- 0:01Speaker 1: Usually we get to catch up with an artist on
- 0:03Speaker 1: their way to a big old number one.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It already happened. So I don't even know why you're here,
- 0:06Speaker 2: but I'm kidding Ley with Water, dude, get out of here.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I guess it's twelve, twelve forty.
- 0:15Speaker 1: How awesome is it to be sitting here celebrating a
- 0:17Speaker 1: number one song?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Man?
- 0:18Speaker 3: It was great, man.
- 0:19Speaker 4: I mean, and I've had a couple over the years,
- 0:21Speaker 4: but this one was quick.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It was a big song.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Man.
- 0:25Speaker 4: It's it's always awesome when you see something that fans
- 0:27Speaker 4: kind of run to like this one. And I think
- 0:29Speaker 4: this song went platinum and then sent at the radio
- 0:32Speaker 4: and it's you know, it's giant song. It's become one
- 0:34Speaker 4: of the biggest moments in my live show. So it's
- 0:36Speaker 4: a really cool thing.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Well, and let me ask too, because we were lucky
- 0:39Speaker 1: enough to meet you. Tay and I were both working
- 0:42Speaker 1: for one of the iHeart radio stations in Las Vegas.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And your career started, and it's like a like a
- 0:50Speaker 1: regular career. It took time. You had to hit the
- 0:53Speaker 1: road a lot. You never gave up no matter how
- 0:56Speaker 1: hard it got. And now you've hit this point where,
- 0:58Speaker 1: like I mean, I don't want to use superstar such
- 1:01Speaker 1: a weird word, because like, yeah, you're still a human
- 1:04Speaker 1: at the end of the day, but like do you
- 1:06Speaker 1: feel more of like a star in the format or
- 1:08Speaker 1: like like your place is more cemented now than it
- 1:10Speaker 1: ever has been.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Well, I mean, we'll we won three ACM Awards. It's
- 1:14Speaker 3: the last award show.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I mean that kind of stuff is not necessarily something
- 1:17Speaker 4: that I've had is a goal, but it's definitely a
- 1:20Speaker 4: validating thing. You know, it means a lot when you're
- 1:22Speaker 4: getting that kind of recognition, especially from your peers, and
- 1:24Speaker 4: this industry is whole. I mean, as long as people
- 1:27Speaker 4: are coming to my shows and and singing my songs
- 1:29Speaker 4: back to me, I'm okay if I don't win a
- 1:31Speaker 4: lot of awards, but it doesn't mean it doesn't mean something,
- 1:33Speaker 4: and it's a it's a cool thing, and it's a
- 1:35Speaker 4: really it's a great time to be on a road
- 1:39Speaker 4: tour and have a couple of big songs to play.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think I think that woman pointed it said, do
- 1:43Speaker 1: you want him to be your new dad?
- 1:44Speaker 2: The little girl Sugarhead?
- 1:45Speaker 1: No, she said no, So I don't is that normal
- 1:49Speaker 1: women with children in Colorado maybe.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I don't know, there's a there's a man with a
- 1:52Speaker 3: child too.
- 1:53Speaker 2: But listen, equal opportunity as long as they bought.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It, Like, yeah, what's what's the fan support been like?
- 2:00Speaker 1: It feels like that that side of your career has
- 2:02Speaker 1: taken off the same as the music has.
- 2:04Speaker 4: It's been a lot like this, people with their kids
- 2:06Speaker 4: showing up and just giving support.
- 2:09Speaker 3: You know, the shows are great.
- 2:10Speaker 4: All of the damn country music shows are selling out
- 2:13Speaker 4: on this tour. Have an ail out on the road
- 2:15Speaker 4: while we've got two really big songs together. It is
- 2:17Speaker 4: a really cool thing.
- 2:18Speaker 3: It's hard. You can't script that any better, you know.
- 2:21Speaker 4: And you know, the people are a lot of people
- 2:24Speaker 4: found me kind of through like their buddy, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 4: years and years ago when I was just starting out
- 2:29Speaker 4: tour and it was really grassroots how people were finding
- 2:32Speaker 4: on music. So I think they're probably the biggest fans
- 2:34Speaker 4: I have because they're so proud.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I feel like they had a big hand in it.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Whish they did.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Isn't it funny how fans and we've seen this with
- 2:40Speaker 1: a lot of artists and countries country more than any
- 2:43Speaker 1: other format. I feel is somebody who was a fan
- 2:46Speaker 1: of you when you couldn't sell out Marathon. What's for
- 2:50Speaker 1: anybody listen is what like I mean you getting there,
- 2:54Speaker 1: like like when you wouldn't be able to sell at
- 2:57Speaker 1: a venue like that and they were supporting you. Now
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know you're knocking on the door of selling out
- 3:02Speaker 1: an arena like Bridstone. They're like, yeah, but he's he's
- 3:06Speaker 1: my artists. But isn't it funny? Like how defensive they
- 3:08Speaker 1: can get, like you're almost family.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I always say that, like this is the era of
- 3:12Speaker 4: everybody wants to know about the guy nobody knows about.
