- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. Great to have your company on
- 0:15this Monday, the 3rd of March, where we are going to be
- 0:19tackling a significant reading. This is the chapter that we
- 0:23covered today, where the northern nation of Israel is
- 0:27destroyed. The Assyrian emperor will come
- 0:31and he will take away this people group from their
- 0:35homeland. And when we think about exile,
- 0:39there's a couple of different models, and we'll get to the
- 0:41Babylonian model later as as Judah goes into exile.
- 0:45But today, when they say they exiled the people of Israel,
- 0:51what that means is they inserted a great hook through the
- 0:55underside of their jaw and out their mouth, attached to the
- 0:58long rope where every one of the people was attached so there's
- 1:01no escape. And they took them, LED them by
- 1:04that rope out of their nation, out of their land, and then
- 1:09scattered them individually across the entire empire.
- 1:13Which means when people settled in their new areas, they lost
- 1:17their language, they lost their culture, they lost their
- 1:20identity, and they became part of the Assyrian melange that
- 1:26that combination of all the different nations.
- 1:29And so when we hear today about this exile, it really is the
- 1:33destruction and loss of the entire northern Kingdom of
- 1:37Israel. And then of course, the author
- 1:39of Second Kings will go on to describe why this happened
- 1:43because of what the Israelites have done for countless
- 1:45generations. So it's a brutal reading with a
- 1:48brutal outcome. But this is what happened
- 1:51friends, and so that is what we will read today.
- 1:54Buckle yourselves in as we read together.
- 1:57Second Kings chapter 17. Hoshaya, son of Elah, began to
- 2:12rule over Israel in the 12th year of King Ahaz's reign of
- 2:16Judah. He reigned in Samarian 9 years.
- 2:20He did what was evil in the Lord's sight, but not to the
- 2:23same extent as the kings of Israel who ruled before him.
- 2:28King Shalmanazar of Assyria attacked King Hoshaya, so
- 2:32Hoshaya was forced to pay heavy tribute to Assyria.
- 2:37But Hoshaya stopped paying the annual tribute and conspired
- 2:40against the king of Assyria by asking King so of Egypt to help
- 2:45him shake free of Assyria's power.
- 2:48When the king of Assyria discovered this treachery, he
- 2:51seized Hoshaya and put him in prison.
- 2:55Then the king of Assyria invaded the entire land, and for three
- 3:00years he besieged the city of Samaria.
- 3:04Finally, in the ninth year of King Hoshaya's reign, Samaria
- 3:08fell and the people of Israel were exiled to Assyria.
- 3:14They settled in colonies in Hala, along the banks of the
- 3:18Hebor River, in Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.
- 3:23This disaster came upon the people of Israel because they
- 3:27worshipped other gods. They sinned against the Lord
- 3:31their God, who had brought them safely out of Egypt and had
- 3:34rescued them from the power of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.
- 3:38They had followed the practises of the Pagan nations the Lord
- 3:41had driven from the land ahead of them, as well as the
- 3:45practises the kings of Israel had introduced.
- 3:48The people of Israel had also secretly done many things that
- 3:52were not pleasing to the Lord their God.
- 3:55They built Pagan shrines for themselves in all their towns,
- 3:59from the smallest outpost to the largest walled city.
- 4:03They set up sacred pillars and asherah poles at the top of
- 4:06every hill and under every green tree.
- 4:10They offered sacrifices on all the hilltops.
- 4:12Just like the nations the Lord had driven from the land ahead
- 4:16of them. So the people of Israel had done
- 4:19many evil things, arousing the Lord's anger.
- 4:22Yes, they worshipped idols, despite the Lord's specific and
- 4:27repeated warnings. Again and again the Lord had
- 4:31sent His prophets and seers to warn both Israel and Judah.
- 4:36Turn from all your evil ways. Obey My commands and decrees,
- 4:41the entire law that I commanded your ancestors to obey, and that
- 4:45I gave you through my servants, the prophets.
- 4:49But the Israelites would not listen.
- 4:52They were as stubborn as their ancestors who had refused to
- 4:55believe in the Lord their God. They rejected His decrees and
- 4:59the covenant He had made with their ancestors, and they
- 5:03despised all his warnings. They worshipped worthless idols,
- 5:08so they became worthless themselves.
- 5:11They followed the examples of the nations around them,
- 5:14disobeying the Lord's command not to imitate them.
- 5:19They rejected all the commands of the Lord their God and made
- 5:23two calves from metal. They set up an asherah pole and
- 5:27worshipped Baal and all the forces of heaven.
- 5:30They even sacrificed their own sons and daughters in the fire.
- 5:35They consulted fortune tellers and practised sorcery and sold
- 5:39to themselves to evil, arousing the Lord's anger.
