- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything presented by first, like creating proven versatile
- 0:24Speaker 1: hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear for
- 0:28Speaker 1: every hunt. First like go farther, stay longer, your listeners
- 0:36Speaker 1: will have to bear with us for a minute. Uh,
- 0:38Speaker 1: cal do I want to tell a story about it
- 0:41Speaker 1: one of my college teachers, but it has to do
- 0:45Speaker 1: with your story you just told. Cal just shared a
- 0:47Speaker 1: story that involved a man unloading a tractor tire. Is
- 0:51Speaker 1: that fair? Yeah? Very fair. When I was in college,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I took black and white photography. One in black and
- 0:59Speaker 1: white photograph, you two. When I took black and white
- 1:02Speaker 1: photography to the teacher had real world photography experience because
- 1:07Speaker 1: he had a job at one point in time documenting
- 1:10Speaker 1: insurance fraud. His greatest work accomplishment was he was working
- 1:17Speaker 1: a guy who was out on a permanent UH disability
- 1:21Speaker 1: with a back injury, and so he stakes out right
- 1:26Speaker 1: And it turns out that the man was a monster
- 1:28Speaker 1: truck enthusiast, and my teacher got images of him loading
- 1:35Speaker 1: and unloading an entire round of monster truck tires out
- 1:39Speaker 1: of the back of his truck. That is not good
- 1:41Speaker 1: for your back. And he would approach the tailgate and
- 1:44Speaker 1: he would grab he would bear hug the monster truck,
- 1:48Speaker 1: lock his fingers through the rim, and then lean back
- 1:56Speaker 1: in all the tires around. And that was that was
- 1:59Speaker 1: his Uh that was his greatest moment as an insurance
- 2:01Speaker 1: for aud photographer. Uh Phil, where that story? Yn? Uh Phil?
- 2:08Speaker 1: Can you can you play a breaking news sound? Okay?
- 2:17Speaker 1: As we're sitting down here, picture this. I'm in this.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I'm here in the studio. We're doing a little pre
- 2:21Speaker 1: show banter and I get a text message from my
- 2:24Speaker 1: friend guys U thirty nine minutes fresh. This is five
- 2:29Speaker 1: minutes ago. So what's that add up to? Forty four
- 2:33Speaker 1: minutes fresh? Okay? A massive squirrel bust. Thanks to a
- 2:40Speaker 1: concerned citizen, Missouri Department of Conservation Agent M d C.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Missouri Department of Conservation Conservation agents Brad Hadley and Eric
- 2:52Speaker 1: Long were able to make contact with a large group
- 2:54Speaker 1: of non residents squirrel hunters in and around Current River
- 2:59Speaker 1: conser of Asian Area sixteen non resident squirrel hunters. The
- 3:05Speaker 1: group of sixteen had been hunting for two days and
- 3:07Speaker 1: harvested four hundred and seventy one squirrels. Anything of that, Karen,
- 3:15Speaker 1: hundred fifty one over the over the possession limit. We
- 3:19Speaker 1: did the math. It's fifteen squirrels per day, but the
- 3:23Speaker 1: bag limits ten a day. How is ten a day
- 3:26Speaker 1: not enough for you? There are five over each. That
- 3:32Speaker 1: is a generous squirrel limit. I don't know what to say.
- 3:37Speaker 1: The picture is what state was this? Miss Missouri? The
- 3:42Speaker 1: the picture you'd think you were looking at. I initially
- 3:48Speaker 1: thought I was looking at someone who was dying in
- 3:50Speaker 1: wax and traps. On closer inspection, just because of who
- 3:53Speaker 1: it came from. On closer inspection, I would think I'm
- 3:57Speaker 1: looking at a bunch of like mink. But they're the
- 4:01Speaker 1: squirrels are all soaking wet. No, but they look like
- 4:05Speaker 1: they're like they don't have their hair on them, like
- 4:07Speaker 1: they've been I disagree. Those the tails are like pointy
- 4:12Speaker 1: one secondary, Joannie, I'm gonna hand it to you. I
- 4:16Speaker 1: have my own superphones. It looks like that kind of
- 4:19Speaker 1: like careless, like cat or dog. There's like, no, no,
- 4:22Speaker 1: they're just stopping wet for some reason. Oh they might
- 4:25Speaker 1: do that. Clay neew Camino the clay neew come deal
- 4:27Speaker 1: where you dun't come in a bucket and then skin them.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I didn't keeps hair down, keeps hair from getting well,
- 4:34Speaker 1: as I proved, it's just as clean to skin him
- 4:37Speaker 1: then dunk them. But he dunked them, and then and
- 4:40Speaker 1: then that's what he's dealing with, is something that's unsightly
- 4:43Speaker 1: as that. But their tails aren't poofy. Their tails are
- 4:45Speaker 1: like like rat tails. They're soaking wet. So they grabbed
- 4:49Speaker 1: him by the whiskers and dunked him from the head
- 4:52Speaker 1: in when in the morning and you look at yourself.
- 4:58Speaker 1: So they're a hundred squirrels over the allowed possession limit.
- 5:01Speaker 1: All were cited for possession of over limit of squirrels
- 5:04Speaker 1: and warnings were issued for failure to keep wildlife separate
- 5:08Speaker 1: and identifiable. Meaning that's my pile, that's your pile, that's
- 5:12Speaker 1: your pile again. Laid out like a drug bust. Yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 1: oh yeah, laid out like a drug bust. Non resident
- 5:24Speaker 1: squirrel slaughter in Missouri joined today by Jordan. But Jordan,
- 5:30Speaker 1: what do you think about all that? Man? You know,
- 5:32Speaker 1: I don't know much about squirrels. We're squirrel hunting haven't
- 5:36Speaker 1: done it. Seriously, seriously haven't. But you're born in Nebraska.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I know you guys got tree squirrels, don't you for
- 5:42Speaker 1: sure when you were located. Yeah, but rabbits, Yeah, did
- 5:50Speaker 1: the rabbit thing, and coyotes and then big game. Never
- 5:55Speaker 1: got a squirrel, Never got a squirrel even like squirrel curious? No,
- 6:00Speaker 1: do you get a lot of money? Ah? Yeah, there's
- 6:03Speaker 1: a lot of them out there? What kind of looking
- 6:05Speaker 1: at I turned my attention to Janni just to read
- 6:09Speaker 1: his facial expression. Oh, yeah, because we might have to
- 6:11Speaker 1: go and do a little hot with d place if
- 6:14Speaker 1: there's some virgin squirrel to be had there, definitely is.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Do you know if they're grays or fox squirrels? I
- 6:20Speaker 1: couldn't tell you. They rusty colored. They're rusty colored. Have
- 6:23Speaker 1: you ever got them all house cat? Yeah, they're pretty big, Jordan,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Have you ever got an awesome invitation like that? Somebody
- 6:30Speaker 1: do any of the favor of taking you out to
- 6:32Speaker 1: your own place hunt your own squirrels will come up.
- 6:43Speaker 1: We can show you like five different ways to skin
- 6:45Speaker 1: them and clean them. We'll teach you the clay nukem
- 6:49Speaker 1: duncan first method, the pants and the shirt and pants method,
- 6:54Speaker 1: tail method, all the methods. Yeah yeah, pends, squirrels. You
- 6:59Speaker 1: got over there, Cal cal Han's here, sir um Phil,
- 7:07Speaker 1: he was late Karen fresh Offer first Antelope hunt? Did
- 7:13Speaker 1: you know that it was mildly controversial when I requested
- 7:16Speaker 1: that that chair to be put in there? I never
- 7:18Speaker 1: get over there, but I see people enjoy themselves over there.
- 7:21Speaker 1: What was controversial? Just like one of those things like
- 7:23Speaker 1: of you know, the opportunity cost of me going picking
- 7:27Speaker 1: that chair up or whatever. I don't know. Listen, man,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I had to ask for that chair fifteen times. This
- 7:33Speaker 1: guy's high on his own supply after after his dear
- 7:38Speaker 1: Stand calendar was a huge success, and now he's just
- 7:42Speaker 1: I was revisiting every time I've been wrong. You almost
- 7:48Speaker 1: think it was that the calendar didn't do well, and
- 7:50Speaker 1: I was going back to try to find other examples
- 7:52Speaker 1: of being right. But this just inspired me to point
- 7:55Speaker 1: out other times in my life and I've been credit
- 7:57Speaker 1: about that. Uh oh my gosh, Yanni, a giant sheephead
- 8:03Speaker 1: is here? Yes, this one more being in the room.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Oh oh a snort, Oh yeah. And Cal's dog fresh
- 8:10Speaker 1: Off almost dying. Is that true? Or is he making
- 8:15Speaker 1: it up. Man, I've been around a lot of dead
- 8:18Speaker 1: and dying animals, and I was like, okay, we are
- 8:22Speaker 1: I was like, oh, well, I guess it was a
- 8:24Speaker 1: short run. But it was a good round type of thing.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we'll get to that. We'll get to how
- 8:29Speaker 1: that dog almost died. Um. But Yannie, big bighorn cheap school. Yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 1: double be for Yanni Pete, and be stands for broomed,
- 8:41Speaker 1: double broom. But but but bighorns are as plainly what
- 8:46Speaker 1: broom does. But I mean big horns kind of run broomed.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't know if that's true. Really. I think some
- 8:53Speaker 1: of the biggest ones still have their lamb tips of unbroom. No,
- 8:59Speaker 1: they get to as certain they get to a certain size,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and it just broomed. Okay, I didn't know. Um. I
- 9:08Speaker 1: like the fact that what I've been staring at the
- 9:10Speaker 1: most is this kind of chunk of gelatin, uh collagen,
- 9:17Speaker 1: yummy nous that's still stuck to the nose of this thing.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And I keep thinking about, just if we were roasting
- 9:27Speaker 1: this head right now. Yeah, it's freshly killed, so it's
- 9:32Speaker 1: it hasn't been trimmed up. I just I got the eyeballs.
- 9:36Speaker 1: As as far as that made it, it's nine years old.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Nine years old? Which uh, in in your unit, your circumstance,
- 9:46Speaker 1: where's that put this ram? Like if the biologist buddy said, uh,
- 9:53Speaker 1: where this lies in the in the pack. As far
- 9:56Speaker 1: as population goes, there was one other ram that I
- 10:00Speaker 1: saw that I hunted that was probably eleven or twelve
- 10:04Speaker 1: years old, and then there was probably four or five
- 10:09Speaker 1: that were in this sky's range, and then younger rams.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So not that many. For how much country there was
- 10:17Speaker 1: to look at. You put some miles on, did we? Yeah?
- 10:24Speaker 1: I don't know if there was, Like I can't say, like, oh,
- 10:25Speaker 1: it's like a minimum of ten miles a day. But
- 10:27Speaker 1: one day I did three seriously, But that was because
- 10:31Speaker 1: I had to go out to the trailhead and pick
- 10:35Speaker 1: up Charlie Williams, the photographer re stock food grabbed my
- 10:38Speaker 1: rifle and then come back in. Yeah, and that might
- 10:41Speaker 1: have been the mistake I made, which might have cost
- 10:44Speaker 1: me the m the chocolate ram. Oh, the chocolate not
- 10:49Speaker 1: mr big nuts. They all have big nuts, old kettle bell.
- 10:55Speaker 1: It's like a pineapple hanging down there. Yeah. So there.
- 11:00Speaker 1: The approaches were long to get into the sheep country. Uh,
- 11:03Speaker 1: there's a lot of private property in the area, and
- 11:05Speaker 1: to just to get into where they are in this range,
- 11:08Speaker 1: you've got to circumnavigate some private which makes the approaches long.
- 11:12Speaker 1: When you were bouncing from like one peak to the
- 11:15Speaker 1: next peak, did you oftentimes have to go down and
- 11:18Speaker 1: cross drainages or was it just like a long ridge
- 11:20Speaker 1: line that you're hunting on. Definitely, wasn't ridge line running
- 11:23Speaker 1: like we've done in Alaska um isolated chunks of habitat. No,
- 11:28Speaker 1: the ridge lines are long with their unnavigable without like
- 11:33Speaker 1: maybe like like a very skilled mountain climber like Garrett
- 11:37Speaker 1: Smith could probably make it along there if he had
- 11:39Speaker 1: his equipment with him. But like you just can't walk
- 11:42Speaker 1: up on the ridge and then just walk down the
- 11:43Speaker 1: ridge because it's just interrupted by spires and stuff. So yeah,
- 11:46Speaker 1: just steep loose rock. Your efficient line was like zipper,
- 11:51Speaker 1: like a big zig zag, like going out to points
- 11:54Speaker 1: to look back versus we're basically just going up into drainages,
- 11:58Speaker 1: looking up, maybe climbing up one side to look across,
- 12:02Speaker 1: and then coming back out the drainage, looping around ridge,
- 12:05Speaker 1: going up the next drainage and repeating, Oh, that makes miles.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Were they mostly in the alpine or were they in
- 12:11Speaker 1: the timber? They're definitely, um some One of the advice
- 12:15Speaker 1: that was given them about that unit was to definitely
- 12:17Speaker 1: keep your eyes like on the timber line and in
- 12:20Speaker 1: the timber as much as you can. I mean, there's
- 12:22Speaker 1: a certain point where you're like, you don't think they're
- 12:24Speaker 1: gonna be down one of the elkar where there's aspen
- 12:27Speaker 1: meadows and stuff, you know. So I think when people
- 12:29Speaker 1: said looking at timber, they were talking like, Okay, the
- 12:32Speaker 1: top half of the ridge is rocky. The bottom if
- 12:36Speaker 1: you split the bottom half half of it's like open timber,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and then it goes full timber. Like look in that
- 12:42Speaker 1: open timber and you might see them and uh, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: because the vegetation changes so much just in there in
- 12:48Speaker 1: a thousand feet right like in that lower timber where
- 12:50Speaker 1: I found the rams before the season started. I mean
- 12:54Speaker 1: when you look at the pictures, it's like they're feeding
- 12:56Speaker 1: in this like lush jungle, very green. You know a
- 13:00Speaker 1: lot of you know, on them shoulder to head high vegetation.
- 13:04Speaker 1: But then they climb a thousand feet and there's nothing
- 13:07Speaker 1: over two or three inches tall, just rocks. So how
- 13:12Speaker 1: how many days did you hunt? Well, I know that
- 13:15Speaker 1: you found one before. Yeah, I found a group of
- 13:18Speaker 1: rams before. Yeah, well a couple of days before open. Yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 1: When I saw him, I knew it was too good
- 13:28Speaker 1: to be true. I'm sitting there looking at it ran
- 13:31Speaker 1: that you could I mean, he was in the easiest
- 13:33Speaker 1: spot of easiest spots that I saw all the whole week,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and it's three days before season, and I'm just like,
- 13:42Speaker 1: there's no way, there's no way that ram is gonna
- 13:44Speaker 1: be standing in that little I called them pastures, you know,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and elk I I feel like feeds in a meadow,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and so does a deer. But when I was looking
- 13:51Speaker 1: at these big green avalanche shoots, I couldn't call the metal.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I feel like it was more like a pasture because
- 13:56Speaker 1: that's where like a sheep and a goat feeds, right,
- 13:58Speaker 1: It's like feeding a pasture. I was just like, there's
- 14:00Speaker 1: no way he's gonna be don't want to call a
- 14:02Speaker 1: little grassy bowl. M they weren't bowls. When you were
- 14:06Speaker 1: you were doing like the mental gymnastics, did you try
- 14:08Speaker 1: to like reason as to why that group disappeared where
- 14:13Speaker 1: you like maybe they got my smell, maybe they saw it,
- 14:15Speaker 1: maybe they were more nervous. That's the first thing your
- 14:17Speaker 1: buddy Steve said when I said I hadn't seen him
- 14:20Speaker 1: in a few days. Did you spook him? Well as
- 14:22Speaker 1: much as I can. Uh, it was a text message. Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 1: so I think that you need to do a very
- 14:29Speaker 1: neutral reading. Uh, did you spook him? That's better? But no,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I meant it like the way you said it first. Yeah. Yeah, yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 1: that's that's the inflection I felt. I read the text.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Are you fucking this up? Exactly? What? Yeah? What serie
- 14:53Speaker 1: reads your text messages? That's what That's what I think.
- 14:55Speaker 1: What he's trying to say is did you get too
- 14:59Speaker 1: anxious and decided to just, you know, go pretend shoot
- 15:02Speaker 1: him and then ran him off the country. But I
- 15:05Speaker 1: was getting at in my text. I wasn't getting at you.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I was getting at like, is it probable that you'll
- 15:11Speaker 1: find it? Yeah? Meaning if you spook the hell out
- 15:13Speaker 1: of it, then you might have been like that it's
- 15:15Speaker 1: never gonna work, you know. I feel like these sheep
- 15:18Speaker 1: don't get a lot of human pressure. They don't get
- 15:21Speaker 1: hunted that much. Right, you have a couple of tags,
- 15:23Speaker 1: A year. This year there was three tags in the unit. Um. Well,
- 15:29Speaker 1: I think we often as hunters like to, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 1: put on these animals that like, oh, they're so elusive.
