Latest / Guy Football Focus with Guy Haberman / Myles Garrett Joins The NFC West Gauntlet - TRADE REACTION
Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's interesting about the Miles Garretrade is when it got reported by Shefter.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: All the texts I got asked could the Niners have done this deal.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: From buddies, their text threads are blowing up, your text threads are blowing up.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: A guy in the league text to me and said, do you think that I just made it off for my answers?
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't, like, not like this real offer, right?
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: The report was the Rams hounded the Browns because Miles Garret's a player worth hounding the Browns for and what surprised me in the last several hours reading some of the stories,
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: is these like statistical comparisons.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: Look at the pressures for Jared verse.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: Look at the pressures from Miles Garrett.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's a fraction of the player, but a large fraction, no, no, no, no, no.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the fine trade, I guess, for the Browns, it's a, if you're a team that is never going to actually compete,
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: Then it's a fine trade and you need ammunition for your next quarterback because a Kiely Smith and Tim Couch always need more company.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: Although maybe just maybe just maybe if they can get archmaning, the curse will finally be broken, archmaning believer here.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I get why you do the deal, but of course,
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: To me, of course, you do this deal if you're the Rams.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Similar situation, the 49ers were last you're just in the sense that they're hosting the Super Bowl.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: They've already gotten one.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: They want to go for another.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_00]: If you're going to pay Matthew Stafford, then you might as well try to win a championship with them.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's what he's there for.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like if you do it this year, this would be the year that he retires.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: But I watch McVay on bus and with the boys that I saw somebody say, well, is McVay and Stafford going to retire?
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think that McVay thing.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: You can never rule out because there's so much money potentially coming as an analyst, although he joked when you don't come off a super bowl when there's less money.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I watch his bus in interview.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: I've watched him talk a ton.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think the guy that almost broke or the did break and walk away from coaching is he called a quitting.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: He said, let's be honest, I almost quit.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's not what this is from McVay.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is just an opportunity to get a generational player.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the best nine quarterback in the league.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the best player in the league.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_00]: At 30 31 years old he'll be 31 this year.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_00]: He is a very durable guy.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: The only saving grace is that time does pass and 10 years or now he'll be 40 and this nightmare will be over.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: But for now he's 30 going into the air and he's an excellent player.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: And by the way, the ram's last
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: in no blitz pressure rate.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: And we saw what Seattle, like, the key to their whole thing and their ability to get pressure with four and the ability to get pressure with four is so critical when you're playing an offense that has sort of interchangeable parts, which the 49ers do.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't, you know, they didn't make this move for the 49ers, they think they're already better.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: But they are the bet to me, they're the favor of the NFC, West, the favor of the NFC.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: right, not just because of Miles Garrett.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: Miles Garrett makes the other things they did better and the other things they did now look better because they got Miles Garrett specifically signing Jalen Watson trading for Trent McDuffie and paying Trent McDuffie a bunch of money.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: So all of those things together let you rush for still cover, you know, I mean,
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: This would be like, you just think of what I said, trying to make stuff, you think of one thing.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: And Brandon and I, you think of one thing.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: Brandon and I, you could, as of 325 p.m. Pacific on June 1, still in the lives.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: AJ Brown, not on the Eagles.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: Miles Garrett, not on the Browns.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: Brandon and I, you could still on the 49ers.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: Could have been a Brown.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: Brandon and I, you could once could have been a Brown.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: So back to the question, though, because the 49ers have done this deal.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they could have done this deal because they don't have a Jared verse, unless, well, not unless.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: They are hoping in two years, in a year after this season, healthy, year two, Michael Williams, different type of player, but could he be the type of player that other teams lost after?
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't, like I couldn't see that on his trading, Michael Williams, if he became as productive a two-time, if you weren't the pro-bullet's year, I don't see it.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_00]: They'll be happy that he's their guy.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: He'll be their best young defensive linemen.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but so you have to replace verse with what is verse worth in this trade, a first.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: And a third, I mean, if Michael Parsons is two ones and Kenny Clark, then Miles Garrett has to be three ones.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: right in some variation.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: They got a 2027 first, a 2028 second, a 2029 third, and Jared Verr.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: So if you say he's worth a first in a second, or first in a third, then you call it two ones.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_00]: To me, if you told me that Miles Gary, I traded, I would've thought it was for more.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_00]: So from that standpoint, I think alone, it's clearly a lot, but you're doing it for Miles Gary.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: This is a team that I saw,
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Feel the AIDS maybe?
