- 0:03Speaker 1: Welcome to Deeply Well. This show is a soft place
- 0:06Speaker 1: to land on your journey, a space where we explore
- 0:10Speaker 1: what it truly means to live well from the inside out.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Not perfectly, but honestly. This is Deeply Well. Welcome back
- 0:21Speaker 1: to Deeply Well. I'm Debbie Brown. Today, I am joined
- 0:25Speaker 1: by my friend, Gia Peppers. Gia is an award-winning journalist,
- 0:30Speaker 1: television host, podcaster, and and the founder of.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Creatives of Faith.
- 0:35Speaker 1: With more than a decade in entertainment journalism, Gia has
- 0:38Speaker 1: interviewed some of the most recognizable and important voices in culture,
- 0:42Speaker 1: from Pharrell and Kobe Bryant to Kelly Rowland and Danielle Brooks.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Across her work, she creates space for people to share
- 0:50Speaker 1: the fullness of their stories, including the experiences that have
- 0:54Speaker 1: challenged them, that have changed them, and that have really
- 0:57Speaker 1: deeply helped them grow. As host and co-executive producer of
- 1:01Speaker 1: the NAACP Image Award-nominated More Than That with Gia Peppers,
- 1:06Speaker 1: she brings audiences conversations that expand what's possible in business,
- 1:12Speaker 1: financial well-being, and mental health. Through her Healed Girl Era podcast,
- 1:17Speaker 1: Gia invites guests to share lessons from their most transformational seasons,
- 1:22Speaker 1: building a community where people can heal out loud and
- 1:25Speaker 1: feel less alone. And through creatives of faith, She brings
- 1:29Speaker 1: together creatives who want to nurture their gifts while staying
- 1:33Speaker 1: connected to God and their purpose. Today, we are making
- 1:37Speaker 1: room for the woman behind those powerful conversations, exploring her
- 1:41Speaker 1: own relationship with faith, with healing, with creativity, and with becoming. Gia,
- 1:47Speaker 1: you spend so much of your life holding powerful space
- 1:51Speaker 1: for others in their stories. And today, I'm really excited
- 1:55Speaker 1: to hold that space for you and yours. Welcome to
- 1:58Speaker 1: Deeply Well.
- 1:59Speaker 3: What in the world? Debbie, please don't make me cry.
- 2:02Speaker 3: You just got here two seconds ago. Thank you. I
- 2:05Speaker 3: need that bio. Who wrote that? You wrote that? Who
- 2:07Speaker 3: wrote that, y'all? I'm going to take that. Okay, just
- 2:09Speaker 3: so y'all know.
- 2:09Speaker 1: It's coming with me. We will send it. My God.
- 2:12Speaker 3: That was beautiful. Thank you. No one has ever done
- 2:15Speaker 3: that for me. I love you. What? Well, put it
- 2:18Speaker 3: in that way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's interesting to hear
- 2:21Speaker 3: it all together. It's very hard to like, because, you know,
- 2:24Speaker 3: we're in it.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 3: We're in it. We're just building it. We're just trying
- 2:28Speaker 3: to be obedient. We're just trying to make something out
- 2:31Speaker 3: of this life we've been given.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 3: It's like a privilege to live this. And we want
- 2:35Speaker 3: to serve folks. And like, you know, it's hard. It's
- 2:37Speaker 3: hard work. So to hear it.
- 2:39Speaker 2: It's hard work.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Like, it's like, what? Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:42Speaker 4: Okay, girl.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And to see the clear through lines.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 2:46Speaker 1: To really behold the through lines of a real, full,
- 2:51Speaker 1: purposeful career. Yes. I think that is a lost art
- 2:55Speaker 1: and a lost piece that I personally just revere and
- 3:00Speaker 1: love to bring to light on this show because it's like,
- 3:03Speaker 1: in this culture, in this culture of virality, this culture
- 3:07Speaker 1: of clips, this culture of validation and performance and, and
- 3:13Speaker 1: what has turned into sometimes a visibility that predates experience.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It's so important to let people know the other archetypes
- 3:26Speaker 1: that exist and the way like work actually moves your
- 3:30Speaker 1: life forward over a long span of time. You know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I think that the generations that came in under me,
- 3:38Speaker 1: under us, um, you know, coming into this quote unquote
- 3:44Speaker 1: modern age of technology, that piece has been missing. And
- 3:50Speaker 1: I think people, some people will wake up and not
- 3:54Speaker 1: realize how detrimental that missing piece may actually be to
- 3:59Speaker 1: the fullness of like a work that extends through your life.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:03Speaker 3: And I feel like One, I'm so honored to be
- 4:06Speaker 3: back on Deeply Well. This is one of the best
- 4:08Speaker 3: shows out in the world, and especially in the pod-averse,
- 4:13Speaker 3: because of how you carry it, because of how you
- 4:16Speaker 3: are truly just such a vessel for wellness, but also
- 4:20Speaker 3: the internal conversations we have with ourselves, but articulating those
- 4:25Speaker 3: feelings and allowing us to feel those feelings and take
- 4:29Speaker 3: that and sit with ourselves and transmute it and come
- 4:32Speaker 3: together and figure it out but then we come back
- 4:34Speaker 3: here and it's like oh but it's still it's still
- 4:37Speaker 3: me i still get to be held here and i
- 4:39Speaker 3: think you do a beautiful job of that so i'm
- 4:40Speaker 3: so happy to be back thank you literally i feel
- 4:43Speaker 3: like i had this song last time too so hey
- 4:46Speaker 3: you did it i feel like i always wear.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It it's like i love it we're like very pink
- 4:50Speaker 1: and green right now and like on the set.
- 4:52Speaker 3: I mean i'm like but i was like what don't
- 4:55Speaker 3: i have to iron and what is cute amen today
- 4:59Speaker 3: in LA. It's like getting hot.
- 5:00Speaker 2: And yesterday was freezing.
- 5:01Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying. I'm like, here we go.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And the day before that was raining. And the week
- 5:05Speaker 1: before that was 110 degrees.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Why are we getting the totality of global.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Warming in Los Angeles?
- 5:10Speaker 3: I'd really rather opt out. But I'm just like, meanwhile,
- 5:15Speaker 3: we got things to build and do and become, even
- 5:18Speaker 3: though the world is literally splitting before our eyes. And
- 5:24Speaker 3: I feel like it's splitting open now. At first, I
- 5:26Speaker 3: think it was scary to watch the split. But now
- 5:28Speaker 3: I think we're seeing things that we were ignoring for
- 5:31Speaker 3: so long just because we were so comfortable. And now
- 5:33Speaker 3: nobody's comfortable. Not even the people that might have thought
- 5:37Speaker 3: they would be comfortable by, you know, voting for somebody
- 5:40Speaker 3: that was aligned with them. Nobody's comfortable.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Nobody's comfortable.
- 5:44Speaker 3: We're not able to look away. We were talking about flights.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah, we're all churning.
- 5:48Speaker 3: This morning, I went to go book a flight because
- 5:51Speaker 3: I'm really traveling back and forth between D.C. and L.A.
- 5:53Speaker 3: all the time.
- 5:54Speaker 4: Wow.
- 5:54Speaker 3: And, yeah.
- 5:55Speaker 1: That's intense travel. It is.
- 5:57Speaker 3: It's like because I'm bi-coastal. Like, I'm in L.A., but
- 6:00Speaker 3: I'm mostly in D.C. I want to build a life there.
- 6:02Speaker 3: My boyfriend's there.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Got that man's out there, baby.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I'm trying to be married.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Because I'm in the private friends part of your story,
- 6:09Speaker 1: so I've been seeing the things.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I'm trying to be just as happy in my personal life.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 3: As I've been in my career, and I think especially
- 6:19Speaker 3: coming up when we did, you had to fully go
- 6:23Speaker 3: hard at your career. And it was like, man, we'll
- 6:26Speaker 3: come later.
- 6:27Speaker 2: That was the only choice.
- 6:28Speaker 3: That was the only choice.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 3: And then later comes, and I'm like... Now, how am
- 6:34Speaker 3: I supposed to wait? So I was really grateful for
- 6:38Speaker 3: the last couple of years because there were so many
- 6:40Speaker 3: things that happened that made me realize like, oh, this
- 6:43Speaker 3: is life now.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Like there is no later. Yeah. You're in it. What
- 6:48Speaker 3: are you going to do? Do you want to date?
- 6:50Speaker 3: And Yvonne Orji was like, you need to start putting
- 6:52Speaker 3: your cities, wherever you're traveling, because you travel so much,
- 6:55Speaker 3: into your hinge and wherever you're at so you can
- 6:58Speaker 3: go on a couple of dates. And so I was
- 7:00Speaker 3: home a couple of years ago. And I was chilling.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I love Yvonne.
- 7:03Speaker 2: She is so good.
- 7:06Speaker 1: She's so good for pulling you in those like tiny
- 7:08Speaker 1: detail ways. Yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 3: And I was like, I, I don't know how to date.
- 7:13Speaker 3: And she was like, just try to go on a
- 7:14Speaker 3: couple of dates. And I went on a couple of
- 7:16Speaker 3: dates that week. I was the week before I was
- 7:18Speaker 3: turning 34 and he was the last date and we
- 7:20Speaker 3: ain't stopped swogging since. So he's amazing. Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Okay. I had a different origin. I was going to
- 7:29Speaker 1: start with, but let's start with love. Someone that works
- 7:33Speaker 1: so hard, someone that lives and works with purpose. Tell
- 7:37Speaker 1: me about how it feels and the differences of being
- 7:41Speaker 1: able to do your work while being loved.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Come on in here. Wow. All right. We're going to
- 7:48Speaker 3: go there. I wouldn't have started Creatives of Faith had
- 7:53Speaker 3: I not had my boyfriend.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Wow.
- 7:57Speaker 3: I was like, you know what? You understand this. When
- 8:01Speaker 3: the industry you work in doesn't quite get you, you
- 8:05Speaker 3: start to wear it. So you start to be like, well,
- 8:09Speaker 3: they don't think I'm good, so nobody thinks I'm good.
- 8:12Speaker 3: They don't see me doing anything, so nobody sees me
- 8:15Speaker 3: doing anything. I can't get on this show, so I'm
- 8:18Speaker 3: not supposed to be on shows. I can't gather people.
- 8:22Speaker 3: My numbers don't meet. Everything that was a no, that
- 8:26Speaker 3: was showing on the opportunities that I was getting and
- 8:28Speaker 3: the ceilings I was meeting, I was like, okay, so
- 8:31Speaker 3: no one is going to care. It was him who
- 8:37Speaker 3: was like, man, do you know who you are? Do
- 8:40Speaker 3: you know how much you mean to people? I've been
- 8:43Speaker 3: by your side for the last year and I see
- 8:45Speaker 3: how people light up when you enter a room and
- 8:48Speaker 3: I see how you can, can literally transform an environment
- 8:53Speaker 3: by speaking and you, you are hiding because you're a
- 8:57Speaker 3: little hurt by what this industry told you, but there's
- 9:00Speaker 3: people waiting for you. Like there's really people waiting for
- 9:03Speaker 3: you really can do it. And like, it took months
- 9:06Speaker 3: of me being like, Okay, sir. Sure. Ain't nobody coming
- 9:10Speaker 3: to that. If I do that, nobody's coming. Like if
- 9:11Speaker 3: I started, cause, cause to be fair and to be honest,
- 9:14Speaker 3: healed girl era did not go where I thought I
- 9:17Speaker 3: would have wanted it to go. Like views wise and
- 9:20Speaker 3: all that stuff. Like when you're selling and pitching, you
- 9:21Speaker 3: know how it goes. Like, it's like, Hey, there's like
- 9:24Speaker 3: Oprah and Michelle Obama are podcasters who need sponsorship. Like
- 9:28Speaker 3: when we're talking about the playing field right now, it's like, okay.
