- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Not an Other football podcast
- 0:07Speaker 1: here in Spain Cable Roig and we adding the fantastic
- 0:11Speaker 1: Rosie Maguire's with myself, Simon Drley and Jackie Mcamara, and
- 0:14Speaker 1: we've got another ex teammate of Earls still Joe mother.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Guys, have you survived your first night in cable? Roig?
- 0:22Speaker 3: Just about just about? Like our voices, A wee bit horse,
- 0:26Speaker 3: but I'll get there.
- 0:28Speaker 2: So how songs?
- 0:29Speaker 3: All right? Yeah, I'm enjoying life and just glad to
- 0:32Speaker 3: come over here and celebrate Celtic achieving a double and
- 0:38Speaker 3: you know it's happy days. So we were talking obviously
- 0:41Speaker 3: good Peter Grant, I had another teammate, Earl was on
- 0:44Speaker 3: a recent episode and he was talking about the six
- 0:47Speaker 3: years from eighty nine to ninety five and the most
- 0:51Speaker 3: success Soul took money Scottish Cup. But you're the man
- 0:53Speaker 3: that took us over the line in eighty nine. Yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 3: can you remember that day?
- 0:57Speaker 2: Can you talk us through it?
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yep? Well, on the back of this centenary year, we
- 1:02Speaker 3: were looking to probably springboard and there was just a
- 1:07Speaker 3: lack of investment in the lost a few good players. Yeah,
- 1:13Speaker 3: you know, Frank had left but she was a talisman
- 1:18Speaker 3: through the soul. Seemed to be the centenary when he
- 1:20Speaker 3: arrived in October, but he did so well. He left
- 1:26Speaker 3: halfway through that eighty nine season and Rangers were going
- 1:30Speaker 3: for the treble. They were doing well. We've kind of
- 1:33Speaker 3: lost a wee bit of pace with them. The only
- 1:36Speaker 3: thing we had left was probably the Cup, and it
- 1:41Speaker 3: was everybody was looking towards Rangers achieving a treble. You know,
- 1:47Speaker 3: that's always the case of always the team in format.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Usually it's a Celtic and Rangers and it's a final
- 1:55Speaker 3: since a one off game. But I had previously played
- 2:00Speaker 3: the Aberdeen as I center forward, and I was always
- 2:06Speaker 3: When I joined Celtic, it put me in either wing,
- 2:11Speaker 3: particularly right, to try and create chances for Frank and Andy.
- 2:14Speaker 2: What did you did?
- 2:15Speaker 3: You know? It didn't really bother me. I mean, he
- 2:21Speaker 3: started gave me a kind of free role. But I
- 2:23Speaker 3: went out to that kind of right wing on my
- 2:25Speaker 3: debut and I had a great debut and we won
- 2:29Speaker 3: five now, but it was all about geting Frank and
- 2:32Speaker 3: Andy the service. So they started banging in goals left,
- 2:37Speaker 3: right and sent and and we did so well. But
- 2:44Speaker 3: I knew it was going to be difficult for me
- 2:45Speaker 3: getting through the middle again. So but when Frank left,
- 2:48Speaker 3: I thought I might get away sniff at playing through
- 2:51Speaker 3: the middle, but he put and the Mark McGee up.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I was still again. So we went to Alberdeen Udy
- 3:03Speaker 3: and they played a game up there and Andy. It
- 3:07Speaker 3: was a bit of a clash and Andy got kicked
- 3:10Speaker 3: in the head, but he's he damaged his eye, so
- 3:14Speaker 3: that was him out for the Cup final and I
- 3:18Speaker 3: got more opportunity. The last three or four games of
- 3:21Speaker 3: the season, they play through the middle. So you played
- 3:23Speaker 3: seeing the lead up to that in the other rounds,
- 3:25Speaker 3: have you not played as much then I played that season?
- 3:30Speaker 3: It was that was played by a wee bit injury
- 3:32Speaker 3: to start the season, so was in and it abut
- 3:34Speaker 3: a fortune and then I came back and about a
- 3:36Speaker 3: form and then I got more opportunities center forward. So
- 3:40Speaker 3: the last three games this season we won one now
- 3:43Speaker 3: and I scored in every game. So I'm going into
- 3:45Speaker 3: the Cup final with a lot of confidence and the
- 3:49Speaker 3: quietly confident, you know, but we knew the noise across
- 3:52Speaker 3: the road was that they were going to achieve the
- 3:56Speaker 3: treble and all that. But as I said it was
- 3:59Speaker 3: a one off and I was on form, so I
- 4:02Speaker 3: kind of had that confidence going out of the game.
