- 0:46Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast with my partner,
- 0:50Brian siglo. I am Curtis Wilson.
- 0:53Brian. How are you feeling in the Smoky
- 0:55Mountains tonight, or we just got ourselves.
- 0:59A big ol W. I'm Great man.
- 1:02How about you buddy? Feeling awesome.
- 1:05Not only a big ol W. Big ol W that we did not have to
- 1:10kind of worried about the last 30, 40 minutes of the game 4014.
- 1:19I guess you would call that a force Corwin.
- 1:22Yeah I like that. I like that.
- 1:23I'll take it or score when Hokies play a good all-around
- 1:28games. Now without you know, a few
- 1:30errors here and there And we're going to head on a little bit of
- 1:33everything today but again it feels great to get that win.
- 1:37It was awesome tonight. Ryan.
- 1:39I know you're sitting there at that cabin.
- 1:41It was also here in the band. It was all come here in the
- 1:45band. Whether it was, you know, you
- 1:48know whether the drum line or the hok IES Hokies it definitely
- 1:54brought a different feel and kind of more of a typical feel
- 1:58that we're accustomed to when we see a game in Blacksburg.
- 2:02Really nice to see that. Really like that.
- 2:05We showed up, especially the way we played in the second half,
- 2:08man, good game all around. I think from the three phases,
- 2:14I'm just glad to see that, you know, we didn't have a hangover
- 2:18from kind of a tough loss last week with you and see.
- 2:21No, not at all. Not a hangover at all.
- 2:23Unlike you and see who had the really bad hangover today with
- 2:26cloth, which probably will make some people mad.
- 2:30But on the other hand is, As you stated, we got on here.
- 2:33It's cool. Yeah.
- 2:35Well, as much as I like a loss to look like a good loss, I want
- 2:41to be level or higher than, but it seems that were competing
- 2:45against for to go to the ACC Championship game.
- 2:48So 100% were UNC loses, the better, our chances of getting
- 2:52their man. Hell yeah, and then we can look
- 2:54and say, well we only played are true.
- 2:56Number one quarterback for a half and we had all of our
- 3:00secondary out in some witch. Exactly, you know, I don't know
- 3:04if that's gonna, you know, come into play at any point but if it
- 3:08does, we can make a better case. They're so damn right.
- 3:11But again, let's get back to our game hook, he's win 4014.
- 3:17And let's just start out beginning real quick.
- 3:19Before it dropped seven o'clock, we found out, we were going to
- 3:23be without some players, some key players on Luke 2 Nu du out
- 3:26again. I think we pretty much
- 3:28confirmed. He was a covid at the end of
- 3:31last week. Because late last week's are
- 3:33just before UNC again. We're deep on the offensive line
- 3:37but Luke should be out. Come next week, which is awesome
- 3:40Jermaine Waller out, you kind of Wonder first time playing in a
- 3:46while coming off that foot if it's just mixing stuff and let's
- 3:49just take keep them out. We can we can control this, get
- 3:52it back to 100%. We saw a tweet earlier and week
- 3:55from jail and wholesome talking about.
- 3:57I just want to play and he was out today and me and you just
- 4:01said Brian a couple seconds ago because we're ready.
- 4:04Come on. I wonder if something happened
- 4:06with and and it sucks. Yeah.
- 4:09I mean, hopefully it's nothing serious.
- 4:11Maybe just a tweak or something like that.
- 4:12But you know, for a guy that's really kind of fought to keep
- 4:16getting back on the field every year.
- 4:18And it's always been just, you know, kind of one thing after
- 4:21another form of feel bad for the kid.
- 4:23Yeah. I said hope.
- 4:24Just something small will see him.
- 4:25Get some some key totes for us as the season goes along.
- 4:29Absolutely. And then, the last kind of the
- 4:31big was Jr Walker, which, you know, takes away from safety
- 4:33death. Looks like we made a few things,
- 4:36a little different with position.
- 4:37He plays tonight, we're going to that little bit later, but let's
- 4:40start brown with the Hokies offense, led by the captain
- 4:44Captain Hook, man. If you look in the hooker, man,
- 4:58One touchdown. No one player with more than
- 5:01twenty nine yards, but we really didn't need that much because it
- 5:05seemed like early on. We took some downfield shots.
- 5:09We had some intermediate passes look like, we were going to be
- 5:12setting up the screen game so all the areas were there for him
- 5:17and Brian would you see? Because that's what I would see
- 5:20in early and then as the game wore on what we didn't need to
- 5:23really pass, because They worried about it, we did meet
- 5:27the, we didn't need to throw the ball a lot because we were
- 5:30effective when we did and we were killing them in the
- 5:32trenches and that would that's a good recipe, man.
- 5:37When hooker was dropping back, he was connecting with his
- 5:39targets, he was affecting them at different levels, you know,
- 5:43he had one where he drove the ball down the field a little
- 5:45bit. He had a lot of intermediates
- 5:47and he had two or three screens couple swing passes, so he was
- 5:52working every area of the field. And that's You like to see from
- 5:55him. We don't need him to go out and
- 5:56throw 25 30 times a game. We just needed to be efficient
- 5:59with the passes and it needs to be able to hit all those levels
- 6:02of the defense. He did a really good job at that
- 6:05all night man. Yeah he does so good making Fast
- 6:10decisions. You see his mind work real
- 6:13quick, you know he gets the ball out to where it needs to go.
- 6:17If it's not there, he's not taking - plays.
- 6:20We saw a couple times trying to set up a screen or a throwback
- 6:23and It wasn't there. He just threw it in the dirt.
- 6:26Yes, so he wasn't taking any unnecessary risks with the
- 6:31football either. So Play, the clean game was
- 6:34efficient and was able to make all the throws all over the
- 6:37field. Absolutely.
- 6:38Now, Brian in this game, I know there was a play that made you
- 6:44super excited in the passing game of all the time.
- 6:50You talk about them that you put back to me.
- 6:54The screen and that's the only exit and you love the screen.