- 9:33Speaker 3: You know what that you start to wear it. Like
- 9:36Speaker 3: the things that didn't quite go how you wanted to go,
- 9:38Speaker 3: even though you put your all into it. So I
- 9:41Speaker 3: took a step back from just creating all types of things.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And I literally had to like, just chill on everything
- 9:47Speaker 3: output and one, just fall in love. But to the
- 9:50Speaker 3: mirror that he was able to hold up to me
- 9:52Speaker 3: that I think I, I blurred my own mirror. He
- 9:56Speaker 3: was able to help me like little by little, just
- 9:59Speaker 3: see some different things. And so had I not met him,
- 10:04Speaker 3: I'm not sure there would be a creatives of faith.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I'm not sure I would be showing up in the
- 10:08Speaker 3: way that I show up now. Um, because he's able
- 10:11Speaker 3: to help me see that like, Just because one faction
- 10:15Speaker 3: of your life didn't work out doesn't mean there's a
- 10:18Speaker 3: million other things that you shouldn't be doing that you're
- 10:20Speaker 3: literally called to be doing. And it's been a beautiful journey.
- 10:27Speaker 3: God gave me the idea for Creatives of Faith six
- 10:29Speaker 3: years ago, and I ran from it every step of
- 10:32Speaker 3: the way. And it had to be the perfect storm,
- 10:34Speaker 3: and he had to be the perfect person to literally
- 10:37Speaker 3: hold my hand and be like, you can do this.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Promise you. Like someone who can see you up close. no,
- 10:42Speaker 3: no rah-rah, none of that, like, because, you know, we
- 10:45Speaker 3: put on for our friends, we put on for our parents,
- 10:47Speaker 3: and eventually you around your old man so much that, like,
- 10:50Speaker 3: the mask falls, and next thing you know, you crying,
- 10:54Speaker 3: talking about, you know, whatever, like, we could have been
- 10:56Speaker 3: talking about popcorn, being good at a movie, and the
- 10:59Speaker 3: next thing you know, I end up in tears, because,
- 11:01Speaker 3: you know, something is freeing, like, it's free, I don't
- 11:04Speaker 3: have to convince you, and that was a, that space
- 11:08Speaker 3: that he created for me inside of, like, our growing
- 11:11Speaker 3: and getting to know each other has helped me tremendously. Girl.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 11:17Speaker 2: He's good.
- 11:18Speaker 1: He's a good guy. Two places I want to go
- 11:20Speaker 1: with what you're talking about. I hope my brain lets
- 11:22Speaker 1: me get both out. The first thing that I want
- 11:27Speaker 1: to say about what you're saying that is so interesting
- 11:31Speaker 1: to me is like for most of us, the issue,
- 11:35Speaker 1: like the thing that we can't break through is just
- 11:39Speaker 1: simply not getting accurate feedback about who we are from
- 11:45Speaker 1: the mirrors that are around us, right? And like, you
- 11:48Speaker 1: can derail your whole life and trajectory from not getting
- 11:52Speaker 1: accurate feedback.
- 11:52Speaker 3: We've seen it. We see it all the time in Hollywood.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Like Hollywood, we see it.
- 11:57Speaker 1: In families, in Hollywood, in anything, anywhere you are, if
- 12:02Speaker 1: you're surrounded by people that aren't giving you honest, clear
- 12:06Speaker 1: feedback about who and what you are or withholding the
- 12:10Speaker 1: good feedback about you intentionally or because they don't have capacity,
- 12:15Speaker 1: you miss a whole way of knowing who you are
- 12:18Speaker 1: and a whole way of developing self-trust, confidence. Or you
- 12:23Speaker 1: have to fight to get that, which was kind of
- 12:25Speaker 1: my story, for yourself if you don't feel that other places.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And also, so many people right now are getting incorrect
- 12:36Speaker 1: feedback that they are great, that what they're doing is
- 12:41Speaker 1: amazing or this or revolutionary or visionary. Like they're getting
- 12:45Speaker 1: the wrong feedback because often no, it isn't. Or you're
- 12:48Speaker 1: moving through ego or that person is celebrating you because
- 12:53Speaker 1: they actually have a weird relationship with visibility. So they're
- 12:57Speaker 1: obsessed with your visibility and think that that makes you great.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And they're not actually looking at or giving you feedback
- 13:04Speaker 1: about the work or the longevity of your legacy and gifts.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And like, that is so fascinating to me. It's like,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and you know, like in this space, we've seen it
- 13:13Speaker 1: so many there we have seen, I'm saying this with
- 13:17Speaker 1: no judgment whatsoever. We've just seen so many come and
- 13:22Speaker 1: go in the industry as a whole. Cause that's how
- 13:25Speaker 1: the industry operates, right? It's trend-based it's, focused on highlighting
- 13:30Speaker 1: and lifting up whatever the algorithm catches wind of even
- 13:34Speaker 1: prior to the algorithm. Exactly.
- 13:35Speaker 3: That's so true.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Whatever any random group of people are talking about, you know,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and very rarely does that equate truth. Does that equate quality?
- 13:45Speaker 1: Does that equate longevity? You know?
- 13:47Speaker 2: And so it's like, we.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Always have to refocus to look at ourselves through a
- 13:52Speaker 1: clear lens because it's constantly being clouded by everything.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:57Speaker 3: It's so true. That's why like, artists like Lauryn Hill
- 14:01Speaker 3: and Jill Scott and Erykah Badu and D'Angelo, may he
- 14:05Speaker 3: rest in peace, all the folks that actually had the talent,
- 14:09Speaker 3: the substance, something to say, and then still were able
- 14:12Speaker 3: to make it, able to have these albums that changed
- 14:17Speaker 3: the world. the industry is not letting that through no more.
- 14:20Speaker 3: We don't even have the infrastructure, much less the ability
- 14:26Speaker 3: to let, whoever did Neo Soul and made that term up,
- 14:30Speaker 3: we thank you, because that was the last iteration to
- 14:34Speaker 3: me of music with substance actually making a mainstream splash.
- 14:39Speaker 3: We live in times where the people with something to
- 14:43Speaker 3: say don't catch the algorithm's attention, and the people with
- 14:46Speaker 3: nothing to say Are able to move culture in a
- 14:50Speaker 3: way that is targeted.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Because there are people that own these platforms.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:58Speaker 3: And we, I think we see it now that like
- 15:01Speaker 3: all of our things are being co-opted.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 3: And there are certain messages that are making it through
- 15:05Speaker 3: to us and making us believe that we can't love
- 15:07Speaker 3: each other. We can't support each other. We can't show
- 15:09Speaker 3: up for each other.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:10Speaker 3: But then when you get offline and you talk to people,
- 15:12Speaker 3: you're like, wait, I actually do need community. Are you?
- 15:15Speaker 3: Are you, me, me, you? And the next thing you know,
- 15:17Speaker 3: they bring two people and you bring two people and
- 15:20Speaker 3: y'all actually want good for not only yourselves, but the world.
- 15:23Speaker 3: It's like, we have to watch where we're plugged into
- 15:26Speaker 3: so much because now these spaces are not even, I
- 15:29Speaker 3: feel like it used to be a free for all.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Now it's like, no, this is what you're going to
- 15:33Speaker 3: care about. Your timeline. I follow like what? 5,000 people.
- 15:38Speaker 3: I see maybe a hundred. Like they're telling us. what
- 15:44Speaker 3: we care about.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:45Speaker 3: So now I'm like, we even have to double down
- 15:47Speaker 3: on the spaces that feed us because we're not, it's,
- 15:51Speaker 3: if you're plugged into the internet and you have to
- 15:53Speaker 3: work within that space, like we do just to remain, um, it,
- 15:59Speaker 3: it's a vehicle. It's just to have the channel. You
- 16:02Speaker 3: have to be mindful of how you plug in and
- 16:04Speaker 3: the time you put into it. And so I'm always
- 16:06Speaker 3: mindful of that. Now I'm like, is that really my thought?
- 16:10Speaker 3: Or did I just get that from them? Is that
- 16:11Speaker 3: my fear? So it's interesting.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It's so real. It's so true.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Like, yeah, it's force feeding you so many things or
- 16:19Speaker 1: compounding on something that may be like this size of
- 16:22Speaker 1: like a pepper inside of you, like, you know, a
- 16:25Speaker 1: grain of pepper inside of you. And now it's like
- 16:28Speaker 1: my identity and this is my biggest issue. And I
- 16:31Speaker 1: just can't like stress enough for people. I know everyone
- 16:36Speaker 1: convinces themselves you have to do it a certain way
- 16:40Speaker 1: or you have to even, I just want to tell you,
- 16:45Speaker 1: From 20 plus years of experience, you don't. You really don't.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think people even assume I go about things completely
- 16:54Speaker 1: different than I do. Every meeting I have had in
- 16:58Speaker 1: the last six years, I'll say, if you ask me
- 17:01Speaker 1: about my following count, I'm out.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I don't care.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And if that's what you care about, you're not the
- 17:07Speaker 1: place for me. I have a real set of skills,
- 17:10Speaker 1: a real set of gifts. And like, I don't need
- 17:14Speaker 1: to question myself. I don't need to lower my trust
- 17:17Speaker 1: for myself because of a zeitgeist that exists right now
- 17:21Speaker 1: that will not last, that does not actually matter. And
- 17:25Speaker 1: I think you really have to train yourself to have
- 17:28Speaker 1: that level of distance between others validation or support of
- 17:33Speaker 1: what you're doing. And it's like, that's where the face...
- 17:36Speaker 1: Faith muscle gets built in such a massive and compounded way.
- 17:40Speaker 1: It's like you could never tell me that something I'm
- 17:43Speaker 1: doing isn't it because I also don't need it to
- 17:47Speaker 1: be it. Like I understand that the way God uses me,
- 17:51Speaker 1: what I'm saying today, it might take off today.
- 17:55Speaker 2: It might take off in 10 years.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Or it might inspire the person that's going to say
- 18:00Speaker 1: and do something that takes off, that helps more. And
- 18:03Speaker 1: I trust that whatever that path is for me, it's
- 18:06Speaker 1: more than enough. Like more than enough because my life
- 18:10Speaker 1: is still good. I have a beautiful life that I
- 18:13Speaker 1: love with things that are so important to me in
- 18:18Speaker 1: it that it's like my witnessing and presence with all
- 18:22Speaker 1: of that. I can never let the importance of it
- 18:25Speaker 1: leave me. I can never let like the depth of
- 18:28Speaker 1: it leave me to care about something that I've learned
- 18:31Speaker 1: in 20 plus years of being a working adult. It
- 18:34Speaker 1: just doesn't matter. It just really, truly doesn't, it doesn't
- 18:40Speaker 1: have real effect on the long-term nature of your life.
- 18:43Speaker 3: That's so good. I feel like that's going to free
- 18:46Speaker 3: some people because it's just like, you have to, there
- 18:50Speaker 3: is this balance of like playing the game. Being outside,
- 18:54Speaker 3: being visible, staying top of mind. And then there's this
- 18:56Speaker 3: reality that like that burns you out, that wears you
- 18:59Speaker 3: out over time. And the people who have decided and
- 19:02Speaker 3: committed to their assignment, their journey, really always find their things.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Always.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Period.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Because it's what God wants. So if it's blessed by God,
- 19:12Speaker 3: we worried about little resources. He's like, baby, I'm hanging
- 19:15Speaker 3: stars in the sky. Stop playing.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Girl.
- 19:19Speaker 3: I'm infinite. What do you want? Let's talk. I'm infinite.
- 19:22Speaker 3: I'm going to provide. If I send you there, I'm
- 19:24Speaker 3: providing for you on the way there. I'm going to
- 19:26Speaker 3: figure it out. You're going to go. I'm going to
- 19:28Speaker 3: give you the things.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And you know what's so interesting to me about things, right?
- 19:32Speaker 1: And I think about this, especially with someone like you
- 19:35Speaker 1: and some of what you just shared. You've had really,
- 19:39Speaker 1: really deeply powerful moments owning stages in a multitude of ways, right?
- 19:46Speaker 1: Because like you have been in amphitheaters of faith, right?
