- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Reminder, there are time stamps in every single description.
- 0:24There have been for about 3 years.
- 0:27So please no comments about time stamps.
- 0:30If you don't care about the intro and the business updates
- 0:33and the things that I talked about at the start, just go to
- 0:35the description because there are always time stamps.
- 0:38All right, the first story that I have for you guys, I'm going
- 0:41to be honest, today was a bit of like a light Newsday.
- 0:44That doesn't happen so often where I'm like struggling to
- 0:47find relevant stories. Today was one of those days.
- 0:52Let's get into it. So the first three that I have
- 0:54for you guys is that Bella Hadid has claimed that she has never
- 0:57had a facelift or a fox eye lift in her new Vogue beauty secrets
- 1:02video. So Bella did a Vogue UK beauty
- 1:05secrets like get ready with me video and in it she said they
- 1:09always laugh. People think I've gotten a
- 1:10facelift lift or gotten that cat eye thing, whatever it's called,
- 1:13but I'm going to teach you an easier way.
- 1:15OK? So normally I'm not like out
- 1:17here commenting on people's plastic surgery, on the work
- 1:20they've had done. I get Botox and I have had lip
- 1:24filler and I talk about that. I'm open with that.
- 1:27I've never had like surgery per SE, but like, those are the
- 1:29things that I've had done. And after she said this, OK,
- 1:33like, I don't know if this is just me being like so naive
- 1:35because like, of course the Internet is like she's lying.
- 1:38I don't know if this is just me being like the most naive ever,
- 1:41but I was like, would she really straight up lie to us like this?
- 1:46I know Kylie Jenner lied to us about her lip filler, but she
- 1:49was like 16. I remember when she would just
- 1:52say like, Oh no, I just like over line my lips and all of my
- 1:55friends. I actually this is like me
- 1:57outing myself, but all of my friends believed her.
- 2:00I remember this in university and I was always like, no, she
- 2:03very clearly has lip filler, but that's because I had been eyeing
- 2:05lip filler since I was like 11, which is like so toxic, I know.
- 2:08But I just thought, OK, Bella Hadid, like, could she really be
- 2:12standing here just like full on lying to us?
- 2:15Maybe she's had a procedure that is not called like a facelift or
- 2:18a fox eye lift. So that's how she can like say
- 2:21it. But I'm going to say, first of
- 2:23all, her brows actually don't look like they are currently
- 2:26lifted right now. Maybe she's had threads.
- 2:30Oh, maybe she had threads back in the day and they've kind of
- 2:32like threads go away, right? That's temporary.
- 2:34Anyways, my other theory. So then I started Googling
- 2:37pictures of her and I was like, you know what?
- 2:40This is probably delusional of me, but I'm actually thinking
- 2:42maybe she never did. The reason being all of the
- 2:46photos that we think of when we think of like Bella Hadid fox
- 2:49eye lift, she has her hair pulled back super, super tight.
- 2:53And I don't know if a lot of us realize like when you have a
- 2:55celebrity hair stylist doing your hair like that and you're
- 2:58like, I want it select, I want it tight, I want it pulled, like
- 3:03how hard they can pull that. I think it's a combination
- 3:07possibly of like always having these really tight slicked hair.
- 3:10I think she definitely reshaped her brows so they like went
- 3:14upwards anyways, like giving Angry Birds vibes.
- 3:17I think obviously she lost some baby fat in her face.
- 3:20So that whole area looks a little bit more like sunken or
- 3:22like, you know, not as kind of youthful and plump.
- 3:25And the reason why I wanted to talk about this story is not
- 3:27because I'm like trying to figure out if Bella Hadid has
- 3:29lied to us or not. It's more because it got me
- 3:32thinking about the fact that, like, celebrity plastic surgery
- 3:35and this content, which Jordy and I did a deep dive on like
- 3:39years ago when it was just first popping off.
- 3:41And like, Laurie Hill, for example, was like just starting
- 3:44to build her YouTube channel and all those plastic surgeons were
- 3:47just starting to, like, use social media and analyze
- 3:50celebrity faces. I think that content has
- 3:53actually, like, changed our brain chemistry.
- 3:56And I know the purpose of it was to expose, you know, like, not
- 4:00everyone looks like this. Like, you don't feel bad about
- 4:02yourself if you don't look like Bella Hadid because like, here's
- 4:05all the work she's probably had done.
