- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, how's it going. I'm Bury from Joyce, Manor.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Wonderful. Thanks so much.
- 0:04Speaker 3: You're heading back to Australia to support the One to
- 0:06Speaker 3: Ease on their upcoming tour.
- 0:08Speaker 2: What are you most excited about for this front of shows.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm excited to be back in Australia. You know, it's
- 0:18Speaker 1: been a while, so I love it there. I love
- 0:22Speaker 1: the crowds, I love I find the people really easy
- 0:25Speaker 1: to talk to. So I'm excited to just find myself
- 0:29Speaker 1: in bars, you know, chatting with people. Yeah, because it's
- 0:35Speaker 1: been it's been a minute, you know, and I feel
- 0:37Speaker 1: like we were over there somewhat regularly before the pandemic
- 0:40Speaker 1: and I've really enjoyed it. You know, whenever people ask
- 0:43Speaker 1: me like, what's what are your favorite places? You know,
- 0:46Speaker 1: people who aren't in bands whatever, They're like, oh, you
- 0:47Speaker 1: get to travel, that's so cool. What are some of
- 0:49Speaker 1: your favorite places you've been? I say, I love Australia,
- 0:52Speaker 1: so yeah, it really it's because being from California. Well
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'm from California, but my parents are from Manchester and
- 1:00Speaker 1: I feel like, yeah, I feel like so like all
- 1:03Speaker 1: my dad's friends growing up are like these man Cunion
- 1:08Speaker 1: degenerate dudes, and so I feel like Australia is just
- 1:12Speaker 1: that sweet spot of just like surfer but but you
- 1:16Speaker 1: know it just it's just the humor is a little
- 1:19Speaker 1: more kind of like in line with the English humor.
- 1:23Speaker 1: So yeah, I find it very easy to to hang.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, I think you're so right.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I've got family both in the US and my dad
- 1:33Speaker 3: also grew up in the UK, and I definitely think
- 1:35Speaker 3: Australia is right in the middle as well of that
- 1:37Speaker 3: humor and just yeah, and especially California.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah, and like the US is a big place, but
- 1:43Speaker 1: like the vibe of California and the vibe of of Australia,
- 1:48Speaker 1: there's a lot in common. So it's very comfortable for me.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, definitely, that's awesome. And our crowds here in
- 1:55Speaker 3: Australia have known to be passionate. Do you have a
- 1:57Speaker 3: favorite memory from the last time you were here in Australia.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Not from the last time. The last time was cool,
- 2:04Speaker 1: but don't remember it that much, honestly, not for any reason.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I just it was it was kind of unmemorable for
- 2:13Speaker 1: some reason. I think it's an unmemorable like a few
- 2:15Speaker 1: years of my life. But we played I forget what
- 2:19Speaker 1: year maybe, like I want to say it was like
- 2:23Speaker 1: maybe two thousand twelve or thirteen. We played the Gasometer
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Gaso people got. Is it still there?
- 2:35Speaker 2: I don't know, but I know what you're talking about.
- 2:38Speaker 1: That was one of my favorite shows we've ever played. Yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 1: that was such a fantastic Like when people ask me, like,
- 2:44Speaker 1: what's your favorite show you've ever played, that's that's definitely
- 2:48Speaker 1: like top two or three.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Oh no way, Oh that's awsome.
- 2:52Speaker 1: For a long time, that was my favorite show. And
- 2:54Speaker 1: you know, there's a couple that maybe rival it, but
- 2:57Speaker 1: that's that's still that was such an amazing show.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, Oh that's awesomething for the perfect show.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Is there a song from any of your albums that
- 3:06Speaker 3: holds a special meaning to maybe one that was particularly
- 3:09Speaker 3: challenging or rewarding to create?
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah, a song off of our twenty sixteen record Cody.
- 3:19Speaker 1: The song is the Last You Heard of Me?
- 3:21Speaker 3: It was.
- 3:23Speaker 1: It went through a couple iterations and then when we
- 3:25Speaker 1: finally got it, kind of got it almost like eighty
- 3:30Speaker 1: percent the way there, you know, figured out like how
- 3:33Speaker 1: to present it. It just really struggled, like it we
- 3:37Speaker 1: couldn't get the ending right, and just it was one
- 3:42Speaker 1: of those ones where you work and you work and
- 3:44Speaker 1: you work and you really risk just hating the song
- 3:49Speaker 1: and just never getting anywhere with it, you know, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: it finally clicked. That's one of those ones. Like all
- 3:56Speaker 1: the hard work and all the different revisions and all
- 3:58Speaker 1: the different things, like it's hard to imagine it any
- 4:01Speaker 1: other way, you know, And it doesn't sound like we
- 4:04Speaker 1: worked and worked and worked and slaved away at it.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But I would say that's that's one of my favorite
- 4:10Speaker 1: choice banner songs, and it's as far as the amount
- 4:13Speaker 1: of work that went into it, that's got to be
- 4:18Speaker 1: the one I'm most proud of because because we we
- 4:22Speaker 1: really just drove ourselves insane trying to get that one perfect.