- 15:34Speaker 1: It's the most evasive species out of all of them.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Where I think a lot of times, especially like these
- 15:39Speaker 1: big corn sheep, they're not trying to hide from us.
- 15:42Speaker 1: They're just being sheep. They're doing their thing. They live
- 15:45Speaker 1: up in the rocks where they are hard to find,
- 15:48Speaker 1: probably not just for me, but probably for mountain lions
- 15:51Speaker 1: and you know whatever other predators are out there too.
- 15:53Speaker 1: That's like their safety, right. Um. So they just walked
- 15:58Speaker 1: to the thing was he was hanging out with another
- 16:01Speaker 1: fairly mature ram and then uh, five young rams. So
- 16:06Speaker 1: I kept thinking like, man, if they stay together, one
- 16:10Speaker 1: of those is gonna pop out, Like it should be
- 16:11Speaker 1: pretty easy to find seven rams somewhere. And they just
- 16:15Speaker 1: went to a place that I don't think I looked
- 16:19Speaker 1: it was I would. I mean, I can show you
- 16:21Speaker 1: some pictures right now, but this country definitely like when
- 16:24Speaker 1: we were at the bottom in the drainages, sometimes you're
- 16:27Speaker 1: looking over three thousand feet to the top, you know,
- 16:31Speaker 1: and there's just so many boulders and little ledges and
- 16:35Speaker 1: like almost like these canyons on the hillside that like
- 16:39Speaker 1: or it's like a spire, like a little ridge that
- 16:42Speaker 1: just forms in the rocks, and there might be a
- 16:43Speaker 1: little grassy bench back there. And if they're in their
- 16:45Speaker 1: feeding for a day, you sat there for twelve hours
- 16:48Speaker 1: and glass the hell out of it and they never
- 16:51Speaker 1: popped out. You just don't know. That being said, I
- 16:56Speaker 1: feel like, especially you know, Charlie Williams was there taking
- 17:00Speaker 1: pictures and he would grab the bind notes when he
- 17:02Speaker 1: was done taking pictures, and at some point you gotta
- 17:06Speaker 1: trust your glassing and just be like, you know what,
- 17:08Speaker 1: we pounded this thing for a morning and evening another morning,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and all the time in between, we're gonna have to
- 17:15Speaker 1: move on and go look somewhere else. Maybe we'll come back.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Like my plan was to basically just do a circuit,
- 17:21Speaker 1: because I knew roughly the ridge and maybe a half
- 17:25Speaker 1: of another ridge where they should be, And after I
- 17:27Speaker 1: cleared him out, I was just gonna restock, go right
- 17:31Speaker 1: back into whatever fifteen miles and restart the process, you know,
- 17:35Speaker 1: and just loop around or like that idea. It's a good,
- 17:38Speaker 1: good good for the mental game too. It's like it's
- 17:42Speaker 1: a good plan. Yeah, if you let enough time go
- 17:44Speaker 1: by where you can muster up some level of excitement. Yeah,
- 17:49Speaker 1: you mean between looking at the same Yeah, yeah, because
- 17:53Speaker 1: it doesn't. It never fails. As soon as you move
- 17:55Speaker 1: to the other side of the ridge, you're like and
- 17:57Speaker 1: you don't see him there. You're like, they're back there.
- 18:00Speaker 1: We should go back. We know, I know they're they're
- 18:02Speaker 1: they're out right now when we're not there and on
- 18:05Speaker 1: the hill, if you'd never like hiked the country too,
- 18:08Speaker 1: you'd be so much more confident in your glassing, right
- 18:12Speaker 1: because the glass it flattens out so much. And it's
- 18:15Speaker 1: like those uh been using those eight those eighteen by
- 18:20Speaker 1: fifty six is the big vour text ones. I love
- 18:22Speaker 1: those things, and I just like glue into him and
- 18:24Speaker 1: your eyes are relaxed, and man, you just get this
- 18:27Speaker 1: feeling like, oh I covered it. But then like you
- 18:31Speaker 1: walk something and you're like, yeah, you say, when he
- 18:35Speaker 1: was glass and um, he imagined a laser sound those
- 18:42Speaker 1: the noises vinals are making his glass and so how many?
- 18:46Speaker 1: So then what happened? You lost track of everybody? And
- 18:49Speaker 1: then when I when I found that group of seven,
- 18:52Speaker 1: there was actually a group of five that were only
- 18:54Speaker 1: like four yards away and this was the interesting thing,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and they were there has to do some college rams
- 19:00Speaker 1: in the group. So this whole unit has less than
- 19:03Speaker 1: a hundred sheep in it. And so when you start
- 19:05Speaker 1: doing the math, there's probably roughly rams in there. Out
- 19:09Speaker 1: of there there might be in Colorado, they had to
- 19:12Speaker 1: be half curl to be legal, and so there's probably
- 19:16Speaker 1: a dozen to fifteen legal rams out of those, you know,
- 19:23Speaker 1: six seven that are like this guy like seven eights
- 19:26Speaker 1: or for full curl ish and um you know in
- 19:30Speaker 1: that eight to nine maybe older UM range, So you're
- 19:34Speaker 1: not looking for a lot. So yeah, before a season,
- 19:36Speaker 1: I'm looking at twelve rams. I mean looking at you're
- 19:38Speaker 1: looking at half the rams in the whole unit, which
- 19:40Speaker 1: is pretty cool. But I was asked, I know people
- 19:43Speaker 1: that are UM work for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and
- 19:47Speaker 1: doing my research for the hunt, I you know, talked
- 19:49Speaker 1: to the regional wildlife biologists and the UM, the local
- 19:54Speaker 1: game warden and everybody's like, have a great hunt and
- 19:58Speaker 1: if you can, please don't shoot one of the collared ones. Like,
- 20:01Speaker 1: we got a lot of time and money invested in it.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Five year collars were and they just started this study.
- 20:08Speaker 1: We're gonna get a lot of data points off of them.
- 20:11Speaker 1: And so of course this five pack has two collars
- 20:14Speaker 1: in it. We started calling him the chain gang because
- 20:19Speaker 1: there's other buddy with him has a scar on his chest,
- 20:22Speaker 1: so you know what we nicknamed him. No, I don't scart,
- 20:28Speaker 1: just just scar, keep it, keep it short and easy.
- 20:32Speaker 1: But I swear they were following me. I mean, we
- 20:35Speaker 1: wouldn't leave one drainage and hike for a day, like
- 20:39Speaker 1: we go and look at one another side of the
- 20:41Speaker 1: hill and then hike all the way around, be looking,
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean and again to them, it's just a hop,
- 20:45Speaker 1: skip and a jump to move a mile or two
- 20:47Speaker 1: and go over the ridge. But like we're being a
- 20:49Speaker 1: totally new zone and we'd be like, oh, she get
- 20:52Speaker 1: all excited and you're like it's the gang five, you know,
- 20:59Speaker 1: And uh so I would have because it's legal to
- 21:01Speaker 1: shoot a collard ram. Yeah, and there there was a
- 21:04Speaker 1: nice one. But you know, we've talked about it. I
- 21:06Speaker 1: was like, man, these things are tainted. You know, man
- 21:09Speaker 1: has already touched these and shot these once. We've had
- 21:14Speaker 1: this conversation many times, right, Yeah, I'm gonna bring up
- 21:17Speaker 1: the important or important part unsolicited. So I was down
- 21:22Speaker 1: in in uh y He County helping my buddy GM
- 21:25Speaker 1: with his very you know once in a lifetime California
- 21:29Speaker 1: big horn, cheap tag and glass. This group of nine rams,
- 21:35Speaker 1: this is an Idaho in Idaho yep, south extreme southwest
- 21:38Speaker 1: Idaho and one of which and definitely like the oldest
- 21:43Speaker 1: ram in the in the group both by just like
- 21:46Speaker 1: body configuration and horn size is collared and um for
- 21:54Speaker 1: you know, the second trip ever, I'm packing around that
- 21:58Speaker 1: somewhere device and I'm sitting there like and and my
- 22:03Speaker 1: buddy Jim's like, boy, that colored ram, that colored ram,
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know, like he's definitely like got it his interest right,
- 22:10Speaker 1: he's starting to talk himself into it, right. And so I,
- 22:15Speaker 1: unbeknownst to him, I like send a text message out
- 22:19Speaker 1: to Idaho Fishing Game, a friend of mine, and I
- 22:22Speaker 1: just said, hey, is it a dick move to kill this?
- 22:27Speaker 1: This is where we are and this is and we're
- 22:29Speaker 1: looking at a colored ram. And uh, you know, a
- 22:34Speaker 1: couple of hours go by and I get a response
- 22:36Speaker 1: it says not a dick move, kill it. Oh huh yeah,
- 22:40Speaker 1: So just just a different program going on over there.
- 22:43Speaker 1: But I don't know if you remember when we were
- 22:45Speaker 1: kind of covering the dues and don'ts of colored animals. Uh,
- 22:49Speaker 1: Florida was doing the State of Florida was doing a
- 22:51Speaker 1: mortality study and they're doing a white tailed deer mortality study.
- 22:57Speaker 1: And they had a thing saying like, if you're hunting
- 23:00Speaker 1: and see a collar deer, don't shoot it because it's collard,
- 23:06Speaker 1: But don't not shoot it because it's collar. Try to
- 23:11Speaker 1: like ignore the collar and make the decision you'd make
- 23:14Speaker 1: in the absence of the collar, and then do what
- 23:17Speaker 1: you would otherwise do, because they're trying to determine like
- 23:20Speaker 1: what kills dear, just considering if everyone just really badly
- 23:24Speaker 1: wants a collar, you're gonna be, like, my goodness, just
- 23:28Speaker 1: get whittled away. And if no one will touch it,
- 23:30Speaker 1: you know, you don't get an accurate representation of how
- 23:33Speaker 1: do you die? So as we sat there, this buddy
- 23:36Speaker 1: mind Jammy sixty seven years old, doesn't pay attention to
- 23:40Speaker 1: a single thing we do, so he has not heard
- 23:43Speaker 1: this conversation before, but unsolicited. He's like, after he gets
- 23:49Speaker 1: excited about this ram and wants to like it's degrees
- 23:53Speaker 1: wants to go across this god off O canyon up
- 23:56Speaker 1: the other side and go like chase this group into
- 23:59Speaker 1: the had a canyon, which part of your brain is like, oh,
- 24:03Speaker 1: they just went in there and they're just gonna be
- 24:06Speaker 1: there waiting for us. Where the other side of your brands,
- 24:09Speaker 1: like those things aren't gone. They're like, this is the
- 24:11Speaker 1: end of the line. Boys, We're going to this candy.
- 24:14Speaker 1: That's as far as we go. Uh and so unsolicited.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Jim's like what do you what do you think about
- 24:23Speaker 1: killing something with a collar on it. He's like like
- 24:26Speaker 1: somebody already got to it first. There was like that
- 24:31Speaker 1: argument of like, but it's tainted, Like you should have said, well, Jim,
- 24:36Speaker 1: people should do like shooting them banded ducks. Yeah, we
- 24:40Speaker 1: can make a necklace out of that, or get a
- 24:43Speaker 1: copy of that uh collar for you. You can wear
- 24:47Speaker 1: it around your neck. Well, I was thinking these sheep
- 24:50Speaker 1: also had double ear tags, so then I was going
- 24:54Speaker 1: to take those ear tags and run a necklace take
- 24:57Speaker 1: like a duck hunter. I like it. Huh Um. I'll
- 25:04Speaker 1: tell you story of Ronnie Bam got a banded goose
- 25:07Speaker 1: and when he turned it in it was it was
- 25:10Speaker 1: banded where he got it. That's not nearly exciting. It
- 25:17Speaker 1: been like just banded where he got it. Jordan's as
- 25:22Speaker 1: you're your sheep hunting experience, just been in Mexico, Um, Mexico.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I filmed the stone sheep quite a while back, and
- 25:33Speaker 1: then a lot of wilming bigcorns. Yeah, yeah, I just
- 25:39Speaker 1: filmed the hunts. Yeah, I filmed and then I shot
- 25:42Speaker 1: that doll sheep in August, and that's been my sheep
- 25:45Speaker 1: hunting experience. Yeah, so you're pretty much the most prolific
- 25:48Speaker 1: sheep hunter in the room. I would not say, did
- 25:51Speaker 1: you see pictures of Jordan's doll ram the quietest and
- 25:56Speaker 1: most prolific sheep hunter in the room. What's that tell you? Um?
- 26:01Speaker 1: All right, so yeah, get tell us what happened now? Um?
- 26:06Speaker 1: So Yeah, we looked and looked and looked and kept
- 26:09Speaker 1: running into that you know, the five pack, and decided
- 26:13Speaker 1: to There's a couple of different ways you could have run.
- 26:17Speaker 1: It was one was just we were gonna decided we're
- 26:19Speaker 1: gonna push either push up way up into this drainage
- 26:21Speaker 1: in the country we hadn't been into yet, and started
- 26:23Speaker 1: looking and it was quite pretty amazing. Man, like these mountains.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I had hunted on them quite a bit um when
- 26:29Speaker 1: I lived in Colorado, but just I hadn't been in
- 26:32Speaker 1: these parts. And there was definitely parts where you're like,
- 26:34Speaker 1: you felt like you were in Alaska, just like big
- 26:37Speaker 1: subridges that were just crumbling, you know, hanging little glaciers
- 26:41Speaker 1: all over the place, and like I said, country that
- 26:44Speaker 1: was you can't just walk over. You know. You're like, well,
- 26:47Speaker 1: if you want to get back there, you have to
- 26:48Speaker 1: go all the way down then come up the drainage
- 26:50Speaker 1: and you know, really like route finding, you know. Anyways,
- 26:54Speaker 1: instead of doing that, we decided to back out and
- 26:57Speaker 1: then climb the net X ridge over and then just
- 27:02Speaker 1: glass back. And it was a huge glass. It's like
- 27:05Speaker 1: two miles. You're looking from point to point, which is
- 27:09Speaker 1: you know, when you're looking for an animal, it looks
- 27:10Speaker 1: like the rocks that it's sitting in. It's a long
- 27:13Speaker 1: ways away, you know. So we started, we did a
- 27:15Speaker 1: lot of just one eyeball in through the spot and scope. Anyhow,
- 27:19Speaker 1: we climb up there. We glass twelve hours whatever it is,
- 27:24Speaker 1: daylight to almost dark, to the point where I'm like
- 27:28Speaker 1: I'm done. We didn't see anything. Charlie let's go make camp.
- 27:31Speaker 1: So we're walking across this We're kind of on our shoulder.
- 27:34Speaker 1: We're walking across a bowl towards the bench where I
- 27:36Speaker 1: think we can find a flat spot, and I just
- 27:38Speaker 1: happened to look up and like eight yards away on
- 27:41Speaker 1: the horizon, like very dusky light, I see something out
- 27:44Speaker 1: of place glass, like, holy sh it, it's a ram.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And then right as I was I'm looking at him,
- 27:50Speaker 1: another ram like pops up behind him. And then they
- 27:52Speaker 1: quickly before we can get a spot and scope for
- 27:54Speaker 1: anything out on him, they kind of dropped towards us
- 27:56Speaker 1: and go left and disappear. So we watched the hills.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I told dark to make sure nothing. Pretty much made
- 28:03Speaker 1: camp right there in the morning. UM washed the hillside
- 28:09Speaker 1: for maybe the first thirty minutes. I wanted to let
- 28:11Speaker 1: the light come up because we we had the advantage
- 28:13Speaker 1: where the light was gonna someone's gonna come up at
- 28:15Speaker 1: our backs, and I figured, if we're gonna walk towards them,
- 28:18Speaker 1: it would be good, you know, maybe maybe we'll get
- 28:20Speaker 1: into slight advantage if they got the sun in their eyes.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Hike up pretty much leave the trees hike up from
- 28:28Speaker 1: I don't know. We must have been camping above eleven,
- 28:30Speaker 1: because I ended up shooting him at like twelve five.
- 28:33Speaker 1: So we hike up a thousand feet to where we
- 28:36Speaker 1: last saw him and see that there's they had kind
- 28:39Speaker 1: of and looking at the you know, on X map
- 28:42Speaker 1: on the phone, I could see that they had kind
- 28:43Speaker 1: of fed into these draws would looked like maybe a
- 28:46Speaker 1: little abbey shoots, and I figured there was grass in there,
- 28:49Speaker 1: you know, And I figured that we had seen other
- 28:53Speaker 1: sheep kind of doing the same thing, like feeding down
- 28:56Speaker 1: into these abbey shoots in the morning, feeding back up
- 28:58Speaker 1: and then find a play. It's amongst the rocks to
- 29:01Speaker 1: spend the day. So we get to the first one
- 29:03Speaker 1: and kind of wrap around the hill through pretty big talents,
- 29:08Speaker 1: you know, some stuff that's as big as a car.
