- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome back to Cardinal Who.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What are you doing here?
- 0:15Speaker 1: You're taking them a couple of weeks off? Ah jeez,
- 0:20Speaker 1: one week, one week, unbel one All Star Break. Okay, well,
- 0:24Speaker 1: welcome back to Cardinal Territory. Apparently Gym's back today, So
- 0:28Speaker 1: Jim is gonna do the hosting and Lance and I
- 0:29Speaker 1: are just gonna do the talking.
- 0:32Speaker 2: But Jim, welcome back. How was your All Star Break?
- 0:35Speaker 3: It was great, Jersey Shore. Uh, it was fun. And
- 0:39Speaker 3: you guys did a bang up job when I was away, Honestly, Uh,
- 0:43Speaker 3: George said, everything ran smoothly.
- 0:45Speaker 4: You guys were great.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Although and I didn't watch the episodes, but I was
- 0:50Speaker 3: at my kid's game yesterday and people came up to
- 0:53Speaker 3: me and said, oh boy, Kylon Lance. They went after
- 0:57Speaker 3: you were gone, they went after I was like, all right,
- 1:01Speaker 3: we'll straight into that one. All right, We're good, We're
- 1:04Speaker 3: back together. I will tip the cap to you guys
- 1:07Speaker 3: because the shows were great. And I want it on
- 1:10Speaker 3: the record that even though I'm on the boardwalk in
- 1:12Speaker 3: Wildwood on the Beach, I'm still tweeting the show's content
- 1:18Speaker 3: out to make sure people know that we have an
- 1:21Speaker 3: episode coming out so I want I want credit for that.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Now let's talk some Cardino baseball. They open up a
- 1:29Speaker 3: series in Anaheim and they are coming off a bad loss,
- 1:34Speaker 3: I mean terrible. They're up seven to nothing after five.
- 1:38Speaker 3: The bullpen wasn't good. This is where Lance can use
- 1:42Speaker 3: a cussword. The defense was terrible, and even the base
- 1:47Speaker 3: running was awful. Hopefully they can bounce back. But let
- 1:52Speaker 3: me ask you, guys, because you guys are veterans of
- 1:54Speaker 3: Betty Major League Baseball.
- 1:57Speaker 4: Season's Kyle.
- 1:57Speaker 3: When you have a bad, bad, bad law So I
- 2:00Speaker 3: understand there's always another game coming, unless you're at the
- 2:03Speaker 3: end of the season. But do the really bad ones?
- 2:06Speaker 3: Do you blow them right off and flush them, as
- 2:09Speaker 3: the players say, or do they linger a while? Honestly,
- 2:11Speaker 3: what's the story?
- 2:13Speaker 1: Well, I think the whole story has to go into
- 2:17Speaker 1: what the season looks like, all right. You know, if
- 2:20Speaker 1: you're a bad team, a bad loss just kind of
- 2:24Speaker 1: you know, they happen a little bit more frequently, so
- 2:26Speaker 1: it is what it is. You try to brush it off,
- 2:28Speaker 1: You try to move on to the next one as
- 2:30Speaker 1: best you can, and you use them as a learning opportunity.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Probably you have a lot of young players use that
- 2:36Speaker 1: as a learning opportunity. See if you can, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: help walk them through a few of the situations. You
- 2:41Speaker 1: know why it happened, how you can avoid it. As
- 2:43Speaker 1: a good team, like a really good team, they don't
- 2:46Speaker 1: normally face you too much. You're probably square in the
- 2:49Speaker 1: middle of a playoff race, or probably ahead of the
- 2:52Speaker 1: team behind you by a good chunk, and you're really
- 2:56Speaker 1: not worried about it. The teams in the middle here
- 2:59Speaker 1: where the Cardinals are. I think this could be a
- 3:02Speaker 1: little bit of a tipping point for this team going
- 3:05Speaker 1: one way or the other. It might be it wasn't
- 3:08Speaker 1: their biggest loss, right a one run loss, but in
- 3:11Speaker 1: terms of how it happened, maybe their worst loss of
- 3:13Speaker 1: the year. The timing of it on the road, chance
- 3:17Speaker 1: to win a series against the team right behind you
- 3:19Speaker 1: in the wildcard race, a chance to push ahead and
- 3:22Speaker 1: really kind of solidify yourself as hey, we need to
- 3:24Speaker 1: buy some players.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And if they do not win.
- 3:30Speaker 1: The series in LA, it's gonna appear to be the
- 3:33Speaker 1: loss that kind of started a little bit of a slide.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And they weren't able to recover.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So they got great leaders in this locker room, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: I do not think it's going to carry over.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But it takes a.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Little bit of emotional and mental strength here to kind
- 3:50Speaker 1: of navigate through yesterday and move on to today. I'm
- 3:53Speaker 1: sure always doing a great job of it. And these
- 3:55Speaker 1: guys are gonna be ready.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Ali was not happy after the game Lands, but I mean,
- 4:01Speaker 3: it was just terrible across the board. Ali basically said
- 4:05Speaker 3: we had no business winning a game like that, which
- 4:10Speaker 3: they didn't. Was it? Was it just a game? Or
- 4:14Speaker 3: are the wheels coming off the wagon?
