Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcast.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Special guest in NHL Unscripted, Radko Gutis, former roommate of
- 0:25Speaker 1: Nate Thompson. Jason Demers has stories for days. Cannot wait
- 0:28Speaker 1: to talk to Radko, one of the toughest players in
- 0:31Speaker 1: the league for so many years. And this is honestly
- 0:33Speaker 1: going to be a special episode of NHL Unscripted season previews.
- 0:36Speaker 1: That's right. We're going team by team, in or out,
- 0:40Speaker 1: division by division. It is that time here on NHL Unscripted,
- 0:43Speaker 1: episode number 99. We did it, J.D. The Gretzky episode.
- 0:47Speaker 1: The Gretzky. Wow.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I haven't got fired yet.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Almost there, boys.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm hanging on.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Except, oh, Nate's crushing it last week. We were great.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We did miss Jason. Another test day for you, Nate.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Just hanging on.
- 1:04Speaker 1: We're just calling Nate's episodes The Audition. It's just Nate
- 1:07Speaker 1: just auditioning, just fighting for his life here.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Kids got alligator blood in them.
- 1:12Speaker 1: We missed J.D. last week. He was busy with San
- 1:14Speaker 1: Jose Sharks Media Day. How was Media Day? What's the
- 1:17Speaker 1: vibe like right now, J.D., for this team?
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's amazing.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I think about the Sharks in general. You were there.
- 1:21Speaker 1: You played it.
- 1:22Speaker 2: You know it.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Made that cup final, model organization, fell in hard times.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Now you've got Macklin Celebrini. How excited are people there
- 1:28Speaker 1: right now?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Well, it's the, we're at the, I don't know, I
- 1:32Speaker 2: might've used this last, we're at the yodeler on Price
- 1:35Speaker 2: is Right right now. We're at the top of the,
- 1:37Speaker 2: we're at the top of the staircase and we'll see
- 1:39Speaker 2: if we keep going up or if we go down.
- 1:41Speaker 2: But no, the vibes are high there. It's really the
- 1:45Speaker 2: most exciting I've seen it and heard from there since,
- 1:49Speaker 2: you know, I was there in the 2010s to 16s
- 1:52Speaker 2: when they ended up, you know, going to the finals
- 1:55Speaker 2: and losing ultimately. But, you know, it's just all the
- 1:59Speaker 2: new faces there. You see them all relaxed. Everybody's excited.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Media day is kind of like the best day because
- 2:05Speaker 2: guys are, it's the most calm and loose you'll have
- 2:08Speaker 2: guys all season long because then it ramps up because
- 2:11Speaker 2: the start of training camp happens. So, yeah, so, you know, everybody's,
- 2:16Speaker 2: Understanding these new guys coming in are going to be
- 2:18Speaker 2: huge parts of this franchise. The biggest takeaway from that
- 2:22Speaker 2: was I got to sit down with Mason Marchment. That
- 2:26Speaker 2: was an emotional interview because he was tearing up talking
- 2:31Speaker 2: about coming out of the shark head. His dad passed away,
- 2:35Speaker 2: was a friend of mine, was the first development coach
- 2:38Speaker 2: I had coming to the AHL and was just such
- 2:40Speaker 2: an amazing man. He played for the Sharks, Brian Marchment.
- 2:44Speaker 2: And he wanted to be a Sharks player his whole career.
- 2:47Speaker 2: And he was even talking about, like, he's like, dude,
- 2:50Speaker 2: I used to play, like, mini sticks in the room. Like,
- 2:53Speaker 2: this was, like, years ago. And he's like, I can't
- 2:55Speaker 2: believe I'm back. And he's like, I can't wait to
- 2:57Speaker 2: walk out of the shirt head. He's, like, welling up.
- 2:59Speaker 2: And I was like, this is incredible. I can't wait.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Such a fan of his. He's a great kid. And, yeah,
- 3:06Speaker 2: that was, like, the highlight for me was Mason Marchman. But, yeah, everybody,
- 3:09Speaker 2: I got to talk to Darnell Nurse. He was like, dude,
- 3:11Speaker 2: this is awesome. He's like, it's just. Guys seeing how
- 3:14Speaker 2: great the San Jose franchise is and all the amenities
- 3:17Speaker 2: they have at the practice rink and everything. So it
- 3:19Speaker 2: was good. It was great. A lot of fun.
- 3:21Speaker 1: That's awesome, man. And Nate, for you, you were watching
- 3:23Speaker 1: a little preseason hockey, watching the Tampa game, right?
- 3:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I did.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Watching the Lightning, they had their whole lineup in, really.
- 3:31Speaker 4: I mean, they only had three rookies in the lineup,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I think, at the time. But seeing John Carlson, Mikheyev,
- 3:36Speaker 4: I thought, looks really good with their team. And for
- 3:40Speaker 4: young guys, there's this kid named Sam O'Reilly. I don't
- 3:42Speaker 4: know if you guys heard of him, but he four
- 3:45Speaker 4: Memorial Cup appearances in.
- 3:47Speaker 1: His junior career.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Wins the Memorial Cup last year. But this kid, I
- 3:51Speaker 4: was talking to John Cooper about it just the other day,
- 3:55Speaker 4: just after. They've kind of found their third line player
- 4:00Speaker 4: that they need. He's only 20 years old, but the
- 4:03Speaker 4: way he plays, he's very mature. He was killing penalties
- 4:06Speaker 4: on the power play. Just kind of an all-around player
- 4:09Speaker 4: and one that looks way mature. So I think he's
- 4:13Speaker 4: going to make that team and be kind of an
- 4:15Speaker 4: X factor for that forward lineup because I think they've
- 4:18Speaker 4: been kind of searching for that third line the last
- 4:20Speaker 4: couple of years ever since they won the Cup.
- 4:22Speaker 3: So this Sam O'Reilly kid could be the real deal
- 4:25Speaker 3: for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And it's a good point though.
- 4:28Speaker 3: O'Reilly!
- 4:32Speaker 1: But it is a good point, Judy. Some of these
- 4:33Speaker 1: young players, you just always get accustomed to thinking, oh,
- 4:36Speaker 1: this guy's a game breaker. He's a scorer. He's a
- 4:37Speaker 1: top six player. Sometimes you need a third-line center. If
- 4:40Speaker 1: you can come in there and go, hey, I'm going
- 4:42Speaker 1: to kill penalties. I will be defensively responsible. I will
- 4:45Speaker 1: win face-offs. That has great value for a team like
- 4:47Speaker 1: the Lightning.
- 4:48Speaker 2: If you want to make the NHL as a young guy,
- 4:51Speaker 2: and you are not a first overall pick, and you
- 4:54Speaker 2: are not a guy that just is being brought in
- 4:57Speaker 2: specifically to play the power play, you need to understand
- 5:01Speaker 2: that you need the trust of the coach if you
- 5:03Speaker 2: want to make the NHL. The trust of the coach
- 5:05Speaker 2: is first and foremost important. You know, O'Reilly, just listening
- 5:08Speaker 2: to him reminds me a lot of Colin Graff in
- 5:10Speaker 2: San Jose. He learned to play the penalty kill. It
- 5:12Speaker 2: ended up keeping him in the league, and now he's
- 5:14Speaker 2: a contributing member of that bottom six. He can play
- 5:17Speaker 2: top six. O'Reilly, similar, you find a way to make
- 5:20Speaker 2: the NHL. Again, it's like check your ego out the door.
- 5:23Speaker 2: If you were a PP guy in junior or at
- 5:26Speaker 2: the college level, you ain't going to be a PP
- 5:28Speaker 2: guy in the NHL because there's there's, you know, five,
- 5:31Speaker 2: at least five guys on that team that are better
- 5:33Speaker 2: than you at it initially, unless you're brought in specifically
- 5:36Speaker 2: for that. So I always love hearing stories of guys
- 5:39Speaker 2: coming in and being like, coaches are like, dude, he's
- 5:40Speaker 2: a great PKer. I'm like, I would teach kids that
- 5:43Speaker 2: at any level to learn about the PK, learn how
- 5:46Speaker 2: to be trusted because that's, a coach only puts you
- 5:49Speaker 2: over the boards because he trusts you in certain situations.
- 5:52Speaker 2: He might put you out, if he doesn't trust you,
- 5:54Speaker 2: he's only going to put you out there in the
- 5:56Speaker 2: offensive zone because he's like, I got to protect him
- 5:58Speaker 2: and you're going to get, you know, a shift every
- 6:01Speaker 2: three times and you'll get passed over versus being a
- 6:03Speaker 2: guy that's trusted to go in the D zone, then
- 6:05Speaker 2: you can create offense from there. So it's a little
- 6:07Speaker 2: bit of, it's always fun to hear young guys that,
- 6:10Speaker 2: that figure it out early because I'm like, there's no
- 6:13Speaker 2: shortage of, uh, skill guys, but there is an absolute
- 6:18Speaker 2: need for defensive players because cooch shed it. I mean,
- 6:21Speaker 2: we'll have, we'll Yeah, the league's as stupid as ever.
- 6:25Speaker 2: It was the most honest.
- 6:26Speaker 3: The hockey way.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yeah, the most honest. But, like, it was just, in Cooch,
- 6:31Speaker 2: in so many words, like, it's true, though. Like, it's
- 6:34Speaker 2: an indie sport. The talent level's never been higher, but
- 6:39Speaker 2: the idiocy or the, you know, the dum-dums, the dum-dums
- 6:43Speaker 2: are through the roof. Like, guys don't know how to
- 6:45Speaker 2: play hockey. They're just so good and so fast. So it's, like,
- 6:48Speaker 2: nice to see guys that can, you know, play the game.
- 6:51Speaker 1: That was a hilarious line by Kucherov. Tal, quick thought
- 6:53Speaker 1: on O'Reilly?
- 6:55Speaker 5: O'Reilly is just the latest example of why the Lightning
- 6:58Speaker 5: are the Lightning. They get him from Edmonton for Isaac Howard,
- 7:01Speaker 5: who did not want to be there. And what does
- 7:03Speaker 5: Sam O'Reilly do last season? He wins OHL MVP, OHL
- 7:07Speaker 5: Playoff MVP, and then Memorial Cup MVP. So he's actually,
- 7:10Speaker 5: I just want to mention, he's a player I'm looking
- 7:12Speaker 5: out for, too, because he had a hell of a
- 7:14Speaker 5: season last season in the O.A. Tal's players to watch.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Tal is ahead of me.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I like it.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Tal's players to watch. He's starting a blog on Substack.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Tal's players to watch. TPW. I like it.
- 7:29Speaker 1: TPW coming soon here at NHL Unstricted. Maybe just on
- 7:31Speaker 1: episode 100 we'll unveil that new segment. In the meantime,
- 7:34Speaker 1: we've got some big-time drama, folks. In Winnipeg, three-time Vesta
- 7:37Speaker 1: winner and the U.S. Olympic legend, Connor Hellebuck, suspended by
- 7:40Speaker 1: the team. Doesn't even report to training camp. This comes
- 7:43Speaker 1: after he publicly requested... a trade last month. And in Detroit,
- 7:46Speaker 1: ex-captain Dylan Larkin out of an upper body injury, not
- 7:50Speaker 1: participating in camp after requesting his own trade. And when
- 7:54Speaker 1: asked about his trade request by the media, he refused
- 7:56Speaker 1: to go into detail. So, Nate, which team has the
- 7:59Speaker 1: bigger mess on their hands? Halibut and the Jets or
- 8:02Speaker 1: Larkin and the Red Wings?
