• 1:32
  Speaker 3: common denominator.
• 1:33
Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. So yeah, I think that might be right.
• 1:38
Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if I'm on there or not. It
• 1:40
Speaker 2: just it really matters where the oh and yeah, you
• 1:47
Speaker 2: know the drill. Every week we dive into the wildest,
• 1:50
Speaker 2: weirdest uh and most jaw joppering, dropping hiring fails from offices,
• 1:56
Speaker 2: job sites, organizations all over the country. And don't forget,
• 2:00
Speaker 2: we're running that ten thousand dollars contest. So submit your story.
• 2:04
Speaker 2: You know who knows everyone who hires people has a story,
• 2:09
Speaker 2: so you can send it in shoot your shot chance

Speaker 2: to win ten thousand dollars. All right, So I don't know,
• 2:19
  Speaker 2: I'd like it.
• 2:19
Speaker 3: The easiest way to win ten thousand dollars I've ever
• 2:21
Speaker 3: heard of, so yeah, I might as.
• 2:23
Speaker 2: Well have tried. Yeah right, take take ten minutes to
• 2:25
Speaker 2: shut your story. Do you imagine you're ten minutes you
• 2:28
Speaker 2: drat your story, You put your story down, and the
• 2:30
Speaker 2: next thing you know.
• 2:32
Speaker 3: Gosh, I should probably drop ding story.
• 2:34
  Speaker 2: Two thousand bucks.
• 2:35
Speaker 3: Yeah, me and Emma would love to enter if we could,
• 2:38
  Speaker 3: but we can't.
• 2:38
Speaker 2: So it's the twenty seventh show.
• 2:42
  Speaker 1: It is.
• 2:43
  Speaker 3: It's crazy.
• 2:44
  Speaker 2: Yeah, we've learned a lot.
• 2:46
  Speaker 1: Yeah, we have.
• 2:48
Speaker 2: Just thinking about how we started.
• 2:49
Speaker 3: Change Studios Change Yeah, ARLT change filming rooms in our
• 2:54
Speaker 3: own office, created our own studio. It's been kind of crazy.
• 2:57
Speaker 1: I think our one year anniversary is this why or August?
• 3:01
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 3:01
Speaker 1: I think yep, craziness.
• 3:04
Speaker 2: That's awesome. All right, how about this I'll start it off.
• 3:12
Speaker 2: So I'm an HR director at an inpatient psychiatric and
• 3:17
Speaker 2: substance abuse treatment center. Okay, okay, normal Monday, running new
• 3:23
Speaker 2: hiring orientation, new contractor coming in. He shows up drunk, right,
• 3:32
Speaker 2: not a little not a little off drunk at an
• 3:38
  Speaker 2: addiction treatment facility.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: I get a lot of stories like the yeah, or
• 3:44
Speaker 1: like people show up to a job they're like, yeah,
• 3:46
Speaker 1: I don't like talking on the phone at center.
• 3:49
Speaker 2: This shows up to a treatment center as a contractor.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: It does some work. He shows up drunk. Wow, like
• 3:56
Speaker 2: maybe that you know these treatments center people, they would
• 3:58
Speaker 2: never notice a person, right, So we pull him aside
• 4:03
Speaker 2: and give him a reasonable suspicion alcohol test.
• 4:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, also, as he should.
• 4:08
Speaker 2: He blows high, high enough that she's genuinely concerned. So
• 4:13
Speaker 2: we wait, that required thirty.
• 4:15
  Speaker 1: Even get there?
• 4:16
  Speaker 2: Sorry you drink?
• 4:17
Speaker 1: How did he get there? Drink a lot?
• 4:20
Speaker 2: Oh god? He drive there, no questions, he to ove,
• 4:25
Speaker 2: his mother dropped him off.
• 4:26
Speaker 3: Where he's like, I got drunk in the parking lot. Yeah,
• 4:29
Speaker 3: pregaming work if you will, it.