- 19:51Speaker 1: Like the work that you do with Sarah Jakes Roberts,
- 19:53Speaker 1: you know, and so many others in that space. And
- 19:56Speaker 1: then also it's like on a red carpet or having,
- 19:59Speaker 1: you know, really profound conversations with Academy Award winners or,
- 20:03Speaker 1: you know, like the power and the potency and the
- 20:06Speaker 1: real effect and value that that has, right? Because The
- 20:09Speaker 1: way your light works, you are, I.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Mean, girl, like you are very special.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And this halo and this radiance that exists in and
- 20:23Speaker 1: through and around you, you're lighting up someone's life just
- 20:27Speaker 1: because you're standing in front of them. Then you open
- 20:29Speaker 1: your mouth, right? you're blessing them because the thing about
- 20:32Speaker 1: you is before you ask a question, you pour into
- 20:35Speaker 1: the entire person of everything that you see and feel
- 20:38Speaker 1: from them. Like you give it so much thoughtfulness. Then
- 20:43Speaker 1: you're bringing their work to life, right, for the audience.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And when you think about the power and the depth
- 20:50Speaker 1: of the sacred exchange that that really is, and then
- 20:56Speaker 1: it's being recorded. So people in the audience are seeing
- 20:59Speaker 1: it and then people will receive it for time to come, right?
- 21:03Speaker 1: How silly would it be to undermine your calling to
- 21:09Speaker 1: trivialize it and minimize it down to, did my.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Post about it do well?
- 21:14Speaker 3: How absurd.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Like, None of this means anything because I didn't get
- 21:26Speaker 1: over this many likes or comments. The work is already done.
- 21:31Speaker 1: It's already in motion, moving through the world. It doesn't matter.
- 21:38Speaker 1: In this weird game that we play of thinking, well,
- 21:41Speaker 1: if that one thing happens, then da-da-da-da-da. How many things
- 21:46Speaker 1: have you done? How many things have we done? It's
- 21:49Speaker 1: never one thing that's going to do da-da-da-da-da-da.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:53Speaker 2: It's the bigger.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Meaning of your life that is taking place through the
- 21:58Speaker 1: work that you do.
- 21:59Speaker 2: And it's like.
- 22:02Speaker 1: We cannot lose sight of that. Like those of us
- 22:05Speaker 1: that are here with big works in whatever ways that
- 22:08Speaker 1: we share it, like we cannot lose sight of that.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 1: For platforms that are going to disappear at some point.
- 22:17Speaker 3: I mean, they could go down today. And what would happen?
- 22:21Speaker 3: Would we still? And yes, we'd still be effective. We'd
- 22:24Speaker 3: still have gives.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Girl.
- 22:26Speaker 3: These things really don't. They really shouldn't. But that's a
- 22:30Speaker 3: whole thing.
- 22:30Speaker 1: And if it just lights up for the person in
- 22:32Speaker 1: the grocery store, okay, thank you.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I still have everything I need.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Okay, okay, wait, wait, wait. Because I really want to
- 22:38Speaker 1: dive into this moment of what you're bringing into life.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But then I also want to have one last thing
- 22:43Speaker 1: to say about your man that I want to touch on. Okay.
- 22:59Speaker 1: You know what I think is really powerful, especially for good,
- 23:04Speaker 1: good women that find right relationship and love?
- 23:09Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Not just is he now like the accurate mirror for you,
- 23:16Speaker 1: someone that can see you without your mask and really
- 23:21Speaker 1: like reflect back, but also good women deserve, who are
- 23:29Speaker 1: working really hard, just the feeling of love and tenderness
- 23:33Speaker 1: to come home to, being hugged, being held, having depth
- 23:37Speaker 1: of intimacy in all the forms, like how that actually
- 23:41Speaker 1: represents replenishes a woman's body and soul it's just like
- 23:47Speaker 1: i i i did this um i did this event
- 23:50Speaker 1: in new york we were talking about it earlier this
- 23:52Speaker 1: um the mental wealth expo.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Wealth expo and you were like the curator this year
- 23:57Speaker 3: yeah so you didn't just you was the one it
- 24:00Speaker 3: was different this year yeah it felt different and so
- 24:02Speaker 3: i could tell debbie was Congratulations, sister.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Thank you so much.
- 24:07Speaker 3: And to you and Charlamagne and to all the folks
- 24:09Speaker 3: who bring this to life, but especially.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Proud of the work you did. Thank you so much. He,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I mean, he, yeah, that is my brother and he
- 24:14Speaker 1: has been bringing this to life for six years. It
- 24:16Speaker 1: is a completely free event with some of the most
- 24:20Speaker 1: powerful mental health programming that happens in the tri-state area.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So when I'm working, I was in talent, right? I
- 24:26Speaker 1: was in producer mode. So I'm like there and I'm
- 24:28Speaker 1: just like, I always fast on big work days, like
- 24:31Speaker 1: And I'm just focused. And so it's.
- 24:34Speaker 3: A long day. Wait, hold on. Fast before or the
- 24:36Speaker 3: whole day you're not eating?
- 24:37Speaker 1: I typically fast during the day. I don't say that
- 24:40Speaker 1: I recommend that for anyone. That's just what works for
- 24:43Speaker 1: my body.
- 24:43Speaker 3: But we forget to eat. Like when we're really in it,
- 24:45Speaker 3: my sister has to literally be like, hey, sit down.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And I find that I.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Work better in that way personally. Like it just, I
- 24:53Speaker 1: work with who I am better when I'm hollow. When
- 24:56Speaker 1: I'm like that kind of clear physically, mentally, emotionally inside.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I'm not saying that's a good idea for anybody, but
- 25:03Speaker 1: it's the recipe that works for me. And then I
- 25:07Speaker 1: usually have like a feast that night. You know, like
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'm like, give me.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Like three burgers.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Exactly. My sister be like, yo, you got to eat.
- 25:15Speaker 3: But then I'm like, I honestly, I'm so in it.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I cannot, like, I don't even think about it.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 1: And then it's going to slow me down.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I don't need it.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I don't want to have to pop into the potty.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I don't want to have to, you know, la, la, la, la, la. Yes.
- 25:27Speaker 1: But when I got out of it, I was really
- 25:30Speaker 1: like feeling grateful for my partner in my life right
- 25:34Speaker 1: now because I made it back to the hotel. And
- 25:37Speaker 1: there was just a DoorDash waiting for me with an
- 25:40Speaker 1: acai bowl, three sparkling waters.
- 25:44Speaker 2: And like multiple bananas. And that's what I love.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Wow.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And I was like.
- 25:48Speaker 3: That's so beautiful.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Man, like that is what.
- 25:55Speaker 1: you know, when we have women who are so excellent
- 25:59Speaker 1: talk about the journey of having to delay or forfeit
- 26:03Speaker 1: partnership because of, you know, the bigness of their life
- 26:08Speaker 1: or their career or the work they've done on themselves.
- 26:11Speaker 1: It's like, we deserve that kind of like tender care,
- 26:16Speaker 1: like that kind of what we don't have to think
- 26:18Speaker 1: about in addition to like the.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Physical love that we get to share with another.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Yeah, like the.
- 26:23Speaker 3: Truth of like, When I was, because I probably didn't
- 26:28Speaker 3: date for, like, 400 years. Like, it felt like I
- 26:31Speaker 3: really didn't. I was, like, I had dated on and off. Like,
- 26:37Speaker 3: my last serious relationship was in my early 20s. I
- 26:40Speaker 3: had dated on and off in New York, dated on
- 26:43Speaker 3: and off in L.A. But, you know, that gets really weird.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Sometimes the men, you know, they want to be the
- 26:47Speaker 3: gift and all the things. And ain't nothing wrong with L.A. Well, actually,
- 26:50Speaker 3: there is something wrong with L.A. It just wasn't my perfect. Yeah,
- 26:55Speaker 3: not my jam.
- 26:55Speaker 1: LA and New York are very unique places to date.
- 26:59Speaker 3: And New York, at least I can remember I'm fine
- 27:02Speaker 3: in New York because there's always going to be a
- 27:03Speaker 3: man on the corner like, hey, ma, what you doing?
- 27:07Speaker 3: Where you going? Here, it's like, sorry, excuse me. I'm
- 27:11Speaker 3: looking for a Kardashian. Like I'm like, bro, like it, it,
- 27:14Speaker 3: it started to mess with me. I had to go
- 27:16Speaker 3: to the East coast a couple of times just to
- 27:18Speaker 3: remember that I'm fine. Like it was really starting to
- 27:21Speaker 3: get to me. The loneliness that I started to feel,
- 27:23Speaker 3: the craving that I wanted for love was getting so
- 27:27Speaker 3: loud that it started to, I started to pray like, God, just,
- 27:30Speaker 3: just like help me settle in contentment with being a
- 27:33Speaker 3: rich auntie because my heart feels like it's breaking right now.
- 27:35Speaker 3: And I don't want to walk in spaces like, You
- 27:39Speaker 3: and I understand this as people who help move rooms.
- 27:42Speaker 3: If your energy is off, the whole experience is off.
- 27:44Speaker 3: We can fake it, but someone can ask you, how
- 27:46Speaker 3: you doing? And now you in tears, and now everybody
- 27:50Speaker 3: worried about you. And it's not even that deep. So
- 27:52Speaker 3: I'm like, Lord, I don't want to... be carrying this heaviness.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Please help me because I'm not okay right now. I
- 27:59Speaker 3: feel so lonely. I feel so alone and my heart
- 28:01Speaker 3: is so broken. And your friends do the best that
- 28:04Speaker 3: they can. They're like, oh, he's coming, girl. Just keep
- 28:06Speaker 3: it up, child. Three, after five years of that, you're like, please.
- 28:10Speaker 3: I don't know if he's coming anymore. And I started
- 28:13Speaker 3: to allow- Who are you talking to? And I'm like,
- 28:14Speaker 3: where is he? Can you talk? Can you get him faster?
- 28:17Speaker 3: I told God in prayer and I told my boyfriend
- 28:20Speaker 3: this now. I was like, when he comes, I'm jumping
- 28:22Speaker 3: him for taking so long. Like- I'm going to just
- 28:25Speaker 3: get one good that I haven't punched him or anything.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Don't worry, y'all. But that's how upset I was. And
- 28:31Speaker 3: I remember feeling like when we first got into our
- 28:35Speaker 3: groove of him checking on me, him covering me, and
- 28:40Speaker 3: not only me, my family. When I'm not in D.C.,
- 28:43Speaker 3: he's making sure my parents are good and they're shoveled out.
- 28:48Speaker 3: I'm like, this is what the girls had this whole
- 28:51Speaker 3: time I was out here just living life. I'm out
- 28:54Speaker 3: here just, you know, like I used to look forward
- 28:57Speaker 3: to getting back to my room and just watching a
- 28:59Speaker 3: good movie and going to bed after like, you know,
- 29:01Speaker 3: just traveling. Now I'm like, okay, like I have a
- 29:03Speaker 3: person that's wanting to know like, how did it go?
- 29:05Speaker 3: You good? Are you in the room? Like, They understand
- 29:08Speaker 3: if I'm not talking no more because I don't have
- 29:10Speaker 3: no energy left to give. But love you. I'm going
- 29:12Speaker 3: to call you later. Like, he's been the most patient
- 29:15Speaker 3: and giving person. And we have our things. Like, don't
- 29:18Speaker 3: get me wrong. And it is the deepest emotional work, too.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Because, like, you really have to consider someone else. I
- 29:24Speaker 3: had a lot of blind spots. You think you heal.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Get into a relationship. And get into a relationship.
- 29:33Speaker 3: And they're like, did you really have to say it
- 29:34Speaker 3: like that? And I'm like, say it like what? I
- 29:36Speaker 3: didn't say anything crazy. Like that was kind of condescending.
- 29:39Speaker 3: And I'm like, no, it wasn't. But then if I,
- 29:42Speaker 3: but then if I respect you and I hear you,
- 29:43Speaker 3: I have to hear you. Like, how did I say it?
