- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted now at its finals. This is the what
- 0:24Speaker 1: we Love away for folks. The telecap final has arrived
- 0:26Speaker 1: and if hopefully like a good sequel, maybe this could
- 0:28Speaker 1: be more Godfather too than the original Godfather, because last
- 0:30Speaker 1: year's final was epic going seven games to Oilers arrived
- 0:33Speaker 1: from three to zero down and then they're going to
- 0:35Speaker 1: face off for the second straight year.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Florida course looking to repeat oil.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Listening of the first title since they won five times
- 0:40Speaker 1: in seven seasons between nineteen eighty four and nineteen ninety.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Puck drops Wednesday, Edmonton, So let us break down that matchup,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and of course Jation nvers will be there for NHL
- 0:48Speaker 1: Network and for Ntscripted.
- 0:50Speaker 2: JD is gonna be fire up to going to Northern Alberta.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Turtle Island as they call it, the Island of the
- 0:56Speaker 3: Turtles the Chief Blackfoot tribe im on now Edmonton, Florida.
- 1:09Speaker 3: The rematch, Come on, baby, it's gonna be fun. I
- 1:14Speaker 3: was dreading it, dreading them doing the two connecting flights
- 1:19Speaker 3: every gosh darn time that I have to fly from
- 1:21Speaker 3: Edmonton to Florida. But yeah, listen, they're paying me to
- 1:24Speaker 3: do it. Gotta do it, gotta go. Gonna be boots
- 1:27Speaker 3: on the ground for NHL and scripted. Hopefully we'll be
- 1:31Speaker 3: coming to you fans live, and we should be coming
- 1:34Speaker 3: to live before every game, giving you a little breakdown,
- 1:37Speaker 3: little bonus coverage, fifteen to twenty minutes, quick in and out,
- 1:40Speaker 3: so it won't be your normal formatting of Wednesday and
- 1:43Speaker 3: Sunday that you've grown so accustomed to these playoffs. But
- 1:46Speaker 3: it will then become every day before just a little
- 1:49Speaker 3: little pregame preview and kind of give you everything I'm
- 1:52Speaker 3: feeling seeing and we'll just get to chop it up.
- 1:55Speaker 3: But it's a great matchup. I can't wait. This team Edmonton,
- 1:59Speaker 3: I don't know, there's just something about them. I feel
- 2:01Speaker 3: like they're ready. I feel like it's time. I know
- 2:02Speaker 3: they lost Zach Hymon, but you know, for the people
- 2:05Speaker 3: saying Zach Hyman's gone, they were seven and three without
- 2:08Speaker 3: him this year, so they can win without him. So
- 2:11Speaker 3: this is going to be interesting. It's the year of
- 2:12Speaker 3: the Worm. Corey Perry lead miss Edmonton Oilers team in
- 2:17Speaker 3: goal and goal scoring, specifically on the power play and
- 2:22Speaker 3: he's looking to finally get over that hump yet again,
- 2:26Speaker 3: win a Cup that he won so long ago when
- 2:29Speaker 3: he was in Anaheim and now has been to five finals,
- 2:31Speaker 3: so so much to love, so many storylines to break down,
- 2:34Speaker 3: and yeah, I can just keep going all night. You
- 2:37Speaker 3: want me to keep going.
- 2:38Speaker 1: At now, I'm gonna jump in Laurence Golds And of
- 2:39Speaker 1: course our great researcher NHL never put together a great packet.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So this is the players to appear in game seven of.
- 2:45Speaker 1: This stay the Cup final a year ago are no
- 2:46Speaker 1: longer the Oilers slash Panthers. So Philip Robert, Cody Cecy,
- 2:49Speaker 1: Warren Fogel, Dillon Holloway, Roy McLeod, Anthony Stillar's Vibora Tersenko
- 2:53Speaker 1: for Florida, Oel l Eckman, Larson, Ryan Lomberg, Brandon Montro, Coloposo,
- 2:58Speaker 1: Kevin Steley. You mentioned Hymen's injury and Derek Ryan a
- 3:01Speaker 1: scratch through the postseason. I means fourteen players who's ended
- 3:04Speaker 1: up in Game seven last year will not be in
- 3:06Speaker 1: the line for Game one.
- 3:07Speaker 2: That's thirty five percent.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So it is a remac but you're still getting a
- 3:10Speaker 1: fair number players who are not familiar.
- 3:12Speaker 2: With each other. We kick it off first. We'll do
- 3:14Speaker 2: it like.
- 3:14Speaker 1: NFL style, will go offense, defense, special teams, so off that. Yeah, listen,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I know you love sport logic, our buddy, Mike Kelly,
- 3:20Speaker 1: sport logic.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Quench the numbers, Edmondsonday fifty two percent likely to winning.
- 3:24Speaker 2: How about that? It's basically a coin flip and the series.
- 3:27Speaker 3: To go expecting to go. That's nerd numbers right there.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And I love Mike Kelly. Fifty don't even fucking say
- 3:32Speaker 3: it if it's fifty two percent fifty one point, yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 3: I hear it ticking.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Someone says fifty fifty, Well, it's one or the other,
- 3:39Speaker 1: like it's either more of one than that.
- 3:40Speaker 2: It's never it's never truly.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Fifty to fifty. Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But the reason why that they're liking Edmondson by a
- 3:45Speaker 1: slight two percent is the offense Panthers Achilles heel in
- 3:49Speaker 1: this postseason is turning Bucks over Slash having trouble with
- 3:52Speaker 1: the opposition. For check, if you look at McDavid, Dr Subtle,
- 3:55Speaker 1: Nujian Hopkins, those three guys particularly have been hummon. As
- 3:58Speaker 1: you and I have talked about, Florida has more overall depth, although.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Edmondon's Debtholtely has been strong and one of.
- 4:03Speaker 1: The reasons why they're in situation, but at least in
- 4:05Speaker 1: a cursory look, Florida ten different players in double jeds
- 4:08Speaker 1: of scoring, Edmonton has seven.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Who's got the edge on offense?
- 4:13Speaker 3: You got to always lean on the side of Connor McDavid.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I just feel like Connor hasn't yet had that Connor
- 4:20Speaker 3: McDavid series that we've seen him do so many times,
- 4:23Speaker 3: where he wasn't getting any depth support. He's now getting
- 4:27Speaker 3: that depth support in spades. I just feel like he's
- 4:31Speaker 3: taken on a more defensive role, but I feel like
- 4:33Speaker 3: he has been waiting for this moment in his whole life.
- 4:36Speaker 3: He is ready to rip off their arms and beat
- 4:38Speaker 3: them to death with it with them, He's just on
- 4:41Speaker 3: a different level mentally, and I think Leon as well.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I think these two guys get humming and they can
- 4:47Speaker 3: take over hockey games. I'm gonna be interested to see
- 4:50Speaker 3: the difference from this year to last year. Is the
- 4:52Speaker 3: wholemice advantage on Edmonton other sides. I think that is
- 4:55Speaker 3: huge and critical. If you really look back at that series,
- 4:58Speaker 3: they beat the shit out of Florida, at home in
- 5:02Speaker 3: Edmonton they beat eight to one, six to one. Then
- 5:05Speaker 3: it was a four to three loss. That was the
- 5:07Speaker 3: game that Bob kind of stole. And then those three
- 5:10Speaker 3: games in Edmonton though were the highest scoring games, and
- 5:14Speaker 3: that was large in part because they got the home
- 5:17Speaker 3: ice last change. They got the last change and they
- 5:19Speaker 3: were able to capitalize on it and they really were
- 5:21Speaker 3: able to chase Bob. So this is going to be interesting,
- 5:24Speaker 3: and this is where I think they have the edge
- 5:26Speaker 3: in the series. And if they can get out to
- 5:28Speaker 3: an early one game lead and get that first critical
- 5:31Speaker 3: game because everything shifts if you don't get game one,
- 5:35Speaker 3: I think they're going to be in the driver's seat.
- 5:36Speaker 3: So this is for me, is the offense slightly, ever
- 5:39Speaker 3: so slightly fifty one point two percent on my by
- 5:43Speaker 3: my calculations, goes towards the Edmonton Oilers.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Oilers lead all playoff teams is scoring four to oh six.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Florida are behind three eight to eight. Tower point how
- 5:54Speaker 1: close it is. So I'm with the Edmonton slight edge offense.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So they got the game breakers on defense. Florida's seventh
- 5:59Speaker 1: ranked defense during the regular season and the playoffs long
- 6:02Speaker 1: two point two nine goals per game. They've been the
- 6:04Speaker 1: best had some team so far in the playoffs. Edmonton
- 6:06Speaker 1: more feistter famine two point eight one goals against Stuart
- 6:08Speaker 1: Skinned Those are amazing. Three shutouts, of course, but props,
- 6:11Speaker 1: he's no stranger puting a shutout.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Know what a great goalie he is.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Florida the deeper blue line. But Edmonton getting Mattias at
- 6:17Speaker 1: come back. You're the veteran of seven hundred games. Who's
- 6:20Speaker 1: got the edge on defense.
- 6:23Speaker 3: This one's tough because I actually thought before Mattias et
- 6:27Speaker 3: Com came back, I would have slightly leaned Florida. It's tough, man,
- 6:34Speaker 3: because I watched that games. Troy Stetcher has been the
- 6:38Speaker 3: Darnell Nurse whisperer. They have had some insane chemistry. I
- 6:41Speaker 3: don't think Kulak and Nurse play well together, and they
- 6:44Speaker 3: did not play well together in Game five. I thought
- 6:46Speaker 3: Matis that Com was good, but I don't know. They
- 6:48Speaker 3: got to figure out that second pairing because that's the
- 6:51Speaker 3: pairing that wins or loses you a playoff series. You know,
- 6:55Speaker 3: The Walman Klingberg pairing has been a revelation. I sait
- 6:58Speaker 3: on an NHL network today in NHL tonight. They've been
- 7:00Speaker 3: a revelation back there. They've been incredible. But this Florida
- 7:03Speaker 3: decoor when they have Nico Mikola back, has been very solid.
- 7:07Speaker 3: They've been the highest scoring decore of any decours in
- 7:11Speaker 3: the Stanley Cup playoffs. This is a team that with
- 7:15Speaker 3: that blad with Seth Jones Gustav Forslaying, they play very hard.
- 7:21Speaker 3: They're very physical, they're very mean in your face, and
- 7:25Speaker 3: I think they're more structure based than the Edmonton Oilers.