- 4:07But when I watch that content as someone who has work done, I
- 4:10think like I don't. I just don't know if they've had
- 4:14all of that, everything they say that these people have had.
- 4:17Because when I got lip filler, it genuinely changed.
- 4:20Like how big my nose looked. It genuinely changed.
- 4:23Like the proportions of my face as I've aged.
- 4:26My jawline looks different, my eyes look different, my eyes
- 4:29look different day-to-day. I hold water like crazy, like I
- 4:33am so puffy sometimes depending on what I've eaten the day
- 4:36before. And then like the next day I can
- 4:39look totally different. Like there's so much fluctuation
- 4:42going on, at least for me. And I think also probably
- 4:44because I do have lead filler. So it's like hyaluronic acid
- 4:46fibes. And then I think about the
- 4:48plastic surgery analysis content that we consume.
- 4:51It is so, I mean, it's done for clickbait obviously, right?
- 4:55Like who doesn't want like when you're scrolling, who doesn't
- 4:57stop on a celebrity analysis plastic surgery video?
- 4:59Like, of course, of course, it's so, so interesting and it makes
- 5:04you feel so much better about yourself.
- 5:05I think that's a content niche that's a little bit out of
- 5:07control. I know they claim that the
- 5:10purpose of it, a lot of these creators claim that the purpose
- 5:12of it is to kind of like expose unrealistic beauty standards and
- 5:16make you feel better about yourself.
- 5:17And I'm sure it does that for some people.
- 5:19But I do think a lot of these creators who make this type of
- 5:22content, they know it gets views, it gets clicks, it's
- 5:25going to make them money. People are going to pop off in
- 5:28the comments section and they know that it's also content that
- 5:31even and though it's like judging what other people look
- 5:34like, you can kind of do it under the guise of like sitting
- 5:37on this moral high ground of like, well, I'm just trying to
- 5:40like educate people so that they feel better about themselves.
- 5:43OK, The next story that I have for you guys is that popular
- 5:45anti consumerist TikTok creator Mallory Brooks is feuding with
- 5:49viral fashion brand Odd Muse. You know what?
- 5:52She's actually not like anti consumerist.
- 5:53She's more just, she's in the business of educating people
- 5:58about like ethical and unethical apparel business practices.
- 6:02So Mallory Brooks is the creator behind Please Don't Buy That,
- 6:06which is a social account that essentially seeks to educate
- 6:08users on practices in the apparel industry.
- 6:11Part of her platform is being really open about like calling
- 6:15out brands when she feels they're not doing good enough,
- 6:18when she feels like they're being deceptive and lying.
- 6:21And she'll do reviews, like she'll do clothing reviews,
- 6:23merch reviews and stuff and tell people to buy it or to not buy
- 6:26it. And now she has called out Odd
- 6:28Muse, which is I'm sure most of you guys know Odd Muse, but they
- 6:32are a massively popular TikTok favorite fashion brand by a
- 6:37British woman named Amy Smale. Amy is like the blueprint of
- 6:41documenting your founder journey on TikTok.
- 6:43I swear to God, like all all the e-commerce girls just like copy
- 6:46what Amy has done because she I feel like was one of the first
- 6:49that got really big from that kind of like watch me build out
- 6:53loud type of content. So she's very popular.
- 6:56Like people have such a parasocial relationship with
- 6:58her. So they buy her clothing.
- 6:59Her clothing is very cute. Like don't get me wrong.
- 7:02So they used to be based in the UK and then she recently
- 7:05relocated to New York and let me say she did take a private jet
- 7:08from London to New York. So she is slang odd muse.
- 7:12It's slang. 2 days ago Mallory posted a video basically like
- 7:16laughing about the fact that Odd Muse calls itself a slow fashion
- 7:20and sustainable brand when Mallory says in her opinion it
- 7:24is obviously a fast fashion brand.
- 7:27Introduced to the brand Odd Muse this week and she loves to
- 7:31describe the company as slow fashion and sustainable.
- 7:38Within about, you know, 42 seconds of entering the website,
- 7:43it's really clear they are fast fashioned by every sense of the
- 7:48definition. But she takes the angle that
- 7:50because the retails are really high and that they're, you know,
- 7:54made really well that their investment pieces.