- 29:10Speaker 1: The smaller stuff if you get one of those little runs,
- 29:13Speaker 1: you know, it might get a little smaller like baseball,
- 29:15Speaker 1: you know size, and kind of creep around him. I
- 29:19Speaker 1: can see like the first abbey shoot kind of opening
- 29:21Speaker 1: up in front of me, and I'm looking for the grass,
- 29:24Speaker 1: and you know, there's a roll of hill in front
- 29:26Speaker 1: of me. And I'm always preaching this like, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: take your time, because they could just be just over
- 29:29Speaker 1: that hill. So one step at a time, scan the
- 29:32Speaker 1: whole thing, take another step, but I keep ranging the
- 29:35Speaker 1: far side of the shoot, and then I'm getting to
- 29:37Speaker 1: where the far side of the shoots like a hundred yards,
- 29:39Speaker 1: eighty yards, seventy yards. I'm like, this is gonna suck,
- 29:42Speaker 1: because if they're in here, I'm gonna step on them
- 29:45Speaker 1: and then we're gonna have a covey of sheep blowing
- 29:48Speaker 1: out of here and I'm gonna be forced to make
- 29:50Speaker 1: a decision, you know, which I didn't want to make
- 29:52Speaker 1: one like that. Well, luckily they're not in that one,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and right the country kind of opens up down below us.
- 29:59Speaker 1: It's almost like two shoots kind of met and kind
- 30:01Speaker 1: of bowled out a little bit. And I figured if
- 30:04Speaker 1: we went down just a little ways, like fifty yards,
- 30:07Speaker 1: we would be able to kind of look into this
- 30:09Speaker 1: other shoot from from down and kind of look back
- 30:12Speaker 1: up into it. And that move is all it took.
- 30:14Speaker 1: We got down there and I looked across and this
- 30:17Speaker 1: ram was actually in quotes, you know, looking at me.
- 30:21Speaker 1: He might have been like facing my direction when I
- 30:23Speaker 1: first saw him, and uh then he had four other
- 30:27Speaker 1: rams with him. Figured they were new rams. Well, part
- 30:31Speaker 1: of my mind saying they're new rams. Then the other
- 30:33Speaker 1: part of my mind that really wanted to kill a big,
- 30:35Speaker 1: big chocolate ram is like, that's him. He takes chocolate,
- 30:40Speaker 1: he's by himself, he's got fairly good drop. It looks
- 30:43Speaker 1: like it's going like I'm running all these things through
- 30:45Speaker 1: my mind. But what really like just like completely flipped
- 30:49Speaker 1: my brain was that I looked at the four pack
- 30:51Speaker 1: next to him, and I saw a ram with the
- 30:53Speaker 1: chip out of its horn. How you tell you this?
- 30:54Speaker 1: That the Okay? So the chocolate ram was running with
- 30:57Speaker 1: another mature ram had a giant chunk missing out of
- 31:01Speaker 1: his Yeah, like just very identifiable. So we named him
- 31:05Speaker 1: Chocolate and Chip's cute. That's what I thought. We had
- 31:11Speaker 1: all kinds of names. We also started calling the big
- 31:13Speaker 1: one Willy Wonka and we're gonna go find him at
- 31:15Speaker 1: the chocolate factory. And I happened to be running with
- 31:17Speaker 1: a photographer named Charlie. So it's just really all you know,
- 31:23Speaker 1: any who. Uh. At that point, my mind's like, dude,
- 31:27Speaker 1: that's it, that he's the that's the chocolate Ram. You
- 31:29Speaker 1: need to kill him. And that kind of just went
- 31:31Speaker 1: into like automode, and it was I wish we could
- 31:36Speaker 1: have filmed that, uh because the next like two minutes
- 31:41Speaker 1: that it took once, I was like, Okay, I'm gonna
- 31:42Speaker 1: kill him. It was quite comical. So I go to
- 31:46Speaker 1: jack around in and I have my mag just packed full,
- 31:50Speaker 1: and sometimes I feel like when it's packed full, it
- 31:53Speaker 1: just they don't want to feed quite right. And I'm
- 31:55Speaker 1: I think I jacked it too slow instead of just
- 31:57Speaker 1: like you know, really running the action. And so I
- 32:00Speaker 1: get the one halfway in, but then the one underneath
- 32:03Speaker 1: it was trying to like climb in there with it,
- 32:05Speaker 1: and I'm like that, and so I just dropped the
- 32:08Speaker 1: mag you know, and just get all the bullets out
- 32:10Speaker 1: of there. So then I pitched like whatever they holds
- 32:12Speaker 1: four bullets, I think, off to my right, you know,
- 32:14Speaker 1: in the rocks, and man, I'm on this rock that's
- 32:17Speaker 1: like it's a big rock. It's like I don't know
- 32:21Speaker 1: half our table here, you know, it's like two by
- 32:24Speaker 1: four ft, but it's kind of sloped to pitch against
- 32:27Speaker 1: the hill and I'm trying to get my bipod on it,
- 32:29Speaker 1: and I actually had to come back on it so
- 32:31Speaker 1: that the bipod could drop lower, you know, but my
- 32:34Speaker 1: gun could still clear the top edge of the rock.
- 32:37Speaker 1: My feet are way above my head the position I'm
- 32:39Speaker 1: trying to get myself into, so I'm trying to like
- 32:41Speaker 1: half like use my backpack to like support my ribs,
- 32:44Speaker 1: but have it so that it's supporting my rear of
- 32:47Speaker 1: my gun too. And all week we've been brushing, busting
- 32:52Speaker 1: so much brush that every couple of days I was
- 32:54Speaker 1: like clearing out my chamber and my barrel because I
- 32:58Speaker 1: just felt like pine needles and stuff would drop been
- 33:00Speaker 1: in there. So when I put a bullet back in,
- 33:02Speaker 1: I now go to close it. I feel it gets
- 33:04Speaker 1: kind of sticky, and I'm like, oh, it's not going
- 33:07Speaker 1: to close all the way, you know, So I pull
- 33:08Speaker 1: the bolt back real quick. I try just to like
- 33:11Speaker 1: you know, fingernail that cartridge, and it's like stuck like
- 33:14Speaker 1: son of a bit, you know. So I got the
- 33:17Speaker 1: bench made out, I'm trying to like, you know, wiggle it.
- 33:20Speaker 1: I'm just turning the gun, you know, right side up,
- 33:22Speaker 1: drop the bolt out, and banging on the recoil patch,
- 33:25Speaker 1: trying to get this thing to come out because I
- 33:27Speaker 1: don't want to fire it. Thinking that they're oh man,
- 33:30Speaker 1: it's like autopilot. And then just like full on flustered,
- 33:34Speaker 1: and uh, Charlie's like up the hill a little way.
- 33:37Speaker 1: So you know, I think he was excited to about it.
- 33:39Speaker 1: He just melted into the rocks. And I didn't want
- 33:42Speaker 1: to either help or make the situation worse. But it's
- 33:45Speaker 1: been really nice to have someone there to be like, dude,
- 33:48Speaker 1: just chill out for a second. So the thing finally
- 33:53Speaker 1: falls out, you know, and and I sit there and
- 33:55Speaker 1: take the bolt out, flip the gun backwards, put a
- 33:58Speaker 1: big puff of air through it, like blow whatever was
- 34:00Speaker 1: in there out of there, put my gun back together,
- 34:04Speaker 1: and every you know, ten seconds, some glass and just
- 34:06Speaker 1: to make sure that the herd's not running off, and uh,
- 34:10Speaker 1: get all set up. I just decided to put one
- 34:13Speaker 1: bullet in there, right and I'm like, okay, just take
- 34:20Speaker 1: a deep breath. And when he gives you like a
- 34:22Speaker 1: good bronze side shot, you know, it's like, of course,
- 34:27Speaker 1: he just like immediately gives me a broadside shot. There
- 34:29Speaker 1: was no like breathe into it. It was just like
- 34:32Speaker 1: there's a broadside shop. But I did range and I
- 34:36Speaker 1: did dial, which was really sweet. It was soon or
- 34:39Speaker 1: twenty yards. I think I had to dial either. I
- 34:41Speaker 1: think it was four m A. It was really nice,
- 34:44Speaker 1: just a hold dead on um. But it was funny
- 34:47Speaker 1: that I only had one bullet in because he kind
- 34:49Speaker 1: of spins. I get on him pretty quickly again, like
- 34:52Speaker 1: in seconds, and he's now he's facing me, and I'm
- 34:55Speaker 1: not seeing blood. I can't see him wobbling and like,
- 35:00Speaker 1: you better shoot him again. Click because I had cycled,
- 35:04Speaker 1: you know, there wasn't another bullet in there, and right
- 35:07Speaker 1: when I clicked clicked it, he started tumbling down the hill.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Huh yeah, And then it was solid thirty minutes and
- 35:17Speaker 1: very emotional phone calls and uh celebration, you know, calling
- 35:23Speaker 1: the wife. But did you have like a little like
- 35:26Speaker 1: because he tumbles away from you, right, yeah, kind of
- 35:30Speaker 1: like did I make the right decision parallel or you
- 35:33Speaker 1: were already like now you mean to make the right
- 35:36Speaker 1: decision on shooting him, right, because not like you're once
- 35:39Speaker 1: in lifetime hunts over. Oh yeah for sure. Now I
- 35:42Speaker 1: was fourteen days into it, and so no, you're right.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I mean it's totally bittersweet, man, Like you're like because
- 35:51Speaker 1: then you're just like looking around, You're like I might
- 35:53Speaker 1: not stand on this mountain ever again in my life.
- 35:56Speaker 1: You know what's gonna take me to twelve and a
- 35:58Speaker 1: half thousand feet again, you know, in these beautiful Colorado mountains,
- 36:02Speaker 1: and uh, it's bitter, sweet man, no doubt about it.
- 36:05Speaker 1: In general, I want to touch on this. You probably
- 36:07Speaker 1: felt it this summer, you know, going on in your
- 36:09Speaker 1: first dollar sheep hunt I assume was your first one.
- 36:12Speaker 1: But just like the pressure from the moment we were
- 36:15Speaker 1: all sitting in the airport together when I got the
- 36:17Speaker 1: phone call from hunting Full and They're like, you've got
- 36:19Speaker 1: a sheep tag, and like from that moment, that pressure
- 36:23Speaker 1: mounts and it's you know, I thought it'll kind of
- 36:26Speaker 1: go away once I'm in the field and I'm I'm
- 36:28Speaker 1: in the hunt, but it doesn't. It might change, but
- 36:32Speaker 1: it's still there. And so in a way, like killing him,
- 36:35Speaker 1: all of a sudden, the pressure is gone. Right, You're
- 36:37Speaker 1: not You're no longer a guy with the sheep tag.
- 36:39Speaker 1: You're just another hunter that now has an elk tag
- 36:42Speaker 1: in a bear tag in their pocket. And it's kind
- 36:45Speaker 1: it's kind of nice, but you do become a guy
- 36:47Speaker 1: with the sheep. You do become a guy with the sheep.
- 36:49Speaker 1: Instead of a tag, you have v tag and there's
- 36:53Speaker 1: a differenceround and so much advice, good advice that comes through,
- 36:57Speaker 1: but pressure about finding the right one and if you're
- 37:00Speaker 1: don even find one or be successful, you know, and sure,
- 37:03Speaker 1: I'm lucky to have a job. That's like, yeah, in
- 37:06Speaker 1: seasons a month long, don't take the whole month. But
- 37:09Speaker 1: if you really probably because I don't know, Mils lengthy.
- 37:18Speaker 1: My my gal is awesome and she's you know, happy
- 37:22Speaker 1: to see me go on big adventures like this, but
- 37:25Speaker 1: you know, it's a that's a long time to take.
- 37:27Speaker 1: So you know, looking back on it, I'd say that
- 37:30Speaker 1: it all happened just right, you know, two weeks of
- 37:33Speaker 1: spending man unreal weather like seventy degree highs forty degree nights.
- 37:39Speaker 1: We were packing a tarp and didn't even set it
- 37:41Speaker 1: up half the time. We would just sleep under the stars,
- 37:44Speaker 1: you know. And that's I kept telling Charlie, who's for him.
- 37:47Speaker 1: It was his first time ever in any kind of
- 37:49Speaker 1: alpine country, so he's just blown away by the whole thing,
- 37:53Speaker 1: you know, and I'm like, yeah, usually when you're up
- 37:56Speaker 1: here at eleven thousand plus, it's like when you see
- 37:59Speaker 1: the clouds starting to form and build. At eleven am,
- 38:02Speaker 1: You're like, okay, we have two hours and then we
- 38:04Speaker 1: need to be descending. And you know, because anybody has
- 38:07Speaker 1: spent an afternoon in a thundershower at eleven thousand feet plus,
- 38:12Speaker 1: nobody wants to do that again. You're looking like down
- 38:14Speaker 1: at the lightning. Oh it sucks. Yeah, and when the
- 38:17Speaker 1: thunder booms, it's like it consumes you. You know. But
- 38:21Speaker 1: we had zero I mean we had like literally ten
- 38:24Speaker 1: rain drops, a few clouds here and there. Um. Yeah.
- 38:29Speaker 1: When I when I reset for the final push in there,
- 38:31Speaker 1: which only actually ended up being a couple of nights,
- 38:33Speaker 1: but I only went in with a bass layer and
- 38:36Speaker 1: my uncompagret puffy. That was it for top layers. No
- 38:40Speaker 1: rain jacket, no mid layer. The only thing I've been
- 38:43Speaker 1: used my mid layer force to build my little pillow
- 38:46Speaker 1: like I like to do. And I'm like, I can
- 38:49Speaker 1: survive without that, you know, no gloves, no beanies, just
- 38:52Speaker 1: using the hood on the jacket. You know. Um, super nice.
- 38:57Speaker 1: It's America for you, is I think they're doing that
- 39:02Speaker 1: in Tehran? It's perfect. Yeah, forty pound pack you know
- 39:07Speaker 1: when we were and that was with food in the
- 39:09Speaker 1: end with five days of food. That's great. Um, it's beautiful. Yeah,
- 39:15Speaker 1: it's quite the experience. I'm on a high. I'm on
- 39:18Speaker 1: like a sheep conservation high, coincidentally, which would be leading
- 39:24Speaker 1: me to believe it won't last. Yeah. Well no, I
- 39:29Speaker 1: did a thing called the Landmark Form, which I think
- 39:31Speaker 1: I've mentioned to you and I was a kid. Yeah,
- 39:34Speaker 1: you know about landmark landmark? Yeah? Was it good for you? Interesting?
- 39:40Speaker 1: We'll have to discuss that. It's a it's a you
- 39:43Speaker 1: know Tony Robbins. Oh, it's like it's a you know
- 39:47Speaker 1: Tom Robbins itself. You don't know Tony Robbins with the
- 39:51Speaker 1: motivations of it. Um. So it's kind of like that
- 39:55Speaker 1: there's a there's a choreographer something named that too, might be.
- 40:02Speaker 1: I didn't know a bottom until zero when zero Dark
- 40:04Speaker 1: thirty came out. They're riding a helicopter and someone asked
- 40:07Speaker 1: someone what he's listening to, says Tony Robbins. I thought
- 40:10Speaker 1: he's listening to like a choreographer. Then I looked it
- 40:13Speaker 1: up realized that it's a motivational dude. Yes, So when
- 40:17Speaker 1: you go do like a landmark form, thing at least
- 40:19Speaker 1: is how it was for me. You go there for
- 40:20Speaker 1: like a weekend, and you leave there and you're like
- 40:22Speaker 1: in a conk or the world, you know, and you're
- 40:24Speaker 1: with a group of people that are all like very
- 40:26Speaker 1: positive thinking at that point. But as you go back
- 40:29Speaker 1: to the regular world and then regular you know, downers
- 40:32Speaker 1: of the world, it kind of it slowly fades away.
- 40:36Speaker 1: So that's where I feel like I'm at with the
- 40:38Speaker 1: sheep on. But um coincidentally that the town nearby where
- 40:43Speaker 1: I was at is doing a big media project around uh,
- 40:47Speaker 1: the sheep that live in and amongst them, you know,
- 40:52Speaker 1: propagating them, keeping them around for the future. They've they
- 40:56Speaker 1: see challenges like a lot of you know, western town,
- 41:00Speaker 1: lack of winter range, too much development, et cetera. So
- 41:04Speaker 1: they contacted me to get a interview for the like
- 41:08Speaker 1: the hundreds perspective, which was great and I was, you know, happy,
- 41:11Speaker 1: happy to help out. That leads into we packed out
- 41:15Speaker 1: the whole cape on this animal and a sense of
- 41:20Speaker 1: great segue coming good from me or from you know,
- 41:25Speaker 1: I feel like you're building one up right my original plan.