- 3:14Speaker 4: They want to be wanting to tell you about this person,
- 3:15Speaker 4: you know. And it's because of all the different avenues
- 3:17Speaker 4: for music, and there's so many new artists coming out,
- 3:20Speaker 4: but they're those diehard fans that have been there from
- 3:23Speaker 4: the beginning. I mean, there's a lot of truth to it,
- 3:25Speaker 4: because I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for people
- 3:27Speaker 4: showing up with these little Mexican restaurants and stuff. I
- 3:30Speaker 4: was playing back in Alabama years ago.
- 3:33Speaker 2: At the Mexican restaurant. What you ordered though.
- 3:36Speaker 4: They had a thing called the Local Mexican. It was
- 3:39Speaker 4: just chicken and cheese and rice and steak.
- 3:42Speaker 3: I'm very I'm like a kid.
- 3:43Speaker 4: I like cheese and sauce, basically a date night with
- 3:47Speaker 4: Ryler Green chick tenders in a steak.
- 3:49Speaker 3: It was great, no size, nothing.
- 3:53Speaker 1: As you continue to move forward career wise, you talked
- 3:56Speaker 1: about the awards and the number one songs. People singing
- 3:59Speaker 1: back your songs is top for you, right?
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Outside of that, what are the things that have kept
- 4:06Speaker 1: you going even when it was early in your career
- 4:08Speaker 1: and it was tough to get a number one and
- 4:09Speaker 1: it was tough to get a song on the radio.
- 4:11Speaker 1: You know, things a little more fluid for you now.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But what are things that you appreciate more now?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Maybe more than that.
- 4:17Speaker 4: It always helped me a bunch that I had a
- 4:19Speaker 4: real job in my up framed house is my whole life.
- 4:21Speaker 4: So anytime I got tired of writing country songs, so
- 4:24Speaker 4: I'd get up on a roof and work in a
- 4:26Speaker 4: one hundred degree heat, and I'd want to go.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Back and write more songs.
- 4:28Speaker 4: But it helped me a lot that I didn't really
- 4:30Speaker 4: have a lot of big dreams or aspirations, and country
- 4:34Speaker 4: music I enjoyed playing, so I didn't feel like I
- 4:36Speaker 4: was working towards this goal.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I just got to go play songs that made up
- 4:39Speaker 3: every week.
- 4:40Speaker 4: And writing has always been something that I enjoyed. So
- 4:43Speaker 4: on those years when I probably should have got a
- 4:45Speaker 4: little burned out with it, I was still so glad
- 4:46Speaker 4: to be able to go do it that it didn't
- 4:48Speaker 4: really ever feel like work for me.
- 4:49Speaker 1: As a guy who enjoys the creation process. And we
- 4:52Speaker 1: anytime we've talked, you've brought up.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Like you loved it.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Write you loved it, Write you loved it? Write? Do
- 4:58Speaker 1: you enjoy that more than the performance?
- 4:59Speaker 3: Asked?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Because there's some guys and girls that are like performing
- 5:02Speaker 1: number one, everything else is fine.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Well, I'll put it like this, there's times when I
- 5:06Speaker 4: don't want to get on stage and saying, you know,
- 5:08Speaker 4: whether you're feeling bad or you're worn out you had
- 5:10Speaker 4: ten shows in a row, or your travel or whatever.
- 5:12Speaker 4: But there's never a.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Time when I don't want to pick up and write
- 5:14Speaker 3: a song, you know.
- 5:15Speaker 4: So I just feel like that's something that just has
- 5:17Speaker 4: always been a I would do regardless, you know.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Are you super protective of that?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Are you?
- 5:22Speaker 1: Like? Is it easy to When I say collaborate, I
- 5:24Speaker 1: don't mean like on a song, like recording a song together?
- 5:28Speaker 1: Are you protective of song ideas? Are you like easily
- 5:31Speaker 1: open to collaborate in like.
- 5:32Speaker 2: A room full of people?
- 5:33Speaker 3: I never have been, but uh.
- 5:37Speaker 2: That sounds about right.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Uh.
