- 0:07Speaker 1: fellow travelers, including a prominent American industrialist. Before long, the
- 0:13Speaker 1: aircraft's course and a passenger's cargo bring wartime security and
- 0:18Speaker 1: international espionage into the cabin. From CBS on May 4, 1943,
- 0:22Speaker 1: comes Suspense, Episode 4, Death Flies Blind. Richard Dix and
- 0:30Speaker 1: Gail Page star with Joseph Kearns as the man in black.
- 0:35Speaker 1: The script is by mystery novelist John Dixon Carr, produced

- 0:40Speaker 2: By Ted Bliss.
- 0:42Speaker 1: And now, the original broadcast.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Suspense.
- 1:10Speaker 4: This is the Man in Black, here again to introduce
- 1:13Speaker 4: Columbia's program, Suspense. Heading our starring Hollywood cast this evening
- 1:19Speaker 4: is Mr. Richard Dix, who appears as a United States
- 1:22Speaker 4: Naval officer. who found himself in a remarkable predicament on
- 1:26Speaker 4: what should have been an uneventful flight from New York
- 1:29Speaker 4: to Philadelphia. As fellow passengers aboard the airliner, our Miss
- 1:34Speaker 4: Gail Page is a girl named Monica, and Mr. Montague Love,
- 1:38Speaker 4: who plays that aged and domineering millionaire Silas Naylor. A
- 1:43Speaker 4: story by John Dixon Carr called Death Flies Blind is
- 1:48Speaker 4: tonight's tale of suspense. If you have been with us
- 1:51Speaker 4: on these Tuesday nights, You will know that suspense is
- 1:54Speaker 4: compounded of mystery and suspicion, dangerous adventure. In this series,
- 2:00Speaker 4: our tales calculate it to intrigue you, to stir your nerves,
- 2:05Speaker 4: to offer you a precarious situation, and then withhold the
- 2:08Speaker 4: solution until the last possible moment. And so it is
- 2:12Speaker 4: with Death Flies Blind and the performances of Richard Dix,
- 2:15Speaker 4: Gail Page, Montague Love, and our other players, we again
- 2:19Speaker 4: hope to keep you in.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Suspense.
- 2:30Speaker 4: The Guardia Field Municipal Airport of New York. The Guardia Field,
- 2:34Speaker 4: vast behind its white buildings, on a gray spring afternoon
- 2:37Speaker 4: when rain splashes across the runways, dims the sky, and
- 2:41Speaker 4: spatters on the wings of a great silver-painted airliner waiting beyond.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Already as the limousine bus from the New York Terminus
- 2:48Speaker 4: slowly draws up to the waiting shed, you can hear
- 2:51Speaker 4: the loud speaker. The big limousine bus besides its driver
- 2:57Speaker 4: contains only two persons. One is a tall young man
- 3:00Speaker 4: in United States Naval uniform. Stripes of a lieutenant commander
- 3:03Speaker 4: around his sleeve. The other is a tall and dark-haired girl.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Her face a.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Little frightened in the blue.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Flight 72. New York to Los Angeles. Plane ready to
- 3:13Speaker 5: take off at gate number six. Have your tickets ready, please.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Fred, that can't mean us.
- 3:20Speaker 7: Now, take it easy, Monica. We're not too late.
- 3:23Speaker 2: They won't go without us.
- 3:24Speaker 6: No, I mean it says New York to Los Angeles.
- 3:26Speaker 2: That's right, Monica.
- 3:27Speaker 6: We're only going to Philadelphia.
- 3:29Speaker 7: You're still right, my dear. I've arranged for a special
- 3:31Speaker 7: stop at Philadelphia. It won't take long, and then they
- 3:34Speaker 7: go on nonstop from there.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Fred, that's just it. Who's going on from there?
- 3:38Speaker 7: Oh, you'd be surprised.
- 3:40Speaker 8: The airport bus must hold 20 people, but there's nobody
- 3:43Speaker 8: in it except ourselves and the driver.
- 3:45Speaker 6: Who's going on to Los Angeles or anywhere else?
- 3:47Speaker 7: I was going to tell you about that, Monica.
- 3:50Speaker 3: All right, miss.
- 3:51Speaker 2: All right, sir. Hop under that shed and out the
- 3:53Speaker 2: door on the other side. Oh, got your tickets ready?
- 3:56Speaker 7: Yes, I've got them.
- 3:57Speaker 2: All set, Monica?
- 3:58Speaker 6: The rain is certainly coming down. Do they take off
- 4:01Speaker 6: when it rains like this?
- 4:02Speaker 7: Oh, Miss, a little rain don't bother them.
- 4:04Speaker 2: What does bother them is unsettled weather at other places.
- 4:07Speaker 6: You mean it's perfectly safe?
- 4:08Speaker 2: They never take off, Miss, unless it is safe.
- 4:11Speaker 3: You better hurry up now.
- 4:19Speaker 7: There's the plane, Monica. Shall we run for it?
- 4:22Speaker 6: I'd rather not run, if you don't mind.
- 4:24Speaker 7: Aren't getting nervous, are you?
- 4:27Speaker 6: I know it's stupid of me. I've flown before.
- 4:29Speaker 9: It's just.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Well, those few seconds before the takeoff. You're moving and
- 4:34Speaker 6: the motors have been idling.