• 4:31
Speaker 2: Will totally be true. So we wait, that required thirty minutes,
• 4:35
Speaker 2: and we retest him. He blows higher because thirty minute
• 4:42
Speaker 2: window he had been drinking at his orientation while behind supervised,
• 4:48
Speaker 2: while we were standing My gosh.
• 4:51
Speaker 3: Well, also, it takes longer to get into your system,
• 4:54
Speaker 3: so he could have maybe he did drink in the
• 4:56
Speaker 3: parking lot, and then it was just.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: She's saying that he was drinking at his orientation. Okay, well, jeez,
• 5:01
Speaker 2: I guess he was. He had it in the cup
• 5:03
Speaker 2: and was just trying to make it.
• 5:04
Speaker 3: Like like a tumbler. Yeah, like you know, that's what
• 5:07
Speaker 3: the closet alcohols, just some coffee.
• 5:12
Speaker 2: We had him gone before lunch. The job posting never
• 5:16
Speaker 2: said must be sober, but I really thought that was implied.
• 5:21
Speaker 3: You would think you was thinking people would have the
• 5:25
Speaker 3: common sense to not also just show up to work drunk.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: In general, I wonder how many people in the HR
• 5:33
Speaker 2: space have have had somebody show up drunk to an interview.
• 5:39
  Speaker 2: I bet it is a crazy I mean we've told.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: A lot of stories like that.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, I guarantee it has been a time when they
• 5:47
Speaker 2: sat down, you're like the whiff of that weed. Yeah?
• 5:53
Speaker 1: Are you high right now? Yeah?
• 5:55
  Speaker 2: Him?
• 5:56
Speaker 3: Were you high on your first Oh that's a weird
• 5:58
Speaker 3: question first, and to ask no, no, just checking okay.
• 6:03
Speaker 2: So like the thing to do before we dive back
• 6:06
Speaker 2: into the chaos on the bad hire. This episode is
• 6:09

Speaker 2: Protect your team, protect your reputation, protect your sanity. Go
• 6:42
Speaker 2: to bchecks dot io. That's BC h ex dot io.
• 6:49
Speaker 3: Well, before we move on to my tongs farre as
• 6:51
Speaker 3: we should watch our video that we have from sent
• 6:53
Speaker 3: in by Tom Oh Tom.
• 6:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, what you got, Marcus. Let it roll.
• 7:02
Speaker 5: Let's say we have a negive Nelly's and we are saying,
• 7:05
Speaker 5: let's try to fix them, let's turn them around, because
• 7:07
Speaker 5: obviously we'd like to see it we hired them. There's
• 7:09
Speaker 5: a little bit of confirmation bias. We want to believe
• 7:12
Speaker 5: that this person's right because we hired them. So I
• 7:14
Speaker 5: want to introduce you to a guy named Han. Hahn
• 7:16
Speaker 5: is in your sales department. Han always hits his metrics,
• 7:20
Speaker 5: He adds more clients, high profit margin, top sales person.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: So far, I'm kind of like, sign me up for
• 7:28
Speaker 5: more Hans. I'm in. I'm liking the idea of Han.
• 7:30
Speaker 5: But then you also find out that Han spreads gossip,
• 7:34
Speaker 5: Hans steals clients from your other salespeoples. Han has a
• 7:37
Speaker 5: negative attitude. Han won't work with anyone else. So we've
• 7:40
Speaker 5: isolated him to a virtual office and he doesn't come
• 7:44
Speaker 5: to any meetings. What are we gonna do with that Han,
• 7:46
Speaker 5: Because that's one type of a negive Nelly the super
• 7:49
Speaker 5: high performer, but when it comes to contribution, they're very negative.
• 7:54
Speaker 5: Their competency is really high, but their contribution.
• 7:57
  Speaker 2: Is super low.
• 7:58
Speaker 5: But then you have the reverse. You have the person
• 8:00
Speaker 5: who loves the company, can recite every core value, will
• 8:05
Speaker 5: high five you on the way in at every company
• 8:09
Speaker 5: off site retreat, they're the first one there. But they're
• 8:12
Speaker 5: always laid on their work. They submit work that needs
• 8:14
Speaker 5: to be redone by someone else. They're spelling errors in
• 8:17
Speaker 5: the news letter. So their contribution is really high, but
• 8:20
Speaker 5: their competency is really low. So we meet the second
• 8:23
Speaker 5: type of negative valley. And then the third type is
• 8:26
Speaker 5: contribution's low. Competency is low. The duds and dead beats, Yeah,
• 8:31
  Speaker 5: just like.
