- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here and it is Friday.
- 0:17Happy Friday to you. Welcome to the end of the week.
- 0:21I hope that this has been a great week and at the weekend
- 0:24ahead I always got a little bit of time and restoration for you
- 0:29and those you love. Today, as we always do on a
- 0:34Friday, we are reading a Psalm together and this is an epic,
- 0:39epic Psalm. This is a very long Psalm
- 0:43actually and it is a Psalm that talks about how good and
- 0:47faithful God is despite how rubbish humans are.
- 0:52And as we read through this Psalm and you hear about how
- 0:56broken people are and how faithful God is, let that
- 1:01message wash over you that it doesn't matter what we bring to
- 1:04the table. We worship and believe in an
- 1:08incredibly consistently good God.
- 1:12What wonderful news that is. So let us settle in and share
- 1:19the words of the psalmist. This is a Psalm of ASAP as we
- 1:23hear about how good and consistent God is despite our
- 1:26best slash worst efforts to live with Him.
- 1:31Let's read together Psalm 78. All my people listen to my
- 1:48instructions. Open your ears to what I am
- 1:51saying, for I will speak to you in a parable.
- 1:55I will teach you hidden lessons from our past stories we have
- 1:59heard and known, stories our ancestors handed down to us.
- 2:04We will not hide these truths from our children.
- 2:07We will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the
- 2:11Lord, about His power and His mighty wonders.
- 2:16For he issued his laws to Jacob. He gave his instructions to
- 2:20Israel. He commanded our ancestors to
- 2:24teach them to their children, so the next generation might know
- 2:27them, even the children not yet born, and they in turn will
- 2:32teach their own children. So each generation should set
- 2:36its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles
- 2:41and obeying his commands. Then they will not be like their
- 2:45ancestors, stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful, refusing to give
- 2:50their hearts to God. The warriors of Ephraim, though
- 2:54armed with bows, turned their backs and fled on the day of
- 2:58battle. They did not keep God's covenant
- 3:02and refused to live by his instructions.
- 3:05They forgot what he had done, The great wonders He had shown
- 3:09them the miracles he did for their ancestors on the plains of
- 3:13Zoan in the land of Egypt. For he divided the sea and led
- 3:18them through, making the water stand up like walls.
- 3:24In the daytime he led them by a cloud, and all night by a pillar
- 3:28of fire. He split open the rocks in the
- 3:32wilderness to give them water, as from a gushing spring he made
- 3:37streams poor from the rock, making the waters flow down like
- 3:42a river. Yet they kept on sinning against
- 3:46him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert, They
- 3:50stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they
- 3:54craved. They even spoke against God
- 3:58himself, saying God can't give us food in the wilderness.
- 4:03Yes, He can strike a rocks of water, gushes out, but he can't
- 4:07give his people bread and meat. When the Lord heard them, he was
- 4:11furious. The fire of his wrath burned
- 4:14against Jacob. Yes, His anger rose against
- 4:19Israel, for they did not believe God or trust Him to care for
- 4:23them, But He commanded the skies to open.
- 4:27He opened the doors of heaven. He rained down manner for them
- 4:32to eat. He gave them bread from heaven.
- 4:35They ate the food of angels. God gave them all they could
- 4:39hold. He released the east wind in the
- 4:42heavens and guided the South wind by His mighty power.
- 4:46He rained down meat as thick as dust, birds as plentiful as the
- 4:52sand on the seashore. He caused the birds to fall
- 4:56within their camp and all around their tents.
- 4:59The people ate their fill. He gave them what they craved.
- 5:04But before they satisfied their cravings, while the meat was yet
- 5:08in their mouths, the anger of God rose against them, and He
- 5:12killed their strongest men. He struck down the finest of
- 5:16Israel's young men, but in spite of this, the people kept
- 5:21sinning. Despite his wonders, they
- 5:25refused to trust him, So he ended their lives in failure,
- 5:30their years in terror. When God began killing them,
- 5:34they finally sought him. They repented and took God
- 5:38seriously. Then they remembered that God
- 5:41was their rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer, but all
- 5:47they gave him was lip service. They lied to him with their
- 5:51tongues. Their hearts were not loyal to
- 5:53Him. They did not keep his covenant.
