- 0:43Speaker 1: on Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five.
- 0:50Speaker 3: All right, we get Leggy a day earlier than usual
- 0:53Speaker 3: to talk about a pretty crazy Monday night football game
- 0:56Speaker 3: featuring another Broncos win. But I gotta start here with
- 0:58Speaker 3: some breaking news from the Jeff and we know this
- 1:02Speaker 3: Goes is the next guy in line for a contract.
- 1:06Speaker 3: They typically get whatever amount more, right, So, the breaking
- 1:09Speaker 3: news is Steven A. Smith is closing in on a
- 1:11Speaker 3: six year, one hundred and twenty million dollar deal with ESPN.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Are you asking for one twenty five.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Well, and I leave that to my representatives. I really
- 1:20Speaker 4: don't get involved.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So Steve and Day's getting some of that Jeff Legwald money.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you know, I think that's what he's thinking
- 1:30Speaker 4: for sure.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah, uh, Jeff Lakewald.
- 1:33Speaker 4: I think I think everybody goes into their contract looking
- 1:35Speaker 4: for Leggies, clothing, allowers and other.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Per Jeff LAGWALDESPN dot com. By the way, that's a
- 1:43Speaker 3: real thing. By the way on the athletic I didn't
- 1:45Speaker 3: make that up. It's a real thing. But Leggy to
- 1:47Speaker 3: the game on Monday. You know what I think my
- 1:51Speaker 3: main takeaway was because I've been thinking this is a
- 1:54Speaker 3: good football team for a while. We looked up the
- 1:56Speaker 3: number since October. The Broncos are a top ten scoring
- 1:59Speaker 3: team in the NFL. Since October, they have thrown the
- 2:02Speaker 3: fourth most touchdown passes in the NFL. But good football
- 2:07Speaker 3: teams win ugly games. They bring their C game or
- 2:11Speaker 3: their B minus game, and they still find a way
- 2:13Speaker 3: to win. And I think that's what the Broncos did.
- 2:15Speaker 3: What most impressed you about Monday.
- 2:18Speaker 5: It just sort of survival.
- 2:20Speaker 4: I think even the best of teams, so we I
- 2:23Speaker 4: think we often after a team wins at all like,
- 2:27Speaker 4: you know, the twenty fifteen Broncos, we tend to look
- 2:29Speaker 4: back on it as, oh, that was one of the
- 2:32Speaker 4: greatest defenses the teams ever have, But you know, Pittsburgh
- 2:36Speaker 4: hung thirty four on those guys that year. I think
- 2:39Speaker 4: they gave up twenty seven twice that year and two
- 2:45Speaker 4: other games. So when you look back, you're like, oh,
- 2:47Speaker 4: the defense was dominant. But you're gonna have moments in
- 2:51Speaker 4: a season no matter how good you are where you
- 2:54Speaker 4: got to survive. And you know, the better teams survive
- 2:58Speaker 4: and the teams with flaws or too big a flaws
- 3:02Speaker 4: do not. And that, to me, the survival was a
- 3:05Speaker 4: big thing, and because you just think how crushing that
- 3:08Speaker 4: would have been for them if it ended thirty two
- 3:12Speaker 4: thirty one, you know, and that was it. So it
- 3:16Speaker 4: definitely was a survival mode game, and every team's gonna
- 3:19Speaker 4: have them. My favorite stat about the Broncos right now
- 3:23Speaker 4: is they've outscored the Chiefs and they've given up one
- 3:26Speaker 4: fewer point than the Chiefs, So just tells you how
- 3:30Speaker 4: nutty the NFL is.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And if you beat the Chiefs, if not for that
- 3:34Speaker 1: ridiculous finish, you have a chance in the season finale
- 3:38Speaker 1: to overtake the Chiefs. You really do you have a
- 3:40Speaker 1: chance to beat them in the division. But whatever, Hey,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I got to ask you this regarding the game plan
- 3:46Speaker 1: on Monday night. Why so few plays where PS two
- 3:52Speaker 1: headed up against Jerry Judy? Why did they just put
- 3:54Speaker 1: them on Jerry Judy and say enough with that?
- 3:57Speaker 4: You know, Veka, you don't really get a good anm
- 4:00Speaker 4: for those types of things, and.
- 4:02Speaker 5: Uh, right before a bye.
