Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: Can Hurts' Rising Interception Total Be An Encouraging Sign For Eagles Offense?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on, everybody? It's
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher. It's Adam Kaplan. And we're inching toward the
- 0:18Speaker 1: final preseason game here. It is going to be against
- 0:22Speaker 1: the Bengals. And that's Friday night. So we've got a
- 0:27Speaker 1: practice that the Eagles had Monday and, of course, the
- 0:29Speaker 1: open practice Tuesday that Adam and I were at each. Adam,
- 0:34Speaker 1: you were at the open practice. I was at the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Monday practice. And we're going to really go through where
- 0:38Speaker 1: things stand with the Eagles after these, you know, a
- 0:42Speaker 1: couple of preseason games, a couple more practices, open practice.
- 0:44Speaker 1: First of all, 45,000 at the link for open practice. About,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I mean, let's say the Eagles are exaggerating. Let's say
- 0:52Speaker 1: it was 41. Still pretty good.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so most of the lower ball was filled. Upstairs,
- 0:57Speaker 2: second level, very sparse, very little.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But being on the field for warm-ups and when James
- 1:04Speaker 2: Spadaro was doing the PA announcing. It was super loud.
- 1:09Speaker 2: They were loud as hell. It's pretty cool. You know,
- 1:11Speaker 2: I would imagine for the players, especially the rookies to
- 1:15Speaker 2: hear it. Yeah, it was, uh, weather turned out to
- 1:18Speaker 2: be good. It was a very odd afternoon where it
- 1:20Speaker 2: was overcast, but didn't rain. Then it got nice and
- 1:24Speaker 2: cool at night and they got a lot of work.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And yeah, so today's show, the purpose is where do
- 1:28Speaker 2: things stand throughout training camp, throughout the OTAs? Where do
- 1:31Speaker 2: they stand right now? We'll give that to you. Like
- 1:34Speaker 2: we can. Yep. They learn a lot. It's actually been
- 1:37Speaker 2: because we had our pre-training camp question show, right? A
- 1:41Speaker 2: lot of it's been answered. Mostly good, by the way.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Some are you have to see because you don't know
- 1:48Speaker 2: or because of Lemon's injuries, injury, the re-injury of this hamstring.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:54Speaker 2: We have some good stuff from the Tuesday night practice
- 1:56Speaker 2: that I noted. And certainly also with Sean Mannion, we
- 2:01Speaker 2: haven't talked about him enough about what we've seen and
- 2:03Speaker 2: what we know, what we've heard. we're going to give
- 2:06Speaker 2: you a little bit more intel on what this thing's
- 2:08Speaker 2: going to look like, or at least should look like
- 2:10Speaker 2: in the regular season.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Well, let's start with him and the quarterback position overall. Obviously,
- 2:15Speaker 1: there's a big marriage and an importance between the offensive
- 2:17Speaker 1: coordinator and the QB play. On Monday's practice, Adam, it
- 2:22Speaker 1: was very short. It was only an hour because they
- 2:25Speaker 1: weren't going to have a big, heavy practice before the
- 2:28Speaker 1: open practice. They were in shorts and shells, and it
- 2:31Speaker 1: was really choppy for the offense, first-team offense. I don't
- 2:35Speaker 1: think there weren't any interceptions. I know we'll talk about that,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but there just weren't a lot of completions. There was
- 2:42Speaker 1: a ton of motion, though. And Makai Lemon coming back,
- 2:46Speaker 1: it almost felt to me like they were trying to
- 2:47Speaker 1: cram three weeks of him being out into a session
- 2:51Speaker 1: there because there was probably more pre-snap motion than I've
- 2:55Speaker 1: seen in most other practices. So they're clearly trying to
- 2:59Speaker 1: get up to speed. He's going to be that guy
- 3:01Speaker 1: in this offense that you really need, that movable piece.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But the quarterback play, the receiver play, it just didn't
- 3:08Speaker 1: look yet quite in sync because that was the first
- 3:10Speaker 1: time that Devontae Smith and Lemon had practiced since August 3rd.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So since that point, Jalen Hurts has been working with
- 3:17Speaker 1: guys who, backups who have had their moments, but not
- 3:20Speaker 1: the starters.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, so really overall with Lemon, as I saw on
- 3:24Speaker 2: Tuesday night's practice, this is not a static offense. This
- 3:29Speaker 2: is something, again, we haven't seen since Doug Peterson was fired.
- 3:33Speaker 2: where they would do certain things, try certain things. Remember,
- 3:36Speaker 2: they brought in Rich Scangarello from the Shanahan tree. And unfortunately,
- 3:40Speaker 2: all that stuff didn't work. It was Doug, whether he
- 3:44Speaker 2: wanted to do it or not, it was kind of like, okay,
- 3:46Speaker 2: we need to be different and so forth. That was
- 3:48Speaker 2: six years ago, six years ago, 2020, six seasons ago.
- 3:52Speaker 2: And it seems like just like yesterday. But moving forward now,
- 3:55Speaker 2: this is not static. There's a lot of motion. In fact,
- 3:58Speaker 2: with Lemon, who you mentioned, and I agree with your
- 4:00Speaker 2: assessment from what you saw on Monday's practice, They're doing
- 4:04Speaker 2: a ton with him now that he's healthy. And he clearly,
- 4:06Speaker 2: he looks in and out of his breaks. They ran
- 4:08Speaker 2: a reverse orbit motion into a burst. Like he did
- 4:12Speaker 2: the orbit and then he reversed. And then he stopped suddenly,
- 4:17Speaker 2: just like for a split second. And then once it
- 4:21Speaker 2: was right about to snap, he burst to the right.