- 4:36Speaker 8: All of a sudden, they start to roar. The plane races.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Ahead and the roar gets louder and suddenly you think,
- 4:41Speaker 6: am I ever going to get down alive?
- 4:42Speaker 7: Now look here, my dear.
- 4:45Speaker 6: Oh, I'm sorry, Fed.
- 4:46Speaker 2: There's nothing to worry about, you know.
- 4:49Speaker 6: Of course not. I'll be good. It's just this dismal
- 4:52Speaker 6: day and a ghostly bus without any passengers.
- 4:54Speaker 9: Fed, look.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Where?
- 4:59Speaker 6: At the planes. They've got all the windows covered inside
- 5:02Speaker 6: with little gray curtains.
- 5:03Speaker 7: Oh, that's all right, Monica. It's only a wartime measure.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Wartime measure?
- 5:06Speaker 7: Yes. Just keep those curtains closed for some minutes after
- 5:09Speaker 7: taking off and before landing. So no one can make
- 5:12Speaker 7: maps or take pictures of our airports.
- 5:17Speaker 6: Anything could happen up there, come on.
- 5:19Speaker 7: No. And what's more, if you're worried about your fellow passengers,
- 5:22Speaker 7: look over your shoulder.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Well, there are some people coming through the gate.
- 5:25Speaker 7: Yes, you see the little gray-haired man with the.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Big fell on each side of him?
- 5:29Speaker 7: The secretary dashing around them like a destroyer in a convoy.
- 5:32Speaker 6: You know, I've seen that gray-haired man somewhere before.
- 5:35Speaker 7: You've seen his picture? That's Silas Naylor. The third richest
- 5:40Speaker 7: man in the world. Those two big fellas are his bodyguards.
- 5:44Speaker 6: Does he need a bodyguard?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Well, I.
- 5:47Speaker 7: Not more than most of us, I imagine.
- 5:50Speaker 6: I don't like that.
- 5:51Speaker 7: Nonsense, my dear. Come on now, up the steps to
- 5:53Speaker 7: the plane. Give your name to the air hostess at
- 5:55Speaker 7: the door.
- 5:56Speaker 2: That's it.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Good afternoon, miss. May I have your name, please? I'm
- 6:01Speaker 6: Monica Vale. You're the air hostess? That's right, Miss Vale.
- 6:04Speaker 6: Take any seat you like. And you, sir?
- 6:07Speaker 7: Onslow, Lieutenant Commander Fred Onslow.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Oh, yes, Commander. We've had instructions about you. Happy to
- 6:12Speaker 6: have you with us, even if it's only as far
- 6:14Speaker 6: as Philadelphia.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 6:15Speaker 6: May I take your overcoat or your briefcase?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Only the overcoat, please. I'll keep the briefcase.
- 6:19Speaker 6: Friend, look there.
- 6:22Speaker 7: What is it now?
- 6:23Speaker 6: That man you called Mr.
- 6:24Speaker 8: Naylor's secretary. Light-haired man, rather good-looking. He's sprinting towards his
- 6:28Speaker 8: plane as fast as he can run.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Well, he better be careful on.
- 6:30Speaker 2: That slippery surface.
- 6:32Speaker 6: He certainly has.
- 6:33Speaker 7: Look out, man.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Look out, man. Watch your step. Are you all right?
- 6:42Speaker 7: Here, let me help you up. I'm all right, thanks.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Perfectly all right.
- 6:46Speaker 7: Air hostess.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 6:47Speaker 10: My name is Michael Shepard.
- 6:49Speaker 7: I'm Mr.
- 6:49Speaker 10: Naylor's secretary, and I think there must be some mistake here.
- 6:52Speaker 6: Mistake, sir?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:53Speaker 7: When Mr.
- 6:54Speaker 10: Naylor travels, he's in the habit of booking every seat
- 6:56Speaker 10: in the plane to ensure privacy. Yet we seem to
- 6:59Speaker 10: have two extra passengers.
- 7:00Speaker 7: Well, I'm afraid that's my fault, Mr.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Shepard. Indeed, sir.
- 7:03Speaker 10: Then would you and the young lady be good enough
- 7:04Speaker 10: to take some later planes?
- 7:06Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 7:06Speaker 7: I'm afraid I can't do that. No, and why not?
- 7:09Speaker 6: Maybe I ought to explain, Mr.
- 7:10Speaker 8: Shepard, that Commander Onslow had last-minute orders to join his ship.
- 7:14Speaker 6: He and Miss Vale have priority as far as Philadelphia.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Philadelphia?
- 7:18Speaker 10: Must we stop there?
- 7:19Speaker 6: Only for a few minutes, Mr. Shepard.
- 7:21Speaker 7: This is outrageous.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Mr.
- 7:22Speaker 10: Naylor is traveling, in a sense, on government business.
- 7:25Speaker 7: Well, so am I, old man. The Navy often does.
- 7:28Speaker 10: That doesn't alter the principle of the thing. I don't
- 7:31Speaker 10: want to seem ungracious, you understand.
- 7:33Speaker 9: Mr.
- 7:33Speaker 10: Naylor is always glad to help our brave soldiers and sailors.