- 4:05Speaker 4: But I will say it was very striking to me
- 4:08Speaker 4: by and again it's my it's my chart, so just
- 4:11Speaker 4: take it for what you think. But uh, when I
- 4:14Speaker 4: charted the games, the two fewest games this year are
- 4:17Speaker 4: the two games where Sir Tan was matched the least
- 4:22Speaker 4: was Baltimore and Monday.
- 4:24Speaker 5: So you tell me.
- 4:26Speaker 4: What the impact of that is on their defense when
- 4:30Speaker 4: they don't simply slap pats Er Tan on the team's
- 4:33Speaker 4: other best receiver. You know, the issue of your defensive
- 4:36Speaker 4: coordinator is you are tipping your hand at the snap.
- 4:39Speaker 4: You are you are giving up sort of some of
- 4:42Speaker 4: the disguise in your coverages. And I will tell you
- 4:47Speaker 4: in today's NFL with the ball coming out so fast, Uh,
- 4:52Speaker 4: defensive coordinators covet the disguise almost as much as a
- 4:56Speaker 4: good pass rusher. So but when you match, you are
- 5:00Speaker 4: giving that up. But to me, they're so much better
- 5:03Speaker 4: when they do it. I mean, just look at the snaps.
- 5:05Speaker 4: When Sir Tan was on Judy, nothing happened, And at
- 5:11Speaker 4: one point I even saw Judy shut a route down
- 5:14Speaker 4: because he knew it wasn't going anywhere when Sir Tan
- 5:17Speaker 4: was across from him.
- 5:19Speaker 2: But Jeff, it feels to me a little bit like
- 5:21Speaker 2: you're kind of damned if you do and you're damned
- 5:23Speaker 2: if you don't. Either the other side gets completely picked on,
- 5:27Speaker 2: or like you said, you tip your hand and a
- 5:30Speaker 2: good offensive coordinator will try to exploit that. Right. It's
- 5:34Speaker 2: just Vic made a good point, he said, you know,
- 5:35Speaker 2: you lose Riley Mass, and it seems like that secondary
- 5:39Speaker 2: unravels a little bit like you pull the thread on
- 5:41Speaker 2: a on a suit kill right, and it starts to
- 5:43Speaker 2: unravel or whatever the case may be. How do you
- 5:45Speaker 2: how do you fix that? Or you just hang your life?
- 5:48Speaker 5: Well, okay, I'm the case.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Gave you gave me four of them, so I gave
- 5:53Speaker 2: you my cheap ones.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Oh my god, Now, yeah, I think I think there's
- 6:00Speaker 4: a good chance a conversation will be had if if
- 6:04Speaker 4: the rookie will play, they put him in at the
- 6:06Speaker 4: end of the game. Chris abrams Strain was in for
- 6:09Speaker 4: the last two series at least against the Browns. So
- 6:14Speaker 4: I think that will be a conversation when they get
- 6:16Speaker 4: back on Monday, you know, or they probably had it
- 6:20Speaker 4: as well coming out of the game when they did
- 6:22Speaker 4: their debrief, But when they get back in the building
- 6:26Speaker 4: everybody on Monday, I would guess there will be a
- 6:30Speaker 4: very earnest conversation. Should Should they just do what they've
- 6:34Speaker 4: done with some of the other rookies and get them
- 6:37Speaker 4: in there because he he has performed well in practice,
- 6:40Speaker 4: And I think if I've said I think if camp
- 6:43Speaker 4: had been like old school camp a little longer, I
- 6:46Speaker 4: think he would have had a much better chance of
- 6:48Speaker 4: being the guy in the dime when when the season started.
- 6:52Speaker 3: H Yeah, you can't play Levi anymore. You can't do it.
- 6:55Speaker 3: So Jeff, I got this. I know you're a baseball guy.
- 6:58Speaker 3: We were talking about this golden at bat thing that
- 7:00Speaker 3: they're discussing. I have I have a proposal that I
- 7:04Speaker 3: want to give to you, and you can pass that
- 7:06Speaker 3: along to the higher ups in the NFL. I want
- 7:08Speaker 3: a golden week in which Jamis Winston plays all time
- 7:12Speaker 3: quarterback for every team in the league. I want him
- 7:14Speaker 3: for every team because that experience of watching him play
- 7:17Speaker 3: football is the most chaotic, insane thing you could ask for.
- 7:22Speaker 4: You know, you and in my career you've seen guys
- 7:25Speaker 4: like that. They're so epically gifted, and sometimes we forget
- 7:31Speaker 4: because of the mistakes or whatever, or their teams don't win.