- 29:45Speaker 3: How did it sound to you? Because that's not how
- 29:47Speaker 3: I meant it. Okay. Let me learn how to speak.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Like there's a whole. dialect that you have to learn
- 29:53Speaker 3: in relationships and so it's been making me put on
- 29:55Speaker 3: my big girl panties in a lot of ways and
- 29:57Speaker 3: then I sit and look at this thing that we're
- 30:00Speaker 3: creating and I'm like okay it's beautiful yeah it's really
- 30:03Speaker 3: beautiful it's it's relationships are work but they're really beautiful
- 30:07Speaker 3: work of bringing together two lives that is is wildly
- 30:12Speaker 3: important But we can't sugarcoat it. Like the pictures are cute.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Like we love the pictures and we love the nights
- 30:18Speaker 3: out and things like that. But like.
- 30:19Speaker 1: It's real effort.
- 30:20Speaker 3: It's real effort. Like if your partner's not okay and
- 30:23Speaker 3: you're having a long day, you got to put on your,
- 30:26Speaker 3: get you some tea or whatever and sit and talk.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 3: It's the person God entrusted you with.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Just making a date night once a week. That's not it.
- 30:34Speaker 3: That's not it.
- 30:35Speaker 1: That's not it.
- 30:35Speaker 3: It's a daily work. Like you're doing okay.
- 30:37Speaker 2: So effortful.
- 30:38Speaker 3: It's so effortful. So then when you're. used to building
- 30:42Speaker 3: something on your own time. So now, you know, you
- 30:45Speaker 3: take a little to me, me, myself, take two, three
- 30:48Speaker 3: hours in the morning before I really want to do
- 30:50Speaker 3: anything to chill. Now I'm like, dang, I have to
- 30:52Speaker 3: like really get up and do my things because this
- 30:55Speaker 3: time and the evening belongs to us. And if I
- 30:57Speaker 3: say I want this, so this time is stretching me
- 31:01Speaker 3: in like finding my rhythm and finding a new way
- 31:04Speaker 3: to be after 2020. plus years, 15 years of being
- 31:09Speaker 3: in it by myself, I'm like, oh, this is what
- 31:11Speaker 3: it's like to build with someone. So it's beautiful and
- 31:14Speaker 3: it's a lot, but it's beautiful. Ooh, girl. Growing up.
- 31:22Speaker 3: It's crazy, y'all.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I want to dive into Creatives of Faith, and it's
- 31:36Speaker 1: been really cool watching you build that.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Crazy sister.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I remember a couple years ago, we were in Martha's Vineyard.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Oh, I think I know what you're talking about.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Go, go.
- 31:47Speaker 2: We were at this dinner. Yes, it was Issa, and
- 31:51Speaker 2: it was Harborview.
- 31:52Speaker 3: And Abby Phillips.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Abby Phillips, Shereen at Warner Brothers.
- 31:56Speaker 2: It was, yeah, really, really, really beautiful dinner, beautiful night.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I forget all the inner pieces, but I just remember
- 32:04Speaker 1: we were in the corner, we had a conversation and
- 32:08Speaker 1: we were kind of talking about, I felt like you
- 32:14Speaker 1: were being too hard on yourself. which now you've clarified
- 32:17Speaker 1: me that you were.
- 32:18Speaker 2: It was all real.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I felt it.
- 32:20Speaker 3: It's all true, yes. See, when we don't show, like
- 32:24Speaker 3: when we're not okay, our people can see it. But
- 32:28Speaker 3: I'm glad you're my people because you got me together
- 32:29Speaker 3: that night. Keep going.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Well, and I remember noticing because it's like, it's everything
- 32:33Speaker 1: you said at the beginning of this episode. We create
- 32:36Speaker 1: this false narrative and it is so easy to lock
- 32:39Speaker 1: into it as if it's truth. Come on. And then
- 32:42Speaker 1: you're only saying it to yourself. So no one else
- 32:44Speaker 1: can check you on it, on the fact that girl, no,
- 32:47Speaker 1: that ain't true. What are you talking about? And I
- 32:49Speaker 1: remember like, I, you were sharing kind of what you
- 32:52Speaker 1: shared at the beginning.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Of this episode.
- 32:54Speaker 1: It was just this completely false, insane belief that like
- 33:01Speaker 1: what you weren't already doing, you know, that it wasn't
- 33:05Speaker 1: already like really powerful and really incredible. And, deeply in
- 33:12Speaker 1: your gifts and service and that it was really seen,
- 33:15Speaker 1: that it was like actually truly celebrated because the way
- 33:20Speaker 1: it needed to line up in our youngest version of
- 33:23Speaker 1: self and the way we idealize and envision our future,
- 33:27Speaker 1: it's like one piece might've been missing and so it
- 33:29Speaker 1: seemed like it wasn't existing. And I just remember, yeah,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I just remember seeing that, feeling that, understanding that deeply
- 33:37Speaker 1: and just being like, and it's not true. Like, this
- 33:40Speaker 1: is not true.
- 33:41Speaker 3: You yoked me up. It was like, Gia, no, I'm
- 33:45Speaker 3: not letting you stay.
- 33:46Speaker 1: No.
- 33:47Speaker 2: But also it's like.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Everything came in. And I feel like that is the
- 33:55Speaker 1: thing with each of us. Like we have to say
- 33:57Speaker 1: out loud that like.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Actually that is not true.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Yes.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Whatever this weird shit is that.
- 34:02Speaker 1: I'm thinking and feeling, it's not true. It's not true.
- 34:04Speaker 1: And as soon as we say that and surrender it,
- 34:07Speaker 1: surrender that like chip and burden. Come on. Come on.
- 34:11Speaker 1: It's like God's like, oh, now you're fertile soil ready
- 34:15Speaker 1: to receive like the truth and you'll see the power
- 34:20Speaker 1: of it. And so we haven't even talked about any
- 34:23Speaker 1: of that since and just seeing like the last two
- 34:26Speaker 1: years of like stuff you've been bringing to life, like
- 34:29Speaker 1: ways that you've been like just like owning the depth
- 34:32Speaker 1: and power of like what you are and have been.
- 34:35Speaker 2: So tell me, like walk me through.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Wow. this vision for what you've created, who it's serving,
- 34:45Speaker 1: how it's serving.
- 34:46Speaker 3: I love this. First of all, I'm honored to be
- 34:49Speaker 3: here back with you because I swear you're like a
- 34:51Speaker 3: beautiful checkpoint. Like, are you on it? Are you in it?
- 34:55Speaker 3: Let's talk about it because it's so good. And I
- 34:58Speaker 3: remember that night you telling me like, it's so much
- 35:00Speaker 3: more for you. Please stop. Stop doing that to yourself.
- 35:04Speaker 3: And I really needed to hear that. The Vineyard is
- 35:06Speaker 3: a very special place. I'm sad I didn't get to
- 35:07Speaker 3: see you this time. I was like, where is Debbie?
- 35:09Speaker 1: Girl, I brought my son this year. So mostly it
- 35:14Speaker 1: was like we were on bike rides and we were like, yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 1: that's the best. Getting our ice creams together.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry. I got to hear about the baby's
- 35:21Speaker 3: experience after this. But I say all that to say.
- 35:26Speaker 3: So in 2020, when we were all going through all
- 35:29Speaker 3: of the pandemics and the shifts, I was one of
- 35:33Speaker 3: those people at home taking an online class because we
- 35:35Speaker 3: just couldn't be still.
- 35:38Speaker 1: What I would give for the pandemic right now, tell
- 35:41Speaker 1: me to keep my ass home.
- 35:41Speaker 2: I say that, but I'm scared.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Because... I feel like this version, like we were all good.
- 35:46Speaker 3: We was ordering our Amazon packages and things.
- 35:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:48Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel like this version of the pandemic, people
- 35:50Speaker 3: are like one paycheck away from not being good.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 3: So I'm like, I want a slow down, but I
- 35:57Speaker 3: want to make sure people are okay as if we
- 36:00Speaker 3: slow down because I think it's getting really real. But
- 36:03Speaker 3: I say all that to say in 2020, that's when
- 36:06Speaker 3: things really started shifting for me. When I started taking
- 36:08Speaker 3: therapy seriously, like that was really important for me because
- 36:12Speaker 3: I realized that the, the applause and the busyness was
- 36:15Speaker 3: taking me away from the healing that I really needed
- 36:17Speaker 3: to do for myself. And so I had to start
- 36:19Speaker 3: on that journey. And it's interesting that the business school
- 36:22Speaker 3: came at the same time, but it was like a
- 36:23Speaker 3: Britain co online business school for like creative entrepreneurs. And
- 36:27Speaker 3: one of the instructors asked us, what is the thing
- 36:31Speaker 3: that like keeps you up at night? When you think
- 36:33Speaker 3: about the thing that, that keeps you worried or concerned,
- 36:38Speaker 3: what is that thing? Cause that's probably a part of
- 36:40Speaker 3: your purpose in your, in your assignment on this, on
- 36:43Speaker 3: this side of, like what are you really trying to
- 36:45Speaker 3: do and when I thought about it I was like
- 36:48Speaker 3: I really want creatives to stop giving in so easily
- 36:52Speaker 3: on their assignment I really want community for people because
- 36:56Speaker 3: every single time that I've given up my community has
- 37:00Speaker 3: led me back to the space of understanding that this
- 37:03Speaker 3: is so much bigger than me and the depths of
- 37:07Speaker 3: sadness and darkness I would go to of when things
- 37:11Speaker 3: wouldn't work out, when rejection would come. When I tried
- 37:14Speaker 3: to handle it by myself, I would end up giving up.
- 37:16Speaker 3: It wasn't easy for me to do that dance. And
- 37:21Speaker 3: eventually my friends were the ones that were able to
- 37:23Speaker 3: be like, I need you to, you know, come on,
- 37:26Speaker 3: come back over here. And I realized the importance of
- 37:28Speaker 3: community and the importance of also understanding that this is
- 37:32Speaker 3: all God's plan. And so I.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Had the idea. And I was like, well, I just,
- 37:37Speaker 3: I think there needs to be a creative community where
- 37:39Speaker 3: we like build our spiritual skill sets and our faith
- 37:42Speaker 3: skill sets as we are serving the creative ones too.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I was.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Loving everything that I was experiencing. But like, you know,
- 37:50Speaker 3: in the hip hop and music industry, TV, film, like faith,
- 37:53Speaker 3: especially now it's more, I think more present. But back then,
- 37:56Speaker 3: like in those 2020s, like 2010s, I remember like someone
- 38:01Speaker 3: on a radio show I was working for at the
- 38:03Speaker 3: time being like, oh, but she's so into that faith stuff.
- 38:06Speaker 3: And I've heard like men in the New York days,
- 38:09Speaker 3: like a couple of my homeboys was like, yeah, I
- 38:10Speaker 3: got friends who think you fine, but they think you
- 38:12Speaker 3: just too religious, like too faithed up. And I was like,
- 38:16Speaker 3: This is wild. Like, okay, sure.
- 38:18Speaker 2: I love God too much?
- 38:20Speaker 3: Okay. Okay. What? So then... I was like, I feel
- 38:29Speaker 3: like it just needs to be called Creatives of Faith.
- 38:31Speaker 3: And I was just like, no, because somebody already has that.
- 38:34Speaker 3: That's so obvious. And I looked online. It wasn't there.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Nobody had bought it. Unique Jones Gibson always says, buy
- 38:41Speaker 3: the domain and save it for later. Even if you
- 38:44Speaker 3: don't use it, you can sell it. If you have
- 38:45Speaker 3: an idea, immediately buy the domain. So I bought the domain.
- 38:48Speaker 3: I got all the pages and this was 2020. And
- 38:51Speaker 3: for four years, I was just like, procrastinating, like literally
- 38:56Speaker 3: just like, okay, so I have this site. So me
- 38:58Speaker 3: and my friend Akiva, who is like my main designer
- 39:01Speaker 3: and amazing designer, um, she had built out the site
- 39:04Speaker 3: for me. We had gone through like literally Debbie, like
- 39:06Speaker 3: 15 iterations of the site. Like I had so many
- 39:09Speaker 3: things in my mind playing like, well, I'm not a pastor.