- 7:00Dad screen to juice that goes through 29 yard that go through
- 7:04a touchdown, would you see? Not only, I'm sure you had some
- 7:08flashbacks as soon as you saw that play.
- 7:10But what did you see on that play?
- 7:11That made it so beautiful and such an easy score because it
- 7:15wasn't easy score, dude, it was a thing of beauty.
- 7:17So so let's break it down at multiple levels.
- 7:20Number one juice, great vision, great Running great.
- 7:25Just waiting for the blocks to set up and then following what
- 7:28was going on there, but let's talk about the offensive line
- 7:31and what they did here. You had a nice kind of seal of
- 7:34the trash by less of this myth, which is important to make sure
- 7:39that you're running back. Once he catches the ball, has
- 7:41some room to operate, but the guys out there leading for him,
- 7:46Dara saw Brock Hoffman rocks out there Mall in the guy in the
- 7:52middle of the field and then the thing that really broke it.
- 7:55What would turn a big gain into a touchdown was what Darris
- 7:59always doing out there on the outside.
- 8:03Blocking his safety, engage with them three different times and
- 8:07just pushed him from the 25 yard line to where he was at the 3
- 8:12yard line. By the times you've got in the
- 8:13end zone, just a thing of beauty.
- 8:16I love it. And the way we were running the
- 8:19ball also the way we were passing it to all areas of the
- 8:23field that's when you can do those things and if humans legs
- 8:27too because you do that your back screen, something like have
- 8:32one of the screens in the defense just goes to it and you
- 8:35avoid middle of feel well in and showed it will talk about a
- 8:39little bit later. You avoid that area is filled in
- 8:41this can go in, which it's also now something that you got a
- 8:45little more excited about. Although I don't think we
- 8:47completed. Any passes on and if we did
- 8:50Apologize, we look real quick at my notes Here.
- 8:59Raheem black shoe. You saw them trying to start
- 9:02working him in the screen game, which I know that is something
- 9:05you want. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:07Definitely. The only one that he actually
- 9:10had the catch on was that after that, that penalty that backed
- 9:15us up with like third and 20 or something like that.
- 9:18Late in the game, got a screen to him.
- 9:21Did a good job of kind of waiting on his Blocks.
- 9:23Made a couple guys. Miss got a nine-yard gain out of
- 9:26it. There wasn't a whole lot there.
- 9:28They were kind of waiting for that type of play, but it's good
- 9:32to see him do that. And we need to do that a lot
- 9:33more, whether it's through the screen or just getting him, the
- 9:37ball in space outside of the box.
- 9:40There. I think if we can do that we'll
- 9:41have some success in see his game.
- 9:44Really? Take off.
- 9:45Absolutely. And as I said just a few minutes
- 9:48ago, no, not a lot of action with the wide receivers and
- 9:51tight ends tonight, Khalil screen, 29 yards, let along with
- 9:55heavy on Robinson's 29 yards, Batavia on.
- 9:59One of his plays early was essentially a post wheel combo
- 10:02with Mitchell and where it was a perfect play.
- 10:05And like, you talk about Hendon reading quick, he read that
- 10:09quick, that that safety stayed back here, and this guy went
- 10:12with Mitchell and he just fired it in there and it's a 20-yard
- 10:15gain dad moved us in this foreign territory pretty quick.
- 10:18And so, you know, once that starts happening, I mean, Braun,
- 10:22you know, if we're doing then the way we run or do we need it?
- 10:27No, that's kind of what I was going alluding to earlier.
- 10:30It's that, you know, he's showing that all of those things
- 10:33are in his repertoire he can hit them.
- 10:35He's showing he can hit him against this defense and once
- 10:38they see that, they have to honor that and we did a really
- 10:41good job of kind of leaning on our strengths tonight but mixing
- 10:46in those those passing routes in hitting.
- 10:49Like I said all those varying levels throughout the night
- 10:51where they really couldn't key in on just trying to take away
- 10:56Khalil Herbert. ER, all right, they couldn't
- 11:00stop the rush not at all. So when I say that folks like
- 11:06they legitimately could not watch all night, you know, we
- 11:12just take a look here at uses numbers.
- 11:15I mean, it was absolutely asinine with juice tonight.
- 11:18I mean juice 1/4 223, all-purpose yards, the 29
- 11:23receiving yards, he gets another 143 on the ground, he has to
- 11:27touch down Or should be one touchdown.
- 11:32I mean, my personal favorite Brown was that 58 yard run with
- 11:37the combo block, where I asked you to see it right, where
- 11:42lettuce and crisp, lettuce and Eris are taking it Gary salt.
- 11:48Insulin helps, get leather his, the perfect?
- 11:49He turns his guy. Yeah, big dog gets up field.
- 11:54Moths on and she's his perfect Ally.
- 11:56Yep. That was the big one, but it's a
- 11:58lot of other stuff. Tonight, that looked absolutely
- 12:00great for Herbert. Yeah, so, I mean, you know,
- 12:04let's start with her Birdman. I mean, what can you really say
- 12:07about this guy fourth game, for 100-yard, rushing performances?
- 12:13You know, something we haven't seen to to start as a hokie
- 12:18career ever and to have that many consecutive games, we
- 12:21haven't seen that since David Wilson.
- 12:23So that's that's telling you that what we're seeing here is
- 12:26something we haven't seen in a decade.
- 12:29So this is this is a pretty special run.
- 12:32We're looking at here. Yeah, I really like what he is
- 12:35doing with his vision, man. If you have setting up blocks
- 12:43waiting for Defenders to kind of commit to a fit and then kind of
- 12:46jumping outside or taking another angle.
- 12:49I mean he does so many good things to help his offensive
- 12:53line and you know once they get engaged he is so quick and
- 12:58putting a foot in the dirt and just kind of get through
- 13:00whatever Ali is there. And I'm just, I'm so impressed
- 13:05by what he does. He doesn't really ever have -
- 13:07carries. I mean we had a couple of
- 13:09Tonight? Where there were some
- 13:11penetration and then one where he tried to probably do a little
- 13:13too much, but they're so few and far between.
