Transcript
- 0:00Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly, the podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:06business and stock market tea. Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives
- 0:10and Annie shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it. Help me own pool.
- 0:15I went to the 1975 last night. Did you? We were recording this last night.
- 0:18No idea who they are. I know I was getting so much shit for it as well. If I was like,
- 0:22oh cool, the 19th year. The guy in Maddie Healy who is the head singer
- 0:27I was on stage with a bottle of wine and just like smoking on stage and drinking and stumbling
- 0:32a lot. I was like, is this part of the act or is he being serious? He liked just out of it or like
- 0:37yeah, he was like, I was like rolling back his head and stuff. I think it's part of the act
- 0:41but I was just like, this is quite embarrassing. Yeah, you're like, oh so this used to be the smoke-free
- 0:47Oh yeah, it's fine as well. It's like a fire has it. Yeah, I was like, what happens if he drops the
- 0:52smoke? Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me, it's actually smoke-free in here. I'd be like, out.
- 0:57I know everyone else is under 12 but I'm a bit worried about the smoke hazard.
- 1:02But that was fun. Yeah, it was real fun. At one point he was like, shout out to everyone
- 1:05over 30 and I was like, woo! In no one else. You're like, you're like, you're around a shit.
- 1:10Shit. Oh god. But I woke up this morning and realised that we've had to give the out of
- 1:16the e-tron the curve car back and I had to walk to VIX house for this podcast. And me
- 1:20are patiently waiting by the door to film so rolling up in the Honda Jazz. It was too embarrassed.
- 1:27So good. I literally walked here because I thought, fuck, I can't actually bring myself to drive
- 1:31this car yet. And I was running late and I started running and then I fell. I drove my foot.
- 1:35It's been a morning. It's been a morning. It's been a morning. Flat on my face just on the side of
- 1:39the road and I thought, far out. So I've been almost driving through a grey lane about 1130
- 1:44on a Saturday morning. So you would have seen me. So I actually at one point was lie down and I
- 1:50thought, I can't bother getting up. I was going to lie here. It's a real fun place.
- 1:56Hey, well I'm in a good mood. Are you? Why? Because I've got a spray tan. I know you're looking
- 2:00so glowy. But I'm in a good mood. Not only because I've got a spray tan, but because the inflation
- 2:07rate in New Zealand dropped from 7.2 to 6.7. It's like half a percent which doesn't seem big but
- 2:14in inflation change terms, it's really good. How did that happen? And why did it happen?
- 2:20Because it means the cost of things are getting less expensive which is really good. I don't think
- 2:24I can confirm that's true. I know, but you wouldn't be able to notice half a percent. I don't think.
- 2:30But it just means it's a good sign. Because my flatmate was reading some email about some
- 2:36OCR or like it's still 6.7%. That's still high, but it's lower than the highest.
- 2:44Because they were expecting it to be higher. If something about economists thinking it was going
- 2:47to be higher than that. Whereas the UK was the opposite. That was higher than I expected. So
- 2:53at least we're in the right direction. And hopefully it will continue to get better and better.
- 2:57And maybe in 10 years time we'll be back to 2%. I'm joking. Oh my god. I was like, I can't afford
- 3:03another 10 years of this. I don't know. I don't think anyone can. Someone sent me the
- 3:07actually it was on Instagram. Did you see that? It was like, I'm actually going to read it.
- 3:11Oh, the cosy lips. You know, hold on. Oh, sorry. Okay, I'm just going to find it because it was
- 3:17quiet. Someone sent it in. And they were like, sorry, people appreciate this page. In the meme was,
- 3:26I can't go that low. Sorry babe. Especially with the cosy lips and all that chairs.
- 3:34And then the other person goes cosy lips. She goes slam for cosy lips. The cosy lips, the cosy lips
- 3:41crisis. I totally feel that. Yeah. God. The fact that it's become slaying is bad. You know the fact
- 3:47that everyone's feeling it. It's been around for such a long time that it's become cosy lips.
- 3:52It's on abbreviation. That's depressing. Let's hope we don't have much of the cosy lips much
- 3:59longer. Yeah. Well, I mean, if it's going down half a percent, when was this comparing to like last
- 4:05year? So this time last year? Oh, God. Only half a percent in a year. Sorry, this time last month.