- 7:58Let me just be clear in saying it's my belief that there is 0
- 8:04room for you to call a polyester dress an investment piece.
- 8:09It's all just marketing. It's all bullshit.
- 8:11It is not governed by any laws. People can say whatever they
- 8:15want and obviously it works. You know, she's very successful
- 8:19and the brand does huge numbers. Amy saw this TikTok and
- 8:23responded with this. Fast fashion, poor working
- 8:26conditions, long working hours, underpaid.
- 8:28Multiple factory partners forced to make orders within one week
- 8:32or they will choose another supplier.
- 8:34No craftsmanship, purely speed. Head office staff experience
- 8:37slow, professional and novelty perks.
- 8:39Odd Muse One family run factory in China takes up to five weeks
- 8:43to create our orders, 8 weeks during peak.
- 8:45This is due to craftsmanship and attention to detail.
- 8:48Created a custom polyester blend for durability that no brand has
- 8:51ever been able to replicate but is openly moving into Cotton's
- 8:54tube. Factory has all proper audits.
- 8:56Internal staff have progressed much more with Odd Muse than any
- 8:59other big corporation they were previously with and receive pay
- 9:02rises every single year. She keeps going.
- 9:05So when it says in every sense of the word, I want to challenge
- 9:07because This is why I am starting to dislike this app.
- 9:10Honestly, you could have done a whole video about me personally,
- 9:13I wouldn't have responded. But odd muse, I'll always defend
- 9:16what's right myself and my team have worked so hard for its
- 9:18genuine deserved success and it means everything to me and my
- 9:21family. Your words versus your knowledge
- 9:24in this video is not OK. Mallory was like, OK, if you're
- 9:27claiming this factory and this manufacturing process is so
- 9:30ethical, drop the name of your factory.
- 9:32And Amy would not provide that. Which honestly, like I think
- 9:36that's fair enough. She was like, I would not advise
- 9:38any small business owner to do that in a TikTok comments
- 9:40section. And because she is quite high
- 9:43profile on TikTok, she's like, they would just be inundated
- 9:45with requests, which I think is fair enough.
- 9:47However, then Mallory made another video and she said which
- 9:51I don't know. So I know a lot of you guys are
- 9:53like fashion or fashion adjacent who listen, so let me know.
- 9:57But you know, she said that brands that are like actually
- 10:01slow fashion, actually sustainable.
- 10:03They have B Corp registration or whatever.
- 10:06Like they will actually make it clear who does their
- 10:09manufacturing and all of their processes because that's an
- 10:12important part of like sharing and being transparent about the
- 10:16sustainability of their brand. So yeah, I would say most people
- 10:19are agreeing with Mallory. They're of course, like Amy
- 10:22stands and people in general who are just kind of like this is
- 10:24like tearing down like, you know, not a small business, but
- 10:27like in in independently owned, like female founded business and
- 10:31tons of people are like a 5 to 8 week turn around.
- 10:34Like is fast fashion like that's not slow fashion.
- 10:38But the most interesting part of this to me is I mean, Amy's like
- 10:43a master marketer. Like regardless of if her brand
- 10:47is ethical and sustainable and all these things, you know,
- 10:50aside from that, like it is very clear to me, she is an amazing
- 10:55marketer, content creator 1st. And unfortunately, almost
- 11:00unfortunately for her, because of this skill set that she has,
- 11:03like her brand just blew the fuck up so quickly.
- 11:07She's only been going for five years.
- 11:09So the reality of this, when she's like, I hate this app.
- 11:12You know, this is what's going to destroy this app.
- 11:15I actually think it's like the tech Bros that are destroying
- 11:19this app. The tech Bros are like
- 11:21destroying the world. They are destroying the
- 11:24Internet. It's not fashion commentators
- 11:26that are destroying the ecosystems online.
- 11:29The reality is because she has so many eyes on her brand so, so
- 11:33early. Yeah, Like, that is scary.
- 11:35Like you are going to unfortunately, get a lot of
- 11:38criticism. But if you are making claims
- 11:40like that and you do have all these eyeballs and you're
- 11:43reaping the benefits of all of those eyeballs, it's OK for
- 11:46people to hold you accountable for that and ask for proof of
- 11:51your claims and want you to be able to back up what you're
- 11:55saying, what you're selling to them, right?