• 8:31
Speaker 3: Goodbye, that's super spot on I spent.
• 8:37
Speaker 1: I love the way he told that.
• 8:38
Speaker 2: Yeah he's really good. Yeah, he's a great storyteller.
• 8:43
Speaker 3: To have him come actually live on the show, that's
• 8:46
Speaker 3: really good. He had a lot of energy's right though,
• 8:49
Speaker 3: Yeah he is. There's definitely those two types of people
• 8:51
  Speaker 3: in Oh.
• 8:52
Speaker 2: I always say that that first type he talked about,
• 8:54
Speaker 2: the high performer, you know, but culturally crushing people. I've
• 9:01
Speaker 2: always say that's like the real test of your commitment
• 9:05
  Speaker 2: to culture.
• 9:07
Speaker 4: And that even though he's high yeah performing, actually you know,
• 9:17
Speaker 4: he's actually depressing performance you know, in his proximity, and
• 9:22
Speaker 4: you know that you heard him say, we tried.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: To move him to a virtual office'st away from people.
• 9:27
Speaker 3: It's like you're in time out, but please keep selling,
• 9:29
  Speaker 3: like please.
• 9:32
Speaker 2: It's exactly But that's the kind of Yeah, it's the
• 9:34
Speaker 2: kind of bad higher that that really tests, you know.
• 9:38
Speaker 2: It is a real gut check when you're like, hey,
• 9:40
Speaker 2: I got to let you go. I know you're my
• 9:41
Speaker 2: top performer, yeah, but you're really bad for everybody else. Yeah,
• 9:45
  Speaker 2: you know, so I don't know. That is a a
• 9:51
Speaker 2: real test. That was That was good. I love love that.
• 9:54
  Speaker 1: Thank you Tom.
• 9:57
Speaker 3: All right, so my story today is a a candidate
• 10:00
Speaker 3: that came in for a mid level role. They sit down,
• 10:03
Speaker 3: shake hands, seem totally fine. Then his mother walks in
• 10:07
Speaker 3: a your hiring manager, caught off guard, lets her stay.
• 10:10
Speaker 3: Mom takes a seat in the corner. The interview goes on.
• 10:13
Speaker 3: She's quite the whole time professional. Even the interview wraps up,
• 10:16
Speaker 3: everyone's actually pretty impressed. Then the mom speaks. She looks
• 10:21
Speaker 3: at the hiring team and says, I need you to
• 10:22
Speaker 3: really hear this. She says, please hire my son so
• 10:25
Speaker 3: he can help me pay for my new teeth. Not
• 10:30
Speaker 3: he's worked really hard. Not I'm just here from Morle Support.
• 10:34
Speaker 3: It's straight to the dental work. And the hiring manager
• 10:38
Speaker 3: said it was the clearest sign she'd ever received that
• 10:40
Speaker 3: a candidate might not be ready to manage his own
• 10:43
Speaker 3: professional life. So he didn't get the job, and the
• 10:47
Speaker 3: teeth situation remains unresolved.
• 10:53
Speaker 1: Okay, keep a straight face. The whole time you were
• 10:54
  Speaker 1: telling me.
• 10:55
Speaker 2: I just remember putting the story.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: I was like, you better give me some new teeth.
• 11:00
Speaker 3: So I'm going to make sure you go to your interview,
• 11:01
Speaker 3: and I'm going to make sure you do a good
• 11:03
Speaker 3: job because I need Oh my gosh, my dad would
• 11:06
Speaker 3: find this one really funny. He's a dentist. I'm sure
• 11:08
Speaker 3: that would give him a good lass. But we have
• 11:12
Speaker 3: another story to react to by Tom. This is his
• 11:15
Speaker 3: second story. Oh cool, and so let's go ahead and
• 11:19
Speaker 3: queue that up as well.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: Tom is a rock story.