- 7:28Speaker 3: But the Edmonton Ollis have moved the puck so well
- 7:32Speaker 3: up ice. They're breaking pucks out so clean, and that
- 7:35Speaker 3: is where the game is going to be played in
- 7:36Speaker 3: the grain on the ford check, because Florida loves that
- 7:40Speaker 3: four check, and if they can break the pucks out
- 7:43Speaker 3: the way they've been breaking pucks out clean the Edmonton
- 7:45Speaker 3: others defense, that is they are going to really cause
- 7:48Speaker 3: fits for the Florida Panthers. But no one's been able
- 7:51Speaker 3: to do it. No one's been able to do it.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Edmonton got the closest, but I think with that coming back,
- 7:56Speaker 3: they have that edge as well. So this is me
- 7:58Speaker 3: leaning heavily on the Edmonton other side.
- 8:00Speaker 2: But Goltening edge.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Florida, Yes, Florida goltening edge. But if you look back
- 8:08Speaker 3: at last year, nay not, but a year ago, young lass,
- 8:14Speaker 3: Stuart Skinner outdueled Sergey Bobrovski in that seven game series,
- 8:20Speaker 3: and you can check the numbers. Bob had an under
- 8:23Speaker 3: nine hundred save percentage where Stuart Skinner had an over
- 8:25Speaker 3: nine hundred sad percentage. It was just in the big
- 8:29Speaker 3: moments and we had Pat Maroon with me tonight on
- 8:32Speaker 3: AHL tonight and new analyst, and he was shocked when
- 8:37Speaker 3: I showed him the numbers as well. Be everybody's like
- 8:38Speaker 3: Bob's the edge, Bob's edge and like Stuart beat him
- 8:41Speaker 3: out duell them. Bob got pulled twice in the Stanley
- 8:43Speaker 3: Cup Finals, but when it was critical, when it was
- 8:46Speaker 3: time to make that big save, he made it. And
- 8:49Speaker 3: that was the difference. There was one save that whole
- 8:52Speaker 3: playoff series, the Stanley Cup Finals was one save. Stuart
- 8:55Speaker 3: Skinner made it and Bobrovski, sorry Stuart Skinner did make
- 8:58Speaker 3: it on the Ryan Hart shot. Bobrovski makes it on
- 9:00Speaker 3: the Blockers save. That was the difference. But that is
- 9:03Speaker 3: where the is that Bobrowski has that capability to make
- 9:07Speaker 3: that weird, you know, random Russian dolls save or you're
- 9:12Speaker 3: kind of coming out of you know, anyway, it's crazy.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Just when you think he's down and out. This is
- 9:18Speaker 3: no Bullstoy premium ballot round. Shit.
- 9:21Speaker 2: They go very good. Yeah, teams, I did like that.
- 9:24Speaker 3: When you get me, when you go very good. Yeah, yeah,
- 9:27Speaker 3: you're just like this guy.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Never Special teams Edmonton edge of the power play thirty percent,
- 9:34Speaker 1: Florida's at twenty three point two, but Florida's penalty killed
- 9:37Speaker 1: eighty seven point nine. Special teams always critical Florida here.
- 9:44Speaker 3: I mean they've scored and what how many consecutive games Edmonton.
- 9:47Speaker 3: I think they've figured something out on their power play.
- 9:49Speaker 3: But I mean, you're you're getting the best power play
- 9:51Speaker 3: in the playoffs versus the best penalty kill. That is
- 9:54Speaker 3: going to be where it happens on the offensive side,
- 9:57Speaker 3: because if they can shut that down, you know, you're
- 9:59Speaker 3: gonna shut down a lot of Edmonton's offense and you're
- 10:02Speaker 3: gonna have to rely five on five, which they've been
- 10:04Speaker 3: great in the past two series. So it is razor
- 10:07Speaker 3: thin these margins. But listen, don't sleep on the Florida
- 10:12Speaker 3: Panthers power play with Sam Ryan Hartbeck. They were anemic
- 10:15Speaker 3: without him, and now that he's healthy, they looked very
- 10:18Speaker 3: good in Game five against Carolina.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And I'll go the intangibles. This is courtesy of you.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Oilers Panthers series mark in the third final rematch across
- 10:26Speaker 1: the last forty two years Islanders Oilers eighty three, eighty four,
- 10:29Speaker 1: Penguins Red Wings eight nine, and both of those occurrences,
- 10:32Speaker 1: Gretzky and Crosby rebounded from a loss their Stanley Cup
- 10:36Speaker 1: Final debut to get redemption and earn their first championship.
- 10:39Speaker 1: You know the famous start we all know his hockey fans.
- 10:41Speaker 1: The Oilers were leaving and they saw they looked in
- 10:43Speaker 1: the Islanders dressing when all the guys were beating up
- 10:45Speaker 1: and like just moaning and growing like, oh.
- 10:46Speaker 2: That's what it did. Those guys beat us. They won.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I look at the sacrifice natement. That was the lesson
- 10:51Speaker 1: the Oilers needed, and then they beat the Islanders and
- 10:52Speaker 1: they're on their way. McDavid can join Gretzky and Crosby
- 10:55Speaker 1: in another list. After capturing the consp by last year,
- 10:57Speaker 1: McDavid again among the list of contenders for the award.
- 11:00Speaker 1: He's got six goals, twenty assists twenty six points in
- 11:02Speaker 1: six sixteen games. If he wins again, he joined Gretzky
- 11:06Speaker 1: and Krasman a short list of skaters of multiple cons
- 11:08Speaker 1: by wins. How about this list, Patty Waugh, Mario Lemieux,
- 11:12Speaker 1: Bobby Orr and Bernie Parant As a sign used to say,
- 11:15Speaker 1: only the Lord saves more than Bernie Parant. I just
- 11:18Speaker 1: think Connor McDavid right now, Jinny is a highly motivated cat.
- 11:22Speaker 1: We picked Canada win their first s GEPT in three
- 11:23Speaker 1: two years. The intangible, which is McDavid oilers in seven.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I mean, I gotta ask both of you guys too,
- 11:30Speaker 3: like as hockey fans as well, does this not give
- 11:33Speaker 3: you chills? Like Crosby did it where he lost and
- 11:37Speaker 3: won the next year, Gretzky did it Like how poetic
- 11:40Speaker 3: is it? And isn't that the beautiful thing about sports?
- 11:42Speaker 3: The passing of the baton. You got Connor McDavid with
- 11:45Speaker 3: the opportunity to do what Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby
- 11:48Speaker 3: did and it's just like the eras shifting. Crosby's kind
- 11:51Speaker 3: of a couple of years away from retiring, then you're
- 11:54Speaker 3: gonna have McDavid's gonna take this mantle, and then who's
- 11:56Speaker 3: the next kid that's gonna have this kind of tell
- 11:59Speaker 3: me potentially, we don't know, but like that's the beautiful
- 12:03Speaker 3: thing about sports is this, Like everything else sucks is
- 12:06Speaker 3: so boring, God damn NHL playoffs, but this moment is
- 12:10Speaker 3: what makes it all worth. It is like Connor has
- 12:12Speaker 3: a chance, and I don't know how you feel Canada winning.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Connor gets let's go the Connor gets the con smythe
- 12:19Speaker 3: potentially and the Stanley Cup what he's been chasing. I mean,
- 12:23Speaker 3: how does that make you feel? I get chills just
- 12:25Speaker 3: thinking about it.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I agree, that's why. To me, it just feels like destiny.
- 12:28Speaker 1: This is a different McDavid. You and I both called
- 12:29Speaker 1: the Kings to win Oilers one. We both called Vegas
- 12:32Speaker 1: to win Allers one. We're not picking against Oilers again,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and that stands for the second foul. I'm not doing
- 12:36Speaker 1: it again. Oiler's power play goal each of the last
- 12:38Speaker 1: five games. Tal Gemy, your prediction, j D and I
- 12:40Speaker 1: clearly both going Oilers.
- 12:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going Oilers in seven. I think there's so
- 12:46Speaker 4: much I mean, I keep thinking about, you're gonna keep
- 12:48Speaker 4: me on the road for two weeks.
- 12:51Speaker 3: That's what you want, you son of a bitch.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I want planes, trains and automobiles for two weeks, absolutely
- 12:59Speaker 4: between Night and Florida.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Wearing the same underwear since Tuesday exactly.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Those aren't pillows anyways. I just keep thinking about Connor
- 13:08Speaker 4: McDavid on Amazon, just absolutely losing it in the locker
- 13:13Speaker 4: room and how just how wild the moment that was
- 13:16Speaker 4: to witness as a fan, and like him scoring the
- 13:18Speaker 4: winner at four Nations, and you know, it's kind of
- 13:22Speaker 4: crazy to talk about legacy a player who's not even
- 13:25Speaker 4: been in the league that long, but like he wins
- 13:27Speaker 4: the Consumite and they win a cup and they bring
- 13:30Speaker 4: the cup back to Canada. Like Connor McDavid for me,
- 13:32Speaker 4: is he's in the Gretzky zone with like Sid and
- 13:35Speaker 4: Ovechkin and these other guys.
- 13:37Speaker 3: If he puts that on his mantle, with.
- 13:39Speaker 4: All the other incredible things he's done, he's officially like
- 13:42Speaker 4: on NHL Mount Rushmore for me. And that's why I'm
- 13:45Speaker 4: so stoked to see how the series goes.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Oh and him and his wife just opened up this
- 13:51Speaker 3: new bar furniture store in downtown Edmonton. I'm gonna check
- 13:54Speaker 3: it out, give you a review. Nice fucking guy just
- 13:57Speaker 3: just pissing excellence right everywhere he turns God. And all
- 14:01Speaker 3: he needed was Jason Mrs. To be there one training
- 14:05Speaker 3: camp to turn it all around. You go to teach
- 14:07Speaker 3: these guys about culture togetherness.
- 14:11Speaker 1: I think said all that Florida on the road is
- 14:13Speaker 1: unbelievable high ouctin on the road.
- 14:15Speaker 2: So I will say this. They've scored five or one
- 14:17Speaker 2: goals in a game on seven occasions.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Bett particular has been great in the playoffs, plus twenty
- 14:21Speaker 1: seven gold differential away from home. So if ever there
- 14:23Speaker 1: was a team that's gonna be undeterred by game one
- 14:26Speaker 1: on the road, watch them just steal Game one and
- 14:28Speaker 1: game two and to go, oh my god, here come
- 14:29Speaker 1: the Panthers.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Oh unflappable. But that's where the whole ice really comes
- 14:33Speaker 3: in effect, is that they can win and stand pat
- 14:36Speaker 3: at home. The Edmonton Oilers. They can beat Florida on
- 14:40Speaker 3: the road. So I think it's one of those If
- 14:42Speaker 3: I'm in that room, I'm like, boys, we get this one.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Like I see the light at the end of the tunnel.
- 14:47Speaker 3: These sons of bitches.