- 4:25Speaker 1: And I think, yeah, I think it's pretty good.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Yeah, did you guys like towards the end, how did
- 4:31Speaker 3: you finally get there? Did you have to kind of
- 4:33Speaker 3: strip things back and just go whatever it's going to be,
- 4:35Speaker 3: it's going to be, or.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, you know, it had like it was just
- 4:44Speaker 1: one of those things like there's so many little things
- 4:47Speaker 1: like it definitely had kind of the the general blueprint,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but you know, it does weird things. The song does
- 4:59Speaker 1: weird things, like like three quarters of the way through
- 5:08Speaker 1: the third verse, it just changes chords. It goes to
- 5:11Speaker 1: E minor and that's a really unusual thing to do,
- 5:15Speaker 1: like that's and kind of once we did that, it
- 5:19Speaker 1: unlocked it, and it kind of it kind of made
- 5:21Speaker 1: like okay, because the thing you're fighting when you're arranging
- 5:24Speaker 1: a song is getting it to not get boring. And
- 5:28Speaker 1: the song kept getting boring, like it was cool, but
- 5:32Speaker 1: then it would get boring and you would make these
- 5:34Speaker 1: like drastic changes that it would get less boring, but
- 5:38Speaker 1: you would lose like the hypnotic quality that the song had,
- 5:42Speaker 1: like the song would be pulling you in, and then
- 5:45Speaker 1: we would make these changes and it would just lose
- 5:48Speaker 1: whatever it had going. But we just started making these
- 5:51Speaker 1: really subtle changes, and so it's just as really delicate
- 5:54Speaker 1: art of Yeah, you know, it's kind of like you
- 6:00Speaker 1: know the bonds eye tree where you're trimming, like so
- 6:03Speaker 1: you're just making these little trims and you add a
- 6:06Speaker 1: little too much, take a little too much off, you know.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But that was one of the that's one where we
- 6:10Speaker 1: eventually got it and yeah, yeah, I suppose it was
- 6:13Speaker 1: it was kind of like only leaving the necessary elements,
- 6:17Speaker 1: but getting everything that needed to be there in there.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it in saying all of that too is
- 6:24Speaker 3: a Joyce manner in the songwriting process.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Is it driven by one person or is it a
- 6:29Speaker 2: collaborative effort from all of you?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oh, I would say.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So.
- 6:36Speaker 1: The first record was like almost one hundred percent me. Yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 1: you know, I wrote pretty much everything on that. And
- 6:43Speaker 1: then slowly it became a bit more collaborative with the
- 6:47Speaker 1: guitar player and I Chase. Chase started contributing more ideas
- 6:50Speaker 1: and I never hung over again. He has a lot
- 6:52Speaker 1: of really amazing musical ideas that we work together on.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And then Cody was the first time that it was myself,
- 7:00Speaker 1: Chase and the producer Rob Schnaff, who's an amazing record producer.
- 7:05Speaker 1: That was very collaborative between the three of us. And
- 7:08Speaker 1: and this is all to say Matt has has also
- 7:12Speaker 1: had like you know, just his his presence and his
- 7:21Speaker 1: h He keeps it very simple, which is good. So
- 7:26Speaker 1: it's it's not like he's contributing a lot of oh
- 7:29Speaker 1: I want to do this or I want to do that,
- 7:31Speaker 1: So we're having to fight against that you know, like
- 7:33Speaker 1: he he he wants to serve the song, which is
- 7:36Speaker 1: just an amazing contribution in itself, and and just him
- 7:40Speaker 1: being there and what he gets excited about or what
- 7:43Speaker 1: he responds to is this amazing in built relationship that
- 7:47Speaker 1: we have that so so yeah, it's as collaborative, yes,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and it's been the same the same dudes the whole time,
- 7:53Speaker 1: but but he kind of more so as the as
- 7:57Speaker 1: albums have gone on.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. Oh that's so that's so interesting to learn.
- 8:01Speaker 3: So it really was you kind of just starting out
- 8:03Speaker 3: and then yeah, you gave your ideas an input, but
- 8:06Speaker 3: you didn't drown each other out.
- 8:07Speaker 2: At the same time.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Well, yeah, and it's it's it's it's like any relationship.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's it goes, it goes through its ups and downs,
- 8:14Speaker 1: and it gets tricky and and you know, uh, but yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 1: I guess I guess when it first started, I had
- 8:24Speaker 1: like a bad catalog of songs that I'd kind of
- 8:26Speaker 1: written underpreset myself.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's awesome. Stepping away from Joyce Matter for
- 8:32Speaker 2: a little bit, what music that you're listening to.
