- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, hey, Emily, here you are listening to five Minute
- 0:23Speaker 1: Friday from Hurdle. I am in Savannah. I've never been
- 0:29Speaker 1: here before. I am excited to be here. I'm on
- 0:32Speaker 1: the ground this weekend for every Woman's Marathon, where I'll
- 0:35Speaker 1: be hosting some exciting things at their wellness expo today
- 0:39Speaker 1: and then cheering on all the runners tomorrow in their
- 0:43Speaker 1: inaugural event. There's nothing better, in my opinion, than being
- 0:49Speaker 1: surrounded by excited, empowered women, and so to be at
- 0:55Speaker 1: an event that is for women, by women feels very
- 0:58Speaker 1: naturally aligned with who I am and what I'm about,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and so yeah, all things considered, I am amped for
- 1:05Speaker 1: this weekend. I have been thinking a lot lately about
- 1:11Speaker 1: not rushing, and it started last Friday when I had
- 1:16Speaker 1: candidly the ultimate day, I started my day off with
- 1:21Speaker 1: a run with some girlfriends that ended in a pastry
- 1:26Speaker 1: always good. I did work for a few hours before
- 1:28Speaker 1: heading into the city for a couple of meetings.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And then my meetings were near.
- 1:33Speaker 1: One of my favorite restaurants, bar Premi, So I went
- 1:36Speaker 1: into Premi and had a great salad for lunch, treated
- 1:40Speaker 1: myself to a glass of wine. Because it was the
- 1:42Speaker 1: week after the marathon and the celebrations are still not over.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And then I finished some more work and headed toward
- 1:51Speaker 1: bath house in Flat Iron, where I had an early
- 1:54Speaker 1: evening massage.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And I wasn't in a rush.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I planned all of this so that I didn't need
- 2:00Speaker 1: to be stressed, so that I had the time to
- 2:02Speaker 1: do the things that I wanted to do, and so
- 2:04Speaker 1: that I could just be And I am meandering my
- 2:08Speaker 1: way from Hudson Yards to Flat Iron when I hear
- 2:15Speaker 1: my name. I turn around and I can't make this up.
- 2:20Speaker 1: The man saying my name is the owner of my
- 2:23Speaker 1: favorite small panini shop in Florence, Italy. His name is Alessandro,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and he is in town because he has a gig
- 2:31Speaker 1: at the Four Seasons Residences. And we just happened to
- 2:35Speaker 1: run into each other or he spotted me in front
- 2:38Speaker 1: of Italy and Nomad. It was.
- 2:41Speaker 2: It was so special.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And after I caught up with him briefly and we
- 2:45Speaker 1: both went on our ways, I thought to myself that
- 2:49Speaker 1: this happened because I wasn't in a rush. This happened
- 2:52Speaker 1: because I wasn't walking down the street with my headphones in,
- 2:56Speaker 1: not paying any attention to the people around me, and
- 2:59Speaker 1: it was so awesome, and so after I ran into him,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and then I got this amazing massage, and then I
- 3:04Speaker 1: stopped by the Saphora sale and I got home before
- 3:07Speaker 1: seven forty five, and I was able to eat a
- 3:10Speaker 1: nice dinner and go to bed early.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And I woke up.
- 3:14Speaker 1: The next day and I thought to myself, I need
- 3:16Speaker 1: to keep this going. I want to do whatever it
- 3:19Speaker 1: is within my power to remove the stress from my
- 3:23Speaker 1: day to day by accommodating for the small moments, and
- 3:27Speaker 1: by doing that, I am realizing that I'm more present
- 3:31Speaker 1: as the moments go by. Case in point, today, I decided,
- 3:35Speaker 1: after getting into Savannah that I wanted to go treat
- 3:38Speaker 1: myself to a sauna session. I found a keut small
- 3:41Speaker 1: business not far from my hotel. I walked there and
- 3:44Speaker 1: I was looking at the buildings and the structures and
- 3:47Speaker 1: how beautiful they are.
