yukon Sports Network. Of course, the Varsity Network app.
- 0:14A lot of people use that around the country, and the Varsitynetwork dot
- 0:18Com. You sinkmigame dot com to sink our local broadcasts up with the TV,
- 0:23which a lot of people enjoy doing to hear what the home guys have
- 0:27to say about the home team. We're back with Dan Hurley. Okay,
- 0:30here's my Saint Anthony's story. I went with an MSG crew down there to
- 0:35do a story about Bob Senior, your dad, And the thing I came
- 0:40out of that day with most often was what you just said about no sense
- 0:46of entitlement. Now, you guys are good basketball players, you're here playing
- 0:50with a great program. But he treated those guys like as if they had
- 0:56to earn it every day. And I noticed in watching the player just looking
- 1:00at him, Uh, they were like zoned in on that, and uh,
- 1:04I thought that was one of the keys to his success over all those
- 1:07years at Saint Anthony's. Yeah, I think I think any really good player,
- 1:15great player, or the player that you want and your uh you know,
- 1:19on your team in any type of sports or competitive type of endeavor is
- 1:25uh yeah, they they want to get better and they want to be in
- 1:30an environment, you know, where they're being challenged to improve. Uh.
- 1:36You know, if they improve and continue to get better, obviously their value
- 1:40goes up in terms of the you know, their career and the things they
- 1:44want to also accomplish in terms of you know, your resume. You know,
- 1:49once your career is over as a player, as a coach, and
- 1:53it ends for all of us, Uh, you know, you're you're you're
- 1:56left with what you what you accomplished and uh, you know what you what
- 2:00did you strive for? And I think there's something about being in an environment
- 2:06like ours, and you know there's other great ones in college basketball that where
- 2:12the culture is uh, you know, we never lose because we were not
- 2:15prepared. Uh you know, we never lose because of selfishness or laziness or
- 2:22well you know what, well, we do lose, it's because our number
- 2:24was called on a given night, and you know it's I think that's the
- 2:29type of people that we attract because of the way that we do recruit.
- 2:34Yeah, no doubt, I'm with you one hundred percent on that one.
- 2:37Georgetown on the weekend. Interesting, you kind of great start again. You've
- 2:40gotten off some great starts at Villanova. I'm trying to think of a few
- 2:44games where it was ten to nothing, eleven nothing. This one was a
- 2:47big lead early against the Hoyat team which was struggling some. Well, the
- 2:53first thing impressed me there was George shown average about sixty one hundred people attendance
- 2:58wise on the season. There were over thirteen thousand people at that game.
- 3:01I mean there were a ton of Yukon fans locally from that area in the
- 3:07building. I thought that was tremendous. Yeah, that was great. And
- 3:10I think even even going back to last year when we were really really good
- 3:16going there, just what even their fans too. Obviously there was you know
- 3:23that our numbers swelled, but also you know, I thought that they you
- 3:27know, they had it. They had a good showing, you know,
- 3:29for you know, obviously a game versus the number one team in the country
- 3:32should should really you know, galvanize your fan Britain fan base and bring out
- 3:38local basketball fans. But yeah, you could see ed. You know,
- 3:43obviously, you know it's a real rebuild that he's got, and there's some
- 3:46real challenges, uh, you know, like like their home home court situation
- 3:53that they're gonna you have to have to figure their way through. But I
- 3:59think it helped our p ormance that that there was a pretty good crowd for
- 4:02the game. Yeah. Alex Caraban another great day against Georgetown, set fifty
- 4:06one points in two games. He's gonna be with us on the show in
- 4:10a few moments. Ten for fourteen, four of seven from three. Those
- 4:14are all stats. How about how many times he got backdoor layups in that
- 4:17game? I mean, Donovan Klingon said a career high for six assists,
- 4:21I believe, is that correct? Yes? And and Caravan getting loose for
- 4:27layups. I mean that's not easy. You don't see that that much in
- 4:30college games unless you're watching Yukon. Yeah, so you know that that's I
- 4:34think a byproduct that just kind of, as I like to say, just
- 4:40getting lost, just getting lost in our offense, you know, just keeping
- 4:45the ball moving, you know, cutting player movement, you know ball movement,
- 4:50you know understanding you know for us, you know, we've gone uh
- 4:55you know, we get taken kind of away from some of our sets when
- 4:59people when people switch everything, and you know, I think that we've gotten
- 5:04so much better at playing against switches on ball off ball one through four,
- 5:11one through five. You know, I think that's it's been a kryptonite for
- 5:15us in the past, but now I think we've seen it so much that
- 5:18we're getting a lot better at it. And you could see Donovan as a
- 5:21real weapon as a passer what he's able to do at kind of that high
- 5:27post top of the key area. You have great cutters like Cam and Alex
- 5:30and Stephan is becoming a really good cutter. So I think you get Tristan.
- 5:36I think trying to get Tristan more involved as a as a mover to
- 5:41a lot of what he likes to do is off the dribble creating. But
- 5:45he also could be a very dangerous cutter because we get some smart players.