- 7:35Speaker 5: But he is a.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Gifted, gifted football player. It's just stuff happens to him.
- 7:42Speaker 4: He puts you know, twenty passes are great, but the
- 7:46Speaker 4: one that isn't isn't just a bounce, bounced ball.
- 7:51Speaker 5: To the receiver. It's two pick sixes. I mean, it's
- 7:54Speaker 5: just almost three.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I don't know how you coach him because everybody I
- 7:59Speaker 4: know in the league says he's the best person, the
- 8:04Speaker 4: works the hardest. You know, he's everything you want in
- 8:07Speaker 4: a football player except mistake free. And it's just I
- 8:12Speaker 4: bet coaching him is is an experience like no other.
- 8:15Speaker 4: I mean, he's he's the only thirty thirty guy ever,
- 8:19Speaker 4: you know, so you you you know that's that's hard
- 8:22Speaker 4: to do. Uh, but it's just it really is amazing
- 8:27Speaker 4: to see a guy throw for almost five hundred.
- 8:31Speaker 5: And lose because of his errors.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Really, in his quote after the game, maybe the greatest
- 8:37Speaker 4: of all time.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Good deliver me from the pick sixes.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I mean, and it was sincere.
- 8:44Speaker 2: It wasn't just it.
- 8:46Speaker 5: He meant every word of it. He meant every word
- 8:48Speaker 5: of it. It was spectacular.
- 8:50Speaker 4: But I can't tell you everybody I know in the
- 8:53Speaker 4: NFL who has coached him or played with alongside him
- 8:57Speaker 4: just says he's the best guy and it so sometimes
- 9:01Speaker 4: I bet it's hard for people to watch those things happen.
- 9:04Speaker 3: To follow up on that, that throw to Mims is
- 9:07Speaker 3: a throw that's not made in week three, it's not
- 9:08Speaker 3: made in week four. But with the development of bon Nicks,
- 9:11Speaker 3: he feels confident enough to make that throw. Did you
- 9:13Speaker 3: think he had that kind of throw in him, threading
- 9:15Speaker 3: it between two guys bearing down on one receiver fifty
- 9:18Speaker 3: yards downfield.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Well, I'd really, really really like to know if he
- 9:23Speaker 4: saw the second guy when he threw it.
- 9:25Speaker 5: That's would be my look.
- 9:28Speaker 3: It the guy over his shoulder, over MIM's shoulder.
- 9:31Speaker 4: Yeah, when I looked at the end zone view I
- 9:34Speaker 4: think that would have been tough to see from his
- 9:36Speaker 4: perspective in the pot.
- 9:37Speaker 5: But it doesn't matter.
- 9:38Speaker 4: I mean, I think a few weeks ago the throat
- 9:40Speaker 4: of Alay down the hash is the one that sort
- 9:44Speaker 4: of set him free a little bit.
- 9:45Speaker 5: That you know. I know, I.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Talked about the rectangle they were playing offense in early
- 9:52Speaker 4: in the season. They're making it a little bigger now
- 9:54Speaker 4: he's getting more confident in the middle of the field.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Now we'll say next year, after summer of defensive coordinators
- 10:02Speaker 4: disassembling him, you know they're gonna challenge him outside the
- 10:06Speaker 4: numbers more. That's that's still the feeling among defensive coaches.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Can you beat me there over and over again outside
- 10:13Speaker 4: the numbers? But that doesn't matter right now really. But
- 10:18Speaker 4: when you know, again, I've said it, and people have
- 10:20Speaker 4: been giving me crap all year. When his footwork is right,
- 10:24Speaker 4: look at his quarterback play, and when it isn't, look
- 10:27Speaker 4: what happens to the offense. And early in that game
- 10:31Speaker 4: his footwork wasn't right, then they had a three and out,
- 10:34Speaker 4: a nineteen second possession, a forty second possession. When his
- 10:39Speaker 4: footwork is right, they run the offense well. He makes
- 10:43Speaker 4: throws that show progress, and when it isn't, he's you know,
- 10:49Speaker 4: he wasn't even fifty percent for a while in the game,
- 10:52Speaker 4: and that's that's what happens. He's but it's a young quarterback.
- 10:56Speaker 4: You know, you can't you can't get everything. You know
- 10:59Speaker 4: that all the boxes checked on every play when you're
- 11:02Speaker 4: in your rookie year and things are just swarming around.
