- 0:01Speaker 1: It's time to talk to Utah quarterback Devin Dampier. This
- 0:05Speaker 1: is Dishing with Devin on the Sean O'Connell Show. Brought
- 0:08Speaker 1: to you by Colligan Water, Salt Lake City, America First
- 0:11Speaker 1: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Now here's
- 0:15Speaker 1: OC with Ute Star signal caller Devin Dampier on your
- 0:19Speaker 1: home of the Utes and your home for football.
- 0:21Speaker 2: ESPN 792.1 FM. Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Welcome in QB. Number one at the university of Utah,
- 0:31Speaker 2: Devin damn peer signal caller leader for a five and
- 0:35Speaker 2: O Utah football team. Dev. Welcome to the show. Once again,
- 0:39Speaker 2: how are you?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Man doing good. Doing good.
- 0:43Speaker 2: How does it feel to be five and O.
- 0:46Speaker 4: You know, I would say it feels just about right.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Honestly. confidence I got in my team. You know, this
- 0:54Speaker 3: is a position where.
- 0:56Speaker 4: We've talked about being at and, you know, we're just going.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Week by week and, you know, we're doing what we
- 1:03Speaker 3: said we would do.
- 1:04Speaker 2: We'll look back at Kansas a little bit, look forward
- 1:07Speaker 2: to Colorado here in just a second. But did the,
- 1:10Speaker 2: did the Jayhawks surprise you at all?
- 1:14Speaker 4: Speaker 4 0 No, I thought the Jayhawks were.
- 1:16Speaker 3: A pretty good team when we went in there.
- 1:18Speaker 4: I mean, they competed pretty well with even their two
- 1:21Speaker 4: losses before us, you know, they, they competed pretty well.
- 1:24Speaker 3: With them also.
- 1:25Speaker 4: So, you know, I knew it was going to be
- 1:29Speaker 4: a game and I'm just happy how, you know, ended
- 1:32Speaker 4: up turning out.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Speaker 1 0 You finished the game 23 of 30,
- 1:35Speaker 2: 238 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. I wanted to
- 1:41Speaker 2: talk to you about the efficiency of this offense, especially
- 1:45Speaker 2: in first possessions of the game. I'm sure you're aware
- 1:47Speaker 2: of this. You all have scored a touchdown on all
- 1:51Speaker 2: five of your opening possessions as a team. We've only trailed,
- 1:54Speaker 2: I think for four and a half minutes. And that's
- 1:57Speaker 2: because somebody else got the ball first. when we're talking
- 2:02Speaker 2: about that, a hot start and starting off the right
- 2:04Speaker 2: way with a scoring drive and a, and a touchdown
- 2:07Speaker 2: scoring drive, not just a field goal. What kind of
- 2:09Speaker 2: tone does that set for all of you in knowing
- 2:12Speaker 2: that your preparation was, was done the right way and
- 2:15Speaker 2: knowing that the game's going to go fine.
- 2:24Speaker 4: .
- 2:26Speaker 3: .
- 2:27Speaker 4: Normally, when defense goes out there first, they
- 2:29Speaker 4: normally get us a good position where maybe.
- 2:31Speaker 3: We're starting at the 35.
- 2:32Speaker 4: They shorten the distance for us to have to march
- 2:36Speaker 4: down there. Just as offense, we take it a little
- 2:39Speaker 4: bit personal when a team feels good about giving us
- 2:41Speaker 4: the ball first. A lot of teams do that, so
- 2:44Speaker 4: their defense gets out there and gets a stop. We
- 2:47Speaker 4: definitely take it personal. I bet if you want our
- 2:50Speaker 4: offense out there first, we're going to make you pay
- 2:52Speaker 4: for it. That's just the mentality.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I like that. That's the mentality because that's not why
- 2:58Speaker 2: they're doing it. They're doing it so they can get
- 3:00Speaker 2: the first possession of the second half, but you guys
- 3:03Speaker 2: turn it into motivation.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt.
- 3:07Speaker 2: All right. So tell me what you saw from Ricky Johnson.
- 3:12Speaker 2: He went in practice and in the game this week
- 3:15Speaker 2: to where you felt like maybe this was going to
- 3:16Speaker 2: be his breakout day. And it was five catches, 104
- 3:19Speaker 2: yards and a touchdown.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, Ricky's been proving himself for a long
- 3:25Speaker 4: time now. I'm pretty sure there's an interview of me
- 3:27Speaker 4: saying Ricky was someone that I thought was impressive in
- 3:32Speaker 4: the spring and fall, and so did Scali.