- 41:29Speaker 1: You get you picking up on a Jordan's I don't
- 41:31Speaker 1: think so he's laying groundwork for big segue. I'm not
- 41:37Speaker 1: gonna let you guys down. It ain't about rattlers. My
- 41:42Speaker 1: original plan with that we packed out the whole hide
- 41:46Speaker 1: and Charlie and I are now experts in uh in
- 41:48Speaker 1: full sheep capes. But I'm just gonna yarrow the head
- 41:54Speaker 1: because I've said this before and it just happened when Tracy,
- 41:57Speaker 1: our colleague, was in here. People look at that thing
- 42:00Speaker 1: and they're like, Wow, that's cool, you know. I'm like, yeah,
- 42:03Speaker 1: pick it up. And when every it's it hasn't failed yet.
- 42:06Speaker 1: When someone picks that thing up, they are in utter
- 42:09Speaker 1: awe and then they feel the denseness and they the
- 42:13Speaker 1: weight of it all. So anyways, I just want to
- 42:15Speaker 1: have a euro amount. You can pass it, but you
- 42:17Speaker 1: want to be able to pass it around. Yeah. Through
- 42:19Speaker 1: the little bit of sheep hunting they have done of
- 42:22Speaker 1: come to know that sheepies are highly valuable. Once they're tan,
- 42:27Speaker 1: you're allowed to sell them. I'm guessing that people buy
- 42:29Speaker 1: them because there's got messed up because they're sheep tumbled
- 42:32Speaker 1: a thousand feet off a mountain or whatever. Someone cut
- 42:35Speaker 1: a bunch of holes in it as they're trying to
- 42:37Speaker 1: make the hide, maybe the hair slip because you know,
- 42:39Speaker 1: who knows whatever, but that like you can get thousands
- 42:42Speaker 1: of dollars sometimes with very little effort. I sold a
- 42:45Speaker 1: doll cape for a thousand bucks or something like that.
- 42:48Speaker 1: We sold a big orang cape. We only called one
- 42:50Speaker 1: person sold the Bighorn Cape for six hundred bucks and
- 42:53Speaker 1: that was like one phone call and no actually looking
- 42:57Speaker 1: for a purchaser. Yeah. So I was thinking if first
- 43:00Speaker 1: well let's just tan it and then something we'll put
- 43:03Speaker 1: it on them old meat Eater auction, auction House of
- 43:08Speaker 1: Bodities and uh talking to Garrett Long and talking to
- 43:13Speaker 1: uh the tax nermists, They're like, you know, we might
- 43:17Speaker 1: be able to raise a little bit more money. We
- 43:19Speaker 1: just turn it into a full sheet mountain to a replica,
- 43:22Speaker 1: and I feel like it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, same one.
- 43:27Speaker 1: It's very happy with us, mentioning him in the last
- 43:30Speaker 1: podcast John Hayes Tex number tax rmy Yeah, and uh, anyway,
- 43:34Speaker 1: so we don't know exactly what's gonna happen yet with
- 43:38Speaker 1: that hide and all of it, but the plan is
- 43:41Speaker 1: to somehow sell it for as much money as we
- 43:45Speaker 1: can and then hopefully donated directly to like a wild sheep,
- 43:50Speaker 1: you know, either habitat or reintroduction, whatever it might be. Projects.
- 43:56Speaker 1: They make casts, so they make like replicate casts and
- 44:01Speaker 1: it's it's amazing, like the colors and everything. So anyways,
- 44:04Speaker 1: get a replica made of it, get them stuffed with
- 44:07Speaker 1: the replica head on there and sell them. Uh, pointing
- 44:20Speaker 1: out the segwae thing. I'm gonna talk about that real quick. Okay,
- 44:25Speaker 1: uh oh another item in the Meat Eater Auction House
- 44:30Speaker 1: of Oddities. That's your segue. Yeah, it'll set up perfectly. Um.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Meat Eater Season ten, Part one is on Netflix now.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Starts out with I think the first episode is anelo
- 44:45Speaker 1: putting with Luke Hombs. So we're launching the Auction House
- 44:50Speaker 1: of Oodities, uh at the same time as the new
- 44:56Speaker 1: season comes up, right, because we've been talking about this
- 44:57Speaker 1: Auction House of Oddities for a long time. It's a
- 45:01Speaker 1: it's gonna be a rolling thing. And here's some of
- 45:03Speaker 1: the things that will go into the rig. So as
- 45:05Speaker 1: the Auction House Ofbities, it's live now. The Auction House
- 45:10Speaker 1: Ofbalities is live now. Money raised for the Auction House
- 45:13Speaker 1: Ofbities we'll go into are like access Enhancement Initiative, what's
- 45:22Speaker 1: been called historically land Access Initiative the Land Act, not
- 45:26Speaker 1: Access Enhancement Initiative, the Land Access Initiative. We get there
- 45:29Speaker 1: both ways. I think either way it'll go into that
- 45:32Speaker 1: and that becomes a pool of funds that then CAL
- 45:36Speaker 1: will look at various projects and figure out what to
- 45:38Speaker 1: do with the pool of funds access initiative things. So
- 45:41Speaker 1: we've done the Shiloh Pon thing, UM done some stuff around,
- 45:47Speaker 1: raise some money recently in a different thing around supporting
- 45:51Speaker 1: our states, UM private land public Access program. We're gonna
- 45:56Speaker 1: raise a whole bunch of money with this thing. If
- 45:59Speaker 1: you go on the auction house. Now, Yannie's thing isn't
- 46:02Speaker 1: there yet. The sheep's out there. But we have a
- 46:04Speaker 1: signed guitar from Luke Combs, and Luke used the guitar
- 46:07Speaker 1: in concerts, right, So signed guitar from Luke Combs Country Star,
- 46:14Speaker 1: the giant Bucky Bowl. So, Mike Buck Bowden, who's been
- 46:20Speaker 1: on the show, been on this podcast, he was in
- 46:22Speaker 1: the Close Calls audio book, he's been on Me Eat
- 46:26Speaker 1: a couple of times. He made us a giant birch
- 46:30Speaker 1: burrel bowl. Um. That bowl is in the auctionalite of odities.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Right now, we have a bottle of skunk essence that
- 46:42Speaker 1: me and Seth extracted from skunks with a hyperdermic needle.
- 46:46Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna use it in an act of vengeance.
- 46:49Speaker 1: I haven't identified a target. So if you've identified Yanni
- 46:55Speaker 1: hasn't starting never mind, it's too late. You'll have to
- 46:58Speaker 1: be You'll have to be on it because right now
- 47:01Speaker 1: it's pinned to the outside of my garage. I had
- 47:04Speaker 1: in our guest house, but my wife could smell it there,
- 47:06Speaker 1: so I pinned it to the outside of my garage.
- 47:08Speaker 1: We're gonna rebottle it and you can buy ounce of
- 47:11Speaker 1: Pierre Montana skunk essence. UM. I bought a needle from
- 47:18Speaker 1: you know, like a syringe for injecting cattle. You know
- 47:21Speaker 1: what I'm talking about, Jordan Um. But instead of injecting something,
- 47:24Speaker 1: we took something. By the way, suck that skunk smell
- 47:28Speaker 1: right out of there. A meatcraft or knife. Would that
- 47:32Speaker 1: dude sell one on eBay f or we did a
- 47:39Speaker 1: We did a limited run knife of the bench made
- 47:41Speaker 1: called the meat craft, and there I don't know, people
- 47:43Speaker 1: complaining about how expensive they were, but some dude just
- 47:46Speaker 1: sold one on eBay and it had like forty one
- 47:47Speaker 1: bids and went for fifteen or sixteen hundred bucks. There's
- 47:50Speaker 1: something like it's crazy. He was excited to get the knife.
- 47:53Speaker 1: He had the knife, and then it was like, boy,
- 47:57Speaker 1: I just have this nice knife sitting around I should
- 47:59Speaker 1: just try to get my money back out of it.
- 48:01Speaker 1: And then he felt so guilty with how high a
- 48:04Speaker 1: price was. Right he wrote in a letter that you bad.
- 48:09Speaker 1: You wanted to donate the money. We talked about it
- 48:13Speaker 1: and feeling guilty, and then you wanted to donate a
- 48:16Speaker 1: bunch of the money to a conservation group was looking
- 48:18Speaker 1: for guidance on how to spend which I'll tell you
- 48:20Speaker 1: if that's not a good indication of the quality of
- 48:23Speaker 1: folks we have uh intermingling with us, so that I mean,
- 48:27Speaker 1: come on, those are awesome people. Also in the auction
- 48:31Speaker 1: house is the tale of Yanni's very first pheasant. If
- 48:34Speaker 1: you're a fly tire, just I don't think that that's
- 48:37Speaker 1: necessarily an old pheasant, because I only killed my first
- 48:40Speaker 1: peasant and two falls ago. Yeah, and whoever get whoever
- 48:45Speaker 1: buys that thing, you know you can check it out
- 48:48Speaker 1: and put it on your wall off for a little bit,
- 48:50Speaker 1: but you should also tie some flies out of it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I think press it to the front of your very
- 48:55Speaker 1: own cowboy hat, you know. And there's the season ten package.
- 49:03Speaker 1: So if you if you watch the show the first
- 49:05Speaker 1: five episodes, which you're up now, we pulled items from
- 49:09Speaker 1: those episodes, okay, and it's in a package called the
- 49:12Speaker 1: Season ten package. In that string of episodes, you'll see
- 49:15Speaker 1: me and Yanni and Clay Newcomb hunting raccoons with the
- 49:19Speaker 1: hound dogs Clay's dogs, and we get a raccoon val
- 49:24Speaker 1: raccoons and mngus. That raccoons hide is back from the tannery.
- 49:31Speaker 1: That very raccoon is in the season ten package. The
- 49:36Speaker 1: backpack I wear all throughout the stone graacier backpack I
- 49:40Speaker 1: wear all throughout the season is in the season ten package.
- 49:43Speaker 1: In the season I used to FHF bin no harnesses
- 49:46Speaker 1: a brown one in a blaze orange one, both of
- 49:48Speaker 1: their those are in the season ten package. Clay Newcombs
- 49:54Speaker 1: ROSSI four ten wild West six Shooter four ten gun
- 49:58Speaker 1: I thinks what they call it is in the season
- 50:01Speaker 1: ten package. You'll see Clay shoot a squirrel off his
- 50:04Speaker 1: mule with that gun. Clay's Ratlin antlers from the Texas
- 50:09Speaker 1: Deer episode is in the package. I actually broke a
- 50:14Speaker 1: time off. If you're watching the show, you can see
- 50:15Speaker 1: the time fly off into the bushes. Those ratlin antlers
- 50:19Speaker 1: are in there, and we talked about those rattling antlers.
- 50:22Speaker 1: And the antelope skull that I kill on the episode
- 50:27Speaker 1: with Luke Combs is in the season ten package. And
- 50:29Speaker 1: you'll know it's guaranteed because it's a weird ass look
- 50:32Speaker 1: at antelope. So when you watch, it's like, that's a
- 50:36Speaker 1: weird antelope, and when you get the box you'll be like,
- 50:39Speaker 1: that's the same damn antelope. They didn't like slip some
- 50:42Speaker 1: the coon. I could see you being like, I don't know, man,
- 50:44Speaker 1: maybe they've pulled a fast one with the raccoon. But
- 50:46Speaker 1: I would look at bullet placement. The antelope skull is
- 50:49Speaker 1: dead nuts. No fast one. No, there's no fast one
- 50:52Speaker 1: anywhere in here. But there's no possibility of a fast one.
- 50:56Speaker 1: I got you got my carving knives in there on
- 50:59Speaker 1: that list. They're not yeah, but they're down. It's it's
- 51:02Speaker 1: a long refreshes, it refreshes all the time. I think
- 51:05Speaker 1: it's important to know that there's uh as current's notes
- 51:09Speaker 1: here say there's many auction phases. Yeah, so items go up,
- 51:14Speaker 1: they sit for two weeks, and then another block of
- 51:17Speaker 1: items goes up. We have original artwork, all kinds of
- 51:19Speaker 1: stuff coming up. We have stuff clear into December. This
- 51:23Speaker 1: is just like the initial thing, and then stuff comes in.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Peter Alonzo baseball player, He's sending in a bat and
- 51:33Speaker 1: a helmet signed, batted jersey signed. Some dudes from the
- 51:37Speaker 1: Pittsburgh Steelers are sending stuff signed Jersey. I have a
- 51:42Speaker 1: commissioned piece of artwork that I'm getting of wolves ripping
- 51:45Speaker 1: the guts out of a buffalo that's still standing in there.
- 51:48Speaker 1: And when that's done, a print will go into the
- 51:50Speaker 1: auction house of oodities. But we also have original artwork.
- 51:55Speaker 1: Uh Kelsey Johnson original bighorn sheep painting that auto tickle
- 51:58Speaker 1: Yanny's fancy. You know, I'm thinking I'm thinking about, you know,
- 52:02Speaker 1: people want to do uh mounts or replicas or whatever.
- 52:07Speaker 1: I'm thinking about asking her to paint it, yeah, or
- 52:11Speaker 1: maybe just sketch it. Maybe just do like a black
- 52:14Speaker 1: and white of that ramp standing on the side of that.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Then we'll put a print of that in the auction
- 52:17Speaker 1: house and maybe you on that rock with your gun
- 52:20Speaker 1: pointed in the sky, try and banging it live live
- 52:24Speaker 1: rounds laying next year. As for that guitar, here's a
- 52:29Speaker 1: quick He's not in the studio with us right now,
- 52:30Speaker 1: but um here here's a quick uh convo with Luke
- 52:34Speaker 1: about the guitar. Just so you know what you're getting
- 52:36Speaker 1: into when you go donate on this, Kayler, you tell
- 52:39Speaker 1: everybody about the guitar. He man, we got some guitars
- 52:42Speaker 1: in my manager's office. When somebody calls, go in, rip
- 52:46Speaker 1: a couple of tunes on it, myself, sign it, send
- 52:48Speaker 1: it in. Uh So get away. Man. There you have
- 52:51Speaker 1: to go to the meat Eater auction house of Boys
- 52:54Speaker 1: and find a guitar been played by Luke holmbs up
- 52:57Speaker 1: for auction now and remember the five dollars Neil and
- 53:01Speaker 1: Chester comes and plays the guitar too, sings some Chester
- 53:05Speaker 1: who who poo poo there it is I remember. When
- 53:16Speaker 1: the auction is closed, the winning bitter on Luke's guitar
- 53:20Speaker 1: can decide to kick in an extra five grand and
- 53:24Speaker 1: Chester the divester formally known as Chester the Tester, Chester,
- 53:32Speaker 1: the mole Lester, Chester, the investor who then divested and
- 53:39Speaker 1: became Chester the Divester. Chester will hand deliver the guitar
- 53:43Speaker 1: to your door and sing that crazy coyote song he's
- 53:46Speaker 1: always singing. Who Yep Woo Yep boo, and the cow
- 53:51Speaker 1: Boys says, if that's not worth five grand, listen, it's
- 53:54Speaker 1: gonna be a quick trip. It's gonna be weird. It's
- 53:57Speaker 1: gonna be weird for everybody. But Chester is gonna come
- 53:59Speaker 1: into your house. He's gonna sit down. You can have
- 54:02Speaker 1: any people you want to have over over. Chester will
- 54:04Speaker 1: sing that song, and the cole says, who You're gonna
- 54:08Speaker 1: have the nicest person in the world sitting at your house.
- 54:11Speaker 1: If you got dirty dishes in the sink, I guarantee
- 54:14Speaker 1: you'll do You'll probably do him. He's gonna walk out
- 54:16Speaker 1: of your house. He's gonna walk out of your life.
- 54:18Speaker 1: He's gonna go back to the airport and go back
- 54:20Speaker 1: to where he came from. But you can you'll know
- 54:22Speaker 1: when he's coming. You can invite people over and Chester
- 54:25Speaker 1: will play Luke Combs guitar and that's not the that's
- 54:32Speaker 1: not the first time Chester has played one of loose guitars.