- 8:05Speaker 4: I mean, kind of pick your poison here, but for me,
- 8:08Speaker 4: I kind of went on a rant last week about it.
- 8:10Speaker 3: And for me, it's Detroit just because... you know, on top.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Of the Larkin situation, you also have exactly pulling the
- 8:19Speaker 4: big parachute, but on top of that, you don't have
- 8:23Speaker 4: a GM in place name, you know, it's, it's interim, right?
- 8:27Speaker 4: So if I mean, and I can go into that too,
- 8:30Speaker 4: but why not just name Sean Horkoff, the general manager
- 8:34Speaker 4: or Daniel clear or Chris Draper, these guys are all qualified.
- 8:37Speaker 4: They've been around the organization forever. I think the Larkin
- 8:41Speaker 4: situation is one that jumps out for me just because,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you know, you strip the captaincy. There's that part of
- 8:48Speaker 4: it as well. And it's just how do you make
- 8:51Speaker 4: that work going forward? Like he needs to open up
- 8:54Speaker 4: the team situation so they can move them. And it's
- 8:57Speaker 4: just an awkward, awkward situation for the Detroit Red Wings
- 8:59Speaker 4: moving forward. And they're, in my opinion, the best division
- 9:03Speaker 4: in hockey too. So they're already behind the eight ball
- 9:06Speaker 4: as the season's starting right now.
- 9:09Speaker 1: J.D., how do you see it? I mean, Winnipeg's not
- 9:10Speaker 1: much nicer, easier. I mean, now the stories have come out,
- 9:13Speaker 1: as you said, that Connor Halibut's family was being, you know,
- 9:16Speaker 1: was vandalized over his house because his wife doesn't want
- 9:18Speaker 1: to be there, so you get his point. But again,
- 9:20Speaker 1: Sheldon's not going to be forced into a move. This
- 9:22Speaker 1: is messy all around for both these clubs.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, dude, it's tough because it's, I just
- 9:30Speaker 2: have considered Detroit like a failed state, you know, the organization. So, like,
- 9:35Speaker 2: I think that, I think, like, Connor's, The Hellebuck situation
- 9:39Speaker 2: is more intriguing to me because you listen to guys
- 9:41Speaker 2: talk in the media, and some of the guys seem
- 9:43Speaker 2: a little irked by it. Yeah, like, need a rider.
- 9:46Speaker 2: It's like, we don't talk about guys that aren't here. Like,
- 9:48Speaker 2: you know, like, it seems like there's a little bit,
- 9:51Speaker 2: because the truth is always somewhere in the middle. Like,
- 9:53Speaker 2: do I think, you know, I was listening to some pundits, whatever,
- 9:59Speaker 2: talk about that a lot of it's believed to be,
- 10:02Speaker 2: Because when US won gold, Canadian fans were not happy
- 10:06Speaker 2: with the fact that these players went to the White
- 10:09Speaker 2: House and saw Trump and this and that. And I
- 10:12Speaker 2: think it pissed off some guys. And probably they're like,
- 10:15Speaker 2: fuck this, I don't need it. I'll just leave. But
- 10:18Speaker 2: to me, I'm like, do you really like... you know, they,
- 10:24Speaker 2: it's crazy that Canadian fans would have allowed themselves to
- 10:27Speaker 2: not understand that these are kids and like, you're, I
- 10:31Speaker 2: get it. And you're supposed to be held accountable. And, and,
- 10:34Speaker 2: but like, you wouldn't be mad at American player. I'm
- 10:37Speaker 2: not sorry that Canadian players like American teams wouldn't be
- 10:40Speaker 2: mad at a Canadian player, like, you know, going to
- 10:43Speaker 2: see Carney and then, you know, flying on a jet
- 10:46Speaker 2: and then go to parliament and coming back. So it's like,
- 10:50Speaker 2: You got to give these guys a break a little bit,
- 10:53Speaker 2: but at the same point, I'm a proponent of you
- 10:56Speaker 2: sign a contract and you make all these promises to
- 11:00Speaker 2: an organization, and then you're not showing up at camp.
- 11:03Speaker 2: At least be like, listen, go in a shovel day
- 11:05Speaker 2: office room and be like, I fucking can't stand it here.
- 11:08Speaker 2: I hate it. They fucked with my wife. They fucked
- 11:10Speaker 2: with my family. I'm going to play. Find me a
- 11:13Speaker 2: place to be traded. Don't not show up and then
- 11:15Speaker 2: leak it. And same thing with Larkin. You come in,
- 11:18Speaker 2: you get injured. And then the press conference he has
- 11:20Speaker 2: is just awful. Larkin's press conference. It's somewhere in the middle.
- 11:25Speaker 2: I understand you're upset and you want to get out,
- 11:29Speaker 2: and great. But do it... Brady at least kind of
- 11:33Speaker 2: did it the right way, and they found a deal
- 11:35Speaker 2: for him quick. Brady was like, I'm done. I'm sorry.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I liked my time, but it's time to move on.
- 11:41Speaker 2: He probably took it the worst of the three of them.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I just think it's It could have been handled better
- 11:47Speaker 2: on all sides, and now we're, you know, this is
- 11:49Speaker 2: where we are, and this is what usually happens at
- 11:51Speaker 2: the bad breakup. It just gets worse and worse, and
- 11:53Speaker 2: the divorce lawyers come in, and then you're like, oh, fuck,
- 11:55Speaker 2: I'm broke.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's going to be like Marriage Story on Netflix. Great film.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Speaking of politics and hockey, I remember years ago working
- 12:02Speaker 1: with the great, late Barry Melrose and Tim Thomas to
- 12:05Speaker 1: go to the White House to go see Obama, and
- 12:07Speaker 1: I said to Barry, I said, you know, it's Bush League.
- 12:09Speaker 1: The guy doesn't like Obama. He's not going to show up.
- 12:11Speaker 1: I said, who cares if you're a Republican? And Barry
- 12:14Speaker 1: looked at me and he goes, I got news for you.
- 12:15Speaker 1: All these hockey guys are Republicans. But the point being,
- 12:20Speaker 1: who cares who the president is? A lot of these
- 12:23Speaker 1: guys probably don't like Obama, but they're going to go
- 12:25Speaker 1: there anyways. And I said, yeah, it really shouldn't be
- 12:27Speaker 1: that upsetting to people.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Fiscally conservative.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Socially liberal.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Socially liberal.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Fiscally conservative.
- 12:35Speaker 2: That's the great cop-out. It's not black and white. Yeah.
- 12:39Speaker 1: In the meantime, the Columbus crash. Speaking of drama, the
- 12:42Speaker 1: Jackets camp already off to a rough start after a
- 12:44Speaker 1: summer full of speculation that Zach Wierenski might want to
- 12:47Speaker 1: go to Columbus, and he walked it back. Kirill Marchenko
- 12:49Speaker 1: was not exactly committed to the Blue Jackets. He spoke
- 12:51Speaker 1: to me the other day. He evaded questions about his
- 12:54Speaker 1: future with the team and then restricted Frazier out of Fantilli,
- 12:57Speaker 1: who had a nice season last year. He's unsigned, absent
- 13:00Speaker 1: from training camp. This after Captain Boone Jenner and key
- 13:03Speaker 1: winger Mason Marchin both left him for agency this summer.
- 13:06Speaker 1: If that wasn't enough, they got one goal their first
- 13:08Speaker 1: two preseason games. J.D., how challenging is the situation for
- 13:11Speaker 1: GM Don Waddell?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Can I revise my picks in Columbus? Especially, you like
- 13:15Speaker 2: Columbus a lot. I like the point of you like Columbus.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I want to pull this absolute tire fire right now.
- 13:21Speaker 2: What is Bones doing over there? You were believing in Bones. Well,
- 13:26Speaker 2: I thought that rant at the end of the season
- 13:28Speaker 2: might have sparked something, but he pissed off some guys.
- 13:31Speaker 2: And then he came right into camp and was like
- 13:33Speaker 2: telling them they're lucky that they're lucky today that we
- 13:36Speaker 2: didn't have physical testing. Cause he's like, I would have
- 13:38Speaker 2: buried him or something. I saw an article, something that
- 13:40Speaker 2: came out of him, a quote saying some guys didn't
- 13:42Speaker 2: look like they're in shape, but yeah, this is on
- 13:45Speaker 2: the players for sure. Right. You got to come ready,
- 13:48Speaker 2: but I do it. It's like trying to get guys
- 13:52Speaker 2: signed and it's difficult when you wait this long and you,
- 13:56Speaker 2: you don't push it as a GM to get something signed.
- 13:58Speaker 2: And cause now you're at camp and it's just a,
- 14:01Speaker 2: it's a mess on all sides. And, and, It's a
- 14:04Speaker 2: little bit like, you know, the longer you let it fester,
- 14:08Speaker 2: you just got to rip the bandaid off.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I feel like where there's smoke, there's fire usually.
- 14:13Speaker 4: And in Columbus, it just seems like, you know, it
- 14:20Speaker 4: can't be any secret he wants out. I mean, I
- 14:22Speaker 4: don't know how this deal with them in Montreal hasn't
- 14:24Speaker 4: happened yet.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I feel like this has been.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Talked about for a long time. I'll tell you why.
- 14:30Speaker 3: That would be a hell of an addition, though.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Hughes has him by the short and curlies, and he's like,
- 14:33Speaker 2: we'll just wait. He's got his finger up his ass
- 14:39Speaker 2: being like, I'm not going to put two in. I'm
- 14:42Speaker 2: not going to put two in just yet. I'm going
- 14:44Speaker 2: to leave it at one. Can't wait for that moment
- 14:46Speaker 2: once he's just a second digit. Let him know you're there.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And on that note, the awkward but difficult transition to
- 14:54Speaker 2: division previews. Opening night is mere days away. We kick
- 14:58Speaker 2: off our predictions for the season starting with Atlantic Division.
- 15:01Speaker 2: We have to put a timer on this. We don't
- 15:02Speaker 2: want a two-hour NHL unscripted. But Atlantic Division, we're going
- 15:05Speaker 2: in order of how they finished last season.
- 15:07Speaker 1: The Sabres. They lost Bo Byram, Alex Tuck, Jordan Greenway,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Michael Kesselring. They gained Olin Zellweger, Crevier, and Connor Sheery.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Who got knocked out last game. Right.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Nate, Sabres in or out? Go to the playoffs.
- 15:21Speaker 4: I'm going to say they're going to be out this year.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Wow.
- 15:25Speaker 4: I think they're going to take a step back. I
- 15:28Speaker 4: don't think any, if you look at their season last year,
- 15:31Speaker 4: they went on an insane run, insane run. And I
- 15:35Speaker 4: don't know with the addition of Florida in the conversation,
- 15:40Speaker 4: the reboot of Toronto, I just, I don't have them in.
- 15:44Speaker 3: And I think this is going to.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Be, they're going to be out.