- 4:04Speaker 1: So you're talking about injury, So we're talking yesterday about
- 4:08Speaker 1: the rocket, the.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Oxygen, the hyperbari high chamber high.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody's got an experience here that.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I remember it coming in, coming in on trolleys and
- 4:26Speaker 3: things like that. Put into the treatment room and in
- 4:28Speaker 3: the gym. No, it was a jimmy. So anybody that
- 4:32Speaker 3: was on it was half because anybody was on it,
- 4:34Speaker 3: the lights used to go off, the towels.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And over the pot holes.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Cost your phobic you are, So what was your My
- 4:40Speaker 3: experience was? I think it was when I think it
- 4:43Speaker 3: was nineteen ninety Charlie Nicholas came back, remember, and Charlie
- 4:51Speaker 3: was always a bit of a kidding a bit of
- 4:53Speaker 3: the place, and I think I had a hamstring injury.
- 4:56Speaker 3: So Brian Scott Scott to put me into the chamber.
- 5:00Speaker 3: You know you're going to going to the back of
- 5:02Speaker 3: the thing and and there it's like there's no way
- 5:06Speaker 3: they will be out. You get locked in and there's
- 5:08Speaker 3: only a panic button inside that you see how the
- 5:14Speaker 3: boys are coming. I was a win A couple of
- 5:15Speaker 3: windows on either side, and you see the boys coming
- 5:17Speaker 3: in and at the gym, you know, and they would
- 5:19Speaker 3: be chatting on the window and things like that. So
- 5:23Speaker 3: my experiences and I took a couple of papers on
- 5:25Speaker 3: me and I'm just you had to sit in there
- 5:27Speaker 3: for about half an hour or something, that's half And
- 5:31Speaker 3: basically the theory was that they get your blood flowing
- 5:35Speaker 3: a lot quicker. So that was a theory. So I
- 5:39Speaker 3: was in there and god, there's my bloodbell floor. Then
- 5:42Speaker 3: it was oh, sitting there just reading the paper and
- 5:46Speaker 3: then I was a huge bang the inside it and
- 5:52Speaker 3: I thinksh something going hanging and saying, then my nose,
- 5:54Speaker 3: my nose started bleeding. That's said myself, bagging the window
- 6:02Speaker 3: and bagging the window, and everybody's walking by. Give me
- 6:06Speaker 3: the up cover the claret. But blood was shouting case
- 6:13Speaker 3: noy can hear you? And I'm used to hit the
- 6:16Speaker 3: panic button and then you bride Scott came in and
- 6:19Speaker 3: I was I think they were carrying that's chamber if
- 6:24Speaker 3: I got to change the oxygen. Silly, silly, Well, but
- 6:31Speaker 3: what wasn't a good experience but the zero the guys
- 6:37Speaker 3: are all waiting for you Charlie was just simply once.
- 6:42Speaker 3: However it was. It was a good laugh, but it
- 6:45Speaker 3: wasn't a nice experience.
- 6:48Speaker 2: You went up twice, or is it I was any
- 6:53Speaker 2: probably two.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Of them great great man as those great clubs at
- 6:57Speaker 3: the time I joined thirty sign. I signed s Form
- 7:01Speaker 3: in nineteen eighty and they went full time in eighty
- 7:07Speaker 3: five eighty eighty five. And then when I got great
- 7:11Speaker 3: abide tmate then they had it was a full squad.
- 7:16Speaker 3: One of the couple in US Cup eighty three, I
- 7:18Speaker 3: was over gothen Berger. That was the thing that you
- 7:21Speaker 3: were at that game. The club took you because you're
- 7:24Speaker 3: a party of me and my dad to go. So
- 7:28Speaker 3: we were over and that was great, great experience playing
- 7:33Speaker 3: me all these guys. But that was the thing back then,
- 7:36Speaker 3: even s forms could go up and play three reserve
- 7:40Speaker 3: games or something like that a season. You could go
- 7:44Speaker 3: and train with the first team boys. You don't hear
- 7:46Speaker 3: that now, no, So that must have been a great
- 7:49Speaker 3: experience for you though, that environment between andros Moll and
- 7:55Speaker 3: Gordon's stacking and again all these guys, you know, great
- 8:00Speaker 3: for your boy. At this point then I was only
- 8:03Speaker 3: as I said, I was only twelve when I went
- 8:05Speaker 3: there and then I went full time and just at
- 8:09Speaker 3: the sixteenth when do you make your daddy, just shortly
- 8:14Speaker 3: after I'd been three months after a ye, So it
- 8:17Speaker 3: was it was a great experience, great experience because he played.