- 3:35Speaker 3: He brought him up in the fall.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Also, just some players that were going to end up
- 3:39Speaker 4: emerging at some point this year.
- 3:41Speaker 3: I'm just happy to see, you know, Rick.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Rick's been working to have those opportunities, and, I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 4: he made the most of every single ball that came
- 3:49Speaker 4: his way. The only one he didn't catch is him–
- 3:53Speaker 4: going for getting the PI call. So just when the
- 3:55Speaker 4: ball goes his way, you know, he's, he's doing a
- 3:57Speaker 4: pretty good job with making the most out of his opportunities.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And they were like, oh,
- 4:15Speaker 2: we just talked to Ricky Johnson. And Morgan was like,
- 4:17Speaker 2: did he say anything? Cause he's a quiet kid. So,
- 4:21Speaker 2: so Rick, he didn't seem like he was a quiet
- 4:23Speaker 2: kid when they were doing the interview with them. But
- 4:25Speaker 2: then Morgan was like, yeah, he never says anything.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. So Ricky, Ricky's like the ultimate, like dude,
- 4:35Speaker 4: you can't get the talk unless like he feels all
- 4:37Speaker 4: of them be comfortable. I've never heard Ricky talk before
- 4:41Speaker 4: we went to our Arizona trip. I've probably heard Ricky
- 4:45Speaker 4: say 10 words the whole entire spring. And then that
- 4:48Speaker 4: summer when we kind of forced him to be with
- 4:52Speaker 4: all of us for.
- 4:54Speaker 3: seven days straight.
- 4:55Speaker 4: And, you know, by, by day two, like Ricky was
- 4:57Speaker 4: starting conversations.
- 4:58Speaker 3: It was, it was funny to see like him open up.
- 5:01Speaker 4: So, um, I think I've built that comfortable in this
- 5:04Speaker 4: land where, you know, he, he talks to me, we've been.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Playing Fortnite now. I'd be getting on the game with him,
- 5:08Speaker 3: but yeah, Ricky, Ricky's a, he's a character, bro. I
- 5:11Speaker 3: love him.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Got a lot of talent in that wide receiver room.
- 5:15Speaker 2: As we have talked about a lot, Ricky with five
- 5:18Speaker 2: catches BP with seven for 72 Creed Whittemore got involved.
- 5:22Speaker 2: You got the ball to Noah, Benny Daniel Bray, but
- 5:25Speaker 2: the one that really got the fan base going was
- 5:28Speaker 2: a one yard pass to semi semi tell long a
- 5:33Speaker 2: on that, that option play, you pull the ball and
- 5:36Speaker 2: you throw the touchdown pass. And it was like, I mean,
- 5:39Speaker 2: that was a crucial, crucial moment in the game, Kansas
- 5:43Speaker 2: to their credit had made it a game and you
- 5:46Speaker 2: guys needed to score there and you needed to convert
- 5:49Speaker 2: on fourth down. And the play call gives you the
- 5:52Speaker 2: option to throw it a big number 99. Tell me
- 5:55Speaker 2: what you saw. Tell me about the read. And of
- 5:57Speaker 2: course the result. Yeah.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Man, there was a point where I handed off Simi
- 6:04Speaker 4: a run play and he went for.
- 6:06Speaker 3: A yard and the crowd got real loud.
- 6:08Speaker 4: So when we got to that fourth down and I
- 6:11Speaker 4: knew Simi had a chance of getting the ball, I
- 6:13Speaker 4: kind of already knew.
- 6:14Speaker 3: I'd seen him already scoring in my head.
- 6:17Speaker 4: The crowd loved to see Simi score a touchdown.
- 6:20Speaker 3: But McG, he talked to us after, he was like,
- 6:25Speaker 3: You know, four down, me calling that. He said it
- 6:29Speaker 3: with confidence to the coaches, like, yeah, let's run that.
- 6:31Speaker 4: And then after he put the mic down, he was like,
- 6:33Speaker 4: all right.
- 6:36Speaker 3: So he told us after the game, it was hilarious.
- 6:38Speaker 3: We all laughed, and then the offense.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Would beat him.
