- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. Others said that it is Elias, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: others said that it is a prophet or one of
- 0:08Speaker 1: the prophets. Mark 6.15 Through the life of John the Baptist,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I see that the ultimate sign of a life well
- 0:19Speaker 1: lived is to say that no matter where I end up,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I can with full confidence say that I lived and
- 0:28Speaker 1: represented Christ in everything I did. In the face of persecution,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I will praise you. In the face of ridicule, I
- 0:38Speaker 1: will praise you. Even when my head is on the
- 0:42Speaker 1: chopping block and I could lose everything, I know that
- 0:47Speaker 1: in Jesus, He'll restore what the enemy has stolen from me.
- 0:52Speaker 1: My strength comes from the fact that Jesus conquered sin
- 0:55Speaker 1: and death. And because He did, Conquering the trials and
- 1:00Speaker 1: obstacles on the journey to my destiny is a given.
- 1:04Speaker 1: For greater is He who is in me than he
- 1:08Speaker 1: that is in the world. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank

- 2:08Speaker 3: John the Baptist. In our last story, Jesus healed a
- 2:13Speaker 3: man who had been lame and sick for over 38 years.
- 2:17Speaker 3: The man had been sick for so long that he
- 2:19Speaker 3: lost all hope of being healed. More so, he fell
- 2:23Speaker 3: into a cycle of bitterness and He felt helpless, alone,
- 2:28Speaker 3: and angry at the world. Yet one moment with Jesus
- 2:31Speaker 3: changed his life forever, and the Pharisees continued to hate
- 2:35Speaker 3: him for his mighty works. Now we learn about the
- 2:39Speaker 3: fate of John the Baptist. The man who prepared the
- 2:42Speaker 3: way of Jesus meets a bitter end. However, John's story
- 2:46Speaker 3: does not end without hope. It ends with a promise
- 2:50Speaker 3: inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Hello, this is Jack Graham with today's episode of The
- 2:58Speaker 4: Bible in a Year. Thank you for joining us. In
- 3:01Speaker 4: yesterday's episode, we heard how Jesus healed a man who
- 3:05Speaker 4: was crippled and helpless, even hopeless. Years of being overlooked
- 3:09Speaker 4: by society and left alone to fend for himself had
- 3:13Speaker 4: left this man stuck and bitter, plagued with a sense
- 3:16Speaker 4: of scarcity and hopelessness. But Jesus changed it all with
- 3:20Speaker 4: His words of healing and comfort. Still, The religious crowd,
- 3:25Speaker 4: led by the Pharisees, hated Jesus for challenging their tight-fisted
- 3:29Speaker 4: rule over the people's hearts. Today, we'll discover how John
- 3:34Speaker 4: the Baptist's earthly story ends. This man who heralded the
- 3:38Speaker 4: coming of the Messiah will die at the hands of
- 3:40Speaker 4: an evil, hateful king and his wife. Let's listen to
- 3:44Speaker 4: the Word of God now.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Blood sprayed across the stone walls of John's jail cell.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Herod's guards drove their fists into his stomach, then across
- 3:56Speaker 3: his head. John's grunts echoed through the prison halls as
- 3:59Speaker 3: they relentlessly beat him. He fell to the floor, unable
- 4:03Speaker 3: to prop himself up. Before he could take a breath,
- 4:06Speaker 3: a guard's foot went upward and cracked a few of
- 4:08Speaker 3: his ribs. He screamed in agony and closed his eyes.
- 4:13Speaker 3: All he could hear were the guards leaving his jail cell.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Then all went black. John had been captured by Herod,
- 4:22Speaker 3: He was taken because he called out against Herod, who
- 4:25Speaker 3: stole his brother's wife, Herodias. Out of anger, Herod captured
- 4:30Speaker 3: John to silence him. So he wrought in his cell
- 4:34Speaker 3: until Herod decided what to do with him. Even though
- 4:37Speaker 3: John was captured, Herod still feared him. He knew that
- 4:41Speaker 3: he was a righteous man, and John held the quiet
- 4:43Speaker 3: strength of a prophet. However, Herodias, Herod's stolen wife, teemed
- 4:49Speaker 3: with hatred against him. She wanted his head rolling off
- 4:52Speaker 3: his shoulders. She wanted him hung from his own entrails.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Her contempt for him ran deep. It was Herod's birthday,
- 5:00Speaker 3: and a large party was held in his honor. Drinks
- 5:03Speaker 3: flowed endlessly, and Herod grew loud and boisterous. Herodias watched
- 5:08Speaker 3: Herod laugh among his friends. She knew that he was
- 5:12Speaker 3: in prime condition to manipulate. Herodias sent out her daughter Herodias.