- 7:37Speaker 7: Oh, for the love of my... Now, choir will now
- 7:40Speaker 7: sing hymn number 242. But this time you've gone too far.
- 7:44Speaker 7: I shall appeal to Mr. Naylor himself.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Mr.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Naylor, Mr. Naylor.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yes, Mr. Shepard, I can hear you. What is it?
- 7:50Speaker 10: This naval officer, sir, and the young lady.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Oh, I know, Shepard, I know. Isn't the plane big
- 7:55Speaker 3: enough for all of us?
- 7:56Speaker 7: I was only following your orders, Mr.
- 7:58Speaker 9: Naylor.
- 7:58Speaker 2: You asked for privacy. All right, Shepard.
- 8:01Speaker 3: What I'm asking for now is less noise. The lieutenant
- 8:03Speaker 3: commander in the Navy, eh?
- 8:05Speaker 2: That's right, Mr.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Naylor.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Off on another fishing trip, I suppose.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That's just exactly right, sir. Ever have dyspepsia? No, never. Well,
- 8:13Speaker 2: I have.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Twenty thousand a year I pay doctors. And what do
- 8:17Speaker 3: they give me?
- 8:18Speaker 5: The stump.
- 8:20Speaker 3: I'm not surprised you got priority, Commander. But I am
- 8:23Speaker 3: a little surprised about the girl.
- 8:25Speaker 2: She's my fiancée.
- 8:25Speaker 8: Mr.
- 8:26Speaker 7: Naylor?
- 8:27Speaker 2: Miss Vale.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Meet the rest of my family. These two bruisers here,
- 8:31Speaker 3: including the one with the mouth organ, are my bodyguard.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Mr.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Cohen... I'm pleased to meet you, Commander.
- 8:37Speaker 7: How do you do?
- 8:38Speaker 2: This is Mr. O'Reilly.
- 8:39Speaker 7: Glad to know you, Commander.
- 8:40Speaker 2: How is things going?
- 8:42Speaker 11: Hey, Cone, don't you ever get tired of playing that
- 8:44Speaker 11: mouth organ?
- 8:45Speaker 7: Stand away from the door.
- 8:46Speaker 2: They want to close it.
- 8:50Speaker 6: Will everyone please take your seats and fasten the seatbelts?
- 8:53Speaker 6: Are we ready to take off? Yes, in just a moment.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Shepard.
- 8:57Speaker 2: O'Reilly.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Owen.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Come along to the front of the plane.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 9:01Speaker 6: We'll sit in the back here, won't we, Fred?
- 9:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:05Speaker 7: Yes, of course. I.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Fred, is anything wrong?
- 9:08Speaker 5: No.
- 9:09Speaker 2: No, of course not. Why, what could be wrong?
- 9:12Speaker 6: Then you'd better sit down. We're starting to move. That's
- 9:14Speaker 6: good advice, Commander Onslow.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But I must ask you, Miss Vale, not to touch the.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Curtain on the window.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Oh.
- 9:20Speaker 6: How soon before we can open the curtain? As soon
- 9:22Speaker 6: as we're well away from New York. You see that
- 9:24Speaker 6: illuminated sign, no smoking, fasten seatbelts?
- 9:27Speaker 11: Yes.
- 9:28Speaker 5: What about it?
- 9:29Speaker 6: When the lights and the sign go out, you can
- 9:31Speaker 6: open the curtains. And smoke as much.
- 9:32Speaker 11: As you like.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Now, if you'll excuse me.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Certainly.
- 9:37Speaker 6: You needn't try to fool me, Fred Onslow.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I saw it. You saw what?
- 9:42Speaker 6: I saw you pick up that scrap of paper one
- 9:43Speaker 6: of those men dropped.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Why, that wasn't anything, Monica.
- 9:47Speaker 6: May I see the paper?
- 9:48Speaker 5: No.
- 9:49Speaker 9: Why not?
- 9:50Speaker 2: Well, because I'd rather you didn't see it, that's all.
- 9:53Speaker 2: There is something wrong, isn't there?
- 9:55Speaker 7: Look, Monica, let me repeat over and over.
- 9:57Speaker 2: What could be wrong?
- 9:58Speaker 7: If there's Silas Naylor, an internationally famous figure, with a
- 10:02Speaker 7: group of trusted attendants, here's an ACA plane as safe
- 10:05Speaker 7: and dependable as the old gray mare.
- 10:08Speaker 2: All the same, I.
- 10:09Speaker 6: All the same what?
- 10:10Speaker 7: I wish I hadn't brought you along. I wish there
- 10:13Speaker 7: was some kind of an emergency cord, like a train.
- 10:15Speaker 12: 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes.
- 10:34Speaker 4: The great silver plane throbbed against dead quiet. It was
- 10:37Speaker 4: warm and stuffy in the cabin despite the hissing ventilator.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Dim white reading lamps shined down on a double row
- 10:42Speaker 4: of cushioned chairs along one side and a single row
- 10:45Speaker 4: of cushioned chairs along the other. Ahead above the closed
- 10:48Speaker 4: door to the pilot's control cabin, the red glowing sign
- 10:51Speaker 4: still warned against opening those curtains. Aft in the plane
- 10:55Speaker 4: sits Commander Onslow, his eyes fixed on the clock under
- 10:58Speaker 4: that illuminated sign. Monica.
