- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, coach, turning our attention to New Hampshire home
- 0:04Speaker 1: and home beginning Friday, up and up and Durham. Just
- 0:06Speaker 1: want to get your thoughts heading into the weekend series.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always, uh, you know, a tough game when
- 0:13Speaker 2: you play up at New Hampshire. You know, Mike sus
- 0:18Speaker 2: always has his teams prepared. They're very well coached. It's
- 0:22Speaker 2: a tough building to play in. I think they have
- 0:24Speaker 2: a very talented freshman class that they've added to that team,
- 0:31Speaker 2: you know, and then you have the returners in La
- 0:34Speaker 2: Clerk and you know Winters. I think Fitzgerald on defense
- 0:39Speaker 2: is someone we're going to have to pay attention to,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and they're it's just a It's a tough place to play,
- 0:48Speaker 2: it really is. And there are no easy weekends in
- 0:52Speaker 2: this league. And New Hampshire's going to pose another really
- 0:58Speaker 2: tough opponent for us come Friday night.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Awesome, We'll open up for questions show get us going.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Thanks Thanks Klein.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Cav so many come from behind wins this season. What
- 1:12Speaker 3: does that say about your leadership and the belief in
- 1:15Speaker 3: the room that no deficit is too big, even though
- 1:17Speaker 3: that might add some gray hairs to the head coach.
- 1:22Speaker 3: If I had hair, Joe, trust me, I can relate
- 1:25Speaker 3: to that.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, if I just think, yeah, we you know, I've
- 1:30Speaker 2: talked about it quite a bit that you know, we
- 1:32Speaker 2: have seven seniors and there's not many teams I think
- 1:36Speaker 2: that are going to have seven seniors because just the
- 1:40Speaker 2: way that college hockey is today, with guys leaving early
- 1:43Speaker 2: for pro or transfers or those types of issues. It just,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, you it's hard to keep you know, the scene,
- 1:54Speaker 2: the freshman class that you recruit. To keep that entire
- 1:58Speaker 2: class intact for four years is very difficult these days
- 2:01Speaker 2: in college the college sports pretty much. So the fact
- 2:07Speaker 2: that we do I think they're very experienced and they
- 2:12Speaker 2: don't panic when we get behind in a game. And
- 2:15Speaker 2: it's been evident this year as you alluded to, that
- 2:19Speaker 2: we've been able to you know, come back and whether
- 2:23Speaker 2: tie a game or even win some games coming from behind.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Anthony Elaine Sumaki really young kid. What did you see
- 2:33Speaker 3: in him when you were looking at him? And how
- 2:35Speaker 3: has he progressed since the start of camp till now?
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, he's an elite skater for one, and he's
- 2:43Speaker 2: by far, I think the youngest kid on our team. So,
- 2:51Speaker 2: you know, I guess one of the things we saw
- 2:53Speaker 2: in him, Joe was his ability to handle the pock,
- 2:56Speaker 2: ability to skate. And he doesn't get enough defense. Excuse me, Uh,
- 3:02Speaker 2: he doesn't get enough. I think praise about his defense.