- 4:23Speaker 2: The ball didn't even go to him. It was just interesting.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know, there's a lot of that. We've seen it
- 4:29Speaker 2: throughout training camp, a lot of motion pre-snap. A post-snap,
- 4:34Speaker 2: some interesting stuff. What I'm interested to see, though, is
- 4:37Speaker 2: Goddard's role in terms of what do they do with
- 4:41Speaker 2: him in this offense? Because the passing coordinator came from Tampa,
- 4:48Speaker 2: and I'm interested to see how they combine what Mannion
- 4:51Speaker 2: likes and the passing game coordinator likes. We don't really
- 4:54Speaker 2: know that. We're not going to know until the regular season,
- 4:57Speaker 2: but what we do know on West Coast, tight ends
- 4:59Speaker 2: are very involved. I'm interested to see what Goddard does
- 5:02Speaker 2: that he hasn't done before, if anything.
- 5:05Speaker 1: What did you make of Hurts? I would say through
- 5:10Speaker 1: all the practices we've seen together, I wouldn't say he's
- 5:13Speaker 1: had a great camp. I don't think he's had a
- 5:15Speaker 1: terrible camp. I don't know how to reconcile the interceptions.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I'm not worried about it.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm not worried about it either. This is going to
- 5:25Speaker 1: sound weird. I don't think it's a good thing to
- 5:27Speaker 1: have interceptions, but you know, last year, Sam Donald threw
- 5:30Speaker 1: 14 interceptions, right? Which is, would be like twice as
- 5:33Speaker 1: much as what hurts normally throws, but he also threw
- 5:36Speaker 1: for 4,000 yards, 28 touchdowns. And because he threw interceptions,
- 5:39Speaker 1: he also took risks and drove the ball and really
- 5:42Speaker 1: came into his own. Now he wasn't a top five quarterback,
- 5:45Speaker 1: Sam Donald. He was, and their offense in general, Seattle's was,
- 5:49Speaker 1: if you look at like EPA metrics and, you know, analytics,
- 5:53Speaker 1: it was like 12, 13, 14, but you would take
- 5:55Speaker 1: that from the Eagles. Um, from a passing offense standpoint.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You're hoping the running game really comes back and is
- 6:02Speaker 1: the bell cow. So I guess what I'm saying is, Adam,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you'd have to look at every interception individually and say,
- 6:10Speaker 1: was this the result of at least trying to drive
- 6:12Speaker 1: the ball or do something positive and you'll take a
- 6:15Speaker 1: few more of that? Or were some of them sloppy?
- 6:18Speaker 1: I know in the night there was probably one that
- 6:22Speaker 1: was not a great one because he left it. right there. Well,
- 6:25Speaker 1: he was late. He was late.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Right. And we'll have had a couple of picks, which
- 6:29Speaker 2: we'll talk about. But what I want is I want
- 6:34Speaker 2: him to drive the football. If I'm the coaches, don't
- 6:36Speaker 2: worry about it. We can't this risk averse shit. Excuse
- 6:39Speaker 2: my language, but that's gone. Like that's unacceptable. Right. With
- 6:42Speaker 2: a coach than what they allowed him to do. And
- 6:44Speaker 2: not like they, they were so conservative with the game
- 6:48Speaker 2: plan with Hertz. And I understand he wasn't throwing the
- 6:51Speaker 2: ball in time. That's confirmed by tape, nothing else. So
- 6:53Speaker 2: that's the way it was. I saw plenty of him
- 6:57Speaker 2: getting the ball, getting out of his hands on time. Yes,
- 7:01Speaker 2: I saw him hold on to it. So did Dalton
- 7:03Speaker 2: and McKay. Andy's not new to West Coast, but he's
- 7:07Speaker 2: new to this specific offense. McKay has come along the
- 7:10Speaker 2: last week a lot. He threw a pass. Now, I
- 7:15Speaker 2: watched it. They had a view of it. At first,
- 7:19Speaker 2: I thought Ringo got his hands on it. Not from
- 7:21Speaker 2: the second view I saw. It was, I believe, a
- 7:23Speaker 2: two-point conversion. McKee, only McKee, like Andy Dalton's not making
- 7:28Speaker 2: this throw. Hurts can do it. Definitely can. I've seen
- 7:31Speaker 2: him do it. And McKee, he just rifled it up
- 7:35Speaker 2: to Hollywood in the back of the end zone. And remember,
- 7:40Speaker 2: McKee and Hollywood hooked up big time.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Against the Patriots in practices. And it was just, you
- 7:47Speaker 2: want to see that decisiveness is what you want from
- 7:49Speaker 2: these quarterbacks to expand what you're talking about.
- 7:52Speaker 1: For sure.
- 7:52Speaker 2: That's what you want. I'm not worried about the picks.
- 7:55Speaker 2: If he makes the right throw and maybe it's a
- 7:58Speaker 2: shade late, okay, maybe it gets deflected, okay, you can
- 8:01Speaker 2: correct that stuff. But it's holding on to the ball
- 8:05Speaker 2: and then running to the right and running out of
- 8:07Speaker 2: bounds where the fans who don't understand football are blaming
- 8:10Speaker 2: the coaches. It has nothing to do with the coach.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's on the quarterback. Throw the ball on time. Whoever
- 8:15Speaker 2: the quarterback is in the game, run it like it's
- 8:17Speaker 2: supposed to be done. And if the receiver drops it,
- 8:22Speaker 2: That's on them. If the receiver's late on the route,
- 8:25Speaker 2: if Jalen puts it out there on time and the
- 8:27Speaker 2: guy's late, that's on them. Drake May, last Wednesday, first
- 8:32Speaker 2: practice where he burned specifically Woolen left and right. The
- 8:37Speaker 2: ball was out a quarter into the route. It was unreal.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Poor Woolen. I'm with the guy. What am I supposed
- 8:44Speaker 2: to do? He just got it there and he beat
- 8:45Speaker 2: me to the spot. That's what you want, timing. This
- 8:48Speaker 2: is what this offense is.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Agreed. If you were to, if you were to ask
- 8:51Speaker 1: me what my biggest concern would be based on camp
- 8:53Speaker 1: that I'm not afraid to extrapolate, it would just be,
- 8:57Speaker 1: it would not be the interceptions. It would just be,
- 9:00Speaker 1: I just feel like I've seen him running a little
- 9:05Speaker 1: bit more than I would expect in like seven on
- 9:07Speaker 1: sevens and even in the team drills and still trying
- 9:11Speaker 1: to get that rhythm of balls out, balls out, balls out.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 9:17Speaker 1: I'm not– I'm like– I'm exactly with you. I'm not
- 9:19Speaker 1: as concerned with the picks. I wouldn't even call it
- 9:22Speaker 1: a concern because I expected this offense to take some time,
- 9:27Speaker 1: but I think early on we are going to see
- 9:29Speaker 1: a little bit of the harmony just not there the
- 9:32Speaker 1: way it's supposed to be as he continues to learn
- 9:34Speaker 1: this offense and how the ball is supposed to come
- 9:37Speaker 1: out with the timing of his step and the route.
