- 0:21Speaker 1: as Farmlands.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Jnny mckaye, Host of the Countries with us Ajami good
- 0:24Speaker 2: A Heather. So, do you reckon every heat wave in
- 0:26Speaker 2: drought cloud may have a silver lining? Well, it may,
- 0:29Speaker 2: And of course we're facing our own uncertainty this year
- 0:33Speaker 2: with the prospect of our Nino. Some people are calling
- 0:36Speaker 2: it a super al Nino, so that may affect our production.
- 0:40Speaker 2: It may increase the prices, but the loss of production
- 0:43Speaker 2: will probably wipe that out. But when I said does
- 0:46Speaker 2: every heat wave and drought cloud have a silver lining,
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm talking about what's happening in the northern Hemisphere, especially
- 0:52Speaker 2: in the United Kingdom. Obviously in Europe. It's starting to
- 0:56Speaker 2: really hit food production, which, in a perverse sort of way,
- 1:00Speaker 2: we may benefit from milk flows. Crops of apples and
- 1:03Speaker 2: grain are welting under three months of excessively hot weather
- 1:08Speaker 2: that pushed UK temperatures to over thirty five degrees. Initially
- 1:13Speaker 2: we were expecting in terms of milk production a five
- 1:16Speaker 2: percent increase in Great Britain three percent across the entire UK,
- 1:21Speaker 2: but they've had these heat waves in May and June
- 1:25Speaker 2: production has fallen back. Milk production this is in France
- 1:29Speaker 2: by seven percent, three point six percent in Germany. Now.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Paul Painter, the owner of the Yummi Fruit Company in Havelock, North,
- 1:36Speaker 2: has just returned from visiting European apple growing areas, including France,
- 1:42Speaker 2: and he said where he crunched the numbers on these
- 1:45Speaker 2: trees get into survival mode once they get past about
- 1:49Speaker 2: twenty eight degrees solsius. He said, when they get past
- 1:52Speaker 2: thirty degrees solsius on an extended basis that basically apple
- 1:56Speaker 2: growth will stop dead. So this heat wave is also
- 2:00Speaker 2: hitting maize and corn crops, and the key growing regions
- 2:04Speaker 2: of France and Hungary potentially the lowest yields in seventeen years.
- 2:09Speaker 2: French crops have been the weakest in fifteen years. Some
- 2:13Speaker 2: are predicting a decline of eight percent in the French
- 2:18Speaker 2: corn harvest. What does this all mean for us? It
- 2:21Speaker 2: means that anything they grow or produce in the Northern Hemisphere,
- 2:24Speaker 2: especially that relies on some of these crops i e. Dairy,
- 2:28Speaker 2: they'd rely on the maize feed. They're going to become
- 2:32Speaker 2: much more expensive to produce. So and as I said
- 2:36Speaker 2: in a perverse sort of way, the Northern Hemisphere heat
- 2:39Speaker 2: wave Heather is playing into the hands of New Zealand farmers.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You can see how that works out.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Hey, did you like the little agribusiness lift out in
- 2:46Speaker 2: the Herald today? Well, Heather, you're doing at a disservice.
- 2:49Speaker 2: It wasn't little, it was it was twenty eight pages
- 2:53Speaker 2: and I had a chat to fran O'Sullivan, our head
- 2:55Speaker 2: of business Content. Look, honestly, she's done a great job.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I've seen these liftouts before and sometimes they're full of
- 3:02Speaker 2: I'll get in trouble for saying this, Heather. They're full
- 3:05Speaker 2: of press releases and patsy pieces, really meaty agribusiness stuff.
- 3:11Speaker 2: They've got twenty eight pages. You can get it in
- 3:13Speaker 2: the Herald. A lot of it's available not beyond the
- 3:16Speaker 2: pay War but on the Herald website and also our
- 3:19Speaker 2: country website, all sorts of topics like trade. Under Trump,
- 3:25Speaker 2: He's changed the rules there completely AI, making New Zealand
- 3:29Speaker 2: ag more competitive. And you only need to think of
- 3:32Speaker 2: the likes a Halter for that one agg emissions, the
- 3:35Speaker 2: fuel crisis, these weight loss drugs driving meat sales, and
- 3:40Speaker 2: there's a nice wee piece on who farmers will vote
- 3:43Speaker 2: for in the upcoming election. You don't need to be
- 3:47Speaker 2: a rocket science to figure out scientists sorry here that
- 3:50Speaker 2: to figure out that one. No fair enough.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Hey, thank you very much, Jamie, appreciate it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: As always, you enjoy your evening, Jamie McKay, Host of