- 6:41Speaker 3: But, yeah, no, perfect call, honestly.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Being so close in there, you know, they, they sleep
- 6:47Speaker 4: on those guys being able to catch a ball.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So it all worked out.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And, and look, you were able to, you were able
- 6:52Speaker 2: to freeze the defense with the play action and the
- 6:56Speaker 2: fake to weigh Sean. You, you have the option to
- 6:59Speaker 2: give that ball there, right?
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yep. Yep.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I had the option to give it in.
- 7:05Speaker 4: I mean, wait, wait, Wade's been playing tremendous.
- 7:09Speaker 3: It's so stuffed on.
- 7:11Speaker 4: You know, there's a lot of stuff, a lot of
- 7:14Speaker 4: good plays where the whole line makes holes for him,
- 7:16Speaker 4: and there's also plays where way of getting touched minus
- 7:20Speaker 4: one and somehow turn it into an AR game.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And I'm like, I've been telling him, just keep that up, bro. We,
- 7:25Speaker 3: we need it. We're feeding off of it.
- 7:27Speaker 4: So, and that's, that's exactly how I'm sending you that open.
- 7:30Speaker 4: I mean, way of playing his heart out. Those guys
- 7:32Speaker 4: respect him running the ball. And he just opened up
- 7:35Speaker 4: the office for other people as well.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, if you had given it, he would've
- 7:38Speaker 2: got in the bill Riley.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Bill Riley on the radio call actually thought you had
- 7:43Speaker 2: given it. He called it a touchdown for a way
- 7:45Speaker 2: shot and had to go back and the backtrack and
- 7:47Speaker 2: correct himself. And everyone was happy to see semi, but
- 7:50Speaker 2: as long as we're talking about way, Sean, There's a,
- 7:53Speaker 2: there's a scenario in this game where your defense gets
- 7:56Speaker 2: a much needed stop and it's still close. And the
- 7:59Speaker 2: outcome is at least in, on some level, still up
- 8:02Speaker 2: in doubt. And now you are all you're backed up
- 8:04Speaker 2: against your own end zone. You're, you know, you're standing
- 8:07Speaker 2: in the North end zone when you're taking these snaps
- 8:09Speaker 2: or when you're dropping back, what are your thoughts and
- 8:12Speaker 2: what is the conversation like with your teammates when you're
- 8:15Speaker 2: backed up and you got to go 99 yards to
- 8:18Speaker 2: get the score. Of course, it only took a few plays.
- 8:20Speaker 2: We'll get to that here in a second. But when
- 8:22Speaker 2: you're going out there and your defense just got you
- 8:24Speaker 2: that stop and stole some of the momentum back, what
- 8:26Speaker 2: were you thinking?
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:30Speaker 4: You know, I just brought together the offense and, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 4: this is our time to shine. This is when, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 4: this is when pressure hits us as offense.
- 8:40Speaker 3: And, you know, what are we going to do about it?
- 8:43Speaker 4: We've been in this situation before, you know, Coach Cowley,
- 8:46Speaker 4: puts us in a lot of situational drill throughout the year. And,
- 8:50Speaker 4: you know, we've done backed up period so many times and,
- 8:54Speaker 4: you know, we're able to get out of those on
- 8:56Speaker 4: our defense.
- 8:56Speaker 3: So just the confidence we've.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Built, we're just like, Hey, this is, this is another,
- 9:01Speaker 4: another time to be the most efficient we can.
- 9:04Speaker 3: And I thought, you know, we did pretty well getting
- 9:06Speaker 3: out of there.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Speaker 2, you got, you got the pass to the
- 9:08Speaker 2: BP for, you know, kind of get you out of
- 9:10Speaker 2: the shadow of the end zone, right. To give you
- 9:12Speaker 2: a little bit of breathing room. And then way Sean
- 9:15Speaker 2: Parker takes it 90 yards, which it was good to
- 9:18Speaker 2: see him get that one back because a couple of
- 9:20Speaker 2: weeks ago he had one that was called back on
- 9:23Speaker 2: a penalty. So big long run from that wildcat formation
- 9:26Speaker 2: for way Sean Parker. I don't, were you on the field?
- 9:30Speaker 2: Were you, were you out at like motioned out as
- 9:32Speaker 2: a wide receiver or were you on the sideline?
- 9:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yep.