- 8:34Speaker 1: At the moment.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Has your taste in music change since Joyce Mana started.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I suppose a little bit, but no, not really. I like,
- 8:54Speaker 1: I would say the main things that I like are
- 8:56Speaker 1: kind of like nineties uh pop punk type stuff. So
- 9:05Speaker 1: I love linked Ay too, I love Weezer, I love
- 9:10Speaker 1: like well, I don't know, I love like just kind
- 9:15Speaker 1: of more nice. I guess nineties ish power pop stuff
- 9:18Speaker 1: like I love the gin Blossoms, I love Jimmy World.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And then I also really am a big fan of
- 9:25Speaker 1: sixties music, so I love the Beach Boys, I love
- 9:29Speaker 1: the Beatles, I love eighties stuff like I'm a huge
- 9:36Speaker 1: Smith's and Morrissey fan. I love the Stone Roses. I
- 9:40Speaker 1: love The Laws are one of my favorite bands. So
- 9:46Speaker 1: I guess like indie pop pop punk that's like Emo Tinge.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I don't really like Emo, but I like like I
- 9:53Speaker 1: like some I like like Saves the Day. I like
- 9:55Speaker 1: like kind of pop punk that's Emo Tinge. Yes, yeah, so,
- 10:00Speaker 1: but I guess everything is kind of poppy. So that's
- 10:03Speaker 1: that's that's kind of what I tend to like. And
- 10:06Speaker 1: you know, when when I was younger, I was I
- 10:10Speaker 1: was really into some hardcore stuff, so I liked I
- 10:14Speaker 1: liked hardcore, and I think you can hear that a
- 10:16Speaker 1: bit more on the early step, but I don't listen
- 10:18Speaker 1: to that as much as they used to.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, oh interesting, Well you like all the good stuff,
- 10:22Speaker 2: so that's good.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I honestly like my music taste is really boring.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's kind of like if you were to flip through
- 10:29Speaker 1: the posters at like a store on the mall, it's like, okay,
- 10:33Speaker 1: David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Weezer, Yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Green Day, all the good ones like it's you.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Know, yeah, yeah, I like, I like just really good
- 10:45Speaker 1: songwriting and so.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's awesome. What's it been like? Have you
- 10:51Speaker 2: had a chance yet to rehearse with the One to
- 10:53Speaker 2: yase or.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Tour with them? No, no, I've never I've never met
- 10:57Speaker 1: them before.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, okay, awesome. So we don't really know what
- 11:01Speaker 2: to expect with the tour going on obviously.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Yeah no, we might. We might brawl on stage.
- 11:12Speaker 3: What's something fans would be surprised to learn about the
- 11:14Speaker 3: band's daily routine whilst on tour.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I think they would be surprised how annoying we are,
- 11:30Speaker 1: Like the how how just? I think, like, you know,
- 11:35Speaker 1: it's been it's been Chase, Matt and I the whole time,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and people joined the band, and they're kind of like,
- 11:42Speaker 1: it's like you guys speak a different language. There's so
- 11:45Speaker 1: much inside joke and so much just kind of like
- 11:48Speaker 1: we all grew up together, so we kind of but
- 11:52Speaker 1: just how how annoying it is I think, and how
- 11:56Speaker 1: insufferable we are, I think, and how again uncool we are.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I think it would be It would be a shock
- 12:02Speaker 1: that I really thought you guys would be more charismatic
- 12:06Speaker 1: or funny. Yeah, but we're just it's kind of like,
- 12:10Speaker 1: you know, weird kids from California that uh speak some
- 12:16Speaker 1: weird Torrents language that no one else understands.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, that's awesome.
- 12:21Speaker 3: And speaking of touring, do you guys like to party
- 12:24Speaker 3: or do you guys keep it pretty low key nowadays?
- 12:28Speaker 2: Uh?
- 12:28Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's the toughest part about touring is
- 12:32Speaker 1: the too much partying. It's really fun, but but we yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 1: we party a lot and it's great and we love it,
- 12:39Speaker 1: but it makes it hard to do it long term
- 12:44Speaker 1: because it's kind of like just going on a bendor,
- 12:46Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, but it's really I mean, it's one
- 12:48Speaker 1: of the best parts because it's you don't have any responsibilities.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I have nothing, I have nothing. I have to be
- 12:52Speaker 1: up in the morning for you know, like my night
- 12:54Speaker 1: doesn't start really till what I'm thirty at night. So yeah,
- 13:00Speaker 1: So it's it's really really easy to Once you start
- 13:04Speaker 1: having fun and the night kind of starts to kind
- 13:09Speaker 1: of get its wheels, it's easy to go with it
- 13:10Speaker 1: and like, oh, we're going here, let's go there, let's
- 13:12Speaker 1: go to that thing, let's go to same and yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and you might as well, you know, and and you know,
- 13:16Speaker 1: they'll come a day where maybe it's it's best not to,
- 13:19Speaker 1: but I'm not there yet. Yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gonna,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna, I'm gonna milk it for all it's worth.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep going.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Exactly you should. You don't know how many bands I've
- 13:27Speaker 2: spoken to recently that are like, no, we just do nothing.