- 54:35Speaker 1: That's right. You will see in the season if you
- 54:38Speaker 1: haven't watched it already. That well, Luke played some music,
- 54:42Speaker 1: but a bunch of guys sat around playing Luke's guitars,
- 54:45Speaker 1: and Chester did John Prine's Uh, cal you weren't there you? Yeah,
- 54:53Speaker 1: we can't remember what it was. Fishing whistle, No it's
- 54:57Speaker 1: um Oh shucks, Peabody's Coultrane. No, we'll come back to it,
- 55:04Speaker 1: finger finger picking song, he picks it. Oh, we'll come
- 55:09Speaker 1: back to her. Phil You know what, let's find out
- 55:11Speaker 1: what it is. We just plugged that song in, yeah,
- 55:13Speaker 1: and it plugged me in saying it like I've remembered gesture.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Hey everybody, this is Chester the Divestor, formerly known as
- 55:22Speaker 1: Chester the Investor, and this is the song It's all
- 55:26Speaker 1: the Best by John Prine. Say you drive a Chevy,
- 55:43Speaker 1: Say you're driving Ford. Say you drive around this county.
- 55:49Speaker 1: You just get bored, Then you change your mind something
- 55:55Speaker 1: else to do, Then your heart gets bull you change
- 56:06Speaker 1: It's man. Wish you happy, man, because I wish our
- 56:25Speaker 1: very own Samantha Bates declared Chester the nicest person in
- 56:28Speaker 1: the world. I think that prompts me to wonder who
- 56:31Speaker 1: was second. I got to four and still hadn't made
- 56:33Speaker 1: the list and I gave up. I'm like, okay, but
- 56:36Speaker 1: who's the fourth nicest person that says that? Just like
- 56:41Speaker 1: did I made the top three? I'm sorry. That's why
- 56:48Speaker 1: you have kids, at least for the first ten years
- 56:50Speaker 1: of their lives. They'll always give you that number one
- 56:53Speaker 1: spot on that subject. If you watch the new episodes
- 56:56Speaker 1: and have a question about what you're seeing or about
- 57:00Speaker 1: Chester the Divester, that's the beast. I wish I had
- 57:02Speaker 1: thought of that. Who thought a Chester the Divester. That's
- 57:05Speaker 1: actually Phil Listen. I wish I could take credit. It
- 57:09Speaker 1: was not me. I don't know who. I mean, it
- 57:11Speaker 1: would have been bod Brand for you. I felt like
- 57:13Speaker 1: we talked about that before I wrote it, But then
- 57:15Speaker 1: I was like, I thought that. I thought that it
- 57:18Speaker 1: was in my head. I thought Chester the Divester was
- 57:21Speaker 1: brand new. That's great. Uh. If you have questions about
- 57:24Speaker 1: what you see on the show, right in UM two
- 57:30Speaker 1: to our our our man Corey to reach him meat
- 57:33Speaker 1: Eater at the meat eater dot com. I don't know
- 57:36Speaker 1: subject line, just put a question mark or something and
- 57:39Speaker 1: then we'll get to that question. Uh, Jordan's what do
- 57:43Speaker 1: you think about that auction house? It looks pretty stacked.
- 57:47Speaker 1: I like that. That should be a slogan for it. Stacked.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Yeah sounds good. Here's a crazy ask news story, Um Hanks, Joe,
- 57:56Speaker 1: We're gonna get to you big time. I don't understand
- 58:00Speaker 1: this story. What about it? I just don't know, Like,
- 58:05Speaker 1: I don't get it. So some guys just killed at
- 58:09Speaker 1: five inch alligator pounds Eagle Lake, close to the Mississippi
- 58:13Speaker 1: Louisiana border. They bring it to a processor. Okay, processor
- 58:21Speaker 1: goes to butcher the gator. This processor always likes to
- 58:23Speaker 1: take a gander and see what is in the stomach.
- 58:27Speaker 1: You following, kel, What are you doing something different? Are
- 58:35Speaker 1: you not entertained? He likes to look in the stomach contents.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Calory knows the story. Bone. He always finds bones, hair, feathers,
- 58:46Speaker 1: and he finds stones. But in this one he finds
- 58:50Speaker 1: some unusual stones. It just doesn't make sense. This alligator
- 58:55Speaker 1: has in his stomach two stone projectile points. Well, no one,
- 59:04Speaker 1: they don't know that the other one is a projectile point. Yeah,
- 59:08Speaker 1: but it's a sorry take away, Johnny, I was just
- 59:16Speaker 1: just adding a little bit. But yeah, I think it
- 59:19Speaker 1: makes total sense. Explain to me how that makes sense.
- 59:22Speaker 1: Anthropologists estimates that that projectile points style was from five
- 59:26Speaker 1: to six thousand years ago. Correct, And you should know
- 59:30Speaker 1: that alligators don't live that long. But it says that
- 59:35Speaker 1: they he's got no pockets. When he finds that he's
- 59:39Speaker 1: got no pockets, where else is he going to keep it?
- 59:42Speaker 1: Maybe he was in the water bottom they of course
- 59:44Speaker 1: it was. But they take in rocks for the same
- 59:49Speaker 1: reason that birds do. If you read the whole article, right,
- 59:52Speaker 1: they use it to grind up well, and I got talking.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Were you not entertained? Listen, man, you don't I think
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: that's true. No, I didn't have time to read the
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: whole article. I got talking about something. So I think
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: it's it's coincidental that he happened to grab. But it's
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: it's not so coincident with dental as because it might
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: happen to a chicken too, that they picked up like
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: a very small bird point right, and mistook it for
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: some small piece of gravel and put it in their gizzard.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: But chicken only lives five years, right, alligators live? Come on, Oh,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I was even thinking longer, like some of these critters
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: are really old. Yeah, the one in the one in
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Florida that they've been pumping up. I want to say
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: it was like forty something. So he is he has
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: ingested lots of rocks over the course of his life
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: or her life. I don't know if it was a
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: female um alligator, but uh so, you know, I don't
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: know if it's hundreds or whatever, but like there's a
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: higher likelihood that he's going to have a projectile point
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: is belly than a than than a chicken? Right Here's
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: but it's still it's uncanny. It is there's two of them,
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: So you play like you're an alligator, okay, and you
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: walk out and go pick up a handful of rocks
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: and then we'll check what you got. Okay. It's like,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: what are the odds gonna be? Like, Oh, look I
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: picked up into the arrowhead. Yeah, it's uncanny. It's someone
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: canny in fact that we're covering it here today. Well,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: it's really nuts that there's two of them. We hope
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: no one lied, but you know, you'd want to know
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: where he's hanging out Eagle Eagle Lake. I don't know
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: what the the piece of it's like a tear drop shape.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: It's called a plummet, and uh scientists don't know exactly
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: what purpose is served, which is interesting. Fficient sinker, that's
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: what it looks like. That's what you think. It's like
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: an ancient You got two holes in it, but the
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: holes don't go all the way through. It's very I
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: should have read that article. Interesting. Did I be doing
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: such a better job as a host right now? If
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: I'd read that article, I'd be tearing it up. I'd
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: be like, one would think it was efficient sinker, but
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: the holes don't go all the way through. Instead, I'm like,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: it's a fision sinker. Oh, you guys, remember what um
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: so a stomach rock, which is what we're talking about,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: versus uh rock that's already been through the stomach, which
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: is called what it's gastro light or gastro lift. And
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: one one is currently in the stomach, well, the other
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: one is passed through the stea. Did you know that
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: from reading the article? No? I know. I knew that
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: because old outfit or buddy of mine and I'm always
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: talking about, had some gastro gastro lights. I can't remember
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: which one's which. That's the problem. It's like sleigh tights
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: of slag mites, man right exactly, like hanging right and
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: mites going up. So a rock that has passed through
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: the stomach is a gastro lift or gastro light I
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: can't remember, but yeah, that's what that's the name for him.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Great story, though I read it afterwards, I feel like
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I'm fairly checked out on it now. Yeah. So the
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: American alligator, Uh, there's some odd balls to this, but
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: we're typically like a max of years yeah, yeah, but yeah,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: you know, one thing I kicked around was like we
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: always call them dinosaurs, right, it's like living dinosaurs, living
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: fossils whatever, and they like, yeah, they do exist in
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: the fossil record, but like the American alligator that was
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: here during the time of the dinosaurs was like thirty
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: five ft long. It was a little Differently do they do,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: you know, if they travel far distances in their lifetime
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: or stay relatively local, because then maybe Steve will go
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: check out that water bottom. Yeah, no home bodies. Yeah,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: you know, they moved with high water, so they dispersed
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: like kind of similar to beavers Eagle Lake. Ye, see
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: me run around the arrowhead and necklace even though you
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: know where I've been, I don't want those Meglodon teeth too,
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: thank you. We covered I'm gonna try to do this
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: one quick. We covered how like seeing orange surveyor's tape
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: out in the woods and how it's I think it's unsightly,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: so we guys like tear it off and put in
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: your pocket. Got a couple of letters from people pointing
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: out why that's a stupid idea. A surveyor so someone
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: from the Forest Service, guy from the BLM talked about
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: don't just indiscriminately ripped down surveyor's tape. It's often there
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: because we're doing work. We're like marking timber, we're laying
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: out trail or corridors. We've paid people to go in
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: and place said orange tape. And you responded with, well
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: that's not what I was talking about, and that yeah,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: I yeah, so stand cracted um. And then they also
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: had some examples of when they've put up a bunch
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: of orange tape for a purpose and paid to get
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: it put there, and then they come back and it
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: is because someone done them the favor of taking it down.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: So bear it at mine only if it leads to
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: a wallow? Should you if it leads to a wallow,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: or you watch it for ten years and it sort
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: of starts to fade and turn white and drip onto
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: the ground something. But then there's also apparently biodegradable flagging
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: tape yeah, which one person encourages folks to buy instead
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: of the plastic. Way back in the hunter safety days,
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: they always said consider using toilet paper for flagging because
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: then that that degrades over time. People like, no, why
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: would that guy poop up in that tree? Uh, Cal's
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: dog almost died? Talk about that call. So it's all
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: controversial and like, the more I read into it covers yes,
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: so like flat out from multiple sources, Oh, dogs don't
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: die from rattlesnake bites. It's like, oh, it's an anomaly
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: if a dog all my years of being VAT only
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: had one dog die and that got bit right on
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: the throat and it was an airway issue, not there's
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: a swelling airway issue. And then um, the treatment side
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: of and venomation gets uh even gets into some controversy
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: as well. It's like anti venom and the production of
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: anti venom type products on the market are very limited
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: and they're very expensive and do they work? And it's
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: it's been pretty fascinating studying up on this stuff because
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: it all comes down to these biological factors that like
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: will never know. It's like the dog. So my dog,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: for instance, I've been around a lot of dead and
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: dying animals, and I'll tell you I was seeing many
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: signals and signs where I was like, Okay, prepare yourself,
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: this is this is, this is going this direction. I've
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: seen kel lose a dog. Yeah, damn here, it's not
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: it's not. I don't take it easy, and I'm assisty
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: when it comes to those dogs. And um, so snort
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: got bit right on the ear, uh, which is uh,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: it wasn't as bad as what's happening to it right now.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: It was less traumatic. I'll take the rattles. It was
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: less traumatic. Um And uh So this dog made her
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: biological system. She may be like a little more predisposed
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: to react to anti coagulants, which rattlesnake venom contains an anticoagulant,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: and she bled profusely like it's a highly vascular area.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Ears bleed like crazy. But this like bled to the
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: point where I had serious trouble stopping it bleeding out
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: of the fang holes. Yes, or did it like swell
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: up so much the blood was coming other places. Well,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: eventually both of those things. But I mean, think of
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: how tiny rattlesnake fangs are. Like we're talking like little
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: tiny pin pricks. But the uh you know, necrotic uh
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: factors and venom uh made the meat around those little
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: tiny pin pricks start to deteriorate fast. And then the
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: swelling was almost instantaneous. And uh she started bleeding out
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: of another spot on her ear and developed like this
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: giant puss pocket. And then the hair it was like
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: like actively falling, like actively falling off, like sping off
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: her ear. And this is on what kind of amount
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: of time. So she got bit just a little prior
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: to eleven am, and she ran back to me at
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: heel and had one little drop of blood on her ear.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: You didn't even know that she had been dead. I didn't.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I walked over to confirm that it was in fact
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: a rattlesnake, even though I was like, I know what
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: this is because you saw her ear bleeding. Yes, So
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I was walking out. She was within my line of sight,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: but I wasn't paying attention to her. I saw her
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: turn go yep, oh, I see and come back to me,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: but yeah, in a very casual fashion. But the thing
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: is like I was well within even my poor hearing
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: distance of the snake, and the snake hadn't rattled or
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: anything like that, which kind of leads into this other
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: conspiracy theory of rattlesnakes. It's like people are selectively harvesting
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: snakes that rattle. So if you're an indiscriminate rattlesnake killer,
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: you're finding snakes that rattle and then killing those snakes,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: leaving the snakes that do not rattle, and they think
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: they're driving natural selection. Yes, there's all sorts of stuff
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: out there. I would I would like you to take
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: that one to half a finger. I will half finger
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: will say like, it don't quite work that way. I
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: will tell you. I will tell you man. There's there's
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: an endless amount of people that care about their dogs.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Um so there's a lot of service to be done
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: on the house and wives of this stuff. I don't
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: want to keep a pamphlet be like, so your dog
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: up bit by rattlesnake? Yeah? Can I interest you in
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: a pamphlet? Because people love pamphlets. Um, So you started
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: swelling up what you do or the standard operating procedure
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: for a rattlesnake bite victim is make them calm, reduce
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: the heart rate. Ideally you're gonna have that bite area
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: below the heart. Um, and and like go ahead and
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: use are below the heart, below the heart so it's
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: not like you're the R E. S T type of
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: acronym or rice rather rest ice compression elevation. Um. Yeah,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: no one ever tells you to lower something down right, right,
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: So you want to like use gravity to keep uh
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the venom far from the heart and the really yeah,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: so did you cut an axe and suck the venom out? Kal? No? No,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: I didn't. I mean part of me was like, do
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: I just go full western here and cut this ear
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: off right now? Um? But then I determined that if
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: the dog is going to die, I'd much rather here
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: think that uh it was the snake that killed her
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: than me. Yeah, she'd go to the gravy and like that. Friends,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: we had a good thing going. Um. So yeah, so
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: it took nine hours to get her to the vat
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: and because you were away the hell yeah way, I
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: mean way the way the hell I mean like gates
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: and flat tires and busted trailers and all this like
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: horrible comedy of errors that just like you know and
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: just feel guilty because you know it's your job to
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: take care of these things. So by the time she
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: got to actual medical care, she had kind of gone
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: through these spells of being like very much not okay,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: two oh oh, the dog's gotta acting fine too, then
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: very much not like oh, I recognize this, this isn't good.
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: So then um, ultimately, how I got the bleeding to
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: like subside a little bit is I got a a
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: quick clot package like Doug that that was like my
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: last thing. I used every bit of material in my
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: first aid kit and uh and got that like plastered
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: to her ear, her ear plastered to her head. Ah,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: And keep in mind, like that ear is like if
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: you if you like waved a feather on that thing,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: that dog would like scream as if she was being skewered.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: And it was just hor endous deal. But we had
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: this situation where she was like kind of going into shock.
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: So UH had a super highly elevated heart rate, had
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: lost a bunch of blood. The her overall ability to coagulate.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Her blood's ability to coagulate was basically like not existing
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: at that point and then like things just kind of
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: got more complicated. We were nine plus hours out from
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: when she got hit by the snake. A lot of
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: folks that you talked to, you say, like an event
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: AND's the most effe acted within two hours? And then
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: you have this like law diminishing returns and it's very
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: expensive stuff. Um, and a dog this size, she's forty
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: seven pounds. She she probably would have been hit with
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: like four doses of antivenom and their four hundred and
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: the type that she had is not like the crazy
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: expensive stuff and it's still four hundred and some dollars
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: a bag. So this is ivy um solution that's that's
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: pre frozen. So we kind of have this this talk
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: of like should she actually get this stuff? It's like
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: hard to get some years. It's just like non existent. Um.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: It's it can be kind of controversial because it's like
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: places that have money, can you get it? Um? Because
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: you know, but also it's like a supply and demand
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: thing too. It's like places that don't have a lot
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: of money probably don't have a lot of people that
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: are going to pay for it anyway. UM. And so
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: you know, I got her up to sun Valley Animal
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Hospital in in Hailey, Idaho, where my previous dog that
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: you mentioned, the big Fish, received care and I really
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: liked those folks, so UM got her up there after
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: calling going through towns and calling that offices and having
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: people be like nope, don't bring her here, because I
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: was just like, yeah, doctors went home. Really well, I
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: understand why would they not want the dog in there?
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I just don't. I don't know. I do not know.
