- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37And those are the three things that I think about even today.
- 0:40Well, I know who I believe. I believe the author of the true
- 0:45Word of God. I believe what's in here.
- 0:49Not some of it. All of it, all of it.
- 0:54No one can tell me. Well, some of these things
- 0:56aren't necessarily true because they're not for today.
- 0:58No, no, no, you can't tell me that all of this is God's word.
- 1:02And if it's all God's Word, then it's all truth that.
- 1:06Sure is a simple way to look at the Bible.
- 1:09If the Bible is the word of God, then it's all truth.
- 1:13It's as simple as that. Today, Pastor Lewis shows us
- 1:17that some within the church are approaching the Word of God like
- 1:21it's the local Chinese buffet. I'll take a little of this and a
- 1:24little of that, but I don't want any of that.
- 1:27The Bible isn't meant to be approached like a buffet.
- 1:31You must take the entirety of the Word of God into your very
- 1:35person. It is all meant for your good.
- 1:39Now here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of First Timothy, chapter
- 1:42one with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:46So we aren't saved because we do good things, say, because we
- 1:49believe in him who is good. And then is the last I'm just
- 1:52going to mention here is this prosperity gospel.
- 1:55Prosperity gospel teaches that we are saved to be rich, you're
- 1:58saved to be happy, you're saved to be healthy and whole, that if
- 2:01we give our lives to Jesus, then we will live a blessed,
- 2:05prosperous and happy life. But in order to do that, you got
- 2:09to give, you got to plant some seeds.
- 2:12You know, you got to give, you know, you have to, you have to
- 2:15give to the church and then you can receive these, these things
- 2:20that Jesus can offer once we give to him first.
- 2:22Well, Jesus already died for us. There's really nothing we can do
- 2:25for him, right? He already died for us.
- 2:27It's all done. It's finished.
- 2:29He said it on the cross, it's finished.
- 2:31So we know that that's not a a true gospel.
- 2:36So we have to be careful of some of the doctrines that can make
- 2:40their way into the church. But Paul said that these
- 2:43doctrines, these doctrines, these other doctrines, these
- 2:46fables, which are basically just myths, they're untrue.
- 2:49You know, these things along with endless genealogies.
- 2:52And what he means here is that there are people who are
- 2:54actually trying to achieve righteousness through their
- 2:57lineage based on who they're related to.
- 3:02You know, this is my lineage. And you heard the Pharisees do
- 3:04it. We're of Abraham, we're
- 3:06Abraham's seed. Jesus said before Abraham was I
- 3:10am, so it has nothing to do with who I'm related to.
- 3:16My mother could be saved. If I'm living like the devil,
- 3:19I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be saved unless I repent and
- 3:22trust in Jesus Christ for my salvation.
- 3:24We all got to have that relationship with Him, not just
- 3:27because we're related to somebody who does.
- 3:31And they were trusted in some of these genealogies.
- 3:33And these things weren't doing nothing but causing disputes and
- 3:36speculations. But Paul said these things don't
- 3:40edify. You see, they can't change our
- 3:42lives. These new doctrines can't change
- 3:45our lives. Or we can make you feel good for
- 3:47a while because they do address your flesh.
- 3:49They go right to your flesh. But it does nothing for the
- 3:52spirit man. So the spirit man doesn't grow.
- 3:55We don't become more mature in the Lord listening to strange
- 3:59doctrines. The only thing that causes us to
- 4:02grow is the word of truth, the gospel of truth.
- 4:09Jesus said sanctify them by your truth, not by these other
- 4:14gospels. Sanctify them by your truth.
- 4:17Your word is truth. So we're sanctified by the truth
- 4:23of the gospel of Jesus Christ. So then we go on to verse 5 and
- 4:26it says now the purpose of the commandment is love.
- 4:31So Paul says, look, that other gospel were dumped, other things
- 4:34that they're teaching those false teachings.