- 3:07Speaker 2: He's really strong and good down low as well, especially
- 3:12Speaker 2: for being one of the youngest kids in Hockey East.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Ask question for me, and can you talk a little
- 3:19Speaker 3: bit about how Mike helped you as your assistant for
- 3:23Speaker 3: the first two years and kind of getting your program
- 3:25Speaker 3: running you off the ground.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he was a kid that I definitely well some
- 3:32Speaker 2: I had worked with him previous when when he was
- 3:35Speaker 2: he might have been a senior at u n H
- 3:37Speaker 2: and I was taking a team Massachusetts out to the
- 3:42Speaker 2: national development camp in the summer and Mike was my assistant,
- 3:46Speaker 2: so I got to know him there. And then when
- 3:49Speaker 2: you know, I got the job and I was looking
- 3:51Speaker 2: for he had just started at Brown, I think it
- 3:54Speaker 2: was his second year at Brown, and he was someone
- 3:57Speaker 2: that I was familiar with. It was someone that neew hockey,
- 4:00Speaker 2: so that was important to me. I wanted an assistant
- 4:03Speaker 2: coach that knew the league. And he came in and
- 4:07Speaker 2: he had played you know he had played a lot
- 4:09Speaker 2: of pro hockey. He never actually played in the NHL,
- 4:12Speaker 2: but played a lot of American League games, played overseas,
- 4:15Speaker 2: had a lot of experience, and he was great to
- 4:19Speaker 2: have as a right hand man those first couple of
- 4:22Speaker 2: years because it wasn't easy and he was it was
- 4:28Speaker 2: you know, like I said, I thought he did a
- 4:32Speaker 2: really nice job here. He's a personal friend, and you know,
- 4:36Speaker 2: I think he's done a nice job at New Hampshire.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Thanks Kav.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Damn Booth, go ahead, Good morning, coach, Good morning.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:49Speaker 4: So I'm working on a story with Jake Percival about
- 4:54Speaker 4: him being a Connecticut kid, about his impact on the
- 4:56Speaker 4: program over the years. So my first question for you is,
- 5:01Speaker 4: with this programs continue to scent over the years, how
- 5:04Speaker 4: important has Jake's impact been on the ice, in the
- 5:07Speaker 4: locker room and ever since he stepped foot in stores.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he was a kid that we saw out at
- 5:13Speaker 2: the USHL. I didn't really know much about him, and
- 5:16Speaker 2: he caught my eye out at the opening tournament out
- 5:19Speaker 2: at the USHL. He was playing for Cedar Rapids and
- 5:22Speaker 2: Mark Carlson, who does a great job with his players,
- 5:25Speaker 2: and I knew that if he could play for Mark
- 5:28Speaker 2: Carlson because he's a tough, demanding coach that he'd be
- 5:32Speaker 2: a type of kid that could fit in here. And
- 5:35Speaker 2: he skates really well. He's got a excellent shot that
- 5:41Speaker 2: he probably I want him to shoot more for sure,
- 5:45Speaker 2: And I'm glad he did last weekend because he finally
- 5:48Speaker 2: broke through last weekend. But he just he's a superb
- 5:52Speaker 2: penalty killer. He competes every day. One of his I
- 5:58Speaker 2: think most unique as a player is his stick is elite.
- 6:03Speaker 2: He's very very good at baiting people into passing a
- 6:06Speaker 2: puck into a lane that he can either deflect the
- 6:08Speaker 2: puck or intercept the puck. And it's it's something that
- 6:11Speaker 2: he does really well. It's probably what makes him not
- 6:14Speaker 2: probably it's one of the things that makes him an
- 6:16Speaker 2: excellent penalty killer as well.
- 6:20Speaker 4: You know, And in terms of continuing to build the
- 6:23Speaker 4: culture that you want here with the Huskies, how important
- 6:27Speaker 4: has he been to building that culture and being a
- 6:30Speaker 4: part of something that you know, you guys have been
- 6:33Speaker 4: ranked several years in a row now and continue to
- 6:35Speaker 4: be a force in Hockey East.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting, you know everybody that's such a buzzword,
- 6:42Speaker 2: the culture word. I think it's I think it's got
- 6:46Speaker 2: to be a given if you're going to be a
- 6:47Speaker 2: winning program. Like it's no one invented culture, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: Like I get a kick out of some of these
- 6:54Speaker 2: coaches to say, once they buy into my culture, no
- 6:57Speaker 2: one invented culture. You either you do things the right
- 7:00Speaker 2: way or you don't. And fortunately we've had a lot
- 7:04Speaker 2: of kids here that do things the right way because
- 7:07Speaker 2: they're here for the right reasons. And I think it's
- 7:13Speaker 2: evident really in all of programs at Yukon. You know,
- 7:17Speaker 2: if you look at Jim Calhoun's programs, or Geno's programs,
- 7:20Speaker 2: or Danny Hurley's programs, or Jim Pender's or Nancy Stevens,
- 7:24Speaker 2: and you can go right down the list. When Ray
- 7:26Speaker 2: Reid was here and now I see and BONDI doing it.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Things just get done the right way. There's a Yukon
- 7:34Speaker 2: way that you do things, and you know we all
- 7:38Speaker 2: have to adhere to that, you know, I mean, Chris
- 7:41Speaker 2: McKenzie's doing it with our women's program. So Jake's just
- 7:45Speaker 2: a kid who came in here and as a Connecticut kid,
- 7:49Speaker 2: I know Yukon's important to him. It means a lot
- 7:52Speaker 2: to him and he's going to do things the right way.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Awesome coach. Thank you, Daniel. Go ahead.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Just since we're not going to get you again until
- 8:08Speaker 5: or before you play stone Hill. David was your predecessor
- 8:13Speaker 5: as an interm here at Yukon. How well do you
- 8:16Speaker 5: know him and did you talk with him at all
- 8:18Speaker 5: when you were taking over?