- 11:05Speaker 4: And the last two defenses have been a lot more
- 11:08Speaker 4: aggressive against him than previously. The Raiders came after him
- 11:12Speaker 4: and the Browns came after him too, and I think
- 11:15Speaker 4: that's something to watch moving forward here.
- 11:17Speaker 5: I know that.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Cash registers, the old type that they don't exist anymore,
- 11:22Speaker 1: but what kind of cash register is Nick Benito carrying
- 11:25Speaker 1: with him right now?
- 11:26Speaker 5: Because every time he makes.
- 11:27Speaker 1: A play, Oh my god, ching is what I hear.
- 11:31Speaker 4: You can almost hear the numbers just clicking by, like
- 11:35Speaker 4: you know the old school gas pump sting ding ding ding. Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I mean it's he's getting paid. And the question is
- 11:42Speaker 4: are the Broncos gonna do it or not?
- 11:45Speaker 2: Of course they gotta do How can you not?
- 11:49Speaker 4: Well again, you know, their cap situation isn't awesome, but
- 11:53Speaker 4: you know they'll have to do what they've got to do.
- 11:55Speaker 4: But he you know, you're gonna have to do what
- 11:57Speaker 4: you did with certain almost not to that extent, but
- 12:00Speaker 4: you're gonna have to pay him near the top of
- 12:02Speaker 4: the market because if he hits the market, that's what
- 12:05Speaker 4: he's getting. Because you know, his numbers aren't just good,
- 12:11Speaker 4: his advanced metrics, the stuff GMS used to pay guys.
- 12:16Speaker 4: His metrics are epic. Last year, he was one of
- 12:19Speaker 4: the best pass rushers in the NFL, but he didn't
- 12:23Speaker 4: have the sacks. So everybody in the public I was like,
- 12:27Speaker 4: you know, whatever, Benito had an OK year.
- 12:29Speaker 5: GMS thought he had a great year last year.
- 12:32Speaker 4: So he's now put those kinds of years back to
- 12:36Speaker 4: back and that's what gets you paid.
- 12:38Speaker 1: You know what's crazy leging. I don't like comparing players
- 12:41Speaker 1: to generational types like Von Miller, greatest pass rusher in
- 12:44Speaker 1: Bronco's history. Nick Benito's the closest thing they've had since Von.
- 12:48Speaker 1: But if there's one thing Nick Benito does better than Von,
- 12:52Speaker 1: he can cover better than Von. Remember when they would
- 12:54Speaker 1: throw Vaughn out on a receiver and you'd be like,
- 12:56Speaker 1: oh jeez, oh my god, but on a dude like
- 13:02Speaker 1: legit fast.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Oh no, he not only did he line up in
- 13:06Speaker 4: the slot, he dropped off into his own perfect depth.
- 13:09Speaker 4: He had perfect depth, which is something even line experienced
- 13:13Speaker 4: linebackers have a hard time doing.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Uh.
- 13:16Speaker 4: And he came off his guy to make the pick.
- 13:19Speaker 4: That's the best thing of all about the play. It
- 13:21Speaker 4: was like a corner. But you know, Von, that's one
- 13:26Speaker 4: of the greatest. His rookie year, Richard Smith pulled him
- 13:28Speaker 4: out of a game on third downs because he was
- 13:31Speaker 4: making so many mistakes and coverage.
- 13:33Speaker 2: So you're right, Jeff, last thing, Uh, how do I
- 13:38Speaker 2: stop my hands were chapped from ringing? How do I
- 13:41Speaker 2: stop my hands from ringing? About Mike Shanahan being put
- 13:45Speaker 2: to the side for Mike Hongren. Listen, I don't want
- 13:48Speaker 2: to take anyth away from Mike Holmgan. Their careers are
- 13:51Speaker 2: very similar, from the same coaching tree, the whole nine yards.
- 13:54Speaker 2: But but Shanny beat him in the Super Bowl, and
- 13:57Speaker 2: Mike Shanahan should be in I don't. I don't know
- 14:00Speaker 2: what to do with this information that's pissing me off.
- 14:03Speaker 4: Well, I can tell you what happened in my view,
- 14:06Speaker 4: I mean, I can't explain it or tell you it's right.