- 5:42Speaker 1: So they're building a bar downstairs. Yeah, now so, and
- 5:47Speaker 1: so either they'll test it or listen. If this may
- 5:50Speaker 1: be your last interview, I got to.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Tell you this.
- 5:53Speaker 4: I've bought a house, uh the other day, a newer house,
- 5:56Speaker 4: and so I'm just kind of moving into it. And
- 5:59Speaker 4: I got home the other day worn out, been on.
- 6:01Speaker 3: The road all weekend.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Every alarm in the house is going on, every smoke alarm,
- 6:04Speaker 4: same time, and the house wasn't on fire, so something
- 6:08Speaker 4: was going on. They're all wired together, and so I
- 6:11Speaker 4: gave it about ten minutes and then I took every
- 6:14Speaker 4: one of them down. And there's one in every crevice
- 6:16Speaker 4: of every room. So it took me forty five minutes.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I got a pile of them that tall, took the
- 6:20Speaker 4: batteries out of them.
- 6:22Speaker 2: There's a fire marshals somewhere just going.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Uh about the writing, Yeah, I've.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Never been like stingy about song ideas.
- 6:33Speaker 4: I've always thought, especially now that I've gotten to know
- 6:35Speaker 4: a lot of other songwriters, I know what they're good
- 6:38Speaker 4: at or what I think they bring to the table,
- 6:40Speaker 4: and so I kind of might have an idea and
- 6:41Speaker 4: I think, oh, it'd be good to say to write
- 6:42Speaker 4: with this person. But at the same time, a lot
- 6:45Speaker 4: of songs, I mean, I wrote completely by myself for
- 6:48Speaker 4: the first ten years of my career. I've never co written,
- 6:51Speaker 4: and still some of my biggest songs are solo rights.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I mean, Worst Way is a solo right, Grandpa's Grandpa's
- 6:56Speaker 4: never died, Jesus saved, don't mind if I do. And
- 6:58Speaker 4: these songs are really doing well. So there's something too.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I think, maybe how simply I say stuff. You know,
- 7:04Speaker 4: sometimes you get with songwriters and they try to make things,
- 7:06Speaker 4: you know, a little too poetic, and you know, a
- 7:09Speaker 4: lot of I always like songs that are really straight
- 7:12Speaker 4: at it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You know, when it comes to that, are you knowing
- 7:18Speaker 1: that you've done a lot of it yourself, so like
- 7:20Speaker 1: you're comfortable in that lane?
- 7:21Speaker 2: What if somebody brings you an idea?
- 7:24Speaker 4: To be honest, that's probably the biggest asset to me
- 7:28Speaker 4: is in co writing, is you don't come up with
- 7:30Speaker 4: a great idea every day. I can tell you this
- 7:32Speaker 4: and a lot of songwriters would agree with this. Probably
- 7:35Speaker 4: I've written a lot of the best version of mediocre ideas.
- 7:39Speaker 3: That's what happens.
- 7:39Speaker 4: You get in the room, and you know, you when
- 7:41Speaker 4: you're taking somebody else's time, especially a great songwriter they
- 7:44Speaker 4: write with the artists, you feel like, well, we got
- 7:45Speaker 4: to come up with something, and you just don't have
- 7:47Speaker 4: it every day, you know. So you go and you
- 7:50Speaker 4: kind of settle on an idea and you write a
- 7:52Speaker 4: great version of it maybe and it's it's okay. But
- 7:55Speaker 4: when you come up with an idea that's great, especially
- 7:57Speaker 4: something that I'm like passionate about.
- 7:58Speaker 3: It's an easy song to write.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Is there a song you've put out that you're like,
- 8:02Speaker 1: that's this is good, but then it took off, You're like, oh,
- 8:06Speaker 1: maybe it's better than I thought it was.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I felt that way about worst way.
- 8:10Speaker 4: I didn't know it was a really, really big song.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I wrote it. I thought, man, I need to write
- 8:15Speaker 3: more love songs.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I don't write that kind of stuff, and a little
- 8:17Speaker 4: more of a you know, Eric Church Rickenball type vibe,
- 8:20Speaker 4: and it just blew up. I had no idea and
- 8:23Speaker 4: I've never really lived in that space.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Very much. You know the like You Loved Me with Ella.
- 8:27Speaker 4: I thought the chorus was catchy, but I thought talking
- 8:30Speaker 4: versus was probably a little too traditional.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So this shows I have no clue.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Uh No, I don't want to start country music beef.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Okay, but did you see Dylan Marlowe attempt to help
- 8:42Speaker 1: her out?