- 3:48Speaker 2: On my way to.
- 3:49Speaker 1: This small business, and I noticed a really adorable wine
- 3:53Speaker 1: shop en route. I told myself that I would stop
- 3:56Speaker 1: there on the way back to my hotel. And so
- 3:58Speaker 1: I go in and again I'm not in any particular rush,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and I end up having a twenty minute conversation with
- 4:05Speaker 1: the man who owns this adorable wine shop called Le Chai.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I might be saying that wrong, and if I am,
- 4:11Speaker 1: I apologize to anyone who's local. And we talked about
- 4:16Speaker 1: the marathon root and where it could be good for
- 4:18Speaker 1: me to watch, and he recommended some really great winds
- 4:21Speaker 1: me and I promised him that in the next few
- 4:23Speaker 1: days that I would be back. And I think that
- 4:26Speaker 1: sometimes when we're so in our own lane and we
- 4:30Speaker 1: have the blinders on, there can be benefits to having
- 4:33Speaker 1: the blinders on. Don't get me wrong, but what are
- 4:35Speaker 1: you missing when you do that? That's what I've been
- 4:39Speaker 1: thinking about lately. When there's so much goodness all around,
- 4:44Speaker 1: why not, if it's within your power, just take a beat, right.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And So it's a commitment that I want to make,
- 4:52Speaker 1: especially going into the holiday season, where I do feel
- 4:54Speaker 1: like there is often a little bit more time to
- 4:57Speaker 1: take a step back and slow down.
- 5:00Speaker 2: What happens if you slow down? Is it all so serious?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Is there time to be a little bit kinder, to
- 5:08Speaker 1: be a little bit more open.
- 5:10Speaker 2: That's what I want. That's exactly what I want.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And so my prompt for you this week, what is
- 5:16Speaker 1: something that you want to make an effort to do
- 5:19Speaker 1: before the end of the year. So for me, I
- 5:22Speaker 1: want to slow down. I want to stop rushing everywhere.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I want to be more present. What do you want
- 5:27Speaker 1: to make an effort to do regularly in your day
- 5:31Speaker 1: to day or just like I said, before the end
- 5:34Speaker 1: of the year, and now a listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 5:39Speaker 1: love your podcast, congrats on completing the World Majors and
- 5:43Speaker 1: everything else. Professionally, the running shoe process is fairly confusing
- 5:47Speaker 1: and there's a lot of different options.
- 5:49Speaker 2: If possible, it.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Would be really great if you could discuss the types
- 5:52Speaker 1: of shoes to keep in a shoe rotation, how to
- 5:54Speaker 1: pick them, the science behind the super shoes, and potential
- 5:58Speaker 1: injuries super shoes might cause. I looked into this recently
- 6:02Speaker 1: and I seem more confused than before.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Thank you a meet. Wow.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Okay, this is definitely something that could be an entire
- 6:11Speaker 1: podcast episode, so I'm gonna keep that in mind. But
- 6:14Speaker 1: what I will talk on for this purpose for this
- 6:18Speaker 1: listener question today is different types of shoes to keep
- 6:21Speaker 1: in your rotation. So I say this understanding that not
- 6:26Speaker 1: everyone has some sort of abundant budget, right, that shoes
- 6:31Speaker 1: cost money and they can be expensive, but ideally, at
- 6:35Speaker 1: any given time, if you can have two to three
- 6:38Speaker 1: different shoes in your rotation, that would be great, both
- 6:42Speaker 1: because then you're not putting all of your miles on
- 6:44Speaker 1: one shoe, but also because different shoes can be good
- 6:48Speaker 1: for different purposes. Two training shoes that I would recommend.
- 6:53Speaker 1: One that is your workhorse. You are doing base mileage
- 6:56Speaker 1: in this shoe. You are doing your long runs in
- 6:58Speaker 1: this shoe. This is a shoe that feels really comfortable.