- 39:12Speaker 3: So people won't want to follow anything that I do
- 39:15Speaker 3: talking about faith. And I'm not where I want to
- 39:17Speaker 3: be in my career. So people won't really want to
- 39:20Speaker 3: be a part of it. Like everything was just like
- 39:22Speaker 3: telling me like, no, no, no, no, no. And so
- 39:25Speaker 3: this last- Which, how ridiculous. I know.
- 39:28Speaker 1: That is hilarious.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Isn't it?
- 39:30Speaker 2: But that's what, that's.
- 39:31Speaker 3: What was happening. And mind you, I'm seeing in real time,
- 39:35Speaker 3: all of these people build beautiful things and beautiful spaces. Like,
- 39:39Speaker 3: you know, you don't go to a woman of all
- 39:41Speaker 3: of conference and come back the same. You just don't
- 39:43Speaker 3: like Sarah has cultivated such an amazing space of leaders
- 39:47Speaker 3: and pastors and her own journey that has allowed people
- 39:51Speaker 3: to be in a space of praise that like in
- 39:54Speaker 3: worship and word that you cannot leave the same. Like
- 39:58Speaker 3: you just cannot. And so years go by, I'm doing that.
- 40:01Speaker 3: And then every year I'm doing CultureCon with Imani. And
- 40:05Speaker 3: I was the first host, one of the first hosts
- 40:07Speaker 3: of CultureCon when it was in a little WeWork Brooklyn lobby.
- 40:11Speaker 3: And so like two years ago, I watched Sarah take
- 40:16Speaker 3: Woman Evolved and the mantle of Woman Thou Art Loosed.
- 40:19Speaker 3: And I watched her walk to the stage when Bishop
- 40:22Speaker 3: Jakes was like covering her with his jacket. It's like
- 40:25Speaker 3: a viral video. And he was like, I'm handing you
- 40:28Speaker 3: the mantle now. And you could see her shaking. Like
- 40:33Speaker 3: her whole body was shaking.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Wow.
- 40:35Speaker 3: You're taking on this mantle. One year, Woman Evolved was
- 40:39Speaker 3: 3,400 people at the Potter's house. The next year it
- 40:43Speaker 3: was 30 to 40,000 people at Globe Life Field in Dallas.
- 40:49Speaker 3: So I'm like, Jesus, this is crazy. Watching Imani build
- 40:55Speaker 3: CultureCon year after year goes from 500. I wasn't there
- 40:59Speaker 3: in the apartment when it was just 12 people, but
- 41:01Speaker 3: it goes from 200 to 1,000 to the next year, 5,000,
- 41:06Speaker 3: next year, 8,000. Now this year, 12,000. It's so big
- 41:10Speaker 3: that they have outgrown the Brooklyn Navy Yard. And so
- 41:13Speaker 3: I've always seen both of those spaces. And every time
- 41:16Speaker 3: I would go to a woman evolve, I would want
- 41:17Speaker 3: to know a little bit more about the business structure
- 41:20Speaker 3: of these women who are killing the game. Like, yes, Dr.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Anita and all these amazing folks that we love are
- 41:26Speaker 3: also business women that have books and ideas and brands
- 41:29Speaker 3: and cultures. You are one of them where you're like,
- 41:33Speaker 3: I love that you get to work in purpose, but
- 41:34Speaker 3: how does the business work behind it? And how did you...
- 41:36Speaker 3: Tell me about the understanding of your blueprint and like
- 41:39Speaker 3: how you actually apply your purpose and your faith to
- 41:41Speaker 3: what you do. How does it fuel what you do?
- 41:43Speaker 3: And then I would go to Woman Evolve and get
- 41:44Speaker 3: these beautiful moments. And then I would go to Culture
- 41:47Speaker 3: Con and it would be like a Ryan Coogler on
- 41:50Speaker 3: the stage or some amazing filmmaker or writer. And they
- 41:53Speaker 3: would say, you know, I just got this idea. I
- 41:55Speaker 3: was praying and meditating and just move on. And I'm like, no,
- 41:58Speaker 3: what was the prayer? I want to know. What was
- 42:00Speaker 3: the meditation? What was the practice? And so I was like,
- 42:03Speaker 3: I wish there was a space. And I was like, oh,
- 42:04Speaker 3: maybe I'm supposed to build it. And so that's where
- 42:08Speaker 3: Creatives of Faith lives at, that intersection of understanding that
- 42:12Speaker 3: we are, creativity and faith are intrinsically connected. How do
- 42:18Speaker 3: we do that work of walking out our assignment together?
- 42:21Speaker 3: How can we make sure that if I'm connected to you,
- 42:25Speaker 3: that I'm not only rooting for you in the post,
- 42:27Speaker 3: but I'm praying for you on the way to you
- 42:30Speaker 3: getting to that position? Like, how am I not letting
- 42:32Speaker 3: you fall? And so how that ended up working was,
- 42:36Speaker 3: We were at Accelerate Her in Miami. That whole week
- 42:41Speaker 3: was crazy, Debbie. Oh, I just, it was wild. So,
- 42:45Speaker 3: you know, they have like on the ground coaches, Dr.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Naima and so many amazing folks are there.
- 42:53Speaker 1: Kim does amazing. Yes.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Yes. Shout out to Kim Blackwell, Accelerate Her.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Well, I don't know how it works. You know, chic.
- 43:00Speaker 3: It's her invite only rooms. I don't know. I don't
- 43:02Speaker 3: want to tell.
- 43:02Speaker 2: It's an amazing summit.
- 43:03Speaker 3: It's an amazing summit.
- 43:04Speaker 2: She does an incredible job.
- 43:06Speaker 3: And she has these coaches there that are able to
- 43:09Speaker 3: sit with you and help you. And that first year
- 43:11Speaker 3: she had like 12 and I think there were still 12.
- 43:14Speaker 3: And so we all got really cool. And Naima is
- 43:18Speaker 3: able to see, like she looks you in your soul.
- 43:22Speaker 3: Like she's able to sit and see like, what do
- 43:24Speaker 3: you really want?
- 43:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:26Speaker 3: And so I was excited to go back, but sometimes
- 43:29Speaker 3: these conferences are benchmarkers for me. Like, what have I
- 43:32Speaker 3: accomplished in this past year? Because I never want to
- 43:35Speaker 3: feel like I'm furniture in the room. I never want
- 43:38Speaker 3: to be like, oh, and G's going to be there.
- 43:41Speaker 3: And sometimes when you grow up as little sis, you
- 43:45Speaker 3: feel like you're not contributing anymore. Like, oh, she's the
- 43:48Speaker 3: cute girl that, like, hypes up the room. And I'm like,
- 43:51Speaker 3: I know I'm more. I know I have more to offer.
- 43:53Speaker 3: And so, so much was happening. A brand that I
- 43:55Speaker 3: deeply love working with on a back-end call told someone
- 44:01Speaker 3: that they thought my content was stale. I was too
- 44:03Speaker 3: old for their brand. And they didn't want to work
- 44:05Speaker 3: with me anymore. And this is all happening. I'm sorry.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Excuse me.
- 44:07Speaker 3: Child. Okay.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:10Speaker 1: And also, who would relay that like that? Child. Okay.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Yeah. It was a lot going on.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Nah.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 2: I'll tell you the full tea afterwards.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I want to hear the thing. Yeah.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Okay, go. So usually that would have thrown me off
- 44:25Speaker 3: and made me be like, wow, this is another chip
- 44:29Speaker 3: on my back. Like, these people don't like me, so
- 44:32Speaker 3: I know I'm not good enough. And I was really
- 44:33Speaker 3: proud of myself because I was just like, okay, that's
- 44:36Speaker 3: your thought. Good luck. Some content that I did with
- 44:39Speaker 3: them was actually going viral that same week. So I
- 44:41Speaker 3: was like, okay. Like, Hey, hey, good luck, whatever. So
- 44:49Speaker 3: we get to the event and on the way down,
- 44:53Speaker 3: five of my friends that I've worked with over the
- 44:54Speaker 3: last like 10 years are texting me and they're like, yo, G,
- 44:58Speaker 3: I don't have any work. Creatives are going through the
- 45:01Speaker 3: worst time. I mean, every industry has been hit hard
- 45:03Speaker 3: by this economy and the targeted gutting of DEI practices, companies, positions,
- 45:10Speaker 3: like targeted on our workforce for black and brown folks. And,
- 45:16Speaker 3: you know, creatives always get it.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And let's be clear, it wasn't because anyone was quote
- 45:20Speaker 1: unquote DIY, DEI.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Yes.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Edit the things.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Let's be clear.
- 45:28Speaker 1: It's not because all of these people were a DEI
- 45:32Speaker 1: program and that's what, no, it's, it's an excuse and
- 45:36Speaker 1: it's a way to, to eradicate people of color from
- 45:40Speaker 1: the workforce.
- 45:41Speaker 3: And it's happening in so many levels. But creatives were
- 45:44Speaker 3: already gig working people. So when you take away the
- 45:48Speaker 3: pipeline of businesses who actually cared to at least add
- 45:53Speaker 3: somebody to their board that was black from the 2020
- 45:56Speaker 3: uprisings that we had, you know, the black square folks,
- 45:59Speaker 3: all of a sudden, all those positions are gone. All
- 46:01Speaker 3: that infrastructure that would bring the money to the creative
- 46:05Speaker 3: workforce and the projects and the things were gone, are gone.
- 46:09Speaker 3: I think they're starting to creep back up. But like that,
- 46:12Speaker 3: that first year when everybody was just trying to fall
- 46:15Speaker 3: in line and try not to get sued by this administration.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:19Speaker 3: It was scary. It is still scary. People are still recovering.
- 46:22Speaker 1: So systematized.
- 46:23Speaker 2: And it shows what the bigger issue is, right? Because
- 46:26Speaker 2: that should not affect.
- 46:30Speaker 1: The workforce of color in the world. It should not
- 46:33Speaker 1: affect it. It should not have any effect on it.
- 46:36Speaker 3: And here we are. And so, my friends, I'm a hustler.
- 46:42Speaker 3: It hit me hard. Ooh, child. It hit me so hard. But...
- 46:47Speaker 3: I was still working and I was still maximizing the
- 46:50Speaker 3: work that I was doing. So people would text me like, hey,
- 46:52Speaker 3: I see you're doing these amazing projects. Please let me
- 46:54Speaker 3: know if you have anything. And somebody the next day, hey, G,
- 46:58Speaker 3: like a lot of media girls are just like on
- 47:01Speaker 3: their last. Like it's been really bad. Everybody's just been
- 47:04Speaker 3: having to shape and move, move out of L.A., move
- 47:07Speaker 3: wherever you got to go to like make sure you
- 47:08Speaker 3: don't lose everything you worked for in these last 10
- 47:10Speaker 3: to 15 years. And so I have friends who were like, hey, G, like,
- 47:14Speaker 3: I don't know if they're looking for any producers or whatever. Like,
- 47:17Speaker 3: please let me know. So five texts come through on
- 47:20Speaker 3: the way to Ken's event. And I'm like, OK, God,
- 47:24Speaker 3: I don't know. This is really sad. I don't know
- 47:26Speaker 3: what to do. And then a white man who I
- 47:27Speaker 3: haven't worked with in 10 years text me and said, hey,
- 47:31Speaker 3: I don't know if you know of any projects, but
- 47:33Speaker 3: if you know of anything, let me know. And I said,
- 47:35Speaker 3: we got to pray because if this doesn't hit, if
- 47:39Speaker 3: this doesn't hit y'all. It's really bad. And I didn't
- 47:44Speaker 3: know what to do, but I just knew that we
- 47:48Speaker 3: need each other right now. And so I went, I
- 47:50Speaker 3: was at church at home in Maryland at Zion church
- 47:53Speaker 3: in Greenbelt. And I was in the parking lot and
- 47:56Speaker 3: God just told me, just post that you're going to
- 47:58Speaker 3: pray for people that you're going to do a prayer
- 47:59Speaker 3: call and that, you know, just share what you're feeling
- 48:03Speaker 3: right now. And so I post this post and I'm
- 48:05Speaker 3: just like, Hey, uh, everybody's not okay. And we had
- 48:09Speaker 3: to stop acting like we are like this Instagram, all
- 48:11Speaker 3: of this stuff is great, but like nobody's really doing
- 48:14Speaker 3: that well. And I feel like we don't know what's next,
- 48:17Speaker 3: but we do know who holds the chapter and we
- 48:20Speaker 3: need to come together and pray and cover each other. And,
- 48:23Speaker 3: you know, it was the first Monday in May and
- 48:25Speaker 3: I moved it from Monday to Tuesday because that's Met Gala.