- 5:13[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody posted all their first round picks in the last whatever it is decade.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's golf, it's a verse.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: And it's Ty Simpson.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: Who by the way, now that looks a little less crazy.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_00]: I was fine with it.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: You go watch the draft night stuff.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: I was good with them drafting Tyson's and I understood it.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: How often you need to get this high.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: If you like the player, if you like the guy, if you like the quarterback, you're not going to be drafting at 15 any time soon.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: So take them.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now, we see again, they're like, that's what we think you just saw what we think of first round picks.
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: So we just traded two Tyson's or something
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: and it makes even more sense in that regard.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: So for the 49ers, what would that have been?
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: I would have been two ones, a two and two threes, you know, or two ones, two twos and a three, or three ones and a three.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Now I know the Rams have had a lot of success without first drum picks.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners have had a lot of success without they haven't, you know, lacked first drum picks in the way the Rams have, but they've lacked first drum picks.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: The trade-lanc thing was three ones, but really effectively two ones, right?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: They flip three in 12, but then traded first round picks in the next two years, and still were really good.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, the kniter's for all of the, and it's right, like, the trade-lanc trade created a domino effect that affected their depth in a significant way.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: I guess, I mean, assuming they would have nailed those picks,
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: Um, which is what you assume you do assume that when you trade first like you have to assume like okay we're giving up a first that's a good pick.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: We should get a good player even if especially if there's two of them if there's three of them we should get one good player out of those three really good player start player.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: Um,
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: But they've had a lot of success without him, which is the argument to do it.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if you're having the debate in John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, everybody's around the table, you go, should we trade two ones, two twos and the three from Al's Garrett?
- 7:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like, the trail-length thing, we're finally recovering from that.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, recovering.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: I went to the Super Bowl twice.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: So, I mean, I guess one was before.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: But I went to the Super Bowl and competed.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: go to the, like, almost with the one seed last year.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it was an over achievement, but like the Niners are an example of why you do, everyone uses them as the example, and I think even they probably would say like the trail last thing, we'd like to not repeat that mistake.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: But you use them as the example of like, see, this is why you don't do it.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: And the rams are go, I don't know, look at the niders.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't have the two ones for back to back years.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: They still put a pretty good team together.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: Isn't that the reason you do do it?
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: First round picks are really hard to hit on.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see what happens with Ricky Purcell.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: They're Jean Sturbling, AJ Brown got straight up for her first.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: Which 100% you run to do that deal if you're silly.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can't have run that deal if you're New England.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: They get two or three years out of him as a 1,000 yard receiver, huge win for New England.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: This is good or bad for the 49ers, the rest of the NFC.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Well, on one hand, AJ Brown's really good player.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: On the other hand, major part of what appeared to be Eagles dysfunction on offense.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe the Eagles are getting their minds right, which that's not great.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: Emphasis is still going to be getting the ball out quick.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Can he win quick off the line of scrimmage for the 49ers against Trent McDuffer, you're J.L.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: and Watson, Ricky Pearson.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: Can he get open right away?
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's a great opportunity to throw the ball to the running back.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: Can you run him back, sketch?
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: McAfrican, there's been a lot of, well, I woke up that I think you don't, they'll do a K-lon black video.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of K-lon black hype.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of K-lon black hype.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: I was there at practice last week.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: I saw him catch the same passes that everybody else saw.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: I like him, Kyle Shanahan, after practice was asked about it, said, you know, Bay, like you're in between the lines, said, yeah, we made Elijah Mitchell, good receiver.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: We made JP Mason, good receiver, which means you catch like 14 balls, maybe you catch one a game, that when we talk about like a good running back receiver or not, they're my Christian, we're talking about like 15 to 20 catches.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: Which would be great.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: That would be great.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: So I said it to say, it's not that it's a low bar, but you know, we're not talking about 30 balls here, right?
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: If K-Lon Black catches 14 balls, you be like, wow.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just telling you right now, that's what that means.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like the third most important number, one, he's got to run the football, which is what Kyle said.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, well, you know, we got him, because we think he'd run the ball.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought back to something Shannon said, about Jacob County, his book, he was like, Jordan,
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: Watkins, which one would I be interested about both?
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, hey, it's kind of looks good.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, long way to go.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: It turned out to be right.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it kind of felt a little bit like that's what we were saying about K-Long Black.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: But they like him clearly.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: I texted my buddies, my people.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: Is some of you know, big Indiana Hoosier guy here, didn't go there, but big Indiana love the Indiana Hoosiers.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: I've had some great moments in Bloomington the last couple of years.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_00]: They agreed what you know, what we all know by now, right?
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: They felt like he was a better past catcher than they utilized because they just had other things to do on offense.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: But they do think he can be a good past protector.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's a solid past protector.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: He was there, smart enough to do it.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: But that's really what's going to get him on the field.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: Folks, it's past pro.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's where the pre-season's really going to matter.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: Not this Calam black catch three balls.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_00]: Can he run, can he protect the ball in his arms and can he protect the quarterback with the ball?