- 7:01Speaker 1: We know that if you are comfortable in your go
- 7:03Speaker 1: to sneaker, then you are less likely to get injured
- 7:07Speaker 1: rather than oftentimes you go into a sneaker store and
- 7:10Speaker 1: someone's going to show you a sneaker that is specifically
- 7:13Speaker 1: designed to your gate. And what that means is that
- 7:16Speaker 1: everyone has a different way that their foot interacts with
- 7:18Speaker 1: the ground. Some people have a neutral gate, some people
- 7:21Speaker 1: pronate or supinate, which means that your foot tilts a
- 7:24Speaker 1: certain way when you go through that step, that movement pattern,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and someone might just sell you a shoe based on
- 7:31Speaker 1: your gate cycle. It makes sense. But if you were
- 7:34Speaker 1: to buy a shoe that accommodates your gate cycle and
- 7:37Speaker 1: you don't feel confident in that shoe, you don't feel
- 7:39Speaker 1: comfortable in that shoe, then the research shows, like I said,
- 7:43Speaker 1: that you are more likely to get injured. So you
- 7:46Speaker 1: want to wear something that feels comfortable, that you feel
- 7:48Speaker 1: confident in. You have that base mileage shoe, then also
- 7:53Speaker 1: you might look for a lighter shoe that you can
- 7:57Speaker 1: do some speedwork in. So it's not that you can't
- 7:59Speaker 1: do speed work in your base mileage shoe, right your
- 8:02Speaker 1: Goldilock sneaker, that's not it. But as you can imagine,
- 8:05Speaker 1: if the shoe is lighter in weight, it'll be less
- 8:08Speaker 1: weight holding you back, which means that you'll feel zippier
- 8:12Speaker 1: when you're out there on the roads.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Or at the track.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Again, it's not necessary, but if you have the opportunity
- 8:19Speaker 1: to have multiple tools in your toolbox, then I say
- 8:23Speaker 1: go for it. For me, I'm a really big fan
- 8:26Speaker 1: right now of the Nike Pegasus Plus. That's my zippy,
- 8:30Speaker 1: speedy shoe, and then I've been doing a lot of
- 8:33Speaker 1: base mileage in the Brooks Ghost Max. Those are the
- 8:36Speaker 1: two that I'm regularly rotating between, and it feels really
- 8:40Speaker 1: good for me.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I feel really confident in both of them.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Now a third shoe, this is that area that you
- 8:46Speaker 1: touched on a meat and that is carbon plated shoes.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Carbon Plated shoes aren't shoes that you should be wearing
- 8:53Speaker 1: every day. If you have the means, they're a really
- 8:55Speaker 1: great option to lean into for racing because often they
- 8:58Speaker 1: provide a greater energy which because of that carbon plate,
- 9:01Speaker 1: which propel you forward and then as a result, might
- 9:05Speaker 1: make you move faster. For me, I'm a really big
- 9:08Speaker 1: fan of the Nike Alpha Fly three. It's what I
- 9:11Speaker 1: ran New York in. I've run marathons in the Vapor
- 9:14Speaker 1: Fly before, as well as the Salcony Andendorphin Elite, which
- 9:18Speaker 1: is what I ran Berlin in last year. So three
- 9:22Speaker 1: shoes a lightweight shoe that's really great for speedwork and
- 9:25Speaker 1: you feel comfortable in a base mileage workhorse, You're going
- 9:28Speaker 1: to be looking something here that might have a little
- 9:30Speaker 1: bit more cushion, something that again comfort is key, and
- 9:34Speaker 1: finally that carbon plated shoe. There are so many intricrac
- 9:37Speaker 1: season here and it's definitely not a one size fits
- 9:41Speaker 1: all solution. What feels good for me might not feel
- 9:43Speaker 1: good for you. I'm going to link a couple of
- 9:45Speaker 1: helpful articles in the show notes to help you learn
- 9:48Speaker 1: more about what sneakers could be in your rotation and
- 9:52Speaker 1: help you make some decisions. Make sure you're following along