• 11:22
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm like, he's giving us a whole show today.
• 11:24
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 11:25
  Speaker 3: Tom.
• 11:26
Speaker 5: There was a general vibe of negativity in the organization,
• 11:29
Speaker 5: and so they brought me in and they said, hey,
• 11:31
Speaker 5: can you just sit in for the day on several
• 11:33
Speaker 5: meetings and just take notes and then we'll reconnect afterwards.
• 11:36
Speaker 5: So I did, and I sat there and I took
• 11:37
Speaker 5: all the notes I listed, I took some quotes down,
• 11:39
Speaker 5: and I saw really quickly what the issue was like,
• 11:43
Speaker 5: almost within the first two meetings. So at the end
• 11:45
Speaker 5: of the day, I'm sitting with the executive team and
• 11:47
Speaker 5: they're like, so, what'd you see, Tom?
• 11:48
  Speaker 3: Like?
• 11:49
Speaker 5: Would you hear? And I started reading some on the quotes.
• 11:51
Speaker 5: Am I the only one who thinks around here, this
• 11:53
Speaker 5: is ridiculous? Do we hire the wrong people? Why can
• 11:56
Speaker 5: we not get this done on time? And everyone in
• 11:58
Speaker 5: the room starts looking at one person because those quotes
• 12:02
Speaker 5: were all from the exact same person. Now here's the thing.
• 12:05
Speaker 5: In the world of dance floor theory. We give them
• 12:08
Speaker 5: levels of engagement. So now that we're on the dance floor,
• 12:11
Speaker 5: we give them levels from neutral, one, two, three, four.
• 12:13
  Speaker 2: And five.
• 12:14
  Speaker 5: Executives many times think they're automatically a five, they're a
• 12:18
Speaker 5: level five leader because I have the seed Suite title.
• 12:21
Speaker 5: But the reality is some of your worst negative nellies
• 12:24
Speaker 5: are gonna be your executives. And why that matters is
• 12:28
Speaker 5: because if an in turn walks into a room or
• 12:31
Speaker 5: a meeting and is a negative Nelly, it will have
• 12:33
Speaker 5: a little bit of an impact. But if you, as
• 12:35
Speaker 5: the CEO, walk in and you're saying these quotes, you
• 12:39
Speaker 5: better believe it's going to influence everyone else in that room.
• 12:42
Speaker 5: And so that's why I say seed Suite people, you
• 12:44
Speaker 5: may be complaining about your culture, but I say you
• 12:47
Speaker 5: need to check in with yourself first, because you may
• 12:50
Speaker 5: be the negtive Nelly on your team.
• 12:52
Speaker 3: OK, and do we really want to react to this.
• 12:55
  Speaker 2: I'm just kidding.
• 12:56
Speaker 3: I'm jokey because you're an executive. Oh my god, I
• 13:00
  Speaker 3: mean I do, like, I know, I'm just joking. I
• 13:03
Speaker 3: do agree though. I feel like you do see some
• 13:06
Speaker 3: people who like in these companies that are the executives
• 13:09
Speaker 3: and they're like negative and then they're like, why is
• 13:11
Speaker 3: our culture so crappy? And then it's like, you know,
• 13:14
Speaker 3: it starts from the top, so not here at be
• 13:16
  Speaker 3: checks obviously, but.
• 13:19
  Speaker 2: I don't know. I've worked for a guy for a
• 13:20
Speaker 2: long time, worked for a couple of years for a
• 13:22
Speaker 2: long time. That ed. The only difference is they never asked,
• 13:26
Speaker 2: why is our culture so negative?