- 9:40Speaker 1: So that's it. But that's going to take time.
- 9:43Speaker 2: One more thing before we move on to running backs.
- 9:44Speaker 2: What I've seen a lot, and I saw it last
- 9:46Speaker 2: week and I saw it in Tuesday night's practice, a
- 9:49Speaker 2: ton of shallow crosses to get the ball out of
- 9:50Speaker 2: the hand of the quarterback. That's good coaching. This is
- 9:52Speaker 2: what I call openers.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Play callers. Get the quarterbacks comfortable. Get them in rhythm.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:59Speaker 2: And get them confident. Start off with easy throws. Yes.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Okay?
- 10:04Speaker 2: They had Wicks on a shallow.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Okay?
- 10:07Speaker 2: No one even remotely close to Wicks. He just crossed.
- 10:10Speaker 2: He crossed the formation. Jalen put it here. Completion. That's
- 10:14Speaker 2: what you want. And I also felt during the preseason
- 10:18Speaker 2: game last Saturday in New England, that Manion did a
- 10:22Speaker 2: really good job of making the quarterbacks comfortable early. I
- 10:27Speaker 2: know that a lot of McKee's passes were dump-offs, screens,
- 10:32Speaker 2: short area, a couple longer, but that's coaching. That's what
- 10:37Speaker 2: you've got to do. It's your job to help the quarterbacks.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Agreed, agreed. The layups, we call them. Take the layups
- 10:43Speaker 1: when they're there. That's just my big curiosity is will
- 10:46Speaker 1: Jalen– take the layups that are there that sometimes, even
- 10:50Speaker 1: many times, he has not in the past, and then
- 10:52Speaker 1: you see him kind of floating around and wondering what's going.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Through his head there. Real quick, his predecessor, Wentz, was
- 10:59Speaker 2: the same way. Because Wentz wants to throw the ball downfield,
- 11:02Speaker 2: so does Jalen. Right. And sometimes on your point, where the...
- 11:09Speaker 2: He doesn't like dumping the ball off. Wentz was the
- 11:11Speaker 2: same way, okay? He just doesn't like doing it. But
- 11:15Speaker 2: as we've seen as we transition to running back, You
- 11:18Speaker 2: see the screens. Now, there was a play to Barkley.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I know some people thought it was a wheel. I'm
- 11:23Speaker 2: not totally sure it was. But it was a great throw.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Only where Barkley can get it. Barkley made a great
- 11:29Speaker 2: adjustment on it. You're looking to expand the passing game
- 11:35Speaker 2: to other positions other than receiver and tight end. And
- 11:37Speaker 2: there's a way to do it, the running backs. I mean,
- 11:39Speaker 2: Roger Craig in the West Coast made the Hall of
- 11:41Speaker 2: Fame with it. Yeah. I mean, that's what you do.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Joe Banner told me years ago. When he goes president,
- 11:48Speaker 2: the best matchup on offense is running backs on linebackers.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It's absolute money. The linebackers are typically not as fast.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And he doesn't move like the running back. Take advantage
- 12:01Speaker 2: of it.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I wonder if there was a little freelance involved there.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I saw the touchdown. Someone posted a video, had a
- 12:06Speaker 1: great view of it. And it did look like it
- 12:09Speaker 1: started off as a wheel, but because... Vaughn was on
- 12:12Speaker 1: the inside shoulder. It looked like he angled toward the corner.
- 12:15Speaker 1: So maybe there was some, which would be great, by
- 12:17Speaker 1: the way, if you give a running back sort of like,
- 12:20Speaker 1: just like with the receivers, a little bit of a
- 12:22Speaker 1: sight adjustment or a freelance to make a move, which
- 12:25Speaker 1: we haven't really seen a lot from the running backs
- 12:27Speaker 1: in this offense past, that would be great. And I
- 12:30Speaker 1: did notice, I think, I forget who I said this to.
- 12:33Speaker 1: It was either our practice or something I was watching
- 12:36Speaker 1: where Saquon ran a Texas route and caught the ball
- 12:40Speaker 1: over the middle. You know, the old go back out,
- 12:42Speaker 1: come back in. And I was like, wow, I haven't
- 12:45Speaker 1: seen an Eagles running back run a Texas route in
- 12:49Speaker 1: their offense in a while. And that got me excited about,
- 12:53Speaker 1: you know, along the lines of what we're talking about.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Maybe there's some additional, not only just screens, which is
- 12:59Speaker 1: great to see, but also some additional. route emphasis for
- 13:03Speaker 1: running backs that might be a part of this offense
- 13:05Speaker 1: that we really just haven't seen in a lot. And,
- 13:06Speaker 1: you know, not in the Nick Sirianni.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So the bottom line is there's a lot
- 13:11Speaker 2: to this offense. Eagle fans have to be patient. It
- 13:16Speaker 2: could look ugly at times, the first three, four weeks.