- 4:16Speaker 4: Right here right now? Is just a game?
- 4:19Speaker 5: Right when it's so bad like that, when like everything
- 4:22Speaker 5: bad happens, it's kind of like, okay, it could be
- 4:25Speaker 5: like a eye opening awakening for the second half, being like, hey,
- 4:30Speaker 5: we can't be shitty in every aspect and expect to
- 4:33Speaker 5: be in this thing when it comes time. So hey,
- 4:35Speaker 5: this is a wake up call, so you know, it
- 4:38Speaker 5: doesn't start rolling downhill and then we're in a really
- 4:40Speaker 5: bad spot. So hopefully that's the way they use it,
- 4:44Speaker 5: and I think Ali will use it that way. It's like, ky, boys,
- 4:46Speaker 5: we've played good enough baseball to be embarrassed of what
- 4:49Speaker 5: happened in this situation. We're too good or too talented
- 4:53Speaker 5: for this to happen in every aspect of the game,
- 4:57Speaker 5: and to lose a game like that for it to happen.
- 4:59Speaker 5: So hopefully they can regroup this series and get a
- 5:03Speaker 5: series win. Hopefully it doesn't turn into something where it's like, Okay,
- 5:06Speaker 5: we start, you know, harping on all the negatives and
- 5:09Speaker 5: then next thing, you know, we start playing tight and
- 5:12Speaker 5: then we start making more mistakes. So hopefully it's a
- 5:15Speaker 5: learning experience. It's one of those eye opening experiences to
- 5:18Speaker 5: where it says, hey, when we if we play bad,
- 5:21Speaker 5: we will we will look terrible, and that's what you're
- 5:24Speaker 5: gonna see happen. And we don't want to be like that.
- 5:26Speaker 5: We haven't been like that, and we don't want to
- 5:29Speaker 5: be like that. So this series will tell us. I
- 5:32Speaker 5: think the next couple series will tell us. It's like, hey,
- 5:35Speaker 5: if it starts happening multiple games a series and stuff
- 5:37Speaker 5: like that, then it's like, Okay, then.
- 5:39Speaker 4: We've got a lot to be worried about.
- 5:41Speaker 5: But right now, it's Hey, we came back from a break,
- 5:44Speaker 5: played a couple of close games, first two games of
- 5:46Speaker 5: this series, and then we like we just kind of
- 5:49Speaker 5: we ship down our leg in a game that we
- 5:51Speaker 5: had a lead, and that's just ugly baseball and that's
- 5:54Speaker 5: not who we are, and that's and we're not gonna
- 5:56Speaker 5: let it happen again. Learn from it, don't let it
- 5:58Speaker 5: happen again, and let's see what kind of push we
- 6:00Speaker 5: can make. So hopefully that's what's being pushed to a
- 6:03Speaker 5: team today.
- 6:04Speaker 3: If you're scoring at home, that's two two cuss hoards
- 6:08Speaker 3: for the show, if I think that's the official count. Kyle, Uh,
- 6:11Speaker 3: you're a former pitcher. Lance is a former pitcher, and
- 6:14Speaker 3: the memory serves baseball is really about starting pitching. So
- 6:18Speaker 3: you uh, you have a bad game, you you blan
- 6:21Speaker 3: like the bit uh as as some would say does
- 6:25Speaker 3: the next day starter put it on his shoulders. It's
- 6:27Speaker 3: kind of lahy going tonight against Anaheim. Do you guys
- 6:32Speaker 3: put that on your shoulder and go, Okay, time to
- 6:34Speaker 3: write this ship.
- 6:35Speaker 4: It's on me.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Well, I'm gonna I'm gonna stop you a little bit
- 6:40Speaker 1: here because I think, you know, sure the sixth inning there,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, Andre let it let it get away from
- 6:46Speaker 1: a little bit, but got into the sixth inning was
- 6:49Speaker 1: as economical you possibly could be through five innings. Uh,
- 6:53Speaker 1: you know, ended up with a seven round lead, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 1: a couple of walks obviously, you know, really kind of
- 6:59Speaker 1: started that with a singles, and then I think one
- 7:03Speaker 1: of his runs, one of his inherent runners scored, so
- 7:06Speaker 1: I still only think his line looked by three. He
- 7:09Speaker 1: left when it was seven to two, So the end
- 7:11Speaker 1: of the inning, it's seven to three after six. As
- 7:15Speaker 1: a starter, sure it's not your cleanest game, but when
- 7:19Speaker 1: the team gives you seven runs, given up three, you
- 7:22Speaker 1: did your job, especially getting into the sixth inning. Sure
- 7:25Speaker 1: you'd love to have that inning not get away from you,
- 7:27Speaker 1: maybe get into the seventh. I get it that's not
- 7:30Speaker 1: always going to be a clean picture like that, but
- 7:33Speaker 1: I don't want to necessarily put this on Andre.