- 13:16I mean, there's really no criticism that you can throw at
- 13:19this guy. At this point, he's really out
- 13:21there tearing it up. He is absolutely tearing it up
- 13:25Brian, and I mean again, you know, through four games just
- 13:29rocking, I'm not even going to the all-purpose.
- 13:30He has 500 93 yards. That's right at 115 game and
- 13:35it's he's not getting 25, 30 carries.
- 13:38He's Getting somewhere between 15 and 20.
- 13:42He's making the most of it, which I know some people say,
- 13:44well, how are you ever going to sell?
- 13:46How are you going to sell a running back if he's not getting
- 13:4825 or 30 carries a game? Well, if he's averaging 10
- 13:52yards, a carry, why wouldn't you want to come here?
- 13:55Save your body and, you know, stay away from it but Brian is
- 14:03great at night. He had he was not the leading
- 14:06rusher tonight. The captain once again in and
- 14:11hooker leads the team with 164 yards.
- 14:15Rushing on 18 carries three touchdown.
- 14:18He has a long 31. I mean, those legs were big
- 14:23work. Those legs escaping the pocket
- 14:25tonight. Those legs keeping plays alive.
- 14:27I mean, my favorite play of the night with milk was essentially
- 14:32Blackshear. Running a nice of quarterback.
- 14:35I sew up the middle for a touchdown.
- 14:37Look like you just Got up there, sealed that guy, and I think on
- 14:40that play, somebody else do something good.
- 14:42On a bright bright guy, right up in the linebackers face and just
- 14:45drove him out of the play. Yes, nasty offensive line, man.
- 14:54So what did you see? Was it was it I'm not walking
- 14:57all scrambles, right? Because that not yet by so was a
- 14:59design. So was it just put mix?
- 15:04I'd call it a pretty perfect mix.
- 15:05I'm going to give break or Nelson a little.
- 15:08Shout out here. Brad Drew up some great things
- 15:13with him in hooker, and hidden hooker went out there and
- 15:15executed them about as well, as you can do, especially in the
- 15:18Run game and huge day rushing he had, please designed for him.
- 15:23He had things of the Zone, read where he made, some really good
- 15:26reads in the zone, read tonight. And it was able to get out in
- 15:30space, and I tell you the one thing I liked, but he gets in
- 15:33space. Is that he's got that speed but
- 15:36he's Shifty to, he may have made a bunch of guys miss out in the
- 15:41open field. He threw through some spin, move
- 15:44on that last touchdown. And then, you know, he's, it's
- 15:48underrated. He has really good power when he
- 15:51finishes a run. I mean, it's not Quincy,
- 15:53Patterson power and where he's just driving through, guys.
- 15:58But once a guy gets his hands on him, he's gonna pull him about
- 16:01two or three yards before he finishes off.
- 16:03So, He did so good. I mean, he had a couple
- 16:06scrambles out there, but most of it was in the zone read and some
- 16:09of the design quarterback Keepers.
- 16:12It's really funny. My mom's in town this weekend.
- 16:15Visiting, our friend went into made the move, she's like all
- 16:18the nice spin, my mom who she watches football games, but
- 16:22doesn't understand? Yeah, but it was like, it was
- 16:29great to hear that. 185 yards, you know?
- 17:01All purpose. We got a lot more than we can
- 17:05unlock it, we with yeah, yeah, I'll say this.
- 17:09I'm of two minds with what they're trying to do right now.
- 17:13I think that in terms of our game plan right now, we
- 17:16definitely need to get him more in the open field.
- 17:19We saw in the touchdown. It was actually something that
- 17:21probably could have easily went for kind of a three or four yard
- 17:25gain but he breaks a tackle and then breaks the dudes ankles and
- 17:28on the same move and all of a sudden he's in space and once
- 17:32he's in space, he is as deadly man.
- 17:34And what we need to do is get him the ball in space more, but
- 17:37kind of what I'm thinking, they're trying to do with this.
- 17:40I mean they're pretty much using him as an as kind of a spell
- 17:43change of pace back for her right now.
- 17:46I mean, I'm wondering if they're grooming him for more carries
- 17:48next year. Meaning with some of this but
- 17:53I'd like to see him just used as an offensive weapon right now
- 17:57versus how we've kind of been using them so far.
- 17:59But again, a big touchdown tonight and in the grand scheme
- 18:05of things that's very little to complain about.
- 18:07Yeah, exactly. Like we have a weapon that we
- 18:10haven't really used for three-in-one.
- 18:12We're scoring point or we're almost corn at will now pretty
- 18:17much. We got 40 tonight.
- 18:18Then we left points on the field.
- 18:20We liked a lot of points. I feel we might as well.
- 18:23He's two field goals, right? QT, field goals.
- 18:28When we missed one, we might. We had a couple of penalties
- 18:35that either pushed us out of field goal, range or took away a
- 18:38big gain. I mean, there was points left on
- 18:40the field. We could have easily got 50 on
- 18:42these guys tonight if me to play the way we should have and again
- 18:46that's still not discounting the effort.
- 18:47I mean the offense played damn good tonight, it really did and
- 18:53you talk about that and that's the scary part when you know
- 18:59that this could have easily. Ben it, what you will?
- 19:04This could have been probably a 50 burger that we we we did some
- 19:11things on defense or triple hit the second here.
- 19:13But let me hit one last thing because I know this is close to
- 19:16your heart, Brian. And I will say it for you.
- 19:19Get a little deeper into it. This offensive line group, even
- 19:22with some players out where nasty and would be.
- 19:27Yep. And, you know, I've been we've
- 19:30been talking about a little in a couple of plays.
- 19:32It isn't there. So I had a fuck.
- 19:34You pay me game. He showed out tonight, I mean,
- 19:39it popped off the film. I mean, even people that are
- 19:42novices watching offensive line play, can see what he was doing
- 19:45tonight. Yep.
- 19:47Yeah, absolutely. Was like I said, I mentioned on
- 19:49that combo how he helped got a field including the way.