- 4:36It's not doing anything but bringing speculation, disputes,
- 4:40causing us to go into more sin, causing people to go into more
- 4:43sin. It's not doing anything for our
- 4:46hearts. It's not changing us.
- 4:48It doesn't do anything for us. But the purpose of the
- 4:51commandment, that means the true doctrine is love.
- 4:56The gospel is a love message. It's a love message for God.
- 5:02So love the world He gave his only begotten Son.
- 5:06Romans 5 and 8 says that he demonstrates his love toward us
- 5:10and that why we were yet sinners.
- 5:12He died for us. The gospel is a love message.
- 5:16It gives us a love message. It gives us love.
- 5:19Jesus say, you'll know them, you'll know them by their love
- 5:22for one another, You'll know that they are my disciples by
- 5:25the way that they love one another.
- 5:28Now the purpose of the commandment is love, and it's
- 5:30love from a pure heart, which means that a love, a heart
- 5:34that's untainted, a heart that's uncorrupted by worldliness.
- 5:39So it's a pure heart. And we know that it's the pure
- 5:42that sees God, right? I mean, when we look at the
- 5:45beatitudes, blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see
- 5:49God, they shall see God, the pure in heart.
- 5:53So it's love out of a pure heart.
- 5:54It's also love from a good conscience.
- 5:57You see, the Word of God, the gospel doesn't give, it doesn't
- 5:59teach condemnation, it doesn't teach judgment and condemnation
- 6:03and all those kind of things. You don't feel condemned.
- 6:06Paul said There is therefore no condemnation to them who walk
- 6:10not after the flesh but after the Spirit.
- 6:13There is no condemnation. We don't have to feel condemned
- 6:16when we read the gospel. The law makes us feel condemned
- 6:20or when people make you feel like you don't measure up, that
- 6:23causes condemnation. And Paul says here it's it's
- 6:26it's love with a good conscience.
- 6:28Our conscience is clear. If I do wrong, I repent and I'm
- 6:33back in fellowship with God. I don't have to carry around
- 6:35condemnation and feel like I've fallen out of love with God
- 6:39because I did something wrong. God said there's nothing that
- 6:44can separate us from his love. And then it says here and from a
- 6:47sincere faith, the sincere faith, not a hypocritical faith,
- 6:52not someone living double lives, not someone acting like they're
- 6:55keeping the law and putting all this bondage on other people to
- 6:57keep it and they can't do it themselves.
- 7:01That's a hypocritical law. That's a hypocritical gospel.
- 7:04That's not what this love is coming from.
- 7:06It's a sincere gospel. We sincerely love the Lord.
- 7:11We are sincere before Him, even when we repent.
- 7:14Lord, I blew it. I messed up, please forgive me.
- 7:19I desire to do the right thing, but sometimes I don't.
- 7:23Lord, please forgive me. That's a sincere heart.
- 7:27A sincere heart. And then he goes on to verse 5,
- 7:30it says from which some having strayed meaning from the sincere
- 7:34faith or the word of God, some having strayed, they they've
- 7:39turned away from it and having turned aside to idle talk, idle
- 7:44talk, vain talk, empty talk. It doesn't go anywhere.
- 7:48It's circular, it's speculation. Majoring on the minors is
- 7:53basically what that is. It's idle talk, verse 7 says,
- 7:56designed to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what
- 8:00they say nor the things which they affirm.
- 8:04They don't even understand what they truly believe in.
- 8:07They don't understand exactly what they're standing on.
- 8:11They don't have a real good understanding of it, and it
- 8:13can't. If, if it's not truth, then it's
- 8:16always changing. Then it's always changing.
- 8:20So you don't really know what you're standing on.
- 8:23You don't really know what you're standing on.