- 14:50Speaker 1: By the way, speaking of Canada, eighteen years between Steele
- 14:52Speaker 1: like a final appearances six to twenty twenty four.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Oil, there's the first Canadian team.
- 14:56Speaker 1: To reach the final and back to back here since
- 14:58Speaker 1: they did it back in eighty seven eighty eight they
- 15:00Speaker 1: won two straight Cups over the Flyers and the Bruins.
- 15:03Speaker 1: All right, let's do a little bit.
- 15:04Speaker 3: How many years? How many years since Canada hasn't won
- 15:07Speaker 3: a Cup?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Thirty two?
- 15:08Speaker 3: One more time for the fans in the back. How
- 15:10Speaker 3: long say.
- 15:12Speaker 2: It like you mean it with some balls? How long?
- 15:16Speaker 2: Thirty two years? It's gonna end this?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yeah, come on, let's get into a little bit of Dallas,
- 15:20Speaker 1: Carolina quickly before we get to our special guest, by
- 15:22Speaker 1: the way, Connor Garland, because we did not talk with
- 15:24Speaker 1: the Dallas Stars and this is still making rounds.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Jake Cottingrew's specific quote is.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Saying that he was embarrassed after getting pulled by Peter Debauer.
- 15:31Speaker 2: You have two goals in I mean two shots. Wasn't
- 15:34Speaker 2: two shots, but.
- 15:35Speaker 3: No, it was too shots.
- 15:36Speaker 2: It was two shots shots.
- 15:37Speaker 1: And Bower basically said, listen to us, it's a critical game.
- 15:40Speaker 1: It's a game five. I gotta turn to mymento a round.
- 15:42Speaker 1: I'm not blaming it all on Jake, but I do
- 15:44Speaker 1: think he's going to make those plays at urt Is.
- 15:47Speaker 2: You know, he didn't call it his goalie.
- 15:49Speaker 1: He don't call his coach because he just said listen,
- 15:50Speaker 1: I was embarrassed by and I wasn't expecting it. He
- 15:52Speaker 1: did not have a great appearance against the Oilers, and
- 15:55Speaker 1: this is the second straight year that's happened, despite the
- 15:57Speaker 1: fact he's been a good playoff goalie with the exception
- 16:00Speaker 1: of the last two Western Conferences against the Oilers. How
- 16:02Speaker 1: do you see this team? De bower people, people are
- 16:04Speaker 1: called Peter Moore be fired right now.
- 16:05Speaker 2: In Dallas. It's been crazy.
- 16:07Speaker 3: It's the petswick Waw scenario. Gets me is the fuck
- 16:11Speaker 3: out of here, you know what. It just made it
- 16:16Speaker 3: worse that they plopped the backup goalie in the middle
- 16:21Speaker 3: of the benches and he's got to listen to Ray
- 16:22Speaker 3: Ferraro just mumble his way and fumble his way through,
- 16:26Speaker 3: not like rightfully, so like Ray Ferrars standing there like
- 16:29Speaker 3: I don't want to shit talk this kid. But they're like,
- 16:32Speaker 3: hey ray On, whoever's the ESPN producer or whatever, Hey
- 16:35Speaker 3: ray you gotta talk about this guy getting pulled, and
- 16:37Speaker 3: he's like, Jake Andrew's right there, like trying not to cry,
- 16:40Speaker 3: and he's on camera talking about Jake Andrew getting pulled,
- 16:46Speaker 3: and Jake Andrews sitting not but two feet from him.
- 16:49Speaker 3: So I'm just like he was kind of like it's embarrassing,
- 16:51Speaker 3: Like you're on display. You want to crawl into the ice.
- 16:53Speaker 3: You want to crawl under your under your covers with
- 16:55Speaker 3: a with a pint of ice cream and just watch
- 16:58Speaker 3: Chaco la. I mean, it's just it's sad. And I
- 17:03Speaker 3: would be stoff Is if I was him, And you know,
- 17:07Speaker 3: he he carted that goddamn lifeless corpse of a Dallas
- 17:11Speaker 3: Stars team all the way to the conference finals when
- 17:13Speaker 3: those guys weren't scoring and allowed them to kind of
- 17:16Speaker 3: get there. So for him to kind of Pete to Boor,
- 17:18Speaker 3: And I love Pete de Boor as a coach and
- 17:20Speaker 3: what he's done in his tenure there in his career,
- 17:24Speaker 3: but I just don't think it was a good luck.
- 17:26Speaker 3: I think you got to die with your best players,
- 17:27Speaker 3: and whether you're giving them a spark and pulling them,
- 17:30Speaker 3: I think you should put him back in after the
- 17:31Speaker 3: second period.
- 17:33Speaker 1: And for the heart I say about that, I like
- 17:35Speaker 1: Hurricanes Conference final twice the past few seasons.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Still tucking Hurricanes, well.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Just one thought, just one victory to show for it.
- 17:40Speaker 1: They respect to bring back the same quarrel though Brent
- 17:42Speaker 1: Burns is forty needs a new contract, asks his fellow defensive.
- 17:45Speaker 2: To beat you or Lof. I just want to quickly
- 17:47Speaker 2: hit you on the defenseman, Burns Orlof, what do you do?
- 17:51Speaker 3: I love Burnsy, It's one of my favorites. If you
- 17:54Speaker 3: can get him back at a you know, discount, and
- 17:57Speaker 3: he wants to come back and maybe play another year.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I don't know how much longer he wants to play.
- 18:01Speaker 3: I mean that guy could would play forever if he could.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Uh yeah, you put them on the third pair and
- 18:07Speaker 3: bring some new and I think, orl Off, you gotta
- 18:10Speaker 3: allowed to leave and walk. And I just think what
- 18:16Speaker 3: happened in the conference finals. I mean it hurt me
- 18:20Speaker 3: in my career at times. I was playing severely injured
- 18:24Speaker 3: before they started doing that pussy thing where they everybody,
- 18:28Speaker 3: everybody says all their injuries, so you feel bad for him,
- 18:31Speaker 3: and like, I wish I had that when I was
- 18:34Speaker 3: playing because I could have just released all the Yeah,
- 18:36Speaker 3: I got to realise all the concussions and torn laborams
- 18:39Speaker 3: and all the all the tortol and drugs I was
- 18:42Speaker 3: taken so I could play these games and fractured foots.
- 18:45Speaker 3: But a lot of those series I got, you know,
- 18:48Speaker 3: abused a little bit, so they you know, and that
- 18:50Speaker 3: hurts you in contract talks, And that's exactly what happened
- 18:52Speaker 3: to him. He got really really taken advantage of in
- 18:55Speaker 3: that series, and you know, I just think that's gonna
- 18:58Speaker 3: hurt him. Come contract talks, and I think he's gonna
- 19:00Speaker 3: end up going somewhere else.
- 19:02Speaker 2: And one last lot just to pig get back to
- 19:04Speaker 2: like a wound and new you love.
- 19:05Speaker 1: The stat Panthers was sort a new NHL record for
- 19:08Speaker 1: most games played by one team and three year span.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Kurt records three hundred and nine games set by the
- 19:13Speaker 1: Stars from ninety seven to two thousand the Red Wings
- 19:15Speaker 1: from six to nine. Both those teams lost the Cup
- 19:19Speaker 1: out the end of those three year runs. Fatigue may
- 19:20Speaker 1: be a factor, but I mean first rematch in the
- 19:23Speaker 1: last forty two years. Again, it's amazing to think, oh,
- 19:26Speaker 1: three hundred and nine games.
- 19:27Speaker 3: What crazy three hundred and nine and the guys that
- 19:30Speaker 3: have been there for all three years, and you know,
- 19:32Speaker 3: I'm sure there's some injuries and it's hard to play
- 19:34Speaker 3: consecutive I think Phil Kessel's had like three hundred and
- 19:38Speaker 3: seven consecutive games and kind of when he was going
- 19:42Speaker 3: to the finals with playoffs. But yeah, I just think
- 19:46Speaker 3: it's great. It doesn't seem like you'd think fatigue would
- 19:48Speaker 3: come into effect. It doesn't look like it. It looks
- 19:50Speaker 3: like they're fresh. They looked fresh against Carolina because I think,
- 19:54Speaker 3: you know, they had some easy not that they had
- 19:56Speaker 3: easy walks, but I think this year was easier than
- 19:58Speaker 3: the last few for them just to get through Tampa
- 20:01Speaker 3: was really the only team that put up any fight. Yeah,
- 20:04Speaker 3: it's it's impressive, man, It's impressive with that culture and
- 20:07Speaker 3: organization has done to turn things around once again. I
- 20:10Speaker 3: was there to show them the way. I showed them
- 20:13Speaker 3: what culture means. The year after I left, they realized
- 20:16Speaker 3: that this is not sustainable as a culture to have
- 20:21Speaker 3: people and players like this, So we need to really
- 20:23Speaker 3: overhaul everything. And that's what I do. I expose the cracks.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Well, it's an underreported story, Lumber. You're getting here in
- 20:29Speaker 2: NHL and scripted how Jason de Murr's helped change.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Hockey A franchises. Yes, if you looked, Have you looked?
- 20:37Speaker 3: Three of the four teams in the conference finals. I
- 20:39Speaker 3: played for Culture, that's true, and they all turned things
- 20:43Speaker 3: around when I left Culture.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Additioned by subtraction, he's just kidding, all right?
- 20:49Speaker 1: Still to come here on NHL unscripted Connor Garland the
- 20:52Speaker 1: Queen's gambit.
- 20:53Speaker 2: That's right, huge chess guy. Also coming up a World
- 20:56Speaker 2: championship forward team in the JD. You're gonna love them.
- 20:59Speaker 3: World championship goals. Put some respect on his name. Baby next.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Got a world champion in the house.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Our next guest a fifth rout pick one hundred and
- 21:20Speaker 1: twenty third overall the twenty fifteen NHL drapt by the
- 21:23Speaker 1: Arizona Coyotes. This past season, he posted fifty points for
- 21:26Speaker 1: the second time in his four seasons with the Vancouver Canucks.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Most recently, he was a member of the national team,
- 21:31Speaker 1: the bottom gold for America and the double IHF World
- 21:34Speaker 1: Championships the first time since nineteen thirty three. Welcome Connord Garland.
- 21:38Speaker 1: NHL descripted how you doing.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Man, good? Thank you for having me, guys.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Well, first and foremost World championship. Man, what an incredible
- 21:44Speaker 1: story for you guys. What was the experience like for you?
- 21:47Speaker 5: It was awesome. You know, it's it's a grind of
- 21:51Speaker 5: a tournament. It's about twenty six days you go there.