- 19:52And there were some other place to where you just he he like he
- 19:57said, he's making himself for money right now.
- 20:00You haven't yet mentioned last week in PFF.
- 20:02FF and I think they, he is now in the top 50 of their draft
- 20:07board. When he's jumping up the board
- 20:10probably faster, definitely faster than any underclassmen
- 20:13tackle. Absolutely.
- 20:15And for him, I would say it sucks that he would leave.
- 20:18But you know what? Big guy go because you can play,
- 20:22you understand the game, they talk about how he doesn't have,
- 20:27doesn't have some lateral quickness, but he understands
- 20:29angles which can get you a lot of money because As you get
- 20:32older, the elite tackles lose that.
- 20:35And if they don't understand angle angles, you seen it Brian.
- 20:39You've seen guys who are good for seven or eight years and
- 20:42then they lose that thing. And they don't understand the
- 20:44Angles and they're out of the league.
- 20:45He understands angles would tell me he could last a long time in
- 20:48the NFL. What about the guy at the
- 20:51center? We put him as our number two.
- 20:55Yes, sir. And he's still, he's still
- 20:57learning the that dirty moniker. We're going to bring it back
- 21:01man. I love it.
- 21:03He's just he's in there in the trenches, doing all the Dirty
- 21:06Work. You see him working every, every
- 21:08gay man getting a couple key blocks on, some of the big runs.
- 21:12Yeah. I'm like I said, I really liked
- 21:14what he did on that hinted hooker.
- 21:16I so, touched down in the Red Zone, just completely took his
- 21:20guy, out of the plane made hookers job really easy, finding
- 21:23the whole, finding the alley, and get in the end zone on
- 21:26touch. So love what he's doing.
- 21:30He's a guy that, you know, might Not be getting the big accolades
- 21:34like Daris all, but he's definitely working his way
- 21:39towards something bigger as well.
- 21:40I think he's going to be a guy that's going to be someone to
- 21:42watch. I don't know if he'll be
- 21:44ultimately, if drafted in some of the higher Realms like we may
- 21:49see Darris all, but I think he's definitely a guy that's going to
- 21:52be on an NFL roster at some point tonight.
- 21:56You know, only giving up a one sack you make some good old.
- 22:03There were a few times, where the pressure was there, but it
- 22:06wasn't all night. So, that was the reason he made
- 22:11the right call to put everybody in position to pick up in a
- 22:14couple times. You know, when, when Henry was
- 22:16getting pressure, it was almost by Design because it was on some
- 22:18of those Throwbacks, your own, some of those screens where the
- 22:20linemen where they needed to be, just where the ball was going
- 22:25with, either taken away, too quick, or the, they're perfect.
- 22:28Call was made where the rush just got there too fast.
- 22:32So you know, you could set it up the way you want it to.
- 22:34So, you know, I really like that that offensive line and let me
- 22:38give another shout-out to let the Smith.
- 22:41Absolutely he's not jumping off like Brock and CDR.
- 22:45But I mean he is steady Eddie dude, doing things inside a
- 22:49couple big seals tonight. Getting good, good Zone blocks
- 22:53to free both Blackshear and Herbert on a couple plays.
- 22:58So really like what he's doing, did some good jobs when Hooker
- 23:02was getting outside the pocket and making some plays in The Run
- 23:04game as well. And on the on the Zone reads of
- 23:07he's been like I said steady Eddie just doing his job and
- 23:12having fun doing it looks like he's also, I'm guessing that he
- 23:17is lacking a little bit more because the night he had the
- 23:20defensive tackle, throw a punch at him and gave us his yard
- 23:25because he just stood there holding and all of a sudden he
- 23:32just kind of looks Let's see, we have at 350 yards,
- 24:33eight and a half yards per catch.
- 25:50Let's see here. We had how many yards tonight
- 25:53350 Braun written 50 on 41 carries
- 26:08that equals almost seven yards. Let me ask this if that's your
- 27:15in, he goes through that and coach would just like, listen,
- 27:20he's got to go place. Got get him out there, would you
- 27:23feel that your son's best interest in that coach's heart
- 27:28problem? No, no, you know, I think
- 27:31everyone appreciates, especially knowing what they know now, of
- 27:34where coach Fuente was coming from even if you still disagree
- 27:37ultimately, with decision. That was made.
- 27:39That's fair, you know, you can feel how you want to about the
- 27:42decision but I I think you can at least appreciate it.
- 27:45Let's go defense. You had some ups and downs
- 27:48tonight but Brian not one, not two, not three, not four.
- 27:55Defense calls has five turnovers tonight.
- 27:59Three forced fumbles, two interceptions.
- 28:02I mean be verbal, you know what? You know what, let's do.
- 28:14This will do kind of the good and the bad of the night,
- 28:16because I think that that's, that's, that's the best way
- 28:19we're going. We're going to kind of look at
- 28:20what happened tonight, because there were some bad, but when
- 28:23you say five turnovers are one, there wasn't too much bad.
- 28:26So now what I really like the most is how opportunistic we
- 28:29were taking advantage of Boston College.
- 28:32Every time they make mistakes man just either whether it's
- 28:35ball Hawking whether it's punching balls out you know we
- 28:39didn't let them get away with the whole lot tonight and I like
- 28:42that. That's It's kind of the typical
- 28:44Hokies defense that were used to.
- 28:47It is, it's like ham and tap got in there and just said, listen,
- 28:52when you have the opportunity especially those punches
- 28:55tonight, man, they were sitting there and they're trying to
- 28:58grind. You saw them coming tomorrow on
- 29:00that one, inside the 20-yard line, he came in and it just
- 29:04looked like he was about to knock him out uppercuts.
- 29:07It falls out, screw her on the when they were getting close to
- 29:11the end zone. In and I think that makes us
- 29:16feel better about Hammett slightly, teach these things.
- 29:20The interception, first of all, if Garrett Hewitt doesn't hit
- 29:25that ball. Brian Murray got his one later.