- 5:44Because the Lord was very angry with Israel, He swept them away
- 5:48from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained
- 5:51in the land. But even the people of Judah
- 5:54refused to obey the commands of the Lord their God, for they
- 5:58followed the evil practises that Israel had introduced.
- 6:01The Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel.
- 6:05He punished them by handing them over to their attackers until he
- 6:09had banished Israel from his presence.
- 6:14For when the Lord tore Israel away from the Kingdom of David,
- 6:17they chose Jeroboam son of Nebat as their king.
- 6:21But Jeroboam drew Israel away from following the Lord and made
- 6:26them commit a great sin. And the people of Israel
- 6:30persisted in all the evil ways of Jeroboam.
- 6:34They did not return from these sins until the Lord finally
- 6:38swept them away from His presence, just as all his
- 6:42prophets had warned. So Israel was exiled from their
- 6:46land to Assyria, where they remained to this day.
- 6:52The king of Assyria transported groups of people from Babylon,
- 6:57Kutha, Ava, Hamath, and Sefavaim and resettled them in the towns
- 7:02of Samaria, replacing the people of Israel.
- 7:05They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns.
- 7:09But since these foreign settlers did not worship the Lord when
- 7:12they first arrived, the Lord sent lions among them, which
- 7:16killed some of them. So a message was sent to the
- 7:20king of Assyria. The people you have sent to live
- 7:23in the towns of Samaria do not know the religious customs of
- 7:26the God of the land. He has sent lines among them to
- 7:29destroy them because they have not worshipped him correctly.
- 7:33The king of Assyria then commanded send one of the exiled
- 7:37priests back to Samaria, let him live there, and teach the new
- 7:41residents the religious customs of the God of the land.
- 7:45So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria
- 7:48returned to Bethel and taught the new residents how to worship
- 7:52the Lord. But these various groups of
- 7:55foreigners also continued to worship their own gods in town
- 7:59after town where they lived. They placed their idols at the
- 8:03Pagan shrines that the people of Samaria had built.
- 8:07Those from Babylon worshipped idols of their God Sukhov
- 8:10Benoth. Those from Kutha worship their
- 8:14God Nergal, those from Hamath worshipped Ashima, the Avites
- 8:20worshipped their gods Nibaz and Tartak, and the people from
- 8:25Sefavaim even burned their own children as sacrifices to their
- 8:29gods Adramalek and Anna Malek. These new residents worshipped
- 8:35the Lord, but they also appointed from among themselves
- 8:39all sorts of people as priests to offer sacrifices at their
- 8:43places of worship. And though they worshipped the
- 8:46Lord, they continued to follow their own gods according to the
- 8:49religious customs of the nations from which they came.
- 8:53And this is still going on today.
- 8:55They continue to follow their former practises.
- 8:58Instead of truly worshipping the Lord and obeying the decrees,
- 9:02regulations, instructions and commands, He gave the
- 9:06descendants of Jacob, whose name he changed to Israel.
- 9:10For the Lord had made a covenant with the descendants of Jacob
- 9:13and commanded them. Do not worship any other gods,
- 9:18or bow before them, or serve them, or offer sacrifices to
- 9:21them, but worship only the Lord who brought you out of Egypt
- 9:27with great strength and a powerful arm.
- 9:30Bow down to him alone, and offer sacrifices only to Him.
- 9:35Be careful at all times to obey the decrees, regulations,
- 9:40instructions and commands that He wrote for you.
- 9:43You must not worship other gods. Do not forget the covenant I
- 9:48made with you, and do not worship other gods.
- 9:52You must worship only the Lord, your God.
- 9:55He is the one who will rescue you from all your enemies.
- 10:01But the people would not listen and continued to follow their
- 10:04former practises. So while these new residents
- 10:07worship the Lord, they also worship their idols, and to this
- 10:11day their descendants do the same.
- 10:23Oh Lord, this is hard for us to hear that finally after
- 10:27generation after generation after generation of
- 10:30disobedience, the consequences of their choices finally come
- 10:35home and take away the nation of Israel into exile into into
- 10:41being lost to the pages of history.
- 10:45My Lord, we know that we are no better that our hearts, our
- 10:50hearts fall before other things other than you, and we struggle
- 10:55to continually and consistently worship You alone above all
- 10:59else. But Father, you have given us
- 11:03Jesus, that no matter how poor we are at following you, Jesus
- 11:09sacrifice, his death in our place, and his resurrection
- 11:15opens the way for us to be with you.
- 11:16Oh, thank you. Thank you for this new covenant,
- 11:20this new way of being that we rest in your arms covered in the
- 11:25blood of Jesus. We are so grateful for this
- 11:28incredible deal that you offer us.
- 11:31And so we worship you, our loving, forgiving God.
- 11:36And thank you that we have a place eternally in your family.
- 11:40Now we pray all of this in the saving name of Jesus, Amen.
