- 0:00Speaker 1: The Mark Simone Show on 710WOR. Well, it's the 25th
- 0:08Speaker 1: anniversary of September 11th, 2001. We'll talk to some of
- 0:14Speaker 1: the people that covered it that morning. We'll talk to
- 0:17Speaker 1: Scott Shannon a little later this hour. He was on
- 0:20Speaker 1: the air for many, many, many hours. The morning guys
- 0:23Speaker 1: were all on live, so they had to cover it
- 0:26Speaker 1: as it unfolded. Let's take some calls. Let's just see what,
- 0:29Speaker 1: because people have a lot to say about what they
- 0:31Speaker 1: went through that day. Let's go to Mike in Florida. Mike,
- 0:33Speaker 1: how are you doing?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Good morning, Mark.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yes, Mike.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I remember that day being a Manhattanite, getting the vibe
- 0:40Speaker 2: from other people like my father and brother in Queens
- 0:43Speaker 2: that Manhattanites were a little bit more of a target.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And there was a certain element of paranoia following a
- 0:52Speaker 2: few days afterwards. I remember getting on the train at
- 0:54Speaker 2: some point, the subway train, And I'm sitting in the
- 0:57Speaker 2: car and like a bunch of guys came in wearing
- 1:00Speaker 2: traditional Middle Eastern garb. And I was like, oh my God,
- 1:03Speaker 2: what is this? And then I remember walking down in
- 1:06Speaker 2: Chelsea one morning and over my shoulder comes this loud
- 1:12Speaker 2: roar of a jet. And it couldn't have been, you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: it felt like it was like right behind me. And
- 1:17Speaker 2: that freaked me out. It was an Air Force jet
- 1:19Speaker 2: patrolling the area because they were still patrolling things. And
- 1:22Speaker 2: it was, such an odd feeling of sort of like
- 1:25Speaker 2: quiet and paranoia and camaraderie, all sort of all mixed
- 1:30Speaker 2: together among the populace.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32Speaker 1: All right, Mike. Good, uh, good, good, uh, call. Um, yeah,
- 1:37Speaker 1: there were, they banned all air traffic from over New
- 1:40Speaker 1: York city, but there were fighter jets patrolling over New
- 1:43Speaker 1: York city, flying constantly all over the place and occasionally helicopters,
- 1:47Speaker 1: police helicopters, that sort of stuff. Hey, the other good
- 1:51Speaker 1: thing is, um, it came out of that. We, didn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: have the police department. It was great, but it basically
- 1:57Speaker 1: just patrolled the streets and that was it. We didn't
- 2:00Speaker 1: have a big intelligence capability around the world, but we
- 2:04Speaker 1: suddenly over the next year or two got one and
- 2:06Speaker 1: thank Ray Kelly for that. He realized we couldn't depend
- 2:10Speaker 1: on the federal government or the FBI or anybody for
- 2:13Speaker 1: a warning. We had to have our own intelligence. He
- 2:15Speaker 1: created a massive infrastructure for that where he placed detectives
- 2:20Speaker 1: all over the world in hotspots to you know, be
- 2:23Speaker 1: the first to learn of anything, any threat anywhere. We
- 2:26Speaker 1: still have that, uh, today, thanks to him. So, uh,
- 2:30Speaker 1: all over the world, we've got detectives, we've got people there.
- 2:32Speaker 1: We've got people that speak different languages that, uh, uh,
- 2:37Speaker 1: work with other intelligence of people around the world, but
- 2:39Speaker 1: just strictly for the NYPD, get us the information directly.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And first also, and this was controversial, you had to, uh,
- 2:47Speaker 1: start putting people at, uh, you know, in, in certain, uh,
- 2:51Speaker 1: There were some very controversial mosques and other places. You
- 2:54Speaker 1: had to infiltrate them with people that spoke the language
- 2:57Speaker 1: just to learn if anything was happening. And that started,
- 3:01Speaker 1: the NYPD continues to do that stuff to this day.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Let's go to Tom in Connecticut. Tom, how are you doing? Hi, Matt.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Good morning. Just a couple of remembrances. I'm a retired
- 3:16Speaker 3: air traffic controller. And there was a flight. a scheduled
- 3:21Speaker 3: flight out of Bradley, which has happened, going to Florida.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And one of the planes that hit the World Trade
- 3:31Speaker 3: Center almost had a mini collision with them. And the
- 3:36Speaker 3: air traffic controllers in New York were scrambling, but they
- 3:41Speaker 3: pointed out that the plane flying down the Hudson River wasn't, Yeah, it.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Was a renegade plane. That's a good point. Well, thanks, Tom.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It was a bright, sunny day that day. That's the
- 3:56Speaker 1: reason the attack was able to happen. Had it been
- 3:58Speaker 1: a cloudy day or the weather had been bad, they
- 4:00Speaker 1: would have waited. These guys obviously weren't trained pilots. So
- 4:05Speaker 1: what they did was they used the Hudson River, starting
- 4:09Speaker 1: around Albany, and they knew the Hudson River went right
- 4:13Speaker 1: to the World Trade Center. So they looked down and
- 4:15Speaker 1: just followed the Hudson River all the way in. needing
- 4:19Speaker 1: a bright, sunny day to do that. But, you know, also,
- 4:23Speaker 1: it was a tremendous intelligence failure. Federal government. It happened
- 4:28Speaker 1: under the Clinton administration when he put in, oh, that
- 4:32Speaker 1: awful CIA director. What was his name? I think it
- 4:34Speaker 1: was Deutsch. This was some woke CIA director who decided
- 4:39Speaker 1: we didn't need to use informants. He cut all that off.
- 4:43Speaker 1: He said, we have satellite pictures. We can see everything
- 4:46Speaker 1: on the ground. We don't ever need to use any
- 4:48Speaker 1: informants again. So he cut all that off. Had we
- 4:52Speaker 1: been using informants, we might have been able to learn
- 4:54Speaker 1: something ahead of time. Also, there was this wall that
- 4:58Speaker 1: had been put up. The CIA and the FBI were
- 5:01Speaker 1: not allowed to talk to each other. So the terrorists
- 5:05Speaker 1: like Mohammed Atta in Germany, other places, CIA is looking
- 5:10Speaker 1: at this guy knowing he's probably a terrorist. He comes
- 5:13Speaker 1: to the U.S., And the FBI is watching this guy,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and he's taking flying lessons. But the instructor later said
- 5:23Speaker 1: he took lessons in how to fly the plane. He
- 5:26Speaker 1: didn't want any lessons in how to land the plane,
- 5:28Speaker 1: which is a little suspicious. But had the CIA been
- 5:31Speaker 1: able to talk to the FBI and put two and
- 5:33Speaker 1: two together, everything might have been different. They might have
- 5:36Speaker 1: figured this out ahead of time. But that was later corrected.
- 5:40Speaker 1: You have the 9-11 Commission who discovered all of that
- 5:42Speaker 1: and corrected it and put things back. The way they
- 5:45Speaker 1: should be. Hey, let's take a break for all the
- 5:49Speaker 1: latest news. When we come back, we'll talk to the
- 5:51Speaker 1: legendary Scott Shannon. He was on that morning. It all
- 5:55Speaker 1: unfolded while his show was on. He covered it all live.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It was quite a day for him. We'll talk to
- 6:00Speaker 1: him next. And we'll talk to Warner Wolf, who was
- 6:05Speaker 1: quite a part of that story, covering it live. And
- 6:08Speaker 1: a whole lot more coming up. It's Mark Simone here,
- 6:11Speaker 1: 9 to noon every day, 710WOR.