- 8:22Speaker 3: He sort of arranged this game. I was playing for
- 8:25Speaker 3: Scotland school Boys and he arranged this game at Cowden
- 8:28Speaker 3: Beef and they I went up there to school with
- 8:33Speaker 3: a school uniform and my dad. I got the last
- 8:37Speaker 3: couple of periods at school and they were up there
- 8:40Speaker 3: and I walked into the dressing room and I thought
- 8:42Speaker 3: it was a reserve fixed us. You know you're and
- 8:45Speaker 3: the is. Honestly, I had a great I remember the
- 8:49Speaker 3: uniform it was gray and he had a gray shot
- 8:52Speaker 3: and I'm not kidding you just went the sweat because
- 8:56Speaker 3: you know the players that the full European team. That
- 9:00Speaker 3: is when the cop was sitting there, I was late
- 9:03Speaker 3: and Master's Stuart Kennedy, he Molla mcleay's do the bell
- 9:08Speaker 3: Gordon strike the world playing joy So Sir Alex has
- 9:14Speaker 3: come in and get yourself strips and that was nears
- 9:17Speaker 3: playing with these guys and one two double. I got
- 9:19Speaker 3: to two goals, so that was like his test and
- 9:23Speaker 3: then he says if you could handle it, See if
- 9:25Speaker 3: I could handle it exactly. So I like to say
- 9:28Speaker 3: to my dad after the game, that's Sam ready. He says,
- 9:30Speaker 3: I'll have him up at December. He says, no, you
- 9:33Speaker 3: may wait another year left school. Yeah, so that was
- 9:38Speaker 3: it's too young and he left school and he had
- 9:41Speaker 3: done his arms and how long then are you there
- 9:43Speaker 3: before you got your lift to shelter it? So he
- 9:45Speaker 3: want he wanted me. I played there for three years.
- 9:49Speaker 3: He left to go to Manchester United in eighty six
- 9:56Speaker 3: and my contract was up the following year, so there
- 10:03Speaker 3: was a chance that I might be gone room or whatever.
- 10:06Speaker 3: But just sat to go to United United.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Talking that at the time.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Yeah, you spoke about it at the time. And then
- 10:15Speaker 3: I came down in eighty seven, November eighty seven and
- 10:20Speaker 3: Celtics teenary years just kicked off and Frank's just joined.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I just played the girls.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Did that come about?
- 10:26Speaker 3: So you're talking about the chance you might have went
- 10:28Speaker 3: before getting It was all transfer system back then, and
- 10:31Speaker 3: it was pre Bossman. It's so it was a wee
- 10:36Speaker 3: bit more difficult to negotiate with teams. I have agents
- 10:40Speaker 3: talking to clubs and things like that. Bit you only
- 10:42Speaker 3: relied on what the press were printing. So I had
- 10:46Speaker 3: all the clubs all watching me at the time and
- 10:48Speaker 3: it was in the press every week. So I got
- 10:51Speaker 3: my move in eighty seven. Ian Porterfield was a manager
- 10:55Speaker 3: and he's he says, you've got to go down and
- 10:58Speaker 3: talk to Celtic transfer. It was I think it was
- 11:07Speaker 3: six fifty fifty was that it was a there was
- 11:10Speaker 3: a million pound deal involved, but it was like I
- 11:15Speaker 3: had to change because of the negotiations as well. So
- 11:22Speaker 3: that's whatever club was prepared to pay the feet at
- 11:24Speaker 3: a time. So Liverpool and man United were waiting interested,
- 11:29Speaker 3: they were waiting. I Kenny was waiting as well. If
- 11:33Speaker 3: I didn't say if a Celtic, I knew had something else.
- 11:36Speaker 3: So it's not bad something. This was all there Sky
- 11:40Speaker 3: sports and things like that. You know before the hype.
- 11:43Speaker 2: But when you want a Celtic again, big characters.
- 11:48Speaker 3: I think I was just starting as you were coming
- 11:50Speaker 3: into your Celtic that's straight. I remember REALI and Braid.
- 11:55Speaker 2: You get helped.