• 13:29
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 13:29
Speaker 2: They didn't even know they Yeah, they culture was not
• 13:32
Speaker 2: even something that came through their mind. Yeah. So, you know,
• 13:36
Speaker 2: and sometimes I think it's you know, people just don't
• 13:41
Speaker 2: have the skills. Yeah, you know, the idea that there's
• 13:44
Speaker 2: some type of dictator gets in their head, you know,
• 13:47
Speaker 2: at the executive level. And then and then you know,
• 13:50
Speaker 2: they don't even care. The culture is not even something
• 13:53
Speaker 2: they think about. You know, it's just get the job done,
• 13:57
Speaker 2: obey the rules, you know kind of thing. That's the
• 13:59
Speaker 2: culture her So yeah, yeah, but he I loved what
• 14:04
Speaker 2: he said in there, and that was you know, in
• 14:07
Speaker 2: turn that's negative has little influence on others. Yeah, you know,
• 14:12
Speaker 2: and the higher the person is in the organization. So
• 14:17
Speaker 2: spot on Tom is awesome.
• 14:20
Speaker 3: Yes, we love Tom.
• 14:22
  Speaker 1: Thank you Tom.
• 14:22
Speaker 2: I want to hire Tom.
• 14:24
  Speaker 3: Yeah for real.
• 14:26
Speaker 2: Okay, I'm just kidding.
• 14:26
Speaker 3: He's probably the CEO of something. I need to look
• 14:28
Speaker 3: at his profile after this.
• 14:30
Speaker 1: But thank you Tom.
• 14:31
Speaker 2: It was really good. Yeah. Now, what's up me?
• 14:36
Speaker 1: My turn? Okay, okay, I just have one story, but
• 14:41
Speaker 1: here we go. Okay, So I ran a small company
• 14:44
Speaker 1: and I needed a bookkeeper. I found someone who seems solid,
• 14:48
Speaker 1: good with numbers, easy to work with. I trusted him
• 14:50
Speaker 1: pretty quickly. Honestly, every week payroll ran, everyone got their check,
• 14:55
Speaker 1: and things just kept moving along like normal for a year.
• 14:59
Speaker 1: It wasn't until someone flagged a small discrepancy during an
• 15:01
Speaker 1: audit that anything came up. Turns out my bookkeeper had
• 15:05
Speaker 1: been cutting himself two checks every single week, one legitimate
• 15:08
Speaker 1: paycheck and one that was very much not legitimate for
• 15:11
Speaker 1: twelve months. Nobody caught it because he was the bookkeeper. Yeah,
• 15:15
Speaker 1: he's the one who I would never know. Uh. He
• 15:19
Speaker 1: he reconciled the accounts, he knew exactly where to hide
• 15:22
Speaker 1: it and just had no and I just had no
• 15:24
Speaker 1: reason to look. I brought it in a forensic accountant
• 15:27
Speaker 1: who confirmed it. He had been paying himself double for
• 15:29
Speaker 1: an entire year, and when we confronted him confronted him
• 15:33
Speaker 1: about it, he seemed surprised, not that he'd been caught,
• 15:37
Speaker 1: but that it had taken this long. That the cat
• 15:40
  Speaker 1: doesn't do it.
• 15:41
Speaker 2: He's like you idiots, like he finally caught on.
• 15:46
Speaker 3: A background check with employment away with this is dying
• 15:50
  Speaker 3: to get caught.
• 15:52
Speaker 1: And then it says a background check with employment varication
• 15:55
Speaker 1: might have revealed that his previous employer had let him
• 15:58
Speaker 1: go under very similar circums. Oh lord, and spoiler alert,
• 16:01
  Speaker 1: they did.
• 16:04

• 16:23
Speaker 2: yeah about people hiring bookkeepers and really not doing a
• 16:30
Speaker 2: super thorough job. You know, like maybe they do some
• 16:33
Speaker 2: some background checks, but a lot of these things where
• 16:37
Speaker 2: people get caught, you know, they don't get they don't
• 16:40
Speaker 2: get turned over to the police, there's not a lot
• 16:42
Speaker 2: of charges. They end up getting booted and fired.

Speaker 3: And I still feel like you should have somebody who
• 16:47
Speaker 3: regularly audits your bookkeeper just to like be safe. Oh yeah, sure, yeah,
• 16:53
Speaker 3: because like giving somebody that i'mount of trust is a