- 29:28Yep. Put a few and doesn't hit that
- 29:30ball. Brian.
- 29:31Murray houses that he jump that route like okay.
- 29:48It's sort of stinks for, you know, for him, he needs the one
- 29:51later. Yep.
- 29:53Our does off of the off of the Divine Diablo play man which
- 29:59we're going to get to divide a little later.
- 30:00So let me quite on that, but probably talked about two guys
- 30:06that really could hurt this team tonight and we maintain the kept
- 30:12them under control. Jose flowers, seven receptions
- 30:15for 57 yards. I mean, he was averaging close
- 30:18to 20 of carry tonight, right? At eight.
- 30:22What did you see? You know, what do we do to him?
- 30:26The big thing is, we didn't let him get deep on us man and we
- 30:29did it, a bunch of different ways we mix up coverages.
- 30:33Sometimes we hated him off, sometimes we almost played man
- 30:36on him. Sometimes we just had straight
- 30:39up cover three and they weren't able to get behind our defense
- 30:44to make those big plays and we were able to when he did get the
- 30:47ball. Even when he was in space we got
- 30:51him down even if he got the first down and we didn't let
- 30:53that turn into a big play. And I think that's the big thing
- 30:57to take away is that he wasn't getting chunk plays against us
- 30:59tonight. He was getting underneath routes
- 31:02and if we, if you can make, say flowers run underneath all
- 31:05night? You'll take that.
- 31:06Yes, we will take that all night.
- 31:09Now, then Braun their primary underneath guy, you got it okay
- 31:14night, I mean long toward a touchdown, you know, which which
- 31:19a hell of a play by him him stretching out there like that.
- 31:22But then you kind of look at his overall statistics night, they
- 31:26Okay, I mean forceps in 53 yards but we kept him under his normal
- 31:31reception total. We kept well under his receiving
- 31:34yards total. I mean you know, it definitely
- 31:39helped having a full secondary tonight.
- 31:41Getting a linebacker Corps that I know you're going to get into
- 31:44a little while having everybody back for certain situations.
- 31:49Yeah. Maybe the big thing we did with
- 31:50Hunter long is that, you know, we didn't let you know, the only
- 31:54the only time we really let Let him take a good play and turn
- 31:57into a great play with that one. Touchdown broke a tackle
- 32:00stretched out late. I mean he was a he was a damn
- 32:02good play and we could have stopped it at least from being a
- 32:05touchdown. So Kudos them on that play but
- 32:07he's only other big play was on a scramble drill where he ran
- 32:10toward the sideline and caught it right on the edge there that
- 32:13was his only other big chunk. Play the met.
- 32:14The rest of it was just you know a couple stick movers and a
- 32:18couple your routes that got him, you know, eight or eight or nine
- 32:22yards but he really was held in check and I think we did a good
- 32:25job. Either running one guy.
- 32:28I didn't let him just follow him where we did a good job,
- 32:31shadowing him and Zone coverage. And we really kind of took away
- 32:34the things he likes to do and let's talk a little bit about
- 32:40the linebacking corps since we're here man.
- 32:42Yeah well well let's first of all say this Rush defense which
- 32:47we know that the whole team but last week the lab at record got
- 32:51just absolutely obliterated tonight.
- 32:55Rusty pints to 90 yards. Yes.
- 32:58And see does double their yards per carry at one point, 8 2, 3
- 33:02.6, but still it's three and a half yard to carry.
- 33:06We will take that every week if possible under 100 yards under
- 33:09four yards, a carry after last week that's a win.
- 33:12That is a big win. But what did you see the wine
- 33:15bag record? Do this week Grand?
- 33:17Yeah, I mean they weren't playing as timid.
- 33:20They were playing more downhill. Like you mentioned, I saw them.
- 33:24Look a little Like they weren't out of position as much and I
- 33:30like, I like that because that was the thing that bothered me
- 33:32the most I think but to other than being timid in the last
- 33:35game was kind of just how out of position they were on a lot of
- 33:38situations there and they look like they were playing a little
- 33:41bit more within their game. Not trying to do too much.
- 33:44I'm going to give actually a specific shout out to Dax
- 33:47hollifield who I raked over the coals.
- 33:50Last week, pretty badly. He stepped up this game.
- 33:53He didn't have a great game. I mean, he's not going to get
- 33:57defensive player of the week or anything like that, but very
- 34:00solid both in coverage stopping the Run decision making and his
- 34:06tackling improved as well. So I'm gonna give him a personal
- 34:09shout out here, but Tisdale abrooke looked, well, look much
- 34:13better this week as well, played more aggressive and especially
- 34:16in the second half your work looked more like the The Rookery
- 34:20used to absolutely. He did.
- 34:23He did now is one he put a pie. Hop on jerk a bitch tonight.
- 34:27I mean, like Dirty Bit, the same after that, he didn't know, he
- 34:31really didn't. He was getting rid of the ball
- 34:33quicker than he was ready to do it quicker.
- 34:35Like, I don't want to take another one of those.
- 34:38Let's do a quick shout outs. We hit them up already but Brian
- 34:41Murray, tamari, Connor, strong, who Brian wasn't he supposed to
- 34:47be part of the no good? Horrible.
- 34:48Very bad 2020 class and that nobody should ever play.
- 34:52And they should have never went anywhere him and Quixote Jenkins
- 34:55both Man. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:58You know Devin Taylor gets to pick where it looked like I
- 35:02think me and you were talking about it and I think Devin
- 35:06player played some safety tonight because on that pick
- 35:09mean you're talking to we were looking at We R Jr.
- 35:11Walker was last weekend that quarter out.
- 35:14He was in that similar spot. So again is build six, 1205,
- 35:20little undersized but definitely has the capability to do that
- 35:24mission. He read that ball perfect.
- 35:28He saw what was happening? You know, drove on it.
- 35:31Made the play, man. It was just, it was a good read
- 35:33and that was a ball. That I think there's a little
- 35:35bit of miscommunication between Hunter long and jerk evict there
- 35:39and I think Geo that was just something that he took advantage
- 35:42of it and he has really good ball skills.