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: So you're like, my dog got bit by rattlesnake, it
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: might be dying, and they'd say yep, they're like, oh sorry,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: it's so weird, like too much for them to deal with,
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: too much for them to deal with too late in
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: the day, like they must not take like whatever the
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: Hippocratic oath is or something for dog people man um,
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: And but I mean also keep mind, like there's a
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: lot of folks that I've talked to you here like
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: oh yeah, dogs don't die from from rattlesnake bites. Right,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: It's like, oh, well, overblown. And I bumped into a
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: cowboy on the way out, super nice dude who's like, hey,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: how's going because I told you we trespassed through this
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: ranch to do that sheep hunt and uh, so, like
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: I felt obligated to stop and talk to this guy,
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: even though was the last thing I wanted to do. Like, hey,
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: dog got bit by rattlesnake. He's like, oh, yeah, one
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: of my dogs got bit earlier this year. Um god,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I wish I could remember the exact words he used,
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: but they were fantastic. But little cow dog about the
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: size of Snort anyway, got bit on the leg um, which,
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: as he can imagine, the legs a lot easier to
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: keep below the heart than the ear is. And uh,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, I got real serene for a while
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: or something like that was interesting choice of words. But
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: the dog got real, real mellow for a while. Then
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: she lost a bunch of flesh, but now she's fine,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: you know. And that he didn't even consider trying to
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: get that dog all the way out of there to
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: a vet. Um, and that that does happen quite a bit. Um,
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: And everybody thinks they're dogs super special. I obviously think
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: this dog is very special, but from what I saw
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: special come on, so uh, I gotta take Snort home
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: with an ivy bag full of fluids, uh, and my
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: my place and catch him was vacant at the time,
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: so I gotta run up there and camp out on
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: the floor, which is exactly how I moved into the
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: police I would have slept at the bat. I was like, Oh,
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: here's the deal. If you guys aren't gonna monitor overnight,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I will. Um. So, but they sent me home with
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: an ivy bag, gave me the MA math on what
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: they wanted with the anti venom stuff in it. Not
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: with anti venom at that point, because like we have
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: this talk and there's this discussion of where she's at,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: like near shock. The number one thing that we need
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: to do is reduce your heart rate. There are some
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: side effects that are possible with anti venom, and it
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: could be negative enough to kill the dog. In the
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: state that she's in. It's possible. Um. And then we
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: had just like this horrible night where I was trying
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: everything I could to make the dog comfortable, the dogs
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: like very much uncomfortable. UM doing like a lot of
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: again like dying dead dog, things like trying to get
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: up and move and then quitting and then like oh,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: remembering that it had to be somewhere and then quitting
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: and all these things. So eventually I unhooked her from
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: the ivy and she just crawled out laid on my
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: chest and I was like, all right, like this is
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: the way you want to go out, This way I
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: want to go out type of thing. And we both
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: slept for like an hour and a half. And at
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: this point, her head is swollen like all the way,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: like one eye is totally swollen over. Um. She's in
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: a lot of pain, a lot of discomfort. Her neck
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: is fully swollen down into her chest, and then anywhere
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: where that adema is where that swelling is is also
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: very very sore like, and she's like screams to the
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: touch of it, and uh yeah, it was just just crappy.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: But then I get up and the folks at the
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: vet office were awesome and they're like, yeah, we just
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: just come in at eight am, so brought her in
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: and and then they gave me their phone numbers too.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: They're like, yeah, check her heart rate every hour and
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: if it gets if it hits two, call me and
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: we'll we'll come down and see what we can do
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: type of thing. And so, you know, dogs have fast
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: heart rate and and I'm digging around for femeral artery
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: trying to get her pulse and it's just like very
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: feathery and just like not a good not a good
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: strong feel to it, and it's just ripping. And so
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: I'm spending like forty minutes checking the pulse right because
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: I'm like trying to do averages to see like where
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: we're ending up, and uh eventually get her down to
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: the vat they have. It is the busiest VETS office
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: you've ever seen. There's people freaking everywhere. It's super busy,
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: and they basically just like clear us out a spot
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: in the middle of like this all purpose room where
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: it's like business administration going on. In this corner, UH
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: docs writing notes on there animal patients, in this owner
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: there's a little uh clinic table and then like snort,
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: and I just sitting there and every twenty minutes somebody
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: swings in there like Okay, how are we doing? And um,
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: her body is not absorbing any of those fluids. She's
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: not really drinking, she's really not want to eat anything.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: She's not she's got no outs, you know, No, she's
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: not pn she's not poop on even though like they
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: like ultrasound or bladder and she's like, yeah, she should
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: really want to pee um to the point where they
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: were gonna try to catheterize her, but they didn't want to,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: you know, like that's not a painless process, and but
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: they can't put her under because that could kill her too.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: At that point, and then they're they're constantly like analyzing
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: her blood and what was really really wild is her
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: blood becomes so protein to efficient that it's actually like
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: sucking the protein out of her muscles. And so it
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: is just the wildest thing man. In In twenty four hours,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: she has like lost noticeable muscle mass around her hips
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: and it's and she's like a bony you know, like
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: looks like a neglected dog and um. And at that point,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: the doc, uh, because as you guys know, I like
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: to ask a lot of questions. The doc comes in
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: and she's like, hey, I researched this study on otters
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: mustelids where they found uh, you know, benefits to anti
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: venom out to the twenty four hour period. She's like,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: I think we have to try it at this point
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: because her blood is just like not good and again,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: like her bodies not absorbing any of the fluids in
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the in the ivy, so like all the things, and
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: she won't eat and drink and all the stuff, so
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: nothing's really going our way. Um, so I'm like, yeah,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: I don't know, let's give it a shot. And so
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: it was just really really wild that one bag of
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: anti venom um you could kind of see like almost
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: almost immediate effects. And it was really funny, like all
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the people at the vet clinic would like keep bringing
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: by treats, like different dog treats, so we had like
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: cat food and cat treats and super fancy like paleo
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: dog treats, and oh you know, down to like just
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: fat you know, like beef trim fat dog you know,
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: like canned dog food stuff all the things, and everybody
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: would be like, well, maybe she'll like that, and maybe
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: she'll like this, and the dogs like not into any
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: of it, and then she starts like eating a little bit,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: and then you could kind of trigger with some Pavlovian
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: type responses, so like if you drop dog food on
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: the floor and your dogs like, oh, I gotta get that.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: So I could like drop some dog food in front
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: of her and be like tink tink tink on the
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: table and she'd be like ah and eat like a
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: piece of kibble. It'd be like a piece of kibble
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: and a piece of kibble. So then um, yeah, she
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: started kind of coming around on that stuff. And again
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: like it's really wild. So she got bitten. Probably she
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: got bitten by a great Basin rattlesnake, which the state
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: of Idaho doesn't even recognize as like the snake for
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: that region. But and and like the research that I did,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: you know, it was really like surveys from as far
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: as rattlesnakes go. And and talking with Dr Bob Reid,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: who we've had on the show, Um, he's like, yeah,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: that's what those surveys would have set because we weren't
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: quite into dividing out what rattlesnake is what at that point.
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: And um, so the anti venom that she got isn't
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: even based off of the venom that she received, but
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: like from what I saw, like that's the thing that
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: like turned things around. Um, but that's you know, it's
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: like a generalized serum basically, like you take this very
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: general venom and this very general venom from these two
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: different snakes, and then you combine them in a sheep,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: and then you take the antibodies that that sheep makes,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: and then you create anti venom off those antibodies. But
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: all that was just yeah, incredibly interesting and and uh,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: you know, it's like we had like this monumentous occasion
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: when like myself and this vet tech Sarah walked the
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: dog around and all of a sudden she peed and
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: pete and pete and pete and bed and it was
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: like a holy sh it moment, you know. I was like,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: oh my God, thank God, like something good happened, you know.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: And then yeah, just like lots of rest, and then
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: it was like a holy ship she ate something like voluntarily,
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: and then um, it was just like this really wild
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: recovery scene of like she's doing better than expected after
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: doing worse than expected for like this big crash. And
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: then it was like, okay, now we can worry about
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: her ear, like the actual site of the women, and
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: like it was like this attitude of like, boy, it
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: would be great to save the ear, but if we don't,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: who cares. She's got to And then one of the
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: vets took took a look like this very seasoned that
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: takes a look at it, and he's like, just cut
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: it off. Just it's like, well, you know, there's a
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: lot of good like I think there's some good stuff there.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: And keep in mind it. I mean it's black, like
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: the ear is black. It's like crispy on the edges. Um,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: it's got this huge puss fluid pocket in the middle
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: of it. Um. It's you know, like really black around
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: the bite wounds, like if you touch it with a
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: little antiseptic cloth, like skin and hairs like sluffing off
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: of it and h and the this vet Dr Heidi Wogue,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: who was awesome. Um, she's like, hey, you know there's
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: there's some good meat here and stuff. The senior VT,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: the most senior vets, like, you can take care of
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: that thing for a month and we'll still have to
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: cut it off. It would be good for the auctions
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: of bodies. Man desiccated snort ear um, and uh. It
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: was like, so like you gotta be a nurse for
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: a month and you don't know. I'm like, yes, yeah,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: sign me up. So you're still in that phase right now,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: Still in that phase right now, but like obviously you're
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: gonna keep the ear now right Yeah, Like that the
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: pus pockets started draining. Um. There's a de bridament is
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: a super fancy word I learned for picking up scabs. Um.
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: So there was a lot of like gently cleaning the
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: ear and getting rid of like excess stuff and then um, yeah,
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: I mean it looks awesome now and and it's just
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: kind of like a big bald ear and uh bad
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: dogs can't tell stories, everybody. Yeah, I'd be like, let
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: me tell you what this jackass put me through. Because
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: the dog get to the part where like over here's
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: you talked about cutting its ear off right right, It's
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: like and then guess what cal uh so much better
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: coming from the dog. So now like really right now,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: I'm like the most worried about having a bald eared
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Labrador Retriever and like freezing cold water and air tamps
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: in January, put a mitten on there, a whole ahead
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: mitten um which yeah, which all roads lead back to
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: Garrett Smith dirt Math. It was like, Hey, called this
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: buddy mine and he's got this company called rex Specs,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: and uh, I'm gonna get a set of hearing protection,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: tactical hearing protection for her, which is like a head
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: muff that has two big pads on it. And he
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: said he can remove one of the pads for hearing
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: and I can keep the other one on there on
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: the bad ear for installation. Yeah, that's good. I wouldn't
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: thought of that. But yeah, if you go out and
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: like you know, sub zero tamps, mad dogs, hear is
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: gonna be cooked. Yeah, not cooked, the opposite of cooked,
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: exactly exactly. Yeah, that's kind of the the saga snort.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: And then I got a call from cal uh while
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: this is all going on, and he just told me
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: to keep my mouth shut. Yeah, he's trying to control
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: a messaging. Yes, yes, you got like three podcasts out
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: of it. Well, I got I got text messages from
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: Steve that are like, hey, call me. Hey you alive? Hey,
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: are you okay? Like, oh my god, it's a better call. Um. Yeah.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: So but you know, all I've been talking about is
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: this dog, like going and hunting with this dog and stuff,
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: and so it was like, oh yeah, man, so but now,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: so we had like our first like serious training day yesterday,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: and I got back to um letting her know that
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: even though she's very special, that doesn't mean that she's
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: uh not going to be disciplined. And then the day
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: before that, we took a real long walk and she
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: found uh covey of three Hungarian partridge didn't have any
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: shells in my gun for the first two birds that
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: got up. Managed to get a shell in the chamber
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: for the third one and shot at uh and she
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: retrieved it and that was our first bird of the year.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: So awesome, youth youth duck coming right up. Yes, yes, okay,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Jordan's hi, Steve, Um, you've been bit by rattlesnak. Let's
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: try not a good segue, I have not. But you
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: grew up on a cattle ranch in Nebraska where there
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: are a lot of rattlesnakes. Did you see a lot
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: of Yeah? Yeah, I remember going like when I was little,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: we'd go over there was a couple of dens that
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: were in like along the creek bottom. There's like some
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: pine trees, like rocky outcropping type stuff and like, and
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: there was a couple pretty established ins and I remember
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: going in and um and uh, yeah. Dad would just
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: shoot him with like twenty two with the bird shop
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: at Oh. That was like in the springtime. And then
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: I think, are you folks still in the cattle ranching business? Yeah,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: they're still there on the family places. Yeah, we'll go back,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: I'll go back. I think like you become a cattle rancher. Yeah,
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: I think, really, yeah I do. Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Are your folks surprised he became a hunting guide? Yeah?
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: I think my dad thought I was like maybe didn't
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: know exactly what I was getting into. And when I
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: think when I told him, like, hey, this is what
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: I want to do, he was kind of like, you
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: like doing that, but are you gonna doing that for
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: like a long time? And he was concerned that you
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: wouldn't enjoy it or he was concerned that you were
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: being frivolous. He was concerned I wouldn't enjoy it. I
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: were liked hunting so much. He was afraid I was
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: going to overdo it, burn myself out. Got it? Hunt? Yeah?
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: What town in Nebraska is all this happened to? This
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: is in Rushville, northwest corner. So we're just spy Shadrin.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: How old were you started? How old were you when
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: he started a hunt? Oh? Man, I shot my first
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: year when I was twelve. I can't I couldn't even
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: tell you how old I was when I like shot
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: my first rabbit. It's a little twenty two, but I
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: couldn't have been I don't know eight. Is that too young? No,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: I think it was like then, yeah, eight, And then
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: there's pictures of me with a cork gun when I
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: was really little, like trying to shoot turkeys out the
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: window and whatever. Any lots. Yeah, apparently there was. There
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: was a time I was on a tricycle chasing turkeys
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: down the driveway with a core gun over the handleboy. Yeah.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: So but but tell, like more clearly, tell folks about
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: your guiding business before we kind of really cover off
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and how you got into the whole thing. Yeah. So, yeah,
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: it's called running water hunting. I started it basically when
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: I was in high school, took a little hiatus over
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: my college years, and then went back to it. Um
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: based out of northwest Nebraska on our family cattle ranch
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: at Lease, a couple of ranches that surround us as well.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: And yeah we just hunt deer, turkeys and not really
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: antelope anymore. Um, but yeah, it's basically it. How did
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: you get started in high school? So I kind of
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: just picked it up. So I grew up with always
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: having other hunters around because like my you know, parents
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: would have family friends or would ever come out and
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: they were always from out of state. They would come
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: out and there's like a yearly deal, and I think
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: I would just annoy them mostly, um but I always
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: wanted to go and they would reluctantly take me, I think.
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: And then we had an outfitter from town that leased
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: the place for a little while, so then he was
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: bringing to people and I would do the same thing.
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: I would just go down and like hang out with
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: him type of deal. And then were you bummed about that?
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: That that was your hunting spot? But then now someone
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: was leasing it. Yeah, that was an issue at one point,
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: especially when I got older. But Dad was always very like, hey,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: this is a stipulation, like my kid's gonna hunt type
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: of the deal. Yeah, so are you the only kid?
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: I have two younger sisters. Yeah, but I'm the oldest
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: of three, so so we uh yeah. I started doing that,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: and then when that outfitter left, just decided it really
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: wasn't his thing. Then I thought I can do this.
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: And when I was a senior in high school, I
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: booked hunters off of Craigslist, which sounds like a really
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: safe thing. What what year you talking about? This would
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: be two thousand and eleven, yeah, and two thousand eleven,
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: two thousand twelve, and so I remember there was like
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: these two dudes I think from like Missouri, really nice guys.
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: Book for like thousand bucks came out when you ran
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: an ad ran a freaking ad on craigslist. Yeah, school,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: and I think it was just like five day white
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: tail hunt in Nebraska with the high schooler called me up.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: I don't know if they knew that. Did you run
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: it like on the national Craigslist? I think so? Honestly,
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: I don't even remember. No, I think it was just
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: in the Nebraska Panhandle like section of the craigslist, you know.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: And then I said like five dayl white five day
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: white tail hunt. Yeah, five day white tail hunt with
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: a muzzleloader. Would you bucks? Did you put that down? Yeah?
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: And they where your phone? Yeah, my phone number, and
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: they called me You're going to be great yea, or
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: this is gonna be really bad your parents. You know
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: that dishwashing deal? Uh? I got a business now I'm
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: buying the dishwasher. Yeah. So yeah, they came out. How
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: many calls, dude, I don't even remember. I think those
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: were like the only two guys I think called and
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: you're like, hey, is this legit? And yeah, I wish
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: I remembered that more what you say. I just like
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: told him to run down, Like, hey, I think this
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: is what kind of what I told you, Like, this
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: is what the doer like to do. This is how
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: we like to hunt them. Like you have a place
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: to stay, meals are on you and yeah come yeah,
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: yeah we have a this is my class schedule. Yes
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: seriously that yeah that you had to play some serious
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: hooky to do this thing. Oh yeah, well we so
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: I started. I always started. Um. I tried to start
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: the hunts on like get the guys in on Friday,
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: go like show them around. I would hunt with them
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: Saturday Sunday and then they would kind of have the
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: like kind of feel for the place and then I
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: would send them on their own for like Monday, Monday,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: texting them in class and stuff. Yeah, like keep in track.