- 4:10Oh, yeah. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry. Jesus. Yeah. Oh, that's quite good. Yeah.
- 4:14So if it continued to go down half a percent for the next six months or something,
- 4:18yeah, then we could be back at, you know, two to three percent. Which means interest rates will
- 4:22come down, which means more goods, repayments will come down, all that chairs, which is really,
- 4:26really good. I'd really love to do any episode maybe on our on raising the curve, like the long
- 4:31episodes on the property market and understanding that because in all honesty, I'm like, is it a good
- 4:35time to buy? Not that I have enough to buy, but I would love to understand the difference and
- 4:40interest rates and how they work and what that means for homeowners blah, blah, blah. We'll save that
- 4:44for another episode. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. But in this episode, I'm going to talk about good old
- 4:49Taylor Swift. Oh, yeah. Fuck, she's, she's awesome. I love her. I know. She's so cool. We have such bad
- 4:56taste in music, both of us. We have like really lame taste. Oh, you saw my running playlist,
- 5:01honestly. I had friends over the other night with the other weekend. And they're like, let's put
- 5:06on your Spotify. I was like, no, no, no, no, yes. I'm like, I'll just search your song. I'm like,
- 5:10no, no, no. Let's look up this person. You're like, oh, no, no, no, no, no, I'll do it.
- 5:18Just type in quick enough. So no search history comes up. Mine's like, yeah, pretty embarrassing.
- 5:22But that's sort of the whole 1975. Yeah. It's a lot of music. So I messaged a few cool friends to
- 5:27be like, what are you doing on Friday night? Do you like the 1975? And I'm going to
- 5:33Oh, Jay.
- 5:34No, he's cooking of pop stars.
- 5:36So Taylor Swift.
- 5:37So she came out last week that she turned down a deal
- 5:42by FTX.
- 5:43Do you remember that crypto currency platform
- 5:45that went bust and they owed millions of,
- 5:48sorry, billions of dollars.
- 5:50And then that guy's now going to jail.
- 5:52She turned down kind of endorsement
- 5:55to be a brand ambassador by them
- 5:57because she was like, what, this is an unregulated security.
- 6:00Just meaning that there's no regulation around it.
- 6:02And she was like, she was kind of sitting there going,
- 6:04I think this is dodgy.
- 6:05And yes, you're paying me a lot of money.
- 6:07They were going to pay her $100 billion.
- 6:10Billion.
- 6:10Billion.
- 6:12I know.
- 6:13I mean, it might have been in crypto,
- 6:15in crypto, but they were going to pay her that
- 6:18to endorse FTX, which is outrageous.
- 6:21She asked the question, is this unregistered?
- 6:25What are the risks?
- 6:26So this is back in the day.
- 6:27We're not back in the day.
- 6:28Recently, when Kim Kardashian
- 6:31had a bunch of Tom Brady Naomi Osaka,
- 6:34that tennis player, Stephen Curry, the NBA player,
- 6:37a lot of them endorse it now.
- 6:38They're being, they've got lawsuits against them.
- 6:41And so it's just,
- 6:42Oh, tell us what.
- 6:43Yeah, it's just like for her for such a young female
- 6:47to be asking those questions.
- 6:48And all these kind of older, more sophisticated,
- 6:51famous people, actors, you know,
- 6:54two have just jumped on the bandwagon
- 6:55because they would have seen a 100 billion.
- 6:56And we're like, oh, yes, yes.
- 6:58So it's just a really good reminder that,
- 7:00you know, always make sure that you are listening
- 7:04or being educated by a reputable source like us.
- 7:07Yes, and also asking,
- 7:08knowing to ask questions,
- 7:10and that it's okay to ask questions
- 7:11if you don't understand something,
- 7:13because I think that's where a lot of people run into trouble
- 7:16is that they think they're going to sound stupid
- 7:17by asking a question.
- 7:18100%, but actually, it's totally fine
- 7:21if you don't understand something
- 7:22and you're way better to be fully informed
- 7:24even if you have to ask 100,000 questions.
- 7:26Because you're not supposed to be an expert at everything.