- 15:46Speaker 3: I don't want to, I don't want to be too
- 15:47Speaker 3: long winded.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Go ahead, JD.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Speaking of Florida, have we seen Barkov? Yeah. Have we
- 15:54Speaker 2: seen Sasha? Your boy. Sasha looks fucking very good. Yeah,
- 15:59Speaker 2: Buffalo's out. I think Buffalo's out. Maybe Ruff gets fired
- 16:02Speaker 2: halfway through the year.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Holy shit. You guys are dropping haymakers. Wow.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Unless they get Hellebuck and they make a huge-ass swing,
- 16:11Speaker 2: which I've heard they were running for it, but they
- 16:14Speaker 2: need to make a move. Maybe they bring in Larkin.
- 16:18Speaker 2: who knows at this point, but yeah, I think they're out.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I think everybody, yeah, and we'll continue.
- 16:23Speaker 1: All right, Tampa Bay Lightning. They lost Darren Radish, goes
- 16:26Speaker 1: to the Maple Leafs, Nick Paul, Corey Perry, Oliver Bjorkstrand.
- 16:29Speaker 1: They gained John Carlson, Micaiah, VL, and Dennis Hildeby. JD, Lightning,
- 16:34Speaker 1: in the playoffs or out? Lightning are going to make it.
- 16:37Speaker 2: They're back. Vassie, one more ride at it. One more
- 16:40Speaker 2: kick at the can. Don't know if they win, but
- 16:42Speaker 2: I think young guys coming. I think Dominic James has
- 16:44Speaker 2: a big year. I like that.
- 16:48Speaker 3: I'm going to say they're in, too.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Hedman's back.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Hedman, that's what I was going to say. That's a
- 16:53Speaker 4: big addition, getting him back. We talked about that Sam O'Reilly.
- 16:58Speaker 4: But I agree. I think that this is their kind
- 17:02Speaker 4: of last dance a little bit before.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Things are broken up.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Pointer.
- 17:07Speaker 3: They've had their chances.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Braden Pointer.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Four years out of the first round. It's time to
- 17:12Speaker 4: get past that now.
- 17:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Where are you at, Pointer? Let's go.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Montreal Canadiens. Favorite team of NHL unscripted, yeah. They lost
- 17:20Speaker 1: Brendan Gallagher, Patrick Laine, Joe Valeno. They gained Chris Kreider. Tal,
- 17:24Speaker 1: they're in.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Go do your Habs spiel.
- 17:27Speaker 2: They're in. I think.
- 17:29Speaker 5: I gotta say, I've never seen, like, hockey media so.
- 17:34Speaker 3: hyping up the Canadians like this ever. In my entire life.
- 17:38Speaker 5: There's just Dan Rosen at NHL.com. Have them at the
- 17:42Speaker 5: tip of the top of his list of teams.
- 17:44Speaker 2: That can win the Cup.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I saw that.
- 17:46Speaker 5: I like that they didn't make any big changes, although
- 17:48Speaker 5: there still could be another change coming, but they want
- 17:51Speaker 5: this core to grow together.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I'm excited to see them this season. Should be fun.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, if they bring Marchenko in, depending on what the
- 17:57Speaker 2: return is, but Man, their top power play, five guys
- 18:01Speaker 2: all under $ 10 million, and that power play is absolutely electric.
- 18:05Speaker 2: David Reinbacher seems to be healthy. He's kind of the
- 18:10Speaker 2: X factor on their decor as a young guy. If
- 18:12Speaker 2: he can stay healthy, he's been touted to be their
- 18:17Speaker 2: kind of second coming. And then Dobesh bouncing back, not
- 18:22Speaker 2: bouncing back, but continuing on his year. But they have
- 18:24Speaker 2: three good goalies that can all play at any specific
- 18:26Speaker 2: time with Fowler, Montembeau, so Yeah, I like him. Montreal's in.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Everything you guys said. Go Habs go.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Jeff Gordon did a great job as far as building
- 18:36Speaker 1: that team with a lot of very cap-friendly moves as well.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Locking those guys up at good prices. Boston Bruins. They
- 18:42Speaker 1: lost Victor Harvinson, Julius Korpisal, Andrew Peek. They gained JT Paterka,
- 18:46Speaker 1: Will Borgen, Connor Clifton. Boston Bruins, Nate, in the playoffs
- 18:50Speaker 1: or out?
- 18:51Speaker 4: I'm going to say in. I think that's... With that addition,
- 18:56Speaker 4: especially J.J. Paterka, that one really jumps out at me.
- 18:59Speaker 4: I think that having a guy that can put the
- 19:01Speaker 4: puck in the net on top of Pasta, Geeky, those guys,
- 19:05Speaker 4: Fraser Mitten, hopefully takes another step. And then they got
- 19:10Speaker 4: Jeremy Swayman, who's arguably one of the best goaltenders in
- 19:13Speaker 4: the league. So I think the Bruins are in. And
- 19:16Speaker 4: with the way Marco Sturm coaches and how he got
- 19:19Speaker 4: them to respond last year and kind of overachieve.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Now they've got a better lineup. I think they're in. JD?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be between the Bruins, Sens, and
- 19:30Speaker 2: Leafs in the Atlantic. Who kind of can sneak into
- 19:32Speaker 2: that last? It'll be a wild card spot. This is
- 19:37Speaker 2: my fence. Boston's my fence. Boston's my fence. I want
- 19:40Speaker 2: to lean and say, I want to say nay.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Go out, because you're going to go Sens in.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Am I going Sens in?
- 19:48Speaker 1: You are, you are. Give a little love to the
- 19:50Speaker 1: Canadian audience.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Redemption? Yeah. I'm going to say Bruins miss.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Attaboy. So that dovetails to the Senators. They lose Brady Kachuk.
- 19:58Speaker 2: I want to tell you, it's hard not to take
- 20:00Speaker 2: when you've got Swayman. He's one of the best boys
- 20:02Speaker 2: in the league. Fuck Jay. Pussy.
- 20:08Speaker 1: The Senators lose Brady Kachuk, but they gain Willie Eklund, Burakovsky,
- 20:12Speaker 1: Sam Erickson, Sammy Blah. This is the one, JD. Everyone's
- 20:15Speaker 1: going to go, Ottawa, big step back. They lost Kachuk.
- 20:17Speaker 1: You're going to go, no way. Ottawa's goal of the playoffs, baby.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Wild card team. Let's go.
- 20:21Speaker 2: This is the equivalent of Major League when they had
- 20:27Speaker 2: the cut-up of the owner. It's going to be the
- 20:31Speaker 2: cut-up of Brady Kachuk. Naked Brady Kachuk. And they're going
- 20:34Speaker 2: to keep posting a piece and be like, we want
- 20:36Speaker 2: to make We want to see his pee-pee.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Every time we win, we take a piece off. That's fantastic.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Every time we win, we take a piece off. That
- 20:43Speaker 2: is a piece. That is a brilliant idea. Yes. Willie Eklund, dude.
- 20:49Speaker 2: If I'm them, day one of training camp, I'm calling
- 20:54Speaker 2: the guys in the room and being like, this fucking
- 20:56Speaker 2: guy didn't want to be here. And he's in our division.
- 20:59Speaker 2: You pound him relentlessly every game we play him. I
- 21:04Speaker 2: don't care if we all get beat up by him,
- 21:05Speaker 2: which we probably will. We fight him. They're in.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Ottawa's in. I love it.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Nate?
- 21:14Speaker 3: I'm going to say out.
- 21:15Speaker 7: I'm going to say with the resurgence of Toronto, we'll
- 21:20Speaker 7: get into that, and the Florida Panthers and everyone else
- 21:23Speaker 7: in the division, because I'm going to have five teams
- 21:25Speaker 7: from the Atlantic make the playoffs.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You got five?
- 21:27Speaker 3: Five. I'm going to say the Ottawa Senators are out.
- 21:31Speaker 3: No break, Chuck. It's going to be a big Heartbeat
- 21:34Speaker 3: missing for them.
- 21:36Speaker 1: All right. Red Wings lost Patrick Kane, James Van Riemsdyk,
- 21:38Speaker 1: Cam Talbot. Eventually, Dylan Larkin is going to be gone
- 21:41Speaker 1: as well. David Perron. They gained Victor Arvidsson. Out. Move on.
- 21:47Speaker 1: I like it.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Let's save some time.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Florida lost Bobrovsky. Evan Rodriguez. In.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Next. Let's go. Florida's in.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Good point.
- 21:57Speaker 2: And the Leafs.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Okay. Leafs will be a good one here. Nate just
- 22:01Speaker 1: said he's got the Leafs being in. They lost Joe Wohl. Hildeby, Berube.
- 22:05Speaker 1: They gained Gavin McKenna, Bobrovsky, Radish, Nick Paul, Roslevic. They
- 22:10Speaker 1: got John Chyka, new president Matt Sandin. Nate, you got
- 22:14Speaker 1: the Leafs as a wildcard team.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I do.
- 22:17Speaker 4: I think the Leafs sneak in. I think with a
- 22:19Speaker 4: healthy Austin Matthews this year, a Bobrovsky, Darren Radish, who
- 22:23Speaker 4: I think is going to make their power play so
- 22:25Speaker 4: much better and so much more dangerous. And I love
- 22:30Speaker 4: the bottom six acquisitions, like Sissons and Duhaime, those guys.
- 22:34Speaker 4: I think that they're going to be underrated for them,
- 22:36Speaker 4: and I think that they're going to sneak in. I
- 22:39Speaker 4: think the Leafs are going to be in this year.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Leafs are back, JD. I'm going to say they're in.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I'm sticking with it.
- 22:49Speaker 1: Wow.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Because only if Brandon Tanev, not Brandon Tanev, Chris Tanev
- 22:55Speaker 2: can stay healthy. Chris Sandoff stays healthy. They make it.
- 22:59Speaker 2: If he gets hurt and he's out again, they're in trouble.
- 23:01Speaker 2: I know they lost Domi for indefinitely. He didn't pass
- 23:04Speaker 2: the physical. That one's a little worrisome. I hope he's
- 23:06Speaker 2: all right. But he's a piece, too. But I think
- 23:10Speaker 2: they get in. I think McKenna has a 50-point season,
- 23:15Speaker 2: and Amatz goes and just pounds the puck into the net,
- 23:19Speaker 2: scores 50 again, and they make it in. He drags
- 23:21Speaker 2: them into the playoffs.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Tal, in Emil Andre, we trust. Do you have the
- 23:28Speaker 1: Leafs going to the playoffs?
- 23:31Speaker 2: Ooh, it's tough.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Math-wise, look, five teams from the Atlantic made the playoffs
- 23:35Speaker 5: last season. At least one of them is going to
- 23:37Speaker 5: miss it this year because Florida is going to be
- 23:39Speaker 5: back in. So the question is, how many teams that
- 23:42Speaker 5: missed last season will be in this season? I do
- 23:44Speaker 5: not have the Leafs making it. I think Ottawa will
- 23:47Speaker 5: make it.
- 23:48Speaker 2: I got four from Atlantic, and I got four from
- 23:51Speaker 2: the Metro making it in.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Five and three for me.
- 23:55Speaker 1: All right, we'll find out which teams from the Metro
- 23:57Speaker 1: the guys do believe in, but coming up next, Radko Gudis.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Got stories for days. One of the toughest players in
- 24:03Speaker 1: the league. He'll join us next on NHL Unscripted. Our
- 24:18Speaker 1: next guest was drafted in the third round, 66th overall
- 24:21Speaker 1: by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2010 NHL draft.
- 24:24Speaker 1: He enters this season 211 points and 1,124 penalty minutes
- 24:30Speaker 1: in 885 career games with the Lightning, Flyers, Capitals, Panthers,
- 24:34Speaker 1: and the Ducks. The man, the beard, the legend, Radko Gudis. Radko,
- 24:39Speaker 1: good to see you, man.