- 21:54Speaker 5: I think the first of May we met in Germany
- 21:58Speaker 5: and then we had a little bit of a training
- 21:59Speaker 5: camp and it's slow at the start, but what's the
- 22:02Speaker 5: game's kicking? It really goes by fast. Just to finish
- 22:05Speaker 5: the way we did was just just so special and
- 22:07Speaker 5: such a fun group to be a part of. You know,
- 22:10Speaker 5: it felt it felt like we had to win, just
- 22:12Speaker 5: with all we went through as a team and how
- 22:14Speaker 5: much fun we had it it was it was the
- 22:15Speaker 5: right way to finish.
- 22:17Speaker 3: You've represented US now for a couple of tournaments, say
- 22:22Speaker 3: the least. What was different about this team for you?
- 22:25Speaker 3: And and and what was just the feeling in that
- 22:27Speaker 3: locker room from jump?
- 22:30Speaker 5: You know, the two other teams I was on had
- 22:32Speaker 5: a lot of success. We went I believe six and one.
- 22:36Speaker 5: We won about eight games in a row and then
- 22:38Speaker 5: lost in the Semis. Uh. The other team we went
- 22:40Speaker 5: undefeated to the Semis. So the difference about this team
- 22:43Speaker 5: was we kind of got, you know, beat pretty good
- 22:46Speaker 5: early on in the tournament by Switzerland, and then we
- 22:49Speaker 5: we were up five to one against Norway and we
- 22:52Speaker 5: ended up having to win in overtime. They scored five
- 22:55Speaker 5: straight the third. So after that game, we kind of
- 22:58Speaker 5: we had a lot of changes, We worked on some
- 23:00Speaker 5: stuff in our system, made a couple of lineup changes,
- 23:03Speaker 5: and as a group, we kind of bought in and
- 23:05Speaker 5: it was just nice to have a wake up call
- 23:07Speaker 5: and kind of get your teeth kicked in by Switzerland
- 23:09Speaker 5: early on. And and we had we had a lot
- 23:11Speaker 5: of veterans that proud and and we weren't going to
- 23:14Speaker 5: be another US team that lost in the quarters or
- 23:16Speaker 5: you know, so we were really proud of how we
- 23:18Speaker 5: bounced back after that.
- 23:19Speaker 1: How about Tage Thompson's overtime winning the celebration after that,
- 23:22Speaker 1: How sweet was that?
- 23:23Speaker 5: Yeah, he gives me goosebumps when you say it, like
- 23:25Speaker 5: in my neck. It's the greatest. It's the greatest feeling
- 23:29Speaker 5: I've had in the game. Uh, you know, I I
- 23:32Speaker 5: I've lost a lot in the semi finals or finals
- 23:34Speaker 5: in my career in junior and very good league and
- 23:36Speaker 5: the NHL last year we lost, so it's to get
- 23:40Speaker 5: on the other side of it. Was such a great feeling.
- 23:42Speaker 5: I was, I was up next, I was changing for him.
- 23:44Speaker 5: So I was sitting kind of trying to focus, uh,
- 23:48Speaker 5: trying to figure out. I thought Fiala was coming out.
- 23:50Speaker 5: So I was like, Oh, this is gonna be a
- 23:51Speaker 5: tough task on the big ice. And uh, someone one
- 23:54Speaker 5: of the coaches, I believe it was night Or was
- 23:56Speaker 5: right behind me and he just said, you know, f
- 23:58Speaker 5: and finish it. And I was like, please finish it.
- 24:01Speaker 5: So when when when you know, when I heard him
- 24:04Speaker 5: yell first it was I couldn't get over the boards
- 24:06Speaker 5: fast enough. It was a great, great feeling.
- 24:09Speaker 3: You guys, DIDs such a classy move at the end,
- 24:11Speaker 3: Uh with the Johnny goodro jersey. Was that something planned?
- 24:14Speaker 3: And and you know it was a guy that's smaller
- 24:18Speaker 3: in stature but plays a big game. You know, what
- 24:20Speaker 3: did Johnny mean to you? And what did that moment
- 24:23Speaker 3: mean to you as a whole.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't believe it was planned. I believe Zach
- 24:27Speaker 5: went and got it himself. And when he when he
- 24:31Speaker 5: brought it out with the captains, we got around, we
- 24:33Speaker 5: said let's take a picture with it with the trophy.
- 24:35Speaker 5: Awesome And we went up there and I remember him
- 24:37Speaker 5: telling the guy who was representing the i HF that,
- 24:40Speaker 5: you know, we're not we're not taking a normal photo.
- 24:42Speaker 5: We're gonna have the jersey and uh, you know, it
- 24:44Speaker 5: was pretty cool, pretty special to be a part of that.
- 24:46Speaker 5: It's just Johnny was, you know, kind of embodied USA Hockey.
- 24:50Speaker 5: I think USA Hockey's really trying to change what the
- 24:53Speaker 5: World Championships means to a lot of players. It's, you know,
- 24:56Speaker 5: used to be kind of a vacation and you go
- 24:58Speaker 5: over there and you play and whatever happens happens. Now it's,
- 25:01Speaker 5: you know, we want a lot of guys, you know,
- 25:03Speaker 5: our top end players to go and try to win
- 25:05Speaker 5: each year and be a powerhouse and you know in
- 25:09Speaker 5: international hockey. So he was one of the guys that
- 25:11Speaker 5: would always go when he wasn't in the playoffs. And
- 25:13Speaker 5: for me personally, I met him on my tour BC.
- 25:15Speaker 5: I was fifteen years old and Jerry York brought him
- 25:18Speaker 5: out of their locker room to introduce him to me,
- 25:20Speaker 5: and it was like seeing you know, my idol. It
- 25:23Speaker 5: was it was unbelievable. He's one of the first guys
- 25:25Speaker 5: at that size that you know, undersize used to be
- 25:27Speaker 5: five nine, five ten and I'm five, you know, seven
- 25:30Speaker 5: five eight, and that's what he was. So to see
- 25:31Speaker 5: somebody at that statue dominate college hockey and then the NHL,
- 25:35Speaker 5: it just gave me so much motivation. And you know,
- 25:38Speaker 5: he was a special, special player and.
- 25:40Speaker 2: A special one for you guys. Paying tribute to him
- 25:42Speaker 2: like that.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Talk with Connor Garland right now, Connor, let's talk about
- 25:45Speaker 1: this year coming up in Vancouver again. Lots of challenges
- 25:47Speaker 1: and a new coach now and Adam foot what's been
- 25:49Speaker 1: the message so far the footy.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Have you spoken to him?
- 25:52Speaker 5: We're speaking tomorrowight. Just actually just we were trying to
- 25:54Speaker 5: connect Cauro up. But yeah, we've just been texting and
- 25:58Speaker 5: he was one of the people who texted me after
- 26:00Speaker 5: kind of every game when I was over there. So's
- 26:03Speaker 5: he's awesome. It's obviously different when he's a head coach,
- 26:06Speaker 5: the relationship will be different, but as an assistant, you know,
- 26:08Speaker 5: he's just one of the you know, one of the
- 26:10Speaker 5: guys you'd love to play for and very smart, very tactical. Uh,
- 26:14Speaker 5: but yeah, we we have a lot of challenges up front.
- 26:16Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, our decor is one of the best
- 26:18Speaker 5: in the league. We probably have the best goal in Tanna,
- 26:20Speaker 5: But up front, we got to have some guys have
- 26:22Speaker 5: some big gears for us, myself included, and uh, you know,
- 26:25Speaker 5: I think we can we can meet another playoff team
- 26:28Speaker 5: if if we have if we have some guys up front,
- 26:30Speaker 5: we really have some good years. Uh.
- 26:33Speaker 3: I want to take it back a little bit to
- 26:34Speaker 3: the start. You know, you played for my alma mater,
- 26:37Speaker 3: monkd and Wildcats. Uh, you know, talk about that organization
- 26:41Speaker 3: because you know, being a guy from Situate, mass Like,
- 26:45Speaker 3: how does that decision come to be? And then you know,
- 26:49Speaker 3: how was it for you going away from home going
- 26:50Speaker 3: to Monkedon and and playing on that team that you
- 26:53Speaker 3: know is owned by Robert Irving and they run that
- 26:55Speaker 3: like an NHL franchise.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good way to put it. It was. Uh,
- 26:59Speaker 5: it was like the mini NHL at sixteen, And that's
- 27:02Speaker 5: that was one of the main reasons I went about
- 27:04Speaker 5: how they treated their players. And the coach at the
- 27:06Speaker 5: time was a guy named Danny Flynn. I don't know
- 27:08Speaker 5: if you had them, JD, but.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I'll get through it, and then I need you after
- 27:12Speaker 3: you explain it, I need your best flinnrism.
- 27:14Speaker 5: And at the end of this he was he was
- 27:16Speaker 5: awesome for me. He met with me when I was
- 27:19Speaker 5: young and explained to me how it was going to be.
- 27:21Speaker 5: And you know, Ivan Barberschef, it just signed there from
- 27:24Speaker 5: Russia and we were both the same age. So the
- 27:26Speaker 5: plan was for us to go there and play three
- 27:29Speaker 5: years together and then hopefully both turn pro. So it
- 27:33Speaker 5: seemed like just such a good fit for me. And
- 27:36Speaker 5: you know, I thought, you know, obviously passing up college
- 27:39Speaker 5: is tough, but I thought to play in the NHL
- 27:40Speaker 5: is what I always wanted to do, and I thought
- 27:42Speaker 5: that route gave me the best chance.
- 27:45Speaker 3: And give me your best flinnerism right now, because coach
- 27:49Speaker 3: Flynn had the best one liners and never ran out
- 27:54Speaker 3: of him. So mine was, you can't help the club
- 27:56Speaker 3: if you're out in the pub. Yes, yeh, what was
- 27:59Speaker 3: your best flinnerism that you got?
- 28:01Speaker 5: I don't know if I have a line. I just
- 28:03Speaker 5: I just always remember being young and not understanding why
- 28:07Speaker 5: after games he would make us wait an hour. You know,
- 28:11Speaker 5: the game would end and you would get your do
- 28:13Speaker 5: your routine and get your suit and you're just sit
- 28:15Speaker 5: in the room for an hour. And at my age,
- 28:17Speaker 5: I just thought I just want to go home play
- 28:19Speaker 5: video games. But I never understood he was just keeping
- 28:21Speaker 5: the older guys. They're as late as possible, so they
- 28:24Speaker 5: had no other option but to go home. So I
- 28:27Speaker 5: always found that to be funny after I figure out
- 28:29Speaker 5: what was going on.
- 28:31Speaker 1: You're a talented player and clearly an articulate guy. Which
- 28:34Speaker 1: gets is the fact you're really good at pissing other
- 28:36Speaker 1: people off. Where does that scale come from?