- 11:06Speaker 9: Yes?
- 11:07Speaker 4: What?
- 11:07Speaker 2: It's not exactly all right.
- 11:10Speaker 6: Fred, why do you say that?
- 11:12Speaker 7: Because we should have been in Philadelphia five minutes ago.
- 11:15Speaker 7: At least we should have been circling over the field.
- 11:17Speaker 6: And we're not?
- 11:18Speaker 2: No.
- 11:20Speaker 7: We're still 10 or 12,000 feet up if the pressure
- 11:22Speaker 7: on my eardrums count for anything.
- 11:24Speaker 2: And traveling like a bat out of Hades.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Weather's delaying us, I guess, huh?
- 11:29Speaker 2: Maybe it is.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Awfully bumpy, isn't it?
- 11:31Speaker 11: Yes, a little.
- 11:32Speaker 6: Makes you gasp for breath and your stomach's... That was
- 11:37Speaker 6: a bad one.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Not getting airsick, are you?
- 11:40Speaker 6: I don't think so. Wish I had some of that
- 11:43Speaker 6: chewing gum they give you.
- 11:44Speaker 7: Ring for the air hostess. She'll bring you some.
- 11:47Speaker 6: I did ring the bell, Fred, and there's no answer.
- 11:49Speaker 7: Oh, she's busy in.
- 11:50Speaker 2: The pantry back there, that's all. She didn't hear you.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Here, I'll get you some gum.
- 11:53Speaker 9: No, no, wait.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I'll go. Sure you're all right?
- 11:57Speaker 6: I want to powder my nose anyway. Besides, you're going
- 12:00Speaker 6: to have company. Our Mr. Shepard is weaving along this
- 12:03Speaker 6: aisle as though he didn't like air pockets either.
- 12:05Speaker 7: Well, thank the Lord, one of that party's awake up there.
- 12:08Speaker 2: I thought they were all dead. Don't say that. Say what?
- 12:11Speaker 11: Dead.
- 12:12Speaker 6: A spooky plane with everything so quiet and dead itself.
- 12:17Speaker 8: Remember how the pilot walked through a while ago and
- 12:18Speaker 8: looked around and walked right back to the control cabin again?
- 12:21Speaker 2: No, I didn't notice him.
- 12:22Speaker 6: Oh, that's what I mean. It was like a ghost.
- 12:27Speaker 6: I'll be right back.
- 12:29Speaker 7: Say, Commander Onslow. Yes, Mr.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Shepard?
- 12:32Speaker 7: Mind if I sit down? Not at all.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 12:36Speaker 10: Fact is, Commander, I want to apologize.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Oh, that's all right. Forget it.
- 12:39Speaker 10: I'm not such an ill-mannered guy, as I must have sounded.
- 12:43Speaker 10: It's no joke, you know, taking care of the chief.
- 12:46Speaker 10: I've got to go ahead like a cyclone so that
- 12:49Speaker 10: everything will be quiet when he gets there. And it's
- 12:52Speaker 10: a great responsibility, too.
- 12:53Speaker 7: I can imagine. I go on these long trips.
- 12:57Speaker 10: There's the chief half asleep and O'Reilly reading detective magazines
- 13:02Speaker 10: and Cohen with his mouth organ.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Doesn't that mouth organ bother the old boy?
- 13:05Speaker 10: No, he likes it. Especially when Cohen plays the old
- 13:09Speaker 10: square dancers. Chief's a great.
- 13:12Speaker 7: Man in his way. I was just wondering about that.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Wondering what? Is it true... Stop me if I'm talking
- 13:19Speaker 2: out of turn.
- 13:20Speaker 7: Go ahead.
- 13:20Speaker 10: We can trust the Navy.
- 13:22Speaker 7: Is it true he's offered to design and build, at
- 13:24Speaker 7: his own expense, a fleet of underwater cargo boats.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Submersible freighters, up to 5,000 or.
- 13:30Speaker 7: 6,000 tons, that'll do away with the submarine menace altogether?
- 13:34Speaker 10: Where did you hear that?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Oh, just a rumor. Is it true?
- 13:40Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:40Speaker 7: It's true enough.
- 13:42Speaker 2: You see, Mr.
- 13:43Speaker 7: Shepard, I'm one of the few people who believe that
- 13:45Speaker 7: that plan is practical. There must be a lot of
- 13:48Speaker 7: people who would like to see Mr.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Naylor put out of the way.
- 13:51Speaker 7: There are, Commander.
- 13:53Speaker 10: Only they can't get at him.
- 13:55Speaker 2: You're quite sure of that?
- 13:56Speaker 11: Dead sure.
- 13:58Speaker 10: Hitler himself isn't better guarded. Why, you could no more
- 14:02Speaker 10: shoot or stab or poison the chief than you could.
- 14:07Speaker 2: What was that? What happened?
- 14:08Speaker 4: Monica! Monica!
- 14:09Speaker 2: Is anything wrong back there?
- 14:11Speaker 7: It's all right, sir. It's only a noise in the pantry.
- 14:13Speaker 7: We'll see to it. Monica.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Monica, pull yourself together. What's wrong?
- 14:16Speaker 6: It's that air hostess, Miss Lee.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Well, what about her?