- 8:24When I was, when we were, when we were younger, when we first
- 8:27got saved, our mentor used to tell us, he said, look, you need
- 8:30to know three things. You need to know three things
- 8:33about your salvation. First of all, you need to know
- 8:36who you believe. Secondly, you need to know what
- 8:41you believe. And thirdly, you need to know
- 8:45why you believe it. And those are the three things
- 8:49that I think about even today. Well, I know who I believe.
- 8:54I believe the author of the true Word of God.
- 8:58I believe what's in here. Not some of it, all of it, all
- 9:04of it. No one can tell me.
- 9:06Well, some of these things aren't necessarily true because
- 9:08they're not for today. No, no, no, you can't tell me
- 9:10that all of this is God's word. And if it's all God's Word, then
- 9:15it's all truth. It's all truth.
- 9:18So that's who I believe. What do I believe?
- 9:21I believe that Jesus Christ is the true Son of God.
- 9:23I believe he came and he died for my sins and your sins.
- 9:28I believe that he was buried, and I believe that on the third
- 9:31day he arose. And I believe that we have
- 9:35eternal life in Him. For those who believe on him,
- 9:39that's what I believe. And they say, well, why do you
- 9:43believe it? Because God said it.
- 9:46For me, it's very simple. I believe because God said I'll
- 9:48have to give a dissertation while I believe it.
- 9:50God said it. Now we hear people say God said
- 9:55it, I believe it. That settles it.
- 10:00I used to say that too. I don't say that no more because
- 10:03it doesn't matter whether I believe it or not.
- 10:05It's still true. So the word, so it should be.
- 10:08God said it, and that settles it.
- 10:11There's nothing in between my believing it or not, my
- 10:15believing it or not believing it.
- 10:16Doesn't make it any less true or any more true.
- 10:21And we need to understand that as a community, as a society,
- 10:24people think that because they don't believe something that
- 10:26they read in the word of God, then it's not necessarily true
- 10:30because it doesn't make sense to them.
- 10:32Sorry. Just because it doesn't make
- 10:34sense to you doesn't mean it's not true.
- 10:36It's true anyway. 2 + 2 equal 4. If I have 4 beads sitting up
- 10:42here, I don't care what you do with it.
- 10:44If I put these two over here together with this two over here
- 10:47and put them together, I'm going to have 4 beads.
- 10:50Whether I believe it's true or not.
- 10:52It's 4B sitting on my table. God's word is true whether we
- 10:56believe it or not. So that's why I believe it,
- 10:59because God said it. So then he goes on here and he
- 11:03says in verse 8. So apparently what we learn is
- 11:09that this problem that they had with bringing with the strange
- 11:12doctrines, it had to do something with the law.
- 11:15They were misinterpreting the law or misusing the law.
- 11:20And we know that Judaizers were coming into different places and
- 11:23that's what they were doing. They were misusing the law.
- 11:26Judaizers were saying, yeah, it's Jesus Christ.
- 11:29Plus, OK, you know, you have to believe in Jesus Christ, but
- 11:32then you also have to get circumcised.
- 11:35You can believe in Jesus Christ, but you also have to keep the
- 11:37law of Moses. OK, That's Jesus Christ plus.
- 11:41There is no Jesus Christ plus. It's Jesus Christ.
- 11:44We're saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ
- 11:47alone. That's it.
- 11:48There is no Jesus plus. But they must have thought that
- 11:51there was a Jesus plus, so Paul says.
- 11:54But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully.
- 12:00When the law is used the correct way for what it's intended for,
- 12:04the law is good. In evangelism, people who
- 12:08understand the law and are able to share the law in a way where
- 12:14people understand there's that balance between law and grace.
- 12:18The law is good. The law is good.
- 12:20The purpose of the law, and this is what we're going into now,
- 12:23the purpose of the law is to point out our sin.
- 12:28That's what the law is for. It was to point out our sin.
- 12:32How do I know that? Well, let's look at a couple of
- 12:34verses that tells us that. How about we do that?
- 12:36Let's go to Galatians first. Now let's go to Romans.