- 14:09Speaker 4: But the Andy Reid effect is helping Mike Holmgren. You know,
- 14:14Speaker 4: Andy Reid is on Mike Holmgren's coaching tree. He's you know,
- 14:19Speaker 4: he's the best guy going, the biggest winner right now
- 14:21Speaker 4: with Belichick not in the league, So that that has
- 14:24Speaker 4: an impact on some of the selectors, I suppose, But
- 14:28Speaker 4: I mean, Mike's a bet in my opinion, Mike's a
- 14:30Speaker 4: better candidate overall. Mike should have been in the Hall
- 14:33Speaker 4: of Fame before. I think he will go in, But
- 14:38Speaker 4: I mean it's the Hall of Fame never comes at
- 14:40Speaker 4: the pace anybody likes. And this is another example.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Part of that tree, the Mike tree, and hopefully Kyle
- 14:49Speaker 2: you know, I mean is.
- 14:51Speaker 4: One of the I'm not sure any other coach had
- 14:55Speaker 4: three first generations assistants take teams to the Super Bowl
- 15:00Speaker 4: and two of them won it. So yeah, uh, and
- 15:03Speaker 4: half the league is running Mike's offense or some version
- 15:06Speaker 4: of it right now. So his footprint on football is
- 15:10Speaker 4: bigger than anybody else on the list.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Uh.
- 15:13Speaker 4: And that's that's even beyond his own resume, you know,
- 15:17Speaker 4: of winning, which is better than you know, in my opinion,
- 15:21Speaker 4: anybody on the list.
- 15:22Speaker 5: But I am just one guy in a big room.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Just just quickly here, Leggy, before I let you go. Uh,
- 15:28Speaker 3: the the release of Josh Reynolds? Does that have And
- 15:32Speaker 3: I know it's been just a bizarre year for him.
- 15:34Speaker 3: He's on IR and then he gets shot and then
- 15:36Speaker 3: a whole bit we all know the story behind that.
- 15:38Speaker 3: But is that more about Josh Reynolds, isn't who they
- 15:41Speaker 3: thought he was? Or is this more about guys like
- 15:43Speaker 3: Devon Vele and Troy Franklin Marvin Mims have stepped up
- 15:46Speaker 3: to where you don't need him.
- 15:48Speaker 4: Probably the ladder, I mean it's probably you know, the
- 15:52Speaker 4: statue were given before since October. I think they just
- 15:55Speaker 4: don't want to mess with anything right now. Yeah, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 4: you've got a rookie quarter who's finding a comfort level.
- 16:02Speaker 4: You don't want to do anything that's gonna mess with that.
- 16:06Speaker 4: If you're the Broncos coaches. It's hard enough for bo
- 16:09Speaker 4: Nicks just to get through a week, you know, and
- 16:12Speaker 4: have everything organized and the way they want it. So
- 16:16Speaker 4: I really don't think they want to mess with too
- 16:18Speaker 4: much because he is his comfort level with Sutton, you know,
- 16:22Speaker 4: is off the charts, and they're starting to get Mims
- 16:24Speaker 4: involved finally, So I think that it's it's really about
- 16:30Speaker 4: don't mess with the chemistry you have at the moment.
- 16:33Speaker 4: And I would guess if he clears, or at least
- 16:36Speaker 4: as of yesterday, they were thinking about it, if he clears,
- 16:38Speaker 4: bringing them back in some fashion.
- 16:40Speaker 5: But we'll see what they decide. But he got four.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Point two million guaranteed for twelve catches, so that's pretty good.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yeah, not bad, Jeff lakewellt ESPN dot com. I can't
- 16:51Speaker 3: wait for your six year, one hundred and twenty two
- 16:53Speaker 3: million dollar extension just to one up Steven A.
- 16:56Speaker 5: I'm gonna need a few more years to hit that total.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I am now reading some of these salaries that are
- 17:02Speaker 1: made at ESPN eight min eighteen million, Joe Buck fifteen
- 17:06Speaker 1: million unknown with Peyton Manning gets paid because Omaha Productions
- 17:10Speaker 1: is probably even.
- 17:11Speaker 5: More than that.
- 17:12Speaker 1: And I'm saying to myself, you are so underpaid, Jeff Legwald.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I mean for the fact that you don't have your
- 17:20Speaker 1: own clothing deal. Yeah, says enough ridiculous.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Well you know that I'm looking for that police sponsor.
- 17:27Speaker 3: So you know, leg you hear the best stations of
- 17:31Speaker 3: the time, see your palace take care All conversations leg