- 11:56Speaker 3: We're talking about the house environment in the dress room
- 11:59Speaker 3: the boys used to the day one I signed in
- 12:03Speaker 3: a Friday thirteenth and them and the fourth. I made
- 12:07Speaker 3: my debut against Dundee and I walked into the dress
- 12:11Speaker 3: room and like, you just want to see all the players.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So I played against him a few weeks earlier, and
- 12:18Speaker 3: they were all over you, and oh Man, you know,
- 12:21Speaker 3: and they were just tired above Yug and your hog
- 12:23Speaker 3: and a great welcome to the dressing room and you're
- 12:30Speaker 3: kind of that kind of broke up. And as it
- 12:32Speaker 3: broke up, Macas is just stritten thereby man and I
- 12:36Speaker 3: looked up and all the jerseys were all hanging up
- 12:38Speaker 3: like that was this week, tiny view, wines, shorts, Pegg pet,
- 12:43Speaker 3: the soaked Petiet, you buy we we We're all laughed
- 12:49Speaker 3: at we go. So then it kicked on for there
- 12:53Speaker 3: they went to tails. I had a cot bed in
- 12:55Speaker 3: my room. I had the high chairs at the pre
- 12:57Speaker 3: market meals. Fai's rush. The thing I think this stretched
- 13:01Speaker 3: into turned up at the rest. It was the high
- 13:06Speaker 3: chair was sitting for you. Fucking was we toys my
- 13:09Speaker 3: first morning granted put the Power Rangers, a my space
- 13:13Speaker 3: that you play part of exists. It was great though,
- 13:20Speaker 3: because you had the They were a great and strong
- 13:23Speaker 3: characters in the address, so you had, Yeah, I think skin,
- 13:27Speaker 3: but yeah, there was other things they did as well.
- 13:29Speaker 3: They wind ups. But Big Bully used to have us
- 13:32Speaker 3: saying if a happy Alfy, partly be happy on it.
- 13:35Speaker 3: He never stoked his day anything wild as long as
- 13:39Speaker 3: you hard the songs. We produced the goods training and
- 13:43Speaker 3: on a Saturday, which almost happened. So it's good.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Who was your.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Favorite teammates to play with in through your career? Maybe
- 13:50Speaker 3: not necessarily to Celtic, it's great. It's funny you say, hey,
- 13:53Speaker 3: see like you've got inspirational players like you know when
- 13:56Speaker 3: I joined Sheelter, knew hey because I played up at
- 14:01Speaker 3: Aberdeen Jim Batt and Gordon was there but Gordon left,
- 14:06Speaker 3: but Jim Bett and then creative player great. When I
- 14:10Speaker 3: met Celtic was Paul. I knew Paul was guys guys
- 14:14Speaker 3: like that are going to Gee Service.
- 14:17Speaker 2: So pretty special players.
- 14:20Speaker 3: So but he had inspirational players that Tommy, who was
- 14:23Speaker 3: Celtic through. I knew Tommy because they stand growing up
- 14:27Speaker 3: and his mum was a customer to the shop and
- 14:30Speaker 3: all that kind of thing. My dad's show up a business,
- 14:33Speaker 3: so I knew all they they coming through the stands,
- 14:37Speaker 3: so and I had played by very quite at the
- 14:41Speaker 3: school boys. You know this guy, so I knew some
- 14:43Speaker 3: of them, A big starkey as well. Matt McGee was there,
- 14:47Speaker 3: so it was we kind of followed each other's career
- 14:53Speaker 3: there a started when I came in the back, but
- 14:57Speaker 3: he was there was guys there I knew. But they
- 14:58Speaker 3: were strong characters and great players. No foreigners, just the
- 15:05Speaker 3: Irish boys, you know, just that was that was really foreigners,
- 15:10Speaker 3: but no great great group of boys. That was a
- 15:12Speaker 3: small squad. Yeah, just one dressing room about nineteen players,
- 15:17Speaker 3: twenty players, and that's what was used to look the
- 15:20Speaker 3: whole double only a couple of subs. Different. Now you've
- 15:25Speaker 3: got two teams on and so many subs and it's
- 15:30Speaker 3: changed theirs. So you're a long time retired as we know, Yes,
- 15:34Speaker 3: but you're doing something just now which you were talking
- 15:36Speaker 3: to me about. You want to let us Celtic Legends museum.