- 7:28And I think that's what I realized too late.
- 7:30You know, when I was in the finance industry
- 7:31and I was with a lot of very experienced people
- 7:35and I was scared to ask questions
- 7:36and then on reflection, I'm like,
- 7:38I'm not supposed to be new to the industry
- 7:40or new to my job and know everything.
- 7:42Like nobody does.
- 7:44And also, this is people that aren't,
- 7:45it's not even their job.
- 7:46Yeah.
- 7:47And that stuff doesn't work in finance.
- 7:49Totally the deal, probably.
- 7:50You're just investing your own money.
- 7:52So you have every right to ask questions.
- 7:53Yeah. So a go-tease whistle.
- 7:56And it's kind of also a reminder
- 7:57if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- 7:59A hundred billion dollars is to be a paid ambassador
- 8:02that, to me, sounds way too good to be true.
- 8:04It's like, okay, what are the risks?
- 8:06Totally.
- 8:07I'm dodgy.
- 8:08Also, a hundred billion would sit you up for a bit.
- 8:09Like, you could do that and be sent to jail
- 8:11for a couple of years and then have to...
- 8:13She made about 1.5 billion from her to her.
- 8:16So like, a hundred billions.
- 8:18It's just like outrageous.
- 8:20Really, she made 1.5 billion from the tour
- 8:22and it would have been 100 times that.
- 8:24Yeah, and she still turned it down.
- 8:25I know.
- 8:26I don't even understand how they would have
- 8:27that much money to pay.
- 8:28That's why I think it must have been in crypto or something.
- 8:30Right.
- 8:31But my dad always said that.
- 8:32He's like, if it sounds too good to be true,
- 8:34it probably is.
- 8:35You know, if you're buying a car and it's like super cheap.
- 8:37To control it out of you.
- 8:39Oh my God, I'm dead, it's a bargain.
- 8:41He's like, if it sounds too good to be true,
- 8:42it probably is.
- 8:43I was like, yeah, so it's a good reminder.
- 8:46Staying on the famous people topic,
- 8:48we had Ryan Reynolds, who is also pretty astute
- 8:52in the investment world.
- 8:53Oh, I read about this in the Curve Weekly email.
- 8:55I'm really keen to have one of those.
- 8:57So recently he sold a steak.
- 8:59So he had a sheer holding in a mobile business
- 9:02called Mini Mobile.
- 9:03And it got bought out by a bigger mobile company
- 9:06called Team Mobile.
- 9:07And he had a steak in that.
- 9:10So he owned shares in that.
- 9:11And when a company gets bought out by another company,
- 9:13you sell your shares to that company
- 9:15and it becomes, becomes owned by that bigger company.
- 9:18And so it would be like if a company bought the curve,
- 9:21we owned shares in the curve,
- 9:22we would sell those shares to the curve.
- 9:24And sorry, we would sell those shares to the bigger company.
- 9:27And then we don't own anything to do with the curve.
- 9:29It's owned by the bigger company.
- 9:30And so he had shares in this business
- 9:32and he made $300 million
- 9:35because of his sheer holding in this mobile business.
- 9:38And then more recently, he's also bought into
- 9:40another small finish payments company.
- 9:43I'm going to butcher the name.
- 9:44Finish?
- 9:45Oh, like Finland.
- 9:46Finland, yeah, not finished.
- 9:48Yeah, it was a long one.
- 9:51It's called Nuve, but I probably butcher that
- 9:54pronunciation so apologies.
- 9:55But yeah, so he's kind of doing a rinse and repeat,
- 9:59in most sense, you know, in terms of investing,
- 10:01this company will probably do well.
- 10:03He becomes like the face of it
- 10:05or has a lot of involvement in the campaigns, the marketing.
- 10:10I think that's a really key element to it.
- 10:12Because he basically puts his face to a brand.
- 10:17And it's a business profile.
- 10:18He puts its revenue, sales, profitability,
- 10:20and then he benefits as a shareholder.
- 10:22Rather than just like he's some being paid to market
- 10:27a product or something, he's got skin in the game
- 10:29or whatever it's called.
- 10:30He actually owns a quite a decent portion of that business.