- 24:40Speaker 6: Thanks for having me. What a nice introduction.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Absolutely, man. One of our favorites.
- 24:45Speaker 2: That's all he does.
- 24:48Speaker 1: What was the highlight of the summer for you, Radko?
- 24:51Speaker 8: I mean, getting traded here and signing back here, so
- 24:55Speaker 8: the whole family was excited to join the organization that
- 24:58Speaker 8: we were at before, so it's hard not to say
- 25:01Speaker 8: the move back to Florida.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Goody, talk about Florida and where it's come, even from
- 25:06Speaker 2: you kind of saw it get to the almost, you know,
- 25:10Speaker 2: you made it to the Cup Finals, and then now
- 25:12Speaker 2: you come back years later. How does it feel, and
- 25:16Speaker 2: What have you noticed the change in the organization since
- 25:19Speaker 2: you've been there to now?
- 25:21Speaker 6: I mean, I had great years here.
- 25:23Speaker 8: We were building the mentality or the group or the
- 25:28Speaker 8: feel of the playoffs and getting in the playoffs and
- 25:30Speaker 8: understanding what it all takes to win a round. And
- 25:34Speaker 8: since I left, they did that those two years. They
- 25:37Speaker 8: fully won. They were the team to be. They were
- 25:39Speaker 8: the number one team. um, team to look, or they
- 25:42Speaker 8: were the juggernauts of the whole, uh, league. So, um,
- 25:45Speaker 8: joining them here back, it feels almost unreal. They're all, um, champions.
- 25:49Speaker 8: They all hold each other to the highest standard and
- 25:52Speaker 8: the work ethic and the, the will of, uh, playing
- 25:55Speaker 8: the game the right way and doing the right things
- 25:57Speaker 8: on the ice all the time. It's something that's in
- 25:59Speaker 8: their DNA right away from the start and it's something
- 26:03Speaker 8: that's really hard to teach, but these guys here have
- 26:07Speaker 8: it or we have it here and it's awesome to
- 26:10Speaker 8: be part of again and seeing the big guys being
- 26:12Speaker 8: the drivers and working the hardest on and on the ice.
- 26:18Speaker 8: Just seeing them mature, seeing them grow as players and
- 26:20Speaker 8: understanding they have to do all this to to win
- 26:24Speaker 8: a series and to win it all. So it's nice
- 26:28Speaker 8: to come here and see all the men working out
- 26:31Speaker 8: and going for the same goal.
- 26:33Speaker 6: So that's been really great.
- 26:35Speaker 8: I would say one of the biggest changes is the
- 26:37Speaker 8: mentality of what it all takes, and I need to
- 26:39Speaker 8: be ready for that.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Goody, JD and I were joking around before the show
- 26:45Speaker 4: and talking about your guys' lineup. You go down the
- 26:48Speaker 4: list and Bennett, Matthew Kachuk.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Brady Kachuk.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Uh, you know, Marshawn, now it's you get, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 4: garnet Hathaway, another one who's gonna, who's gonna lead the charge, uh,
- 27:02Speaker 4: when it comes to agitating every game and stirring it
- 27:05Speaker 4: up because, you know, usually by yourself, but now you
- 27:08Speaker 4: have a, you got.
- 27:09Speaker 2: A fucking pack of hyenas.
- 27:11Speaker 6: You got a good group to support this.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Yes.
- 27:14Speaker 8: I mean, we're all at, uh, that style of hockey,
- 27:18Speaker 8: you know, uh, I think we all enjoy that. We all, uh,
- 27:21Speaker 8: play a physical game, we all play the rough side
- 27:25Speaker 8: and I think everybody's enjoying it.
- 27:26Speaker 6: We know that's the way to play, especially in the playoffs.
- 27:29Speaker 8: You've got to make sure you're on the right side
- 27:31Speaker 8: and you're playing the hard way. Who's going to lead
- 27:35Speaker 8: the charge? Hard to say. I always got chirped by Marshy,
- 27:40Speaker 8: so I would say he would be the biggest talker.
- 27:42Speaker 6: I know Chucky has some great chirps as well.
- 27:45Speaker 8: It's going to be really interesting again to see who's
- 27:47Speaker 8: going to be the biggest, I don't want to say villain,
- 27:49Speaker 8: but who's going to be leading the charge. I mean,
- 27:51Speaker 8: Brady played two games so far and he was throwing
- 27:54Speaker 8: the body around a lot too. So he's a great
- 27:57Speaker 8: guy to pick to lead the charge. I think he's
- 28:01Speaker 8: going to be the most excited out of all of
- 28:02Speaker 8: us joining his brother and playing with Berk.
- 28:05Speaker 6: It's always something to give more.
- 28:08Speaker 8: So I think Brady's going to be a big leader
- 28:12Speaker 8: in this part this year.
- 28:15Speaker 1: No question about it. You had a moment last season, Radko,
- 28:17Speaker 1: at your collision with Austin Matthews, and then two weeks
- 28:19Speaker 1: later you play against Toronto to answer the bell, even
- 28:22Speaker 1: though you weren't fully healthy. What can you tell us
- 28:24Speaker 1: about that decision to play in that game? What was
- 28:26Speaker 1: the response of people around the league?
- 28:29Speaker 8: I mean, it was something I felt like I had
- 28:32Speaker 8: to do. I always like to make my own mistakes. Myself,
- 28:36Speaker 8: I didn't want my teammates to uh, to be targets, uh,
- 28:39Speaker 8: during that game. Um, we did everything with, uh, the
- 28:42Speaker 8: organization to get me ready to play the game and, uh,
- 28:45Speaker 8: to be.
- 28:45Speaker 6: Able to suit up and, um, answer the bell. So
- 28:48Speaker 6: I think I did just that.
- 28:50Speaker 8: I think it's a, it's a code in hockey that you, uh,
- 28:52Speaker 8: you answer for the actions you do yourself. And, um,
- 28:55Speaker 8: I think that was a, that was the right thing
- 28:56Speaker 8: to do as a, in the hockey community. Everybody, um, appreciated, uh,
- 29:01Speaker 8: me stepping in the game and, uh, playing unhealthy and
- 29:03Speaker 8: making sure that, um, I, I answer for, for my
- 29:06Speaker 8: mistakes and, uh, I think it just shows the hockey
- 29:11Speaker 8: mentality of everybody around. I'm pretty sure a lot of
- 29:14Speaker 8: guys in the league would do the same thing and
- 29:17Speaker 8: step in and answer the bell.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because we know you personally, me and Nate,
- 29:23Speaker 2: and anybody that plays with you knows you, and you're
- 29:25Speaker 2: just a family man, such a great guy, and such
- 29:28Speaker 2: a great teammate. If fans only knew, like on other teams,
- 29:33Speaker 2: how great of a guy. I don't think they'd be
- 29:34Speaker 2: as mad, but towing that line of like, you know,
- 29:39Speaker 2: loving that and living in that chaos and be able
- 29:41Speaker 2: to switch it off to be just this like very,
- 29:43Speaker 2: you know, I, i consider you a gentle giant and
- 29:46Speaker 2: and dude i played video games with you and like
- 29:49Speaker 2: hung out and it's like it's just weird to see
- 29:52Speaker 2: the the two sides of you but i think how
- 29:55Speaker 2: are you able to detach from that that kind of
- 29:57Speaker 2: killer instinct to then right after it's like hey it's
- 30:00Speaker 2: it's you're a completely different person off the ice.
- 30:03Speaker 8: I mean, I really enjoy both sides of this. You know,
- 30:10Speaker 8: I'm having a great time with the family. I don't
- 30:12Speaker 8: have to think about hockey as much. There's bigger problems
- 30:16Speaker 8: in my home than hockey. So it usually gives me
- 30:19Speaker 8: the strength not to be able to think about hockey
- 30:22Speaker 8: and then makes my focus more on hockey when I'm
- 30:25Speaker 8: around hockey.
- 30:25Speaker 6: So I think that kind of.
- 30:28Speaker 8: gives me the edge of being able to fully think
- 30:31Speaker 8: hockey at this moment.
- 30:33Speaker 6: And it's a role I'm playing on the team.
- 30:35Speaker 8: I think it's an important part of hockey to have
- 30:39Speaker 8: guys like that to play physical and not making the
- 30:42Speaker 8: opponent's life easy, you know, in front of our net. Obviously,
- 30:46Speaker 8: there's two things I would like to take back and
- 30:49Speaker 8: learn from my own mistakes. I'm not particularly happy with
- 30:52Speaker 8: some of the accidents, but, you know.
- 30:53Speaker 6: I'm playing the... I'm playing it on the line, so
- 30:56Speaker 6: it kind of.
- 30:58Speaker 8: Sometimes accidents happen, which I'm not happy about, but it's
- 31:01Speaker 8: a fast game out there. But I've got to say,
- 31:04Speaker 8: the wife is doing, I think, most of the work
- 31:06Speaker 8: with calming me down before I go home. It really
- 31:10Speaker 8: allows me to think about hockey much when I get home.
- 31:13Speaker 8: Like I said, there's always a bigger problem at home
- 31:15Speaker 8: and it contains a doll or a broken stick or
- 31:18Speaker 8: something going on or a hole in the wall. It's
- 31:21Speaker 8: just quigs when they grow up. My daughter is now
- 31:25Speaker 8: 11 years old, so those issues are... Those issues are
- 31:28Speaker 8: big now, some of them.
- 31:30Speaker 2: When you were breaking sticks, when you were a kid,
- 31:32Speaker 2: who was a mentor for you when you played and
- 31:34Speaker 2: when you started playing hockey that you watched that kind
- 31:37Speaker 2: of maybe got you excited about playing this style of hockey?
- 31:42Speaker 8: I mean, my dad, when I grew up, my dad
- 31:47Speaker 8: played all over in Europe and we always followed him.
- 31:49Speaker 8: I would say since Since a very young age, when
- 31:53Speaker 8: I was one year old, we moved to Finland for
- 31:55Speaker 8: him to play. Two years there and then Sweden, West Germany.
- 31:58Speaker 8: So I grew up at the hockey arenas, different environments.
- 32:02Speaker 8: But the one stable thing for me was always my
- 32:05Speaker 8: dad playing for the home team. So I watched up
- 32:07Speaker 8: growing him or, by the way, grown up watching him.
- 32:12Speaker 8: And then I would say once YouTube came in, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 8: I started Googling the highlights. And, you know, Dion Phaneuf
- 32:20Speaker 8: and Scott Stevens were kind of the two big hitters
- 32:22Speaker 8: at that time on the highlights of YouTube, what I
- 32:24Speaker 8: can get my hands on. So I would say those
- 32:26Speaker 8: two would be the biggest, I don't want to say idols,
- 32:30Speaker 8: but guys I would look at with their highlights. It's
- 32:34Speaker 8: always fun to see the guy underneath you, you know,
- 32:37Speaker 8: not knowing what just hit him. So it's pretty cool.
- 32:40Speaker 8: But that era also has a little bit of different rules.
- 32:42Speaker 8: So you have to adjust, you have to learn. Yeah,
- 32:45Speaker 8: those were the top three guys I would say as...
- 32:48Speaker 8: Those guys I watched growing up. And then, I mean,
- 32:51Speaker 8: Czech Republic, you can't say, you cannot say Jagr.