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah? I knew him, you know very well. We're going
- 8:25Speaker 2: back to god. He's assistant at Providence to start, I
- 8:29Speaker 2: think right away, and then I know I went out
- 8:31Speaker 2: to Lake State with Scotti Borick for a while and
- 8:34Speaker 2: then he came back to Providence, I believe. But I've
- 8:37Speaker 2: known him on the recruiting trails for years.
- 8:41Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:41Speaker 2: When I did get the job, I did talk to him,
- 8:43Speaker 2: you know, and he did give me a little bit
- 8:45Speaker 2: of insight. And then he got you know, the job
- 8:49Speaker 2: at holy Cross and went back to Providence again and
- 8:52Speaker 2: now he's at stone Hill. But he's a very meticulous,
- 8:56Speaker 2: detailed coach. I've had a chance to watch stone Hill
- 9:00Speaker 2: play because we've played Northeastern and they played Northeastern and
- 9:03Speaker 2: they played they played someone else that we were playing
- 9:06Speaker 2: I can't remember. So I've watched your team play a
- 9:08Speaker 2: couple of times, and you know, they are extremely disciplined,
- 9:16Speaker 2: you know, methodical about the way they play. They don't
- 9:19Speaker 2: beat themselves and it's kind of how David coaches. And
- 9:24Speaker 2: you know, I'm not We got in New Hampshire first
- 9:27Speaker 2: this weekend, but you know, I think you'll have a
- 9:32Speaker 2: chance to ask me about Stonehill on Monday.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Dan, Well, just less about their team, but just how
- 9:42Speaker 5: they end up on the schedule, and is it are
- 9:45Speaker 5: you going to be going to play them next year
- 9:47Speaker 5: or is this just a one off.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Well, Brian Regolo, who played for US, is one of
- 9:52Speaker 2: their assistants as well, and you know, we needed one
- 9:56Speaker 2: game and they needed a game, so it worked out.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And yeah, I'd love to play them in the future. Sure,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and I will go there. I think if they're building
- 10:03Speaker 2: a new rink, and once they build a new rink,
- 10:06Speaker 2: we'd be happy to go there.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Thanks, Randy, go ahead.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Thank you, Colin more than cav Good morning. How are you, Randy,
- 10:16Speaker 2: I'm great, I'm great, Thank you.
- 10:18Speaker 6: I want to ask you about your defense as far
- 10:21Speaker 6: as your attack. You've got four on the blue line
- 10:25Speaker 6: that have four points this year, and I know at
- 10:27Speaker 6: the beginning of the year you said it would bet
- 10:30Speaker 6: you want all five guys, you know, on the attack
- 10:33Speaker 6: in the ozone. How would you assess what the defense
- 10:37Speaker 6: has brought to your offense this year?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're doing a great job. I think
- 10:40Speaker 2: Tyler does a fantastic job with our defenseman, you know,
- 10:44Speaker 2: first and foremost, I want them to defend. That's why
- 10:48Speaker 2: they called defenseman. So that's going to be number one.