- 14:18Speaker 6: She's lying back in the pantry among the broken dishes
- 14:20Speaker 6: with her head all over blood. Somebody beat her over
- 14:23Speaker 6: the head and left her there to die.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Somebody?
- 14:25Speaker 9: Yes.
- 14:26Speaker 2: But nobody's gone back to the pantry. Nobody's gone past
- 14:28Speaker 2: us except.
- 14:29Speaker 6: Except the pilot or co-pilot of this plane, remember?
- 14:31Speaker 2: Excuse me, Mr. Shepard. I'm going to open the curtains
- 14:34Speaker 2: on that window.
- 14:34Speaker 10: Do you think it's wise, Commander?
- 14:36Speaker 7: We were told not to. Well, we were told a
- 14:37Speaker 7: lot of things. I'll just take the responsibility of.
- 14:41Speaker 5: Good Lord.
- 14:43Speaker 7: There, there, Monica.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Mr.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Naylor, Mr. Naylor. Yes, son, what's up?
- 14:46Speaker 7: Draw the curtain on your window and take a look down.
- 14:47Speaker 7: If O'Reilly and Cohen have got guns, they better keep
- 14:50Speaker 7: them handy.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Is that so now?
- 14:51Speaker 11: Why?
- 14:52Speaker 7: Because we're not flying west. We're over the Atlantic Ocean
- 14:55Speaker 7: now and headed straight out to sea.
- 15:07Speaker 9: Gray water, thin clouds.
- 15:22Speaker 6: We must be miles and miles away from land.
- 15:25Speaker 7: We are miles away from land. Does anybody here know
- 15:28Speaker 7: anything about first aid? I do, Commander.
- 15:30Speaker 10: I studied medicine in the old days.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Then you better go back and look after the hostess.
- 15:34Speaker 2: You'll join Mr.
- 15:34Speaker 7: Kneeler.
- 15:35Speaker 5: Steady, Michael.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I'm all right.
- 15:37Speaker 6: There's this horrible blind feeling.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Air pocket, look out.
- 15:39Speaker 4: Here, Commander.
- 15:40Speaker 7: We're over the ocean.
- 15:42Speaker 3: What the devil's going on here, eh? You were being kidnapped, Mr.
- 15:45Speaker 7: Naylor.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That's my guess. Kidnapped, did you say?
- 15:48Speaker 5: Ah, come off it, Commander. We ain't as dumb as that.
- 15:51Speaker 7: The pilot and the co-pilot of this plane are fakes.
- 15:54Speaker 7: They've replaced the real officer. On a dark day like this,
- 15:57Speaker 7: with their raincoat collars turned up, they could have gotten
- 16:00Speaker 7: away with it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And hijacked us straight off the airfield. Is that it? Yes,
- 16:04Speaker 2: I'm afraid so. The hostess must have spotted one of
- 16:06Speaker 2: them and knocked her out. Now, what about the airport?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Wouldn't they know a plane was missing?
- 16:10Speaker 7: Oh, not until we failed to show up at Philadelphia.
- 16:13Speaker 7: The pilot would report by aerial radio telephone about 15
- 16:17Speaker 7: minutes out of New York.
- 16:18Speaker 2: But after that, silence.
- 16:21Speaker 11: Excuse me, Commander. You say these two fake pilots are
- 16:24Speaker 11: still aboard? In that compartment there with the closed doors?
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yes, that's right.
- 16:28Speaker 7: Well, what are we waiting for, Corn?
- 16:30Speaker 11: Do we get to work on them?
- 16:31Speaker 5: You said it, Barney.
- 16:31Speaker 7: Now, wait a minute. Wait a minute, both of you.
- 16:33Speaker 5: You wouldn't be trying to stop us, would you, Commander?
- 16:35Speaker 7: The one thing we don't want is a gunfight 12,000
- 16:37Speaker 7: feet up.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Can any of you fly a plane?
- 16:41Speaker 7: No, not one of us. Now, neither can I.
- 16:44Speaker 2: So if anything happens to those two pilots, how are
- 16:46Speaker 2: we going to get down?
- 16:47Speaker 7: I see, young fellow. Well, what are you going to do?
- 16:51Speaker 2: First of all.
- 16:53Speaker 2: We'll try wrapping on the door. Have your gun ready.
- 16:57Speaker 2: You can count on.
- 16:58Speaker 11: That, sir.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Fred, Fred, listen to me.
- 17:02Speaker 7: Be quiet, Monica.
- 17:03Speaker 6: Has this anything to do with the scrap of paper
- 17:05Speaker 6: you picked up off the floor?
- 17:06Speaker 7: What scrap of paper?
- 17:07Speaker 2: Never mind, sir. Why, this door, it's unlocked.
- 17:13Speaker 9: Unlocked?
- 17:14Speaker 3: Now, don't take any fool chances, young fella. The way
- 17:17Speaker 3: I always did when I was your age. Stand to
- 17:19Speaker 3: one side when you open that door. But Conan will
- 17:21Speaker 3: rightly take care of it.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Good Lord! Well, the control cabin is empty. There's nobody
- 17:31Speaker 2: at the controls.
- 17:36Speaker 3: You mean we're... We're flying without a pilot?
- 17:40Speaker 11: Yes.