- 13:30Speaker 2: We're boring, we go to sleep.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Alike absolutely not, yes, exactly, no, we are not. No,
- 13:36Speaker 1: we might be boring, but we're we're at the bar. Yeah.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's awesome. What's the hardest part of being on
- 13:44Speaker 2: tour and how do you deal with it?
- 13:47Speaker 1: I suppose the hardest part of being on tour is
- 13:53Speaker 1: different for everybody, but for me, I can speak to.
- 13:56Speaker 1: My experience is just being around people constantly. I need
- 14:01Speaker 1: a little while to myself. And it's not really the
- 14:05Speaker 1: same quality of time to yourself. When you just go,
- 14:10Speaker 1: like sit in a coffee shop alone, you just kind
- 14:13Speaker 1: of feel like a loser a little bit, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: like you're just sitting there by yourself, and it kind
- 14:18Speaker 1: of gets It's not quite the same as being at
- 14:21Speaker 1: home or just being in your in your in your element,
- 14:23Speaker 1: relaxed and just on because I spend a lot of
- 14:25Speaker 1: time on my own at home, but it's different because
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm I'm at home. So yeah, but on tour, like
- 14:36Speaker 1: you just can't get you can't get time to yourself.
- 14:39Speaker 2: That sucks.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's fine. No, it's it's totally fun because
- 14:42Speaker 1: it's not it's not for like a long, long long time. Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and so you just have to kind of lean into
- 14:47Speaker 1: it and enjoy it. But I think that's I think
- 14:49Speaker 1: that that's a universal struggle, is just needing alone time
- 14:54Speaker 1: and being you know, getting on each other's nerves. Yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 1: but but also also being like, I don't know, hang out, yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, it's like it's like it's just like
- 15:03Speaker 1: being in any relationship, like you're dating somebody. They're on
- 15:06Speaker 1: your nerves, but you're like, what are you doing? Yeah,
- 15:08Speaker 1: but it's like you're on my nerves. But it's like,
- 15:10Speaker 1: well what else, Like I don't know, let's get you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: but yeah, that's well.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it's sort of awesome, but I feel you're struggler.
- 15:18Speaker 3: You beat in each other's pockets all the time. But
- 15:21Speaker 3: at the same time, maybe friends and yeah.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Yeah, no, they're my best friends in the world. And
- 15:25Speaker 1: you know, I get I'm two days at home and
- 15:27Speaker 1: I miss them, you know, So it's it's but it
- 15:29Speaker 1: is the kind of thing where you get so comfortable
- 15:30Speaker 1: with one another that it's like everybody is is very themselves,
- 15:35Speaker 1: you know, everyone kind of just so yeah, everybody, it's
- 15:39Speaker 1: very comfortable. And then and then yeah, just just the
- 15:41Speaker 1: lack of the lack of autonomy, I suppose. Yeah, gets
- 15:45Speaker 1: can be a challenge, but it's not. It's not a
- 15:48Speaker 1: bad challenge. It's good.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Yeah, And just quickly, final question, is there any hint
- 15:54Speaker 3: of new music coming soon for Joyce.
- 15:56Speaker 1: And er or yeah, yeah, I know, we're we're working,
- 15:59Speaker 1: you know, just slowly chipping away at it, like just
- 16:03Speaker 1: trying to make sure it's it's up to the standard
- 16:07Speaker 1: we've set for ourselves. But yes, we we were like
- 16:11Speaker 1: a good amount of the way through in your record.
- 16:14Speaker 1: But no no like release date set or anything. Yeah,
- 16:18Speaker 1: still still writing it. But but I would say it's
- 16:22Speaker 1: over half written and recorded, half written and half recorded,
- 16:26Speaker 1: and you know, just just getting there, you know, not
- 16:32Speaker 1: not there's no rush. You know, it's our seventh album.
- 16:35Speaker 1: It's got to be. We want to make sure it's
- 16:37Speaker 1: it's really good before. Yeah, but it's it's yeah, it's
- 16:40Speaker 1: it's there's we have some good stuff and yeah, it's
- 16:44Speaker 1: it's definitely it's definitely in the works.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Awesome. That's so exciting, Barry.
- 16:48Speaker 1: It's been pleasure.
- 16:49Speaker 2: We can't wait to see. Thank you for your time,
- 16:52Speaker 2: love it.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Thank you, thanks so much.