- 15:39Speaker 3: It's a Celtic Legends museum. It's a thing that I've
- 15:42Speaker 3: had a wee passion for, as I said, growing up
- 15:46Speaker 3: as a Celtic fan. And my dad used to play
- 15:50Speaker 3: football and he knew Bobby my book pretty well and
- 15:54Speaker 3: they would allays meet up and have a shandy in
- 15:57Speaker 3: a game. That one game over at Boby gave went
- 16:03Speaker 3: for a drink it with my dad and myself after
- 16:05Speaker 3: the game. I was only a week kid, and that
- 16:07Speaker 3: time you could get to the lounge and have a
- 16:09Speaker 3: wee coke and things like that. So it was he
- 16:13Speaker 3: gave me this bag and inside the bag was a jersey.
- 16:15Speaker 3: He's jersey was one of the last jerseys I had.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I was only a young kid to fight six years
- 16:19Speaker 3: of age, so I'm running about the problem with jersey,
- 16:22Speaker 3: soaking wet jersey and you know, and I kept it
- 16:25Speaker 3: and I thought that it was great, you know, So
- 16:27Speaker 3: I looked after it, and then I started collecting them
- 16:31Speaker 3: when I was older, and throughout the years, I was
- 16:35Speaker 3: getting really good jerseys. There was something that I just
- 16:37Speaker 3: had that something collecting things. And then so this museum
- 16:41Speaker 3: I started, Yeah, huge collection.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 16:49Speaker 3: The thing is, I've also got a few guys that
- 16:53Speaker 3: have have helped other collectors that I know very well,
- 16:56Speaker 3: and they've chipped in the great items. So that's what
- 16:58Speaker 3: I'm trying to do. I'm trying to get them back
- 17:00Speaker 3: to the Celtic fans and in a way it's say
- 17:05Speaker 3: I was trying to do it maybe the Exhibition Center
- 17:08Speaker 3: or something like that. It just try to get it
- 17:09Speaker 3: out there and display it all. Let the fans come
- 17:13Speaker 3: up against you know, maybe seeing that's the closest seat
- 17:19Speaker 3: of these legends that these jerseys. Story behind every jersey,
- 17:25Speaker 3: they're all through the big games. The authenticity is there
- 17:31Speaker 3: so you can read about it. If it's a Cup
- 17:33Speaker 3: final jersey where it's embroidered, that's the player's jersey. Now
- 17:38Speaker 3: it's hard for Celtic to have a museum because the
- 17:41Speaker 3: player's got everything. You know yourselves, he's kept the kits
- 17:44Speaker 3: after a final and you go to the medals. So
- 17:47Speaker 3: there's no much that Celtics a football club can throw
- 17:50Speaker 3: in a museum but the players collection. So I've gathered
- 17:55Speaker 3: quite a lot of players collection. I've got does jerseys
- 18:01Speaker 3: I go for Jinkie Big Bell A safe place they're
- 18:06Speaker 3: run A safe place, Oh they would be. They've got
- 18:08Speaker 3: to be in a safe place. But I'm hoping to
- 18:10Speaker 3: ground all the supporters clubs right, take it on tour
- 18:15Speaker 3: and display it starting in in maybe forty six weeks time,
- 18:20Speaker 3: and then they can all get a chance to or
- 18:22Speaker 3: the public can get a chance to see it and
- 18:25Speaker 3: read about the story, read about the jerseys and the
- 18:26Speaker 3: player that wore the jerseys and the match itself. It's
- 18:29Speaker 3: not about Celtic Football Club. It's about the players and
- 18:33Speaker 3: the players that wore that jersey. So you're reading about
- 18:35Speaker 3: the history of them. It's pretty incredible because you're talking
- 18:38Speaker 3: about what we kept in the back of the day.
- 18:40Speaker 3: But nowadays I think players smoke jerseys at halftime they'll
- 18:43Speaker 3: get four manage up. But we were lucky to get
- 18:45Speaker 3: one it then the long John Clapp has been lying
- 18:49Speaker 3: was just Kip man and it just a number then
- 18:50Speaker 3: as well, then you were lucky if.
- 18:52Speaker 2: You got a jersey then. So to get this collection, well,
- 18:55Speaker 2: if you.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Think John Clapp was tight, nearly, mocking was nearly as
- 18:59Speaker 3: well anything. And you did have to hear that jersey
- 19:03Speaker 3: because the thing is that you're rightly you say that
- 19:07Speaker 3: they're getting new jerseys every game now, but back in
- 19:10Speaker 3: the day they were washed. There were season jerseys. These
- 19:13Speaker 3: lasted the full season, so there was only special new
- 19:18Speaker 3: jerseys made for every if we were in a cup final,
- 19:21Speaker 3: So that was that's pretty unique and you never ever
- 19:25Speaker 3: got them. I was fortunate enough to be sponsored by
- 19:30Speaker 3: Umbro when I joined Celtic and launched the new the books,
- 19:34Speaker 3: the very first book wash No, this is actually it
- 19:39Speaker 3: was before that. It was very These were get samples
- 19:41Speaker 3: that were coming over for Brazil. Fantastic are great, but
- 19:45Speaker 3: the lasted and sports companies don't want them to last.