- 48:28Speaker 3: So I was like, I don't know, media people might
- 48:29Speaker 3: have to work. So let me move it to Tuesday.
- 48:31Speaker 3: And I was just like, let's just pray and cover
- 48:33Speaker 3: each other because we don't know what this time is
- 48:35Speaker 3: going to bring. but we do know that we need
- 48:38Speaker 3: each other. And if we could just come together for
- 48:40Speaker 3: one night, let's just pray. Um, and this was, this
- 48:43Speaker 3: was like the impetus for the creatives of faith prayer calls.
- 48:47Speaker 3: And so the next night, over a thousand people were
- 48:51Speaker 3: praying with us on virtual zoom for three hours. I
- 48:54Speaker 3: called like three of my friends, um, Brenda Palmer, who's
- 48:57Speaker 3: an amazing apostle, amazing. Just, she's just an amazing voice
- 49:01Speaker 3: of God. She is so powerful. Uh, my friend Ty Headley,
- 49:04Speaker 3: who is, um, uniquely called to creatives in the faith space.
- 49:09Speaker 3: He has so much word and oil for it. And
- 49:12Speaker 3: then my friend, Eric Robinson, who is also like a prophetic,
- 49:15Speaker 3: just human being who hears from God in a way
- 49:18Speaker 3: that is always on time, always pointed and always able
- 49:22Speaker 3: to move people in the direction that they, that they need.
- 49:25Speaker 3: And so the three of us, I opened the call
- 49:27Speaker 3: with prayer and it just happened to be like the
- 49:30Speaker 3: segments were like every 15, 20 minutes, people would come on,
- 49:34Speaker 3: tell them what God was saying to them about this season,
- 49:36Speaker 3: about creativity, about what it needs. And in the chat,
- 49:39Speaker 3: people are going crazy. People are sharing their testimonies. People
- 49:45Speaker 3: are getting full fed, getting word, getting confirmation. It's just
- 49:50Speaker 3: overwhelmingly great. Lovey, Brittany, and Jovi were on. Brittany and
- 49:55Speaker 3: Jovi and I, you know, we have prayer calls and
- 49:57Speaker 3: they literally helped me walk through this moment because I
- 50:01Speaker 3: was so afraid. I've been holding it back for literally
- 50:05Speaker 3: four to five months because I started working on it
- 50:07Speaker 3: essentially at the top of 2020, or top of 2026,
- 50:11Speaker 3: like trying to build out the infrastructure of what it
- 50:12Speaker 3: looks like. But I was teetering and God knew that
- 50:16Speaker 3: if it wasn't going to be for me, I would
- 50:18Speaker 3: move for others. Like it had to be those five
- 50:21Speaker 3: people and then the sixth person. to make me be like, oh,
- 50:25Speaker 3: everybody's struggling? Oh, we got to talk. Let's just pray.
- 50:30Speaker 3: And so I had built the Mighty Community, and I
- 50:32Speaker 3: had been teetering with it, but I was just like,
- 50:34Speaker 3: I'm just going to put it out. Let's see if
- 50:35Speaker 3: people sign up. And over the first month, we had
- 50:39Speaker 3: like 100 folks who are there, and I'm still building
- 50:42Speaker 3: it out. One thing about this calling is that you
- 50:46Speaker 3: have to grow up in it, And I'm so grateful
- 50:49Speaker 3: for the folks who see something in me enough to
- 50:51Speaker 3: give me grace to grow up in a calling. Like
- 50:54Speaker 3: those are the things that blow me away. And so
- 50:56Speaker 3: that was the first night. And then the second night,
- 50:58Speaker 3: so I had been putting, pushing off Kev on stage's
- 51:01Speaker 3: masterclass for three months. Cause I was still so scared.
- 51:04Speaker 3: I was like, no one's going to come. No one's
- 51:06Speaker 3: going to come. No one's going to care. So the
- 51:09Speaker 3: first time I had to switch because I was like, hey,
- 51:11Speaker 3: we're not ready. The second time he was filming something
- 51:13Speaker 3: incredible for like two beers and then, you know, doing
- 51:16Speaker 3: the Kevon stage. And he was like, I can't make
- 51:18Speaker 3: this work, but let me know when's the next date.
- 51:20Speaker 3: And so the next date ended up being that week
- 51:23Speaker 3: of the prayer call the next day. So I'm like, well,
- 51:25Speaker 3: if 900 people came, let me see if people will
- 51:28Speaker 3: come to the Kevon stage free masterclass. And that also
- 51:32Speaker 3: got like 800 people of with Kev on stage. It
- 51:36Speaker 3: was the free experience. It was the opening week of
- 51:38Speaker 3: Craves of Faith, which was all free for everybody. And
- 51:41Speaker 3: I was for two hours, Kev on stage dragged us
- 51:46Speaker 3: about our purpose and knowing that like, this is not
- 51:50Speaker 3: about us. It is disrespectful to God for us to
- 51:52Speaker 3: have gifts that he gave us and trusted us with
- 51:55Speaker 3: and not to use them because of somebody's, He was like,
- 51:58Speaker 3: I posted for two to three years with 200 to
- 52:00Speaker 3: 300 views as my highest. And then one thing took
- 52:05Speaker 3: off and then people saw me. It was like, y'all
- 52:07Speaker 3: are so worried about these, this one post not doing well.
- 52:11Speaker 3: Y'all are overthinking it. Then Debbie, he makes me set
- 52:15Speaker 3: a timer, makes me set a timer. And he's like,
- 52:20Speaker 3: I'll show y'all how long it takes me to film
- 52:21Speaker 3: and edit a video and post it. He films the
- 52:24Speaker 3: video in front of us. He edits it. He puts
- 52:27Speaker 3: it together. In seven minutes, he's posted a video. And
- 52:31Speaker 3: within 10 minutes, it already had like 20,000 likes. And
- 52:33Speaker 3: he was like, y'all are overthinking it. Stop overthinking it.
- 52:38Speaker 2: It's a powerful lesson.
- 52:40Speaker 3: He's preaching to us. He's literally like, y'all. And this
- 52:44Speaker 3: was when he was being dragged, which leave Kev on
- 52:47Speaker 3: stage alone. One of the many times he was being
- 52:50Speaker 3: dragged on threads. And it was like, I, the, the
- 52:54Speaker 3: final question I always ask every creative who leads a
- 52:56Speaker 3: masterclass is what is God teaching you in this season
- 53:00Speaker 3: that you think every creative on this call needs to know? Like,
- 53:02Speaker 3: what are you learning? And he was just like, um,
- 53:06Speaker 3: they not going to get it. They're not always going
- 53:08Speaker 3: to get it.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:09Speaker 3: Noah built an ark and nobody cared. And, and nobody was,
- 53:14Speaker 3: nobody was trying to really help anything he was doing.
- 53:17Speaker 3: They thought it was crazy because there was no rain coming,
- 53:19Speaker 3: but God told him to build his ark. And you
- 53:21Speaker 3: can't convince people. You're going to spend so much time
- 53:24Speaker 3: convincing people you're not going to do your assignment. You're
- 53:27Speaker 3: going to be worried about folks. And I can't be
- 53:29Speaker 3: worried about what people think. I have to build my arc.
- 53:31Speaker 3: I have to move forward. So that was the first week.
- 53:34Speaker 3: And I was like, God, I don't even know what
- 53:37Speaker 3: this is. I don't even know how to lead a community.
- 53:39Speaker 3: I'm not that. I love people, but I also love
- 53:41Speaker 3: to go away from people. I'm really... Take me away.
- 53:46Speaker 3: I live for just a cuddle and nobody around. So
- 53:51Speaker 3: I'm like, God, I don't know how I'm going to
- 53:53Speaker 3: do this because I love people, but not that much. Like,
- 53:58Speaker 3: I love your people, but you know, we are a lot.
- 54:01Speaker 3: And so I was like, how am I going to
- 54:04Speaker 3: do this? And little by little, it's been shaping into
- 54:07Speaker 3: this beautiful experience where like the members, we're all family.
- 54:12Speaker 3: There are The thing that I've learned so much in
- 54:15Speaker 3: these past six months, the first thing is that the
- 54:21Speaker 3: Holy Spirit intricately designs our callings to be answered prayers
- 54:27Speaker 3: to and for each other. There is no way that
- 54:31Speaker 3: I could even articulate how it feels to hear. So
- 54:37Speaker 3: we do open monthly prayer calls every, for anybody that
- 54:42Speaker 3: wants to join, but we do our own internal like
- 54:45Speaker 3: Bible studies and walking with each other, co-working sessions. So
- 54:48Speaker 3: now I know like people's business and I'm like, how
- 54:51Speaker 3: you doing? How's your auntie doing? What are we doing?
- 54:54Speaker 3: Did you move on that? Like now we're all really
- 54:56Speaker 3: in it together. And so there, I, I've heard them
- 55:02Speaker 3: say like this, I was praying for this type of community.
- 55:05Speaker 3: Like I was so alone on my journey and like,
- 55:07Speaker 3: just thank you for being obedient. I wasn't, I wasn't okay.
- 55:10Speaker 3: I really needed this space. Thank you. And I'm like,
- 55:13Speaker 3: I'm over here stressing because I didn't post this and
- 55:16Speaker 3: do this and da, da, da, da. And I'm waiting.
- 55:18Speaker 3: And then I'm like, oh, but this is the why.
- 55:20Speaker 3: You as one person knowing that somebody cares about you.
- 55:23Speaker 3: And like we pray for each other. We cover each other.
- 55:25Speaker 3: We root for each other. And it's really important to
- 55:27Speaker 3: me that I continue to grow up in it and
- 55:31Speaker 3: find whatever rhythm I need to be able to over-serve
- 55:34Speaker 3: these people that God has entrusted me with. And so
- 55:37Speaker 3: it's this weird balance of like being a creative of
- 55:40Speaker 3: faith in real time and then building creatives of faith.
- 55:42Speaker 3: And so now I'm trying to find that that rhythm
- 55:45Speaker 3: of like, I'm not going to let go of everything
- 55:47Speaker 3: that I've worked for in my last 15 to 20 years.
- 55:49Speaker 3: But it's also like this is a space that God
- 55:51Speaker 3: is calling me to build. And so it's been this
- 55:54Speaker 3: beautiful thing. But Creatives of Faith is a online community
- 55:58Speaker 3: where we and sometimes we do virtual virtual and sometimes
- 56:00Speaker 3: we do in real life events where we. deepen our
- 56:03Speaker 3: faith and sharpen our creative skills. And we do that
- 56:06Speaker 3: through monthly Bible study, prayer calls and classes. Um, and
- 56:11Speaker 3: our masterclass experiences are monthly too. And so we've had
- 56:13Speaker 3: Kev on stage. We've had Skylar Marche. We have, we've
- 56:16Speaker 3: had ex Mayo. We've had Jimmy Jenkins who has a
- 56:19Speaker 3: movie coming out called God with us that starts like
- 56:21Speaker 3: little rail and all these amazing people. Um, We've had...