- 28:39Speaker 5: I think a little bit of it is just wanting
- 28:41Speaker 5: to win and understanding how I have to help affect
- 28:44Speaker 5: the team on a nightly basis. You know, as a
- 28:47Speaker 5: smaller guy, you know I'm competitive and I play inside
- 28:51Speaker 5: of people, and you know I usually are running my
- 28:54Speaker 5: mouth as much as I probably did when I was
- 28:55Speaker 5: twenty two twenty three trying to have an impact like that.
- 28:58Speaker 5: But now it's just I try to play a little
- 28:59Speaker 5: physical and be in people's faces quite a bit, but
- 29:03Speaker 5: probably more aggravating in practice.
- 29:05Speaker 3: So, oh are you ever?
- 29:07Speaker 2: You can speak to that?
- 29:08Speaker 3: Are you ever? Oh man? Did he have me squirrely bird?
- 29:12Speaker 3: A few times? Out there? I was in the I'd
- 29:14Speaker 3: be in the D line be like, I'm going to
- 29:16Speaker 3: kill this guy because he's so good and he's shop
- 29:19Speaker 3: talk with me the whole way.
- 29:20Speaker 5: True. Yeah, so that's where I like to have my
- 29:22Speaker 5: most fun. But yeah, games, it's just I just enjoy winning.
- 29:26Speaker 5: I I I so that that's really all comes down to.
- 29:30Speaker 5: But uh, you know, I like to tow the line
- 29:32Speaker 5: a little bit.
- 29:34Speaker 2: Did it?
- 29:34Speaker 3: Was it always something that did it hit you? You
- 29:37Speaker 3: know cause you look at and you know, I love
- 29:39Speaker 3: just going back to where we started and monked in
- 29:42Speaker 3: and you know, you had two years around sixty points
- 29:44Speaker 3: and then you explode for one hundred and twenty. Was
- 29:46Speaker 3: there something that flipped in your game or was it
- 29:48Speaker 3: more just the personnel around you or is it a
- 29:51Speaker 3: combination of both along with like you're taking on that
- 29:54Speaker 3: more fuck you approach that you've kind of taken with
- 29:57Speaker 3: you throughout your career, because it's very much how you
- 30:00Speaker 3: play is like you wouldn't expect a guy your size
- 30:03Speaker 3: to shit talk that much, and you do, and you
- 30:05Speaker 3: do it well, But then you're also going to the
- 30:07Speaker 3: net into the hard areas and you're not staying on
- 30:09Speaker 3: the perimeter.
- 30:10Speaker 5: Yeah. I actually got hurt my seventeen year old year
- 30:15Speaker 5: halfway through, so I played fifty games. But after about
- 30:18Speaker 5: thirty games that year, I really started to produce at
- 30:22Speaker 5: a high level. And then I broke my wrist, so
- 30:24Speaker 5: I was done for the season. But I knew going
- 30:26Speaker 5: into that summer that I had a real good chance
- 30:28Speaker 5: of continuing to produce the way I did, and that
- 30:32Speaker 5: was when I kind of took off and had those
- 30:33Speaker 5: two big seasons. But it just was taking time just
- 30:36Speaker 5: to figure out the league. And once I figured out
- 30:38Speaker 5: the league, I started to have some success. But I
- 30:41Speaker 5: really didn't play that hard. I wasn't very hard to
- 30:43Speaker 5: play against. I was more just a point producer. And
- 30:45Speaker 5: then when I got to the AA, you know, I
- 30:48Speaker 5: just struggled. So I tried to play hard and figure
- 30:52Speaker 5: out and then I saw success that way of getting
- 30:54Speaker 5: closer than that getting into corners four checking more. So
- 30:57Speaker 5: my game evolved is into a little bit of a
- 30:59Speaker 5: different player, but I always had the competitiveness, and I
- 31:02Speaker 5: just think it comes out a different way. Now.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Is it the analytical approach that you take, because like
- 31:08Speaker 3: you said, you're very you know, you're very well spoken,
- 31:11Speaker 3: you're very smart. Avid Chess player beat me a few
- 31:14Speaker 3: times in a hotel room late at night. But what
- 31:18Speaker 3: is it just figuring people out? Because for me it
- 31:20Speaker 3: was that as well, Like if I could play against
- 31:22Speaker 3: you enough times, I knew all your tendencies and then
- 31:24Speaker 3: I could really kind of enforce the way I want
- 31:27Speaker 3: to play. Is that the way you look at the
- 31:29Speaker 3: game on a game to game basis like how what
- 31:31Speaker 3: tendencies can I exploit?
- 31:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think more on a personal level. I
- 31:35Speaker 5: think more on just a reflecting on my game, on
- 31:39Speaker 5: what works, what doesn't work, why I'm playing bad? And
- 31:43Speaker 5: you know, the season is so long, so you're gonna
- 31:45Speaker 5: go into ruts and then you're gonna play well and
- 31:47Speaker 5: you're gonna be on the plane thinking I'm never gonna
- 31:49Speaker 5: play bad again, and then in six games you're contemplating,
- 31:53Speaker 5: you know, if you're ever going to get a contract again.
- 31:55Speaker 5: So it's really hard mentally, it's really hard, uh, you know, physically.
- 31:59Speaker 5: So how can I find to get back to my
- 32:03Speaker 5: game is is kind of what I try to think about.
- 32:06Speaker 5: And that's you know, I got to stand around the net.
- 32:08Speaker 5: I gotta shoot more. I can't be just on the
- 32:10Speaker 5: outside hoping for pucks. To come to my corner. And
- 32:13Speaker 5: I would say that's probably the biggest thing I've evolved in.
- 32:16Speaker 5: It's just when the game's going awry and it's two
- 32:18Speaker 5: or three games, how can I get back to it?
- 32:20Speaker 5: And I would say that's the analytical part.
- 32:23Speaker 1: I don't want to typecast all NHL players young athletes,
- 32:26Speaker 1: but generally I hear about stories about swiping right on
- 32:28Speaker 1: Tinder or playing PS five. I don't hear a lot
- 32:30Speaker 1: of guys playing chess. Connor where did this come from?
- 32:33Speaker 1: I'm sure it's a great asset. Playing chess, sharpens the bond, etcetera.
- 32:35Speaker 1: As JD says analytical, Where'd that come from?
- 32:40Speaker 5: The school I went to growing up? I got there
- 32:42Speaker 5: in the fifth grade. Was a private school and they
- 32:45Speaker 5: had a chess They started playing chess one day in school.
- 32:48Speaker 5: I had no idea how to play, and you know,
- 32:51Speaker 5: I got beat obviously very bad, and I just said,
- 32:55Speaker 5: and I got to get good at this game. So
- 32:56Speaker 5: I just started studying it. I started reading about it,
- 32:59Speaker 5: watching games online, trying to figure out and you know,
- 33:02Speaker 5: by the end of the year, I was probably the
- 33:04Speaker 5: top player in our in our grade. I just became
- 33:06Speaker 5: obsessed with it. So and then I on the COVID season,
- 33:09Speaker 5: I kind of got back to playing it with the
- 33:10Speaker 5: guys and it was a lot of fun and JD
- 33:13Speaker 5: some good games. Yeah, there's some really good players on
- 33:15Speaker 5: our team. Freddy GoChi was really good, Johan Marson, so
- 33:18Speaker 5: we had some good players. And now I play against
- 33:20Speaker 5: Quinn Hughes a lot, but we usually end up watching
- 33:22Speaker 5: his brother's play on TV, so it's kind of a
- 33:25Speaker 5: distracted game.
- 33:26Speaker 3: What what's your favorite open? For all? Because we have
- 33:30Speaker 3: a lot of avid chess fans that watch our show
- 33:32Speaker 3: with very smart, intellectual show fan base, what is your
- 33:37Speaker 3: favorite open?
- 33:37Speaker 5: I just go two ponds and then the two nights
- 33:42Speaker 5: just basic opens, A basic okay.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I also got to ask you over your shoulder, I
- 33:49Speaker 1: see something related to Jaws.
- 33:51Speaker 2: I don't know if that's Jaws. You're perfectly what is
- 33:53Speaker 2: that Spielberg fan?
- 33:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I have a I'm obsessed with the movie. My
- 33:56Speaker 5: son's name quint After actually have the character. I have
- 34:00Speaker 5: a character, correct, I have a massive portrait. I don't
- 34:03Speaker 5: know how much I can turn this, but he's really dude,
- 34:05Speaker 5: that's sick. He's right over there in the corner. So yeah,
- 34:09Speaker 5: I became a huge fan growing up. I have another
- 34:11Speaker 5: shark thing over there. So I grew up in Massachusetts,
- 34:15Speaker 5: right down the road from Marcus Viney where they filmed it,
- 34:17Speaker 5: and I became a huge fan at a young age.
- 34:19Speaker 5: So it's fiftieth anniversary.
- 34:20Speaker 3: I got about to says released, you have no idea
- 34:24Speaker 3: how hard Adnan is right now. He's the biggest he's
- 34:27Speaker 3: I mean, he's this, he does his cin andphile. I mean,
- 34:29Speaker 3: he could tell you everything about that movie. So that's awesome.
- 34:31Speaker 3: I didn't know that.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, I'll be going down this year, so it'll
- 34:34Speaker 5: be very exciting.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Well, one of the great stories you know about the
- 34:37Speaker 1: movie is that you know, they had so many challenges
- 34:39Speaker 1: with the shark, and so they delayed the appearance of
- 34:42Speaker 1: the shark, which everyone thought was so brilliant.
- 34:43Speaker 2: They did it more of the necessity because the shark
- 34:45Speaker 2: was such a pain of the ass.
- 34:46Speaker 5: Correct, Yes, yeah, yeah, they couldn't. They couldn't show it.
- 34:49Speaker 5: So then it became the fear was that you never
- 34:52Speaker 5: saw the shark, and then that that's kind of ended
- 34:55Speaker 5: up hurting sharks in the long run, because no nobody swims.
- 34:59Speaker 3: You got that right, I ain't swimming at all talk
- 35:03Speaker 3: about h little bit just your time with you know,
- 35:06Speaker 3: I think you know Rick talk it's been impactful on
- 35:08Speaker 3: your career from Arizona to Vancouver and what he's kind
- 35:12Speaker 3: of meant because you know he was bigger in size
- 35:15Speaker 3: than you, but you guys played a similar game in
- 35:17Speaker 3: the sense of going going to the hard areas and
- 35:19Speaker 3: making sure that you find ways to score in those tighters.
- 35:22Speaker 3: But what's kind of one thing talks ty you that's
- 35:25Speaker 3: kind of impacted your career in a positive way.