- 10:52Speaker 2: But yeah, we want to have an attack that brings
- 10:57Speaker 2: all five people into it. And one of the things
- 10:59Speaker 2: I think that is really unique about our team. As
- 11:03Speaker 2: you know, our leading scorer has eight points, but we
- 11:06Speaker 2: have fifteen players within four points of that, so that's
- 11:11Speaker 2: a lot of balance scoring and that's the type of
- 11:13Speaker 2: team I want to coach. I think that when you have,
- 11:17Speaker 2: you know, a one line team that you have to
- 11:19Speaker 2: rely on for scoring, you know, some nights they're not
- 11:23Speaker 2: going to have it and you might struggle. On our
- 11:26Speaker 2: team the other night against Northeastern and that comeback, we
- 11:30Speaker 2: got goals from each line in that in that comeback.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So it's something that we pride ourselves on and our
- 11:38Speaker 2: defensemen are also part of that. So the more players
- 11:41Speaker 2: that we can get contributing I think the tougher team
- 11:45Speaker 2: we are to play, just the just the second and
- 11:49Speaker 2: final one for me.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Joey, of course, scores the game winner in overtime back
- 11:54Speaker 6: in there to Zay and Scott they were a couple
- 11:58Speaker 6: of weeks ago, got back in there and score big goals.
- 12:01Speaker 6: When a guy you know gets back in the lineup
- 12:04Speaker 6: and scores big what does that do for everybody? Because
- 12:07Speaker 6: you could kind of see your team seems to really
- 12:11Speaker 6: get behind those guys all the more when they when
- 12:14Speaker 6: they pot a big one.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's always great for them and coming
- 12:18Speaker 2: back and their confidence. You know. I told this story
- 12:22Speaker 2: the other night on the radio show. I didn't think
- 12:24Speaker 2: Joey was playing very well in the game. I just
- 12:26Speaker 2: wasn't that he wasn't playing well. I just thought it
- 12:29Speaker 2: was tough, like he had n't really practiced or played
- 12:32Speaker 2: in a week, and he looked a little tentative, and
- 12:35Speaker 2: I almost didn't play him in overtime. We debated it
- 12:39Speaker 2: on whether we were going to play him, and then
- 12:43Speaker 2: Tyler Helton had sent me a story about Nick Saban
- 12:46Speaker 2: saying the first coaching lesson he ever learned was it's
- 12:49Speaker 2: not about the play you call it's about making sure
- 12:52Speaker 2: it goes to the right player. And you know, I
- 12:56Speaker 2: thought about that and I said, how the hell can
- 12:57Speaker 2: I keep a thirty goal scorer on the bench in overtime?
- 13:00Speaker 2: So luckily I listened to my assistance and it was
- 13:07Speaker 2: you know, he wound up winning it for us.
- 13:10Speaker 6: Thank you, We'll see you Friday.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Great Elaine to go ahead morning.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Coach with pert of all, what is the difference do
- 13:20Speaker 4: you think that's led him to have his breakthrough recently?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Jake Percival, Yeah, I don't think anything. I think he's
- 13:28Speaker 2: been playing a solid brand of hockey the whole time,
- 13:31Speaker 2: and in this sport, I don't care who you are,
- 13:36Speaker 2: you're going to go through I don't even want to
- 13:39Speaker 2: call it slumps. I don't think that's the proper word.
- 13:42Speaker 2: It's just hard to score goals. And you might go
- 13:45Speaker 2: through you know, three, four, five games without scoring a goal.
- 13:50Speaker 2: That doesn't mean you don't have an impact on the game.