- 13:18Speaker 2: I remember Bill Pauling telling me, Hall of Fame general manager,
- 13:21Speaker 2: the defense is it's four to six weeks. He thinks
- 13:24Speaker 2: the start of the season that the defense is usually
- 13:25Speaker 2: ahead or way ahead of offenses.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And now when you're installing a brand new scheme, now
- 13:31Speaker 2: Hurts was, believe it or not, on the West Coast
- 13:33Speaker 2: in 2020, but he wasn't the starter. You know, it
- 13:36Speaker 2: was Wentz. So at least he knows what it is,
- 13:40Speaker 2: but this is a work in progress. It's not going
- 13:43Speaker 2: to happen overnight, but it has a chance to be beautiful.
- 13:47Speaker 2: If Hurts does throw mostly on time at some point
- 13:49Speaker 2: in the season, you see what it looks like. Brock
- 13:53Speaker 2: Purdy's not very talented. Hurts is way more talented. Brock Purdy,
- 13:56Speaker 2: when he's on time, it's beautiful. and you don't have
- 14:00Speaker 2: to have great talent around you to look beautiful. Ask
- 14:02Speaker 2: the Eagles that when they play in the playoffs.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Hey, football season is coming up soon, and I know
- 14:06Speaker 1: that's going to be so many late nights for me.
- 14:09Speaker 1: You know how many times the Eagles are on prime time,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and I'm not going to be going to bed until after, well,
- 14:13Speaker 1: after midnight. And that means the next day, I can
- 14:16Speaker 1: probably count the number of cups of coffee I would
- 14:18Speaker 1: drink on two hands today. But not anymore. That's because
- 14:22Speaker 1: for a while now, I've been using ultra pouches. It
- 14:26Speaker 1: is instant focus in a pouch. These pouches are completely

- 15:35Speaker 1: birds sent I'm someone who really likes to wear jeans,
- 15:38Speaker 1: but it's becoming really, really hard these days to find
- 15:41Speaker 1: jeans that aren't tight fitting or restricting, especially for someone
- 15:45Speaker 1: who's active. I like to go to the gym. I'm
- 15:47Speaker 1: always out and about. Even when I'm not active and
- 15:50Speaker 1: I'm just sitting in a chair, you start to get
- 15:52Speaker 1: that feeling of being constricted and restrained. And I hate
- 15:55Speaker 1: that feeling. Perfect example. Last year, I did a fantasy
- 15:59Speaker 1: football draft. It took three hours. And I could just
- 16:02Speaker 1: feel myself moving around my chair, adjusting myself. But everything
- 16:06Speaker 1: changed when I found the perfect jean. It's a jean
- 16:10Speaker 1: that fits me just right. It doesn't pinch. It stretches nicely.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Here's what makes these genuinely different from other stretch jeans,
- 16:18Speaker 1: all right? They don't look like stretch jeans. They look
- 16:21Speaker 1: like sharp, classic denim. They're so polished that you can
- 16:24Speaker 1: go straight from like a tailgate parking lot Right to
- 16:28Speaker 1: a dinner reservation without anybody clocking you as that guy
- 16:31Speaker 1: who just spent four hours in a lot. I just
- 16:34Speaker 1: recently did another fantasy football draft and I wore the
- 16:37Speaker 1: perfect jean and I was just so comfortable. Look, these
- 16:40Speaker 1: things are flexible enough that you can actually move around
- 16:43Speaker 1: in them. You can bend to get that drink in
- 16:46Speaker 1: the cooler. You can sit in a chair for a
- 16:48Speaker 1: few hours. You can stand for the anthem at a

- 17:20Speaker 1: the wide receiver situation, here's what's interesting to me. With
- 17:24Speaker 1: Lemon coming back this week.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Real quick, Shipley, like, I hate to say he looks different,
- 17:29Speaker 2: but he's never run this physical. That was the biggest
- 17:32Speaker 2: knock coming out of Clemson because lower body wasn't built strong.
- 17:35Speaker 2: But I know people want to know, like, okay, Tank
- 17:40Speaker 2: Biggs beat backups. Because we keep being asked this question
- 17:43Speaker 2: when we do interviews. Okay, is Biggs going to get
- 17:45Speaker 2: the ball more than he did last season? I don't
- 17:49Speaker 2: know that. I would say three to five carries would
- 17:51Speaker 2: be nice. What I'd like to see, could you give
- 17:53Speaker 2: him a series? Is it so wrong to give him
- 17:56Speaker 2: a series without putting Barkley back in? Because they go,
- 18:01Speaker 2: Tank is killing it, and then they put Barkley in
- 18:03Speaker 2: for the second half of the series. That's the one
- 18:06Speaker 2: thing I'd like to see.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Oh, we've talked about that quite a bit. Can we
- 18:10Speaker 1: see that? Can we see a little more diversity among
- 18:12Speaker 1: the running backs?
- 18:13Speaker 2: I don't know. But Shipley looks good. That's a developing story.
- 18:16Speaker 2: That's a big story.
- 18:18Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's over. I mean, those are your three
- 18:19Speaker 1: running backs. Yeah, I mean, there's really nothing.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Shipley was never challenged.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I know there's this push for Carson Steele, and he's
- 18:26Speaker 1: playing well. I just don't know how they're going to
- 18:28Speaker 1: keep four. I know they want him to pass. Exactly. Exactly.
- 18:33Speaker 2: I know Steele's got, I believe, I don't know in
- 18:35Speaker 2: front of me, I believe he signed a three-year deal.
- 18:37Speaker 2: It's typical of a street undirected free agent, wherever he goes,
- 18:42Speaker 2: to sign a three-year deal. after he left Kansas City.
- 18:44Speaker 2: But let's not forget, Bixby's contract's up. Shipley, this is
- 18:49Speaker 2: year three of a four-year deal. And yeah, it would
- 18:54Speaker 2: be nice to know who would be the long-term backup. Then,
- 18:56Speaker 2: of course, developing Barkley's successor at some point over the
- 19:00Speaker 2: next couple of years. But running back is in really
- 19:02Speaker 2: good shape, really good shape. For sure.