- 35:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I think structure is the number one thing. I
- 35:30Speaker 5: think you would know me as a younger player, I
- 35:32Speaker 5: kind of just relied on scoring, and you know, I'd
- 35:35Speaker 5: play about eleven twelve minutes a night, and you know,
- 35:38Speaker 5: if I didn't score, I didn't really impact the game.
- 35:40Speaker 5: So I think I went back my third season there
- 35:44Speaker 5: and we had a little bit of dispute in his
- 35:45Speaker 5: office about my role. You know, I had twenty two
- 35:49Speaker 5: goals a year before and led the team and I
- 35:50Speaker 5: was still on the third line playing twelve thirteen minutes.
- 35:53Speaker 5: So I just went in and I said, you know
- 35:55Speaker 5: what's going on here? And he was very blunt. So
- 35:59Speaker 5: you know, he talks about it now I think it's
- 36:01Speaker 5: become kind of a big story in Vancouver, but it
- 36:03Speaker 5: is true. Said to me, he said, you're not a
- 36:05Speaker 5: seventeen minute player. I can't play you that much. And
- 36:08Speaker 5: I said, just make me one. Then you know, work
- 36:09Speaker 5: with me, show me. And you know, he talks about
- 36:12Speaker 5: how as a coach it was the first time he
- 36:14Speaker 5: kind of you know, had a player, you know, you know,
- 36:18Speaker 5: almost remind you of, Yeah, that's my job. It's not
- 36:20Speaker 5: just system. You got to help these guys. And I
- 36:21Speaker 5: was young, and that's what he did. He worked with
- 36:24Speaker 5: me so much. We watched so much film. Uh kind
- 36:27Speaker 5: of after every three or four games, I'd be in
- 36:29Speaker 5: there and I remember sometimes he'd be like, go, this
- 36:32Speaker 5: is this is it right here? What are we doing?
- 36:33Speaker 5: And just you know, okay, okay, you make mental notes
- 36:36Speaker 5: of it, and then you know, fifty games later you're
- 36:39Speaker 5: improving and then he can trust you. So now you know,
- 36:42Speaker 5: twenty eight, twenty nine, and he leaned on me a
- 36:44Speaker 5: lot this year. Defensively, I p k now for him,
- 36:47Speaker 5: so you know, I've come a long way. But he
- 36:49Speaker 5: was a massive reason for it.
- 36:51Speaker 1: A guy who was a great player, great goal scorer.
- 36:53Speaker 1: You had a lot of jokes about his lack of conditioning.
- 36:55Speaker 1: The great Phil Castle. They have a great to fill
- 36:57Speaker 1: the fill story for us.
- 37:00Speaker 5: Uh, you know Phil, Phil, Phil's one of the best
- 37:04Speaker 5: teammates ever for me. He was an older guy who
- 37:09Speaker 5: you know, I idolized because he was in Boston and
- 37:13Speaker 5: you know, he just he could score from anywhere and
- 37:17Speaker 5: how well he skated. So I think one of the
- 37:20Speaker 5: one of my fair stories I tell a lot of
- 37:21Speaker 5: people is, you know, we had a power play play
- 37:23Speaker 5: once and it was a spread and someone got kicked
- 37:27Speaker 5: out of the face off, so I slid back up
- 37:29Speaker 5: top and I didn't go to my spot after that.
- 37:31Speaker 5: I thought it was over and whatever, and we went
- 37:34Speaker 5: in between periods and talk let me have it, and
- 37:37Speaker 5: he kind of left the room and then he came
- 37:39Speaker 5: back and he gave it to me again, and Phil
- 37:41Speaker 5: stepped in and said, hey, Rick, he's got it. He's good.
- 37:44Speaker 5: And I was so young at the time. My confidence
- 37:47Speaker 5: was shot. And I remember walking out for the period
- 37:49Speaker 5: and Phil's standing behind me. He's just telling me, man,
- 37:52Speaker 5: you are so good, like man one hundred and twenty
- 37:55Speaker 5: points in junior. Oh man, you are nasty, Like how
- 37:57Speaker 5: many goals do you have this year and we were
- 37:59Speaker 5: walking all the way through Geel and He's just pumped
- 38:01Speaker 5: me up the whole way. By the end of it,
- 38:02Speaker 5: I was like, he's right, yeah, real good. So I
- 38:06Speaker 5: just remember thinking about that, like, you know how you're
- 38:09Speaker 5: doing that for a twenty two year old kid. It
- 38:11Speaker 5: is pretty cool.
- 38:13Speaker 3: Yeah. He was always you know, I think people forget
- 38:17Speaker 3: that narrative about Phil that like he was a lot
- 38:20Speaker 3: more team first than people thought, and wanted to help guys,
- 38:23Speaker 3: and he just was so mentally in his own head
- 38:26Speaker 3: that you know, you'd sometimes lose it because he did buddy,
- 38:29Speaker 3: I'm done, Buddy, I can't play anymore. But like you're like,
- 38:33Speaker 3: he would always reach out and help guys and be
- 38:35Speaker 3: forthcoming with his time.
- 38:37Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. It was the sticks that year too. He
- 38:39Speaker 5: couldn't find after the Eastern Sticks ended, he couldn't he
- 38:42Speaker 5: couldn't find the right stick. So that was that was
- 38:44Speaker 5: probably the most laughs Iver had.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Were you there when you shave the boards down at Guila?
- 38:49Speaker 5: Yes? Yes, he was showing the spin on the boards.
- 38:52Speaker 5: He couldn't handle it on the.
- 38:53Speaker 6: Power play and he had Rick come out and he's
- 38:57Speaker 6: trying to get ripped fire and pucks at Rick. You
- 38:59Speaker 6: see the spin he had this poor guy from Gila
- 39:02Speaker 6: buffering down the boards.
- 39:04Speaker 3: He's probably right too, oh, I mean, yeah, he's He's
- 39:08Speaker 3: never wrong, Phil, that's for sure. He's never never wrong.
- 39:11Speaker 3: What I mean talk to me just about like, what
- 39:14Speaker 3: do you think, you know, lastly before we let you
- 39:17Speaker 3: go here, you know what, And it's tough because I
- 39:20Speaker 3: don't want to put you in a bad spot. So
- 39:22Speaker 3: it's just more like, what do you what are you
- 39:24Speaker 3: hoping for from this offseason with Vancouver? What do you
- 39:26Speaker 3: think this team needs to kind of take that next step,
- 39:29Speaker 3: get back to where you were two years ago, Because
- 39:31Speaker 3: I mean, you guys weren't far two years ago, even
- 39:33Speaker 3: though you were kind of riding a third string goalie
- 39:36Speaker 3: and she loves Yeah, yeah.
- 39:37Speaker 5: We were far. You know, we were far from making
- 39:40Speaker 5: this Staey Cup, obviously losing Game seven and you tip
- 39:43Speaker 5: your cap to the Oilers, but you know we were
- 39:45Speaker 5: in a dogfight that whole time. This year, we weren't
- 39:49Speaker 5: far off too. That's the worst part. Obviously we had
- 39:51Speaker 5: a lot of drum and a lot of storylines come
- 39:53Speaker 5: out of Vancouver, and you know, i'd say the water,
- 39:56Speaker 5: you know, on the outside was a lot rockier than
- 39:58Speaker 5: it felt like on the inside for us, But you know,
- 40:01Speaker 5: we were still in the hunt up until two games
- 40:03Speaker 5: left in the season. So yeah, Saint Louis goes on
- 40:06Speaker 5: a fourteen game run and that's tough. You got to
- 40:08Speaker 5: keep pace with them. But you know, I don't think
- 40:11Speaker 5: we're very far off. Obviously we you know, I'm not
- 40:14Speaker 5: a GM, I'm not a coach. I'm a player, and
- 40:16Speaker 5: I have to worry about, you know, getting back and
- 40:19Speaker 5: having a good year. My second half wasn't very good
- 40:21Speaker 5: after the four Nations break, and you know, I was
- 40:24Speaker 5: our top producer up front night fifty points and that's
- 40:26Speaker 5: not good enough for a playoff team. So I have
- 40:28Speaker 5: to have a better year. And I hope a lot
- 40:30Speaker 5: of guys are saying the same thing, which you know,
- 40:31Speaker 5: I know from talking to a lot of guys they are.
- 40:33Speaker 5: So we're a determined group. We're focused, and you know,
- 40:36Speaker 5: we got a lot of special players, and you know,
- 40:38Speaker 5: we got one of the best goalies in the league,
- 40:40Speaker 5: and I think that's always a recipe for success. But
- 40:43Speaker 5: you know, we get off to a good start. I
- 40:44Speaker 5: feel pretty good about our chances.
- 40:47Speaker 3: I love it. Accountability that's what every team needs. And lastly, man,
- 40:50Speaker 3: I know you just had a kid. Talk about playing
- 40:53Speaker 3: as you know, I knew you as a young, brash,
- 40:57Speaker 3: confident skilled young kids you know, no kids know nothing,
- 41:03Speaker 3: no family, and now you got that. How's it been
- 41:06Speaker 3: that adjustment of playing with the kid versus you know,
- 41:09Speaker 3: going home and playing chess online.
- 41:12Speaker 5: Yeah. What he wants to say is he knew me
- 41:13Speaker 5: when I was a young idiot who showed up at
- 41:16Speaker 5: the rink about thirty minutes before our meeting. So it
- 41:19Speaker 5: just talk.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Hey, we all grow into it. Hey, we all had
- 41:22Speaker 3: our we all had our things. I mean I was
- 41:24Speaker 3: still I was still an idiot at thirty exactly. Fantasy football. No,
- 41:28Speaker 3: what what's it been like? Man, just just playing with
- 41:32Speaker 3: a kid and the difference it it is it takes
- 41:34Speaker 3: to kind of compete in this league with that.
- 41:36Speaker 5: Yeah, No, it's it's it's unbelievable. It's uh, it definitely
- 41:39Speaker 5: changes real fast. You know. It's there's no like, hey,
- 41:43Speaker 5: can I go out to dinner with the guys on
- 41:45Speaker 5: a Friday night anymore? It's your home with your kid.
- 41:47Speaker 5: But he makes it so worth it and having him
- 41:50Speaker 5: at the glass and warm ups and you know, you know,
- 41:52Speaker 5: his godfather's you know, Quinn Hughes. So bringing him into
- 41:55Speaker 5: the rink and seeing him and guys like the Code
- 41:57Speaker 5: of Joshua and Brock Best who I'm really close with,
- 42:00Speaker 5: and having them hold them and it's pretty it's pretty awesome.
- 42:02Speaker 5: It's pretty special. But the off season has been great.
- 42:05Speaker 5: We're just you know, since I've been home, just spending
- 42:07Speaker 5: a lot of time with him, and he's starting to laugh,
- 42:10Speaker 5: he's starting to try to get words out and crawl.