- 13:53Speaker 2: One of the greatest players I ever coached was Brian Gionta,
- 13:56Speaker 2: who scored more goals than any player I ever coached
- 13:59Speaker 2: in college hockey. I think one hundred and twenty goals
- 14:01Speaker 2: in four years when we won the national title in
- 14:05Speaker 2: OH one. Through the national tournament, he didn't have one
- 14:08Speaker 2: goal in three games, not one and we won a
- 14:11Speaker 2: national tournament and he was our most important player because
- 14:15Speaker 2: the impact he had on the game in so many
- 14:16Speaker 2: different areas helped us achieve the goal of winning a
- 14:21Speaker 2: national title. Jake Percival has such an impact on the game,
- 14:25Speaker 2: whether he's scoring or not. Last week he was rewarded
- 14:28Speaker 2: and that was great. You know, he went to the net,
- 14:30Speaker 2: he got deflections, but some of those definc deflections that
- 14:34Speaker 2: he scored on last week get saved sometimes that does
- 14:37Speaker 2: you know, that doesn't mean he's playing poorly. So I
- 14:42Speaker 2: think he's been playing very consistently from day one and
- 14:45Speaker 2: last week it was great he got rewarded.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Thank you. I have another one coming off of a weekend sweep.
- 14:52Speaker 4: What are some things that you've been working on that
- 14:54Speaker 4: can benefit you guys going into this weekend versus and.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Each Well, we need to work on a lot of areas.
- 14:59Speaker 2: I think we continue to need to work on our
- 15:02Speaker 2: special teams. I thought they were solid last week, but
- 15:06Speaker 2: I don't think they're at the level where we're capable
- 15:08Speaker 2: of playing. I think we need to continue to work
- 15:12Speaker 2: on our offensive zone play and you know, creating multiple
- 15:18Speaker 2: shots shifts. I think that's what wears teams down and
- 15:21Speaker 2: get you goals. I think we've got to continue to
- 15:24Speaker 2: work on our our communication between our f three and
- 15:30Speaker 2: our defense so we're not giving up odd man rushes.
- 15:33Speaker 2: So there's still a lot of aspects of our game
- 15:36Speaker 2: that we need to retool and get better at.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Thank you, coach, sure, Calvin, go ahead, Good morning, coach?
- 15:46Speaker 2: Are you good morning, Calvin? How are you good?
- 15:49Speaker 1: Myself? Pete and Elena are the broadcast team on Friday night?
- 15:52Speaker 1: At you and h right, A couple of questions for you.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Kind of touched on this earlier, but you return eight
- 15:59Speaker 1: of your nine to point getters from last season is
- 16:01Speaker 1: kind of like an anomaly in college hockey in twenty
- 16:04Speaker 1: twenty five. How much has that helped your guys help
- 16:07Speaker 1: your team here early in the season.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Wow, tremendous. I mean, we had a tough schedule. We
- 16:12Speaker 2: opened up, you know at Colorado College, Ohio State, and
- 16:16Speaker 2: bu I mean all ranked teams last week. It's you know,
- 16:22Speaker 2: it was a tough schedule and if we didn't have
- 16:24Speaker 2: that type of experience, it could have been crippling. To
- 16:27Speaker 2: be honest with you, But because we had that type
- 16:30Speaker 2: of experience coming back, we were able to play really
- 16:34Speaker 2: well in those games and go three and three in
- 16:36Speaker 2: those six games, So I think that was important, you know.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And then we couple followed it with Providence, who was
- 16:43Speaker 2: a really good team, and Northeastern was seven and one.
- 16:45Speaker 2: So it's been a tough schedule to start and we've survived.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I think that tough schedule and a lot of it
- 16:52Speaker 2: has to do with the experience that we brought back.
- 16:56Speaker 1: You mentioned the splits in there, but last weekend you
- 16:58Speaker 1: got your first weekend sweep over Northeastern. How big was
- 17:01Speaker 1: it for your team to get too in the win
- 17:03Speaker 1: column in one weekend?
- 17:05Speaker 2: It was I think it was, you know, important for sure.