- 17:41Speaker 7: See that stick move back and forth? As though a
- 17:44Speaker 7: ghost had hold of it? Those crooks do.
- 17:49Speaker 2: They set the automatic controls.
- 17:51Speaker 7: It's a gyroscope attachment that keeps her steady. And then
- 17:54Speaker 7: they must have bailed out.
- 17:55Speaker 6: And what's going to happen to us?
- 17:57Speaker 2: You see, Monica, the fact is.
- 17:59Speaker 7: Go on, Fred.
- 17:59Speaker 6: Tell me the truth. I'll know if you don't.
- 18:03Speaker 7: Well, we'll go on until our gas runs out or
- 18:05Speaker 7: until a storm hits us. Then we'll dive into the sea.
- 18:08Speaker 5: It's as good a way of killing Mr.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Naylor as any.
- 18:11Speaker 7: I see, son.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Have we got any chance at all?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Frankly, I don't know. Wait till I get a look
- 18:20Speaker 2: inside of that control cabin.
- 18:21Speaker 11: Holy mother of that star.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Cohen, stop it.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Stop it.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Mr.
- 18:31Speaker 11: Naylor?
- 18:32Speaker 3: Stop playing that infernal mouth organ. If you must play it,
- 18:35Speaker 3: play something cheerful. Yeah, sure, Mr.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Naylor, sure.
- 18:39Speaker 5: How long do you think it'll be before we.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Quiet, Cohen.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Here's the commander back again.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Well, then, fella... The radio telephone's out of order. We
- 18:48Speaker 2: can't signal.
- 18:48Speaker 8: Fred, what about those patrol ships? You said they're 200
- 18:51Speaker 8: miles out to watch for unidentified aircraft.
- 18:53Speaker 6: Won't they see us?
- 18:54Speaker 2: They've seen us already, I expect.
- 18:57Speaker 7: They'll send for an army fighter plane to investigate, but
- 19:00Speaker 7: what can it do?
- 19:01Speaker 5: Yeah, shoot us down maybe, huh? That's fine.
- 19:04Speaker 2: If only somebody could fly the plane.
- 19:06Speaker 5: Well, nobody can, Skipper, so think of something else.
- 19:10Speaker 2: See, Mr.
- 19:11Speaker 7: Kneeler, I was wrong.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Wrong, son?
- 19:14Speaker 2: About what? One of your party, and I can.
- 19:17Speaker 7: Guess which one, dropped a torn piece of paper. There
- 19:22Speaker 7: was a line of writing on it, probably the end
- 19:24Speaker 7: of some instructions.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Well?
- 19:27Speaker 7: Those instructions ended, You should land just as your fuel
- 19:31Speaker 7: fails at 7 o'clock a.m.
- 19:34Speaker 3: You should land just as your fuel fails at.
- 19:37Speaker 2: 7 o'clock a.m.
- 19:39Speaker 3: But that might not have anything to.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Do with the sun.
- 19:42Speaker 3: What made you suspicious of it?
- 19:44Speaker 2: Because it was written in German.
- 19:46Speaker 6: In German?
- 19:49Speaker 2: Quiet, Cohenite!
- 19:50Speaker 3: Can't hear myself think.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Okay, okay, Mr.
- 19:52Speaker 11: Naylor.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I'm sorry.
- 19:53Speaker 7: I thought the fake pilots were kidnapping you, maybe abroad.
- 19:56Speaker 3: There's not enough fuel for that, is there?
- 19:58Speaker 7: Well, if there's enough fuel for Los Angeles, then there's
- 20:00Speaker 7: enough for Europe.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Well, that won't work. They bailed out and left us
- 20:05Speaker 2: to crash.
- 20:06Speaker 11: Excuse me, sir, but it's getting black as pitch out there.
- 20:10Speaker 11: I think there's a storm coming up. What happens when
- 20:13Speaker 11: that hits us?
- 20:14Speaker 2: Plenty, O'Reilly. Plenty.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Yeah, well, I was afraid of that.
- 20:18Speaker 2: If only somebody could fly this plane, I could navigate it.
- 20:21Speaker 6: Navigate it?
- 20:22Speaker 4: Yes.
- 20:22Speaker 7: You have to learn aerial navigation in my business. You
- 20:26Speaker 7: have enough figuring. I might even set a new course
- 20:30Speaker 7: and try the automatic controls on it. No, I don't
- 20:33Speaker 7: dare handle the ship.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 20:36Speaker 6: I know a way out of this.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Well, then speak up, miss.
- 20:38Speaker 11: Is a 90-mile wind going to hit us any minute?
- 20:40Speaker 6: The air hostess, of course.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Miss Lee, what about her?
- 20:43Speaker 8: I remember reading somewhere that most air hostesses get flying
- 20:46Speaker 8: instructions when.
- 20:47Speaker 6: They've been with a company for, well, a given length
- 20:49Speaker 6: of time.
- 20:50Speaker 3: You know, Miss Dale, that's true. There was a girl
- 20:52Speaker 3: who'd been to her airways who told me the same thing.
- 20:54Speaker 6: And if this one can even make a try at
- 20:55Speaker 6: landing a plane, we may get back.
- 20:57Speaker 7: To New York yet.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I thought you said she'd been knocked out.