- 19:06Speaker 1: So an interesting thing about Lemon coming back this week,
- 19:11Speaker 1: combined with the fact that for whatever reason, reason training
- 19:15Speaker 1: camp is a week longer, or there's an extra week
- 19:17Speaker 1: before the start of the season opener, right? So if
- 19:20Speaker 1: you think about it, he, Mekhi Lemon will have this week,
- 19:23Speaker 1: he will have next week, and the week after to
- 19:26Speaker 1: be ready for that Sunday game, the opener against the Commanders.
- 19:29Speaker 1: It's three weeks. That's like a week less than a
- 19:33Speaker 1: normal length of a training camp. So my point is,
- 19:36Speaker 1: if he can stay healthy and is practicing as much
- 19:39Speaker 1: as he's been practicing this week for the next three weeks,
- 19:41Speaker 1: it's a good shot that come Week one, you know,
- 19:45Speaker 1: against the Commanders, he may not be ready to play
- 19:47Speaker 1: a hundred percent of the snaps, but he wasn't going
- 19:49Speaker 1: to do that anyway, but he could probably be a
- 19:51Speaker 1: pretty big part of their 11 personnel for the first
- 19:55Speaker 1: week of the season. So by, but for all that
- 19:57Speaker 1: we've not seen out of him and Devante Smith week one,
- 20:01Speaker 1: Devante Smith, Makai Lemon could be your top two easily
- 20:04Speaker 1: wide receivers.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and look, you could play 12 with Lemon. Not
- 20:07Speaker 2: just 11. You could play 12. You reduce him as
- 20:10Speaker 2: an outside receiver. It's exactly what McVay does. And I
- 20:14Speaker 2: know Mike McCarthy was going to play Lemon, from what
- 20:18Speaker 2: I understand, inside. Because they wanted him. The Steelers, everybody
- 20:21Speaker 2: knows the story. The Steelers wanted him. They were going
- 20:22Speaker 2: to play him inside and outside. More inside than outside, obviously. Right.
- 20:25Speaker 2: He's not really an outside receiver, but there's certain things
- 20:28Speaker 2: you could do with him. Yeah. But Tay Wicks, moving
- 20:31Speaker 2: on to him, Tay Wicks has had quite the... He's been...
- 20:34Speaker 2: I know Darius Cooper, though, he had another drop in
- 20:37Speaker 2: the practice. No, I mean, it's right in his hands.
- 20:42Speaker 2: He's got to catch it. But Wicks has been the
- 20:43Speaker 2: most consistent pass catcher in training camp. He's had a
- 20:47Speaker 2: great camp. We'll see what happens when regular season starts,
- 20:49Speaker 2: but he's been really good.
- 20:50Speaker 1: That's why I mentioned you most likely see 11 and 11.
- 20:54Speaker 1: He could play in 12, but I feel like Wicks
- 20:56Speaker 1: has done enough to prove that he deserves to be
- 20:58Speaker 1: out there for a lot of it.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah. 11 or 12.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 2: He's done great.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Um, there's really, I don't know if there's anything much more,
- 21:08Speaker 1: the big guesswork is, are they going to keep Elijah Moore? Um,
- 21:12Speaker 1: that would open it. Cause they've already, but by putting
- 21:14Speaker 1: Johnny Wilson, you know, waved injured, I guess they've opened
- 21:17Speaker 1: up the door. If they want to keep five, right.
- 21:20Speaker 1: They keep Smith.
- 21:21Speaker 2: They're going to keep five.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Smith, right. Lemon, Wicks, Cooper. Right. And is Hollywood Brown
- 21:29Speaker 1: or is Elijah Moore that fit? That's the question right now.
- 21:32Speaker 1: You would think with Brown.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Brown's a lock. He's making $ 5 million fully guaranteed. He's
- 21:35Speaker 2: not going anywhere. They're not walking away.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Then there's really not a pathway unless they keep six
- 21:39Speaker 1: for Moore. Unless they do it differently. Cooper's got team's value.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Moore really doesn't.
- 21:45Speaker 2: That hurts him. Moore, to me, is the discussion with
- 21:50Speaker 2: the agent and the player. Because Moore, after a slow
- 21:53Speaker 2: first week, has been really good.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Really good.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Said nothing not to be on the team, but that's
- 21:58Speaker 2: what you have. the 16 man practice squad where you
- 22:01Speaker 2: could have veterans on it. I mean, that, that's, that's,
- 22:03Speaker 2: that's the discussion because they really, they don't need to
- 22:06Speaker 2: have six on the 53. They really don't because we
- 22:09Speaker 2: know the Eagles will finish off with offensive line in
- 22:11Speaker 2: a minute. The Eagles have so many quality, at least
- 22:15Speaker 2: from what we've seen, what we've heard and what we know,
- 22:18Speaker 2: quality developmental offensive lineman. And that's, you know, that's super
- 22:22Speaker 2: important to the way that the football operations operate. Yeah.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But a couple of, see, a couple of wide receivers,
- 22:28Speaker 1: this is not like an unknown guy, right? Like you said.
- 22:30Speaker 1: So we've already seen a couple of wide receivers get
- 22:33Speaker 1: hurt in practice. You know, there's teams like the Dolphins
- 22:36Speaker 1: who have like no wide receivers. I'd be a little
- 22:38Speaker 1: bit reluctant to try to strike a deal. Well, I mean,
- 22:41Speaker 1: obviously you're right. Howie would talk to the agent before
- 22:44Speaker 1: the cut down and see if he has an agreement.