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: It's very crazy. Yeah, it's like enterprising. Well, the scary
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: thing is like I just didn't think there was anything
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: wrong with that. You have any kind of I mean
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: you have to like no licensing or anything. No, well
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: you don't have to have guide licensing in Nebraska. Were
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: you ever in class and getting a text messages? It's like, hey,
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: come help us track this thing. I don't think that happened. No,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: they eat shot a buck, I remember, and it died
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: like right next to their like easy to get to. Yeah,
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: they were super pumped. I still have them on Facebook,
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: I think. So those are your your first two clients.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: Those are my first two clients. Yeah. Yeah. So right
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: when I graduated high school, we had another like an
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: outside outfitter come in and offer us up. And that's
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: when I just got displaced again. I did get displaced.
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: And that's when Dad was like, you need to focus
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: on college instead of probably this situation, and um, how
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: do you argue with that type of deal? I guess?
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: So I did that for went to college and then
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: studied what So I studied at business? Yeah, and so
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: I went no. So then this is where it gets
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: interesting because when I was in that same like senior year,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: when I was trying to start this outfitting business, I
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: was also really intrigued with like filming and doing that
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: kind of thing, and so I started writing for like
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: a little self filmed website and so started kind of
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: my media business if you will. Then as well, and
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: when I got to college, I started filming buddies and
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: like just putting together a little videos and I was
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: at a show and there were some guys like the
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: Preferts that have like the blue like ranch equipment, like
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: bucking shoots and stuff like that. At the rodeos Um
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: they have a company producing ranch equipment. Yes, yeah, yeah,
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: it's called the whole company is called Prefert And I
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: have a cousin that it was a Rodeo judge knew them,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: brought them in. They had just started their own TV
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: show at the time for Hunting Um, and so kind
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: of got in with those guys, and then they knew
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: of this other company out of Cody, Wyoming. It's like
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: a gun manufacturer and they I saw them at a
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: show at a hunting show where we were actually trying
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: to sell hunts for this other outfit or that at
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: least our place, and I just went up and started
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: talking to him and the guys like if we ever
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: looked for a videographer, we'll let you know. And of
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: course I'm like, I'm never going to hear from them.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: And they called me in like August that year and
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: wanted me to film start filming sheep hunts for the
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: show in Wyoming because they were crazy. I mean, how
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: many how many sheep hunts they going on. Um that
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: I mean, so that first year, I think I filmed
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: three two or three, and then the next year I
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: think I filmed like six in Wyoming and then yeah,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: just because those guys were guiding and they had clients
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: that wanted it filmed or what was it. Yeah, So
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: they had a rifle manufacturer and so they were sending uh,
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: like their rifles on hunts with people. And one of
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: the guys that owned it a outfitting and outfitting business. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: and so there was like a big marketing Yeah, different
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: hunters all the time. You started documenting those trips, yeah, yeah,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: So I started doing that. So I went through my
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: first year of college and then my second year, I
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: went through my see how this go? I started my
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: second year, I was just about ready to start my
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: junior year of college, my junior fall, and they um
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: offered me this thing, like to go and like film
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: for the fall. Well, I'm like, I can't do both.
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: I can't go to college and film. And oh I
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: think Dad was very have you at first with that
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: decision either, But I just like dropped all my classes
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: in college really went and filmed, yeah, for the show
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: for the first fall, and then I went back to
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: college for that spring and then that's it. I've been back,
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: your parents passed. I need to finish. No, I don't
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: think so, not now that you're going to go finish
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: Now I've done. Okay, No, there was a point. Now
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: probably nothing do it? What do you like if you
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: get bored? Actually to sit in the class? Now once
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: you got to Chase and not sitting there, you're sitting there. Yeah,
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: So I yeah, I ended up going this does this
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: goes back to the hunting a little bit. The air
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: of the outfitting business. The that outfitter that came in
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: from the outside, um kind of have how to fallen
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: out and he moved on falling out Um just kind
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: of some landowners in the area. It just like wasn't
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: meshing type of deal. So he moved on, and then
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: we had didn't have anybody coming out to the ranch anymore.
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: Well by that time, I had taken a full time
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: position with that TV show and Cody, so I had
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: moved And so then I started running water hunting like
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: officially as an LLC, and I just booked people in
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: a semi guided and they would come in. I would
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: like have all the tree stands, setting whatever during the
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: summer and run cameras as much as they could, and
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: then my dad would just kind of show them around, like, hey,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: this is where you park. Um. I would send him
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: on xpins with UM where to go basically like where
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: the stands were set. And then I just ran it
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: as a semi guided for those couple of years. And
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: then I ended up quitting the TV show and I
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: moved back to Nebraska. And why did you quit the
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: TV show just to go focus on all this stuff? Yeah,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: it was just time to go, you know, Like I
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: had been there full time for two years and actually
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: filming with him for like four seasons, and it was
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: just I'd run its course. You're like on a salary. Yeah,
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: I was on a salary, Yeah, for a couple of years,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: and going to eight to five job kind of sucks.
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: That was an eight to five job, it was, Yeah,
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: it was an eight five And then like I would
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: film and then when even when we weren't filming, like
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: I was still expected to be in the office puction
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: and yeah, yeah, I would do like everything that I filmed.
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: I pretty much did all the post on and then
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: you know there's a couple of the people that worked
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: in there as well, but yeah, there was a lot
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: of there was a lot of downtime. Then I didn't
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: really need to be in there, you know, and I
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: just wanted to get back, and I guess helped add
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: with the ranch too a little bit, and just it
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: was just to move on. So your folks play hardball
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: with you at all, where they're like, now, Jordan's this
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: is like a reasonable cut for your folks as far
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: as like you don't get it, just charge money and
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: we don't get a piece. Yeah, I know, they don't
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: give you like a hand. They don't give you like
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: a friendship deal. Oh I think that I get a
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: friendship Okay, but you're still paying. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, yeah, yeah,
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: I wouldn't get a free ride for sure. And then
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: like I go back now and I helped Dad, like hey,
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: all summer. So then I think there's a little bit
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: of trading that goes on for like work for you.
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: But then you kind of like you gradually start doing
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: like more guiding though, right, yeah, more more involved once
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: you were back more involved. Yeah, then that's when I
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: started doing like fully guided, including the meals being there
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: all the time and I mean essentially being able to
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: charge more for that, and how you find and how
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: did when you went back to start doing it more seriously,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: how would you find customers or clients? Honestly, a lot
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: of it was word of mouth. UM still put some
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: I've gone away from Craigslist, but I have put a
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: few ads on eBay before and that's actually a pretty
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: good way of generating some some things there. And then
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: there was just other like guide fitter I think is
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: a website. Yeah, and a lot of a lot of that,
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: but most of it's like repeat people or just word
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: of mouth. How many people can you hunt every year?
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: I take for deer, I take like twelve totals? What
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: I like to take like twelve between twelve and fifteen
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: between archery, muzzloader and then the rifle season. Have you
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: got them all yourself? Sorry? Oh you're fine. I had, Yeah,
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: I had before. I do have a kid that's going
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: to guide for me this fall to help me out
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: a little bit. Last year was crazy. I just like
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: I had still have the media business and then the
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: hunting business, and it was all very much like back
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: to back. I'd get back from a film trip on
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: like a Friday, as the other hunters were rolling in
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: and then we'd start guiding on like a Saturday or
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: something like that, and it was just it was too much.
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: So I got a guy into help this year. Some
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: of the legis logistical stuff. If you had to if
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: you had to decide between doing the media business and
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: the hunting guide business, what would you do? Well, let me,
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: let me, let's do a three wak you had to
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: do like cattle, yeah, hunting guide, show business, and whatever
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: you picked you had to stick with the rest of
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: your life. Oh. Man, I would say meaty business because
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: I think so, go on, I don't know. That's a
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: hard one, Steve. They're all pretty split. They're all pretty
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: split right now in my life anyways, evenly split. But yeah,
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: the media stuff, I think mostly because that's where I do,
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: like all my Western hunting, I got you, that's because
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: it keeps you out and engaged doing new stuff. Yeah,
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: It's like takes me all over, which is kind of cool.
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: So yeah, so do you freelancer people know? I do? Yeah. So,
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: my the ranch name is Running Water Ranch, and so
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: I spun off of that with Running Water Hunting, and
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: then I did the same with the media. So it's
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: running water media, got it? Yeah, how far into the
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: future are you booked on the white tail hunts? Uh?
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: This year's full. That's pretty that's pretty much it. Um.
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: I've got some people that are always like come back
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: year to year. So archeries usually fairly full, muzzloaders usually
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: really full. And two years ago you killed some giant
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: white tail there and muzzleloader bavery Yeah, yeah, he was
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: like they scored. He's like one seventy eight or something
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: like that. It's a big white Yeah. I think be
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: booking lots of folks with a hundred and seventy white
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: tail coming falling out of your pockets. I wouldn't say
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: falling out of my pockets. I really try to, like
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: I really try to be like conservative with selling some
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: of these hunts, like especially on the size and stuff.
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: Just you know, like we do have some Muleteer two
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: and our tags are good for either. But there are
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: some guys that have called me and said I want
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: a one eighty Muleteer bust and I'm kind of like, yeah,
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: you don't want to come here then, because it's not
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: that's not fun selling things like that. I don't know,
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: it's interesting like that outfitter that lesare placed at the time,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: like we would get handed. I guided for him as well,
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: and like we would get handed people that you don't.
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: It took me a while to realize you don't really
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: know what they got sold. You just know what you're
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: supposed to be guiding and what's out there. And it's
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: really awkward after they have a set of expectations that
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: you would never give them. Yeah. Absolutely, it's really awkward.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: So I try really hard not to do that. Right,
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: you'd be like, that's a really good deer maybe like
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: what dear, Yeah exactly, they're like, well, we're all the
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: big deer. I had that conversation. It wasn't very much fun. Yeah,
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: it wasn't good. So I try to stay very much
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: in the We like to keep a small like tighten nit,
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: you know group when we're there, like four people tops
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: is all will take at a time. And intimately, yeah,
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: I don't want like a huge camp. I wanted more
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: to be like I want to say, more like family,
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: but kind of more of like and you're in there
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: cooking and everything too. I did cook last year a
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: little bit. Yeah, I wouldn't say it was great. Steve
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: but it got the job done. Yeah. Yeah, so yeah,
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: we're including all that. I saw a thing recently on me.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: It wasn't recently. I'll scroll into your social media stuff.
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: You had the thing where you weren't posting trail camp
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: photos anymore. Oh yeah, yeah, we had a deal. Yeah,
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: we just had a deal. Whereas like, I think we're
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: we're posting a lot of pictures and I think people
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: people were like moving in on the neighboring ground that
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: technically isn't supposed to be getting hunted, but they know
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: nobody's really out there, so they Yeah. So yeah, I
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: don't know, because that's kind of like an advertisement thing
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: for if you're a dear guide, right, yeah. Do you
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: view that by putting up what you're seeing on trail games?
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: Do you view that as like a marketing thing or
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: is it just because you're interested in it? Uh? Pretty Yeah,
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: just like me posting trail camera pictures. Yeah, I mean,
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: are you're doing that the show people like, hey, here's
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: what's going on, Here's what's going on, like this year
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: type of deal Like yes, um, but it does have
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: a little there's another edge to that sword, which is
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: you advertise, Yeah, you just then people like around know
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: what's there, and there's places that you can kind of
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: slip in from the back or whatever. That's I don't
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: know the nicest way to say that, just like Poacher's trespassing,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: what it is stupid things? Yeah, yeah it does. So
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: story Big Deer make people stupid. Mm hmm. So now
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: what uh who? When you're filming, who do you work for?
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: Do you do do people? If do you have clients
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: like that they're going hunting and they want to like
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: document the hunt and you'll hire on and go document
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: their hunt. Yeah, pretty much. So Yeah, there's like there's
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: a lady of film for the last couple of years
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: has bought like Governor Sheep tags. Um, I'll go film
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: her on those. Um Like Rockslide dot com is a
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: website that I've written for for a long time and
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: they wanted to start doing like, you know, just doing
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: good films with their hunts to help I think with
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: their you know, brand and image and stuff. So I'll
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: go do those. Um. Crispy Boots have done some stuff
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: for UM. But yeah, it's just things like that kind
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: of whatever companies them I'm involved with if they need
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: somebody to go with the murder, take product pictures or
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: whatever I can go. He Uh. I was gonna say,
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: how did you flip that? Because normally sounds like you're
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: behind the camera, you're guiding, but you just got done
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: with a pretty special hunt where you got to be
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: behind the gun. That got flipped. That I got flipped. Yeah,
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: So that was a deal through Six Hour, who I
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: started working with a couple of years ago. Yeah, and
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: so they've got they've got a rifle coming out that
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: we wanted to do. It's, um, we wanted to do
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: a hunt like kind of around with a rifle was
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: intended for and it's just a really lightweight, packable rifle
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: and so uh kind of threw a pitch out like, hey,
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: this is what this thing is made for, like once
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: you send me on a sheep hunt. And they're like, well,
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: we might be able to make that happen. And it
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: worked within you know however, Yeah, I still can't believe it.
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Still can't I believe it. So that's what we did
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: in the Brooks Range. Yeah, sound slope. Yeah, I got
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: an outfitter that I actually found the hunt in January.
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: He had had a couple of cancelations founded off Craigslist. Yeah, No,
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: that one was word of mouth too. It was yeah, yeah,
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: it was awesome. It's totally coincidental. But I was looking
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: into some hunts in the Brooks Range talking to some people,
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: and the Brooks Range right now is not in good shape.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: But the ship, i should say, the sheep in the
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: Brooks Range are not in good shape. There's a lot
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: of not good shape sheep units in Alaska right now,
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: just some bad string of bad winter. But you're like
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: the sixth person that I've talked to that had an
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: unbelievably good sheep in the Brooks Range. I don't know
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: if I would say it was like unbelievably good. Well,
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: it was basically the opposite of like yours for weather
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: and whatnot. It sucked for most of it, but it
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: was it was fun. Did you see any other rams
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: besides killed? I mean I saw probably six legal rams.
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: Um we saw them all like two days before season,
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: the day before season. Yeah, and then like we found
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: one in the middle that we ended up blowing a
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: stock on, and then the one that end up killing
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: at the end was with another legal ram. So yeah,
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: but we just had a bad string of weather. It
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: was yeah, yeah, for pretty much. The first day was
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: good and we had a ram that we've been watching
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: the previous two days give us the slip and thought,
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: no worries, like we're right where their home is, Like
- 1:56:40Speaker 1: we're gonna just pick through here and find him. And
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: then the next day it was pretty much like zero
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: zero on visibility and raining for I think until like
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: five six o'clock that night, and then the next day
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: it was a whole day in the tent. The day
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: after that was most of the morning and the tent
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: we got to move a little bit and it broke
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: that afternoon. We ended up finding a ram that was
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: super cool, but we just like the way that we
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: had to go in on him. Um, we couldn't see
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: exactly I didn't think anyways, we could see exactly where
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: they were bedded once we got around into the top,
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: and just took a lot of time to do that
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: as just moving in that country as hard as you know. Um,
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: And they ended up going through a saddle underneath of
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: us as we were trying to go through the saddle
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: to them, so we basically passed each other and I
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: think we were like two yards from him, but it
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: was so steep that you just couldn't see. You don't
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: have those hills like have a lot of creases in them,
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: and they ended up busting out. So that was and
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: I told the guy that was like I've blown a
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: lot of stocks. That one was the worst thing hurting
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: one that I've ever had. But yeah, then we spent
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: the next it was like the next three days in
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: the town and it was just the most frustrating thing
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: on the planet. Oh man, Yeah, burned up a lot
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: of in reach battery on that on that deal. So
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: doing that one time sheep hunting and no one brought
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: a book, but my brother bought. I had thought to
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: bring a book, and there's three of us and he
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: cut his book in thirds and since it was his book,
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: he got to read front to back. I had like
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: start in the middle and then get my third later.
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: So you had to read it like portions. You know, man,
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: sit in the tense, painful. It sucked, but it's I mean,
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: I don't know, I think we've done what three dollars
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: she punts together, and I feel like that's been a
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: part of every single one. But every time it makes
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: you mad. Oh yeah, but you got to go in
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: expecting it. You know. I mean that's why you go
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: for ten days, because five of them you probably can't
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: see anything. Yeah, yeah, exactly. And it it got to
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: a point where like even if you wanted to, you know,
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: like the guy told me, he said, I don't know
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: most he said, most of my clients, like we would
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: have left three days ago because it was just like
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: they would have got burned out. Yeah, they would have
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: got burned out. But where are you gonna go, like,
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: you know, walk to the air strip. But it's still
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: they can't come get you. We're just gonna like stare
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: at wherever that is. And uh yeah yeah. So finally
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: it was like it was the eight Now it was
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: the seventh day of the hunt. We woke up to snow,
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: but everything was like clearing off and it was starting
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: to get nicer. And made our way down the spine
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: and we were starting to figure out our exit strategy
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: because that was a that was a Wednesday, and we
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: were getting picked up on a Friday morning from the
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: air strip and we're still a ways away from the
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: air strip, and so we're on this ridge like right
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: up in the rocks with the sheep. Our guide finds
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: four rams across the valley on another mountain, and he's like,
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: I think we can. He's like, I don't know if
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: we can get there and back to the air strip,
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: but that's kind of our only options. So he's like,
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: it's up to you, Like, I think we can get
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: there and get this all done, but at least get
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: close to him, or we can stay up here and
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: keep picking around trying to find sheep. But he's like,
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: either way, we have to be at the aer strip
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: Friday morning, so at eight o'clock, so you like figure out,
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: you know, kind of what you think we should do.