- 7:36Speaker 2: You know, there's a couple of bullpen.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Guys that came in, and how many times has it
- 7:39Speaker 1: happened to the Cardinals work the few bullpen guys that
- 7:42Speaker 1: come in, all of them end up not having their
- 7:44Speaker 1: best outing. They really needed one guy essentially to put
- 7:48Speaker 1: up a zero, you know, and that's happened quite a
- 7:50Speaker 1: bit this year. So I'm gonna take the heat off
- 7:53Speaker 1: Andre for this one.
- 7:54Speaker 4: He's been really good.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Just a couple of walks, out in that inning, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: I think some of it could be kind of what
- 7:59Speaker 1: Lance was saying. I think Andre is not like this,
- 8:02Speaker 1: but I think it's easy to start a pitcher to
- 8:04Speaker 1: get into that fifth, sixth, seventh, any with a big lead,
- 8:07Speaker 1: I think you're cruising and kind of take the foot
- 8:08Speaker 1: off the gas a little bit. And this team is
- 8:11Speaker 1: not a team that can do that. Started pitching offense whatever.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think they might have gotten a little bit relaxed
- 8:17Speaker 1: and a little bit complacent there in the last three
- 8:19Speaker 1: four innings and it.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Caught up to him.
- 8:21Speaker 1: But Kyle Leahy is gonna go out there and he
- 8:24Speaker 1: just needs to throw the ball well like he has
- 8:26Speaker 1: been and give a team a chance to win. But
- 8:28Speaker 1: I am not going to allow Andre Plante to kind
- 8:32Speaker 1: of wear too much of this because I thought he
- 8:34Speaker 1: threw the ball extremely well except for a couple of
- 8:36Speaker 1: batters in the sixth.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Don't misconstrue what I said, because there's a list of
- 8:40Speaker 3: guys who were contributing to a bad loss last night.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Andre was not on the list. Okay, What I meant
- 8:47Speaker 3: is after the bullpen, the defense gotcha, the base running collapses,
- 8:53Speaker 3: then the starting pitcher of the next day. In this case,
- 8:56Speaker 3: Laby says, you know what, we're past that.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Lance.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Did you ever have a situation where you're like, okay,
- 9:04Speaker 3: I got this, we need to get back on track.
- 9:07Speaker 3: It's go tume.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Yeah, he's going to take out for Plante.
- 9:10Speaker 5: That was that was a little his little whipping dog
- 9:13Speaker 5: as a little baby that he brought.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Along with him.
- 9:15Speaker 5: So he'll always have Dra's back, which which Dre needs
- 9:19Speaker 5: that because he's had some people undercutting him along the way,
- 9:21Speaker 5: so I need someone to build him up. So Kyle's
- 9:23Speaker 5: good for that for him. Yes, you want to be
- 9:26Speaker 5: the guy that's quote unquote the stopper. I guess when
- 9:30Speaker 5: you lose a couple in a row, you want to
- 9:32Speaker 5: be the guy that make sure it doesn't turn into
- 9:35Speaker 5: a you know, three or four game losing street. You
- 9:38Speaker 5: want to be the guy that you know they look to.
- 9:40Speaker 5: It's like, okay, our bullpens kind of shot because we
- 9:44Speaker 5: had you know, bad, bad game the night before where
- 9:46Speaker 5: we had to use you know, five or six arms
- 9:49Speaker 5: or something like that. So all in all, you want
- 9:51Speaker 5: to be the guy that they look to and say, hey,
- 9:53Speaker 5: I know he's going today. I know I'm going to
- 9:55Speaker 5: get a quality start. I know I'm gonna you know,
- 9:57Speaker 5: we got a chance to win the game. So yes,
- 9:59Speaker 5: you put that on yourself because you want that, because
- 10:02Speaker 5: that's how you make money in this game, and that's
- 10:04Speaker 5: how you become a bona fide major league starter, and
- 10:08Speaker 5: you do what you're supposed to do, and that show up.
- 10:11Speaker 5: Low quality starts help your team win games. So I
- 10:14Speaker 5: would say every guy in the rotation will put that
- 10:17Speaker 5: pressure on them are themselves and they should. And I
- 10:19Speaker 5: think tonight it's not quite there yet, dire where it's like, hey,
- 10:23Speaker 5: we have to have a great start out of somebody.