- 22:46Speaker 1: But if I'm his agent, I'm saying, I'm going to
- 22:50Speaker 1: find a job for this guy. So if you're on
- 22:52Speaker 1: the 53, there's no reason for me to like, you know,
- 22:54Speaker 1: work something out.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Yeah. He walks into Miami top three receiver. I mean, that's,
- 22:59Speaker 2: I've not seen this kind of group in probably a
- 23:03Speaker 2: decade of, if you thought the Eagles group and 20
- 23:07Speaker 2: was bad. Yeah. The Dolphins group is like college. It's
- 23:10Speaker 2: basically AAA. It should not be what you're going into
- 23:13Speaker 2: the season with. We, the reason why they're partially they're
- 23:15Speaker 2: doing is because they made a conscious decision to take
- 23:19Speaker 2: massive cap hits and and just go young, and they
- 23:24Speaker 2: know they're going to be bad. Malik Washington's an interesting player,
- 23:28Speaker 2: but overall they're going to be terrible. So you make
- 23:31Speaker 2: a good point. Moore could go somewhere like Miami and
- 23:35Speaker 2: have a big role and maybe even make more money.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so we'll see what happens there. Tight end. Howard
- 23:45Speaker 1: has to make a move here. It's set, but it's not.
- 23:48Speaker 1: It's not complete.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Well, they need Cam Latu to me. I know he
- 23:52Speaker 2: has not gotten a lot of reps, but Stowers to
- 23:57Speaker 2: me is, he's just not there physically. It's going to
- 24:00Speaker 2: take a while. We know he's new. This is his
- 24:02Speaker 2: fourth year as a tight end. This is going to be,
- 24:04Speaker 2: he's a project who's very athletic and there's a lot
- 24:06Speaker 2: of upside, but it's going to take time. Yeah. Because
- 24:08Speaker 2: it took Zach Ertz time. So to me, Latu is
- 24:12Speaker 2: the guy, because he does everything. He does not get
- 24:14Speaker 2: enough credit for the talent that he has. The staff
- 24:18Speaker 2: last year didn't use him the right way, which we
- 24:19Speaker 2: pointed out by tape study. Right. I don't know what
- 24:22Speaker 2: this guy has to do. Johnny Monk could play. There's
- 24:24Speaker 2: no question Johnny Monk could play. He looks like he–
- 24:26Speaker 2: because we weren't sure. Yeah. CJ Uzama was signed to
- 24:30Speaker 2: be the backup Y, and he couldn't play anymore.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:33Speaker 2: So you never know. He just retired, by the way.
- 24:35Speaker 1: He was released by the Jags. It's not like he
- 24:37Speaker 1: was a free agent signing because, you know, the Eagles
- 24:39Speaker 1: outbid him. Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 1: So, all right, so you got Munt, you got Goddard.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I think the big question I'll have is, and that
- 24:47Speaker 1: we will not be able to answer in training camp,
- 24:49Speaker 1: no matter what you see, because it's not going to
- 24:52Speaker 1: play in any preseason games, is Goddard declining a little?
- 24:55Speaker 1: Is the blocking still not there like it wasn't last year?
- 24:59Speaker 1: It wasn't great. Is he declining at all in catching?
- 25:03Speaker 1: He used to be like the star of training camp
- 25:05Speaker 1: a lot earlier in his career.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I wouldn't quite say. He's made some nice catches, but
- 25:09Speaker 1: there's not this– there's not this every day of five
- 25:12Speaker 1: to six great catches of, I've got it anymore. That's fine.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I wouldn't blame him for that. It's the structure.
- 25:17Speaker 1: No, no, no, no, no. Yeah, I'm not, I'm not.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I'm just, it's just natural at this age and what
- 25:21Speaker 1: we saw with his blocking last year that he could
- 25:23Speaker 1: be a little step, a little rung lower than that.
- 25:27Speaker 1: So I don't know, but I do know that if
- 25:29Speaker 1: he got hurt, they got nobody that can do what
- 25:32Speaker 1: he does other than maybe a Camelot who just doesn't
- 25:35Speaker 1: get the opportunity to do it. So it's just not
- 25:38Speaker 1: a complete picture to me. I think it's, It's an
- 25:41Speaker 1: area where Howie would probably make a move if he
- 25:44Speaker 1: could and will be looking to. But I just don't
- 25:46Speaker 1: love what they've got in the backup tank right now.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Especially if your second round pick isn't going to play,
- 25:51Speaker 1: you know, early on.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Well, playing and being a factor are two different things.
- 25:57Speaker 2: He's just not.
- 25:58Speaker 1: That's what I mean. Yeah, he's not going to be
- 25:59Speaker 1: a factor. He'll probably be inactive.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Well, I don't know about that. But the bottom line
- 26:04Speaker 2: is they've got seven tight ends and they still have questions.
- 26:08Speaker 2: You know, E.J. Jenkins is still there. I mean, he's
- 26:10Speaker 2: still there, but former receiver, stone smart to undersized, who's
- 26:15Speaker 2: got some athletic tools. And then Grant Calcaterra, you know,
- 26:17Speaker 2: I talked about it last week. I know people were
- 26:19Speaker 2: not happy. I knew I was going to get fried
- 26:20Speaker 2: on that one.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Oh, what happened?
- 26:22Speaker 2: No, you can't be on this roster. I talked about
- 26:24Speaker 2: being on the 69-man roster.
