- 0:00We didn't own a baby monitor. So when I heard
- 0:03a woman whispering through one in our kitchen,
- 0:06I thought my wife had bought it. The little white
- 0:10receiver sat beside the kettle. A green light
- 0:13blinked above its speaker. She's finally asleep.
- 0:18The woman whispered. I looked upstairs. My wife,
- 0:24Anna, was working in the spare room. We had no
- 0:28children. Did you leave something in the kitchen?
- 0:34I called. She came down, saw the monitor. and
- 0:39stopped on the last step. Where did that come
- 0:42from? Before I could answer, the speaker crackled.
- 0:49A man's voice said, keep your voice down. They'll
- 0:53hear you. Anna plugged it. The green light stayed
- 0:59on. Batteries. The compartment underneath was
- 1:05empty. We carried it outside and left it in the
- 1:09garage. At dinner, needless mentioned. Then Anna's
- 1:16phone lit up. A notification up our doral camera.
- 1:22Someone was standing on the porch, on the screen.
- 1:26A woman held a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
- 1:29Her face was turned away. I opened the front
- 1:33door. Nobody. But our kitchen smelled of warm
- 1:40milk. The monitor was beside the kettle again.
- 1:46Its green light blinked. Hannah gripped my arm.
- 1:53From the speaker came three slow footsteps, and
- 1:57the woman's voice put the kitchen downstairs.
- 2:04I stared at the ceiling. The footsteps moved
- 2:07directly above us. In the spare room. I took
- 2:12a flashlight from the drawer. Anna stayed by
- 2:16the front door while I climbed the stairs. The
- 2:20spare room was empty. Laptop -open chair pushed
- 2:26back. But beneath the desk, something pressed
- 2:30forth deep circles through the carpet, as though
- 2:34a heavy cut had stood there for years. Downstairs,
- 2:39Anna said my name. Quietly, I hurried back. She
- 2:47was looking at the monitor. A man's voice came
- 2:52through it. There's someone on the stairs. Then
- 2:58we heard my footsteps. The exact hurried steps
- 3:02I had just taken, Hannah whispered. From the
- 3:13speaker. Her voice repeated. We left. At a hotel.
- 3:25I called the landlord. He asked whether the monitor
- 3:29was white. Then he asked if we'd heard a baby
- 3:34cry. He arrived at the hotel carrying an old
- 3:44folder. Inside were photographs of our house.
- 3:51One. The downstairs kitchen was a sitting room.
- 3:58The spare room contained a wooden cot. A yellow
- 4:02blanket hung over its side. My parents lived
- 4:07there. He said for the renovation. Who was the
- 4:13baby? My sister. What happened to her? Nothing,
- 4:23she's 46. She lives in Leeds. I looked at Anna.
- 4:29The landlord rubbed his hands together. When
- 4:33she was little. My mother thinks through the
- 4:36monitor people talking in rooms. But it was dad.
- 4:41Us. Dad thought it was interference. Till a voice
- 4:51described the wallpaper he was about to hang.
- 4:56Did they hear anything else? His eyes dropped
- 5:00to the folder. A smoke alarm. Outside our hotel
- 5:06room. Someone pushed a cart along the corridor.
- 5:12We waited until it passed. My mother heard a
- 5:17man telling a woman to get downstairs. Then,
- 5:22glass breaking, she took my sister outside and
- 5:27called the fire brigade. Was there a fire? They
- 5:34found faulty wiring behind the nursery wall,
- 5:36said Mr. Gwon, and I set forth. So they prevented
- 5:42it? I thought so. He handed me the last photograph.
- 5:50His parents stood outside the house with their
- 5:52daughter. Behind them, an upstairs window was
- 5:58black with smoke, and Lord stared. That wasn't
- 6:05there before. I heard the same quiet static.
- 6:25The smoke alarm began. We're staying here. The
- 6:37landlord called an electrician and gave him permission
- 6:39to enter the house. We waited together. The electrician
- 6:47phoned. It found heat damage inside the spare
- 6:51room wall. But at 3 .06 a .m., a wall threw green
- 7:08light blinking beside the hotel gate.