- 12:40Go to Romans first. We'll do it in order.
- 12:42Go to Romans first. Romans chapter 3, right around
- 12:47the beginning of Romans, Romans chapter 3 verse 19 says, Now we
- 12:51know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under
- 12:55the law, that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may
- 13:00become guilty before God. Therefore, by the deeds of the
- 13:04law, no flesh will be justified in His sight.
- 13:08For by the law is the knowledge of sin, for by law is the
- 13:14knowledge of sin. The law simply points out our
- 13:20sins. And then let's go to go to
- 13:23Galatians. Let's go over to Galatians and
- 13:26go to chapter 3 in Galatians, and I'm going to start right
- 13:31here, verse 21. It says for if there had been a
- 13:34law given which could have given life by righteousness, for if
- 13:40there had been a law given which could have given life, OK, truly
- 13:46righteousness would have been by the law.
- 13:48But the Scripture has confirmed all under sin, that the promise
- 13:53by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
- 13:58But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law,
- 14:04kept for the faith which would come afterward be revealed.
- 14:08Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we
- 14:13might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are
- 14:17no longer under the tutor. So it came to point out our sin.
- 14:21It was not a remedy or a cure for our sins.
- 14:24So the law is like a thermometer.
- 14:28Laws like a thermometer. A thermometer can tell you
- 14:31you're sick, but it can't cure you.
- 14:35It tells you you're sick, but it doesn't cure you.
- 14:38A laws like that tells you just how sick we are, but there's no
- 14:42cure in the law itself. So let's let's go on.
- 14:46We know that the law cannot empower us to change.
- 14:49The law cannot be on the inside of us.
- 14:51The law is on the outside. It's the new covenant where God
- 14:53said, I'm going to put my law in your heart and I'm going to put
- 14:57it on your minds and your sins. I will remember no more.
- 15:01And that's because the law giver is now in each and every one of
- 15:05you and me. The law giver is in US.
- 15:09So all we do is submit to the Spirit that's in US, and that's
- 15:13how we walk in obedience to the Lord when we submit to the
- 15:17Spirit that's in US. So then we go on here in verse 9
- 15:21where it says now knowing this, that the law is not made for a
- 15:24righteous person but for the lawless.
- 15:27OK, So what I'm going to do now, I'm going to mention these
- 15:29violations and these first six violations that I mentioned are
- 15:34all going to fall under the 1st four of the 10 commandments.
- 15:40It's very interesting how Paul did this.
- 15:42He says here the law is for the lawless and the insubordinate.
- 15:45That means the disobedient or the rebellious is for the
- 15:49ungodly and for sinners and for the unholy and profane.
- 15:55OK, that's who the law. Those six, you look at those six
- 15:58things and they fall under the 1st 410 commandments.
- 16:03It's very interesting. Thou should have no other God
- 16:05before me. Thou should have no graven
- 16:07images. Thou should not take the Lord's
- 16:09name in vain. Thou should remember the Sabbath
- 16:13and keep it holy. All those things fall under
- 16:15these, these things that Paul just mentioned.
- 16:17So now we're going to go to the next 8, which are going to fall
- 16:21under the next. This might be complicated, might
- 16:23fall out of the next 5 of 610 commandments because he doesn't
- 16:29mention covetous here, which would have been the 10th
- 16:30command. We don't mention that one, but
- 16:32he does mention the first, that next five of the 10 commandments
- 16:36and I'll go through them. But he says here it says for
- 16:38murderers of fathers, murderers of mothers, that means you know
- 16:42your patricides and your matricides, people who kill
- 16:46their fathers and their mothers. You know the 10 commandments
- 16:48tells us that what, that we have to honor our fathers and our
- 16:51mothers. And then it says for manslayers,
- 16:5310 commandments said thou shalt not commit murder.
- 16:55So it falls under that. And for fornication and
- 16:58sodomites to commandments, they should not commit adultery.