- 42:12Speaker 5: So we've just had a great time together, you know,
- 42:15Speaker 5: and and it's, uh, it's awesome, and I'm just excited
- 42:18Speaker 5: for him to keep growing and be able to grow
- 42:20Speaker 5: up in a rink.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Last thing, do you want to ask a Cup Finals prediction?
- 42:24Speaker 2: Oilers or Panthers?
- 42:25Speaker 5: What do you got? Oh, it's too hard. They're just
- 42:28Speaker 5: both such fantastic teams.
- 42:29Speaker 3: I think, come on, I've already thought about that.
- 42:33Speaker 5: I would say it sounds weird, but I'd say the look,
- 42:37Speaker 5: the look on Connor's face after you know that boy,
- 42:40Speaker 5: he looks pretty, he looks pretty locked in. It's that's
- 42:43Speaker 5: a tough guy to beat when he's at his best. So, uh,
- 42:46Speaker 5: you know, obviously it's gonna be tough, but yeah, I'd
- 42:49Speaker 5: probably say I'd like the oilers.
- 42:51Speaker 3: Chances you play. You lived four years in Canada, Come
- 42:54Speaker 3: on Canada.
- 42:56Speaker 5: But but their arrivals and I will get in trouble
- 42:59Speaker 5: from Vancouver saying.
- 43:00Speaker 3: That, oh that that is true politically.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, so Ill, he's a smart man, smartman on
- 43:07Speaker 1: the ice, spartman offanks. Connor Garland, thanks so much for
- 43:10Speaker 1: the insight man again. Best to your son, Quint. What
- 43:12Speaker 1: a great name, and enjoy Jaw's fiftieth anniversary. We'll talk
- 43:14Speaker 1: to you soon.
- 43:15Speaker 5: Thanks many, thank you.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Well.
- 43:24Speaker 1: As you hit into the summer season, you're cinephile and sixty.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I think it's a great time to read a good book.
- 43:28Speaker 1: So I'm going through my list to the Holiday Reporter.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Tals a big fan his buddy' Seth one of the
- 43:33Speaker 1: writers there. They did a list of the top one
- 43:35Speaker 1: hundred books ever about film and television. Number seven on
- 43:37Speaker 1: that list is Julia Phillips's book You'll Never Eat Lunch
- 43:40Speaker 1: in This Town Again, Number seven.
- 43:42Speaker 2: All timeless.
- 43:43Speaker 1: So I gotta go pick this up. Checked it out
- 43:44Speaker 1: from the library, five hundred and sixty one pages. It
- 43:47Speaker 1: is a Scabbrous, Look Out of Hollywood and what went Down.
- 43:50Speaker 1: She was the producer of the Sting with Robert Redford
- 43:52Speaker 1: Paul Newman. One was the first one ever to win
- 43:54Speaker 1: an Academy Word for producing. Later is one of the
- 43:56Speaker 1: producers on Taxi Driver, Great Stories about Scorsese, and worked
- 43:59Speaker 1: with Steven Spielberg speaking of Connor Garland and Jaws.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Worked with Spielberg on Close Encounters. The Third Kind.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Eventually had a serious drug problem, was free basing cocaine
- 44:08Speaker 1: and was out of Hollywood.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Everyone was doing drugs.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but eventually I was able to reclaim her career somewhat.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But then Hollywood had changed in the eighties. All they
- 44:16Speaker 1: cared about was, you know, Top Gun and franchises aren't
- 44:18Speaker 1: the hell, it's you know what, I write a book.
- 44:21Speaker 1: I'm going to write a book and just blow up everybody.
- 44:23Speaker 1: And this book is an unbelievable read in terms of
- 44:25Speaker 1: candid tell All books. Here's her thoughts on Dom Simpson,
- 44:28Speaker 1: who was one of that he had producers of Top Gun.
- 44:31Speaker 1: He feels very free but expressing his preferences. We seem
- 44:33Speaker 1: to have revolved mainly around turning women over, and I'm
- 44:35Speaker 1: grateful we never get to intercourse, because I don't think
- 44:37Speaker 1: I'd like it very much his way. We stay tight friends,
- 44:40Speaker 1: but it is by silent mutual agreement that will be.
- 44:42Speaker 2: No more sex. So this is on taxi driver. Sir
- 44:45Speaker 2: says he's very worried about the editing.
- 44:46Speaker 1: What's going to be happening, So she says Marty calls him,
- 44:49Speaker 1: calls her sorry two in the morning and an intense murmur.
- 44:53Speaker 1: He says to me, there's only one way to deal
- 44:54Speaker 1: with Stanley Jaffe. I'm going to go and buy a gun,
- 44:56Speaker 1: a little gun. I'm a little person, and I'm going
- 44:58Speaker 1: to shoot him. I laugh, but Marty doesn't lift back.
- 45:01Speaker 1: I wish all these guys would stop hanging out with
- 45:03Speaker 1: John Millius, all these guys, he's antique guns. So also,
- 45:06Speaker 1: and all these guys have guns, I said, Marty, what
- 45:08Speaker 1: was shooting Stanley Jeaffey accomplished. I sit up in bed
- 45:11Speaker 1: and light a cigarette. I puffe it defiantly into the receiver.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Marty wheezes, is bad asthma. You're right, I can't shoot him.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Maybe just threaten him. Is it with a small gun
- 45:18Speaker 1: or a large gun? Marty makes a noise. I root
- 45:21Speaker 1: for this to be laughter, but of course it is
- 45:22Speaker 1: more wheezing. I decide to go for my strong producer performance. Marty,
- 45:25Speaker 1: you just keep cutting it the way you want to
- 45:27Speaker 1: cut it.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Let Michael lead. Deal with the Columbia. We're gonna be
- 45:29Speaker 2: release this movie in February. It is December. Don't worry.
- 45:31Speaker 1: We'll make it work later on. Again, Marty persists, I
- 45:34Speaker 1: know we'll make a very short Listen to deal.
- 45:35Speaker 2: I'm a short person here. What cuts can we do?
- 45:38Speaker 2: Later on?
- 45:38Speaker 1: We have to newly color the ending, and Marty cackles.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Look what it does to Marty's brains seems more pronounced
- 45:43Speaker 1: to me.
- 45:44Speaker 2: That's right. Marty chokes joyously. Isn't that great?
- 45:46Speaker 1: I cackle too, mostly at bent pleasure. Scarsese is one
- 45:49Speaker 1: of the few people I know who, with this statue,
- 45:51Speaker 1: have so much cloud. And he's also very sick and
- 45:54Speaker 1: very funny and entertaining man, and I love him. And lastly,
- 45:57Speaker 1: from Julia Phillips's.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Book, well More, Okay, we go one more.
- 46:02Speaker 1: She's trying to reclaimer career of this producer. He arrives
- 46:06Speaker 1: as my assistant Karen is about to leave. Some instinct
- 46:08Speaker 1: to me asks her to stay. I shoot to throw
- 46:10Speaker 1: up the movie, pile a bunch of pillows on my
- 46:12Speaker 1: bed for his head. My cat jumps on the bed
- 46:14Speaker 1: in front of Freddie's face. He jerk's back. I always
- 46:16Speaker 1: want to see your pussy, but I didn't know it
- 46:17Speaker 1: would be so soon. Julia Phillips, You'll never eat lunch
- 46:21Speaker 1: in this town again. This is a book if you
- 46:22Speaker 1: want to read what Hollywood is truly all about, the
- 46:24Speaker 1: nasty people that are involved in this, the salacious, lewd
- 46:27Speaker 1: and decent allegations. You will love this book and stories
- 46:30Speaker 1: with Steven Spielberg on The Close Encounters of the Third Kind,
- 46:32Speaker 1: she referred to Spielberg as difficult, demanding, arrogant, and she
- 46:35Speaker 1: said that prick wouldn't know the first thing about Hollywood.
- 46:37Speaker 1: I taught him to write in a first class limo,
- 46:39Speaker 1: and all of a sudden he got me fired with
- 46:40Speaker 1: this at a Close Encounters. Unbelievable story telling with Julia Phillips.
- 46:44Speaker 1: I didn't know what happened to her, essentially, because she
- 46:46Speaker 1: wrote this book and just told tales and everybody ripped everyone.
- 46:49Speaker 2: She never really worked in Hollywood again.
- 46:51Speaker 1: But we have the evidence of an unbelievable book for
- 46:53Speaker 1: all you women out there when I work in Hollywood.
- 46:55Speaker 1: You'll never eat lunch in this town again. Julia Phillips
- 46:57Speaker 1: available at.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Your local library. Let's get back to the hockey. Lane Lambert,
- 47:02Speaker 2: how it is his salad?
- 47:04Speaker 3: How do how do we recover after this?
- 47:07Speaker 1: Well, one of the best heads of the hair it
- 47:08Speaker 1: gets a job as a head coach of Seattle crack
- 47:10Speaker 1: and was an assistant to Berry Trotz in Nashville, Washington
- 47:13Speaker 1: and the Islanders. Was also the head coach of the
- 47:15Speaker 1: Islanders for Seeds and Half were replaced by Patrick Waugh Kracking.
- 47:19Speaker 1: As you and I have discussed, you do, you have
- 47:20Speaker 1: very nondescript Bland identity challenge team Lane Lambert. That's your
- 47:26Speaker 1: face of charisma, that's gonna bring the that's gonna put
- 47:29Speaker 1: asses in the seats, sixty year old Lane Lambert.
- 47:33Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean the one thing about Lane is like
- 47:38Speaker 3: he's kind of done a little bit of everything in
- 47:40Speaker 3: the league. So he's been a pepe coach, he's been
- 47:43Speaker 3: a penalty goal coach, he's been a you know, five
- 47:47Speaker 3: on five D coach, offensive coach, so he's kind of
- 47:49Speaker 3: knows every role. So I think, you know, having another
- 47:53Speaker 3: set of eyes and understanding what you need for each
- 47:56Speaker 3: of those positions is super important. So anxious to see
- 48:00Speaker 3: what he does. I mean, all of Seattle's moves have
- 48:05Speaker 3: been a little head scratching, but Lane Lambert's kind of
- 48:08Speaker 3: was the sexiest option other than Mitch love. So I
- 48:12Speaker 3: think it's interesting as the Seattle cracking, which is like, Okay,
- 48:17Speaker 3: let's see what they do and see what happens. And
- 48:20Speaker 3: I feel like they're very close to the edge of
- 48:22Speaker 3: just everything getting blown up. So they need to figure
- 48:25Speaker 3: out because they've got a good fan basic climate pledge,
- 48:27Speaker 3: and they need to honor that fan base and fucking
- 48:30Speaker 3: do something. And the thing that interests me with this
- 48:34Speaker 3: higher as well as I forgot to say, is I
- 48:37Speaker 3: mean he was part of the Maple Leafs this year,
- 48:39Speaker 3: so assistant coach associate coach learn under Craig Berube a
- 48:43Speaker 3: little bit. I mean, I think it was a good team.