- 26:26Speaker 1: He could. Absolutely. Oh, yeah.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. He's got 750 grand guaranteed. Yeah, I see
- 26:33Speaker 2: him being that guy on the practice squad if he
- 26:35Speaker 2: doesn't make the 53. But you have two guys who
- 26:41Speaker 2: can block, Goddard and Munt, okay? Stowers is not ready
- 26:44Speaker 2: to do that. Latu can, but I don't have him
- 26:47Speaker 2: on it. If I had to do my 53 today,
- 26:49Speaker 2: which is Wednesday, he deserves to be on it because
- 26:52Speaker 2: he's got the developmental tools. But I just don't see
- 26:55Speaker 2: the love that Greg Cosell has for him from the
- 26:59Speaker 2: coaching staff. They just have not given him that run.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I don't know what they don't see. That's what I
- 27:04Speaker 2: like to know.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And the quarterbacks. I mean, he does not get a
- 27:06Speaker 1: lot of targets in practice. No, rarely.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Exactly right. He rarely gets a pass run. Get it. Anyway,
- 27:13Speaker 2: let's move on. All right.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Offensive line. Pretty set. The big question coming out of
- 27:19Speaker 1: Tuesday night is Lane Johnson. All right. Cause I know
- 27:21Speaker 1: he limped off the, sorry, coming out of yeah. Tuesday
- 27:25Speaker 1: night is Lane Johnson. Okay. I know he was, he
- 27:29Speaker 1: came off the field. Looked like maybe it was limping
- 27:31Speaker 1: a little bit, but then later everybody saw him talking
- 27:33Speaker 1: with the team and, walking around so hopefully he's all right.
- 27:36Speaker 2: Yeah he watched he watched the entire practice he was
- 27:38Speaker 2: he he left came back very quickly and just watched
- 27:42Speaker 2: okay so he didn't go in for treatment that's actually
- 27:44Speaker 2: a good sign but we'll see what happens so yeah
- 27:46Speaker 2: it's pretty set as we go forward here Markel Bell
- 27:49Speaker 2: who's got a couple injuries now we have to watch
- 27:51Speaker 2: that uh thumb injury specifically right now he's the backup
- 27:55Speaker 2: right tackle Fred Johnson's the backup left Johnson could play
- 27:57Speaker 2: right or left so they're pretty set a tackle yeah
- 28:00Speaker 2: kennel's their top backup guard Now, what I would caution people, yes,
- 28:05Speaker 2: he's looked good. You really don't know about a guy
- 28:08Speaker 2: like Kendall. Yes, he's up to 305, put on 15
- 28:11Speaker 2: pounds of muscle. That's great. It certainly helped him. You
- 28:14Speaker 2: don't know until they have to play in the regular season.
- 28:17Speaker 2: It all sounds good. It looks good. You don't know.
- 28:20Speaker 2: But he is clearly the backup guard. He could play
- 28:23Speaker 2: center because he was the center coming into the offseason program.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Willie Lampkin was very good in the game, so they're
- 28:29Speaker 2: set there in terms of developmental backups. Mm-hmm. Now, it
- 28:33Speaker 2: doesn't mean they won't have a guard on the practice squad.
- 28:38Speaker 2: This Jake Majors, short-arm Majors, he's done a good job.
- 28:41Speaker 1: He has.
- 28:43Speaker 2: He worked with the ones when Juergens needed a breather
- 28:46Speaker 2: on Tuesday night. He's seen time at guard and center.
- 28:52Speaker 2: But the issue with him is when you're giving up
- 28:54Speaker 2: three to four inches of arm length, that's a major
- 28:56Speaker 2: problem for Jake Majors if he had to play in
- 28:58Speaker 2: the regular season. That is a real problem. It is.
- 29:01Speaker 1: So it sounds like nine are set. It's just how
- 29:04Speaker 1: we keep anybody developmental, 10, 11, you know, Ajuku, who
- 29:09Speaker 1: came back to practice at the opening, at the open practice.
- 29:13Speaker 2: That was great, by the way. See, you never really know.
- 29:16Speaker 2: It was a pectoral spasm, which is, there's a, in
- 29:21Speaker 2: the medical field with NFL people, sometimes a guy has
- 29:25Speaker 2: a hamstring spasm, not a strain, where he goes, oh,
- 29:29Speaker 2: and winds up being nothing. Well, for Ojukwu to come
- 29:33Speaker 2: back this quickly, I mean, he certainly didn't strain it.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I don't know what it is, but that's– good sign
- 29:40Speaker 2: even a grade one you're not back that quickly so
- 29:42Speaker 2: that's a great sign for him it doesn't mean he'll
- 29:44Speaker 2: be on the roster right not vested it's going to
- 29:47Speaker 2: be hard as you said for him to make it
- 29:49Speaker 2: but the cool thing is they've got like four like
- 29:52Speaker 2: four to six players who are really intriguing for developmentally
- 29:54Speaker 2: yep Miles Hinton, he's not moving up, but he's run
- 29:58Speaker 2: with the twos a little bit lately. He's a long
- 30:00Speaker 2: shot to make it. Cam Williams, a major long shot
- 30:02Speaker 2: to make it. So they're in pretty good shape here.
- 30:05Speaker 2: But again, as we say, if these guys had to
- 30:07Speaker 2: play in the regular season, that means they're playing against
- 30:09Speaker 2: the opponent's ones, not the twos.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it has not been a great camp for Hinton. So,
- 30:13Speaker 1: you know, the idea of keeping 11 now doesn't seem realistic.
- 30:18Speaker 2: I don't want to piff Towie. When they kept seven
- 30:22Speaker 2: offensive tackles to start the season, then they traded Contavious
- 30:26Speaker 2: Street to Atlanta. I remember a personnel guy whose job
- 30:29Speaker 2: was to study the Eagles because that was one of
- 30:30Speaker 2: the teams that he was assigned for pro personnel. He goes,
- 30:33Speaker 2: what is Howie doing? I go, dude, I don't know.
- 30:37Speaker 2: I think a week later he traded Street. But that
- 30:40Speaker 2: was actually really smart because you see a guy who
- 30:43Speaker 2: could play in the league, and if somebody loses a player,
- 30:46Speaker 2: they're going to come call him. And they did, and
- 30:47Speaker 2: that's what happened.
- 30:48Speaker 1: For sure.
- 30:49Speaker 2: For sure.
- 30:49Speaker 1: All right. So the Niners, I think that they'll be
- 30:51Speaker 1: able to get majors on a practice squad if they want.