- 5:56Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy
- 6:01them all. Many times he held back his
- 6:04anger and did not unleash his fury, for he remembered that
- 6:09they were merely mortal, gone like a breath of wind that never
- 6:14returns. Oh how often they rebelled
- 6:17against him in the wilderness and grieved his heart in that
- 6:21dry wasteland. Again and again they tested
- 6:25God's patience and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
- 6:29They did not remember his power and how he rescued them from
- 6:32their enemies. They did not remember his
- 6:35miraculous signs in Egypt, his wonders on the plain of Zoan.
- 6:41For he turned their rivers into blood so no one could drink from
- 6:45the streams. He sent vast swarms of flies to
- 6:48consume them, and hordes of frogs to ruin them.
- 6:52He gave their crops to caterpillars.
- 6:55The harvest was consumed by locusts.
- 6:58He destroyed their grapevines with hail, and shattered their
- 7:01Sycamore figs with sleet. He abandoned their cattle to the
- 7:05hail, their livestock to bolts of lightning.
- 7:09He loosed on them his fierce anger, all his fury, rage and
- 7:13hostility. He dispatched against them a
- 7:17band of destroying angels. He turned his anger against
- 7:21them. He did not spare the Egyptians
- 7:24lives, but ravaged them with the plague.
- 7:27He killed the oldest son of each Egyptian family, the flower of
- 7:32youth throughout the land of Egypt.
- 7:35But he led his own people like a flock of sheep, guiding them
- 7:40safely through the wilderness. He kept them safe so they were
- 7:45not afraid. But the sea covered their
- 7:47enemies. He brought them to the border of
- 7:50his Holy Land, to this land of hills he had won for them.
- 7:55He drove out the nations before them.
- 7:58He gave them their inheritance by lot.
- 8:01He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes, but they kept
- 8:05testing and rebelling against God Most High.
- 8:09They did not obey his laws. They turned back and were as
- 8:14faithless as their parents. They were as undependable as a
- 8:19crooked bow. They angered God by building
- 8:22shrines to other gods. They made him jealous with their
- 8:26idols. When God heard them, he was very
- 8:30angry and he completely rejected Israel.
- 8:35Then he abandoned his dwelling at Shiloh, the Tabernacle where
- 8:39he had lived among the people. He allowed the arc of his might
- 8:43to be captured. He surrendered his glory into
- 8:47enemy hands. He gave his people over to be
- 8:50butchered by the sword because he was so angry with his own
- 8:55people, his special possession. The young men were killed by
- 8:59fire. The young women died before
- 9:02singing their wedding songs. Their priests were slaughtered
- 9:06and their widows could not mourn their deaths.
- 9:10Then the Lord rose up as though waking from sleep.
- 9:14Like a warrior aroused from a drunken stupor, He routed his
- 9:20enemies and sent them to eternal shame.
- 9:23But he rejected Joseph's descendants.
- 9:26He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
- 9:29He chose instead the tribe of Judah and Mount Zion, which he
- 9:34loved. There he built his sanctuary as
- 9:37high as the heavens, as solid and enduring as the earth.
- 9:43He chose his servant David, calling him from the sheep pens.
- 9:49He took David from tending ewes and lambs and made him the
- 9:53shepherd of Jacob's descendants. God's own people, Israel.
- 9:58He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful
- 10:03hands. You are a good and faithful God,
- 10:19so consistent through time and history.
- 10:23And even here you are loving us, holding us resident in our
- 10:30heart. Through your spirit, we just
- 10:34praise you. Thank you, Jesus, for coming and
- 10:38revealing the nature of yourself to us, the nature of our God to
- 10:44us. We are so grateful for you and
- 10:49so grateful how you continually draw us back no matter how many
- 10:54times we mess up. Thank you for your generosity
- 10:58and your patience with us. We are so grateful for you and
- 11:04it's in your name we pray Jesus. Amen.