- 48:46Speaker 3: He you look at them bringing him here, Mitch Marner,
- 48:51Speaker 3: Seattle cracking, ow fun, Seattle cracking.
- 48:56Speaker 2: I like, it's well done. That that is connecting some dots.
- 49:00Speaker 3: Well, fuck, I gotta do everything here. I got a
- 49:02Speaker 3: social media I gotta do the leads. Come on, help me,
- 49:07Speaker 3: help you speak of the leads.
- 49:08Speaker 2: Good to see Jillian going to see gle Gery len Ross.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Thank you for I was with her. I saw glengarygan Ross.
- 49:14Speaker 2: How was it? Speaking of the leads, it was great.
- 49:16Speaker 3: Speaking of the leads, he got the leads from the
- 49:19Speaker 3: dog shit leads, three leads that closed them. Patel, Yeah, Patel,
- 49:23Speaker 3: and the theater erupted.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Patel rather than Patel pull a bunch.
- 49:28Speaker 3: Of pollocks with their money and their socks.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Bil Burr feels like he's at living half of those
- 49:32Speaker 2: racist dietribes.
- 49:33Speaker 3: I feel like Bill Burr's Bill Burr plays Bill Burr.
- 49:37Speaker 3: I loved I mean Bob Odenkirk, Yeah, because I mean
- 49:42Speaker 3: the role that he was in was just amazing and
- 49:45Speaker 3: the way embodies it was. He got He got Kulkin
- 49:48Speaker 3: too break during the show.
- 49:50Speaker 2: He did what happened.
- 49:51Speaker 3: He just was doing that scene when he's talking when
- 49:54Speaker 3: he's talking about the sailor just did to the couple,
- 49:57Speaker 3: and he's like, and I had the pin and I
- 49:59Speaker 3: twisted the knight, you know, I twisted and twisted And
- 50:03Speaker 3: he's like pointing at Culkin, and Culkin's like visibly laughing,
- 50:07Speaker 3: and he walks away to kind of like do the
- 50:09Speaker 3: scene where he pulls the chair and he's almost addressing
- 50:12Speaker 3: the audience.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Yeah, this is after loss is big exit build.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and Culkin's still giggling in the corner, like holding
- 50:18Speaker 3: his mouth. So people were like kind of laughing and
- 50:20Speaker 3: oh nice and enjoying it a little bit because he
- 50:23Speaker 3: was like visibly breaking because I just thought it was funny. Yeah,
- 50:26Speaker 3: that was a great It's a very good show. Good concept.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Howt flips and switches at the end. Go see it
- 50:30Speaker 3: if you're in New York. Yeah, and tell him that
- 50:33Speaker 3: Jason Demurs sent you.
- 50:34Speaker 2: I love the Bilberd.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Michael mckeon'stein that second scene, just the interplay between Moss
- 50:38Speaker 1: and Aerono.
- 50:38Speaker 3: Yeah, well the first two. Yeah, it's one guy talking,
- 50:41Speaker 3: one guy making you know, it's just good writing. Quick mammot, Oh,
- 50:45Speaker 3: very quick, very fast, get to the point. Fifty minutes show. Yeah,
- 50:49Speaker 3: it's staccato, repetitive.
- 50:50Speaker 2: It's incredible. Last one for it.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Jonathan Taves has informed his Asian paperson as one hundred
- 50:54Speaker 1: percent committed to coming back to the NHL next season.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Thirty seven last played to April twenty three or three.
- 50:59Speaker 1: It's been two years, so you were on the record.
- 51:01Speaker 1: You went against Mike Rupp. You said, gabrielanis I was
- 51:03Speaker 1: gonna come back and make it impact. What do you
- 51:05Speaker 1: expect with Taves potentially coming back?
- 51:07Speaker 3: And I was right?
- 51:09Speaker 2: Yeah, if I just said I said you were, you
- 51:11Speaker 2: would to give Mike ruperts.
- 51:12Speaker 3: It's hard being right all the time. I don't understand.
- 51:14Speaker 3: I like being wrong. I enjoy it. I'm not some masochist.
- 51:18Speaker 3: I enjoy being wrong so much it turns me on
- 51:22Speaker 3: when I'm wrong. You'd rather be wrong, but you're rather
- 51:24Speaker 3: I tell everybody I'd rather be wrong because me being
- 51:26Speaker 3: right all the time. Oh, it's not good. It's not good.
- 51:29Speaker 3: It means everything's fucked anyway. Uh yeah, Back to Jonathan Taves.
- 51:34Speaker 3: I think he can impact the team. I mean, John
- 51:36Speaker 3: if uh you know, you got to I compare him
- 51:40Speaker 3: right now if I haven't seen him skate or play
- 51:43Speaker 3: John Tavera's esque and John Tavera's esque with a high
- 51:46Speaker 3: hockey IQ is able to impact the game. And the
- 51:49Speaker 3: issue now is that a lot of the young kids.
- 51:51Speaker 3: It's not the issue. But the league has never been
- 51:54Speaker 3: more young, never been more exciting, never been more offensively dominated,
- 51:58Speaker 3: but never been dumber in the hockey IQ and Jonathan
- 52:02Speaker 3: Taves is very high IQ. And you see the guys
- 52:06Speaker 3: that's why you see more players with high IQ in
- 52:09Speaker 3: the league having all of a sudden, these better seasons
- 52:12Speaker 3: are sticking around longer because then the youth that has
- 52:15Speaker 3: come in is not as smart and detail oriented. That's
- 52:18Speaker 3: why Corey Perry is still doing what Corey Perry does
- 52:21Speaker 3: at forty years old. And I think Jonathan Taves, if
- 52:23Speaker 3: he's in shape and healthy, I think he can really
- 52:25Speaker 3: help a team a good team. You shouldn't go to
- 52:28Speaker 3: a bad team. He should go to a high end team.
- 52:31Speaker 3: I could see him maybe going to a Colorado.
- 52:33Speaker 2: So third line center and a great team, second line
- 52:35Speaker 2: center and a bad team.
- 52:36Speaker 3: Is that fair? I think third line center all around
- 52:41Speaker 3: still effective.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Still guys can get things done. Three stars. Come on,
- 52:43Speaker 2: tell give us out a league we got.
- 52:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you were talking about the guys who were not
- 52:48Speaker 4: coming back from the pactors from last year's Cup run.
- 52:51Speaker 4: That was you know, Montour and Eckman, Larson being the
- 52:53Speaker 4: main guys. And I just think my selection Aaron Eckblad
- 52:57Speaker 4: has just taken it to a whole he Aron, Hey, Aron, exactly.
- 53:05Speaker 3: But yeah, He's just been.
- 53:08Speaker 2: There.
- 53:08Speaker 3: He is there.
- 53:09Speaker 7: He is Pinchevski's point eighty five points per game in
- 53:14Speaker 7: these playoffs and third in playoffs scoring among d men
- 53:18Speaker 7: eleven points in thirteen games.
- 53:20Speaker 4: I did a little stat digging. Here's what I came
- 53:22Speaker 4: up with, and I'm just gonna drop the mic on this.
- 53:24Speaker 4: Florida ten and three with him in the lineup, one
- 53:27Speaker 4: and three without him in the lineup. He missed four
- 53:29Speaker 4: games because of suspensions, eight and one in the playoffs.
- 53:33Speaker 4: When Aaron Ekblad gets a point, Boom, that's my selection.
- 53:38Speaker 3: Wow, Boom goes to Dynamite. That's a great one, all right, Ad,
- 53:41Speaker 3: then hit it.
- 53:42Speaker 1: I got Sasha Barkoff. He's won the Selki twice. Favorite
- 53:44Speaker 1: take on the trophy again this season. If he does win,
- 53:47Speaker 1: he'll be the sixth player to win three or more
- 53:49Speaker 1: Sealky trophies, join a list of Bob Gainey, Patrice Burgromp
- 53:52Speaker 1: Paboldatzuk you' Latin and Geek carbon Hill. He's captain of
- 53:55Speaker 1: Squad of three streets still like a file appearances. He's
- 53:57Speaker 1: eleventh player in hockey history to do that, just the
- 53:59Speaker 1: second to do it in the last forty years. Steven
- 54:02Speaker 1: stamp cost did with the Lightning and last year became
- 54:04Speaker 1: the first Finish born captain lift the Stanley Cup. You
- 54:06Speaker 1: think of all Swedish no finish, but think of the
- 54:08Speaker 1: great Finnish born players Yari Curry, Tiamo Salani bark Off
- 54:12Speaker 1: on that list, arguably the best two way player in
- 54:14Speaker 1: the NHL. He's not gonna turn thirty until September. I
- 54:16Speaker 1: want to give some love to him, captain his team
- 54:18Speaker 1: back to the Stanley Cup.
- 54:19Speaker 3: Jitty, are we sticking on Florida all of us?
- 54:23Speaker 5: No?
- 54:23Speaker 2: I picked to wins. So I want to get Florida
- 54:24Speaker 2: some love.
- 54:25Speaker 3: With three Yeah we we really we Yeah, we really
- 54:27Speaker 3: sucked off Edmonton there for a while. Let's give Florida
- 54:30Speaker 3: a little love. I'm gonna go with Carter Ver. Swegy
- 54:33Speaker 3: nice uh leads all players in game winning goals in
- 54:37Speaker 3: the past I mean three years. I mean he is
- 54:40Speaker 3: just mister clutch. Got the clutch gene, something that Lebron
- 54:45Speaker 3: James does not possess, but he has it in space.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Lebron James's four championships. Swegy just a sideway swipe there. Yeah.
- 54:54Speaker 5: I like this.
- 54:55Speaker 3: I like the classic drive by Barry somebody, thanks.
- 54:59Speaker 1: So much for checking l trip to Conteror, Garland was
- 55:01Speaker 1: absolutely fantastic. More great interviews coming down the pike because
- 55:04Speaker 1: JD is going to be boots in the ground, they're
- 55:06Speaker 1: still like a file Media Day, you're hostiled. Hopefully Tal
- 55:09Speaker 1: can get out there for media Day. Bob Bender still
- 55:11Speaker 1: working on up in the air. See if we get
- 55:13Speaker 1: that flight to Edmonton. But regardless of NHL Unscripted will
- 55:16Speaker 1: be all over it. Thanks so much for checking us out.
- 55:18Speaker 1: We'll talk to you soon.
- 55:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