- 9:36Speaker 3: I was all that receiver at that point.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Okay. No, when you're standing out there as a wide
- 9:41Speaker 2: receiver and you watch that go, tell me how it is.
- 9:46Speaker 4: In my head, I'm just always like, well, he's going
- 9:48Speaker 4: to get it. So I'm just like, I'm just like that.
- 9:51Speaker 4: But then I low-key seen him like, I can tell
- 9:54Speaker 4: when Way like sees a crease.
- 9:56Speaker 3: There's like a, he's got like a movement. I've just,
- 9:59Speaker 3: I've been able to. like tell where you can see
- 10:01Speaker 3: a crease and he stuck it and just hit it.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And I was like, Oh, he might be gone. And
- 10:07Speaker 3: sure enough, that boy was gone.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I'll tell you it's there's no guarantee
- 10:11Speaker 2: in today's like era of college football that even when
- 10:15Speaker 2: you get to that second level, no contact when you
- 10:18Speaker 2: got 90 yards to go, some of these DBS are
- 10:20Speaker 2: really fast. And way. Sean's not like a long strider.
- 10:24Speaker 2: He's not a guy that we think of as like
- 10:26Speaker 2: the biggest breakout speed, but you know, he, he took
- 10:30Speaker 2: all the bad weight off himself in the off season.
- 10:32Speaker 2: No one was going to catch him. And again, that's
- 10:34Speaker 2: not like a foregone conclusion in college football because how
- 10:37Speaker 2: fast some of these corners are, nobody was touching him.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Speaker 4 05, 06, 07, 08. Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 4: I mean the fact way, probably way 25, 30 pounds
- 10:46Speaker 4: more than the corners and running at the same speed
- 10:49Speaker 4: or even faster.
- 10:50Speaker 3: I think he had 23 miles an hour.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Sorry. That's where they caught them at 23.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:57Speaker 3: He was five and like.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Like two 10 or whatever he is. That's a, that's
- 11:01Speaker 2: the kind of stuff. That's the tape that NFL coaches
- 11:03Speaker 2: and NFL scouts are going to be like, yeah, let
- 11:05Speaker 2: me get that guy.
- 11:07Speaker 4: What's funny is that was the first time he hit
- 11:09Speaker 4: that high of a number. So now Scali's like, all right,
- 11:12Speaker 4: so now we know what your 90% is every week
- 11:13Speaker 4: when you got to hit the top three.
- 11:15Speaker 3: So that has gone up.
- 11:18Speaker 2: That's amazing. He just hurt himself in practice by going
- 11:22Speaker 2: too fast. Oh, Devin Depp here is our guest here
- 11:26Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell show brought to you by Culligan
- 11:28Speaker 2: Water of Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union and
- 11:31Speaker 2: Valley Plumbing, Heating and and cooling, dishing with Dev every
- 11:36Speaker 2: single week right here on your home of the Utes.
- 11:39Speaker 2: All right. You know, I got to do this to you.
- 11:40Speaker 2: A couple of turnovers in this game. Tell me what
- 11:44Speaker 2: happened on both of those plays.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I think I can have the first one.
- 11:49Speaker 4: I just think I can have better pocket movement out there.
- 11:52Speaker 4: You know, I, I thrive on my pocket movement and
- 11:54Speaker 4: being able to help our O-line when, you know, the
- 11:57Speaker 4: things don't go right for them.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I'm always back there being able to recover.
- 12:01Speaker 4: So just pocket movement definitely could.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Have helped the first turnover.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean, just the second turnover, me and
- 12:09Speaker 4: BP were just on different terms.
- 12:11Speaker 3: He thought I was throwing them farther than I was.
- 12:14Speaker 3: And yeah, it just, it happens.
- 12:16Speaker 4: You, you get to game five, you know, I think
- 12:19Speaker 4: that was the first interception where, you know, I kind
- 12:21Speaker 4: of threw one just a.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Not being pressured or anything. So, I mean, it, it, it.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Comes with the game, but you know, I think the
- 12:31Speaker 4: biggest part that I took away from that is just
- 12:33Speaker 4: how we responded, honestly, you know, gate, everything's not going
- 12:37Speaker 4: to be perfect, but the way you respond definitely matters
- 12:40Speaker 4: to me and my team.
- 12:41Speaker 3: And you know, I think we take full advantage of that.