- 35:45He definitely goes after the ball.
- 35:47So I like what he did and I liked the way he were able to
- 35:50kind of make that safety position a little bit stronger
- 35:54than it's been the last Last last couple weeks so good to see
- 35:57him out there to make it two players from that position.
- 36:00Yeah finding him getting himself on the field getting himself.
- 36:03If you look at I mean that's part kind of about the
- 36:06Singletary is I don't know where his draft stock is but his draft
- 36:11stock is varying at the opportunity to come back next
- 36:14year which helps with death all over the field.
- 36:18Let's do this. Only one sex night.
- 36:23I was a maribor know, kind of Gang tackle stack.
- 36:27What did you see with the defensive line because it looked
- 36:31a lot better. It looked like they were getting
- 36:33pressure. They were making jerk of it.
- 36:35So early it's a thing that they did the best was passed
- 36:39wrestling's and pressing and squeezing the pocket.
- 36:43So they did a good job of not really giving your Kovac
- 36:46anywhere for him to kind of squeeze through Lane, step up in
- 36:49the pocket, get outside the pocket, he had a couple times
- 36:51where he got outside, was able to make some throws towards the
- 36:54sideline, but But overall, throughout the night, we did a
- 36:57good job of staying in this pass-rush lanes and the
- 37:00defensive tackles for maybe taking still a step back in the
- 37:04Rush game. Did a good job in the rushing
- 37:06the passer kind of pressing the pocket backwards or covid
- 37:11couldn't step up and either you know feel comfortable like
- 37:14throwing it down the field or stepping up and really taking
- 37:17off to get a you know, a few yards on a broken-down play.
- 37:20So you know, kudos to those guys much improved game from last
- 37:24week. I know the More opportunities
- 37:26with more both drop back game versus the RPO that we saw with
- 37:30you and see, but they took advantage of it and look more
- 37:33like the defensive line we saw in the first two games than what
- 37:37we saw last week. Yeah.
- 37:38And even Brian mentioned about the defensive tackles, it looked
- 37:42like and you probably could go later this week and look a
- 37:45little bit deeper into it. Something happened after
- 37:48halftime to with the defensive tackle.
- 37:51You did not see the lanes as big and I don't know if it was What
- 37:56essentially if it was different combinations of players or if it
- 38:00was different techniques, they were taken care of.
- 38:03But what am I going crazy? They did you not see that to it?
- 38:07Look like there was something different there even though.
- 38:10Yeah, we had a 10 point lead, but it was quickly down to 3
- 38:13then back up at 10. Yeah, it definitely looked
- 38:17different. I'd have to go back and look at
- 38:18the table or to tell you definitely what, what kind of
- 38:21changed, but you definitely saw them playing with, you know?
- 38:25We said it with the linebackers with more aggression, they
- 38:27looked like they were just attacking more and not thinking
- 38:30as much and sometimes, you know, thinking is great, but it's not
- 38:34great. When you're playing a quick
- 38:36react game like football. Sometimes you just got to get
- 38:39your read, make your decision and go.
- 38:42Absolutely, alright, last part of the good night, he was our
- 38:48number one. On a pivotal player buddy that
- 38:53Heavenly definitely made such a difference tonight, man.
- 38:57What did you see? Just overall because if you just
- 39:02felt his presence there, it was just different.
- 39:05You know, it seems like a couple times early.
- 39:08We might have been lost but it's like he got them straightened
- 39:11especially in that secondary as the game wore on, he was
- 39:15definitely on them with tackling and he was reminding, people
- 39:19hate just because we're there. We still got to make the play.
- 39:21We got to make the tackle. He so he, the leadership was
- 39:24there. But the play was there as well.
- 39:27I mean, whether it was in the running game, coming up getting
- 39:30some really good. It fits bring the players down.
- 39:32He wasn't missing any tackles and in the, in the pass game and
- 39:38he's playing a good job when he was, when he had deep
- 39:41responsibility, making sure that they flowers didn't break off
- 39:44those big ones, but he also when he was coming up the kind of in
- 39:49the in the shallow part of the Zone, there we saw him make that
- 39:52play that led to the the Murray interception.
- 39:55He was a guy that got in there. Got his hand on the ball, kind
- 39:57of knocked it up and you know Marie was able to clean it up,
- 40:00get the pick. Kind of get a good run back
- 40:01there. So the Devon Diablo, we missed
- 40:06him these last two games and it showed up tonight and it showed
- 40:11up, especially in the second half when his leadership really
- 40:13kind of took over. And you know, he was able to
- 40:17both get the guys where they needed to be but also make plays
- 40:20himself with his physical abilities.
- 40:22Absolutely. All right.
- 40:24Well, you know, since it's been such a good night, we've been
- 40:28talking about a lot of good things.
- 40:30What's hit a few things? Defense came to light up this
- 40:33week, still some things there that you need to see Improvement
- 40:37on because we have to have some tough competition, down the
- 40:40road. The first one bright and I
- 40:43texted you numerous times, we can't get off the bleep and
- 40:47field on, third and fourth down at one point.
- 40:51Now, they ended, I believe tonight on third and fourth
- 40:55down. I had it written down, and now I
- 40:57have deleted it. Unfortunately. - you wrote it
- 41:03down. Thank you, 11 of 18 but at a
- 41:05point in time in the early part of the third quarter, they were
- 41:09seven of ten and they were driving.
- 41:13We were forcing turnovers. Yes.
- 41:14But you know Brian me and you kind of talked about it in the
- 41:17past getting the turnover is good.
- 41:18But of a team continuously tribes on you.
- 41:22You can't get a turnover every time.
- 41:24Yep. Definitely got to get better.
- 41:26I mean there's going to be offenses that we played down the
- 41:28road. Probably not.
- 41:30And, you know, the next two or three, but, you know, once we
- 41:34get it into the Miami's and even the Pittsburgh's and then
- 41:39obviously Clemson, there's going to be opportunities where we're
- 41:43going to play an offense that is not going to just give us the
- 41:45ball like happened. Like what happened tonight?
