- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:12In our first series, Imagining Work, we're looking
- 0:15at a question, what story about work am
- 0:17I living in?
- 0:19Because the story we live in is the
- 0:21story we live out, and not every story
- 0:23about work squares with the story about work
- 0:25that God is telling on the pages of
- 0:27the Bible.
- 0:28So, last time we looked at the TGIF
- 0:31story about work, thank God it's Friday, today
- 0:33we've got another one, Do What You Love,
- 0:36the Do What You Love story about work.
- 0:42So, about five years ago, I worked in
- 0:44the West Loop in downtown Chicago, and on
- 0:46certain days of the week, my team would
- 0:48convene in a co-working office building, and
- 0:50right in the front lobby, there was this
- 0:52sign with beautiful lettering that said, Do What
- 0:54You Love.
- 0:54It was meant to be this hit of
- 0:56inspiration, like, yes, that is why I'm in
- 0:59this city, that is why I'm in this
- 1:00building, that is why I'm in this job,
- 1:02so that I can do what I love,
- 1:04and I'm going to experience joy, and fulfillment,
- 1:06and beauty, and life as I do that.
- 1:09And, of course, it doesn't hurt that there's
- 1:10craft beer on tap on every level of
- 1:12the building.
- 1:13Okay, so this has become a proverb of
- 1:15our age, Do What You Love.
- 1:17It focuses on passion, it focuses on fulfillment,
- 1:19and it gives us this idea that if
- 1:21we can just get it right at work,
- 1:22if we can just get into the right
- 1:24job and take the right approach to it,
- 1:26then we're going to get these longings of
- 1:28our heart fulfilled.
- 1:29And a great cultural spokesperson for this is
- 1:32motivational speaker Tony Robbins.
- 1:34He's been talking about life and work since
- 1:36the 1980s.
- 1:37He still has a following today, and here's
- 1:40something that he said recently in a YouTube
- 1:42video called The Ed, Six Steps to Total
- 1:45Success.
- 1:46Tony says, There are certain patterns that cause
- 1:49people to be fulfilled, to be happy, to
- 1:52fit, to be strong, to feel alive, to
- 1:54be vibrant, to have passion in their life,
- 1:57to do well financially, but even more importantly,
- 1:59emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, in their health and their
- 2:03relationships, success without fulfillment is failure.
- 2:08Okay, that was a lot.
- 2:09But you can see what he's doing here,
- 2:11right?
- 2:11He says, There are certain patterns that cause
- 2:13people to be fulfilled, and Tony wants to
- 2:16help you unlock those patterns so that you
- 2:18can realize that fulfillment.
- 2:20You're going to be successful, but you're not
- 2:22just going to be successful.
- 2:23You're going to experience joy and life.
- 2:27So in this do what you love narrative,
- 2:30what is work?
- 2:31I think it's kind of clear.
- 2:33Work is a dream because we dream about
- 2:36the work that we could have.
- 2:37We dream about that job that's going to
- 2:39realize that fulfillment.
- 2:42And why does this story have the power
- 2:44that it does in our lives?
- 2:46Well, I think it's because it rings true
- 2:47to something inside of us.
- 2:48We have a longing for fulfillment in our
- 2:51work.
- 2:52We say, I want my work to count
- 2:54for something in the world.
- 2:56And we also have a sense that there's
- 2:57something unique to us that matters.
- 3:00And we want that to also be given
- 3:01to the world in some way.
- 3:04And this idea of work as a dream
- 3:06has certainly been part of my life with
- 3:08work and my career.
- 3:09As I shared a little bit in episode
- 3:11zero, I started out with the aspiration to
- 3:14be a pastor in a traditional church role,
- 3:16but life hasn't worked out that way.
- 3:18And so I've had to pivot and figure
- 3:20out, well, what does it mean for me
- 3:21to find fulfillment to these longings if I
- 3:25don't get to do that with that dream
- 3:27being fulfilled?
- 3:29But even if an unfulfilled dream like that
- 3:31isn't part of your story, I bet that
- 3:33you've heard the siren call of the do
- 3:36what you love narrative.
- 3:37It's just so powerful.
- 3:38It's tantalizing, right?
- 3:40Life and joy and fulfillment.
- 3:41It's just over the next hill if you
- 3:43can do what you love.
- 3:46So if that's the story we live in,
- 3:49how do we live the story out?
- 3:52If work is a dream, then we chase
- 3:54that dream.
- 3:56And this is really the existential danger of
- 3:59the do what you love narrative, is that
- 4:01it can cause us to chase and chase
- 4:03and chase and chase and we're cut off
- 4:06from contentment.
- 4:08Just like the TGIF narrative cuts us off
- 4:10from pain, we can't reconcile with our pain.
- 4:14The do what you love narrative cuts us
- 4:16off from contentment.
- 4:17We can't reconcile with the limitations of our
- 4:20circumstances.
- 4:22And so we chase and we chafe.
- 4:24We chafe against the limitations that we face
- 4:27in everyday life.
- 4:30So how do we look at this as
- 4:31disciples of Jesus?