- 12:47Speaker 2: we've talked a little bit about
- 12:48Speaker 2: your process of, of making sure you put the bad
- 12:51Speaker 2: stuff out of your mind. And there are going to
- 12:53Speaker 2: be broken plays like that. There are going to be
- 12:55Speaker 2: errant throws. There are going to be fumbles from you
- 12:58Speaker 2: or whoever else, like you have to overcome those things.
- 13:01Speaker 2: in football. There is no such thing as perfection in
- 13:03Speaker 2: this game. In that particular case, right? Do you go
- 13:07Speaker 2: and you talk to, to BP and say, Hey, that's
- 13:10Speaker 2: not what I was doing. We got the wrong read
- 13:11Speaker 2: on each other. Do you go and take that moment
- 13:14Speaker 2: you've described by yourself and just like flush it in
- 13:17Speaker 2: the actual game against Kansas? How did you move on
- 13:20Speaker 2: from that? That's wrong.
- 13:28Speaker 4: .
- 13:30Speaker 3: it's me putting the
- 13:32Speaker 3: ball out there. It's me making those decisions.
- 13:34Speaker 4: So, but I just want to make sure if the
- 13:37Speaker 4: situation ever comes back again, you know, we're on the
- 13:39Speaker 4: same page we're clicking, but I don't really stress too much. I,
- 13:43Speaker 4: I get, I do get a little quieter than I
- 13:46Speaker 4: want to be at times when, when things go bad,
- 13:48Speaker 4: just cause I need to breathe. I need to just
- 13:51Speaker 4: reset my, my system. That's, that's how I've always got
- 13:54Speaker 4: through things is just breathe, calm down, get my heart
- 13:58Speaker 4: rate back down low and, So that's a little bit
- 14:02Speaker 4: of how I get, but still learning how to be
- 14:06Speaker 4: a leader at the same time, still encouraging my team,
- 14:08Speaker 4: let them know, you know, I'm not quiet because I'm
- 14:11Speaker 4: down on myself. I'm, I'm quiet because I'm, I'm calming
- 14:14Speaker 4: myself down. Cause you know, there's no need to panic mode.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Speaker 1 0 to me when I'm watching, uh, the, the,
- 14:25Speaker 2: the running version of Devin Dampier this year looks healthier.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Looks like, you know, your body moves twitchier than it
- 14:33Speaker 2: did last year for obvious reasons, because you were, you
- 14:35Speaker 2: were at this point in the season, if I'm not mistaken,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you already dealing with some stuff last year when you
- 14:41Speaker 2: watch yourself running or when you're evaluating your tape, 17
- 14:45Speaker 2: carries 71 yards and a touchdown in this game. Uh,
- 14:49Speaker 2: How are you evaluating yourself? What do you want to
- 14:52Speaker 2: see more of? What are you satisfied with, et cetera,
- 14:55Speaker 2: when it comes to you running the ball, carrying the football?
- 14:59Speaker 4: Yeah. I think, you know, the mindset of the way
- 15:03Speaker 4: Maggie just calls offense and things.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Like that is.
- 15:07Speaker 4: Anytime I'm running the ball, there's, there's always an option
- 15:10Speaker 4: to pass the ball. So, you know, I'm always trying
- 15:13Speaker 4: to just take whatever, whatever is the best opportunity, honestly,
- 15:18Speaker 4: that whatever is going to move the chain, what I
- 15:20Speaker 4: feel confident in, you know, that's the decision I make.
- 15:23Speaker 4: So the run game isn't as heavy as it was
- 15:28Speaker 4: last year on me. It's, it's kind of up to
- 15:30Speaker 4: me if I choose to end up running in those
- 15:32Speaker 4: gaps or not, but yeah, Obviously, I've been pretty fine
- 15:36Speaker 4: with the amount of hits I feel like I've been taking.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I feel like I've been taking.
- 15:41Speaker 4: The safer route on getting hit this year just to
- 15:44Speaker 4: prevent the injury of sides of things because that can
- 15:48Speaker 4: change a lot of experience from last year. Playing and
- 15:53Speaker 4: running the ball on the safer side and also, I mean, Waysan,
- 15:57Speaker 4: I got unbelievable faith in him that he's going.
- 15:59Speaker 3: To go make some out of nothing. I have full,
- 16:04Speaker 3: full intentions of giving the ball, whatever I can.