- 56:25Speaker 3: I feel like I'm forgetting folks.
- 56:27Speaker 4: Oh, Lord. Who was.
- 56:28Speaker 3: Did I say Skylar? We've had Imani Ellis. Imani showed
- 56:31Speaker 3: us the pitch deck for Culture Con. That's how generous
- 56:35Speaker 3: the people who are responding to the sound are. They
- 56:39Speaker 3: get it. Most creatives really do believe in something higher.
- 56:43Speaker 3: You cannot walk this no blueprint journey without it. And so...
- 56:49Speaker 3: When I'm hearing from my friends who are like, yeah,
- 56:51Speaker 3: I've been in my word and like, you know, it's
- 56:54Speaker 3: like the most beautiful thing. And so we do that.
- 56:56Speaker 3: We learn from creatives who are really working, who are
- 56:59Speaker 3: really doing it, who are really navigating this space and
- 57:01Speaker 3: having to hold their faith and let it fuel them
- 57:04Speaker 3: and what they want to share, like the lessons, because
- 57:07Speaker 3: that's the thing that we're all here to do. Like
- 57:10Speaker 3: it even says in the Bible and Proverbs, once you learn, teach.
- 57:13Speaker 3: You're supposed to share what you know. You're supposed to share.
- 57:17Speaker 3: We're all going to have to walk our own journey,
- 57:18Speaker 3: but at least you'll have a little bit of understanding
- 57:21Speaker 3: that's like, they said, don't go right there. So let
- 57:25Speaker 3: me go left. Or they said, this person is helpful.
- 57:28Speaker 3: So let me see if they would help me. Or
- 57:30Speaker 3: they said, this opportunity is growing. Let me see if
- 57:33Speaker 3: this works. And so we're still learning and growing every day.
- 57:37Speaker 3: But it's the most beautiful and toughest and most amazing
- 57:41Speaker 3: thing God has allowed me to do thus far.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Wow.
- 57:44Speaker 3: But it is, it's stretching me. Like, it's like when
- 57:47Speaker 3: God gives you something, it's going to build whatever you
- 57:52Speaker 3: need to build inside of you, whatever God needs for
- 57:54Speaker 3: you to develop so that you can sustain it. And
- 57:57Speaker 3: that building, that stretching, sister, it's uncomfortable.
- 58:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:03Speaker 3: But I'm like, but if it's God's will, then who
- 58:07Speaker 3: am I to like stand in the way of it?
- 58:09Speaker 3: And I have so many examples of people who show
- 58:12Speaker 3: up and do it. And so every day I'm looking
- 58:14Speaker 3: at you. I'm looking at Lovey. I'm looking at Jovi,
- 58:18Speaker 3: who's got Soft Landings coming out. I'm looking at Sarah
- 58:22Speaker 3: Jakes Roberts. I'm looking at Trey. I'm looking at Brenda.
- 58:24Speaker 3: I'm looking at Imani. I'm looking at all of my
- 58:26Speaker 3: friends who are like, this is my work.
- 58:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:31Speaker 3: I get to do this work.
- 58:32Speaker 1: I get to.
- 58:33Speaker 3: I get to do this work.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:38Speaker 3: It's crazy. That was long, but yeah.
- 58:43Speaker 2: It was powerful.
- 58:54Speaker 1: By saying yes, by being stretched as you go, What
- 59:00Speaker 1: does that feel like?
- 59:04Speaker 3: I think one of the things that I think God
- 59:07Speaker 3: wants for all of us now. is to stop identifying
- 59:11Speaker 3: ourselves by titles girl and stop clinging so hard to.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Stop making everything your identity.
- 59:19Speaker 3: Everything is not your identity and I think God especially
- 59:23Speaker 3: for black women because we have been so targeted in
- 59:27Speaker 3: this season the 600,000 folks who are out of work swiftly.
- 59:33Speaker 3: The folks who were backbones of their community, who were
- 59:35Speaker 3: driving Benz's one day and in the food line the
- 59:38Speaker 3: next month. Like it's not even a, it's not even
- 59:40Speaker 3: a joke being in from the DMV where like a
- 59:43Speaker 3: lot of the, the middle class, upper middle class that
- 59:45Speaker 3: we know of as PG County and surrounding areas in Maryland,
- 59:48Speaker 3: Virginia that had DC government jobs for 20 to 30
- 59:51Speaker 3: years that built the black middle class and upper middle
- 59:54Speaker 3: class in the DMV. Those folks, families who had jobs
- 59:58Speaker 3: for 20, 30 years, job security gone. Wow.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Targeted.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Targeted. And so when I, when I look at it
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: from a different lane, I'm like, that had nothing to
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: do with what God intended for us to always be.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: And I think we get comfortable sometimes. And so I
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: think in this moment, it's like, okay, I gave you
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: all that time to stretch those skills. You built that
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: person's $ 500 million company. Take those skills and build what
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: you really wanted to build the whole time. If you
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: can get out your way, if that grief that you
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: got to move with, because if you got to figure
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: it out, do what you have to do. But like,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: there's still so much beauty in the fact that you
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: were able to build stuff for others that now you
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: have the chance to build for yourself. You're able to
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: return to dreams, return to things that you might not
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: have done because it just didn't give you the time
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: you needed to invest. And I think God is calling
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: us to fully place our identities back in him. And
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: so it feels uncomfortable. I've lost more than I've gained
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: in the last... That's not true. I've lost things that
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: I identified my success on.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: In the past two years that are all external.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: I've had to watch people, you know, do amazing things
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: and things that I even prayed to do and be like, dang, well,
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: I guess it's not going to happen like that right now.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: And that's all right. Yeah. And then at the end
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: of the day, I've learned to be like, I've tried
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: it my way. And I had to sit with the grief.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: Like for my birthday this year, I really grieved. I
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: didn't want to do anything for my birthday. All my
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: best friends like, no, I'm a last minute birthday girly.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: And this year I was like, girl, don't even worry
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: about it. I ain't doing nothing. I don't want to
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: do anything. If it had not been for my sister
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: and my best friend, I would not have done anything
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: just because it just was so much grief. I was
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: just like, I am 36. I thought at this point
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: I would have a kid, a husband, a good house,
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: a nice little everything. I wanted to be a little
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: more comfortable, a little bit more established. Like all these
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: things that I had worked for. these industries don't even
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: exist in the way that I wanted to exist in.
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: These jobs that I wanted, E! News, Access Hollywood are gone.
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: So I really had to sit with that grief of
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: letting it go where it needs to go while also
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: trusting where God is. Because had I not had Craves
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: of Faith at this point, I don't know what that
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: birthday would have been like. So I just gave myself
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: time to feel it. I was like, feel sad because
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: some of these things are not going to happen in
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: the way that you want it to. But then also
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: remember that the God that created you created your path.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: And this is an infinite God. So if you say
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: you serve an infinite God under an open heaven, then
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: why would he just have one dream for you?
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: God.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: Why?
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: That part.
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: Why would he just have one dream for you?
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: That part.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: So I was just like.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: And God's dream is never a man-made title. No. A
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: man-made career that's only existed for X amount of years
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: on earth. None of that clocks with God.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: And everything... We know this because we've lived it. Everything
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: that we think looks shiny and good is always... somebody's
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: thorn is always somebody's hard thing.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: And everything about life is.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: That is why we have to stop pedestaling and idealizing
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: because doing that to people, places, things in general, it's
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: just self-avoidance.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: It's just self-avoidance. We don't even know what they are
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: carrying to have to do that.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: And even if they're carrying absolutely nothing, the projection itself
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: is still self-avoidance.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: This quote that.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: People say that I hate, I think it's ridiculous. It's
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: like people say, you know, like, well, actually kind of
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: like that. It's leaving me right now. But, you know,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: kind of like, oh, don't, you know, don't look over
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: there because they may hate their life or, or grass. Yeah,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: it's not. And it's like, you're still looking for a
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: default that places you in a hierarchy. You're either frustrated
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: because the person's above you or you're trying to feel
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: better about yourself by imagining that in some way they're beneath.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: You, even if it's emotional.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: It's still outsourcing your worth in some capacity and then
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: trying to feel better about yourself by imagining someone else
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: is grappling with problems.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: We all have problems.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Congrats.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Everybody.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Everybody.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: Everybody.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: And sometimes their life is great.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: And you're envious for the reasons you're envious.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Right. But it's like looking, it's still looking for someone
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: else either to win or fail to make real the
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: belief or the limiting thought you're holding about yourself. And
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: it's like we, to extract worth from identity or title
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: from worth and identity, you got to get rid of
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: all of it. All of it. Including the desire to say, well,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: maybe I don't have this because.
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: The person that.
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: You don't have it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: You don't have it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: You don't have it. And that is okay.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: And it's like, when we say things like your will,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: not mine, Lord, that's what that is.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: And that's what this year has taught me.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: Sorry, I got loud.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: No. Because sometimes you got to clap and let people know. No,
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: that's when you mean it for real.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: But I think that's the beauty. That's the beauty of loss.
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: Like it reminds you of what really matters. When you
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: really look around, and I say this with hope in
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: my heart and love for the journey, but when I
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: really started to look around at what I thought I
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: needed and it was no longer there and I removed
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: the value and placed it back on the things that
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: are intangible, like my mental health, my peace, my understanding
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: of who I am, my ability to figure things out
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: my mornings where I can wake up and pray and
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: meditate in the mornings where I don't like the mornings
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: are beautiful for me. I have learned to look up
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: at the sky and feel grateful if I see the
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: sun or not. Like I have learned to really understand
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: that this, these things, these accoutrements are amazing, but like, who,
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: who are you? What do you want? And so that moment, these,
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: These things that were grieving, I've learned to be like,
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: was it me?
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: You know what's so interesting?
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Like, even the dream of, like, a thought that came
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: to me as you were sharing, like, even the dream of, like,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: you know, the art titans of the time, right? Like,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: in Access Hollywood.
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: An e-network, right?
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: Would you have even been able to prioritize God if
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: you were the e-host?
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: Who knows? Right?
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Right? Like what would you then have been wrapped up
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: in and how would your time have been taken from you?
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: And what are the rooms you would have been in
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: where you, it would have changed form, whatever that like,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: you know, measuring was.
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: It's like none of this stuff, none of this stuff is,
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: easy and it takes all of you like we've known
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: we've had friends that have worked there and they're like
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: girl i couldn't do nothing else like that was it that.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: Was it yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: Or it was great and it was everything or it
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: was a horrible experience and so i i in the
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: midst of putting things down i've given myself space to
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: pick things up that actually matter and now i can
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: hold them because i'm not worried about things that don't
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: that aren't there Like I think some of us now
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: have to do the work of letting things go. And
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: if that looks like grieving, do that.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: And so many women of so many, like in the
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: retreat and kind of like healing space work that I do,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I found that that it's something for all of us generationally, right?
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Because like I've.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Worked with some women who are, you know, in their eldership,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: like they're women in their 60s, right? 70s. And they're
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: grieving that because of the time and the era that
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: they were young women in, they didn't get to go
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: after purpose like any of us.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: Are we crazy?
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Like you used to hear about one to two in
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: the nation, women that were quote unquote.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: Bosses or like- Yeah.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Literally. Or like, you know, a business woman that owns
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: some kind of a company that did something that was
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: able to rise to the top. And it's like, there
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: is a real grief for the boomer generation, for the
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: dynamic women of those times that couldn't be their full selves.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: And so much couldn't be expressed. And the generation before that,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: and then for ours, and then for Gen Z. We
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: all have our unique grievance about the limitations of our times.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: But to your point, and I think what you're sharing
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: really powerfully on this show, it's just letting ourselves... like
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: look at those pieces, ask ourself, is that actually true?
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. And then saying, whatever
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: it is, I am resilient, I'm adaptable, I am brilliant, right?