- 10:25Speaker 5: But yeah, you look out up, you look at it
- 10:28Speaker 5: and be like, hey, we need to go. If I
- 10:30Speaker 5: go out tonight and I though seven shutout and we
- 10:32Speaker 5: went and we win a ballgame, all's forgotten about the
- 10:34Speaker 5: last series. We win this series. Next thing, you know,
- 10:37Speaker 5: we're five hundred to start to you know, off to
- 10:39Speaker 5: start the road trip on the second half, which isn't bad.
- 10:43Speaker 5: So that's where they're at right now, all right.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And uh, I think Kyle is certainly well equipped to
- 10:49Speaker 3: go out there and give the Cardinals everything they need.
- 10:52Speaker 3: And by the way, Cardinal territory very much as a
- 10:55Speaker 3: group collectively pro Andre Polonte gonna take a break here.
- 11:00Speaker 3: You're watching Cardinal Territory on the foul Territory Network.
- 11:04Speaker 4: What if you can actually have it all?
- 11:06Speaker 6: And I'm talking about Mintmobile taking the premium wireless bouginess crats,
- 11:11Speaker 6: but then bringing it to the transparency in pricing and
- 11:15Speaker 6: the affordability in pricing.
- 11:17Speaker 1: They're going to lay everything out there with a cheap
- 11:20Speaker 1: bill that you know what everybody can handle right now.
- 11:23Speaker 6: You can even bring your current phone and your number.
- 11:26Speaker 6: If you're thinking about it and you're like, I'm worried
- 11:28Speaker 6: about that, No worries. They have you covered because they're
- 11:31Speaker 6: able to convert people all the time to the Mintmobile way.
- 11:34Speaker 6: Go to mintmobile dot com slash territory. That's mintmobile dot
- 11:37Speaker 6: com slash territory. Cut your wireless bill of fifteen bucks

- 11:43Speaker 6: There's no catch upfront payment of forty five dollars for
- 11:46Speaker 6: three months, ninety dollars for six months, or one hundred
- 11:48Speaker 6: and eighty dollars for twelve month. Plan required fifteen dollars
- 11:51Speaker 6: per month equivalent taxes and fees extra initial plan term
- 11:54Speaker 6: only greater than fifty gigabytes may slow when network is busy.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Includes up to twenty gigabyte hotspot capable device required availability,
- 12:02Speaker 6: speed and coverage varies Cement Mobile dot Com.
- 12:05Speaker 3: The Cards just off the All Star break and right
- 12:08Speaker 3: now they jump into a twenty game in twenty days situation.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Right they had a little rest and everything, and it's
- 12:17Speaker 3: right back into the grind. So they're gonna make some moves.
- 12:21Speaker 3: There's no question, Kyle, of all the guys in the
- 12:24Speaker 3: minor leaguers, right in the minor leagues right now, who
- 12:26Speaker 3: do you want to see you get a shot to
- 12:28Speaker 3: help the Cardinals get through this rough patchable a lot
- 12:32Speaker 3: of games in a lot of days.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I mean, I think when you're playing twenty and twenty,
- 12:40Speaker 1: you're gonna need at some point. You're never be gonna
- 12:43Speaker 1: need a long guy. Bullpen help is something that is
- 12:48Speaker 1: probably gonna be needed. I think at some point we're
- 12:51Speaker 1: gonna want to see probably one of these young pitchers,
- 12:54Speaker 1: whether it's a Clinton, Matthews or somebody like that, come up.
- 12:57Speaker 1: You know, wouldn't mind seem dobbin some like that getting
- 13:02Speaker 1: an extra chance and and really kind of getting some
- 13:05Speaker 1: good innings. You know, I think there's there's a couple
- 13:09Speaker 1: of players probably I think offensively they've been swinging about well.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So I don't necessarily think this team needs a spark
- 13:14Speaker 1: that way. But I'm assuming there's gonna be a picture
- 13:18Speaker 1: that needs to come up and and really maybe it's maybe.
- 13:21Speaker 2: It's as simple as.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Hey, uh, you know, we've got a six or seven
- 13:25Speaker 1: run lead here, We're gonna put you in to finish
- 13:27Speaker 1: this game and get your first career save or something
- 13:29Speaker 1: like that. You know, just something something cool that injects
- 13:32Speaker 1: a little bit of life and and saves a few
- 13:35Speaker 1: arms down there.
- 13:35Speaker 2: I think that could be needed at some point.