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: If he does those three things, then he will earn the chance to catch like nine to 14 balls this year.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's my, and that's like that's, that's, I'm not denigrating.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's a win.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_00]: If you told me you came on black, you don't tell me other stats.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: You just told me he's got 13 catches.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'd go, you know what?
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: I've been on the field of fair amount and I bet you can be trusted to carry the football protect the anti-beddy can pass protect.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Against Miles Garrett, like that's what we're talking about now.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: Miles Garrett, one more reason for Christian McCaffrey, not to come off the field.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_00]: The guy Jared versus good, but this guy, Jeremy Fowler, it's on another level.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Jeremy Fowler.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: I thought this was interesting in all of the hub of, I don't know if it's flying on the radar, but Rams approach is fascinating, taking big swings instead of paying young stars.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: Source to say L.A. is giving early impressions, it won't extend Puka Nakuha.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's the, you know, Byron Young Kobe Turner, but Puka Nakuha, which, you know, I had to double check this, like was this a real Jeremy Fowler tweet, yes it was?
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: The Puka thing's been weird.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: It happened sometimes with receivers, things get weird.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: But that's a major monitor.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: Here's the other thing, how much Miles Garrett has?
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see the Miles Garrett contract.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: The one thing we know about these past-wester contracts is now maybe he holds out in a year or two and wants more money, whatever.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: But,
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, in 20, the capets are pretty good.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, so he's got five years left on the steel.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: That it's a trait, like, let's say you wanted, let's say you won the Super Bowl and Matthew Stafford retired.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't think they would then turn around and rebuild.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think they'd be like perfect.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: Ty Simpson has trimming stuff, he and Jayla want and we got Miles Garrett on this defense and we're gonna have a good defense and the quarterback is just gonna,
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: be solid.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_00]: All we need is him to Jimmy Garoppolo it, not kidding.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Trigger warning.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: Guess I've just just to say that before.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: But in theory, instead of paying Jared verse in two years, when the cost of the past verse will be higher because her moves, everything's higher, they could just turn around trade melts, Garrett.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: But they could, like he's more tradable.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: That's the crate, I guess that's the point, in a way, in a way.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't see the latter's trading, what I think effectively would have been like two-one, two-two or three-one's for him, even though that would have been a reasonable price.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: They're definitely going, we can't do that right now.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: We're banking, we just drafted my call, the Ramello height thing,
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it feels irresponsible to even say his name in the context of this conversation.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: There is so much to prove.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's not even about, but I do think it's a continuation of you got Mike McDonald who has Kyle Shanahan's number, right, 10 points.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's what the knives have averaged, or what Kyle's average in four games against Mike McDonald's defense.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: And now LA's defense gets better.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: And they had already gotten better with their
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: So, just a fascinating, 2026 for Shanahan and Birdie.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: And the whole thing, and past protection, and Christian, McAfrey, and Pearsol, and Kittle, and Mike Evans, and like they are getting tested.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: They are getting tested.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: And they will be the, the weak one thing.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: On one hand, you're mad.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's actually, it seems like on both hands they're mad that they're not playing the ramps in LA, that they're going to Australia.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: I have not seen the ramps say what they're going to do in terms of arrival.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: The Niners are going to go a week early.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the ramps will be there a week early, but that's going to be.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: a long flight home for somebody, not just because you hate to lose week one, but because the the implications and the division, it's the difference maybe between the one seed and a wild card, I don't know if it's the difference if you beat the team you're supposed to be at the difference between one seed and like not make it a playoffs, but it's the difference between one seed and a wild card for sure.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: comes down to each one of these games.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I think part of what's being lost in the nine of the travel thing is that the mileage is what gets discussed.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: But it's, I think really, as much about the hours away from home, like the flight to Australia, the flight back, I will do, it's significant.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: We'll do it.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see, I don't know.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm debating, like, do I do it?
- 16:28[SPEAKER_00]: Can I do a cultural book in one second?
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone want to get back?
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'd be wiped out, like get, well, I make myself sick, but it's a week away.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the part that stood out to me, which I didn't say that last week, leaving the Wednesday, before it's like a nine-day trip.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: And if they decide, and they haven't decided yet, but if they decide to go from Dallas to Colorado Springs to Mexico City, instead of Dallas back home, off to Mexico City, or Dallas back home, Colorado Springs, Mexico City.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's another nine-day trip.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of time.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of time away from screaming babies.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: All right, on that note, Niners do have some media stuff.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_00]: Niners have coaches, I'll be there.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_00]: Levi Stadium on Tuesday.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: Their coaches are going to be available to chat in formal chats.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: And then Wednesday practice.