- 8:43Speaker 2: Help ll out?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Yeah? I saw what did I see?
- 8:47Speaker 1: I saw some It was it was a riverfront Heay
- 8:49Speaker 1: and I were hosting the Riverfront stage and so we
- 8:52Speaker 1: introw Ella and all of a sudden, your part comes
- 8:55Speaker 1: and she's like, oh.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Here's Dylan marlow comes running out and he got like.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Three lines in and he he's like, they'll stay.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Yeah. I saw a video because somebody sent to me.
- 9:05Speaker 4: It said Riley Walgreens on there and I just because
- 9:08Speaker 4: I know Dylan is why that's funny to me. But
- 9:11Speaker 4: because I did a song with Dylan on his last record,
- 9:13Speaker 4: stick to My Guns.
- 9:14Speaker 3: But really really good.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Dude, And uh, you got to give a hats off
- 9:18Speaker 4: to him for trying it. I mean, like, I don't
- 9:20Speaker 4: know that I'd go on stage and sing somebody else's song.
- 9:23Speaker 3: That's tough.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Well, and I want to ask you.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Got to think people were really even if they know
- 9:28Speaker 4: I'm not there when I play you.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Like You Love Me, people are still looking for Ella
- 9:31Speaker 3: to walk out.
- 9:32Speaker 4: So people are probably doing that with me, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 4: So I wouldn't want to be the guy that's not
- 9:35Speaker 4: me to walk out during that song.
- 9:37Speaker 3: That's pretty tough.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Well, and that's that's the next thing I was going
- 9:39Speaker 1: to ask you as And that song wildly successful, I'd imagine,
- 9:43Speaker 1: even more than you guys would have expected. Is it
- 9:46Speaker 1: tough to because you want to bring it live? Because
- 9:48Speaker 1: now it's a part of your story, right, regardless of
- 9:50Speaker 1: her song, part of your story and maybe why it's
- 9:52Speaker 1: somebody bought a ticket. Is it awkward to do that
- 9:55Speaker 1: song knowing that half the time people are going to
- 9:57Speaker 1: be looking over your shoulder?
- 9:59Speaker 4: Well, you know, very fortunately, which just doesn't happen very often.
- 10:02Speaker 4: With the time of Ella's on tour with me. Yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 4: so the damn country music tour. She's at every show,
- 10:06Speaker 4: so we get to do it together and don't mind
- 10:08Speaker 4: if I do. Is this giant song as well? So
- 10:10Speaker 4: we got two very different songs. That being said, I
- 10:12Speaker 4: have played it without her several times, and I'm sure
- 10:14Speaker 4: she's done the same thing sometimes I get people out
- 10:18Speaker 4: of the crowd, and you never know what you're gonna
- 10:20Speaker 4: get with that, you know, Sometimes it's really great. Sometimes
- 10:22Speaker 4: they freeze up. But you know, it's a good problem
- 10:28Speaker 4: to have such a big song. And like I said,
- 10:30Speaker 4: it's a really fun song. It's a good break in
- 10:33Speaker 4: my set two to go and throw it back to
- 10:34Speaker 4: that one.
- 10:36Speaker 1: When it comes to the tour, you're seeing radio success
- 10:40Speaker 1: more than you ever have, which obviously helps sell tickets. Yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 1: is this tour seeing more success than you expected it too?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Are you getting more from this tour than you expected to?
- 10:50Speaker 4: I've been surprised in a good way for the last
- 10:54Speaker 4: five years touring. Well, what you see when you have
- 10:58Speaker 4: radio success and even award show success and television opportunities
- 11:02Speaker 4: as you see it grow quicker and bigger, and that's
- 11:05Speaker 4: you know, like you Love Me was my first like
- 11:09Speaker 4: TikTok success. I guess you would say, you know, I've
- 11:12Speaker 4: never had a song that really blew up on the internet,
- 11:14Speaker 4: you know, and it's it's all been real gradual, and
- 11:17Speaker 4: that one like the next day you couldn't open your
- 11:19Speaker 4: phone without seeing it.
- 11:21Speaker 3: It was everywhere.
- 11:21Speaker 4: So it's been a really big tour for that reason.
- 11:25Speaker 4: It's we're kind of winning in a lot of different
- 11:27Speaker 4: areas that I've never really been in.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Is it tough to be comfortable there knowing that, like,
- 11:31Speaker 1: those are all things you didn't expect, right, you were
- 11:33Speaker 1: just a guy that wanted to do country music.