- 19:49Speaker 3: They're made to dust. These were too good, so they
- 19:54Speaker 3: were great for me and I used them for a
- 19:56Speaker 3: couple of years, but I was doing all the kids.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Oh they came the modeling and the new season strips
- 20:03Speaker 3: that were coming out, so I was getting to keep
- 20:05Speaker 3: them all and I was getting to you, do you
- 20:08Speaker 3: have an idea back then about what you were going
- 20:09Speaker 3: to do with them or I just kidded them. I can't,
- 20:12Speaker 3: but I didn't have an idea that was going to
- 20:13Speaker 3: display them. It's just getting together with a couple of
- 20:17Speaker 3: other collectors because they're just lying in your house. It's
- 20:19Speaker 3: like players I've actually got. I've actually got a couple
- 20:23Speaker 3: of jerseys long years be your name on the back
- 20:25Speaker 3: of it, and the testimonial game and all that kind
- 20:28Speaker 3: so that the themes there when you've got a history
- 20:30Speaker 3: of cup finals and famous players and then those testimonials
- 20:35Speaker 3: and goalkeepers jerseys. So if you think of that range,
- 20:38Speaker 3: you could go up to the hundreds are displaying every jersey,
- 20:43Speaker 3: but they changed so often nowadays.
- 20:45Speaker 2: So changes every that's another thing.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Back then, they don't even change the crews crewing it.
- 20:51Speaker 3: That's just the materials. It's funny to see all the
- 20:54Speaker 3: materials I liked. I like the old fashioned heavy cotton,
- 20:58Speaker 3: so they were great. But it's going to be interesting
- 21:02Speaker 3: that I hope. Well, the fans will love it and
- 21:05Speaker 3: they get the fans love it, and the families they
- 21:07Speaker 3: bring the kids along it. Where do you take it
- 21:09Speaker 3: in the support supports clubs. I've I've contacted several supports
- 21:13Speaker 3: clubs who've got large venues, large halls. I can set
- 21:16Speaker 3: this up and display it around the halls and keep
- 21:19Speaker 3: it open during the day and see. So I am
- 21:24Speaker 3: hoping it will it will work and get a good
- 21:27Speaker 3: response for.
- 21:27Speaker 2: You, and will you present at that.
- 21:30Speaker 3: I'll just be a day every five minute talk and
- 21:33Speaker 3: then beforehand and then let people enjoy and read the
- 21:36Speaker 3: display cards, read about the jersey, the history behind it.
- 21:40Speaker 3: So it goes on the way back some of the jams,
- 21:44Speaker 3: Jock Steam's jersey's coronation Cup. You know you've got the
- 21:50Speaker 3: Lisbon some of the Lisbon stuff has a big centenary display.
- 21:54Speaker 3: There's goalkeepers testimonial matches, all the tip players that all
- 21:57Speaker 3: had testimonials. The idea is to put a big picture
- 22:00Speaker 3: up as well, So that's all. It's going to be
- 22:04Speaker 3: better interest. You're doing that obviously in recent times as well.
- 22:08Speaker 3: We were touching on it earlier. Your career coming to
- 22:12Speaker 3: an end, you'd to be health scared as well, don't you.