- 5:49Yeah, Spencer got on the Honor Roll this year this week in the Big
- 5:53East. Fifteen points, five months, five assists. You know, plays
- 5:56a complete game most nights, fifty six percent from the field the two games
- 6:00from three. But every time people ask me about him, I said,
- 6:04do you ever see how many rebounds this guy gets. You ever see how
- 6:08many assists his assists the turnover ratio. I mean, those numbers to me
- 6:12are impressive. Yeah, it's great to see the ball go in the basket
- 6:15from three, but wow, I mean he is an excellent passer and all
- 6:18around player. Yeah, I mean he's a he's a really good all around
- 6:21player and uh, you know, defensively to just you know, it's a
- 6:27guy that's got some you know, capability to know to to steal the ball
- 6:31and get us some easy opportunities, you know, and obviously you see the
- 6:35skill level as an all around guard. But I would say still think the
- 6:43you know, the thing about his competitiveness and the fire he plays with and
- 6:47the way he shows up every day. He never He's a lot like me
- 6:54in a sense. Uh. And there's a couple others like you know,
- 6:57it's a Caravan two and a domin Andre Hawk was this too, where we're
- 7:02just like such insane competitors that love basketball so much that you know, it
- 7:11just does so much for the for the character, the competitive character of the
- 7:15team. Yeah. Yeah, that's big. It's no doubt about it.
- 7:18Your rookie Stephan Castle I should be calling him a freshman, but it's my
- 7:23NBA background. He's a rookie to me, and he is a seventh time
- 7:27he's won the Freshman of the Week award in the league. That's the most
- 7:30ever by a Yukon player. Shot fifty nine percent this week, eleven points
- 7:34a game. I mean, he does so many things. We've talked about
- 7:38his defense. We talked about his rebounding, but I just heard you say
- 7:41moving without the ball for him, he's starting to pick that up too.
- 7:44Boy, what a weapon that could be. Yeah, I mean, he
- 7:48just pick up on some things in some ways we used Andre in terms of
- 7:54his cutting and getting on the baseline, getting in the corners and making the
- 7:58shop forty five cuts whatever, you know, and then that puts him in
- 8:01position to get on the offensive glass, where he's where he's a lot to
- 8:05deal with. So you know, he's what he's done is impressive, and
- 8:09I think it's more impressive because there's hardly any freshman out there in college these
- 8:15days with the COVID year and in the portal, you know, coaches don't
- 8:20have to play freshmen, so they really aren't. Yeah, so he's never
- 8:24really playing against freshmen. He's generally playing against really old players and helping us,
- 8:30you know, win a lot of games. One final thing for you.
- 8:33A friend of mine who's a high school coach in Connecticut sent me a
- 8:35text after the Georgetown game. He's said, the best part of the game
- 8:39the heart I liked the most. With the team up twenty six, Dan
- 8:43called a timeout and was yelling at everybody, like three of the guys,
- 8:48and I said, yeah, that's this coach does not tolerate certain things.
- 8:52What happened there when you got a little upset and you got into some guys
- 8:56and you know, the game was kind of afford on conclusion at that point.
- 9:01Yeah, I mean, we're we're getting to the point here soon where
- 9:03uh, you know, lose, you know, lose the next game and
- 9:09you know, and season over. You know that's coming up soon here,
- 9:13Uh, both Big East season over and then potentially you know, and then
- 9:16career over with the you know, at the n c ub A tournament.
- 9:20So you know, just all the behaviors, the habits, the standards.
- 9:26You know, if you if you can't have moments of weakness where regardless of
- 9:33the score, time, situation, where you where you where you where everything
- 9:39that we've trained for go out the window and uh uh and we we always
- 9:45have to uh perform at the level of our training, regardless of time score.
- 9:52Because if that, if that, if that becomes a habit where we
- 9:54start to carry ourselves that way, we become very vulnerable. This is not
- 9:58the jug or our team that you know that that we get portrayed to be,
- 10:03like we have to be absolutely on the point offense, defense, ball
- 10:07movement, rebounding, scouting, unselfishness, like we can't be off a tick.
- 10:11This isn't you know that, This isn't a team with like ten lottery
- 10:13picks. You know, things will get away from us quickly if we get
- 10:18away from our identity. I thought we got away from our identity and I
- 10:20ripped the boys and I'll rip them again. I ripped them today a bunch.
- 10:26That's that's the standard. I do think that the players, you know
- 10:33that they I'm tough on them, but I think they know how important it
- 10:37is for me to keep the standard high. Yeah. No, that's that's
- 10:41there's no doubt about it. Listen, you don't have Luel Cinder there,
- 10:45you don't have Bill Walton. You're not winning seventy five games in a row
- 10:48yet like John Wooden did. But I think that's a great way to look
- 10:52at it. I really do. We're not rolling the balls out, you
- 10:54know, just like just beating people off of just pure talent. Like we
- 10:58have a very systematic approach to what we're doing on both ends of the court.
- 11:03And yeah, and we become vulnerable just like everyone else, you know,
- 11:07if we get away from what we do. Yep, yep, Okay,
- 11:11coach, We appreciate you, Thank you very much. You'll see in
- 11:15Chicago for DePaul. See you all Right's Dan Hurley coming up. Alex Caravan
- 11:20joins us as we continue on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show from Learfield