- 41:47So got to be better on third Downs, getting off the field,
- 41:49getting the ball back into that offenses hands.
- 41:53Got to be better on key towns in general.
- 41:55You know, sometimes we get them behind the sticks and then we
- 41:58just very next down, you know, they get all the yardage that
- 42:02they just lost and then some back like let's go ahead and
- 42:07keep them down, while they're down, man.
- 42:08You got to go got to do a lot better job at that, but the
- 42:12fourth and seven and night where I think they ended up scoring
- 42:14that one was, that was kind of that magic made you angry
- 42:19because it's just like, they're in no man's land.
- 42:22And it's Fourth and one or two, or even three, its fourth and
- 42:27seven. We give up the big play in to me
- 42:31that can really screw up a team mentality.
- 42:34If she's just freaking feel right now.
- 42:39Now let me ask this something you saw on the back end, you
- 42:44know, to I think I might have noted it too, but I think we
- 42:48were since we're using the leverage better.
- 42:50We were attacking a little better.
- 42:51It didn't upset me as much. But you talked about that, they
- 42:54weren't attacking some of the underneath route from stuff,
- 42:58which I think gets you because I think you, you see things like
- 43:04that from a moth and defectors thing.
- 43:06If you're not attacking, we're going to keep taking it and get
- 43:08it to better offenses with players can attack them in the
- 43:12field. It's not going to it's not going
- 43:16to end. Well yeah and I made a note of
- 43:18that they did better with that in the second half but in the
- 43:20first half some of the underneath stuff, they weren't
- 43:24coming up as quick as a as like they were so worried about not
- 43:30letting them get behind and they just weren't attacking.
- 43:32Even once the guy had the ball in front of them on the first
- 43:35touchdown, you know, it was just a shallow dig kind of underneath
- 43:40the linebackers and kind of ran past all three of them into the
- 43:44alley and got the touchdown. I mean, that shouldn't happen.
- 43:47Do you you texted me real quick that we lost leverage on that?
- 43:52Why you Like real cloth leverage like Rook because it was the
- 43:55wall and if wrote just instead of I don't know what he took
- 43:58like this weird step. Where if you would have just
- 44:00made him turn back in, he's going to have to go into three
- 44:03guys to get a touchdown, he likely isn't.
- 44:07But maybe it's the these guys having to learn again, we saw
- 44:14more Zone conference and we place them in like a couple
- 44:16times yet but we're seeing more Zone concept.
- 44:19Where I think if we played man all night, I think we probably
- 44:24would have. I think there would have been 14
- 44:27more tolerable. I think jerk of each has a sort
- 44:30of arm and with flowers and went long.
- 44:32Some of the other guys, it's like that but whatever gets
- 44:35irritating is the second and six and it's a little underneath
- 44:39route and they get eight and you're like why?
- 44:42Yeah we got to stop that stop that tackling better than last
- 44:48week but there were some time I'm the ammonia chat and when I
- 44:52hit you and I love Armani, dude. Just help wrap the guy up and
- 44:55get him out of bounds. Yep, there's no need.
- 45:00How many adults lie that that the plaintiff coming back
- 45:02anyway, but you know, you're already there just get him out
- 45:07of bounds, man. Get him out of bounds.
- 45:08Make the easy play make. Yeah, I think that's.
- 45:12And I think what we saw the first couple weeks that they
- 45:14were making it easy play, it was get the guy hold.
- 45:19There's going to be here. People here in a ton.
- 45:20The second to get him down the only way last week, and then you
- 45:25stall some, a lot of diving at Players week which was not that
- 45:30good with, you know, Point get you upset.
- 45:33But again as the game wore on it got better as the game wore only
- 45:39got better. People say, well you have a
- 45:41lead, you do different things. And it's like, yeah.
- 45:43But when you get that on tape Grand, right, when Pam and
- 45:48Clay's, Ryne Smith and No filter, Lincoln deltek.
- 45:53Get that on tape. Like, this is what we need to
- 45:55do. You think we're in this all
- 45:57game? They're not driving it down.
- 45:59Yeah. And I mean, let's go ahead while
- 46:02we're kind of talking about that a little bit and give the
- 46:05coaches, some shoutouts not just for a good game plan coming in
- 46:09but for making really good halftime adjustments, especially
- 46:12on the defensive side of the bowl because while we only gave
- 46:16up seven in the first half, they drove the ball a few times on us
- 46:19in the first half. And we were pretty stout in the
- 46:22second half. Yeah.
- 46:24After that. Open TouchDown Drive.
- 46:27Yeah, we were. We were very Stout.
- 46:29We work, we weren't great, but we weren't as bad and we
- 46:34definitely were a lot better on third down in the second half.
- 46:37Forget when we were first half, we were pretty bad over on third
- 46:40down. Yeah, after that.
- 46:43Yeah, after that early portion, where they got 27 10 out of 10
- 46:47for he thrust the way 50/50, which Which is good.
- 46:52Also we porch couple more turnovers.
- 46:54They were having to do some different things and they had
- 46:58some three and outs. So, definitely on that.
- 47:03You mention it earlier. I know you want to hit it one
- 47:05more time offensive. Tackles yeah, we need to see
- 47:10them better in the Run game. I think they did a really good
- 47:12job. Rushing the passer tonight
- 47:14especially staying in their Rush lanes and pressing the pocket
- 47:17but need to see more consistency from them in the running.
- 47:21Occasionally they were still getting moved tonight.
- 47:22Not anything. Like we saw against UNC, which
- 47:27is good. It's nice to see them bounce
- 47:29back this week but you know, I think we held them to 90.