- 32:53Speaker 6: You know, Jagr's been everywhere. I mean, still is everywhere.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Still everywhere.
- 32:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:58Speaker 8: Still rocking. Still skating around. I still skated with him
- 33:01Speaker 8: this summer, you know. I skated with one of his,
- 33:03Speaker 8: with his team. And he's still out there with his
- 33:06Speaker 8: ankle weights.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Has he still got the ankle weights and the blades?
- 33:10Speaker 6: Oh, yeah. Still that.
- 33:12Speaker 2: To get played in an NHL game with ankle weights
- 33:14Speaker 2: on is crazy to me.
- 33:16Speaker 6: Yeah. It is, absolutely. But hey, still rocking it, still
- 33:19Speaker 6: doing it, so good for him.
- 33:21Speaker 4: Yeah, Goody, I always say, man, I say this as
- 33:24Speaker 4: a compliment, you are the best hazard on the ice. And,
- 33:28Speaker 4: you know, I remember I used to tell you that
- 33:29Speaker 4: all the time back in the day. So, you know,
- 33:33Speaker 4: looking back, you know, on the team you captained with
- 33:35Speaker 4: the Ducks and being there and, you know, seeing what
- 33:38Speaker 4: happened this summer with Leo Carlson, can you tell us
- 33:41Speaker 4: about Leo Carlson from your vantage point and what you
- 33:44Speaker 4: saw behind the scenes?
- 33:46Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, Leo is, I would call him a
- 33:51Speaker 8: talent that doesn't come around that often.
- 33:55Speaker 6: Squig, his vision, his reach, his size.
- 33:58Speaker 8: I mean, the first year he was there, he had
- 34:00Speaker 8: some hip pain and we found out he's still growing.
- 34:03Speaker 6: So he still hasn't reached the peak yet.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Wow, still growing.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:11Speaker 8: He can carry the play. He can do it all.
- 34:14Speaker 8: Some of the things he did at the age of 18, 19,
- 34:16Speaker 8: when I was in his age, I had no dreams
- 34:21Speaker 8: of being this good in the NHL. He's walking guys
- 34:24Speaker 8: in this age. The speed he has, it's incredible to see.
- 34:29Speaker 8: First-line center, I think he's going to be big. big
- 34:33Speaker 8: man in this league in future years. Once he fully
- 34:37Speaker 8: develops into a man, I think he's going to be
- 34:39Speaker 8: a scary guy to play against. I think Anaheim did
- 34:43Speaker 8: a great job with keeping him because he's a piece
- 34:45Speaker 8: that you want to build your team around. I think
- 34:47Speaker 8: it was important for them to have him. He has
- 34:50Speaker 8: that talent. He has that, I would say, he has
- 34:55Speaker 8: that room to grow to be the player everybody paid
- 34:59Speaker 8: him to be. I'm really happy for him. Hockey Since that,
- 35:04Speaker 8: I feel like the hockey world kind of changed, you know,
- 35:06Speaker 8: since this contract. So it's kind of, he's the first
- 35:09Speaker 8: guy to do this, make this step and kind of,
- 35:12Speaker 8: I would say, open for a lot more of these
- 35:15Speaker 8: contracts being handed out lately. So I think he's one
- 35:18Speaker 8: of the first guys to do it. I think as
- 35:19Speaker 8: a hockey world, we, I don't want to say should
- 35:21Speaker 8: tank him, but I know a lot of guys did
- 35:23Speaker 8: because it opened up for them to being able to
- 35:26Speaker 8: get their contracts. So, yeah, he could be called as
- 35:30Speaker 8: one of the first ones to do this.
- 35:32Speaker 6: And, yeah, I.
- 35:34Speaker 8: I don't want to say he doesn't deserve it, but
- 35:36Speaker 8: he's definitely a player that is number one on the team,
- 35:40Speaker 8: and he should deserve all the credit.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Yeah, 18 million a year. He's a rich young man,
- 35:44Speaker 1: no doubt about it. One of our favorite moments from
- 35:46Speaker 1: your first time playing the Panthers is you yelling right
- 35:48Speaker 1: in Joseph Wool's face, Radko, during the 2023 playoffs. What
- 35:52Speaker 1: do you remember about that moment? What was the response
- 35:54Speaker 1: when that photo got out?
- 35:57Speaker 6: I don't think it was... I don't recall a lot
- 35:59Speaker 6: of love from Toronto.
- 36:00Speaker 8: LAUGHTER few fingers when we were leaving the arena uh
- 36:05Speaker 8: my head spinning right after the l2 because all my
- 36:08Speaker 8: blood got out of the out of the head but
- 36:10Speaker 8: uh you know just just a great feeling to win
- 36:12Speaker 8: an overtime being on the ice and the the gold
- 36:15Speaker 8: being poured in overtime i think it's uh it's a
- 36:17Speaker 8: great feeling um don't get many of those so um
- 36:21Speaker 8: yeah you just lose kind of your emotions that's uh
- 36:24Speaker 8: you're pushing for the win you're pushing for everything and
- 36:26Speaker 8: it happens you just let the emotions go uh I
- 36:29Speaker 8: can say it's my favorite picture out of my hockey pictures,
- 36:33Speaker 8: but my daughter does have it on the background of
- 36:35Speaker 8: her iPad right now, so.
- 36:36Speaker 6: It's pretty fun. That's awesome.
- 36:42Speaker 8: I told him sorry right after the game, but the
- 36:44Speaker 8: next day the front page in the newspaper was telling
- 36:48Speaker 8: the story by.
- 36:49Speaker 6: Itself, pretty much.
- 36:51Speaker 2: I mean, that, you know, the beginning of the Rat
- 36:54Speaker 2: franchise a little bit with, you know, that was Chucky's
- 36:58Speaker 2: first year in I mean, you mentioned how he's got
- 37:00Speaker 2: some really good chirps. Do you have any chirps? You
- 37:02Speaker 2: could leave out the guy who's chirping, but what's kind
- 37:05Speaker 2: of one of the funniest chirps you've heard him say
- 37:07Speaker 2: that just everyone on the bench was like, oh, my God.
- 37:13Speaker 8: You're putting me on the spot right now. I'm the
- 37:17Speaker 8: worst at chirping.
- 37:18Speaker 2: That's why I know.
- 37:19Speaker 6: I can't remember.
- 37:25Speaker 8: I'm always laughing, you know, when When I played with
- 37:28Speaker 8: Jens here, I spent half of my time on the
- 37:30Speaker 8: bench laughing at the stuff he's saying to the other teams.
- 37:33Speaker 8: I don't even remember. It's just constant laugh of the
- 37:36Speaker 8: stuff that's happening. He's calling guys plugs. It's perfectly set
- 37:41Speaker 8: up what he says to them. You can't ask me
- 37:43Speaker 8: to repeat it.
- 37:46Speaker 2: He was my D partner. Dude, you make a good
- 37:51Speaker 2: pass and he's yelling, Miami, son! My Amy's son. You're
- 37:54Speaker 2: going up the ice and you're like, is this for real?
- 37:56Speaker 2: I'm in an NHL hockey game. And he's just, it
- 38:00Speaker 2: was a lot of fun playing on the back end
- 38:02Speaker 2: with him. He's a different character now.
- 38:03Speaker 6: We get the hands team. You know, we knock the
- 38:05Speaker 6: puck down and make something nice. Hands team.
- 38:11Speaker 8: Right now from Jackie, I can't remember anything specific right now.
- 38:14Speaker 8: You're putting me on the spot.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I know. Making you blush under that beard.
- 38:19Speaker 6: Moving a little bit, yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Oh, go ahead. No, go ahead, Nate.
- 38:24Speaker 8: Go ahead.
- 38:25Speaker 2: No, no, go ahead, Nate.
- 38:26Speaker 3: Go ahead, Nate.
- 38:30Speaker 2: I got shut down on my question. So I'm out now.
- 38:33Speaker 2: I'm in timeout. I'm in the penalty box.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Goody, I was just in Tampa, you know, not too
- 38:37Speaker 4: long ago. And, you know, looking back again, you know,
- 38:40Speaker 4: you were on that Norfolk team with John Cooper and,
- 38:44Speaker 4: you know, Surprisingly enough, Nikita Kucherov, I played with him
- 38:48Speaker 4: on a line when he was called up, and you
- 38:51Speaker 4: played with him before that.
- 38:52Speaker 2: That's a lie.
- 38:53Speaker 3: I know, look it up, we were on the same line.
- 38:57Speaker 4: Was he somebody, like, right away you were like, all right,
- 39:00Speaker 4: this guy is going to be exactly what he is today.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Did you see it?
- 39:06Speaker 6: I can say I saw what all he can do.
- 39:10Speaker 8: There was something that's like, okay, this guy is a
- 39:12Speaker 8: little different than everybody else, and he sees it a
- 39:14Speaker 8: little differently. But to get to this level, obviously there
- 39:20Speaker 8: are some bigger minds in the organization that saw it.
- 39:22Speaker 8: When he first got called up and he was making plays,
- 39:25Speaker 8: he was like, okay, he belongs here. But right away
- 39:29Speaker 8: from the get-go, I don't think anybody could guess that
- 39:31Speaker 8: he's going to be the franchise leader in points. and
- 39:34Speaker 8: being an MVP, putting up 120 points every night or
- 39:39Speaker 8: every year. There was always something special about him, but
- 39:43Speaker 8: just the way he carried himself to where his work
- 39:47Speaker 8: ethic you know you still hear stories about him going
- 39:50Speaker 8: on the ice all summer and just working on his
- 39:52Speaker 8: passing picking a box off the wall and just spending
- 39:55Speaker 8: hours on the ice every day in the summer it's
- 39:59Speaker 8: something that doesn't come along it's not gifted he worked
- 40:02Speaker 8: on it so you you can see he's or you
- 40:05Speaker 8: know he's working on all the little things that maybe
- 40:07Speaker 8: look uh like luck, but there's no way those things
- 40:11Speaker 8: are luck. He knows exactly where he's putting himself. I
- 40:14Speaker 8: think by him understanding what he all can do and
- 40:16Speaker 8: by his work ethic, he grew into this player that
- 40:19Speaker 8: he is. He always had something, but I think he
- 40:21Speaker 8: worked his bag off just to get himself put in
- 40:24Speaker 8: the situation where he is right now. Yes, he has
- 40:28Speaker 8: a talent, but I also think the hard work there
- 40:31Speaker 8: is inevitable. Anybody who who dated with him in the
- 40:35Speaker 8: summer or anybody who played with him knows that it's
- 40:37Speaker 8: not just talent.
- 40:38Speaker 6: It's, it's, it's hard work.
- 40:39Speaker 8: It just doesn't, maybe it doesn't show because he plays
- 40:42Speaker 8: so casually, you know, but, uh, it's, it's behind him there. So, um,
- 40:46Speaker 8: their work ethic has to be there. So I'm, I
- 40:48Speaker 8: gotta say, um, I don't think I can be a
- 40:51Speaker 8: pretty good hockey scout.
- 40:52Speaker 6: After this, eh?
- 40:54Speaker 2: It's a pretty good scouting report. No, I wanted to
- 40:57Speaker 2: ask you actually following up on that scouting report, which
- 41:00Speaker 2: was beautifully done by Kucherov. He's casual, but good. It's,
- 41:04Speaker 2: That's it. That's all you need. Casual.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Okay.