- 10:34And his vested interest for that,
- 10:36to be promoted wealth, him to promoted,
- 10:38and then to be able to make money.
- 10:39And he's got a recognizable face.
- 10:42So it kind of makes sense for him to use that
- 10:45to help further improve the share price
- 10:47and the value of the business.
- 10:50I wonder if he does his due diligence?
- 10:53Do, do, do, oh my god.
- 10:55D-day.
- 10:56D-day.
- 10:57I wonder if he does his D-day on the business before.
- 11:00Definitely.
- 11:01He would.
- 11:02Yeah, if you're investing a lot of money,
- 11:03you're doing, well, you've got teams of people
- 11:05that would do that for you.
- 11:06And you know it's a good investment.
- 11:07Yeah, yeah.
- 11:08But we had someone send in to the curve,
- 11:12a screenshot of Ryan Reynolds linked in page.
- 11:15Because I was saying, I was like, well, acting must be his
- 11:18side hustle.
- 11:18He makes so much money from investing, you know, acting,
- 11:21which you think is his main gig probably isn't.
- 11:24And she sent a screenshot of his LinkedIn.
- 11:27And it was like part-time actor, full-time business owner.
- 11:30Oh, really?
- 11:31I was like, oh my god, it's true.
- 11:33And he's like, yeah.
- 11:34And he's like, the people are saying to send us all this stuff.
- 11:37I'm like, we don't have to do any content creation.
- 11:39I mean, any research is great.
- 11:42But in other news, we also had Netflix release.
- 11:47So they're usually always one of the first companies
- 11:50to report their financial results.
- 11:52And we're now in reporting season again.
- 11:53So this comes around pretty much every three months.
- 11:56And yeah, it was pretty subdued start to,
- 12:00really?
- 12:01They didn't fit who else.
- 12:02Yeah, because I actually checked my shoes.
- 12:03He's account recently, because I've invested a little bit
- 12:05in Netflix.
- 12:06And I was showing my step-mom, actually,
- 12:07what I'd invested in.
- 12:09And I was like, oh shit, Netflix is down quite a bit.
- 12:11Yeah.
- 12:12I mean, it was down only 3% last week, but it's up 50%
- 12:14over the last 12 months.
- 12:15But it still hasn't reached.
- 12:17So it reached nearly $700 per year in November 21.
- 12:21And it's fallen to about 320.
- 12:25That's huge.
- 12:26So it's still well off where it previously was previous highs.
- 12:30So even though it's up 50%, it's still well below.
- 12:33So it's kind of a case of if you think that Netflix
- 12:35is still going to grow and still going to be around.
- 12:38I do.
- 12:39Yeah, I mean, I'm still watching Netflix.
- 12:40They're still bringing out great programs.
- 12:43But yeah, they're cracking down on this password sharing.
- 12:46Sophie, I don't see your Netflix.
- 12:49I see your neon.
- 12:50I'm like, do you?
- 12:52No, I don't.
- 12:53Is it the same one?
- 12:54No, good to know.
- 12:54Yeah, yeah.
- 12:55Nope.
- 12:58Which will hopefully boost revenue in the late half of the year.
- 13:02Because how many people are using passwords?
- 13:04100 million people are sharing passwords.
- 13:07So even if you crack down on 50 million or half of those,
- 13:10I can imagine that much more revenue.
- 13:12But yeah, it's hard to crack down on.
- 13:15That's why it's taking so long.
- 13:17And then we also had Tesla as well.
- 13:18Last week, which also didn't do too well.
- 13:22Their share price fell 11% last week.
- 13:24But again, it's up 50% this year.
- 13:26Why wouldn't do you know why it fell?
- 13:28So they're actually cutting the prices of their vehicles,
- 13:31which is never really a good sign.
- 13:32I think we spoke about this a while back.
- 13:34Because if he runs demanding your product,
- 13:36you can keep prices high.
- 13:38If there's fewer people demanding your product with anything,
- 13:41then you're going to have to cut prices to stimulate.
- 13:43Is it because there's other competitors?
- 13:45Yeah.
- 13:46And it's a case of that also hits their profit.
- 13:49And because you're not generating as much money
- 13:51from each car.