- 47:34I think we probably could have stopped, you know, a couple more
- 47:36runs. And I would like to see more -
- 47:39rushing plays from them. Maybe that would have been an
- 47:41indication that we were doing some good things with the
- 47:43defensive tackles there. They didn't have a lot of
- 47:45negative plays but what they did have was they weren't able to
- 47:48get anything established where they felt like they could Lean
- 47:51on their running game, which is what we wanted to do is get them
- 47:53out of that kind of make them one-dimensional and that's what
- 47:55they were pretty much the whole second half.
- 47:58Yeah. It pretty much was, I mean after
- 47:59that touchdown they went fumbled punt down, fonts interception
- 48:05and then they had one to end the game.
- 48:07Yep, I'll say this, they actually came with a game plan.
- 48:11That was different than what I thought.
- 48:12I mean even within the running game, they were primarily
- 48:17between the tackles like I said, some of that inside.
- 48:20Soon, whether it was from shotgun or from Ace and they
- 48:23actually mix it up and lots of night.
- 48:25They ran some some sweeps with the other, their second team
- 48:28running back a lot. They got him on the field, a
- 48:31whole lot more than he's played in any other game.
- 48:33I've watched this year. So you know, they brought
- 48:35something new to the table that had been on film and we were
- 48:37still able to adjust to it. So I like that.
- 48:40Absolutely absolutely. So, you know, again 4014 when we
- 48:46cover the spread which some people on Her today did not like
- 48:52the fair telling us because take the 13.
- 48:57There was also one of the other podcast I listen to I've texted
- 49:03you on yesterday morning. Like I like so and so this is
- 49:08what he said, pennies in the cap.
- 49:09It off with Virginia Tech could win by 2026.
- 49:20Yeah. They would have went six and
- 49:30two. Okay, okay in three, you know,
- 49:33again, you know game screwed. You let me win this week which
- 49:37was trusted the Wahoo's, but what did I say?
- 50:27And those with fifty six seven and half, it was it was one of
- 50:35those one of the top screens and I had to go do something I come
- 50:39back. I'm like, well, this is getting
- 50:41changed. Click, we hit Miami pit.
- 50:46We we got it at 14. They lost by 12 Liberty wins.
- 50:53Again, that's screwed us. Anyway, what did I say though?
- 50:56Even even without Pickett, Are we didn't run away from that,
- 51:01but he gets a decent defense. Just You know, they struggle and
- 51:11they should have they should be demoing.
- 51:13That mean, you got lucky. Let's take a look at these other
- 51:16ones. Syracuse Liberty Liberty wins
- 51:19again. Liberty now has beaten teams
- 51:22combined 2 and 17. I think I didn't see this game
- 51:28because we ended up going out in the cold.
- 51:30A sec about to meet some friends.
- 51:33We stay there to 6:30 because everybody from the Everybody
- 51:38from the neighborhood came out all the kids.
- 51:41All the parents we were playing basketball and then the coach
- 51:46that lives across the street, yours, all out here playing
- 51:48fields all the families. Hey, I'm getting everybody
- 51:50Pizza. So, he leaves comes back gets
- 51:53two pieces for everything on the plate.
- 52:39Like I said, A little bit of a matching Elle
- 53:09column there. Notre Dame is going to be UNC.
- 53:13Okay, got it. Somebody's got to beat Notre
- 53:16Dame. Now they don't, you know, why
- 53:20was it? Because we going to be Clemson.
- 53:22Hey, hey, when they come to Blacksburg December this, it's
- 53:29going to be a foot of snow on the ground.
- 53:32What is this? I'm going to rub their little
- 53:36hands together and be like, let's get dirty baby.
- 53:41Last one. Which was the out of conference
- 53:43Bama, who good, Nick Saban finds the as after three - test, which
- 53:51I think I don't care that he did it.
- 53:52I carry that. He got a different rule than
- 53:55another coach, at least that's the appearance that it has.
- 54:00That's the appearance it is, but it's also, that's also the SE
- 54:06C's that if you get a, if you get a positive and then get
- 54:13three consecutive - they considered a false positive.
- 54:20The ACC doesn't do that and things like that, so it helps
- 54:27that they're using the rabbit test.
- 54:28If we could just get on that board, that would help us a lot.
- 54:31I think, John don't get really do not get, I mean, unless you
- 54:37see open up your wallet pay for these tests, get it done.
- 54:41No, no, we just want to put some another name, you got like, two,
- 54:45you got two of the best. Medical universities in the
- 54:48fucking country. You do something.
- 54:54Do something test faster because they're happy with what they're
- 55:02getting right now. They know who essentially they
- 55:05know who they want. It is what it is.
- 55:10Let's rock the boat a little bit.
- 55:11How about that? Anything else.
- 55:17Surprised you from I know you were driving most of the day I
- 55:21was driving. I was A little this little that
- 55:24but I was checking in pretty regular and there's there's some
- 55:28interesting things out there. Like I said, I think the some of
- 55:31the later action shot and more and then UVA just kind of laying
- 55:35over in the second half. It's very true.
- 55:40Funny thing I got today was my cousin who South Carolina grad.
- 55:46I mean, I'm watching some of that game is like, what do they
- 55:48do here? They are not.
- 55:51I'm sending them like they are throwing some atrocious.
- 55:54South Carolina and he texted me, three or four things, his
- 55:57buddies tweeting. And it seemed like after that
- 56:00point, there were no more Flags thrown against South Carolina
- 56:03and they came back and scored like, you know, 17 unanswered to
- 56:08beat Auburn at the end. The SEC, protects their prize
- 56:14teams in some way, shape or form and this is there was, there was
- 56:19a Code Geass out there that says I'll bring you all down.
- 56:26This is what happens when y'all get us after midnight and it's
- 56:35after 1:00 a.m. in the morning, I've had a couple beverages as
- 56:38Michael sure. Brian has also woke up early but
- 56:42when Mom and town, I literally walked a little one downstairs.
- 56:45Hey, go. See Grandma.
- 56:46I'm going back upstairs. Sleep for a little felt good.
- 56:53Out great. We got anything else to hit run?
- 56:56Anything else that popped out? I know there's one thing you
- 57:01don't want to talk about, so I'm not going to bring it up but of
- 57:07are. All right.