- 5:18Speaker 3: A beautiful young woman to dance before Herod and his guests.
- 5:21Speaker 3: She moved sensually to the erotic music. Herod locked his
- 5:25Speaker 3: gaze onto her young hips. He was mesmerized and aroused.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Dull of thinking, Herod blurted out,' Ask me anything!' His
- 5:35Speaker 3: words slurred and his cheeks blushed.' Ask me anything and
- 5:40Speaker 3: I will do it. I will give you up to
- 5:42Speaker 3: half my kingdom.' The room was hot, and the daughter
- 5:46Speaker 3: moved sensually towards Herod. Her fingers wrapped around a few
- 5:50Speaker 3: strands of his hair. She leaned her lips closely towards
- 5:53Speaker 3: Herod's ear and whispered, Give me the head of John
- 5:56Speaker 3: the Baptist. Herod's eyes widened at the request. Her words
- 6:01Speaker 3: sobered him. He looked at his friends. They were expecting
- 6:05Speaker 3: him to keep his word. Additionally, he thought there may
- 6:08Speaker 3: be a chance for him to sleep with his stepdaughter.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Out of embarrassment, drunkenness, and foolishness, Herod sent for his
- 6:15Speaker 3: men to execute John. John's cell doors opened abruptly. He
- 6:21Speaker 3: saw the silhouette of two guards holding chains and an axe.
- 6:24Speaker 3: John sighed deeply. He knew it was time. He stood
- 6:28Speaker 3: to his feet and walked towards them. They bound him
- 6:31Speaker 3: and drug him out to the back of the palace.
- 6:34Speaker 3: John thought about his life and purpose. He had proclaimed
- 6:38Speaker 3: and prepared the way of Jesus. Thousands had followed him
- 6:41Speaker 3: and then left him to follow the Messiah. As John
- 6:45Speaker 3: was shoved to his knees, he remembered the words he
- 6:47Speaker 3: once spoke on the Jordan River. He must increase and
- 6:51Speaker 3: I must decrease. The words held much more weight now.
- 6:56Speaker 3: As John's head was shoved under the cold stone table,
- 6:59Speaker 3: he thought about the Christ. His joy was complete and
- 7:02Speaker 3: his purpose was fulfilled. Death would be a welcomed friend.
- 7:07Speaker 3: For the one who came after him would prove death
- 7:09Speaker 3: to be powerless. He would strip away its sting and
- 7:12Speaker 3: life everlasting would follow. John smiled, closed his eyes, and
- 7:17Speaker 3: allowed the axe to fall on his neck. John's head
- 7:20Speaker 3: was handed to Herodia on a silver platter. Her pupils
- 7:24Speaker 3: widened at the sight of it. However, the momentary pleasure
- 7:27Speaker 3: was replaced with sickness. She thought John the Baptist was
- 7:31Speaker 3: the source of her embarrassment and shame. However, looking at
- 7:34Speaker 3: his lifeless head laying on a platter offered her no solace.
- 7:39Speaker 3: She still felt empty. Her revenge fell flat. as all
- 7:44Speaker 3: revenge does. Her soul would not be satisfied, and her
- 7:48Speaker 3: sins would eventually find her out. The next day, John's
- 7:51Speaker 3: friends gathered his body and laid it in a tomb.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Months had passed, and Jesus' name had become so well
- 7:58Speaker 3: known that even Herod's servants were talking about him. He
- 8:01Speaker 3: heard of his miracles and words of power. Herod's heart raced,
- 8:05Speaker 3: for he had a feeling that Jesus was John himself
- 8:08Speaker 3: risen from the dead. He was wrong, of course. John
- 8:12Speaker 3: was buried into dirt and would not raise again. However,
- 8:15Speaker 3: Jesus would one day die, and unlike John, he would
- 8:19Speaker 3: rise again. He would rise above the sting of death.
- 8:23Speaker 3: He would rise above the power of sin and darkness.
- 8:27Speaker 3: He would rise where all men fell, and those who
- 8:30Speaker 3: believed in him would rise with him.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Today's reading begins in a prison cell. John the Baptist,
- 8:40Speaker 4: the prophet who foretold the coming Messiah, had angered the
- 8:44Speaker 4: Jewish ruler, King Herod. This was the son of the
- 8:47Speaker 4: maniacal Herod the Great who tried to have an infant
- 8:50Speaker 4: Jesus killed. And like his father, this Herod was not
- 8:54Speaker 4: opposed to spilling the blood of those who challenged him
- 8:57Speaker 4: or spoke out against him. And that's precisely what John
- 9:01Speaker 4: the Baptist had done. He'd called out Herod for stealing
- 9:04Speaker 4: his own brother's wife, a wicked woman named Herodias.