- 13:38Speaker 4: How about you lance.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Idea, when you get to this many games in this
- 13:44Speaker 5: many days, you're looking at you're looking at the pictures, right,
- 13:47Speaker 5: you know, is it is it time to you know,
- 13:50Speaker 5: who's going to come up and be a guy you're
- 13:52Speaker 5: looking at you know, the team kinses in the world
- 13:55Speaker 5: and stuff like that. Is it are we bringing them
- 13:58Speaker 5: up to? You know, I'll maybe showcase them to add
- 14:02Speaker 5: to at the same time. I remember in the past
- 14:04Speaker 5: they would bring you up for like a day or
- 14:05Speaker 5: two right before the deadline, just to say you have
- 14:07Speaker 5: major league experience to up their value. I remember that
- 14:10Speaker 5: little little thing too, so, but yes, I would say
- 14:14Speaker 5: you got to arm that you might you might, you
- 14:16Speaker 5: might not expect coming up to to see what they're
- 14:20Speaker 5: capable of. I don't know where they are on this
- 14:21Speaker 5: on the uh on the forty man roster. I think
- 14:24Speaker 5: we're full. So there's some guys that have kind of
- 14:28Speaker 5: come up out of the woodwork this year and throw
- 14:30Speaker 5: the ball really well. Is it time to get them
- 14:33Speaker 5: a chance? Likes you know. I don't think Quinn's on
- 14:35Speaker 5: the on the forty man either, So there are going
- 14:38Speaker 5: to be arms that are going to be needed, not
- 14:40Speaker 5: only now but also in the second half, especially if
- 14:43Speaker 5: you trade away the people that you've been trying to
- 14:45Speaker 5: trade away since we left ring training.
- 14:48Speaker 3: You bring up a good point about the forty man,
- 14:49Speaker 3: because they're going to have to do some transactional gymnastics
- 14:54Speaker 3: if they want to pitcher. I think it's time for
- 14:56Speaker 3: coin Matthews. Here's why they're gonna need another starter, right.
- 14:59Speaker 3: They've been trying to be as careful as they can
- 15:02Speaker 3: with their starters to make sure they're not piling up
- 15:05Speaker 3: too many innings. But at some point they're gonna have
- 15:08Speaker 3: to give one of the young guys a shot to
- 15:10Speaker 3: see what he has. Quinn Matthews, We've heard about him
- 15:13Speaker 3: for a number of years. He's twenty five, and he's
- 15:15Speaker 3: putting together a solid year at Memphis four and three
- 15:18Speaker 3: three point three nine ERA one hundred and one kves
- 15:21Speaker 3: in eighty five innings. The problem is he walks everybody.
- 15:25Speaker 3: He walks too many guys. But that guy's a talent.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Do we break the glass on that guy, Kyler? Or
- 15:30Speaker 3: is it just me ranting and raving up in here?
- 15:34Speaker 4: Well?
- 15:35Speaker 1: Uh, I mean, I think walks is an issue, but
- 15:38Speaker 1: I also think that you know, the I guess the
- 15:42Speaker 1: automatic strikes one now being up in the big reason
- 15:45Speaker 1: is basically the same thing. But I know it's uh,
- 15:48Speaker 1: it's fairly easy to get yourself into some bad counts
- 15:50Speaker 1: as a picture down there and get yourself in a
- 15:52Speaker 1: walk situation. So some of that could be be that
- 15:55Speaker 1: strike zone. But I don't know. I think everybody changed
- 16:00Speaker 1: a little bit. So no matter how he is right
- 16:03Speaker 1: now in the minor leagues, things are gonna look a
- 16:06Speaker 1: little bit differ when he gets to the big leagues.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Whether it's the usage whether it's trusting his stuff and
- 16:11Speaker 1: doing something just a little bit different.
- 16:13Speaker 2: There's gonna be adjustments.
- 16:14Speaker 1: That that need to be made, and he's gonna figure
- 16:17Speaker 1: out the kind of pitcher he is, you know, once
- 16:19Speaker 1: he gets a few when he's into his career. So,
- 16:22Speaker 1: you know, I was I was always at least a
- 16:25Speaker 1: strikeout priending guy in the minor leagues, and I got
- 16:27Speaker 1: to the big leagues, and I think I had a
- 16:28Speaker 1: strikeout printing in you know, one.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Maybe two seasons.
- 16:31Speaker 1: So things change and hitters are different. So but I
- 16:35Speaker 1: think he's a guy that's that's earned that look, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: as well as a couple other guys. But he's a
- 16:39Speaker 1: guy that's earned that look. And when you need length
- 16:41Speaker 1: and when you need somebody to to get a starter
- 16:44Speaker 1: or save the bullpen, you know you're gonna look at
- 16:45Speaker 1: one of those depth starters. And let's face it, we
- 16:48Speaker 1: don't know what the trade deadline is gonna look like either,
- 16:50Speaker 1: so you know, we'll see what We'll see what happens
- 16:53Speaker 1: here in the next couple of weeks, but a couple
- 16:54Speaker 1: of those guys are probably gonna come up.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Let's what do you remember about your first big league start?
- 17:04Speaker 5: I remember being on short rest, which was great. I
- 17:06Speaker 5: appreciate that coming up. I remember sitting in the hotel.