- 11:56Because these are people who not only invest their time and
- 11:59energy like watching your content and building this
- 12:02parasocial relationship with you, but then and they're going
- 12:04out and directly buying your clothes.
- 12:07I think she's probably just shouldn't have responded.
- 12:09I understand why she did. And I like when we get critical
- 12:13comments and stuff like sometimes there were a lot of
- 12:16times I do respond because it feels so closely tied to you.
- 12:19So I totally get it. You want to defend your work,
- 12:21you want to defend your team, you want to defend yourself.
- 12:23I don't think she should have responded.
- 12:25I think that's ended up like being worse for her.
- 12:28I think literally Mallory would have just made like one video
- 12:31maybe and it would have moved on, but because she was
- 12:34responding and saying all these things but not really providing
- 12:37like receipts or proof to back it up, then of course it just
- 12:40like snowballed. Anyways, if anyone has shopped
- 12:43Odd Muse, please let me know. I have not let me know your
- 12:47experience with the quality. Let me know if you have any
- 12:49knowledge on like slow fashion versus fast fashion.
- 12:53I don't have any knowledge in that space, but even just from
- 12:57like the vibes I'm getting, slow fashion requires many more boxes
- 13:03ticked in my opinion. OK, the last one that I have for
- 13:06you guys, I didn't see this until this morning.
- 13:09Nobody told me my algorithms, they let me down this week.
- 13:13But Ruby, Frankie's son Chad went on the Squeeze podcast and
- 13:19talked about like his experience with his family, talked about
- 13:23his mother going to jail and like that whole situation.
- 13:26And it was so, so interesting. The Squeeze is the podcast by
- 13:30the Taylor Lautners. And I actually don't mind them
- 13:33as interviewers. Every once in a while I listen
- 13:35to their podcast and I find it OK.
- 13:38Like sometimes when it's celebrities interviewing other
- 13:40celebrities, you know, like it's, it's not the best, but I
- 13:44feel like maybe because there's two of them and they're married,
- 13:47so they're like incredibly comfortable with each other.
- 13:50It allows them to ask not like tougher questions, but like
- 13:55allows them to feel more comfortable in the interviewer
- 13:58seat because it's not just like a one-on-one interview,
- 14:01especially when it's like hard topics like this.
- 14:03I actually found them like pretty good at interviewing him.
- 14:07So as we know, Chad was the son of Ruby Frankie, who is now in
- 14:11jail. She was the matriarch of the 8
- 14:14passengers YouTube channel Mummy vlogger and then she got wrapped
- 14:18up into connections, which was some like LDS mixed with like
- 14:24abusive fake therapy practices called brainwashing organization
- 14:30by this woman named Jodi Hildebrand all mixed together
- 14:34and their whole family was going to quote UN quote therapy with
- 14:37Jodi. And then Ruby started to become
- 14:40like the face of connections like with Jodi and their
- 14:44practices were like super harsh, super abusive.
- 14:47And then they were arrested on child abuse for Chad's younger
- 14:50siblings. So Chad says that the day that
- 14:54everything started to like, really fall apart was the day
- 14:56that his mom uploaded the vlog where Chad said that he had been
- 15:01sleeping on a beanbag for seven months.
- 15:04He said that's when he noticed a big difference in her.
- 15:06She yelled at him for saying that on camera.
- 15:08So like she uploaded it and then all the backlash started and
- 15:12this is when TikTok, I think it was 2020 when this happened.
- 15:15So like TikTok was a thing. And he said that there was a
- 15:19girl that made like 1 long TikTok video about the situation
- 15:22and that just started to like snowball everything.
- 15:24And that started a hashtag free Chad movement where people were
- 15:29trying to literally like get him away from his mom.
- 15:32And he said once that started like when she realized she was
- 15:35getting all this backlash, she like yelled at him for saying
- 15:38that on camera. OK, Ruby, you posted that.
- 15:41You edited that video and then posted it.
