- 0:00Speaker 1: My mom would be at all my sporting events. Let's
- 0:02Speaker 1: say I was playing football, okay? My mother would be
- 0:05Speaker 1: on the sidelines, and if the play on the field
- 0:07Speaker 1: started going one way, my mother would run along like, Mark,
- 0:11Speaker 1: get him, get him! I'd be like, oh my gosh.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'd get in the huddle with the other guys, they'd go, Mark,
- 0:19Speaker 1: is that your mother? I'd go, no, I never saw
- 0:22Speaker 1: her before in my life. The greatest gift my mother
- 0:26Speaker 1: ever gave me, she believed in me. I have overdosed
- 0:30Speaker 1: on drugs on three occasions where I should have been dead.
- 0:34Speaker 1: But I believe I was kept here for a reason.
- 0:37Speaker 1: You show me your friends, I will show you your future.
- 0:40Speaker 1: How do I know this? I hung out with losers
- 0:43Speaker 1: and I became the biggest loser of them all because
- 0:45Speaker 1: I gave up everything I dreamt about as a little
- 0:49Speaker 1: boy because of who I chose to surround myself with.
- 0:53Speaker 1: My friends would drive me home at 2, 3, 4
- 0:55Speaker 1: in the morning. We'd be drunk and high, laughing in
- 0:58Speaker 1: the car. We'd pull up in front of my house
- 1:00Speaker 1: in New York. They'd go, Mark, Mark. The light's on.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'd go, oh, man, my mother's up. See, my mom
- 1:07Speaker 1: wouldn't go to bed until she knew her son was
- 1:08Speaker 1: still alive. I'd walk in. She'd say, hi, Mark. Hi, Mark.
- 1:12Speaker 1: How was your night? I go, it was good, Mom.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I'm just going to go to bed. She goes, can
- 1:15Speaker 1: I talk to you for a minute? I go, Mom,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm tired. I'm just going to go to bed. She goes, Mark,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I haven't seen you all day and all night. Can
- 1:22Speaker 1: I please talk to you? I said, man, just leave
- 1:26Speaker 1: me alone. You bug me. I slammed my bedroom door
- 1:30Speaker 1: on the one person who believed in me. I was
- 1:33Speaker 1: on a worldwide tour when we were wrestling overseas in Japan.
- 1:37Speaker 1: After my wrestling match, I went upstairs to my hotel
- 1:39Speaker 1: room and I fell asleep. there was a knock at
- 1:42Speaker 1: my door at three o'clock in the morning. I got
- 1:44Speaker 1: out of bed and I looked through the safety window
- 1:45Speaker 1: and I could see it was a Japanese promoter. So
- 1:49Speaker 1: I opened the door and he said, Mark, you need
- 1:51Speaker 1: to call home. There's been an emergency. I went and
- 1:54Speaker 1: got in the hotel room phone. I called back to
- 1:55Speaker 1: the United States and said, hey, what's going on? They said, Mark,
- 2:00Speaker 1: I don't know how to tell you this. I said,
- 2:02Speaker 1: just tell me what happened. All of a sudden they
- 2:04Speaker 1: started crying. They go, Mark, I can't tell you. I said,
- 2:08Speaker 1: just say it. He said, Mark, your mother died. I
- 2:17Speaker 1: just threw the phone down. I ran out of my
- 2:20Speaker 1: hotel room. I took the elevator to the lobby. When
- 2:23Speaker 1: the doors opened up, I just ran out into the street.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I mean, there was no cars. There was no people.
- 2:28Speaker 1: It was 3 o'clock in the morning. And I walked
- 2:31Speaker 1: down the middle of a street in Hiroshima, Japan. And
- 2:35Speaker 1: I remember looking up and just saying, Mom, Mom. I
- 2:38Speaker 1: am so sorry. I flew home for her funeral and
- 2:43Speaker 1: I was so nervous to walk up to her casket.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So I just stood way in the back and I
- 2:48Speaker 1: kept looking from a distance. I kept thinking to myself, mom,
- 2:53Speaker 1: please wake up. Please get up. And then I finally
- 2:58Speaker 1: got the nerve to walk up to her. And as
- 3:00Speaker 1: I got closer, I could see my mom for the
- 3:03Speaker 1: first time. I mean, She was so beautiful. She was
- 3:07Speaker 1: dressed in white. I mean, she looked like an angel.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And I just stood over it. I said, Mom, you
- 3:16Speaker 1: are my hero. Everything I am, everything I hope to
- 3:20Speaker 1: be was because of you. You love me so much.
- 3:23Speaker 1: You gave me a life. You're the only one that
- 3:26Speaker 1: ever believed in me. How did I repay her? By
- 3:31Speaker 1: getting drunk, by getting high, by getting stupid, by hanging
- 3:34Speaker 1: out with losers, for what? All she ever wanted to
- 3:39Speaker 1: do was talk to me. I wish I could talk
- 3:44Speaker 1: to you now, Mom. I wish you could see what
- 3:47Speaker 1: I'm doing. Why couldn't I have been a better son?
- 3:54Speaker 1: We are defined by our choices. But if you surround
- 3:57Speaker 1: yourself with people involved in drugs and alcohol and pills,
- 4:01Speaker 1: it's a dead end. I'm not here to preach to you.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I'm here to tell you I live that life. It
- 4:07Speaker 1: leads to broken hearts, broken relationships, broken dreams, and death.
- 4:12Speaker 1: For what? To get high? If you have a mother
- 4:15Speaker 1: or a father, when you go home, tell them how
- 4:18Speaker 1: much you love them. See, my whole life was about
- 4:23Speaker 1: being rich and famous. I had to be a millionaire.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I had to win the race. I had to win
- 4:28Speaker 1: the race, the expense of my marriage, my family, my friends,
- 4:31Speaker 1: for what? To be all alone in the world? I
- 4:34Speaker 1: learned what is truly important, and that is how precious
- 4:40Speaker 1: this gift of life is and our families, and how
- 4:46Speaker 1: quickly it can be taken away. See, I no longer
- 4:49Speaker 1: live in time I live in moments. See, it's not
- 4:52Speaker 1: what's in your pocket that matters. It's what's in your
- 4:55Speaker 1: heart that truly matters. Love. Love is just a word
- 5:01Speaker 1: until somebody comes along and gives it meaning. You. You're
- 5:08Speaker 1: the meaning.
