Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Who were we to believe when it comes to kids
- 0:02Speaker 1: in motels, it's undeniably a disaster. Four thousand. At its worst,
- 0:07Speaker 1: we had four thousand kids living in motels and an
- 0:09Speaker 1: emergency accommodation in New Zealand. And the last lot who
- 0:13Speaker 1: said it was a complex problem that required complex solutions.
- 0:18Speaker 1: They said it would take time, and we sort of
- 0:21Speaker 1: bought that argument because it does seem incredibly complex, right.
- 0:24Speaker 1: And then yesterday the government comes along and claims to
- 0:27Speaker 1: have cut the number of households living in emergency housing
- 0:30Speaker 1: by third in six months. What's more, they said in
- 0:35Speaker 1: Auckland they've almost halved the number of people living in
- 0:39Speaker 1: emergency housing in three months. How can you have the
- 0:43Speaker 1: number of people in emergency housing in three months? Does
- 0:46Speaker 1: that make sense to you? In christ Church has gone
- 0:48Speaker 1: from two to eighty five to one hundred and eighty
- 0:51Speaker 1: three in three months. They said they'd used quote intensive
- 0:57Speaker 1: work to cut the numbers. I don't know whether I'm
- 0:59Speaker 1: just cynical, but I'm do you believe that you know
- 1:04Speaker 1: or do you think there's some trick, some tricks of
- 1:07Speaker 1: you know, some fudging of the numbers here or the
- 1:10Speaker 1: categories that they're using something like that. If all we
- 1:13Speaker 1: needed was a bit of intensive work, surely we could
- 1:16Speaker 1: have cut through that long waiting list a lot earlier.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Q Karen McNulty on three News last night, having a
- 1:23Speaker 1: crack at the government.
- 1:24Speaker 2: They both claiming credit for something they didn't do, and
- 1:28Speaker 2: they're also crying about something when they've made it harder
- 1:31Speaker 2: for people to access it.
- 1:33Speaker 1: He then went on to say this.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Any honest way to deal with the issue of emergency
- 1:40Speaker 3: housing is to build more social houses, and that's the
- 1:44Speaker 3: very thing the government has pulled back on.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Wrong. There is another way that you can deal with
- 1:50Speaker 1: the problem of an increase in demand for social housing.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's to grow an economy, to get people into well
- 1:57Speaker 1: paid jobs. Not even everybody wants to be at the
- 2:02Speaker 1: mercy of a failed social housing system, do they.