- 15:43He talked about the free Chad movement and how that was like
- 15:46the most kind of impactful thing that's ever happened in his
- 15:51life. He says he has a hard time
- 15:52actually like remembering anything before Free Chad
- 15:55because obviously after that, that's when like everything blew
- 15:58up, right? So he was kind of talking about
- 16:01how like he just has a lot of like memory loss from like pre
- 16:05free Chad. He says he still loves his mom,
- 16:08but he will not have her in his life.
- 16:10He said that they would write letters or she would write him
- 16:14letters from jail. And they did have a phone call
- 16:17and he was kind of standing up to her.
- 16:19And it was the first time anyone had really stood up to her.
- 16:21He said we had to talk to her in like very spiritual terms so she
- 16:25could understand. Like we would say this is not
- 16:27very Jesus like, like Jesus would not do this.
- 16:29Jesus would not like this. And she was kind of still a
- 16:33little bit brainwashed when they were having that conversation.
- 16:36And then a couple weeks later she called him like sobbing and
- 16:39he said was a 5 minute phone call and he didn't even get a
- 16:42word in because she was just stopping saying you're right,
- 16:44I'm so sorry. And since then she's written
- 16:46letters. But he's like I love her and
- 16:48like I've moved on but I'm not going to have her in my life.
- 16:52He said after Ruby was arrested and everything blew up that he
- 16:56did a few weeks of therapy and then he never did it again.
- 17:00But he was like it was amazing doing therapy with like because
- 17:02obviously he had done therapy but with Jodi.
- 17:04And he's like, Jodi was just like, tell me what to do.
- 17:08And he's like, the therapist, like, didn't tell me what to do.
- 17:10Like, she would just ask questions.
- 17:12And then I would get to the answers myself.
- 17:14And it was like, wow, I can't believe that this is like, this
- 17:16is so helpful. He doesn't need or he didn't
- 17:19need any more therapy. He said.
- 17:20After a few weeks, I felt like, OK, I got everything I needed
- 17:22out of this. But like, therapy now I know
- 17:24it's like a safe space for me. I can always go back.
- 17:26And I thought to myself, Chad, I fear you need to still be in
- 17:30therapy. But OK, who am I to judge his
- 17:33healing journey? He also says his whole family
- 17:35has moved on. I don't know about that one.
- 17:39I'm not, I'm, I'm not, I just I don't, I don't believe that.
- 17:46I don't believe that. I it's just it just this all
- 17:51just happened. I found that really shocking,
- 17:54but I also found it like almost like so inspiring, like he was
- 17:58so strong. I was literally like, this is
- 18:00God's strongest soldier. Like what the fuck?
- 18:03I was in awe. Oh my God.
- 18:05And he also said that when his mom started getting cancelled
- 18:10and people started like making videos about a passengers and
- 18:14what was going on there, they were losing subscribers.
- 18:16He was like, I was literally worried about our money.
- 18:20Like my first thought was not like, Oh my God, I'm so
- 18:23concerned for my myself, my siblings, my family, I he was
- 18:27like, I was concerned about the money that we were going to be
- 18:30losing. And he said he doesn't have
- 18:31like, any regrets or like, resentment because everything
- 18:34that he's been through has made him stronger.
- 18:37Like, I'm not even kidding you guys.
- 18:39It was kind of a crazy interview.
- 18:41I couldn't believe how like, calm and mature he sounded.
- 18:45So resilient, so strong. He's put up some boundaries with
- 18:49his mother. Like you know what, actually,
- 18:51maybe I take it back. Maybe he did learn everything he
- 18:53needed to in therapy because honestly, listening to him was
- 18:57inspiring. Literally.
- 18:59Anyways, I actually do recommend listening to this interview if
- 19:02you guys haven't already. I thought it was like some good
- 19:05insight into his experience. I know that there's like
- 19:08documentaries, like I know that we've like heard from the family
- 19:11and things like that, but I thought just like a full on like
- 19:14long form, like sit down interview with him, I found very
- 19:18compelling because he was, as he mentions, kind of like this one
- 19:22thing he said in a vlog was like the catalyst to literally
- 19:26everything else blowing up. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 19:29mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 19:31I love you guys. Please rate review and
- 19:33subscribe. We're trying to get to 10,000
- 19:36YouTube subscribers and 1000 Spotify star ratings and there
- 19:39will be a deep dive for you guys tomorrow and then I will talk to
- 19:41you on Monday. OK, bye.