- 13:53But the company is still pretty positive.
- 13:54Elon Musk's still pretty positive.
- 13:56They're still generating about 2 million cars a year,
- 13:59which is quite nuts.
- 14:01But it is the second time they've cut prices this month.
- 14:05So investors and shareholders are like,
- 14:08that's not a very good sign.
- 14:10But again, it's all about taking a long-term view.
- 14:12If you think that there is still going to be more
- 14:16Teslas on the road in five, 10 years' time,
- 14:19or if you think that Teslas is really innovative company
- 14:21in terms of what they do with batteries and even vehicles,
- 14:25there's lots of technology in there and IP
- 14:27that they could use for other things,
- 14:29then that's when you'd be thinking down, right?
- 14:31Yeah, a lot of people, a few friends,
- 14:34a mess of you being like, have you seen Teslas?
- 14:36Oh my god, what should I do?
- 14:37I was like, zoom out.
- 14:39Like, yes, it's down, I'm like, hey, hey,
- 14:41none of that energy.
- 14:41Sorry.
- 14:42Sorry.
- 14:43No, I was like, I was like, zoom out.
- 14:46It's down, yes, it's down 11% this week,
- 14:48but it's up 50% this year.
- 14:50And yes, headlines need to sell newspapers and magazines.
- 14:54And so they're going to be like, Tesla,
- 14:56Mr's expectations, earnings and cutting prices and all that.
- 15:01But it's a long-term game.
- 15:03And that's why it's very easy to get caught up
- 15:05in the short-term headlines, but...
- 15:08Cool.
- 15:09Have confidence.
- 15:10I mean, I've got Tesla.
- 15:11I don't know if I'm going to invest more in the moment.
- 15:13Well, I have no money in the restaurant now anyway.
- 15:15You should see Sophie's wallet.
- 15:16Oh, it's fine.
- 15:18There's that you think, where is that?
- 15:19She's gone around running around last night with cash.
- 15:22She's like, he has $20 for my cocktail.
- 15:24And I was like, I was like, girl, you feel,
- 15:26you look like a drug dealer.
- 15:27And I was like, handing out cash to your friend,
- 15:28and he's in a plastic snap-fock bag as well.
- 15:31I was calling it my baggy.
- 15:32Yeah, everyone was like, it's really not.
- 15:35I'm going to shake it off.
- 15:37It's like, I bet you my friend at the concert
- 15:39was like, can you pass me my baggy?
- 15:40She was like, oh my god.
- 15:41She was like, please don't call it that.
- 15:42We're going to go find the baggy.
- 15:44Oh, yeah, go find it once again.
- 15:46Do-do-do-do-do.
- 15:55Here it is, the baggy.
- 15:56So the funniest part about this
- 15:57is in a really nice handbag.
- 16:00And then inside the handbag is my baggy.
- 16:03And you're like rummaging around.
- 16:05It's so good.
- 16:06Oh my god.
- 16:07Oh, it's got my tablets in it.
- 16:09I've got fake coins in it.
- 16:10It was real.
- 16:11She's also got fake coins, honestly.
- 16:13This girl continues to surprise me.
- 16:16Do you know the funniest part about this?
- 16:18Yeah, not in fact, just lucky as to see us doing.
- 16:21But it's quite organized, I thought.
- 16:23Given I thought.
- 16:24Mm-hmm.
- 16:26Thoughts, you're in.
- 16:27Thoughts, thought.
- 16:28Well, I don't have a wallet at the moment.
- 16:30And I thought it's better to put it in something.
- 16:32Yeah.
- 16:33And actually, to be honest, this money was my Christmas money
- 16:36from my dad.
- 16:36I found it in my underwear drawer.
- 16:38I thought.
- 16:39Yes, there's $150.
- 16:41So now I'm just making my way through the cash money.
- 16:45Cash money.
- 16:47Is there anything else?
- 16:48Or do we want to talk about my plastic wallet for a while?
- 16:50We're just going to, um, I want to finish with some 1975.
- 16:55Oh my god, I love that.
- 16:56But it won't be worth it.
- 16:59Can you do it?
- 16:59I love it.
- 17:03Oh my god.
- 17:04It's a great song.