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Like whatever I'm changing form into. And like, I just,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: I resonate with so much. And I think something, and
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: I haven't even shared this story with really anybody, definitely
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: not on this show, but I'm gonna condense it. I
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: was thinking about recently, Gia.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: Like.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: For so many of us, right? But then some, you know,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: all of us have our unique reasons, but like Oprah
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Winfrey is the queen of my heart.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Right, right. Girl, this can moment, sister.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Oprah Winfrey is the queen of my heart. Miss Winfrey
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: changed so many of our lives. In such a multitude
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: of ways, right? And I know that there's so many
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: people that see one, you see... like who and what
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: she is and has accomplished as a woman, as a
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: black woman, as a child of adverse childhood experiences, what
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: she moved through, right, to be the absolute highest level
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: of best to ever do it that's ever been, right?
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: So there's that. There's the whole excellence piece.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: There is the, you know, incredible like billionaire piece. There
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: is like the global icon piece. Then there's also the
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: piece that like this is the gorgeous soul that taught
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: me life lessons I didn't get anywhere else because of
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: the way my childhood and life was set up, right?
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: Like this is the woman that made me not ashamed
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: of my own trauma and helped me see worth in
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: myself because she was being her unique full self in
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: front of people, right? There's so many, so many angles
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: of how she's gifted this world, this earth. Consciousness, love, expansion.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: So the version of me, right, that was working in media,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: that was a young veteran, right, that like existed and
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: accomplished in.
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: The ages that predate social media.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: That version of me, you know, 20 years ago, I
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: slept outside on the ground for an opportunity to audition
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: for something she was doing, right? didn't get it, never
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: got a call back.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: Right. Like, okay, you keep going.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Right. Like my whole life told me there was something
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: that was yet to be revealed or expressed. Right. Like
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: that there was meant to be something 20.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: Well, 40 years. I felt that right.
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: Like I'm very patient with my life. Like that is
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: one of my greatest, um, one of the things I've
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: enjoyed in being myself is that I have a lot
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: of patience and I don't need.
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: Success or life or those things to be fast.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Like I, I, I'm a be a hundred before I
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: leave this place. I got a lot to give in
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: a lot of ways. So over the years, many different ways, right?
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Like been in the same room a couple of times,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: you know, like been able to be in the audience
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: of various things and you're just like, wow, and amazing. And,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Every time I've told myself, this is more than enough.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: This is enough. It doesn't have to be that I
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: am the next because that's what the whole generation, millions
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: of women feel like. Thousands, hundreds of thousands feel like
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be next. You don't need to be next.
- 1:12:58Speaker 3: You are.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: Her life allowed that there doesn't need to be.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: One that comes because she existed and millions are able
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: to be more because she existed. That is enough.
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: So to be able.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: To shoot forward after all these years since young childhood, right,
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: to then be in Cannes and have this moment sitting
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: on stage with her on the rooftop of the Carlton
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: Hotel in the south of France. In the south of France.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: And have an event where I knew I was being used,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: that it definitely wasn't about me trying to impress the
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: audience or even impress her.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: It was me serving.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: And that, I was like, oh, God, I get to
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: be devoted to a being that gave me so much.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: And ask for nothing from me.
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: And I get to serve in that capacity on stage.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: So to bring all of that to life on the stage, right,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: for the room to erupt in tears, for Oprah to cry.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Like the first thing she said when she got on
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: stage was.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: You keep making me cry.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: You're making me cry.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: You know, and it's like, this is like what we're
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: saying in this whole episode. Like when we're saying things like,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: let the way the dream has to, to come to life,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: change form. Let it be in divine timing.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: Let it be God.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Let it be in trust.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: And also, whatever happens, not only is it more than enough,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: it's incredible. It's awe-inspiring.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: It doesn't have to mean that I have.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: My own TV show on the own network For the fullness.
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: Though it could happen, I can see it.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: So many things could happen, you know, but everything that's
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: happened is more than enough.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I'm owed nothing by God. I'm owed nothing by Ms. Winfrey.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: I'm owed nothing by anyone. Everything is more than I
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: could have ever imagined. So good. You know, and it's
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: just like, that's the part that when we say like,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: let go. Mm-hmm. Release the grip of the way you
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: think it has to be. And really let it come
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: to life and stop thinking that that's the one thing
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: that's gonna make you you. I'm in a whole different industry.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: That conversation, that moment didn't happen because I was still
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: in entertainment and I was still pursuing this traditional kind
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: of way of being myself and being a communicator. It
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: came 10 years after I retired from entertainment. decade. I
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: left entertainment 10 years ago next month.
- 1:15:56Speaker 3: Yeah. Wow.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Beautiful.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: We have space and room.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: And when we stop judging everything about what it means
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: we are, or how tall we get to stand somewhere
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: because of, or how we're being perceived, or even how
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: much we're making, as long as we are making enough
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: to survive because we all deserve the dignity of that.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: But it's like, let the dream grow and change form
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: and be unknown to you. That is like God's will,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: not yours. Like being in the unknown and it not
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: being quantifiable yet.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: Yes. I loved watching- all of the feedback from the room.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: I loved watching the moments where it was just you
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: and her. And like, it felt like, I don't know
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: who was filming, but they got great shots of just
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: you and her. And it was so special to watch
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: that sacred exchange. You talked about what we do, but
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: it was sacred. And I feel like she was getting
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: what she needed from you. And it was this circular
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: moment of the things, the seeds that she planted that
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: fell on good soil. And then you growing up into
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: this tree and offering her shade in a world that's
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: not always kind to her. I'm sure she needed to
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: feel that. held in the way that you were able
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: to hold her in the room, in the space.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: What an honor.
- 1:17:25Speaker 3: You are often holding space for a lot of people.
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: but I know how special it must feel for the
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: dream to still come true, even though it didn't look
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: like what you originally imagined. It's better than I could
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: have imagined.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: And that's where it comes to. And it doesn't have to.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: Last forever too. That's the thing that we have to realize.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: Even for the dream to be realized, it doesn't mean
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: it has to be permanent. Yes.
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: And it's like, God, this is in the word, exceedingly, abundantly,
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: above all, more than we can ask or think. Like
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: that's what we have in God as we surrender to
- 1:18:06Speaker 3: the will that he wants for our lives. And so
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: if the uncomfortability is what costs me to get to
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: surrender in his will, then it just has to cost that.
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: And it's going to build what it needs to build.
- 1:18:17Speaker 3: And it's going to be uncomfortable. And I'm going to
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: be like, yuck, Lord, really another mess. But I've seen
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: glory on the other side of the uncomfortability so many times,
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: which is why it's so important that we share our stories.
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: Because it's too many people that give up because it's uncomfortable.
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: Because we have to look like beginners. Because we're not
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: used to being in these spaces. Because somebody doesn't quite
- 1:18:39Speaker 3: get it for you. Who cares if somebody gets it?
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: Do you get it? Did you get it from God?
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: Then like you have to go and and and I
- 1:18:48Speaker 3: think the beautiful part about your story is that like
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: God will still give you the desires of your heart
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: when you follow him in place, whatever it is that
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: you're defining yourself by to the wayside. So you can
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: get to the life that he has for you. Like
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: the original thought, the one, like, I'm always like, God,
- 1:19:05Speaker 3: how can I, am I becoming more like what you
- 1:19:08Speaker 3: thought when you created me? Like looking back at the
- 1:19:11Speaker 3: threads and the through lines, like there's so many things
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: I have to get back to that are going to
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: be uncomfortable. And like, You know, I grew up singing,
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: dancing and acting and all that stuff. And so it's
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: like this, this building creators of faith is one thing.
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: But I also have to build the courage to like
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: go back out and share and explore these gifts again.
- 1:19:28Speaker 3: And I don't know what it's going to be. I
- 1:19:29Speaker 3: might just be doing like local theater, but I would
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: love to do that. I would love to go back. And, and,
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: and when I get to heaven, God be like, girl,
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: you really did everything, huh? You just didn't, you just.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: You didn't leave nothing on that table.
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: That's what I'm trying to do. And so it's like
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: at the end of the day, if I have to
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: build this space on the way to that, if I
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: have to find the rhythm, if I have to like
- 1:19:55Speaker 3: get in this like mental gym where I build new
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: neuro pathways for myself to see myself differently and show
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: up as her more, I just got to do the work.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: It's hard and yuck, but it's going to be great.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: It is effortful, but it is why we're here.
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: Like, what is the point of being alive on earth
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: if not all of this?
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: Oh, Chia.
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: I love this. Yeah.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: At the end of every episode, I love to extend
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: to each guest. to offer a piece of soul work
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: for the audience. So this can be a practice. This
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: can be a quote, a thought starter, a journal prompt,
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: absolutely anything to just really spend time with and integrate
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: everything that was said.
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: I love this. The thing that I've been really sitting
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: with lately is like a lion is a lion, whether
- 1:20:55Speaker 3: they're in a zoo, a jungle, or somebody's backyard. You're
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: going to be what you are, wherever you are. What
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: are the parts of you that you haven't let roar?
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: What are the parts of you that you decided had
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: to shrink because of your environment? What are the parts
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: of you that you've seen come out everywhere you are
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: and that make you special? And what are the parts
- 1:21:20Speaker 3: of you that are making you a little dangerous? Like lions?
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: Lions might... They can hurt some folks too. They leave
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: the jungle for a reason though. They have the capacity.
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: A lion is a lion wherever you place a lion.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: When we look at this moment where we're being offered
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: this opportunity to rebuild, you are you wherever they place you.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: Where do you want to be though? What do you
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: want to say? How can you take that with you?
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: What is the you that you are developing and pushing
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: through that has the applied lessons that you learned from
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: the last 20 years or 30 years or wherever you
- 1:22:00Speaker 3: were serving or the last five years. Because there's young
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: college grads that come up to me all the time
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: and they're like, I can't be an influencer and a
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: journalist and an editor and a podcast. I'm like, baby,
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: same girl. I don't know. But you are you. There's
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: something special about you. And you're going to be you
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: wherever you go. And sometimes it's the environment that tells
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: you the special things.
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Hopefully.
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: Sometimes it's not that. But try to be around folks
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: that remind you of the special things that if you
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: can't quite see it for yourself, who are you in
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: every environment and how can you maximize on that? Even
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: in this season where opportunities might not be as abundant
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: as before, they'll be abundant again. But who are you
- 1:22:40Speaker 3: going to be next time because you've taken this time,
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: this non-accidental, this intentional time? to show up and cultivate
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: the best parts of you. Because you're still a lion.
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: If you take a lion out of a jungle, it's
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: still going to be a lion. So don't ever think
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: that you have to feel that you are no longer
- 1:23:00Speaker 3: who you are because your job title was taken or
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: because your show got canceled. More than that got canceled.
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: That was one of the first things to go because
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: we were a DEI show. So that whole arm got
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: let go. But thank God we went out swinging. But
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: I tell people all the time, I'm still an amazing host, producer,
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: and creative. Where that takes me next, who knows? You're
- 1:23:26Speaker 3: still who you are. Who do you want to make
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: sure that that, what are you protecting in this season
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: and what are you cultivating and how are you taking
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: that to your next?
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, that's good. That is good.
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: That's the work that I've been trying to do.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: A lion is a lion.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: A lion is a lion. Like you can. That is
- 1:23:45Speaker 3: a reason why I'm like, I'm like, I love celebrations
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: online of the, you know, black women are the fastest
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: growing entrepreneurship and the fastest. And all those things that
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: we were celebrating over the last several years. I'm like,
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: they'd studied that. And they were like, oh, cool. We'll
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: pull the plug on all of that. Now it's about us,
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: and we need to be a little bit more communal.
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: We need to be offline, congratulating each other. Hush.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: Hush. Hush it. Right on the creek.
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: We got to rebuild this.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: And it's not going to be based on anything else
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: other than the fact that you can take the jobs.
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: You can't take the talent.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: You can't take the gifts. It's so much bigger than
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: any system administration. Baby, God gave us these gifts. So
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: tap back in and use them. Align is going to
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: be aligned. If God made you align, you're aligned.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Girl, mic drop.
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: We did it again.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: We did it again.
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: I love you.