- 16:07Speaker 2: The way we talked about this also, like you're a
- 16:11Speaker 2: football player. Ultimately you don't shy away from contact. You
- 16:14Speaker 2: don't mind contact. You're physically strong. So was that process of,
- 16:19Speaker 2: of learning to take the safer route? Was that a
- 16:22Speaker 2: natural thing for you? How, how much effort went into that?
- 16:29Speaker 3: I would say the injury probably did that to me.
- 16:32Speaker 4: It's one of those things where you test the limits
- 16:37Speaker 4: of something until it goes the other way. I think
- 16:42Speaker 4: that was the most severe injury I've ever had in
- 16:46Speaker 4: my career. So just having that, it definitely shifts in
- 16:50Speaker 4: my mindset where this is past spring and fall. We're
- 16:54Speaker 4: practicing diving. diving instead of sliding, especially.
- 16:59Speaker 3: With the, you know, concussion things that goes on from
- 17:02Speaker 3: QB sliding. We just practice diving instead.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Taking a hit, just being more, not, not going full
- 17:12Speaker 4: head on with the head, you know, just learning to
- 17:15Speaker 4: break the head, fall away from where you get hit
- 17:17Speaker 4: from this small, this small things like that.
- 17:19Speaker 3: I can definitely help the fall in the head.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell show. Devin Dampier starting
- 17:27Speaker 2: quarterback at the university of Utah is our guest edition
- 17:30Speaker 2: with Deb brought to you by Culligan water of salt
- 17:32Speaker 2: Lake city, America first credit union and Valley plumbing, heating
- 17:36Speaker 2: and cooling. All right. So now it's another road trip. Crazy.
- 17:40Speaker 2: You're getting into the midpoint of the season. This is
- 17:43Speaker 2: only the second road game. You got to go on
- 17:45Speaker 2: the road to Boulder. This is a Colorado team. that
- 17:48Speaker 2: has a lot of things to figure out right now.
- 17:50Speaker 2: There's a couple of familiar faces on that side that
- 17:53Speaker 2: we'll get to here in just a second. But what
- 17:56Speaker 2: are your initial thoughts on this Colorado Buffaloes team, given
- 17:59Speaker 2: the tape you've seen?
- 18:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they've been competing in their games pretty well.
- 18:07Speaker 4: I think, you know, they had times where, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 4: the game starts to get the best of them at times.
- 18:13Speaker 3: But I mean, they just came off a bye week.
- 18:15Speaker 4: You know, I think it's they got kind of rid
- 18:18Speaker 4: of a couple of players on their team and they're
- 18:20Speaker 4: trying to make that shift. So they can be the
- 18:24Speaker 4: most prepared going into the rest of the season.
- 18:26Speaker 3: So I'm expecting, you know, a good opponent to come
- 18:28Speaker 3: out there.
- 18:29Speaker 4: And yeah, we got to put our best foot forward
- 18:33Speaker 4: when we go against them.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, former Ute, Isaac Wilson has been given
- 18:37Speaker 2: the start opposite you. He'll be the opposing quarterback. And
- 18:41Speaker 2: in the modern era of college football, this is a
- 18:44Speaker 2: much more normal thing where you play against a former teammate,
- 18:48Speaker 2: you know, maybe every dang week in this conference. Also,
- 18:52Speaker 2: Stokes is over there. What does that do? Does that
- 18:56Speaker 2: change anything? How do you react to that?
- 19:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think that really changes too much.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I honestly think it's just, it kind of just,
- 19:09Speaker 4: we respect those guys.
- 19:10Speaker 3: We love those guys.
- 19:12Speaker 4: You know, football, after you've been around somebody for so long,
- 19:15Speaker 4: you know, you just, you do genuinely care for them.
- 19:17Speaker 3: But, man, football is football, you know, and they know
- 19:21Speaker 3: that as well. You know, when the time comes, we
- 19:23Speaker 3: strap those helmets on. You know, it's all about what
- 19:26Speaker 3: happens on that field. And then, you know, afterwards, we'll
- 19:29Speaker 3: definitely show our love to each other and, you know,
- 19:31Speaker 3: go on.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Does Deion Sanders being the head coach change the vibe
- 19:37Speaker 2: at all? Because, I mean, he's one of the greatest
- 19:42Speaker 2: defensive backs of all time. He's one of the greatest
- 19:44Speaker 2: overall NFL football players of all time. He's an icon,
- 19:49Speaker 2: and he's the... competition. And obviously you don't have a
- 19:52Speaker 2: ton of interaction with an opposing head coach, but does
- 19:55Speaker 2: it change anything at all for you or any player
- 19:57Speaker 2: on this team?