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: And I'm like, I would rather go after those sheep,
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: and all of our eggs were going to be in
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: that basket too, Like it was a little bit lower
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: on the mountain, um they were. They were probably the
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: only sheep in that little that mountain that we could see.
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: So I was like, I'd rather go over there and
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: screw it up and not get one, then sit up
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: here and wish we would have went. So he's like,
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: if it, we're going. And it was like we left
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: there at five o'clock. I had to go through the
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: brush line and then back up through the brush line
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: and all that, and we got we were a thousand
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: yard it's from the sheep at one am and they
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: were still batted where we left the last time I
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: saw him, So that was nice. And uh so we
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: threw out sleeping bags on a really steep hillside and
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: just try not to freeze to death. And it was
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: light enough that we could start like kind of moving
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: and you could really tell which ram was which at
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: like four thirty in the morning this Thursday, this Thursday morning. Yeah,
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: so we watched him for quite a while and it
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: was like, of course, the coldest night that we had
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: was when we just through sleeping bags on the ground
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: and like didn't have any things like when the storm breaks,
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: it's really clear outside. Nice. Yeah, it was cold, super cold,
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: and uh so we watched him for a while. They
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: ended up bedding out on this like rock cliff thing.
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: We weren't going to be able to make the approach
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: we wanted, but it was kind of getting down to
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: crunch time, like we need to move and do something.
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: So we came up with this. We came up with
- 2:01:56Speaker 1: this plan, moved in um and then are we had
- 2:02:02Speaker 1: our packer we left back and he was supposed to
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: be giving us hand signals and we never could see him.
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: But it turns out he could never see the sheep either,
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: so that I guess all worked out. Um, But we
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: moved in and knew what do you think was going
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: through just doing good? Yeah, I don't know, um, but yeah.
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: We just had like pretty a couple of pretty defined
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: like rock outcroppings that we were pretty sure we could
- 2:02:36Speaker 1: get to and be like two yards from the ramps
- 2:02:38Speaker 1: or so. But we could never see him the whole
- 2:02:41Speaker 1: way over. So we're just hoping that they were going
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: to be there, and we like snuck through. And all
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: those rocks are like you know how they are just
- 2:02:49Speaker 1: that they don't have a home. They're like always you know, rolling,
- 2:02:53Speaker 1: making a lot of noise. So we just tried to
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: be as quiet as we could. And I remember it
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: was like this big rock slab that had a crack
- 2:02:59Speaker 1: through the middle of it, and the crack was probably
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: like two ft wide, and the guide poked his head through,
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: and I remember being like he didn't have any he didn't,
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: you know. I expected him to see him really fast,
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: and he didn't move, and I'm like, oh, they're gone,
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: like they backdoored us or whatever, Like they're out of here.
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: And about that time he put his head down and
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: he said, oh, ship a hundred yards and I was like,
- 2:03:26Speaker 1: all right, we're close, and and uh, they were just
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: they were just moving out. And so it was four
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: rams pretty much in a row, uh, in a line,
- 2:03:35Speaker 1: and they were just like moving across the rocks. And
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: it took the guide a little while to figure out
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: like which one there was two legal rams, um, the
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: one that I really liked and the one he thought
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: was the oldest. His lamp tips really flared and that
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: was obviously, you know, that's super cool. So he finally
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: told me what which one he was, and then he
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: was just calling out I remember his calling out ranges.
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: He would just be like one eighty, two hundred to
- 2:04:01Speaker 1: ten to twenty, And I'm thinking, like that little fold
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: that they were in was not really that big. I'm like,
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: if they stay await, like pointed directly away from me
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: the whole time, like I'm gonna I'm not gonna get
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: a shot, Like we're gonna get this close, I'm not
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: going to get a shot at him. In about that time,
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: it's like to twenty I think was the first shot.
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: He just kicked a little bit, quartering away and I
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: put it like right in the last rib and came
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: out his armpit and then he was that was my sheep.
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: Great man, it was super cool. What do you do
- 2:04:34Speaker 1: with that? It's gonna be a full body that we're
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: kicking a dog here, rocky Mount, bighorn sheep fighting a
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: doll sheep, whole body mount. You could just knock it
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: out on the last day like that, have the whole adventure. Yeah,
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: it was awesome. I mean that's really how everybody wants
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: their hunt to like play out. There's just not in hindsight.
- 2:05:09Speaker 1: They hindsight, not everybody. There's plenty of people I think
- 2:05:12Speaker 1: that would say, you know, I'll kill him one day
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: one blow the steam off my cup of coffee. Jordan.
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: If you do, uh, if you do full body, how
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: do you have to carry that animal out? You can't,
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: you can't. I mean what do you do immediately? Just
- 2:05:29Speaker 1: a full body mount? So we just skinned him, like
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: we just took all the hide instead of are they
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: doing like you know, like a half like first shoulder, Um,
- 2:05:37Speaker 1: we took the whole skinned him in the field and
- 2:05:40Speaker 1: then yeah, okay, get it. Yeah, we packed him out
- 2:05:43Speaker 1: and we got back to the airstrip at three am,
- 2:05:46Speaker 1: really Friday morning, catch a little five our nap plane lands. Yeah.
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: It was pretty pretty tight. Yeah, yeah, and then the
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: plane like, of course, the first like really nice day
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: was probably the I shot him, But the next nice
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: day was like, at least the plank could come in.
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: The other option was we were gonna have to walk
- 2:06:06Speaker 1: to the river, which was like, gosh, I don't know,
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: it was probably like another eight miles from where we were,
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: and then I guess hope that the clouds would be
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: high enough there that they could get in. But yeah,
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: it was nice. They got in. The The guy landed
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: at like seven in the morning, and he had brought
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: the packer and the guy had like a bunch more
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: supplies because they had somebody rolling in like a couple
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: of days later, so they were just going to stay
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: up there. And he brought him a half case of beer.
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: And when he took off and took my camera, guy
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: back um me and the guy just like cracked a
- 2:06:42Speaker 1: beer and looked at whatever it was, and I was like,
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: it wasn't that bad, but it was kind of miserable
- 2:06:50Speaker 1: in the moment. We're pretty beat up afterward, your feet
- 2:06:53Speaker 1: and everything. Yeah, like I was, I was pretty good,
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: but that no, I shouldn't say it was pretty good
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: out that it beat the hell out of me. That
- 2:07:03Speaker 1: just those last couple I don't think I lost a
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: bunch of weight, but we weighed my pack when I
- 2:07:08Speaker 1: got back from the pack out and there was like
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: some other guys that I went with, and we all
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: kind of got back at the same time. They were
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: waiting their packs and my camera guys like, you better
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: weigh it, like just to just to see. And I'm like,
- 2:07:19Speaker 1: I bet it was like eighty pounds, like it's it
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: was heavy, but it was like whatever I made it,
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: it was a hundred and two. I was like, yeah, no,
- 2:07:26Speaker 1: wonder in my I couldn't feel my toes for like
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: a week and a half. Pounds. Yeah, I don't ever
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: want to do it against Steve hold the car. Yeah,
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: just carry that much. That's smart. Yeah, that's for everybody.
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: Because I just hung out with my body and Colorado,
- 2:07:46Speaker 1: who did not get to join me at all on
- 2:07:48Speaker 1: my sheep on and one of the big reasons because
- 2:07:50Speaker 1: he's battling bulge disks that are most likely from you know,
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: years of pack and a lot of meat. So kids
- 2:07:59Speaker 1: Jordan just did it. She made it out alive. Man,
- 2:08:01Speaker 1: don't overpack your back and battle that for the rest
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: of your life. Doesn't kill you to go back for
- 2:08:06Speaker 1: a second trip. But so are you? Are you addicted
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: and you're trying to, uh like work any every single
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: angle you can to get back up there for another one. Yeah,
- 2:08:16Speaker 1: I don't know. We'll have to see, like how the
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: doll sheep one goes, but I'm gonna start putting in
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: for Big Horn a little more seriously now. And yeah,
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: I'm not sure where my sheep hunting. We'll we'll go.
- 2:08:30Speaker 1: Now if people want to go check out, how do
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: people go find the video? You know the video guys made,
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: So that is gonna be I think that's gonna be
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: out in January and that will be like a First
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: Light uh six hour kind of combo. Great deal there.
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: So yeah, First Light sent the videographer, which was it
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: was his first mountain trip ever to sending the season.
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: Pros couldn't find any Yeah, you got a book. It
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: was kind of short. It was kind of short notice,
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: but he did fantastic and didn't complain. Probably kept me
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: in better spirits. So so they can find the video
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: through SIG's sour in first light. Yeah, yeah that it
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: probably won't be done until like January, I'm guessing. And then, um,
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: where someone wants to come book book a deer hunt
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: with you. So Running water Hunting dot com is a website.
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: You can kind of get the full run down there,
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: and then just really through my Instagram at Jordan bud.
- 2:09:25Speaker 1: What's the Craiglist ad heading for the uh, I've moved
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: away from Craigslist, totally away from Yeah, I have. I
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: think that's probably the smart smart thing spell all the
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: Instagram because you got like a little underscore or some
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: shipping there, don't you. Oh you have a dot Jordan
- 2:09:44Speaker 1: dot bud. Yeah, people will find you, yeah, they should hopefully.
- 2:09:48Speaker 1: And then and then you guys book Turkey Trips. Book
- 2:09:51Speaker 1: Turkey Trips two is pretty full already. Yeah, pure bread
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: Miriam's so that's native Miriams or yeah yeah, not the
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: hybrids rather hybrid zone so it's cool. Yeah, super white tips.
- 2:10:08Speaker 1: What do you like? What do you like better? The
- 2:10:11Speaker 1: guy in Turkey Hunts are guying deer hunts. Oh, dear
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: hunts for sure. Not a big Turkey person. No, No,
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: that's you don't like squirrels don't like turkeys. I never
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: said it didn't like squirrels. I just haven't don't be
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: into squirrels. I'm gonna come out and hit them squirrels.
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: Do you like have your white tails on the ground
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: more than in a tree? Where? How do you define
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: yourself as a white tail hunter? Uh? Archery wise? Like
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: from trees? Nice? I think, um, we can hunt them
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: on the ground where we're at. It's just we're hunting
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: them a lot like coming from uh betting to like
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: their food source and vice versa, and a lot of
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: that is through open pretty open country like open roly.
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: It's really hard to do, but it's doable to get
- 2:10:58Speaker 1: to get close to them when they're when they're doing that.
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: So like muzzleloader and rifle, Like absolutely, that's the way
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: I'd like to do it. UM, Like we blind hunt
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: for muzzleloader, and we can for rifle. Honestly, we haven't
- 2:11:11Speaker 1: really had two for rifle because we usually feel like
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: on the first day or two, UM, But for muzzloader, like,
- 2:11:18Speaker 1: I really prefer to be on the ground, but we'll
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: put you in a blind if it's applicable, UM, and
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: I think it is. It's like a very very effective way,
- 2:11:25Speaker 1: especially with you know, a lot of our clients are
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: coming from back East. They haven't really stocked anything before,
- 2:11:31Speaker 1: so it's all really like new and that like ambush
- 2:11:35Speaker 1: style of stockings, really fast paced and it's trying to
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: get yeah too much sometimes. So do you have do
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: you do you know about deer that at the end
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: of the year, even though you got all those clients,
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: at the end of year, the deer gives you the
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: slip like you never find it or usually if it's
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: out there, you're gonna find it. Usually if it's out there,
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: we're going to find it. But like that dear that
- 2:11:56Speaker 1: tanyevery shot that you were talking about. A few years ago,
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: I found him. I had one trail camera picture of him,
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: and then after I got the trail camera picture, I
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: went in to try to to glass him and he
- 2:12:09Speaker 1: popped out of a corn field and was walking along it.
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: So I saw him. That was like mid August, and
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: we didn't see that deer again until we killed him December. Second.
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: There's a little mystery out there for you. Yeah, yeah,
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: for sure. They definitely like those big ones, especially like
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: they know how to they know how to slip around,
- 2:12:30Speaker 1: especially like right in the middle of the season. It
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: seems like later season in December, when everything's really coming
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: into the fields and it's like a major food source.
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: It seems like they we get a lot of bucks
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: show up at that time of year and a lot
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: of new deer that I've never seen before, which is kind.
- 2:12:46Speaker 1: But you guys also get some pretty good like still
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: get some rud activity early December, don't you. Yeah, yeah
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: we do. Yeah, that can be a really good time,
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: um for that rud activity. And then like you know,
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: Nebraska's rifle season runs right in the middle of rud
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: of the rut pretty much the third week in November,
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: so yeah, we can. Yeah, we can hunt the the
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: rut a lot. I mean it's pretty much September, September one,
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: December thirty one, you can be hunt deer in Nebraska. Man,
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: I think you're gonna book up. I think You're gonna
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: book up some trips man off the show. I hope.
- 2:13:19Speaker 1: So it's really fun. I'm telling you, Like, the hunt's fun.
- 2:13:23Speaker 1: Like we see a lot of deer usually, um, and
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: you'll like you'll like cook him a burger or something. Yeah,
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: I'll cook you a burger. The crop pod is my friend,
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: what's the Jordan Bunn specialty where you're like, d on
- 2:13:37Speaker 1: Tuesday night, You're gonna like dinner because I'm cooking my
- 2:13:42Speaker 1: uh pulled pork. I would say, yeah, yeah, not bad.
- 2:13:47Speaker 1: She'll throw in a free pulled pork sandwich. Yeah. Bo
- 2:13:51Speaker 1: a trip. Now, I think you're gonna books and trips up.
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: I hope. So, man, when people come out, you help them,
- 2:13:57Speaker 1: you get all their meat package up or to get
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: it all sets so they can bring it home with
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: a processor or whatever. Yeah. So last in the previous
- 2:14:05Speaker 1: years we haven't had a processor around, so we usually
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: just help them like quarter it and get it ready.
- 2:14:11Speaker 1: However they can get at home with them whether that's
- 2:14:14Speaker 1: like mostly it's just like we try to debone it
- 2:14:17Speaker 1: and do like all the things for c w D
- 2:14:19Speaker 1: and whatnot. Um, but we just put it in a
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: cooler and they check it on the plane with them
- 2:14:24Speaker 1: or yeah, we've like got it frozen completely solid before
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: and shipped it. Um do things like they want to
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: do something with their head that you they bring it
- 2:14:33Speaker 1: home or you have like a person you bring it to.
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: So a lot of people have just been like do
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: they like doing the euro Mounts. That's been really popular.
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: So I've got a buddy I went to Freedom the
- 2:14:43Speaker 1: Freedom Mounts. I like that. How they had to rebrand
- 2:14:46Speaker 1: French fries during the Iraq invasion. No, yeah, France wouldn't
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: get on board with the Iraq invasion, so they rebranded
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: French fries is freedom fries? Like call them euromounts. We
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: really taught them. Yeah, oh no, that changed their tune. Yeah.
- 2:15:03Speaker 1: I don't like calling your I don't like calling him
- 2:15:04Speaker 1: your amounts. I like that Freedoms. So if you would
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: like Freedom ount I've got a buddy I went to
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: high school with that's in town, that does a bunch
- 2:15:17Speaker 1: of them and then he'll he'll get them done and
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: ship them to you. So then we don't have to
- 2:15:20Speaker 1: like worry about the brain matter and all that stuff.
- 2:15:22Speaker 1: It can be kind of really easy, like a painless
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: deal for the getting everything back to him great Jordan
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: bud Man, Yeah, that would be honest. She doesn't overbook
- 2:15:32Speaker 1: the place. It's good hunting, get you all scored away,
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: it's fun. Yeah, you're not mean to him, No, not
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: most of the time. She hesitated. If you moved too much,
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: she might be a little mean. I don't know, and
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: and tell tell everybody again where he can go find you.
- 2:15:52Speaker 1: Uh pray. Instagram is the best place at Jordan dot
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: bud on the Instagram and uh, I think that's it.
- 2:16:00Speaker 1: Running water Productions dot com is my media business until
- 2:16:03Speaker 1: the outfitter business again. Running water Hunting dot com. Thanks