- 22:14Speaker 3: I did talking about this yesterday and different players of
- 22:18Speaker 3: team had a lot of unfortunate COVID. Rather, COVID was
- 22:22Speaker 3: bad for me as well. I never told anybody as well.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Just I came down that as my sister found me,
- 22:30Speaker 3: and that was bad. Ended up in the royal family.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Just COVID affected people badly and ended up on machines
- 22:41Speaker 3: and things like I get in there trying to get
- 22:43Speaker 3: oxygen and as well, it was just just a batsan
- 22:46Speaker 3: and nothing you could say. You know, you just lay there,
- 22:49Speaker 3: you know, that's frightening, and then things start running through
- 22:53Speaker 3: your head, you know, your family, maybe daughter and things
- 22:56Speaker 3: like that. So but I was fortunate that I got
- 23:00Speaker 3: to back the attention of the staff at the Royal
- 23:05Speaker 3: and looked after us, and they eventually got out and
- 23:09Speaker 3: took my time. Let everybody else. It's you know, it's
- 23:13Speaker 3: hard to daly and afterwards you're saying, wow, I'm lucky, bizarre,
- 23:17Speaker 3: and you hear people passed the being people that didn't
- 23:20Speaker 3: believe it. That's the thing that was a worrying thing.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Didn't believe it long being hospital didn't be in a
- 23:28Speaker 3: week or so, maybe in great days. And then I
- 23:33Speaker 3: got out and I was just to go home and
- 23:34Speaker 3: rest because they were needing the beds. It was, it
- 23:37Speaker 3: was really bad. The wars were full, so I was
- 23:40Speaker 3: wanting any I kind of stand being in it, and
- 23:44Speaker 3: I think that if you want it, you'll get it
- 23:46Speaker 3: type thing, you know, So I just can they be
- 23:51Speaker 3: in there any longer? So it was bad that you
- 23:54Speaker 3: hear it. Let's say, bespoke about it the other day. There,
- 23:57Speaker 3: you know, the teammates, teammates it part away. I'm you know,
- 24:02Speaker 3: I've probably can ten years after you guys are fifteen years.
- 24:06Speaker 3: But the guys I played me and Summer part like Tommy.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Tommy affected everybody, I think. But when you share Tommy
- 24:15Speaker 3: as I can as a coach, everybody was affected by
- 24:18Speaker 3: it because he was passing on so much good information.
- 24:21Speaker 3: But he was like that as a player as well.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Was like that as a as a player as well.
- 24:25Speaker 3: His legacy obviously was as a manager. It's probably my
- 24:28Speaker 3: best manager. He might be said the same. You've been
- 24:31Speaker 3: at a stage of your career where you're really need somebody.
- 24:34Speaker 3: You needed see that team where you needed managers on
- 24:37Speaker 3: the pack on the part was like that as a
- 24:39Speaker 3: player as well. Ay, so Tommy could talk you through
- 24:42Speaker 3: your game, coming over before the game, at halftime and
- 24:45Speaker 3: after the game. A gee, you're hugging that kind of thing,
- 24:47Speaker 3: but you're sharing dressing rooms, hotel rooms, bushies and everything
- 24:52Speaker 3: else where. These guys use used to your close. So
- 24:56Speaker 3: that's it. That's the thing that people don't understand. And
- 25:00Speaker 3: you know that kind of level of friendship and respect
- 25:04Speaker 3: that you've got for guys. That told me as well.
- 25:07Speaker 3: So he was a hard one to take. And then
- 25:09Speaker 3: I have those piles at Aberdeen as well, Neil Cooper
- 25:13Speaker 3: like me Google that I played of course, so it's
- 25:16Speaker 3: sad to see these guys because they were great players
- 25:18Speaker 3: and things like that, but they played Yeah, good guy, funny,
- 25:26Speaker 3: that's the thing. These were all funny guys as well,
- 25:28Speaker 3: great character characters. You know. The part of the probably
- 25:33Speaker 3: femin nearly was he was a riot I non stop.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I think it kind of mold you as well.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Last you've you've been through to probably the strongest changing rooms,
- 25:46Speaker 3: young boy, Aberdeen, with all those and it's it's good
- 25:53Speaker 3: to be that mentality, yeah, young boy, getting into that
- 25:58Speaker 3: standards and the standards that we're in the dress room
- 26:01Speaker 3: and you're up at the top end of the table,
- 26:04Speaker 3: you know, playing cup finals, challenging for the league every year,
- 26:08Speaker 3: every season, that's the best thing. Getting to a semifinal
- 26:13Speaker 3: was always, you know, great, but getting to the finals
- 26:19Speaker 3: even better. You haven't win it. So playing under two
- 26:23Speaker 3: good managers is experience up against each other he's got
- 26:28Speaker 3: so it was great for me, absolutely great. And then
- 26:31Speaker 3: I walk leave a great dress room guys all winners
- 26:35Speaker 3: leave Aberdeen, and then I walk into a Celtic dressing
- 26:38Speaker 3: room exact same. So you see, I think that's where
- 26:44Speaker 3: you get experience and your your knowledge as well. You know,
- 26:50Speaker 3: should you know how you played, you know how that
- 26:52Speaker 3: team played. But the modern day game, there's different managers,
- 26:56Speaker 3: were different philosophies.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Is you dipped your twenty management? Did you know?