- 4:33Well, I think Jesus invites us into something
- 4:35better.
- 4:36And he invites us into something that honors
- 4:38our longing for fulfillment, but helps us reconcile
- 4:41with contentment and reconcile with the limitations of
- 4:44our circumstances.
- 4:46Jesus can help us put those things together.
- 4:48Okay, so let's start with this idea of
- 4:51contentment.
- 4:52Contentment is a classical Christian virtue.
- 4:54And this is really intention with the do
- 4:56what you love narrative.
- 4:57In many ways, discontentment has become a virtue
- 5:00in our age.
- 5:02You're content with that job, but you could
- 5:04do better.
- 5:05You could have more.
- 5:07And so discontentment is almost encouraged in many
- 5:10ways that we should be more ambitious, that
- 5:11we shouldn't settle.
- 5:13But scripture teaches very clearly as 1st Timothy
- 5:166, 6 says, But godliness with contentment is
- 5:20great gain.
- 5:21In other words, it's a good thing to
- 5:22be content.
- 5:23It's not a bad thing.
- 5:24It's not settling to experience joy even in
- 5:27a job that's not perfect.
- 5:30And so that's what Jesus invites us to,
- 5:32but I just want to give a kind
- 5:34of asterisk here.
- 5:36Sometimes Christians take a left turn here and
- 5:38they get a little bit off the trail
- 5:40and they can have this attitude of, oh,
- 5:43okay, I get it.
- 5:44So I have a deep longing for fulfillment
- 5:46in my work.
- 5:47But what God wants me to be is
- 5:49just content.
- 5:50So I guess I'll just sign off on
- 5:52that long and try and ignore it and
- 5:54grind out my job, whatever it is.
- 5:58And that's what faithfulness means.
- 5:59That's what's going to please God.
- 6:01And occasionally, even a well-intentioned Christian pastor
- 6:04or teacher can reinforce this message in the
- 6:06way they talk about contentment.
- 6:09But I, for one, am not content with
- 6:11that vision of contentment.
- 6:12I think we need a vision of contentment
- 6:15that also integrates our longing for fulfillment because
- 6:18I think that fulfillment, excuse me, that longing
- 6:20for fulfillment comes from God.
- 6:23He wants to work in us and do
- 6:26something beautiful in the world.
- 6:28So the question is, how do we put
- 6:30these things together?
- 6:31How can we experience contentment while we also
- 6:33have this longing for fulfillment?
- 6:36Well, I think that Philippians chapter 2 can
- 6:38really help us.
- 6:39There's just a couple verses that we have
- 6:41time for today.
- 6:42But the whole chapter is helpful.
- 6:44In verse 13, the Apostle Paul writes, for
- 6:47it is God who works in you to
- 6:49will and to act in order to fulfill
- 6:51his good purpose.
- 6:54Okay, let's pause there.
- 6:55There's a lot going on even in that
- 6:56phrase.
- 6:57Okay, so first of all, God is working.
- 6:59Paul is saying that God is at work.
- 7:01It is God who works in you to
- 7:03will and to act.
- 7:05So will has to do with decision-making
- 7:07and acting has to do with what we
- 7:10do, taking action.
- 7:12So whether we're making decisions or we're taking
- 7:14action, God is at work in us.
- 7:16But then what does that action look like?
- 7:18It says in order to fulfill his good
- 7:21purpose.
- 7:23And this is the heart of the matter.
- 7:25And again, it uses that word fulfilled that
- 7:27the fulfillment that scripture promises us is the
- 7:30fulfillment of God's purposes.
- 7:33And that actually does speak to our longing
- 7:35for fulfillment and it speaks to our need
- 7:38for contentment.
- 7:40So let's think about this in a job
- 7:42just for convenience.
- 7:44I'm going to talk about fulfillment 1 and
- 7:46fulfillment 2.
- 7:47So fulfillment 1 doesn't have anything to do
- 7:49with a dream.
- 7:50It's just feeling satisfied at the end of
- 7:53a good workday.
- 7:55And the good news is that we can
- 7:56experience fulfillment 1 in almost any job as
- 8:00long as our job isn't unethical or dehumanizing
- 8:03to the point of complete demoralization.
- 8:05It's possible to get to the end of
- 8:07the workday and feel like I did a
- 8:09good job today and I'm satisfied in that.
- 8:11So that's that's fulfillment 1 and you can
- 8:14see how fulfillment 1 goes hand in hand
- 8:15with contentment.
- 8:16We get to the end of the workday.
- 8:18We breathe that sigh of I did a
- 8:20good job today and we're content.
- 8:22We're grateful for what God has done in
- 8:24our work today, even if it's not particularly
- 8:27aligned with our deepest longings or with our
- 8:30unique spiritual gifts.
- 8:32So that's the first thing I want to
- 8:33say is like that's okay.
- 8:34If you have a job that's not aligned
- 8:36with your deepest longings or your unique spiritual
- 8:39gifts, that doesn't mean you somehow missed the
- 8:41boat in terms of living out your vocation
- 8:45and calling as a Christian.
- 8:47That doesn't mean that you somehow can't experience
- 8:49fulfillment.