- 17:11Speaker 5: I remember sitting in the hotel the night before. I
- 17:14Speaker 5: think I was facing I was facing the Giants so well,
- 17:18Speaker 5: they win Award series the year before. Nowadays, you get
- 17:21Speaker 5: to sit in the clubhouse. You actually get to be
- 17:23Speaker 5: acctimated with the team. Back then, you had to walk
- 17:27Speaker 5: in with your bag that day and go pitch. You know,
- 17:30Speaker 5: you can go up, you can play catch and go
- 17:32Speaker 5: over all your things that you need to do. Now
- 17:34Speaker 5: so you know, they really they really hold your hand
- 17:37Speaker 5: and get you ready.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Nowadays, we're back in the day.
- 17:40Speaker 5: They made you, They made you come in and earn it.
- 17:42Speaker 5: But yeah, no, it was fun and you remember being nervous.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Do you remember trying to call everybody and make sure
- 17:46Speaker 5: everybody was where they needed to be. But yeah, we've
- 17:49Speaker 5: got to I mean, I think there's gonna be quite
- 17:51Speaker 5: a few guys that in the second half that uh
- 17:53Speaker 5: they make their their debut. You're looking at you know,
- 17:56Speaker 5: a hundred Obbins is going to be a guy that
- 17:58Speaker 5: they they're gonna need in the second half. This this
- 18:01Speaker 5: Mason Molina kid seems to be film all very well.
- 18:04Speaker 5: He's got almost one hundred strikeouts and seventy some innings
- 18:06Speaker 5: in the minor leagues this year too, And then you
- 18:09Speaker 5: have Quinn Matthews. So to answer your question about do
- 18:13Speaker 5: where they're going to have to add length and starters
- 18:15Speaker 5: and stuff like that, those three guys all fit the
- 18:17Speaker 5: bill of guys that can come up and give them
- 18:19Speaker 5: innings in the second half, maybe spot start, maybe do
- 18:22Speaker 5: some different things that they're gonna need, because whether it's
- 18:27Speaker 5: trade or whether it's the season goes on, and nobody
- 18:30Speaker 5: on this rotation's ever thrown over one hundred and fifty
- 18:33Speaker 5: five innings in a regular season or one hundred and
- 18:35Speaker 5: sixty innings in a regular season. They've got a lot
- 18:38Speaker 5: of things that they're going to have to navigate here
- 18:41Speaker 5: in the second half. And that's not even trading guys away.
- 18:46Speaker 1: And on top you kind of have to on top
- 18:49Speaker 1: of that, hold on Jim on'ment to step in here.
- 18:51Speaker 1: On top of that, you have to somewhat plan for
- 18:55Speaker 1: October innix, all right, So I mean you can't you
- 18:59Speaker 1: can't just run the guys out there, and guys that
- 19:01Speaker 1: have never been to one hundred and sixty hundred and
- 19:03Speaker 1: seventy innings, push them to that limit and then say, hey,
- 19:06Speaker 1: by the way, you could have another fifteen innings here
- 19:09Speaker 1: or twenty innings with a few more starts. So yeah,
- 19:13Speaker 1: I mean, I think those guys that Lance mentioned are
- 19:15Speaker 1: going to be pretty important here to make sure that
- 19:18Speaker 1: the guys that you do keep and that you have
- 19:20Speaker 1: not traded away, assuming they trade anybody away. Even if
- 19:24Speaker 1: they keep everybody, you got to make sure that you
- 19:26Speaker 1: have guys who can make a few starts in the
- 19:28Speaker 1: playoffs and they're not totally gassed.
- 19:30Speaker 3: And we have a bunch of guys in the minor
- 19:32Speaker 3: leagues do them all. I think fans are looking forward
- 19:35Speaker 3: to seeing what they got at the big league level.
- 19:37Speaker 3: That brings us to our Daily Dinger segment, brought to
- 19:41Speaker 3: you by Fan Duel, and my pick for the Daily
- 19:50Speaker 3: Dinger segment for today, I'm going to go with with JJ.
- 19:55Speaker 3: They're faced and Soriano or right hander tonight. Last time
- 19:58Speaker 3: I didn't give you the name of the start of
- 20:00Speaker 3: their facing. I am today so I don't get criticized
- 20:04Speaker 3: or or mocked on the podcast.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Uh.
- 20:07Speaker 3: JJ has been just crushing the ball since the since
- 20:12Speaker 3: the All Star break, I'm going with JJ. Who you
- 20:14Speaker 3: got Kyle's looking down? Lance, you have a I'm going
- 20:21Speaker 3: Burley Berlin. It's good, it's good.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So I uh, Jim, I think when you spoke about
- 20:29Speaker 1: Leahy and what he can bring to the team after
- 20:31Speaker 1: a tough loss, I'm thinking that in this situation today,
- 20:35Speaker 1: it'd be great if the offense could go ahead and
- 20:38Speaker 1: do what they did again. I think that would be
- 20:40Speaker 1: even more of a statement here. Uh So, I am
- 20:44Speaker 1: gonna go with Walker and a first inning to run Homer,
- 20:53Speaker 1: get the boys on the board, give Lahy some breathing room,
- 20:56Speaker 1: and to make a statement here that yesterday was just
- 20:59Speaker 1: a blip.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Not only are you giving us a name, you're giving
- 21:03Speaker 3: us the inning and what he does. Thank you for that,
- 21:06Speaker 3: and thank you. FanDuel Swing for the Fences with FanDuel.