- 17:02But these fall under sexual immorality.
- 17:07These fall under sexual immorality.
- 17:10But I also want to point out to you that since we're on the
- 17:13subject, I want to point out to you that he separated
- 17:16fornicators and sodomites, or in some versions it may read
- 17:21homosexuals. In some versions.
- 17:24He took the time to point that out because I believe He's
- 17:27letting us low. He's letting us know that being
- 17:30a homosexual is no less of a sin or no more of a sin than being a
- 17:37fornicator. Having sex outside of marriage
- 17:41with a woman is no less of a sin than two men having sex.
- 17:49It's all sinful to the Lord. It's abominable to the Lord.
- 17:53OK, but I also want to point this out because somebody might
- 17:56be thinking, but wait a minute. What if the two men are married?
- 18:01What if the two women are married?
- 18:04Is it still a sin? I have a resounding yes, it's
- 18:07still a sin. God does not acknowledge
- 18:11homosexual marriages, a man to man.
- 18:14God does not acknowledge that marriage.
- 18:16He does not acknowledge the marriage of two women.
- 18:19God does not acknowledge that. How do you know Lewis?
- 18:22Well, because back in Genesis when God was talking to Adam and
- 18:27Eve and He was talking about their marriage, he said for this
- 18:30reason, this is back in chapter 2, verse 24.
- 18:32You can check it out. He said for this reason shall a
- 18:35man leave his father and his mother and be joined to his
- 18:39wife? Under no circumstances is a wife
- 18:42ever identified as a man. A wife is a woman, and then if
- 18:47you go to Matthew chapter 19, verse 5, Jesus said the exact
- 18:52same thing. For this reason shall a man be
- 18:56joined together with his wife. For this reason he leaves his
- 19:00father and his mother, and he's joined together with his wife,
- 19:04and the two shall become one flesh.
- 19:08That's the institution of marriage.
- 19:10And I'm sorry, but the one who created the institution has the
- 19:13right to call what it is, in my opinion.
- 19:18I can't go into your house and I tell you what the rules of your
- 19:21house is going to be. You ain't going for that, nor
- 19:24can we do it with the institution of marriage.
- 19:28So let's go on. So then he says for kidnappers,
- 19:31some people believe that the Bible doesn't talk about
- 19:35slavery. For slavery.
- 19:37The Bible was doesn't doesn't mention anything about that.
- 19:39Well, here's one place that it does because it's kidnappers.
- 19:42He's talking about men, Steelers, men stealers, men who
- 19:47actually steal other men or women and force them into
- 19:51slavery. That's what this is talking
- 19:53about. And then he says for liars and
- 19:55for perjurers, I mean, all liars.
- 19:57And we know that all liars have their place in the lake of fire.
- 20:02But what's interesting, I looked up now, you know, the penalty
- 20:04for perjury is a pretty severe penalty.
- 20:06I mean, it's a, it's a third degree felony here in
- 20:08Pennsylvania. It's a pretty severe penalty,
- 20:11and the penalty, the punishment for it is like $15,000 in fines
- 20:16and up to seven years prison time.
- 20:19That's pretty severe. But that is nothing compared to
- 20:23what a unrepentant, unbelieving liar or perjurer is going to
- 20:28have to face when they face eternity in the lake of fire.
- 20:34It says for if a perjurus and if there is any other thing that is
- 20:39contrary to sound doctrine, well, maybe somebody is sitting
- 20:44here and thinking, well, I don't do none of those things.
- 20:47Just because it doesn't list, it doesn't mean this is an
- 20:50unexhausted list. OK, this is not everything, but
- 20:55he said he captures it at the bottom when he says in any other
- 20:59thing that is not contrary to sound doctrine.
- 21:04OK, so we're all lawbreakers, We've all broken the law.
- 21:08We all need the grace of Jesus Christ.
- 21:10We all need the love of Jesus Christ, and we all need the
- 21:12mercy of Jesus Christ. And thank God it's there.