- 41:06Speaker 2: But do you hear his comments the other day? I
- 41:08Speaker 2: kind of liked it when he was like, Hey, the leagues,
- 41:11Speaker 2: you know, never been more talented and fast, but it's
- 41:13Speaker 2: a little dumber. And in the way that cooch speaks,
- 41:15Speaker 2: it's kind of funny. He's just so blunt. Do you
- 41:17Speaker 2: kind of agree? Do you kind of agree? Like where
- 41:19Speaker 2: the league's gone of not, you know, as eloquently as
- 41:22Speaker 2: he put it, but you know, that it is so
- 41:25Speaker 2: fast and talented, but maybe the IQs went down a
- 41:27Speaker 2: little bit. Do you feel that as a defenseman?
- 41:30Speaker 6: Definitely.
- 41:31Speaker 8: A lot more of the pucks are getting dumped, I
- 41:34Speaker 8: would say. There's maybe less creativity. But on the other hand,
- 41:39Speaker 8: everybody's getting... I don't want to say we're getting ready
- 41:42Speaker 8: for the playoffs, but the playoff hockey is a lot
- 41:43Speaker 8: less creative than it is in the regular season. You
- 41:48Speaker 8: get some of the teams wanting to play playoff-style hockey
- 41:50Speaker 8: right away. They're putting the campuses on it. That could
- 41:53Speaker 8: make it a little less likable for the eye, but it's...
- 41:58Speaker 8: It makes more sense in certain situations. We made fun
- 42:01Speaker 8: of it here, of his comments, of his Russian accent.
- 42:05Speaker 6: How dumb it is.
- 42:09Speaker 8: We do have a couple of Russians too, so it's
- 42:10Speaker 8: pretty cool to hear them speak on this base. I agree,
- 42:18Speaker 8: the hockey league is getting a lot quicker. Guys are younger,
- 42:21Speaker 8: guys are faster, they're more skilled. But they don't know
- 42:25Speaker 8: how to kick in a soccer ball anymore. maybe a
- 42:29Speaker 8: little more one-dimension in the hockey world, but the hockey
- 42:32Speaker 8: world's getting better. But then you pass the soccer ball
- 42:34Speaker 8: to them, and they can't kick it back to you.
- 42:36Speaker 8: So it's an interesting environment right now, the way it's turning.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Last one for you, Radko. You're on the, listen, Mount
- 42:43Speaker 1: Rushmore of the greatest beards in hockey history. I think
- 42:45Speaker 1: of Ray Bork with the avalanche. I think of Joe Thornton, J.D.
- 42:48Speaker 1: 's former teammate. I want to ask you, when's the
- 42:50Speaker 1: last time you were clean-shaven? You remind me of that
- 42:52Speaker 1: buddy you have in high school. He's had a beard
- 42:54Speaker 1: since he was 16. I can't imagine you clean-shaven. When
- 42:56Speaker 1: was the last time?
- 42:58Speaker 6: That's been years now. It's been years.
- 43:04Speaker 8: When I do trim it down, I usually keep the
- 43:06Speaker 8: mustache or something, at least to have something, which is
- 43:09Speaker 8: not the favorite at home, but the kids love it
- 43:12Speaker 8: when I do something like this. You have to trim
- 43:14Speaker 8: it down a little bit, but I can't say I...
- 43:19Speaker 8: I can say I own a razor that is for
- 43:22Speaker 8: my face, you know?
- 43:25Speaker 1: I think if you were totally clean-shaven, your kids would
- 43:27Speaker 1: be scared of you. They wouldn't be able to recognize that.
- 43:30Speaker 8: I do recall, I think I played in Washington since 2019, Christmas.
- 43:35Speaker 8: I didn't shave it, but I trimmed it to very small,
- 43:39Speaker 8: I would say maybe a quarter of an inch, and
- 43:42Speaker 8: I'm walking down the stairs on Christmas Day, and my
- 43:45Speaker 8: boy is three and a half years old, and he's like,
- 43:48Speaker 8: watching TV, and then he turns towards me, and you
- 43:51Speaker 8: can see.
- 43:51Speaker 6: The scare in his face, like, ooh, man, walking out of.
- 43:54Speaker 8: Mom, mom, like, who is this, you know, start talking,
- 43:59Speaker 8: he's like, okay, the initial face.
- 44:02Speaker 6: Is like, who is, like, wow, what is this, who
- 44:04Speaker 6: is this, like, that was, I.
- 44:06Speaker 8: Remember that, but now when I go, like, when I
- 44:09Speaker 8: go trim, when I, when we go in the playoffs,
- 44:11Speaker 8: and it's big, and I go trim it at home,
- 44:12Speaker 8: and I'll make sure the kids are with me or
- 44:15Speaker 8: all around me see like how much beard you can
- 44:17Speaker 8: take off and you can take off cheeks that it
- 44:19Speaker 8: actually somewhere underneath there there's a face but yeah it's
- 44:24Speaker 8: been years.
- 44:25Speaker 2: God I'd love I'd love to see you play for
- 44:27Speaker 2: Lula Amorello yeah I was thinking.
- 44:29Speaker 8: The same thing that's why I didn't get drafted earlier
- 44:33Speaker 8: that's why you knew I was shaving it's great so
- 44:36Speaker 8: he's like yeah there's no way we're getting this guy.
- 44:38Speaker 1: I could just see the kids being scared that quarter
- 44:40Speaker 1: inch dad dad it's a new look dad now watch
- 44:43Speaker 1: out be scared Radko, this is great, man. You've been
- 44:45Speaker 1: a terrific player for a long time. Certainly one of
- 44:47Speaker 1: the most entertaining players in the game. A great heavy
- 44:49Speaker 1: hitter and a great teammate. Have an awesome season with the.
- 44:51Speaker 2: Panthers, man.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Can't thank you enough.
- 44:54Speaker 6: Thanks, guys. Thanks for having me. That was fun.
- 45:04Speaker 1: All right, we continue right now. We'll get into our
- 45:06Speaker 1: Metro Division preview. Once again, thanks to Radka Gudis. But
- 45:08Speaker 1: a cinephile in 60, Tal had reviewed I Swear on Netflix.
- 45:12Speaker 1: So I said I'm going to have to watch this.
- 45:14Speaker 1: And as he said, it's a genuinely heartwarming story about
- 45:16Speaker 1: a guy with Tourette's. But as he even points out
- 45:19Speaker 1: in the movie, a lot of things that I say
- 45:20Speaker 1: are quite funny. He cannot control these compulsions in which
- 45:23Speaker 1: to swear and insult people. And how about the fact
- 45:26Speaker 1: the scene, the one scene Tal, he's trying to get
- 45:28Speaker 1: a job as a janitor essentially. And he makes a
- 45:31Speaker 1: cup of tea for the guy. And the guy says,
- 45:32Speaker 1: I got to tell you, this is the best tea
- 45:33Speaker 1: I've had. And his response is, I use spunk for milk.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Later on, he's getting a warp. The queen, he says,
- 45:40Speaker 1: fuck the queen. Later on, he's going to deal drugs
- 45:44Speaker 1: for a little bit of extra money on the side.
- 45:45Speaker 1: And the cops stop him. And the first of the cops,
- 45:47Speaker 1: you've been taking illegal substances. There's nothing like that. He goes,
- 45:49Speaker 1: I've got drugs up my jumper. I've got Tourette's. I
- 45:52Speaker 1: can't help what I say. He goes, is that right?
- 45:53Speaker 1: Let me see your hands. I've got drugs up my jumper.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Crack cocaine, you cunt. Half-price heroin right here. He goes,
- 45:58Speaker 1: that's enough. They go, well, fuck off. You're a cunt.
- 46:00Speaker 1: You're a cunt. You're a cunt. This movie is one
- 46:02Speaker 1: of the funnier movies I've seen in a long time. Again,
- 46:04Speaker 1: and it balances the fact that it's genuinely heartwarming and
- 46:07Speaker 1: a terrible condition, but also one that can't make you laugh.
- 46:09Speaker 1: How about he gets locked in a car with another
- 46:11Speaker 1: girl that has Tourette's, and they both scream all these compulsions,
- 46:15Speaker 1: all this stuff that they just cannot wait to get
- 46:16Speaker 1: rid of, and then it's so cathartic for them afterwards.
- 46:18Speaker 1: A great, great scene.
- 46:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I feel like we've been playing Tourette's
- 46:23Speaker 5: for laughs for a very long time.
- 46:25Speaker 3: And they do that in this film, definitely.
- 46:27Speaker 5: But this is the first time I think this is
- 46:29Speaker 5: the first time we see a film try to help
- 46:32Speaker 5: us understand what Tourette's is, how it works. And then,
- 46:35Speaker 5: like you said, he eventually becomes kind of an advocate
- 46:39Speaker 5: for Tourette's and starts helping other people with the condition.
- 46:41Speaker 3: And it's it's wild. To see a room full of
- 46:44Speaker 3: people with Tourette's.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Just going off. Oh, just fucking giving it?
- 46:48Speaker 1: Just everything they want to say. It's like Larry David,
- 46:50Speaker 1: just getting everything out.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Do you think people will jump on this now that
- 47:00Speaker 2: it's kind of becoming more fashionable and people just pretend
- 47:05Speaker 2: to have Tourette's?
- 47:08Speaker 1: You think that people are just.
- 47:09Speaker 3: Well, Tourette's is having a moment.
- 47:10Speaker 2: We were talking about that before. Because, I mean, you
- 47:12Speaker 2: can say anything you want, and I can say, I
- 47:14Speaker 2: have Tourette's. I have Tourette's.
- 47:16Speaker 6: Right.
- 47:16Speaker 2: And then, like, I can't control what I say. But
- 47:18Speaker 2: you have to keep up.
- 47:18Speaker 1: The facade all the time.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Like, if one thing you do.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I know.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Yeah, every.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Dude, DeMers is cursing, and every 30 minutes, he's just
- 47:24Speaker 1: ripping people. Nate, you asshole. Burke, you fuck. Like, hey, Jay,
- 47:27Speaker 1: you don't have to say that. Sorry, I have Tourette's.
- 47:28Speaker 2: I can't.
- 47:29Speaker 1: Burke, you suck.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Jay, please.
- 47:32Speaker 2: I'd say more than that if I... I'd say more
- 47:34Speaker 2: than that about you.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Also, J.D. wasn't here for last week's Emmy Awards. I
- 47:38Speaker 1: wanted to say this. Michael J. Fox gets the Career
- 47:40Speaker 1: Achievement Award. Bob Hope Mediterranean Award was great. Ray Sehorne wins,
- 47:43Speaker 1: which was awesome. Great to see. Your thoughts on any
- 47:46Speaker 1: of the awards shows? I know you're not an awards
- 47:47Speaker 1: show guy, and you like to make fun of the
- 47:49Speaker 1: awards themselves, but Mariska Hargitay had a moment. Her and
- 47:51Speaker 1: Jalen Brunson, they're together. The big news, Widow's Bay, which
- 47:54Speaker 1: is a rare show. I don't know if you and
- 47:56Speaker 1: Jill have seen it. A horror comedy just dominated the
- 47:59Speaker 1: Emmy Awards. Did fantastic. Your boy, Matthew Rhys.
- 48:01Speaker 2: I just love because Jill did an episode of Law &
- 48:05Speaker 2: Order with Mariska Argote.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Nice.