- 30:53Speaker 1: I don't see it. I don't think teams are going
- 30:55Speaker 1: to knock down the door for them. And the same
- 30:57Speaker 1: thing with Ajuku, although he's got some NFL experience, so
- 31:01Speaker 1: I don't know. And they did cross-train him. He has
- 31:04Speaker 1: played a left. That would be the guy that I
- 31:05Speaker 1: could see them sneaking onto the 53 just because they
- 31:08Speaker 1: wanted to make sure they had more time with him
- 31:10Speaker 1: and didn't want to lose him.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Well, I look at it this way. The reason why
- 31:14Speaker 2: you would cut him, you'd wave him, It's because they're
- 31:16Speaker 2: set at both backup tackles. Now, he did get– he
- 31:19Speaker 2: has been cross-training a guard.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Is it enough to keep him? Probably not because you've
- 31:25Speaker 2: got Michael Jordan, who they always look to put on
- 31:27Speaker 2: the practice squad.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Oh, shoot. You know, I forgot about him, and I
- 31:30Speaker 1: forgot about Micah Morris. He's a rookie. He might– It's
- 31:33Speaker 1: a tough one, right. He's a good athlete. He moves.
- 31:37Speaker 2: He's got something there. I would not be surprised at
- 31:40Speaker 2: all if they kept 11. Now, obviously, if you keep
- 31:42Speaker 2: 11– It's hard to keep six receivers. I don't see it. Quarterback,
- 31:48Speaker 2: you're only keeping three. Quarterback, we'll see if somebody's traded
- 31:52Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 31:57Speaker 1: long lines. We've all been there. But when it comes
- 32:00Speaker 1: to your cannabis... Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 32:04Speaker 1: the dispensary for sports fans. Just minutes outside of Philly

- 32:38Speaker 1: they even show love to the community with specials for
- 32:41Speaker 1: fans students service members and health care pros camden apothecary
- 32:46Speaker 1: top quality cannabis great prices and an experience made for
- 32:50Speaker 1: philly fans 21 and.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Up it's tough man it's it's Eagles have a pretty
- 32:56Speaker 2: significant history going back decades of having super depth on
- 33:00Speaker 2: the offensive line and attack on defensive line. Well, this
- 33:03Speaker 2: is the 34 front. And Ty Robinson's played himself onto
- 33:08Speaker 2: this team to me. As Vic said, he's off life
- 33:11Speaker 2: support on this roster. It's fascinating, but this is not
- 33:17Speaker 2: going to be easy. We could say, oh, they should
- 33:21Speaker 2: be able to sneak them through, but you say that, Remember,
- 33:25Speaker 2: the access that the other clubs have is to your
- 33:28Speaker 2: preseason tape. They've got all the news clips. They know
- 33:31Speaker 2: who's doing well because they read everything. They get it.
- 33:33Speaker 2: I know from talking to the clubs, they all get
- 33:34Speaker 2: news clips.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 33:36Speaker 2: From what the reporters have. And they typically in the
- 33:39Speaker 2: pro personnel department, they've got interns who monitor social media.
- 33:44Speaker 2: And they want to know what the reporters are saying. Now,
- 33:47Speaker 2: are the reporters always right? No, they don't know what
- 33:48Speaker 2: the hell they're looking at sometimes. But if they keep
- 33:51Speaker 2: saying it day after day after day, they're probably going
- 33:53Speaker 2: to be right. And clubs know this. So just keep
- 33:56Speaker 2: that in mind. It's like when, who was the guy,
- 33:59Speaker 2: the why that we were laughing at that the Cardinals claimed?
- 34:04Speaker 2: You guys were pissed off about it.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Oh, gosh. Was the really tall guy? No. Who was it?
- 34:10Speaker 2: I'll tell you.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I can't remember his name. I know who you're talking about.
- 34:13Speaker 2: The Colts claimed him. I'm sorry. No, the Colts claimed him.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Oh, the Colts?
- 34:18Speaker 2: Yeah. What was the, I forget what Chris Ballard said,
- 34:22Speaker 2: something that, They needed a why, and they knew about
- 34:26Speaker 2: him because they might have seen the– I.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Just– Oh, I know. Are you talking about the tight end, Togiai?
- 34:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 1: When they came to him? Yeah, yeah.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Togiai was the guy. Yes, the Colts claimed him. And
- 34:38Speaker 2: I remember Chris Ballard saying they knew about him based
- 34:41Speaker 2: on what they had heard, based on how well he
- 34:43Speaker 2: was doing at camp. And I was like, wow.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And then they went back and looked at their own
- 34:47Speaker 1: scouting report. Right, yeah.
- 34:49Speaker 2: No, but they knew from training camp that he was
- 34:52Speaker 2: kicking ass. They read, they'd heard, they'd gather the information
- 34:55Speaker 2: through channels, through news clips that he was doing really well. Now,
- 34:59Speaker 2: he never did a thing for them.
- 35:00Speaker 1: No, no, not much. No, that's funny. I haven't thought
- 35:03Speaker 1: about Noah Togiai in a long time.
- 35:05Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Anyway. Oh, that's it. I mean, obviously, Michael Morris being
- 35:09Speaker 1: a rookie has a shot, so I could see them
- 35:11Speaker 1: keeping that 10th or 11th for developmental purposes, but we'll see.
- 35:17Speaker 1: It's going to be an interesting decision because defensively, if
- 35:20Speaker 1: they're going to keep a couple guys like, projects like
- 35:23Speaker 1: we'll ruin Bernard. It makes it tougher to go heavy
- 35:26Speaker 1: in other areas. So you want to do defense next time.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Next episode, we'll go through the state of the defense.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Next, next show. We'll do the state of defense
- 35:33Speaker 2: for sure.
- 35:33Speaker 1: All right. Sounds good. That is it. That is the
- 35:35Speaker 1: state of the offense for the Eagles as things currently
- 35:38Speaker 1: stand here in the middle of this week, this final
- 35:42Speaker 1: full week of training camp for the Philadelphia Eagles. Next episode,
- 35:45Speaker 1: we'll get to the defense. That's going to do it