- 20:00Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 20:02Speaker 4: I think, you know, we, we, we respect, and you know,
- 20:05Speaker 4: anyone that's able to earn a head coach job in
- 20:08Speaker 4: college football, um, you know, you, you gain a kind
- 20:11Speaker 4: of a lot of respect.
- 20:13Speaker 3: To be in that position and, uh, do what you do.
- 20:16Speaker 4: So, you know, we, I think we treat everybody, you know,
- 20:19Speaker 4: pretty equal. Um, I think he's got an amazing career
- 20:21Speaker 4: in NFL though, no doubt. Uh, definitely respected in that area,
- 20:25Speaker 4: but just as a head coach wise, you know, we,
- 20:28Speaker 4: we respect.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Everybody we go against.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Um, it's hard to have a job in college football.
- 20:34Speaker 4: So if you have one, you know, there's definitely respect
- 20:36Speaker 4: towards your name.
- 20:39Speaker 2: We didn't talk about this yet against Kansas. The kickoff
- 20:42Speaker 2: time got moved up, which was very weird. I mean,
- 20:45Speaker 2: from the fan, even from like, just, I'm going to
- 20:48Speaker 2: go to the game perspective. It was strange because you have,
- 20:51Speaker 2: you know, your, your routine already pictured in your mind that,
- 20:54Speaker 2: And again, not as a player, just as a person, like,
- 20:57Speaker 2: all right, I'm going to take the kids to do this.
- 20:58Speaker 2: And then I'm going to put them to bed and
- 21:00Speaker 2: then I'm going to get to the game and it'll
- 21:01Speaker 2: be perfect timing. And then you get a text or
- 21:04Speaker 2: a tweet and it's like, Nope, moving this thing up
- 21:06Speaker 2: to avoid the bad weather. What did that do to
- 21:09Speaker 2: you guys? Because obviously it's scheduled out a lot more
- 21:13Speaker 2: carefully for players than it is for fans. And you
- 21:16Speaker 2: got late notice that this kickoff was being pushed up.
- 21:19Speaker 2: How was it handled?
- 21:23Speaker 3: I think it was honestly fine. You know, 8-15, it's
- 21:28Speaker 3: a late start. I won't say it's not, but for
- 21:33Speaker 3: it to get moved up to sixes, it's like, oh.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Okay, bad. For us, it just became we had less time.
- 21:40Speaker 3: At the hotel of off time. That's really all that
- 21:43Speaker 3: kind of broke down.
- 21:45Speaker 4: We had like about two hours of off time at
- 21:48Speaker 4: the hotel instead of we would have had four if
- 21:51Speaker 4: it was at eight, so.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Not too different with that timing.
- 21:59Speaker 2: I was a skeptic. I'm superstitious. So I was like,
- 22:02Speaker 2: I don't know about a whiteout in a night game.
- 22:04Speaker 2: And ultimately, it looked great. You guys looked great. The
- 22:08Speaker 2: whole team played great. You got the win. That's all
- 22:10Speaker 2: that really matters. What'd you make of the whiteout? First
- 22:14Speaker 2: one at Rice Echo Stadium at night.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I was excited when they got presented and especially
- 22:21Speaker 4: seeing the helmets like a whole like two months ago.
- 22:24Speaker 4: It was like, you know, Scali asked for some of
- 22:27Speaker 4: our preferences on what we would change and stuff.
- 22:30Speaker 3: And I felt like, you know, us guys, we were
- 22:33Speaker 3: able to. make the helmet just slightly better. And it
- 22:35Speaker 3: was already, it was already tough, but.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Tell me, tell me the changes. Tell me the artistic
- 22:42Speaker 2: expression of Devin, damn peer. What, what, what made that
- 22:45Speaker 2: helmet better? What did you bring in that, that maybe
- 22:47Speaker 2: we would not have seen if it weren't for your opinions?