- 48:08Speaker 2: And a little subtle name drop there, my wife. No,
- 48:12Speaker 2: I like it. But I love that Mariska Argote is
- 48:15Speaker 2: there with all these powerhouse people.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:17Speaker 2: And a lot of people, probably the normal person if
- 48:20Speaker 2: you showed her would be like, who's that? And it's
- 48:22Speaker 2: like the richest person in Hollywood. And she's been doing
- 48:25Speaker 2: Law & Order forever. It's crazy.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Like, 28 seasons of Law & Order. Don't you wake
- 48:30Speaker 1: up one day and go, I want to do something
- 48:31Speaker 1: else with my life.
- 48:32Speaker 2: Well, she's making, like, $ 10 million a year.
- 48:36Speaker 8: Right.
- 48:36Speaker 2: It's, like, crazy. Yeah, you just can't walk away. And
- 48:39Speaker 2: it's the biggest machine of, like, show up. It's just,
- 48:44Speaker 2: you know, what's the story today? And it's, like, they
- 48:48Speaker 2: just fucking plug and play. Like, they're robots. But, like,
- 48:52Speaker 2: it just works. People love it.
- 48:54Speaker 5: I was just going to say, I love that Ice-T,
- 48:56Speaker 5: someone who made a record called Cop Killer, has spent
- 48:58Speaker 5: the last 30 years.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Playing a cop. That's a great one. Look at you.
- 49:03Speaker 1: The guy at the mashroom, of course, is Dick Wolf.
- 49:07Speaker 1: If you think his name is funny, his real name
- 49:08Speaker 1: is Richard Penis. Emmy Awards in general. Good stuff from
- 49:16Speaker 1: Law & Order. Any movies from you, J.D.? Any shows?
- 49:18Speaker 1: Anything you want to pop up?
- 49:20Speaker 2: I haven't seen anything recently. We've been kind of in it.
- 49:23Speaker 2: I've been watching... I think I mentioned it four or
- 49:26Speaker 2: five episodes ago. I've been watching Lanterns.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Yes, that's right.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Green Lantern. Really good show. And then we finished, we
- 49:32Speaker 2: re-watched Succession, so we finished it.
- 49:34Speaker 1: Oh, that's right.
- 49:34Speaker 2: Tom Wombscan wins.
- 49:36Speaker 1: Tom Wombscan.
- 49:37Speaker 2: Fucking love it. What a turn of events that was.
- 49:42Speaker 1: Underestimating that hick from the Midwest.
- 49:44Speaker 2: He was fantastic. Hey, you got to break a few.
- 49:47Speaker 2: What is it? Break a few Greggs to make a Tomlet.
- 49:51Speaker 2: I just knew it.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Wouldn't be Kendall. I mean, I love Jeremy Strong, but
- 49:54Speaker 1: Kendall is just way too emotional.
- 49:56Speaker 2: You know, at the end, you kind of hope for it.
- 49:58Speaker 2: You're hoping the three of them get together, and you're like, oh,
- 50:01Speaker 2: they can't get out of their own way. No.
- 50:04Speaker 1: One of the best lines of the show when he said,
- 50:05Speaker 1: you are not serious people. That's a great line by
- 50:07Speaker 1: Logan Roy. That is a good summation of his own children.
- 50:10Speaker 1: All right, we go back to season previews. The Metropolitan Division,
- 50:13Speaker 1: how they finished last season. The Hurricanes, they lost Freddie Anderson,
- 50:17Speaker 1: Mike Riley, potentially Nikitian, who is still unsigned. They gained nobody. But, Nate,
- 50:21Speaker 1: this team is still going to be in the playoffs.
- 50:22Speaker 1: They won the Stanley Cup a year ago.
- 50:24Speaker 3: They're in.
- 50:26Speaker 4: I think if there's a team just like previous years
- 50:28Speaker 4: of the Florida Panthers that could repeat, Carolina Hurricanes could
- 50:32Speaker 4: do that. I was skeptical for a long time, and
- 50:35Speaker 4: they made me a believer after last season.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got to take him to go in as well.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Just got to say, Debussy. Brendan Debussy. I like Debussy.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Hellebuck's kind of in. Hellebuck's been clipping the tires around him.
- 50:51Speaker 2: I know Nikitian wants out, so He's eventually going to
- 50:55Speaker 2: get traded, and I think he's a guy that could
- 50:57Speaker 2: garner some interest. But I think they make it in.
- 51:01Speaker 2: I don't think it's as clear-cut as last year, though.
- 51:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Penguins. They're going to be out. They lost Anthony Mantha,
- 51:07Speaker 1: Ryan Shea, Nolichari. They gained Kuzmenko, Nick Robertson, Trevor Van Riemsdyk. But, J.D.,
- 51:12Speaker 1: they were a feel-good story a season ago. Big Dick
- 51:15Speaker 1: Dan Mews as you christened him. Now people are on
- 51:17Speaker 1: to them. They haven't improved significantly. They still have an
- 51:19Speaker 1: aging roster. They're out.
- 51:22Speaker 2: I got to think they're out. I know, you know,
- 51:25Speaker 2: they have that huge shining of Koivunen, who's the big piece.
- 51:31Speaker 2: But I just think on the back end, they're a
- 51:32Speaker 2: little weak. I just, you know, I just think they
- 51:35Speaker 2: don't have enough on the back end. You know, they
- 51:38Speaker 2: got Trevor Van Riemsdyk, Letang, it's like their top pair.
- 51:41Speaker 2: And then they got, what did they run? Declan Carlisle.
- 51:44Speaker 2: They got Gerard, Korczak. I just, I don't know if
- 51:49Speaker 2: they have enough and if they're going to be able
- 51:50Speaker 2: to run with that goaltender. the whole way. So with, uh,
- 51:53Speaker 2: she lofts is their starter, right?
- 51:55Speaker 1: Your boy, former teammate.
- 51:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:57Speaker 2: I just don't know. So to me, I think they,
- 51:59Speaker 2: they miss Nate. I agree.
- 52:02Speaker 4: I think that last year was a bit of a, uh,
- 52:05Speaker 4: outlier for them, uh, with, with how everything went down.
- 52:08Speaker 3: But I think just the, the depth of the Eastern
- 52:11Speaker 3: conference too.
- 52:11Speaker 4: I mean, they might be, who knows on the outside
- 52:14Speaker 4: looking in maybe close to making it, but I don't
- 52:17Speaker 4: think they squeak in just with, um, just with how
- 52:20Speaker 4: competitive Eastern Conference is, I think there's a lot of
- 52:22Speaker 4: other teams just better than them.
- 52:24Speaker 1: That brings us to the Philadelphia Flyers. I know JD
- 52:26Speaker 1: has them out. Nate, they lost Garnett Hathaway, Emile Andre,
- 52:30Speaker 1: Samuel Anderson, Rodrigo Abuls, almost gained Leo Carlson, but they
- 52:33Speaker 1: didn't have Joe Wohl, Nolan Chari, exactly, fan of the show,
- 52:36Speaker 1: Nolan Chari, Simone Benoit. Flyers, good young core. Porter Martone
- 52:40Speaker 1: takes a big step in the playoffs or not?
- 52:42Speaker 3: They're out. I'm sorry.
- 52:44Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Flyers, but I just think, you know, you
- 52:47Speaker 4: look at their center depth and with all due respect
- 52:50Speaker 4: and lack thereof. And I love that Danny Breer went
- 52:53Speaker 4: out and tried to get Leo Carlson, but I think
- 52:55Speaker 4: they're going in the right direction.
- 52:57Speaker 3: They are.
- 52:58Speaker 4: And I like some of the additions. But I think
- 53:01Speaker 4: in the end, just like I said before, with the
- 53:04Speaker 4: rest of the Eastern Conference and some other teams we're
- 53:05Speaker 4: going to be talking about, I don't think they get in.
- 53:07Speaker 1: You said last year, JD, without Dan Vladar, there's not
- 53:10Speaker 1: been a playoff team. So if Vladar maybe falls a
- 53:12Speaker 1: little bit, there's just not enough to overcome.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Yeah, they got Joseph Wall and Vladar's hurt right now.
- 53:16Speaker 2: He's got hurt in the preseason game. Uh, so Joseph
- 53:21Speaker 2: wools in there, they do have a backup, a better backup,
- 53:23Speaker 2: I think than last year. Can he stay healthy? I
- 53:26Speaker 2: just don't know if they can do it again. I think, um,
- 53:29Speaker 2: I think the way they played winning in shootout and overtime,
- 53:32Speaker 2: and they're one of the biggest teams that were, you know,
- 53:35Speaker 2: overtime or they were shootout merchants. Right. I don't know
- 53:38Speaker 2: if they can do that again, so I think they miss.
- 53:41Speaker 2: I think this Eastern Conference got better, and I think
- 53:43Speaker 2: they kind of stayed just the same, and I think
- 53:45Speaker 2: they're just going to be on the outside. I think
- 53:47Speaker 2: it's going to be a battle in the East like
- 53:49Speaker 2: it always is, but I think Philly hits a couple snags,
- 53:52Speaker 2: and they hit a couple bumps in the road. They
- 53:55Speaker 2: didn't really have a ton of adversity last year. I
- 53:57Speaker 2: think they get some this year, and they miss.
- 53:59Speaker 1: All right, Capitals are in. They lost Connor McMichael, Trevor
- 54:02Speaker 1: Van Riemsdijk.
- 54:03Speaker 2: Are they ever?
- 54:04Speaker 1: No, they got Kairou, they got Tuck, they got Boone Jenner. Exactly.
- 54:07Speaker 1: They're going to win the division. How about that, JD?
- 54:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, they're winning the division. Yeah, so it's a lock. Nate?
- 54:13Speaker 2: They're in.
- 54:15Speaker 3: I think, yeah, all their additions, I mean, you said it.
- 54:17Speaker 4: I mean, those guys, and then on top of, you know,
- 54:20Speaker 4: Ovi being Ovi again, I think he still gets 30,
- 54:23Speaker 4: and they're in.
- 54:24Speaker 3: And like JD said, I think this team could win
- 54:26Speaker 3: the Cup for sure.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Blue Jackets we discussed earlier, so I don't want to
- 54:30Speaker 1: waste time on that. They're out, right?
- 54:31Speaker 2: We agree on that? I'm off of them now, for
- 54:33Speaker 2: fuck's sakes. Figure it out over there.
- 54:36Speaker 1: All right, I want to hear your guys' thoughts on
- 54:38Speaker 1: the Islanders, J.D. They lost Anders Lee, David Riddick, Susie.
- 54:41Speaker 1: They gained Michele and Vanacek. Another year of Matthew Schaefer.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Islanders missed the playoffs last season. Are they in or out?
- 54:49Speaker 8: Oof.
- 54:50Speaker 2: This is a tough one. It's between them and the Devils.
- 54:53Speaker 2: I'm saying that they're going to be out. I think
- 54:57Speaker 2: that Romanov... Romanov's going to help. I think, is Sorokin
- 55:01Speaker 2: going to have another, you know, Vazna-like year of just
- 55:05Speaker 2: posting 14 shutouts? I just don't know if they're there yet.
- 55:09Speaker 2: I think they miss, and I'm going to say that
- 55:13Speaker 2: it's by a nose, but I think they miss. Nate?