- 8:50You can experience fulfillment just by doing your
- 8:52work well and trusting that God is at
- 8:56work.
- 8:58In verse 17 of Philippians 2, we get
- 9:01another little clue that unpacks this.
- 9:02So just a phrase here Paul talks about
- 9:05the sacrifice and service coming from your faith.
- 9:10So sacrifice and service are two ways of
- 9:11talking about what we do.
- 9:14Sacrifice is doing what we do as an
- 9:15offering to the Lord and then service is
- 9:17doing what we do in order to serve
- 9:19and help others and this is talking about
- 9:22the Christian life as a whole, but we
- 9:24can apply it to the context of work
- 9:25and and this comes from our faith is
- 9:29what the verse says.
- 9:30So it's as we're trusting in God that
- 9:34we can do our work as sacrifice.
- 9:36It's as we're trusting in God that we
- 9:39can do our work as service.
- 9:42And so again, God is at work to
- 9:44fulfill his purposes and that's true even if
- 9:47our job doesn't seem particularly spiritually spectacular.
- 9:51We can trust, you know, I'm doing my
- 9:53job and I can trust that God is
- 9:55doing his as I do my everyday work
- 9:57and I can do it as an offering
- 9:58to him.
- 9:59I can do it to serve other people
- 10:01and really that's half the battle in our
- 10:03Christian life when it comes to work is
- 10:05just to do it with that trust that
- 10:07God will bring his purposes to fulfillment.
- 10:10A great example of this in my own
- 10:12life was a cafeteria worker at my college.
- 10:15His name was Simeon and before work each
- 10:18day he would arrive in a full suit
- 10:20even though he would then change into a
- 10:22uniform with an apron a few minutes later
- 10:24and I found out that the reason he
- 10:27did that was because he viewed his work
- 10:29as a way to honor God and a
- 10:31way to honor the students.
- 10:33He realized dignity in that job even though,
- 10:36you know, being a cafeteria worker probably did
- 10:38not realize his deepest longing is in life
- 10:40and probably was not uniquely geared to his
- 10:42spiritual gifts.
- 10:43He still found a way to make his
- 10:46work meaningful by doing it as a sacrifice
- 10:49as service coming from his faith.
- 10:53Okay, so that's fulfillment one.
- 10:56But what about fulfillment two?
- 10:58What about that sense that there's something unique
- 11:00to me that should make a difference in
- 11:02the world?
- 11:04Well, I think that longing is from the
- 11:05Lord too because God has made us unique
- 11:08and he has given us unique spiritual gifts
- 11:10as Scripture teaches.
- 11:12But here's the thing, the fulfillment of what's
- 11:15unique to us may not come primarily in
- 11:18our job and regardless, it's not limited to
- 11:21our job because the main unique thing that
- 11:24you bring to the world is the person
- 11:26you are becoming.
- 11:28And so it's as you love God as
- 11:31you let him do his work in your
- 11:33heart that you become more the human being
- 11:35you were meant to be and then wherever
- 11:37you go, whatever you do, you're bringing something
- 11:40unique that makes a difference in the world,
- 11:43you.
- 11:44And so we don't often realize that sense
- 11:47of fulfillment of that longing for something unique
- 11:50by strategizing for it or by trying to
- 11:53align it in our career.
- 11:54It's not bad to have career goals where
- 11:56we could maybe align things more and more
- 11:58over time if we have that freedom.
- 12:00But we don't trust in those goals.
- 12:02We trust in the Lord.
- 12:03We trust that as we do our work,
- 12:05whatever it is with faithfulness every day, that
- 12:07God is making us into the human being
- 12:10who brings something unique to the world.
- 12:14Christian psychologist and spiritual director David Benner has
- 12:18a wonderful book called The Gift of Being
- 12:19Yourself.
- 12:21And here's his line about fulfillment.
- 12:23He says, paradoxically, our fulfillment lies in the
- 12:27death of our own agendas of fulfillment.
- 12:31Our fulfillment lies in the death of our
- 12:34own agendas of fulfillment.
- 12:37And that's the good news for today.
- 12:39Because that's the good news that Jesus also
- 12:41taught and lived out.
- 12:42As he said, whoever wants to save their
- 12:44life will lose it, but whoever loses their
- 12:47life for my sake will find it.
- 12:50It says we surrender our agendas of fulfillment
- 12:52to the Lord, that we find the life
- 12:54in the Lord we're actually longing for.
- 12:57And Jesus leads us where he has already
- 12:59gone because he's the one that laid down
- 13:02his agenda when he said, not my will,
- 13:05but yours be done before going to the
- 13:07cross.
- 13:09And if Jesus can say that, he can
- 13:11teach us how to lay down our lives
- 13:13and how to be fulfilled as we trust
- 13:16the purposes of God.
- 13:21Jesus, we do trust you.
- 13:23We trust that you are at work in
- 13:25us as we act and as we will
- 13:27to fulfill your good purpose.
- 13:31Do that in us.
- 13:32And as you work in us, let us
- 13:34do our work with you.
- 13:36Amen.
- 13:39Thanks for listening.