- 22:50Speaker 4: Speaker 4 07, I think the, the original, the original,
- 22:55Speaker 4: the helmet was a little bit more gray. So it,
- 22:58Speaker 4: It stood out from the white, so we wanted it
- 23:00Speaker 4: to flow better with all-white uniforms.
- 23:03Speaker 3: So we had.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Them lighten the gray of the, which was like, the
- 23:09Speaker 4: main color of the helmet was kind of grayish.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Okay, all right. So we kind of made that the
- 23:14Speaker 3: white and then made everything else. the grade of pop
- 23:18Speaker 3: out and stuff like that. But the red, the red
- 23:22Speaker 3: you was on there already.
- 23:23Speaker 4: There's a couple of, I think there was some on
- 23:26Speaker 4: the back that we took off maybe just to add.
- 23:29Speaker 3: More snow, the snow falling on the helmet.
- 23:32Speaker 4: But yeah, it was, it was already kind of there.
- 23:34Speaker 3: We just, we just put a little dab in it.
- 23:36Speaker 3: Speaker 2.
- 23:37Speaker 4: All right.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Well, they looked great. Now Somebody texted this. We were,
- 23:40Speaker 2: we were talking about this, I think on Monday, do
- 23:43Speaker 2: you get to, if, if Devin Dampier wants to keep
- 23:45Speaker 2: his hand painted, you know, special edition helmet, do you
- 23:49Speaker 2: get to keep that and put it in the home office?
- 23:53Speaker 4: For the previous years, the players I've had, we've had
- 23:56Speaker 4: to buy them.
- 23:57Speaker 3: If we want, if we want the helmets or not. Yeah.
- 24:01Speaker 3: But I mean, they're, they're at.
- 24:02Speaker 4: A pretty affordable price for us to be able to
- 24:05Speaker 4: get them. So I think, I think this might be
- 24:07Speaker 4: the helmet I do buy the first light out. Definitely
- 24:11Speaker 4: is going to have to happen.
- 24:12Speaker 2: All right. You already have that plan for like, where
- 24:14Speaker 2: are you going to like keep all the stuff? Do
- 24:16Speaker 2: you already have a spot in the house where you
- 24:18Speaker 2: keep your memorabilia? You're just at the beginning of this
- 24:20Speaker 2: whole journey where, you know, you're going to have NFL
- 24:22Speaker 2: jerseys and all that stuff to worry about. But do you,
- 24:25Speaker 2: do you already know what that looks like in your mind?
- 24:29Speaker 3: You know, I got an idea.
- 24:31Speaker 4: You know, it's hard to exactly make one of those
- 24:35Speaker 4: right now when you're, like, living in it, if that
- 24:38Speaker 4: makes sense.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Like, when I get the helmet, I'm going to be like,
- 24:42Speaker 3: I just wore it. So, like, it isn't going to be, like,
- 24:44Speaker 3: that cool yet. But then, like, yeah, when I get, I.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Don't know, second, third year in my NFL career, then
- 24:51Speaker 4: it's going to be like, when I see the helmet
- 24:52Speaker 4: and I walk back to my house, it's going to
- 24:54Speaker 4: be like, oh, yeah, that was tough. All right.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Well, when you get it, bring it into the studio
- 24:58Speaker 2: with you next time. We'll keep it for you.
- 25:00Speaker 3: No problem.
- 25:00Speaker 2: We'll put it back in behind me on the, on
- 25:03Speaker 2: the YouTube. Perfect. Dev, good luck. Stay healthy in Colorado.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us. I know the schedule gets a
- 25:12Speaker 2: little bit crazy sometimes, and we appreciate you making time
- 25:16Speaker 2: and we'll talk to you soon.
- 25:18Speaker 3: You know it. Appreciate you.
- 25:20Speaker 2: That is Devin Dampier. Dishing with Dev is brought to
- 25:22Speaker 2: you by Culligan Water of Salt Lake City, America First
- 25:25Speaker 2: Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. You just
- 25:31Speaker 2: can't help but love the guy. Great player. Awesome dude.
- 25:36Speaker 2: And apparently, he's got a nice aesthetic sense that maybe
- 25:40Speaker 2: saved us from gray helmets and got your white-out helmets
- 25:43Speaker 2: to be truly white. This year with Deb, that conversation
- 25:49Speaker 2: will be available on the ESPN 700 Sports app and
- 25:52Speaker 2: on the ESPN700Sports. com website.
