- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Ten children died and many more were
- 0:04Speaker 1: injured in Canada last year as the result of crashes
- 0:08Speaker 1: involving e bikes and east scooters, a startling statistic that's
- 0:12Speaker 1: prompting governments to take action. The provincial government is seeking
- 0:16Speaker 1: feedback from the public as it prepares to draft legislative
- 0:20Speaker 1: amendments to the Highway Traffic Act to address the proliferation
- 0:24Speaker 1: of the machines, many of which are virtually silent and
- 0:27Speaker 1: can travel at high speeds. Government Services Minister Mike Goosney
- 0:32Speaker 1: says government's aim is to make sure users, particularly young people,
- 0:36Speaker 1: are safe.
- 0:37Speaker 2: We really want to bring in some tools for the
- 0:40Speaker 2: enforcement side to be alien act so you know that
- 0:43Speaker 2: people are protected.
- 0:44Speaker 1: M and L Vice President Isabelle Fry says it's become
- 0:47Speaker 1: a growing problem in many municipalities right now.
- 0:51Speaker 2: There are some shared use trails. There's the Waterford River
- 0:54Speaker 2: Trail that goes all the way from downtown Saint John's
- 0:56Speaker 2: all the way through Paradise through Mount Pearl to go.
- 1:00Speaker 2: But with this technology now, this is happening so fast
- 1:04Speaker 2: that we're still trying to catch up in terms of
- 1:07Speaker 2: regulations because on these shared use trails. We also have
- 1:12Speaker 2: walkers and pedestrians, and when you have a bike that's
- 1:16Speaker 2: going pretty fast on the trail, it can be scary.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So it's all a matter of trying to figure out
- 1:20Speaker 2: where we are, what we're going to do.
- 1:22Speaker 1: A dal Housie political scientist believes it was in everyone's
- 1:25Speaker 1: best interest to get a renegotiated Churchill Falls agreement before
- 1:29Speaker 1: the next provincial election in Quebec. Lori Turnbull says the
- 1:33Speaker 1: outcome of a Quebec election is unknown and there is
- 1:37Speaker 1: too much uncertainty. If a deal is not finalized before then.
- 1:41Speaker 3: A minority government is possible, a key Q minority is
- 1:44Speaker 3: definitely possible, and so then that just kind of throws
- 1:47Speaker 3: everything up in the air. So I think it was
- 1:49Speaker 3: definitely in everyone's interest to get this sorted out now
- 1:51Speaker 3: people to do the same.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Ontario's premier is drawing a line on data centers, saying
- 1:57Speaker 1: companies behind the AI boom will have to pay their
- 2:00Speaker 1: own way for electricity. Doug Ford says while the industry
- 2:04Speaker 1: is vital to the future economy, Ontario won't hand out
- 2:08Speaker 1: incentives or let new facilities become a burden on other ratepayers.
- 2:12Speaker 1: The Independent electricity system operator says requests from data center
- 2:16Speaker 1: projects have doubled since March, reaching roughly seven thousand megawatts,
- 2:21Speaker 1: more than a quarter of Ontario's peak demands. US federal
- 2:26Speaker 1: investigators say broken engine parts shattered a window on a
- 2:30Speaker 1: plane shortly after takeoff in Greece last month. The incident,
- 2:34Speaker 1: involving European budget carrier Ryanair, caused a sixty one year
- 2:38Speaker 1: old man's head to be sucked into the hole in
- 2:41Speaker 1: the fuselage before his fellow passengers pulled him to safety.
- 2:45Speaker 1: The National Transportation Safety Board says in its report release
- 2:48Speaker 1: yesterday that parks flew out of the engine after a
- 2:51Speaker 1: fan blade broke the window and damaged the fuselage in
- 2:55Speaker 1: several other places. It says it found bird remains inside
- 2:59Speaker 1: the engine, suggesting the plane may have struck birds during
- 3:02Speaker 1: take off. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