- 11:37Speaker 4: It's for me, it's just makes me want to go
- 11:40Speaker 4: write more songs, play more shows. It's you know, I mean,
- 11:43Speaker 4: it's always kind of validating when you get some kind
- 11:45Speaker 4: of recognition from your peers. And like I said, it's
- 11:47Speaker 4: just when things are going well, it's easy to get
- 11:49Speaker 4: out of bed.
- 11:50Speaker 3: And want to go right, want to go play.
- 11:53Speaker 1: It's easy to sit here and talk about the best stuff.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So I'm gonna ask a two part question that's going
- 11:57Speaker 1: to start with the worst. Yeah, what is the worst
- 12:00Speaker 1: song you've ever written? That it's out there, You're not
- 12:04Speaker 1: proud of it, it might not make the live show anymore.
- 12:06Speaker 2: And you're like, yeah, let's pretend that one don't exist.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Well, I'm pretty picky about what I cut them. I
- 12:14Speaker 4: don't put a ton of stuff out that I don't like.
- 12:16Speaker 4: I don't know that I've got a ton of songs
- 12:17Speaker 4: that I just hate. There's a lot of stuff that
- 12:19Speaker 4: the quality production quality is rough. Like so when I
- 12:23Speaker 4: cut all of the first handful of songs I recorded,
- 12:26Speaker 4: I did them in like Bob's garage, and I don't
- 12:29Speaker 4: like hearing my voice anyway.
- 12:30Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 12:30Speaker 4: There's a lot of people that are like that. They
- 12:31Speaker 4: don't like to hear theirselfs sing. And those are just
- 12:34Speaker 4: like nails on Chalkbard for me to hear. And there's
- 12:36Speaker 4: pretty much everything I put out, you know, And there's
- 12:39Speaker 4: still some songs people like. I'll be down at the
- 12:41Speaker 4: beach or something pulled up at an island and there'll
- 12:43Speaker 4: be people on a boat listening to like north On
- 12:44Speaker 4: twenty one of these songs, and I'm.
- 12:45Speaker 3: Just crawl underneath the boat. But it's a you know,
- 12:51Speaker 3: it's something about it. People like these songs are still around.
- 12:54Speaker 1: As you continue to write and continue to record. What
- 12:57Speaker 1: is the song opposite that? That's a song that's going
- 13:00Speaker 1: to be hard to beat? Like what is your what's
- 13:03Speaker 1: your top that? You're like, how do I get better
- 13:06Speaker 1: than that? How do I do better than that?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Well, I mean with success, you know, I wish Grandpa's
- 13:12Speaker 4: Never Died is one that's always going to be hard
- 13:15Speaker 4: to beat. But I really love the song Jesus Saves
- 13:18Speaker 4: it was on my last album. As far as the
- 13:21Speaker 4: story song, it's the best song I've ever written, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 4: to tell a story, and I think the message is
- 13:26Speaker 4: great and.
- 13:28Speaker 3: I don't look at it like how can I beat it?
- 13:31Speaker 4: But I do try to use those songs to get
- 13:33Speaker 4: myself in the headspace I was in, because when you're
- 13:35Speaker 4: in that spot and it's.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Just flowed and creatively, you feel like you write.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Ten songs that day, that's that's when it's kind of magic,
- 13:42Speaker 4: and you don't it doesn't happen often. You can schedule
- 13:45Speaker 4: a ride every day for six months and it never happened,
- 13:47Speaker 4: and one day you're sitting there and eating pasta on
- 13:49Speaker 4: the couch and you think of something. So for me,
- 13:51Speaker 4: it's just hammered them out, writing as many songs as
- 13:54Speaker 4: I can, and always looking for titles.
- 13:57Speaker 2: What usually comes first the write or are the name?
- 14:02Speaker 3: It's the music or the the name.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it's I think it's different every time, but for me,
- 14:09Speaker 4: the idea like sometimes it's not very sessed out.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I don't really know what it is. It's just a thought.
- 14:14Speaker 4: But a lot of times that's the first thing you know,
- 14:17Speaker 4: I saw a guy on the side of the road
- 14:19Speaker 4: the signs that Jesus saved. I thought, man, you know,
- 14:22Speaker 4: everybody always so quick to think about their own drugs
- 14:24Speaker 4: or this and that whatever, and thought, but man, like,
- 14:26Speaker 4: what kind of stuff could he have gone through in
- 14:27Speaker 4: his laugh that got him there? That if it had
- 14:29Speaker 4: happened to me, I'd be doing the same thing. And
- 14:31Speaker 4: I just thought about that for probably three months, and
- 14:33Speaker 4: then one day it all came together, you know.