- 20:59Speaker 6: Well, she is, and badly hurt, but there's just a
- 21:01Speaker 6: chance that maybe she's... There's.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Shepard, coming back from the pantry.
- 21:05Speaker 7: Anybody got a drink?
- 21:06Speaker 10: It wasn't very pleasant back there.
- 21:08Speaker 6: How is she? You know, we were just wondering whether
- 21:10Speaker 6: Miss Lee might be in any shape to pilot the plane.
- 21:12Speaker 7: Pilot the plane?
- 21:13Speaker 10: Why in blazes should she pilot the plane?
- 21:15Speaker 3: There's no time to explain now, Shepard. But we're bound
- 21:18Speaker 3: for Davy Jones unless something's done.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Could she do it?
- 21:21Speaker 5: No.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Not even if we, uh, revived her?
- 21:25Speaker 10: Not if all the doctors on Earth stood at her side.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Why, but I.
- 21:28Speaker 10: I don't think you understand, sir. Miss Lee has just died.
- 21:45Speaker 4: Thin singing of wind above the clouds. Then storm with
- 21:49Speaker 4: a white eye of lightning at the windows. Losing height,
- 21:52Speaker 4: gaining it again. Blown off her blind course, flung partway
- 21:55Speaker 4: back again. Always racing forward on a.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Flight to nowhere. Late afternoon, evening, night.
- 22:01Speaker 4: The steady throbbing of motors like a pulse beat inside
- 22:05Speaker 4: the head. Towards morning, the storm dies away. In that
- 22:09Speaker 4: dim cabin, there is exhaustion of nerves. The hands of
- 22:13Speaker 4: the clock stand at a quarter of two in the morning.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Monica. Monica. Wake up. It's Fred. Keep your voice down.
- 22:31Speaker 6: Have I been asleep?
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yes, for a couple of hours.
- 22:36Speaker 6: They say condemned criminals sleep on the night before their execution.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Where are the others?
- 22:41Speaker 11: I was, uh, boy, back home, uh, counting down.
- 22:47Speaker 7: My father used to say to me, uh, Barney O'Reilly,
- 22:49Speaker 7: says he.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Did you ever see a banshee?
- 22:52Speaker 7: A banshee, says he, is the old woman that lets
- 22:55Speaker 7: you know.
- 22:55Speaker 6: When you're gonna die.
- 22:56Speaker 3: Wipe down, you two!
- 22:58Speaker 2: Uh, no, I, I'm sorry, Mr. Miller.
- 23:00Speaker 7: Uh, no, uh, no offense, James.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Can't a man play a quiet game of solitaire without
- 23:04Speaker 3: somebody gapping all the time? Like nine on red dead.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Listen, Monica. And listen carefully. My first idea was right
- 23:13Speaker 2: after all.
- 23:14Speaker 6: What are you talking about?
- 23:15Speaker 2: There's somebody aboard this ship who can fly a plane.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Shh.
- 23:20Speaker 2: There is. I proved it by the automatic controls.
- 23:25Speaker 6: Proved it how?
- 23:26Speaker 7: If those controls had stayed as they originally were, the
- 23:30Speaker 7: side winds would have blown us clear off our course.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But we're still on our course.
- 23:35Speaker 7: That shows that somebody's been sneaking in there and setting
- 23:38Speaker 7: us right again when we do stray.
- 23:40Speaker 6: And you mean.
- 23:42Speaker 7: I mean that we're headed for somewhere. We're being taken somewhere.
- 23:48Speaker 7: But we may outwit this gentleman yet.
- 23:51Speaker 6: Outwit who?
- 23:53Speaker 3: Is somebody still talking back there?
- 23:54Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Mr.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Naylor.
- 23:55Speaker 7: Monica's just waked up. None of us can feel very
- 23:58Speaker 7: much like sleeping anyway.
- 23:59Speaker 2: You're right, son. I admit it. Come up here and
- 24:01Speaker 2: join me, will you?
- 24:02Speaker 7: With pleasure.
- 24:04Speaker 2: It's the silver that's twice in.
- 24:05Speaker 5: This card game.
- 24:06Speaker 3: But I still can't make it come out. Oh, what's
- 24:10Speaker 3: the use pretending anyway? We know we're in for it.
- 24:13Speaker 2: It's this... Waiting to catch it. Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that goes for all of us, Mr. Naylor.
- 24:19Speaker 2: What I'm dreading is.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Is the minute when those motors choke and go dead.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And we start whirling down.
- 24:27Speaker 5: Down.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Down.
- 24:30Speaker 3: What does it sound like, Commander, when... when motors conk out?
- 24:34Speaker 7: I've never heard it, Mr. Naylor, but I imagine it
- 24:36Speaker 7: sounds like.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Listen.
- 24:38Speaker 2: I imagine it sounds like that.
- 24:40Speaker 6: We're losing height. I can feel it.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Well, Corn, I guess this is the payoff.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Yeah, you said it.
- 24:45Speaker 10: Look here, Mr.
- 24:47Speaker 7: Naylor, we can't be out of fuel.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Because it's too early. Look at the clock.
- 24:51Speaker 3: It's only five minutes to two o'clock.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I beg your pardon, old man. It's five minutes to
- 24:55Speaker 2: seven o'clock. Seven o'clock?
- 24:56Speaker 5: Are you crazy?