- 21:35Speaker 3: All right, JJ Weatherholt got the extension. I know you
- 21:39Speaker 3: guys covered that, but I wanted to hear from you.
- 21:41Speaker 3: And if it's a recycling material, then recycle away. But
- 21:46Speaker 3: I just wonder JJ gets the extension. There's other guys
- 21:50Speaker 3: like Walker who fan saves, you know, bring that guy.
- 21:53Speaker 3: There's other guys extend that guy. So i'mon, Lance, is
- 21:58Speaker 3: there in a clubhouse one young guy gets the bag
- 22:02Speaker 3: said bag and then the others don't. Everyone roots for
- 22:06Speaker 3: each other. I get it, it's a team sport, but
- 22:09Speaker 3: in reality, everyone wants the bag. So I just wonder
- 22:13Speaker 3: is there any of that going on in the clubhouse.
- 22:18Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know personally or like if it's true.
- 22:23Speaker 5: I'm not talking to anyone to ask. But we were
- 22:27Speaker 5: obviously you weren't paying attention because we talked that we
- 22:29Speaker 5: would give Lars a extension right now to make sure
- 22:32Speaker 5: that he stays in that clubhouse and stays part of
- 22:35Speaker 5: what they're building. Just because personality, what he can do
- 22:38Speaker 5: with multiple spots in the lineup and all three outfield positions,
- 22:43Speaker 5: I think he's as a core piece that you have
- 22:45Speaker 5: to have on this roster and then you look around
- 22:48Speaker 5: and you're looking at you know, JJ's and it was
- 22:51Speaker 5: in a good spot to get it. Walker's establishing himself
- 22:55Speaker 5: as an elite power hitter, which now is going to
- 22:59Speaker 5: be hard to extending because he's already close to the
- 23:02Speaker 5: arbitration process, so he's inclined to wait it out. The
- 23:07Speaker 5: one that Kyle and I have talked about off camera is, uh,
- 23:14Speaker 5: Mason win and is are you asking do people get
- 23:18Speaker 5: their feelings hurt when someone gets an extension and someone
- 23:20Speaker 5: else doesn't. Yes, I have seen it in the past,
- 23:24Speaker 5: not saying this is what's going on, but when you
- 23:27Speaker 5: trade Donovan away, Mason's coming off of gold Glove year,
- 23:33Speaker 5: knows that that he's a spark plug, that the way
- 23:36Speaker 5: that he is, and then and kind of thrives off
- 23:38Speaker 5: of that, doesn't get the leadoff spot and doesn't get
- 23:43Speaker 5: an extension, and JJ gets both. I you know, don't know,
- 23:48Speaker 5: uh if it's true or if anything is is there,
- 23:51Speaker 5: but feelings can get hurt and people can get pissed
- 23:55Speaker 5: off when you know they've been there, they've been doing it,
- 23:57Speaker 5: and other guys are not handed things, but they're handed
- 24:01Speaker 5: things a little bit and JJ's took took those things
- 24:04Speaker 5: and ran with it and has become you know, what
- 24:07Speaker 5: we all hoped he would be. But when you look
- 24:09Speaker 5: at it in a way, for Mason, Mason has dealt
- 24:15Speaker 5: with a lot and he's not gotten anything in return,
- 24:18Speaker 5: And when other people are, you have a tendency to
- 24:22Speaker 5: feel certain ways.
- 24:24Speaker 3: That's a fair point, Kyle. In our last one that
- 24:26Speaker 3: you guys weren't part of, I was like, I want
- 24:29Speaker 3: to see when get an extension because I think if
- 24:33Speaker 3: you can have JJ and Win up the middle for
- 24:35Speaker 3: years and I think by the way the offense is
- 24:38Speaker 3: gonna come from Mason Win. Okay, I think he's dealt
- 24:40Speaker 3: with some stuff. He's going to be better offensively than
- 24:43Speaker 3: he is now. But certainly Goldblub, I would like to
- 24:46Speaker 3: see those guys be the up the middle combination for
- 24:50Speaker 3: years to come.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I think there's a couple of things here in play
- 24:56Speaker 1: when it comes to these type of conversations in these moves.
- 25:00Speaker 1: The interesting thing about how baseball media and things work
- 25:04Speaker 1: out is you very rarely hear when a team and
- 25:07Speaker 1: a player are working on extension and it doesn't work out.
- 25:10Speaker 1: So we have no idea if the Cardinals have approached Mason,
- 25:14Speaker 1: if they've approached Burley, if they've approached any of these guys.