- 21:15Amen. Thank God it's there.
- 21:18So to teach this, to try to teach this, if somebody tries to
- 21:21teach the law and use it as a way to keep you in bondage or
- 21:26use it as a way to control you or ever try to get you to think
- 21:32that the law is your way to righteousness or right standing
- 21:35with God, or that the law is the way to salvation, that is misuse
- 21:39of the law. That is misuse of the law.
- 21:44The law is there to point it out.
- 21:47This is sin. God's grace and His love and
- 21:52faith in Him is the way to salvation.
- 21:55Believing on Him, that's the way to salvation.
- 21:58It got to be balanced. Amen.
- 22:00And then of course, verse 11 says, according to the glorious
- 22:03gospel of the blessed God, that's the balance which was
- 22:08committed to my trust. I just want to close with this.
- 22:13Romans 10/4 says for Christ is the end of the law for
- 22:16righteousness for everyone or to everyone who believes.
- 22:22People try to use doctrine to do whatever it is that they wanted
- 22:25to do. They try to use it to control
- 22:27you. They try to use it to condemn.
- 22:29They try to use it to try to get you to think that you have to
- 22:33complete a bunch of do's and don'ts in order to be righteous
- 22:36or in order to be saved. But the Lord has come.
- 22:40Lord Jesus Christ has come for our salvation.
- 22:43He's already paid the penalty for it.
- 22:46He's already paid the penalty. And as I said before, we now
- 22:49have the Spirit of God living on the inside of us that all we
- 22:53have to do is yield to it, to Him.
- 22:56And He is the one that empowers us to live holy.
- 23:02He empowers us to change our lives.
- 23:04He empowers us to understand when we have violated the law of
- 23:09God and we repent and we turn from it and God is there with
- 23:12his arms open, just like we are with our children when they
- 23:15violate or one of our rules or they violate something in the
- 23:17household. We don't kick them out forever.
- 23:20We don't look at them haughty, but we invite them back when
- 23:23they say, mom, dad, I'm sorry. And they come and give you that
- 23:26hug around your waist. You melt.
- 23:30You melt and we serve a God who loves For us to acknowledge that
- 23:37we're in agreement with Him that we have sinned, but He also love
- 23:41it when we come back to Him and we admit that we're wrong and we
- 23:46repent and we are able to restore.
- 23:48He restores. Our fellowship with Him isn't
- 23:52awesome. What a plan.
- 23:54What a plan. Thank you for tuning in to
- 23:58Living Waters of Grace with Pastor Lewis Harold.
- 24:02We're currently in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:05Some of the things included in these New Testament letters from
- 24:09Paul are that the young and newly established Pastor Timothy
- 24:14was being encouraged to hold fast to what was true.
- 24:18He was challenged to confront and address the false teachers
- 24:22that were rising up. He was also reminded to accept
- 24:26his calling to the ministry with gratefulness and to address the
- 24:30happenings going on in the Ephesian church.
- 24:33Paul was imparting his experience and knowledge to the
- 24:37next generation. Timothy was receptive to
- 24:41learning and gleaning what he could from Paul's wisdom.
- 24:44This is how it should be in ministry across multiple
- 24:47generations. Those who have lived a little
- 24:50more life should be open to sharing their successes and also
- 24:55things they've learned along the way.
- 24:57That we're not a wind. The younger generations coming
- 25:00up can learn and appreciate much from those ahead of them, and
- 25:04perhaps avoid some of the same pitfalls that their mentors work
- 25:09through mentoring. It's a beautiful relationship
- 25:13when the hearts are in the right place to learn and grow.
- 25:17We trust that you're in a community where this is
- 25:20happening. Older ones providing advice and
- 25:23wisdom, and each side learning and growing from one another.
- 25:28This certainly was the case for Paul and Timothy as they were
- 25:31comrades for the sake of the gospel.