- 24:57Speaker 2: No. Haven't you forgotten the cross-ocean changes in time?
- 25:01Speaker 7: By George the Commander's right. European time is five hours
- 25:04Speaker 7: ahead of our time. You don't believe me, just notice
- 25:07Speaker 7: that it's getting daylight outside. I was thinking of that message.
- 25:12Speaker 2: You should land just as your fuel fails at 7
- 25:15Speaker 2: o'clock a.m.
- 25:17Speaker 7: Stand perfectly still, all of you. Hey, what's got into
- 25:21Speaker 7: little Art Ponderoy? I'll show you what's got into me,
- 25:24Speaker 7: my friend.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Yes, I rather thought you would.
- 25:26Speaker 10: I shall go into that control cabin. Follow me if
- 25:29Speaker 10: you like. I shall sit down at the controls. And
- 25:32Speaker 10: I shall bring this plane safely.
- 25:34Speaker 7: To the ground.
- 25:35Speaker 6: Safely to the ground?
- 25:36Speaker 11: Where?
- 25:36Speaker 7: In Germany, of course.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Germany?
- 25:39Speaker 7: Don't pull a gun, Cohen. If you plug in, we're
- 25:40Speaker 7: all done for.
- 25:41Speaker 10: That is good advice, Mr.
- 25:42Speaker 7: Cohen.
- 25:44Speaker 10: I might add that we're getting closer to the ground
- 25:46Speaker 10: every minute.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Ah, for the love of.
- 25:48Speaker 10: Do I take control?
- 25:49Speaker 2: Yes, go ahead. But, uh, we're following you.
- 25:53Speaker 7: Follow by all means.
- 25:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:57Speaker 7: Let's get comfortable here. I take up my position, so...
- 26:01Speaker 7: There's fog below.
- 26:01Speaker 6: Can you see?
- 26:02Speaker 7: Well enough, Miss Dale. Well enough.
- 26:05Speaker 10: We must go down rather quickly. And I can't help
- 26:09Speaker 10: if it's somewhat rough.
- 26:10Speaker 2: On your ears.
- 26:10Speaker 3: You young swine, what's the idea?
- 26:12Speaker 10: The idea, dear patron, is to bring you and your
- 26:15Speaker 10: plans for a submarine freighter to a country which will
- 26:18Speaker 10: appreciate them.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Then those two fake pilots?
- 26:21Speaker 10: They were colleagues of mine. Unfortunately, if they had remained,
- 26:25Speaker 10: your pug uglies would have started a gunfight. And none
- 26:27Speaker 10: of us might have got here.
- 26:29Speaker 5: Well.
- 26:29Speaker 10: So they left by parachute. And I brought you safely
- 26:33Speaker 10: without blood or toil into the boundaries of the Third Reich.
- 26:37Speaker 7: You're going down too fast, man.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Now take it easy.
- 26:39Speaker 7: I am perfectly in command, thank you.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Look out!
- 26:42Speaker 11: The trees!
- 26:42Speaker 2: They're coming straight up at us! Oh... Are you all right, Monica?
- 27:01Speaker 7: Are you all right?
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yes.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Only a bit shaken up.
- 27:04Speaker 5: We're all okay here, Skipper. Shall I give this guy
- 27:06Speaker 5: the works now before they come to get us?
- 27:08Speaker 2: No, don't shoot. Let him alone.
- 27:10Speaker 10: That also is good advice. And now, my friends, my
- 27:13Speaker 10: mission is ended. I stand up on the pilot's chair.
- 27:17Speaker 10: I throw open this glass hatch.
- 27:19Speaker 7: And to all Germany, to all the world, I cry.
- 27:21Speaker 7: This is the stolen plane. It's on the ground on
- 27:24Speaker 7: field number 21.
- 27:25Speaker 2: I'll hit it. Well, strike me blind if it ain't
- 27:31Speaker 2: another one.
- 27:32Speaker 7: Yeah, it's first Rudolph Bess and now this bloke.
- 27:34Speaker 3: What do you suppose they want over here?
- 27:36Speaker 2: English.
- 27:37Speaker 7: Why are you speaking English?
- 27:38Speaker 3: Why, Cocky? It's an even habit we've got in this country.
- 27:42Speaker 7: This isn't England.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Oh, yes, it is.
- 27:44Speaker 7: Better climb out of here and with your hands up.
- 27:47Speaker 7: But it can't be. I followed the course laid down
- 27:49Speaker 7: on those instruments. Unfortunately, old man, I altered our course
- 27:52Speaker 7: last night.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Keep back, Shepard, or you may get a bullet in
- 27:54Speaker 3: the head yet.
- 27:55Speaker 7: Your instructions were all right, but they didn't tell you
- 27:57Speaker 7: about the five hours difference in time. When we got
- 28:01Speaker 7: to the right navigation point, I let.
- 28:02Speaker 2: The fuel out of the tanks. It made you think
- 28:05Speaker 2: we were landing in Germany.
- 28:07Speaker 7: You know, there's nothing like having a good Nazi for
- 28:09Speaker 7: a taxi.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Driver, is there?
- 28:26Speaker 4: And so ends Death Flies Blind, starring Richard Dix with
- 28:30Speaker 4: Gail Page and Montague Love. Tonight's tale of.