- 25:17Speaker 1: If this is free agency, you know the offer and
- 25:19Speaker 1: everything else that have already happened, which is, you know,
- 25:22Speaker 1: kind of absurd.
- 25:23Speaker 4: But.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I think an interesting situation a couple of years
- 25:29Speaker 1: ago or last year I think happened with the Orioles
- 25:31Speaker 1: when Basio came up and he played however many games,
- 25:34Speaker 1: he got an extension. Here's Adlee Rutchman, you know, waiting
- 25:37Speaker 1: for an extension. So I think there's can definitely be
- 25:40Speaker 1: some animosity. If you have a good locker room and
- 25:43Speaker 1: you have a good culture, and you have players who
- 25:45Speaker 1: are you having each other's backs, then I think, you know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: a lot less of that can affect the locker room.
- 25:52Speaker 1: But we've also seen a team like a Braves take however,
- 25:56Speaker 1: many of their players and extend quite a bit of
- 25:58Speaker 1: them and saying, you guys are gonna play together for
- 26:00Speaker 1: the next five to six years, and that's how it's
- 26:03Speaker 1: gonna be, and we think it's gonna work out really well.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Now you have a deal.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Like the Austin Riley deal that this year and last
- 26:09Speaker 1: year doesn't necessarily look like it's playing out too well.
- 26:11Speaker 1: But I'm guessing everybody in that locker room is still
- 26:13Speaker 1: glad that Austin Riley's ringing. So if if I were
- 26:17Speaker 1: in charge here, I would be looking at these four
- 26:20Speaker 1: or five guys that I want to have to be
- 26:22Speaker 1: a part of this team for the long haul, and
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'd say, what do we got to do to keep
- 26:26Speaker 1: you guys together?
- 26:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 26:29Speaker 1: It's a little bit risky, I think, because you don't
- 26:31Speaker 1: know what the player is going to turn into Austin Riley.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Some of easy guys have had ups and down years
- 26:36Speaker 1: on the Cardinals. But I'd be looking at Burley, Mason,
- 26:41Speaker 1: Newt Walker, Herrera, just to name a few, and see,
- 26:45Speaker 1: you know.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Okay, we got a web hole locked up.
- 26:47Speaker 1: What do you guys think about, you know, finding a
- 26:50Speaker 1: deal to keep you guys together and have everybody happy.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I don't know, you we see a lot throughout the years,
- 26:58Speaker 1: right you know. I saw the Minnesota Twins sign a
- 27:00Speaker 1: couple of pictures one offseason right after Phil hughes dominated
- 27:04Speaker 1: and he had had a three year deal. Well the
- 27:06Speaker 1: next year, Terry Ryan ripped up Phil Hugheson's deal and said, hey,
- 27:09Speaker 1: we just paid two starting pitchers twice. While we're paying
- 27:12Speaker 1: you and you just had almost a cy young year,
- 27:15Speaker 1: We're going to up your extension just to make sure
- 27:18Speaker 1: that Phil felt valued and Phil felt like he was
- 27:20Speaker 1: charc toward the organization. So I do think there's some
- 27:24Speaker 1: of that that can be important, but I think a
- 27:28Speaker 1: lot of it is how we're going to prepare this
- 27:30Speaker 1: team for the future, and are these guys the ones
- 27:32Speaker 1: that we want to have around and do we think
- 27:33Speaker 1: that they're a playoff culture and a playoff team. If
- 27:37Speaker 1: these five guys are apartment.
- 27:39Speaker 3: Say, that's a good point. Communication, I think is the key,
- 27:42Speaker 3: because I think everyone would like to see all these
- 27:44Speaker 3: guys be part of the Cardinal future. That's gonna do
- 27:47Speaker 3: it for this edition. Colein s, if you opened the show,
- 27:50Speaker 3: I think you should close it because we want to
- 27:54Speaker 3: have a little consistency. You opened the show.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, Jim. I think this is more
- 28:00Speaker 1: of like, hey, you know you were back. We weren't
- 28:03Speaker 1: quite sure if you were going to take an extra
- 28:04Speaker 1: day on the weekend, so I was prepared. All right,
- 28:07Speaker 1: since you're here, You've got your end of the show
- 28:10Speaker 1: where you want to lead into the next episode.
- 28:12Speaker 2: This is your deal, Jim.
- 28:14Speaker 1: We just I just filled in, all right, So if
- 28:16Speaker 1: I don't have to fill in, then I'd rather just
- 28:18Speaker 1: be the one that talks a lot.
- 28:19Speaker 2: So you take us out of here and then hopefully
- 28:21Speaker 2: you're here on Thursday.
- 28:23Speaker 3: You guys didn't just didn't just fill in. You put
- 28:26Speaker 3: together quality podcasts and I appreciate it. That's gonna do
- 28:30Speaker 3: it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you
- 28:33Speaker 3: next time. Hopefully that episode won't suck