- 9:08Speaker 1: The rule of.
- 9:09Speaker 4: These two and their persecution of John is reminiscent of
- 9:13Speaker 4: some of Israel's evil kings and queens, like Ahab and Jezebel.
- 9:18Speaker 4: They had no regard for men of God, so as
- 9:21Speaker 4: John sat in a cell, they were still not satisfied.
- 9:25Speaker 4: He needed to be disposed of, canceled. But Herod was
- 9:30Speaker 4: also fearful of the people who loved John, so he
- 9:33Speaker 4: was reluctant to have him killed. His wife Herodias, however,
- 9:37Speaker 4: had no interest in such caution. So she hatched a plan,
- 9:41Speaker 4: an evil plot, to ensure that John would be put
- 9:44Speaker 4: to death. She sent her daughter, Salome, to dance for
- 9:48Speaker 4: Herod and his court on his birthday. Herod, surely intoxicated
- 9:52Speaker 4: from his partying, was pleased with Salome's dance and vowed
- 9:56Speaker 4: to give her whatever she asked. This is all a
- 10:00Speaker 4: dangerous promise to make, and Herod would soon regret his offer.
- 10:05Speaker 4: For at her mother's direction, she made her request. She
- 10:09Speaker 4: wanted the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And so John, after having served God's purpose for him
- 10:17Speaker 4: on earth, went quietly into death that day. His head
- 10:21Speaker 4: was cut off without any ceremony or dignity for this
- 10:24Speaker 4: man of God. But there is no doubt that when
- 10:27Speaker 4: he entered eternity, he was in the presence of God immediately,
- 10:32Speaker 4: rejoicing in heaven, and heard the words, Well done, good
- 10:35Speaker 4: and faithful servant. He had announced and made a way
- 10:39Speaker 4: for the coming of the Lord the Messiah, Jesus, who
- 10:42Speaker 4: was going to take away the sins of the world.
- 10:44Speaker 4: In Matthew 14, verses 13 to 14, Here's what we read.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in
- 10:53Speaker 4: a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when
- 10:56Speaker 4: the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from
- 10:59Speaker 4: the towns. And when he went ashore, he saw a
- 11:01Speaker 4: great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed
- 11:05Speaker 4: their sick. Jesus mourned the death of his forerunner and
- 11:10Speaker 4: friend and family member, John the Baptist. This man had
- 11:15Speaker 4: meant so much to the Lord Jesus. And though he
- 11:18Speaker 4: isolated himself in grief for a while, he soon saw
- 11:22Speaker 4: the need of the people who followed him. Christ had
- 11:25Speaker 4: compassion and mercy upon each one. It's another sign of
- 11:29Speaker 4: God's unending grace and mercy and his willingness to hear
- 11:33Speaker 4: and answer the cries of his people. You see, Jesus
- 11:36Speaker 4: is God, and in his deity he can heal. He
- 11:39Speaker 4: is also man. In his humanity, he had compassion for people.
- 11:45Speaker 4: So as God and man, he loved each one. Jesus
- 11:49Speaker 4: knew that soon he also would die. He would be killed, crucified,
- 11:54Speaker 4: and Herod himself would also have a hand in it.
- 11:57Speaker 4: But unlike John, whose body remained in the ground, Jesus
- 12:01Speaker 4: would rise victorious, conquering sin and death as the Savior,
- 12:05Speaker 4: the Redeemer of all who would call upon his name.
- 12:09Speaker 4: John's life was well lived because he fulfilled his purpose.
- 12:13Speaker 4: He served with courage and boldness and faithfulness all the
- 12:16Speaker 4: way to heaven. Oh, that the same might be said
- 12:20Speaker 4: of each of us as we live and die and
- 12:23Speaker 4: then experience the eternal reward of our Savior and our God.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Dear Lord, we thank you for the tremendous example of
- 12:32Speaker 4: John the Baptist and how his bold, courageous, faithful life
- 12:37Speaker 4: shows us how to live and how to die. May
- 12:41Speaker 4: we live in your grace. And may we die in
- 12:44Speaker 4: your peace. And all along, may we fulfill your purpose
- 12:47Speaker 4: for our lives. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for