- 55:17Speaker 3: I think they miss, too.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 55:20Speaker 4: I agree with JD. With everything he said, I think
- 55:22Speaker 4: that they're not quite there yet, but they'll be in
- 55:25Speaker 4: the mix, but they're out.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Okay.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Devils, that means, Nate, I'm going to guess you think
- 55:29Speaker 1: they're in. They lost Jacob Marstrom, Simone Nemecz, but they
- 55:32Speaker 1: gained Anthony Mantha, Evan Rodriguez, David Reddick, and a new GM,
- 55:36Speaker 1: Sonny Mehta.
- 55:37Speaker 4: This one was really hard for me, picking between. I
- 55:41Speaker 4: think it was all the New York, New Jersey, other
- 55:45Speaker 4: New York team, but I'm going to have New Jersey in.
- 55:48Speaker 4: And I say that because of what Sonny Mehta's done
- 55:50Speaker 4: so far.
- 55:52Speaker 3: And maybe.
- 55:54Speaker 2: They're.
- 55:54Speaker 4: Also in the mix for Connor Hellebuck. And if they
- 55:57Speaker 4: add that, that really puts them over the hump.
- 56:01Speaker 2: All right, Devils fans.
- 56:02Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 56:03Speaker 2: We're going to do this again. Another fucking year where
- 56:06Speaker 2: we're going to say they're going to fucking make the playoffs.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Yes.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Jack's going to get hurt all year. They're going to
- 56:11Speaker 2: fucking miss.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Now's the time. Ken Danico.
- 56:16Speaker 6: Yes.
- 56:16Speaker 2: Get him back for fuck's sakes. I know the old,
- 56:19Speaker 2: you know, Jake Allen, you know, the old dog. but
- 56:23Speaker 2: I think him holding the net down, I think it's
- 56:26Speaker 2: going to end up being, what is it, Nico Dawes
- 56:28Speaker 2: is going to get the most reps. I think they
- 56:32Speaker 2: want him to kind of take it. I think it's
- 56:34Speaker 2: going to be a goaltending by committee, but I love
- 56:37Speaker 2: the Luke Evangelista pickup. I think it's going to really
- 56:40Speaker 2: help the depth scoring. It's going to help Heischer and
- 56:42Speaker 2: Meyer big time, and I just think that I could see,
- 56:48Speaker 2: you know, I need a breakout year. And I, you know,
- 56:50Speaker 2: I say that candidly, like I need an offensively, an
- 56:53Speaker 2: offensive breakout year from Nico. He sure. I didn't need
- 56:56Speaker 2: to go. He's sure to, to be the, be the
- 56:59Speaker 2: guy for large parts. I know you got Jack, but
- 57:02Speaker 2: I need him to be just an absolute killer on
- 57:04Speaker 2: both sides of the puck and just put some points
- 57:08Speaker 2: up and, uh, him and Timo Meyer. So we'll see,
- 57:11Speaker 2: but that's, I got, I got him in.
- 57:12Speaker 1: I love it. Love the, uh, excitement for the Devils,
- 57:15Speaker 1: and this means the Rangers are definitely out. They lost
- 57:17Speaker 1: Vincent Trojic, Jonathan Quick. They gained Dorofeev, Sean Dursey, Bjorkstrand,
- 57:23Speaker 1: but they've got a ways to go right now, Nate,
- 57:24Speaker 1: this Rangers team. I agree.
- 57:28Speaker 3: I think they are out, but I think they're going
- 57:29Speaker 3: to be a lot better this season. I do.
- 57:31Speaker 4: I think they're going to be close. They're going to
- 57:33Speaker 4: be in the mix. I like the additions they have. Like,
- 57:35Speaker 4: Sean Dursey's really good defenseman. That's a great addition. And
- 57:40Speaker 4: then they got an unbelievable elite goaltender. Like, Shesterkin keeps
- 57:44Speaker 4: them in most games. And I think with some of
- 57:46Speaker 4: their young guys, Gabe Perrault being one of them, I
- 57:52Speaker 4: think he's going to be really, really good this year
- 57:53Speaker 4: for them.
- 57:54Speaker 3: I think they're going to be close.
- 57:56Speaker 2: But they're out. Yeah, I have him pretty tight, actually,
- 58:00Speaker 2: a lot tighter. The more I look at it, and
- 58:02Speaker 2: this Albert Smith's kid is coming up and proving that
- 58:05Speaker 2: he's NHL ready. And their decor is going to be
- 58:09Speaker 2: a little bit better than I think people think. So,
- 58:11Speaker 2: I think they might surprise some people, but ultimately, I
- 58:14Speaker 2: don't think they make it. All right.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Last couple topics here before we say goodbye on NHL Unscripted.
- 58:18Speaker 1: Blue Steel. Dallas taking care of same steel on a four-year,
- 58:22Speaker 1: $ 14. 8 million contract extension, AAV of 3.7, a depth piece
- 58:27Speaker 1: for their forward unit, set career highs last season, 12 goals,
- 58:30Speaker 1: including five game winners, second of the team behind Jason Robertson,
- 58:33Speaker 1: and 33 points. What do you got, J.D., with regards
- 58:36Speaker 1: to steel being locked up by Dallas?
- 58:38Speaker 2: If you want to make it and play in the
- 58:40Speaker 2: NHL and get paid, be responsible. This is a guy
- 58:44Speaker 2: that was an offensive guy coming into the league, and
- 58:46Speaker 2: he plays a little bit of everything for Dallas and
- 58:48Speaker 2: understands that he needs to be trusted. So Sam Steele,
- 58:55Speaker 2: way to go. Love it. Good news there.
- 58:58Speaker 1: And some happy trails we want to pass along here
- 59:00Speaker 1: to Kevin Hayes. Announces retirement after a short stint in
- 59:03Speaker 1: the KHL. He had a nice career. 445 points. The Rangers, Jets, Flyers, Blues,
- 59:08Speaker 1: and Penguins. Nate had that great Boston accent. Clearly a
- 59:12Speaker 1: very well-liked player. You know, the death of his brother.
- 59:14Speaker 1: He talked about his perseverance. I wish the best to
- 59:16Speaker 1: Kevin Hayes.
- 59:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, one of my former teammates when I
- 59:19Speaker 4: played with him in Philly. Just a great guy and
- 59:23Speaker 4: a funny guy. Great personality. Just one of those guys
- 59:27Speaker 4: everyone wants to be around. Everyone loves him. You hear
- 59:31Speaker 4: around the league and how much how well he's liked.
- 59:35Speaker 4: And I think, you know, with everything he's been through too, it's, uh,
- 59:38Speaker 4: it's just a guy you root for. And, and a
- 59:40Speaker 4: guy that, you know, when I played with him, I
- 59:42Speaker 4: didn't realize how good he was offensively, super underrated, great,
- 59:47Speaker 4: great hands that could hold onto the puck like a string.
- 59:49Speaker 3: So, um, had a great career. So congrats, Hazy.
- 59:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:55Speaker 1: His brother, Jimmy Hayes played 334 games. The Blackhawks, Panthers, Bruins,
- 59:59Speaker 1: and Devils died in 2021. So obviously with a heavy heart,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Kevin Hayes continued, but This is a guy, J.D., who
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: was a first-round pick by the Blackhawks. Again, 805 regular
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: season games, retires at 34, 12 seasons.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Pretty good career. Yeah, great human being. Russia gets us all. A.K.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Barr's Kazan.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: I played for Kazan. I think he probably went there
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: and said, fuck this, but I mean, I loved my
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: time in Kazan, and you know, it's demanding over there, too,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: and I think sometimes it catches guys off guard, but listen,
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: I think he had such an amazing career, and Great
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: human being, great player. And for that size, Silky Mitz,
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: I think congrats on retirement and enjoy the golf course
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: like the rest of us.
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Episode 99 in the books. Tal, I give the final
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: word to you. A final Wayne Gretzky story, anecdote. You're
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: our hockey historian. What do you got? For episode 99
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: of Unscripted, your thoughts on the great one.
- 1:00:56Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Putting me on the spot a little bit.
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: I mean, I think people underrate how great he is
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: as a storyteller. I think we know that more now.
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: on Turner, but the story about the Oilers' first trip
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: to the finals when they lost, and then they passed
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: by the Islanders' room, and they were just completely gassed,
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: and that's when they learned that you just need to
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: empty the barrel if you want to win a championship.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: That's such an incredible story. He started telling that story
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: decades ago, and we're still telling that story. Big ups
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: to Waino. Can't wait to see him on Turner again
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: this season. 99 episodes. We're going triple digits next episode, boys.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Yeah, our buddy Paul Bisson has said that as well.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: He goes, Gretzky's a great storyteller. You get him around
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the table, get a few drinks in him as well.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: That always helps, a little liquid courage. He'll get the
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: stories flowing. 50 goals in 39 games to me, amazing.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I mean, 215 points in one season. I know it
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: was a different era of hockey, JD, but some of
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: those 80s numbers from Gretzky were just ridiculous. And the
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: joke was always, he was last in strength and endurance
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: and stuff like that, but on the ice, he was unbelievable.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Yeah, well, goalies don't go down in butterfly. You can really.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: They really take a lot of the net away.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: The genesis of kick, save, and appeal.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Those guys wouldn't go.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: They're just kicking everything.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: His intelligence is what is just ahead of its time
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: and his playmaking ability. I just think he... Him as
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: a competitor, I think, goes... We don't talk about it
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: enough of just how badly he wanted to win and
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: how bad he just willed his teammates and demanded so
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: much and was just so fiercely... So fiercely... Just a
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: top-notch competitor. And listen, he does amazing stuff. He's all
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: over the hockey world, whether he wants to be or
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: he's dragged around. But he loves it. He's in the
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: TNT at Turner. I think he does a great job
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: telling stories. And I love hearing his analysis on the
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: game when he talks about certain players. And he's really
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: interested about certain guys. It always comes out great because,
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: I mean, it's just incredible to listen to that guy talk.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: And Nate, you know in LA, we look at all
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: the hockey down these Sunbelt cities. A lot of that
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: goes to Wayne Gretzky. He was a success with the
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Kings when no one was talking hockey as they joke around.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: Brothers are walking around wearing silver and black 99 jerseys.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Gretzky made hockey cool.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that his influence goes back even for
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: all of us probably when we were young. I don't
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: know if I'm the hockey player I am now without
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: being a Wayne Gretzky fan. I mean, my first ever
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: NHL game live was in Vancouver against the LA Kings
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: in 1994.
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: And he had a goal and assist. I was up
- 1:03:28Speaker 3: in the nosebleed. Papa Buray had a hat trick, but
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: he had a goal and assist.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: And, you know, I had that silver aluminum Gretzky stick
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: like everybody else. And, um, I think that's what it is,
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: you know, what he's done for the sport. And you
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: said it like there is no hockey in Southern California
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: without Wayne Gretzky and him coming to LA Kings.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: So, um, he's a great one for a reason. I
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: don't know, Nate. You going from Ottawa to L.A. is another...
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: That's another moment in Kings history. It was starting to
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: fall through.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: Dion and I.
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: Dion.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: You and Dion. He would double Dion.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: He would double Dion.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Major trades in L.A. Kings history. Don't sleep on Nate
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: making an impact there with the silver and black. Thanks
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: so much for checking in. Thanks for Radka Grus being
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: our special guest in episode 100. Big one coming up
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: next week. Don't you dare miss it. NHL Unscripted is