- 14:36Speaker 3: And so it's it's usually an idea. I've got to
- 14:38Speaker 3: be pretty passionate about that's.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I love the story of a song, and I and
- 14:42Speaker 1: I Tay and I have talked about like podcast ideas
- 14:45Speaker 1: and all that, because there's so many the songs are fantastic,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but sometimes this story behind the song is even better
- 14:51Speaker 1: than the song could ever be. Oh yeah, and it's
- 14:53Speaker 1: and it's and it's even like asking we caught up
- 14:56Speaker 1: with Kenny Chesney and asked about a song that he
- 14:59Speaker 1: passed on. He passed on check Yes or No, Right,
- 15:03Speaker 1: Jake was it Jake O? And passed on Big Green Tractor.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And so so there's all these stories on these songs
- 15:09Speaker 1: that are just wild. Who was it Blake Shelton had
- 15:14Speaker 1: recorded Toby Keith's Which song was it?
- 15:18Speaker 3: I felt? I remember hearing this the other day. I
- 15:20Speaker 3: can't remember what song it.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Was it was.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I mean, it's one of Toby's biggest hits. It's like
- 15:23Speaker 1: it's like, uh so you heard.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Him singing and then didn't want to do it again?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Yeah, And he was like, well cool, I guess I
- 15:28Speaker 2: forget it.
- 15:29Speaker 1: But when it comes to that type of stuff, have
- 15:33Speaker 1: you do you have a story like that.
- 15:35Speaker 3: I don't have any, like I didn't cut something, you know,
- 15:38Speaker 3: or whatever.
- 15:39Speaker 4: But there's several songs that got interesting stories behind him,
- 15:42Speaker 4: especially when I was early in songwriting, because I didn't
- 15:44Speaker 4: put any thought into big success. It was just like
- 15:47Speaker 4: I'd play a show and I think, man, this kind
- 15:49Speaker 4: of line goes overwhel or this does or whatever. And
- 15:52Speaker 4: I had a song I wrote that really kind of
- 15:54Speaker 4: helped start my career, is called Barryman Dixie, and I
- 15:56Speaker 4: wrote that about I was it was just like where
- 15:58Speaker 4: I grew up. But I was thinking about the movie
- 16:01Speaker 4: Weekend at Bernie's. I was like, if I was to
- 16:03Speaker 4: die at a young age, I wish my buddies would
- 16:05Speaker 4: just put sunglasses on me. And take me to the floor,
- 16:07Speaker 4: Obama and an Auburn football game and Tuscaloosa and Talladega Racetrack.
- 16:11Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:12Speaker 4: So it was a funny idea and they played that
- 16:14Speaker 4: song at funerals all over the place in Alabama. Now,
- 16:16Speaker 4: so it went completely the other direction.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Another aspect of the like story part of songwriting is
- 16:25Speaker 1: sometimes a great idea and you just mentioned you sat
- 16:27Speaker 1: on the one song for three months or whatever. Sometimes
- 16:31Speaker 1: the idea hits you and it might take a year
- 16:34Speaker 1: to write this song. So what is what's the And
- 16:37Speaker 1: you don't have to give details because I know how
- 16:39Speaker 1: it is with songwriting, But what's the best idea in
- 16:41Speaker 1: your phone right now? You've held on to the longest, uh, Like,
- 16:48Speaker 1: do you get past a few months or you like,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'll get back so.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Well I wrote yesterday, I sit down and there's always
- 16:55Speaker 4: the last five or six that or things I'm really
- 16:57Speaker 4: fired up about. And then roll up and scroll up
- 17:01Speaker 4: and sometimes if you're not find anything, we've all thrown
- 17:03Speaker 4: some titles out, you know whatever. But I had a
- 17:07Speaker 4: song that I'm finishing now as I wrote it by myself.
- 17:11Speaker 4: It's called My Way, and it's it's a weird problem
- 17:14Speaker 4: never had with a song before. But I like the
- 17:16Speaker 4: verses so much that I don't want to write a chorus.
- 17:19Speaker 4: And I'm almost like trying to figure out how I
- 17:20Speaker 4: can just write like four verses and just because it's
- 17:23Speaker 4: and there are songs like that, you know, like stylistically,
- 17:25Speaker 4: people do all kind of different stuff, but it's one
- 17:28Speaker 4: that I've had finished, so to speak, if I just
- 17:30Speaker 4: write a chorus for six months, but I'm like, I
- 17:33Speaker 4: like it so much, I want to do it right.
- 17:34Speaker 4: And that was something I never did when I first
- 17:37Speaker 4: started writing, because I didn't put that much thought into it.