- 17:10Speaker 2: I tried to let the players know that, you know,
- 17:15Speaker 2: one weekend doesn't make a breaker season, so you have
- 17:18Speaker 2: to stay just really focused on one game at a time.
- 17:22Speaker 2: It's like, we're not thinking about sweeping New Hampshire. We're
- 17:24Speaker 2: thinking about playing really well Friday night, Like that's where
- 17:28Speaker 2: our mindset has to be. But you know, when the
- 17:32Speaker 2: weekend ends, Calvin, yeah, we're pretty excited about this week.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You might not like this next question then, because you're
- 17:38Speaker 1: focused on one game at a time, but you guys
- 17:40Speaker 1: are about to enter a stretch of three games in
- 17:42Speaker 1: five days, five games and nine days before the break.
- 17:45Speaker 1: How important is is a strong finish to the first
- 17:48Speaker 1: half of your season.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's always important, you know, but it does Like
- 17:55Speaker 2: I said, it's not going to the first half of
- 17:58Speaker 2: the season. You can't win any trophies. You can make
- 18:02Speaker 2: it really hard to win trophies if you don't play well,
- 18:06Speaker 2: but you want to play well kind of figure out
- 18:10Speaker 2: the identity of your team and put yourself in position
- 18:13Speaker 2: to win trophies in the second half of the season.
- 18:17Speaker 2: So that's why it's important. But I believe last year,
- 18:19Speaker 2: I believe we were five hundred when we got into
- 18:23Speaker 2: Christmas break. We're very close to it, somewhere near there.
- 18:26Speaker 2: So it's again, we're just focused on Friday night because
- 18:32Speaker 2: I know this in this league, if you start looking three,
- 18:36Speaker 2: four or five games ahead, you're just gonna overwhelm yourself
- 18:39Speaker 2: and you're not going to play very well. So we're
- 18:42Speaker 2: just focused on playing really well up at the WIT
- 18:44Speaker 2: on Friday night.
- 18:46Speaker 1: We can look at you know, your guys's box scorers
- 18:50Speaker 1: and lotips and see Joe in the scoring that he provides.
- 18:53Speaker 1: But who on your team do you feel like goes
- 18:55Speaker 1: under the radar and deserves more recognition for what they
- 18:59Speaker 1: do to help you guys win?
- 19:01Speaker 2: Oh well, I mean look at Taber Heath slip. If
- 19:05Speaker 2: you look at our senior class like you look at
- 19:07Speaker 2: Taber Heath slip, you look at Jake Percival, you look
- 19:11Speaker 2: at Tristan Frasier. This year, Houston Cartman has been dressing
- 19:15Speaker 2: every game for us, pretty much up front, providing when
- 19:18Speaker 2: he's on the ice. He's played very well, but he
- 19:20Speaker 2: provides an incredible leadership on the bench. Tom Sinio, that
- 19:25Speaker 2: whole senior class, Tyler Muslik, that senior class has been
- 19:31Speaker 2: They don't get a lot of accolades and they're just
- 19:35Speaker 2: basically the heartbeat of our team.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Last one for me has has there been an underclassman
- 19:42Speaker 1: who has surprised you or impressed you here early in
- 19:44Speaker 1: the season.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Not really. You know a lot of people will point
- 19:51Speaker 2: to Mike Murtagg, but it doesn't surprise me because I
- 19:55Speaker 2: watched him last year in practice and we had such
- 19:57Speaker 2: a good team last year. He probably didn't get the
- 20:00Speaker 2: minutes in playing time that he deserved. Uh I shouldn't
- 20:05Speaker 2: you know? There was just really we had some really
- 20:07Speaker 2: good players that were ahead of him. But this year
- 20:10Speaker 2: you're seeing the impact he can bring on a nightly
- 20:13Speaker 2: basis and it's been fun to watch him play.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Awesome, coach, thanks so much.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Sure, awesome, well, coach, thanks for joining us. Good luck
- 20:23Speaker 3: this weekend.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Okay, guys, have a great day. Thank you, Thank you.