- 27:04Speaker 3: I did? I I didn't find that brilliant. It was great,
- 27:07Speaker 3: it was great. I went to Clyde and I was
- 27:10Speaker 3: over in Australia to be fair, and I came back
- 27:14Speaker 3: and did my my badgies and moust I was here.
- 27:17Speaker 3: I got offered the job at Clyde, so.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I still be you in charge.
- 27:22Speaker 3: When I was there, myself and Graham Roberts were offered
- 27:30Speaker 3: the job at the same time, so I couldn't have
- 27:33Speaker 3: two managers. It was a strange set up anyway that
- 27:38Speaker 3: says I'd go. There was no players whisoever there. I
- 27:41Speaker 3: had to rebuild a whole club, even getting youths in,
- 27:46Speaker 3: no players with fever, nothing, So I tell trials. I
- 27:49Speaker 3: did something over a serious. I've had trials and we've
- 27:52Speaker 3: got to be two thousand boys through the door, just
- 27:55Speaker 3: having a look at them and bounce games. And then
- 27:58Speaker 3: I contacted all the p f a is it been
- 28:00Speaker 3: released and gave him a second chance, second opportunity. It
- 28:04Speaker 3: was all guys that I knew for the clubs and said,
- 28:07Speaker 3: displays a good gee, this is a good gene, he's
- 28:09Speaker 3: not bad, and put them all together and Tommy.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Harris and my pal to Tommy play.
- 28:17Speaker 3: It was great, brilliant was but they ended up selling
- 28:22Speaker 3: quite a few of them. And also the one the
- 28:24Speaker 3: cup never won the Cup. They go to the first
- 28:27Speaker 3: final and fifty years and we were second in the
- 28:32Speaker 3: league first division, hoping for promotion really used a few
- 28:37Speaker 3: years was a few years no, and then either was
- 28:42Speaker 3: I there was. I got interviewed for the mother Will joke,
- 28:46Speaker 3: and then things happen in the game hereafterwards your luck
- 28:53Speaker 3: turns and I think it offered jobs that living Stone
- 28:57Speaker 3: and then I go offered the job, but mother Will
- 28:59Speaker 3: you know, like we've done a as well, read Dundee
- 29:01Speaker 3: as well. Spoke to them and then I was down south.
- 29:06Speaker 3: But there was ones that wanted sure about taking it.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Was there for me, Yeah, I never bought it, and
- 29:12Speaker 3: I just drew a line in the sand and wanted
- 29:14Speaker 3: a break fit and then I never went back to it.
- 29:17Speaker 3: I mean a lot of people say issue and I
- 29:19Speaker 3: walked away and all that kind of thing, but I
- 29:20Speaker 3: just I was puffed out because I went straight face
- 29:22Speaker 3: football right and there was no break I mean, I was,
- 29:30Speaker 3: as I said, playing in the first team sixteen years
- 29:32Speaker 3: away right through I'm in my forties and I had
- 29:35Speaker 3: a break, so I was. I was just puffed out.
- 29:39Speaker 3: I knew I was, but I enjoyed the management. It
- 29:42Speaker 3: was great, great spirit, one of my boys, and yeah
- 29:45Speaker 3: I was. I actually just did things that I got
- 29:48Speaker 3: showing a fee.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Yeah you take the good and bad thay you used
- 29:53Speaker 2: the good.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Guy and I just went and I was a negative.
- 29:57Speaker 3: I never wanted to be a negative marriage and be defensive,
- 30:00Speaker 3: encourage the players to have beat players. I was a
- 30:02Speaker 3: player that wanted to take somebody on and I told
- 30:04Speaker 3: every single player go take the month. I wanted the
- 30:06Speaker 3: people in the stand to be excited and so long
- 30:10Speaker 3: as I was set up pretty rigid, that's how we
- 30:12Speaker 3: got great results. We beat Celtic obviously and also done
- 30:17Speaker 3: well go the first Cup final, and we also took
- 30:20Speaker 3: Rangers the extra time at Ibrok and they were gonna
- 30:23Speaker 3: they were they were going to manage to get an
- 30:25Speaker 3: equalizer and took it the extra time and then we
- 30:28Speaker 3: go beating extra time. Just the legs had gone for
- 30:31Speaker 3: the young boys. But just shows you they were the
- 30:35Speaker 3: positivity the youth and don't having any fear. Johnny taking
- 30:41Speaker 3: on Celtic and Rangers.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Well mate, you've been a fantastic guest.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Well I know you're dying to go and get a
- 30:47Speaker 3: beer and Bie Maguire one of us. Thanks again, you
- 30:51Speaker 3: very much