- 17:39Speaker 3: But now I'm like, hold on, this might be actually good,
- 17:41Speaker 3: so let me try to do it right.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what, pull it out.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Let's work on it right now. We can stop this,
- 17:48Speaker 1: wouldn't that be hilarious?
- 17:49Speaker 2: Dokie.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I'm sure you've heard a million radio guys. I got
- 17:52Speaker 1: a song idea, Riley. Let me tell you when it
- 17:55Speaker 1: comes to the rest of.
- 17:57Speaker 2: The year, what are some things you're looking forward to?
- 17:58Speaker 1: Because with the success of this ella, the success of
- 18:01Speaker 1: the recent single, you're burning at both ends right now, right,
- 18:05Speaker 1: So what are some things you're looking forward to, like
- 18:07Speaker 1: stepping away musically from.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Uh well, I mean, obviously we're right in the middle
- 18:12Speaker 4: of the tour. That'll go till you know, around November,
- 18:15Speaker 4: and then I'll get to go hunting.
- 18:17Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 18:17Speaker 4: I'll get to get in the woods, get back home
- 18:19Speaker 4: and visit the family. I'm going to plan on going
- 18:21Speaker 4: somewhere warm, you know, around the fourth.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I took that week off, so it'll be nice to
- 18:26Speaker 3: visit with everybody, and.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Everything's going great. The tough thing about when it's going
- 18:31Speaker 4: like this is you are busy, you know. So we're
- 18:33Speaker 4: trying to make hay while the sun shining, and I
- 18:35Speaker 4: enjoyed my time off more now than ever with how.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Busy you are because of that success.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Right now, is it tough to to get in the
- 18:42Speaker 1: rights and figure out the next album and the next
- 18:44Speaker 1: singles and like your next cycle.
- 18:46Speaker 4: As they would say, It's not tough to get motivated
- 18:50Speaker 4: for it, it's just tough to find the time for it.
- 18:52Speaker 4: I mean, that's the crazy thing about how things are
- 18:56Speaker 4: going now, is like I need Worst Ways number one
- 18:59Speaker 4: right now, and I need two more.
- 19:01Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 19:02Speaker 4: I need the next album full of hits, and it's
- 19:05Speaker 4: you know again, I think you can write thirty songs
- 19:07Speaker 4: to write one decent song, and looking at it like that,
- 19:09Speaker 4: you just got to keep grinding.
- 19:11Speaker 1: I do want to ask about the success of your spot,
- 19:15Speaker 1: Doug Blind. Yeah, Doug Blind literally on the other side
- 19:18Speaker 1: of town here, yeah, which is cool, Like it's a
- 19:20Speaker 1: cool concept. You did it. Old Dominion is not on
- 19:24Speaker 1: Broadway either, so it's cool to see artists like invest
- 19:27Speaker 1: in Nashville.
- 19:28Speaker 2: But like where the vocals hang.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Well yeah, Old Dominion from the right next door to us.
- 19:32Speaker 4: And for me, I never hung out down here, you know, broadly.
- 19:36Speaker 3: I just I was always in midtown.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Winners is the building where my bar is now is
- 19:41Speaker 4: connected to Losers, and that was where Whiskey Jam was
- 19:43Speaker 4: and everybody played there, you know, And every relationship I've
- 19:47Speaker 4: got in town with songwriters and other artists has all
- 19:50Speaker 4: been in that building.
- 19:51Speaker 3: So it's cool now to have my name on.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Something and have young up and coming artists coming there
- 19:55Speaker 4: and you know, get up to a song and maybe
- 19:57Speaker 4: they get a start.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Over there too.
- 19:59Speaker 4: But it's a really full circle moment for me. And
- 20:01Speaker 4: also it's one bar in Nashville. I can't get thrown
- 20:04Speaker 4: out of your name's down there, Yes, can't everybody else out?
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'm done and it never closes for you, depending on
- 20:10Speaker 1: the kind of night you're having.
- 20:12Speaker 4: It should I need to put a I got a key,
- 20:15Speaker 4: which is crazy, you know what I mean.
- 20:17Speaker 3: I've got a key to a.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Bar that's wild and very unsafe.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I go. You should come up with any breakfast
- 20:23Speaker 3: with me.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Sometimes I have breakfast there when listen, I'm a breakfast
- 20:27Speaker 1: What nothing having breakfast with Briley Green can tell me
- 20:30Speaker 1: when the Nashville bar scene has changed a ton because
- 20:35Speaker 1: it was like, you know, the names like Tutsis and
- 20:38Speaker 1: all that, and then it became artists who have you know,
- 20:41Speaker 1: they've sold out in all these awards, and now you
- 20:43Speaker 1: have artists who are still brand new, like Landy Wilson
- 20:47Speaker 1: is down the street, Jelly Rollers down the street literally
- 20:50Speaker 1: right underneath us. They just announced it's gonna be post
- 20:53Speaker 1: malonees bro So is that like, what is that for
- 20:56Speaker 1: you to see? As somebody who grew up wanting to
- 20:59Speaker 1: do country music, You've spent a ton of time in Nashville,
- 21:02Speaker 1: your name is on a bar as well. What is
- 21:03Speaker 1: it like to see that culture change from like these
- 21:07Speaker 1: these massive names to like people massive names that made
- 21:10Speaker 1: an impact.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Yea, the massive names that are making it.
- 21:13Speaker 4: So I think it's a cool thing, man, Like you know,
- 21:17Speaker 4: how I did it was a little unorthodox. There's probably
- 21:19Speaker 4: people that could look at my career and go, well,
- 21:21Speaker 4: he didn't come in Nashville and play Broadway for five
- 21:24Speaker 4: years to you know, hopefully impress a record label and whatever.
- 21:27Speaker 3: And I didn't do that.
- 21:28Speaker 4: I didn't play in offices and try to get a
- 21:30Speaker 4: record deal. I toured around the Southeast and kind of
- 21:32Speaker 4: built a little following.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And a little bit of the time.
- 21:35Speaker 4: And you know, I did that for about ten years,
- 21:37Speaker 4: and then labels started to come down to my shows.
- 21:38Speaker 4: So in a way that was different, you know. And
- 21:42Speaker 4: these artists now like it can happen quick, you know.
- 21:46Speaker 4: And for me, it's like the more success this town
- 21:50Speaker 4: has and these bars in town have and these other
- 21:52Speaker 4: artists have, I just love that it's making a swing
- 21:54Speaker 4: towards traditional country music and that sounds coming back, and
- 21:57Speaker 4: that means I've got a chance as long as that's
- 22:00Speaker 4: going on.
- 22:01Speaker 1: The Last thing I want to ask because it's so
- 22:04Speaker 1: and I'll tell you, I don't ask stupid questions.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Like this, stupid yes, like this.
- 22:09Speaker 1: No. Uh, one of the most recent things you've gotten
- 22:12Speaker 1: attention for is shaving your facial hair. Now, let me
- 22:15Speaker 1: tell you, as a guy who's like I just want
- 22:18Speaker 1: to make music, you probably.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Like, what the hell?
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah, but that means you're a big deal dude if
- 22:22Speaker 1: they're talking about your shaved your mustache.
- 22:24Speaker 2: So people are upset about it.
- 22:26Speaker 4: So I knew that I had a mustache, you know,
- 22:29Speaker 4: I've seen it, and I knew, and I knew that
- 22:31Speaker 4: people had like done some videos like their husbands are
- 22:35Speaker 4: shaving mustaches. You know, I thought I saw that. I
- 22:38Speaker 4: didn't know that I had to have a mustache. I
- 22:40Speaker 4: know that I was a mustache guy.
- 22:41Speaker 2: That's your streaming numbers tank.
- 22:43Speaker 3: The next day, people were trying to get rid of
- 22:44Speaker 3: their tickets.
- 22:46Speaker 2: Dude.
- 22:46Speaker 3: The good newserser came back like four days later, so they.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Were getting rid of tickets at half the price. Raud them.
- 22:51Speaker 2: By the way, they were taking a lot.
- 22:52Speaker 3: So I won't make that mistake again, I guess.
- 22:54Speaker 2: But is that, like, how do you react?
- 22:56Speaker 3: Ridiculous is what it is?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Right?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 22:58Speaker 4: But I then again, a lot of the stuff I
- 23:00Speaker 4: read about myself is pretty ridiculous. Lightly so uh if
- 23:04Speaker 4: that's the worst headline this week.
- 23:07Speaker 1: There's a lot of people asking for any headline right now,
- 23:09Speaker 1: so the fact that they're just happening.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Man, I get online every day and figure out who
- 23:13Speaker 4: I'm dating. You know, the internet will tell me.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Listen. I won't tell you today, but congrats on Land
- 23:19Speaker 2: and Dolly. Nice Riley.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I know you're a busy guy, so carving out time
- 23:25Speaker 1: was not easy. Thanks for coming to hand, man, I
- 23:27Speaker 1: appreciate y'all.
